Seriously though I am looking forward to your thoughts on the Super 12 this season. The pressure is on to see if you can match the near 70% record from 2001.

What you talking about, that would be High Quality, for Australasian sports journalism :)

Game One) Hurricanes v Blues, WestpacTrust Stadium
Hurricanes +6

After hours of agonising, I've decided not to look a gift horse in the mouth - or should that be a gift dog?

Quite simply, we won't get too many home dogs at this margin thru-out the 2002 season - and home sides ATS are certainly proven winners in the Super 12.

All week all I've heard prior to this game is how good the Blues looked in pre-season and what a force they will be this year. Personally, I couldn't give two hoots about pre-season results and frankly, there is no way the Blues could be any worse than last season's 4-7 SU, 3-8 AST rabble.

I think every man and his dog will be backing them tonite on the strength of 3 p/s wins over the Chiefs, Waratahs and Reds. Let's not forget all three of those games were in their own backyard - the Chiefs pushed them close after a tardy start, they thrashed a Waratahs side missing more than a dozen of tomorrow's starters and then thumped a Reds side that I don't think will be a contender this year.

In contrast, the 'canes have lost all 3 warm-up matches - v Highlanders, Chiefs and Brumbies - and have left superstar Jonah Lomu on the bench tonight - hence the underdog line.

Where Auckland are expected to get on top is in the front row; where the big pack of Meeuws, McFarland and Woodcock are up against the Taranaki trio of Slater, Hore and Penn. But if the 'canes threesome can get some parity then the home side should be right in this.

The absence thru injury of Maimuri will disrupt the Blues lineout a little as he works well in tandem with Northland team-mate Glenn Taylor. Dion Waller will play for the 'canes after being cleared of a hand injury and he and Paul Tito should contest possession well.

The battle for possession amongst the loosies and around the scrum should be even, while Carlos Spencer (Blues) and David Holwell ('canes) are similar goalkickers; both can run hot and cold.

A lot of talk for the Blues has centred on flying wingers Rupeni Caucaunibuka (pronounced Thow-thow-en-booker in case u were wondering!) and Doug Howlett; as if no-one will be able to live with the pair this season. But that's overlooking Caucau's defensive weaknesses, which Lome Fa'atau is capable of exploiting (and Lomu off the bench).

What worries me about Auckland's capabilities to exploit their wingers' offensive talents are the centre pairing of Rico Gear and Mark Mayerhofler. Here is where the hosts, with All Blacks Tana Umaga and Pita Alatini, have a distinct advantage. Don't forget the 'canes also have Christian Cullen at fullback too on a mission to get his ABs jersey back.

The Blues covered the spread just once on the road last year, winning SU just once too. The 'canes (5-6 SU, 4-7 ATS) were a disappointment last season too, just 3-2 SU at home but, notably, 1-0 ATS as the home dog (when they rolled the eventual title-winning Brumbies convincingly).

The 'canes have never beaten the Blues. That could be just the motivation they need to cause an upset in the first game of the new season tonight.

PLAY WELLINGTON HURRICANES +6

Note: Still thinking about the Sharks v Stormers game which kicks off 6am NZ time. Approx, that's 4 or 3am Aus time and midday US EST Fri. Have not got all the info I need yet to make a play but will make a decision prior to game time. Will add a few thoughts in approx five hours.

Preview - Stormers v Sharks
Vodacom Rugby Super 12 2002 kicks off with a bang on Friday night when the Stormers and Sharks renew their rivalry at the Absa Stadium in Durban.

Both sides are severely decimated by injuries to key players, with the Stormers hit the heaviest. That, however, shouldn?t detract from what promises to be another fierce battle between what is basically last year?s Currie Cup finalists.

The Sharks this week suffered a heavy blow when inside centre Trevor Halstead had to withdraw from the match due to a knee injury. According to coach Rudolf Straeuli, he could be out between two and four weeks. Deon Kayser will also miss the game due to a groin injury.

Also out are flankers Charl van Rensburg (AC Joint injury) and Nicky van der Walt (hamstring), and hooker John Smit (ankle). Hard-tackling flyhalf Butch James will miss the entire season following off-season surgery.

The Stormers, however, boast an even more impressive injury list, with Springboks Robbie Kempson (prop), Bob Skinstad (No 8), Toks van de Linde (prop), Neil de Kock (scrumhalf), Chris Rossouw (flyhalf), Robbie Fleck (centre) and Breyton Paulse (wing) out for various durations.

Kempson and Van der Linde are the most serious and are sidelined for the entire tournament.

The Sharks have impressed during the pre-season with wins against the Cats (39-25) and London club Harlequins (31-13). The Stormers were on fire against the Renegades, the ?fifth Super 12 side?, but sneaked a last-gasp victory against perennial strugglers the Bulls.

New Stormers coach Gert Smal sees this game as the start of a new era. ?It?s a new team with players coming in.

?There are six players with no Super 12 experience and about seven or eight with little experience, so it?s going to be a huge challenge for them as well as the coaching staff to get settled into a very competitive unit as quickly as possible. You won?t get a bigger game than what we?re getting on Friday.?

On Wednesday Smal was still undecided about his goalkicker. ?They had a session this morning and we will have another session on Friday or Thursday night before we play. We will assess them then and make a decision.?

The coach said Marius Goosen (pictured), Percy Montgomery and Werner Greeff are in line for the job. ?Braam van Straaten worked a lot with Werner last year and he can also kick. Then (reserve scrumhalf) Noel Oelshig is another option as he kicked for the SWD Eagles last year.?

