Since they are raising our cable rate again, I am going to switch to a satellite service. Can anyone please give me some feedback (good or bad) on either of these companies? Thanks for your help!!

I got DirecTv this fall in conjunction with a new widescreen tv. I like it. DirecTv has just purchased the Dish Network, so soon you wont have a choice anyway. I got a DirecTv/Tivo unit, which I LOVE. Once you use Tivo, you wont go back.

Also have/had MLB/NHL and NFL packages. Absolutely no idea why I didnt get a dish sooner.

Close, but not quite right, Phil. Dish Network is still trying to get the final approval to purchase Hughes sattelite(DirectTV).
If and when final aproval is OK'd, people who have the DISH network(like me) will have the same opportunity to get the NFL Sunday ticket.
I have several friends with DirectTV and their only compaint is that it doesn't take much weather to disrupt the system-- mine only goes out in very heavy rain or snow..
You want to see all NFL games-- get DirectTV. Otherwise, get the DISH.

Sorry, you're right of course. The merger is anything but complete and governement oversight pretty much dictates this is not going to be a swift process. DirecTv however did recently launch a new satellite called SpotBeam, and while I dont pretend to know the technology involved here, it will bring more local channels and better picture quality starting on 1/1/02.

For more really good information on this, surf on over the the avsforums.com. Look for the forum on DirecTv+Tivo. There were a lot of threads started about this.

i live in canada and i'm not sure if you guys know but we can't order direct tv here, so we buy the system in america and load the card with a loader that you can buy for 175$ canadian. This way you pay no fees and are essentailly only paying i believe $50 for the system. I bought the system in Boston for 50$ and bought the loader, and when Direct TV shoots the signal down you just reload it on your computer it takes about 1 minute. This is how canadians and bars in canada get direct tv. Anybody have any other questions, i could help.

Go to this website and there's a picture of the loader there WWW.DSS-CANADA.COM, there's plenty of places to buy them in Canada, and I 'm sure they can be mailed to you. I bought my system off a guy for 400$ with the smart card programmed. I overpaid, my friend in Boston bought the system for 50$, I programmed his card for free, and you get everything, NBA, NHL, Nfl, MLB. Before 3 weeks ago you had all the Porno and pay per views on all the time. NOw with the script tht decodes the channels, you receive 150$ of credits, and then you order any movies or porno for free. When your 150$ runs out, just reload the card. You guys in the states are lucky because you can buy the system in stores with the CARD. BUY IT SOON BECAUSE DIRECT TV WILL START MAILING THE CARD SOON!! ANy questions drop me an email at jasonbasi01@yahoo.ca

Yes we now pay a monthly fee of about 39.99 a month for the basic services, they have been trying to really make a run at the cable business. This is exactually what i pay for digitial cable right now.

So basically this is what is going on now, u get the dish, and pay a monthly service,(not sure if it is a card or not) then u pay extra for pay-per-veiw and all the NBA and NFL stuff.

But if i understand u correctly , u get the system and then put a card into it which is a pre-paid card then use up the balance and (Supposedly) purchase anew card to continue veiwing. But u guys in canada simply just reprogram the card with a new balance then continue to watch right.

Gentlemen:

What the Canadians are doing with DTV systems is a felony in the United States, punishable by up to a $10,000 fine and 5 years in prison. Perhaps you should move the conversation elsewhere.

Best Wishes

The way we do it is as follows.

#1) We have to buy a system somewhere in America for around 50-75$ american. It includes the dish, receiver, and a smart card.

#2) People in the States are supposed to call Direct tv and subscribe as you do and order the packages they want. They will automatically send a signal to your smart card.

#3) The difference is that we don't call direct tv, we can load a program onto our smart card which is included in the package. This unlocks all channels except for 594, 596, 597, and 598, and the 100's payper views. All NFL, NBA, Mlb, everything is always on just like cable tv.
#4) You receive 150$ of credits to order your pay per view or PORNOS. You aren't paying for this don't worry. I order them all the time .
#5) When your credits are 0$ you can reload your card which takes 30 seconds, the loader looks like a small Zip drive.

These cards are being sold in Canada for 400 to 500$ a piece, and you guys can buy the whole system with a card for 50$.
So basically i pay nothing, no monthly, just the cost of the system and the loader!

BAINS,
Do they make these cards for the Dish Network too? Also, how can I find out where to get the system you're talking about in America for around $50-$75. Thanks for this info!!!

Goo call on SKINAR clubfoot. I can tell you the USA has more important issues than who's not paying for their direct tv. IF Direct Tv ever went after anyone it would be the sellers, not the end users. There are tens of thousands of people with the smart cards that I am talking about.

Firstly the Dish Network does have the smart card that unlocks all channels as well. I know because my friend just bought the system 3 weeks ago. With this Dish Newtwork they shoot the signal down every day. My friend bought a loader that you hook up to your computer, and he reloads the card every day. It takes seconds i believe. The dish network is good but it doesen't have the sports packages, like NFL ticket, nba league pass. I don't know about the future of this system.

Since you live in Atlanta, you can buy a direct tv system from BEST BUY, Circuit City, and Radio Shack. They cost around $50-75 american, you can also buy a dual receiver system which means 1 satelite dish, 2 receivers, and 2 smart cards, you can watch on 2 different tv's.*********( Open the box up and check in the receiver if a small blue card with a picture of a football player with# 84 on the jersey*****) If you buy it soon the card should come in the box, because Direct Tv is planning to sell the systems without the cards. Check if it's not in the receiver don't buy it. Direct TV is palnning to mail the cards to your home.

When you buy the system Direct TV wants you to order programming, so when you go to Best buy, circuit, or radio, they make you fill out a form with your address, and name, and credit card number. You have to put an address on the form so Direct Tv has an expected address to send the programming to. Direct Tv says you have to order programming within 3 months of purchasing the system or they will charge your credit card. This is not the case, as my friend bought the sysyem from Boston, and called DTv, and told them his landlord won't let him put the dish on the roof, and DTV said ok we won't charge you, but radio shack might. He called Radio shack, and they told him Radio shack won't charge him, but DTV might. They threaten to charge people to stop people from doing exactly what I did with my system. There is always a way around this threat by DTV.

In my case I went to Boston and gave my canadian address to some kids working there. It made absolutely no sense, and the kids working for minimum wage don't really care. They are happy to make a sale! I did give my credit card#,but cancelled it since, just to be safe. Check out those stores if you can buy it with cash then you have it made. But I believe most stores require a credit card. Either way all you really need is the DTV smart card, because it can be programmed with a loader. I bought 2 systems for 49$ each at circuit city, and a dual system at best buy for 149$, I have 4 cards in case something ever happens to them. I am watching Tv for free now, hooked up my parents with a system, ( my dad is happy) I hope this makes it clear, any questions?
