Utep vs Tulsa (ESPN2) 08:05 pm Tulsa -14
The Golden Hurricane (6-1 SU and 5-1 ATS) have decided advantages on both sides of the football and have consistently played at a high level this season. They have revenge on their mind as last year they fell 41-38 at UTEP, which was their only SU loss in their last eight games in 2005. Tulsa is on spread runs of 15-3 overall, 9-2 as a chalk and 14-3 against teams with winning records. Going back to last season, the Golden Hurricane is on runs of 12-2 SU and 11-2 ATS overall and 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS at home. UTEP can't run the football, plays sub-par defense and rarely performs well on the road (lost by 17 at Houston last week, lost outright by 13 laying nine at New Mexico in its previous road game). The Miners are just 2-7 ATS in their last nine roadies and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 under the lights. Tulsa won and covered its previous weeknight national TV game this year over Southern Miss and the Golden Hurricane will score the home win and cover tonight.
Tulsa has played some talented offensive teams like BYU and is still allowing just 16 points and 259 yards per game. They allow 121 yards per contest through the air, and that's what they'll mostly have to defend tonight as UTEP (79.6 yards rushing per game) is not a balanced offensive team. QB Jodan Palmer has had some success, but he's also thrown 10 picks. And on a windy night in Tulsa, he'll toss at least two more this evening. In three home games, Tulsa has allowed just 16 total points (albeit against not-so-strong competition) after holding Southern Miss to six a few weeks back.
I won't go into great detail here, but Tulsa will be able to rack up a sizeable number of points this evening. After scoring 35 (Memphis) and 31 (ECU) the past two games on the road, this Golden Hurricane will rack up a big number at home against a UTEP stop unit that is yielding 29 points and 401 yards (270 pasisng) per game. Behind standout passer Paul Smith, the Golden Hurricane are averaging 29.6 points and 405 yards per game. They'll post a big score and Tulsa will win and cover for the sixth straight game.
