First off DO NOT try and judge when you don't know me. To be honest where I am there isn't many homeless. But I DO Help the Local
Hospital, School, Police Dept., Fire Dept. I Own two Pizzerias and make a comfortable living and a believe in helping the less fortunate by Donating Food to all Local Charity events. There has been times where in New York City I would see homeless and I would not give them money because many are drug addicts but I did buy them Food.

And as far as Barry Bonds is concerned it more than just signing an autograph.
There is nothing you can say to make me even consider liking this guy.

34399, we definitely see your intelligence rise to the occasion. It's not about liking or disliking Bonds, it's about opinions about him breaking the record. He isn't a fan favorite like McGwire, and fans pay baseball players salaries. Take a look at his past seasons, and tell me if he's even come CLOSE to his game this year--and by now each season, he's been on the DL at least ONCE, so save your sarcasm--this forum is about expressing your opinion about a subject, not bashing those that post. You don't know me or anyone else you're criticizing, so stick to the subject at hand, and don't worry about what others say, just worry about your own posts. You don't have to like my opinion or anyone else's but we are certainly entitled to it without attacks from you.

And with you being the one who started this thread ASKING THE QUESTION IN THE FIRST PLACE if Bonds was deserving,---no one is arguing his talent, it's how he conducts himself as a man and player that also comes into play, he wouldn't be anything in the game if it weren't for the fans, because there wouldn't BE a game without them.

Any man making the $$$ he does, a year, and who upon the strike year tries to claim hardship so as not to pay his full child support, says it all about who and what he is. FOR HIMSELF. Please spare me. Leave the forum about everyone expressing their opinion on the subject, and not each other, otherwise it loses it's purpose.

"...Quo fas et gloria ducunt..."
here's a question...

we all sit here, not knowing the color of each other's skin in cyberspace...,
but look around on chatlines, and the first thing i've been asked is, "are you black?".

I say "no, i'm brown" and then...silence.

what does that say about igorance...or racism?
Yes, it's all nice to say it's 2001, get over it, but the fact of the matter is, there is still racism out there and it's NOT going to go away anytime soon.

I've run into racism and ignorance all my life, and i've learned to just ignore it..

What a great discussion we are having here.
There are a couple of things that came to my mind as I am reading the responses to the initial statement made by 39344.

The society we live in today seems democratic, but rather it is a monopolistic society. There are many different people, and thus, many different views and opinions.

In conclusuion, no one will ever be happy with what they have.

Jusy my 2 cents

If you really want something in your life, whteher you're white, black, yellow, brown, skinny, fat, small, tall, blond haired, brown haired, brown eyed, blue eyed, a girl, a guy, a gay, a blue jay, and all the rest, there's always a way to get it, however there'll always be "reasons" to say you "can't" get it too, but most of the time it's just between your ears. Note that I didn't say "always", but "most of the time".

It's obvious that if you're 6'3, 250 lbs and have a big frame, you won't be a good jockey no matter how hard you try, and it's obvious that if you're white, small and skinny you won't ever run the 100m in less than 10 seconds, no matter what kind of power-mix you drink at the morning and how good are your intentions.

In the same length of ideas, it's also obvious that if you're a black living in a country mainly occupied by white people, the odds are *a bit* against you and there'll always be more people to put a smoke in your wheel. I have never ever said that the phenomenon of racism was no longer existent, but it is now undeniably a LOT less of a problem than in the 60s, for instance. I don't see anything really serious that can stop someone achieving his goals today, no matter the color of his/her skin. You just have to know your limits, work hard to change the things you don't like, be conscious of the things you can't change, and most importantly, accept them.

Then, if you have the will to succeed, no matter if it's professionally, emotionally, morally or spiritually, nobody should be able to stop you. Nobody.

On a side note, when I see a black person who has achieved great things, I have even more respect for him/her because I know that he/she probably had to work twice as hard as a white man to become the one he/she is.

