Should the sale and use of marijuana be legalized?

Bluegrass!
Like numerous others, I had my share back in my younger days. I went to the University of Miss. and it had one of the only legalized marijuana fields in the U.S. I'm talking over 10 foot plants! During peak season, they looked like rows and rows of tobacco. You should have heard some of the ideas that were thought up on how to score some dope. One friend of mine seriously thought about buying a remote controlled airplane and installing some form of a hook and swooping down and taking a few buds. I wish I could remember 'em all...

We live in a hypocritical society. Just last night, I read where drunk drivers cause a fatality every 32 minutes in the United States, but yet they continue to let companies do as they please. Anyone think the gov't would recall some medication that killed someone every 32 minutes? You bet their ass they would.

Big Daddy, LMFAO, best belly laugh I've had in a while.

Gateway drug? - I see no evidence of this in my fifty years of life. NICOTINE is the biggest gateway drug if you adhere to that philosophy.

I have a more radical view of the whole drug scenario. I think ALL drugs should be legalized - includes heroin, cocaine, weed, LSD, whatever. I don't need Big Brother to tell me what is good for me or bad for me.

Then take the money we spend on intervention, law enforcement, judicial, and incarceration, and spend it on treatment. The folks who have a daily regimen of drugs (this includes alcohol by the way) are not happy people and I really believe that MOST of them want to change their lives. For the ones that don't want to change - please die as quickly as possible.

In no way do I encourage drug use. In no way is drug use and the operation of any type of transportation a lawful activity. In no way is the prosecution, and incarceration, of millions of lost souls engaged in drug use, a benefit to our society.

IMHO

A couple of thoughts.I like to drink once a week on average, more in the nice weather or on holiday.I am 48 and smoked Rarely in the 60's and 70's and REALLY did not care for it ,I would 'throw-up' 1 out of 3 "chuffs" and paranoid the odd time..I did'nt start drinking till I was 22,the same time I tried tobacco.I quit tobacco 1 year 5 months 5 days ago (for the sharpies, right after the Super bowl-thanks again Denver).I have Never Never been through such HELL!!!!!!I watch 'The Insider' AGAIN last week,If you like yor smokes ,please watch this movie.Hey, I love to get 'blotto' on my Bud Lite the odd time ,so if you guys want to roll up a big fat juicy "splee" why the heck not?? If you get too F'd up DO not drive, order in a few extra cheese pies and party away.My God ,life is bloddy hard, let's unwind and have fun when we can.Alittle moderation is always cool, but forget this violence, get rid of the cornerstreet dealer and get rid of the guns.Hey if you want a little hemp, why not, it's been around for a long time and it sure as heck is'nt goin'away. As always, Good luck, good smokin'(if you care to) but the smokes WILL kill you,Stick to the pot and everybody have fun...Spanky..

Sure the stuff should be legal.
Im sure a lot of people dont realize that the year marijuana became illegal, (remember hemp is made from the plant and the navy and army used plenty of rope) within a year DUPONT was granted a patent on NYLON and sold plenty of nylon rope to the govt.himmmmmm. In the U.S.A. we can brew 100 gallons of beer or wine per adult in the house-hold. And the govnt makes plenty off taxing booze cause people are lazy to make there own and find we can purchase it easly. So do the same with marijuana and in the begining people will grow it for fun and will become lazy and purchase it from the store. Still I wonder what influance nylon has on the legalization of the five leafed plant.

I'm in the definite minority here! I still say it is a gateway drug as I know folks that have started this way. Studies can be made to say about anything. What percent of hard core drug addicts would say they smoked pot FIRST? Probably most.

Just to clarify a little, I saw the argument in the thread that alcohol was much more dangerous than dope and caused many more problems. I agree, and I personally would have no problem with getting rid of the alcohol as well. But can u imagine prohibition laws if they existed in this time??

So, if u want pot to be legal, here are some questions... Who will be allowed to grow it (Can just anybody stake out a plot in their backyard, or will it be like alcohol, stills are illegal), who will be allowed to sell it (will it be on the shelf pre-rolled just like tobacco cigarettes?), will there be premium and crap brands (IE Marlboro and Basic/Budweiser and Milwaukee's Best?), what will a "pack" of bud cost, can u smoke it at 18, or do u have to wait until u are 21, will the police have mobile breathalizer type units that will be able to test for THC in the system of an impaired driver and will that test unit be able to differentiate pot smoked in the last hour from pot smoked last month, and what will the drug level in the system be before u are impaired?

If u want pot legalized, then tell me how it's going to get done. It's easy to say, "Pot should be legal to smoke, and it doesn't hurt anybody," but tell me how it's going to get done. Answer the few questions posed in the previous paragraph. Defend your stance.

Six Five, Alcohol was against the law, the people protested and laws were changed. We have guidelines on alcohol that answer ALL your question regarding the processes. Why could laws not be made that would cover each issue.Lord knows, there are enough levels of elected gov't to be able to do this.Don't you think they would just love ANOTHER source of taxation.I have stated I don't do the stuff, but many ,many million do.I think you have seen "Reefer Madness" a few too many times...Believe it or not, sometimes change is good...Spanky...

, I cannot participate anymore even though I would love to have a big fat daddy. However just because I cannot handle it does not mean other should not be allowed the pleasure of a really great drug. It never induced the violence in me that booze did and I never had a black-out unless I had a quart of JW red along with it.

As far as the taxation; why does every thing have to be taxed. Hell i grow tomatoes and they are not taxed. The only reason not to legalize weed is the Ignorant and Uninformed coupled with the PAC $$ from the churches and the booze companies. (great bedfellows, huh)

Spanky, never saw or even heard of Reefer Madness. My views are my own. My point is that u just can't say, "Pot should be legalized," and wiggle your nose. Has to be much more of a thought process there.

It should definitely be decriminalized. All the people rotting in jail because of some weed is ridiculous. Talk about a waste of taxpayer's money.

I'm 40 and have smoked almost daily since first sampling the sweet, sweet herb at age 16 or so. I do about 2/3 bongs a day (in the evening) of the finest chit available and enjoy it as if it were 25 years ago. I'm a health nut into good nutrition and exercise too, go figure...

My only worry is that if it IS ever legalized the prices would skyrocket and at $100 a 1/4 ounce for the good stuff, that would be, in a word... devistating!

Here's a mouthwatering mugshot!

As far as marijuana being a gateway drug, that is a rediculous argument. Alcohol is the biggest gateway drug in the world by far. Legal or not, alcohol is the start of substance abuse for most people who end up using harder drugs.

As far as why it is legal, I want to throw this out there. I think the main reason is simply that Europeans colonized America and the recreational drug of choice for the vast majority of Europeans is alcohol. Had an African country where marijuana is the recreational drug of choice been the first to colonize America, I believe the laws on both substances would be vastly different.

As far as MJ's fears that growing a marijuana plant in your backyard can lead to the confiscation of your house or cars, that is highly overdramatic. The fact is that in the *vast* majority of cases, the authorities only go after high volume dealers as long as you live in the suburbs. In urban areas, of course, the police have been known to be far more aggressive in their harassment of petty drug users and dealers, but I think that is another discussion entirely on a far different topic.
