Derek, everything you said above makes sense!
At 20/1 and 10/1 I had a great run for my money. I was absolutely gutted last night at picking up nothing, and this Six Nations has been poor from a betting perspective. I was looking to lay off throughout the tournament, but there was no opportunity to do so, without risking a large part of my potential profit.
The performance from England yesterday was as near perfect than I have ever seen from a rugby team. They made a very good Irish team look poor. Their defence was simply awesome, and handling skills, fitness levels, to a equally high standard. Nobody has been as big a critic of England than me. They have repeatedly blown it when it came down to the big occasion in the past, and I have always felt that they were overrated. True, as you already pointed out, very very few international countries will be able to compete with that standard shown yesterday. I have no arguments in losing to that yesterday. If you are going to lose I would rather lose like that, rather than missing kicks, and blowing a game that a team should have won.
Looking to the World Cup, I would still take New Zealand, and then France over the English. New Zealands strength in depth is frightning, and the French will beat anybody on their day. Take Johnny Wilkinson out of that team, and England do not have a fly half to come in, who can kick virtually anything, tackle like a back rower, and control a game so superbly. Take Richard Hill out of the team, and you do not have possibly the best back row man in world rugby, to cover every inch of grass, and do the dirty work, not often recognised by the media. Take Martin Johnson, and you lose the best leader in world rugby. His physical presence is immense, and he is vital to England.
If these players stay healthy up until the end of the year, then England have a great shout. We now know what level of performance they are able to produce, it is just a question how often they can repeat this.
With reference to Italy, they should be mighty proud of their efforts this year. They have a top man in John Kirwan, and their main task over the coming years, will be to keep this man as head coach of Italy. I doubt ,that should a better offer come his way, he will stay. As rugby develops in Italy, then they have the potential to be a top 6 rugby team, but they need more TV coverage, and lets not forget that their best player, one Diego Dominguez, will be retiring soon.
As for Wales, I am very sad at talk that soccer is quick becoming our national sport. As somebody who has grown up in the hot bed rugby areas of the South Wales valleys, I will never accept that this will ever happen. The push for provincial rugby is vital, and yet stubborn and selfish rugby administrators in Wales continue to stall on the idea, even after a wooden spoon. Wales can forget the World Cup, and concentrate only on developing a young team, to be ready for 2007, which could well be held in France.
From a capping perspective, I can only apologise for a poor Six Nations. It was tough going ever since the unexpected defeat of Wales by Italy, and the Ireland outright bets was the only thing going to bail us out. I can guarantee you this is a temporary hitch only. There is plenty ahead....the Heineken Cup ( a main source of my high profits this year) starts again early April, and there is more international rugby over the summer. Super 12 threads will start again on the weekend, and it just a matter of turning the corner, and getting another hatful of winners under the belt.
I will update my rugby record on the site, just as soon as I have time to go back through my plays, but I am confident we will still be well in the black, although the elusive $10,000 profit is further away that I would have liked at this point of the season.
Thanks all for contributing during this tournament......it has been a great thread!!
