i love betfair :grins: :grins: only problem is when i have a winner like Edfors today, but i lay off half my winnings and then he wins so you are happy but still feel like you lost. I use it for probably 80% of my bets, that and Stan James in running espescially the first day they still go 1/4 top 5. If I like a player in the 100-1 range I usually wait and see how they start.

Interesting Whaler--I keep saying I'm going to look into Betfair but never do. I understand your thoughts on laying off but certainly the right move--used to think same things on place only that won but don't phase me anymore.

Pharlap you rascal I'm envious :) I've gone from hitting balls every day to being confined to nothing but chipping and pitching for last 3 weeks--a wierd back prob that no one can find reason. The most depressing thing I've been through.
On diiff tangent I got check returned from Sportingbet.au from closed account. No one signed it--been speaking with them about it but no one is really giving me any feedback. If I don't get it straighten out will send it to you and you can have proceeds if you can get them to honor it.

Will continue to be very hot with very little wind for the next few days and the ground is already very hard. Could be reminiscent of "Duel in the Sun" ;)

Outright plays (total stake per play: 1pt)

Vijay Singh to win 16/1 e.w. @ BetInternet, Paddy Power, BlueSq, BetFred and Boyle Sports [all 1/4 1-2-3-4-5-6]
In an interview after the Memorial Tournament, Vijay said that his game was "almost there" and that it had been getting better for some time. His highest finish in his last four events had been 36th, but he won the following week, finished 6th in the U.S. Open, which is his 2nd-best-ever finish in that event and then finished 4th in the Western Open when his previous best in that event had been 10th. That is quite a strong indication of form and having finished 2nd and 5th in two of the last three years in this event, he could be set for another personal best in this event as well.

Ernie Els to win 17/1 e.w. @ GolfingGods [1/4 1-2-3-4-5-6]
One common feature about these selections is that they hit the ball a long off the tee. It is not that length itself will be important this week as the course is playing very hard and fast and there will be very little wind, rather the bunkering is rather out of date for current technology. Luke Donald is one player who has already voiced his concerns about the number of fairway bunkers that are situated within his driving range. To carry them will give the bigger hitters an advantage of 100 yards or so and that cannot be ignored. And in terms of Els, there are few who hit the ball as well off the tee and particularly on link courses. It is very difficult to ignore someone who has four top-3 finishes in the last four years, including one win, provided they are fit and playing well. And on both counts Els passes the test. He is now finally showing no adverse effects from his knee injury and was quite vocal in his frustration at his putting last week. The rest of his game had been excellent and, in his owns words, he should have shot 62 on Saturday. He skipped the European Open two weeks ago to spend time at Hoylake and prepare properly and so long as his putter is not too cold, he really should be in the mix again this week. His public frustration last week is much preferable to his backers than the resignation that was so often evident in the previous six months.
(BetInternet, Paddy Power, BlueSq and Boyle Sports off 16/1 and 6 places]

Geoff Ogilvy to win 50/1 e.w. @ Paddy Power [1/4 1-2-3-4-5-6]
"It's my favourite tournament of the year, without a doubt ... We only play courses like that once a year. It's nice to see the ball rolling on the floor when it lands. You never really forget how to play like that." So when a player who is 2nd on the PGA Tour Money List says that and is 50/1, you should take notice. Ogilvy learned the game on hard, fast courses and this will be one of those. He has the shots to win on this course and this year, he has the belief as well, winning not only the World Matchplay Championship, but the U.S. Open. He returned to Australia after that victory to relax and prepare for this event. Again in his own words, "I won't expect to win, but I feel like I can win." That's good enough for me!

I live one hour from the course and would downplay the weather sites' forecast for rain on Thursday and some showers over the weekend. There is only a small chance that thunderstorms may occur on Thursday, but they are likely to be mainly in the South of England.

On Wednesday we're expecting temperatures to reach 37 degrees in the South and so become our highest-ever temperature in July; forecast is for 34 degrees in Liverpool and then the cooler 25-27 degrees from Thursday onwards.

Even if we do have thunderstorms, with the ground baked so hard as well, links courses are famous for losing the moisture in the ground extremely quickly.

A shame really, as Royal Liverpool is a great course and one where there is always some wind to make course management critical, but there is unlikely to be any of note this week. We'll see a lot of irons off the tee and experience of playing on links and hard, fast courses will be essential.

Thanks Cwood--just what I was looking for.
Do you plan on attending Stan?
Share your anger with Bryant last week--had him in place doubles with both Gulbis and Kim :(

Saw Faldo do oncourse walk and commentary and if wind does get up some, might be noteworthy "his view" was it would favor those that draw ball quite a bit if per general direction of wind.

Not much info on course except heard OB comes into play on several holes but would expect as usual in B.O. the cream will come to top.Probably will pass most pre touney outrights with exception of Bjorn as he has cashed 2 place tickets for me in last 6 years at decent odds. Can remember his bunker incident in 03 like it was yesterday--maybe he'll have his medication just right this week :)

Are there any nationalities that would be favoured by these conditions over others, in your view?

Australians and proven links players.

History also suggests the same: Peter Thomson, of course, won in 1956 and in 1967, the top-3 were De Vicenzo, Nicklaus and Player. Nicklaus & Player won 3 Open titles (Nicklaus was also 2nd seven times) and De Vicenzo finished outside the top-20 just once in 14 attempts.

This is an unusual links in that it is very flat ... quite different to Lytham and Birkdale. It is quite hard for an inexperienced links player to visualise the shot IMO and that will be especially so with the ground so hard.

Have family staying with us this week, so hoping to get over there on Saturday. But can't appear (or rather, won't be allowed) to be a bad host ... :(

The official history of the course is called "Mighty Winds ... Might Champions" ... an adaptation of a Bernard Darwin quote "Hoylake, blown upon by mighty winds, breeder of mightly champions". I've never played the course without a decent breeze, but it appears to be not the case this week.

Lots of out of bounds, which is bizarre, but they should really only affect the amateurs. But with the grounds so hard, who knows?

Dont be silly DTB. If I can help in any way possible to get your money I will. And then I will simply deposit it to your account. Just let me know if I can assist.

(A bit of extra time on the short game never hurt anyone......golf is all about the short game!!! Hope your back gets better soon as there is nothing worse than a bad back.)