That being said, I hope from the bottom of me heart that Barry Bonds will beat the HR record, and I'll be the first one to raise my hat if ever he does so. However I don't think he'll do it. He himself said that it is not even one of his goals, saying that he has "higher objectives". I think what Bonds really want is to be recognized as one of the - if not THE - greatest "overall" baseball player of all time to date; and I might be not the greatest baseball "expert" in here, but in my mind that's what he is.

Hats off to Barry Bonds, no matter if he does it or not.

I hope Barry does break the record. one note is that while listening to the radio I heard of an experiment a scientist did on the different baseballs.

one was taken from the 60s,70s,80,and 90s, forgot the year specifically and some it can not be deemed scientific as there were only a few baseballs for the overall experiment. anyways the ball from the 90s on average would go about 10 yards further than the ball from the 60s.

maybe along with expanision (bad pitching) that these records may be broken on a more regular basis.

thanks

Selkirk,.........interesting
If thats true and these balls are travelling 30 ft farther than 1960 ......Imagine what the Bambino would be doing today cause the 1960 ball was a lot livlier than the 1927 ball (it is said)....B.Bonds....NOT even close to best ever. Cant compare to Dimagio,T.Williams,Willie Mays...and many others.IMHO.........or the Babe!

bear - I'm wondering how many stolen bases "the Babe" has
rolleyes.gif

Note that I mention the best "overall" player of all time. Bring me the facts, and I'm all ears. If you're just going to blindfully throw big names away, then I can't take your post seriously.

True, Babe didn't steal bases but you
forget that Babe had HOF ability as a
PITCHER. Haven't seen Barry throwing
many stellar quality starts. Still, he
is a great player and I am not rooting
against him.

One thing the Babe had was a soft spot in his heart for kids. When you see old news real of him most times there will be kids there with him. And yes the Babe was a excellent pitcure. He was good for baseball.
Bonds has his chance now to show some love for the game. Act a little like a kid relax and hit as many as he can. I know he is first to 50 ever. But that 70 will be tough. Records are there so someone can break them.

Katts,
B Bonds is a good ballplayer.....BUT no "Babe" or the aforementioned greats and there are more that are his equal or better.IMO
But ...lets talk about the "Babe" in terms of batting, and being an all-around versatile, great ballplayer.
1914-1919---The Babe was a dominant Pitcher with a total of about 600 ab and 50 hr for those 6 years...Versatile...hows this...94 Ws 40 something Ls with a lifetime era of 2.28 and whip of 1.15 averaging 3 walks per game. Give that man 2500 more at bats in his prime and he might have hit 850 career dingers............lifetime batting avg. "BABE".. .342 to BONDS.. .289
Dont forget that the "Babe" only played a 152 game schedule and oftentimes had 500 or fewer at bats... Bonds, is only about 600 career at bats behind Ruth right now. Power totals dont compare.. We havent even talked about the juiced ball effect. Dominant player of that era....BABE
this era ?????

I would like to see Bonds break the record. I respect him as a great player, but I agree with others in the beginning of this thread . . . he is an arrogant asshole. He needs to remember it is fan money that pays his BIG check.

Bear you are so right about Babes records. I was at the hall of fame two summers ago. I went and got my records outs and your dead on. Babe is the only player at the hall that has a room just about all to himself. Be it a small room. Size of small bedroom. Don't matter he's the only one. And yes many say if he had not pitched. Over 750 homers was forsure. Baseball loved him. Baseball needed him.

Yes, The babe's offensive output was amazing, better than bonds, but just wondering.......

Who can run down fly balls better, who can cut off balls in the outfield with more accuracy?? How many gold gloves did babe win?? Also, who has more stolen bases??? Who has more MVP's?? After this season, I see Barry Bonds taking home the MVP, which will make him achieve more MVP awards than any other player in the history of the game, that is truly amazing.

Okay okay, Babe Ruth arguably is the best baseball player ever, but for the best "All Around, total package" baseball player ever, Barry is one of the best if not the best.