Matches between the Sharks and the Stormers are always fought out in the trenches, and Smal expects nothing different this time around. ?They might come with one or two new things, but I think we know what to expect.

?It?s going to be a very physical game and we have to be at our very best, especially in the tight phases, to be able to do what we want to do and to stop their momentum, because they are in effect a momentum side. If they get momentum they are very dangerous.?

Straeuli said it is important for his team to forget about last year, when they - against all odds - reached the final of the Super 12.

?I am very excited, because it?s the start of a new competition with new challenges. We must forget about last year and focus on this year?s competition as it is important to pick up the points in your first game.

?We are well prepared and had three good warm-up games, but it?s what happens during the competition that counts. We are going overseas after this game, so we need to win it,? the man who is widely favoured to become the new Springbok coach said.

About the lack of needle in the buildup to this game, Straeuli commented that the new spirit of cooperation between the four Super 12 coaches has contributed to it. ?I don?t think it is a good thing to start with a local derby - we should have played the overseas teams first, but I don?t expect anything untoward to happen in the games.

?The regions are working well together and we played warm-up games against each other, so all the bad feeling of last year is gone. The games will obviously be fiercely contested as it is important for all of us to do well, but I expect it to be played in a good spirit.?

He doesn?t think Western Province?s Currie Cup victory of last year would give them the psychological edge. ?No, we are on the same footing, both are making a fresh start to a different competition. They?ve won the Currie Cup, but that doesn?t come into the equation on Friday night.?

The big question mark for the Sharks will be how Gaffie du Toit performs at flyhalf as the replacement for James. He had a poor season there in 2000, but showed he has plenty of class when he played at fullback in 2001.

The Sharks have four away games following this opening encounter against the Stormers and if they can come through the trip unscathed, they will be well placed to repeat last season?s effort of making the final.

The table is level at two-all between the Sharks and Stormers and like any South African derby is sure to be a rough and tumble affair. But it?s tough to see how the Stormers can hit the ground running with such top talent out injured at this early stage.

Teams for Absa Stadium:

Stormers: Marius Goosen, Percy Montgomery, Marius Joubert, De Wet Barry, Pieter Rossouw (v-capt), Werner Greeff, Johannes Conradie, Adri Badenhorst, Hendrik Gerber, Corn? Krige (capt), Hottie Louw, Quinton Davids, Cobus Visagie, Pieter Dixon, Daan Human. Substitutes: Tjoepie van den Heever, Faan Rautenbach, Thys Stoltz, Pietie Ferreira, No?l Oelshig, Wayne Julies, Jeffrey Stevens.

Hey This Is Fun!

Hey This Is Fun!

I followed your picks last year and had a blast. Two little set-backs do not in and of themselves result in a lack of faith in your ability.

I'm in it for the long haul.

I'll just double my bets until I break even!

I know I sound like a smart ass.

I AM! :D

Best of luck to you Anders.

Hang in there, Anders.

I followed several of your plays last year and made money. Just a quick suggestion and request -- if you don't mind.

When you post a pick, can you put in the subject line? I realize I have no right to ask you to talior your posts just for me, but its very difficult to know WHEN these games are played and starting times). If you have a play for FRI, then we know when and where to look. Many of us want your plays an advice I'm sure, and I for one wouldbvry thankul to be able to see that you have a play by the subject, soI can quickly hit mybook.

Thanks for considring my suggestion,

Nolan Dalla

Chiefs ML

Chiefs ML

Game Three) Chiefs v Waratahs, Rotorua Stadium
Chiefs ML $1.90 (-111)

Will back the local yokels here - about time a home team won one this season!
The Chiefs won all 3 matches they played at Rotorua last season while the Waratahs' road record is well documented _ they went 0-5 SU last season and have won 7 of 33 road matches in the competition's history.
Chiefs have much the same squad as last year. They are minus coach John Mitchell but Kevin Greene was Mitch's assistant last year and is a wily character.
The home team need to secure enough good ball at scrum and lineout time to put pressure on NSW. They will field an inexperienced locking pair at this level of Keith Robinson and Kristian Ormsby while their front row is unheralded but slightly under-rated.
I don't think the NSW front three will hold too many fears for them _ Dunning is yet unproven as a scrummager while Cannon is often shaky as a line-out thrower ...a loose Cannon so to speak
Mat Rogers debuts at fullback. I think he'll be a star quite quickly but still probably needs a bit of adjusting to the code - has played for Aus Schoolboys at union. Still, moving Matt Burke to centre is an unsettling shift for the Waratahs backline.
Their weakest link may be at No10. NSW have struggled in that position for years and now utility Duncan McRae comes into replace Manny Edmonds.

PLAY CHIEFS ML

Game Four) Crusaders v Highlanders, Jade Stadium
Crusaders -7.5

Crusaders should have too much firepower and depth here.
Based around the dominant NPC team last year _ and the basis of the current All Blacks side (only promising winger Joe Maddock in the Canterbury XV has not played for the ABs) the Crusaders will be out to make up for last season when they lost the title they had won three years running without fight.
Under Laurie Mains, the Highlanders will be dangerous foes but are another side who can't seem to win away from home. They have injury problems too, and will miss Taine Randell and Carl Hoeft. Thru Chris Jack, Norm Maxwell and Reuben Thorne, the hosts should dominate at lineout time and do enough to cover a reasonably generous spread for the chalk.
