largest bet I have ever made in sports is $1K... that is a mere unit to alot of people, but I cannot phathom the anxiety that comes with anything bigger than that, especially in sports...I can understand betting bigger in poker, where you are in FULL control of your own destiny, but in sports, your riding on how a bunch of guys you have never met, and probably never will meet, are playing

This is a great point. I lost $1,200 a few months ago. Since then my bets have been smaller, and i must say my stress levels are way down. :mj14:

i lost on a bet somewhere over 1200, but i felt so much anxiety on a ucla hoops game i bet on 2 years ago. i actually won it, it came down to the last few seconds, but the stress was so much i thought iw as going to have a seizure. i've never bet even close to that amount since then. i dont want to die stressing over a bet.

With exception of scalps-- largest wager won or lost in last 5 years would probaly be $100. Normal wager is $50 which i rarily deviate from but do double up on occasion.

Kind of ironic in younger days when could not really afford it, was not unusual to bet more. I believe if memory serves me correct the largest loss back then was $500 on Hearns/Leonard fight. That was lot of money back then--especially to me.

Have said this before--I believe emotion plays big part in bottom line. For me $50 takes most emotion and aniexety out of it.
It is amount that at end of year will be significant enough for small reward for something you enjoy doing but not large enough to warrent getting up in middle of night to check scores or listen to scorephones.IMHO if you do one of the latter your betting is exceeding your comfort zone.

But also lost 2K on a bet before.

Nowadays i keep the bets to 200 but if im up i will press to 500 and maybe 1K depending on how i feel.

dtb,

it'd funny.....when i couldn't afford it, i too bet way over my head (kept hfc & beneficial finance in business...lol).....now that i can afford it, my bets are alot smaller, on the average...

i guess with age, comes wisdom...(lol).

Bet and won $1000 on a golf match with a fellow club member. Had to give him 2 a side, and he was wealthy. He probably thought the dollar amount would make me nervous...... :)

DTB and AR182,

I'm right there with you guys....Many $1000 MNF specials in 70s and 80s...But...only if I was up that much...My local..a good bud, and I would settle up at 2K....and he'd keep a running total..If I surpassed the 1K mark I'd wait for a spot to try to collect (usually an MNF game) Never really took big (to me) chances like that with my HARD EARNED dinero......Now, kids raised, colleges paid etc. I'm more conservative than ever...AND...I don't like keeping large sums in sportsbook accounts......Difference is that with my local I could bet 20 games (hypothetical) if I wanted and did not have to tie up a large sum to do it...Of course, if I lost all I'd have to pay but most of the action + or - was on Paper....I did not have to have 5000 in an account to bet a sum that was = to that cumulatively... Having to cover all bets in advance when the liklihood is that I'd W or L < a few hundred dollars...keeps my wagers lower as well....It's not so much about the $ now ....Like DTB says...I'd like to be up enough at the end of my season to take a trip...Take everyone out to dinner .....or something like that.. to me its a hobby...a challenging pastime...

Ok I have a few minutes so I will tell this story.....I will in pilot training in California in 1990 when I was in the service-there was a bar near the base that had wicked poker games going on in a side-room-a lot of it was service guys blowing there pay but some games were locals with tons of cash from the nearby seaside community--well the guy that owned the place was always in the big games-the gameshe had were $2500 buy- ins-reload anytime anytime---well I was about to be sent to the middle east so i wanted to play with the big boys once before I left....well long story short-I won a couple of nice pots and was up big $$ after about 4 hours...I should have left but I stayed..........it came down to a hand where I was holding 3 kings and lost to a guy with 4 jacks...the betting got so crazy in that hand the guy said " I know what you drive get the pink slip and I will give you $12000 credit well-I lost....need I say more.... I always say live and learn but at 23 years old that hurt......dealt 3 kings and got shit after--boy oh boy remember like it was yesterday....nothing since has even come close---I have gone on bad streaks and get down big money now and then but nothing really compares to handing over the keys.....

winner -playing poker. omaha 8/better 80/160 at bellagio 6 years ago. playing so far over my head at the time. got hit with the deck and won over 11,000. biggest poker win. sklansky was in the game at the time and all he was interested in was running to the sportsbook to bet on horses inbetween hands. the guy has or at least had a real problem with the ponies.

loser -playing poker. two nights later, thought i was a hotshot and couldn't lose, lost 9k in 80/160 stud at bellagio.

won 4800 two weeks ago playing the will there be a safety in the n.o monday night game for 300 at +1600. never made a straight wager larger than 2k. lost some of those too, so my biggest loser would have to be 2200 in one bet at sports.

One year Wild Card weekend hit at the end of the Bowl season.I worked for a week on a six team parlay that I felt very good about each wheel of,enough to play for a five figure payoff.I lost on an intentional safety by Holmgren at Gbay vs Detr laying 4- up 6 with 19 seconds to go.There can't be a worse way to go.
