I think mud balls will be a huge problem.

Cie, maybe its a square play but it seems doable...

I haven't done so well in golf since the first segment so that's why I'm throwing (quite a few) questions at this knowledgeable group, but to think -3 or lower will not be the finishing score on greens that play pretty flat (but certainly fast and due to weather, they will probably hold) is questionable.

Of course, that's why we put our money on it...

360/300 Under 277.5

Bet placed. Guess we'll have to wait till Sunday to see. :mj07:

Soren Kjeldsen withdrew from the U.S. Open today, citing an ear infection.
Based on information we relayed last night, this is not surprising. On his web site, Kjeldsen wrote, "At the moment I am devastated to withdraw but the way I feel right now there is no way I could complete a round of golf. I am really looking forward to get this fixed and return to playing golf." Steve Conway or Murrieta, California will replace the Dane and play alongside Soren Hansen and Peter Hanson in the late-early draw.

Some cat on the radio said there will be no lift, clean, and place at the US Open. I think he was the head Kahuna guy from the USGA.

Was I the last guy to find out that Garcia broke up with his g/f? Greg Norman's daughter.

Do you think this makes it a Longshot tournament? I'm hearing very wet course. Rain 27 of L36 days in New York.

Sort of like the Romero +200 someone posted.

Very wet course plays into the hands of Tiger, and the high trajectory bombers. Shorter hitters usually rely on there tee shots to roll out a little, wet conditions squashes that. I'd say no on the longshots........

"We will stay here until we get a champion," said Jim Hyler, US Golf Association (USGA) vice president and chairman of the championship committee.

With balls splotching in the soft conditions, the course will play to its full 7,426 yards, the second-longest layout in US Open history.

Having players clean and replace balls will not be allowed, Hyler said.

"We're not going to play lift, clean and place. We will suspend play," he said.

"Tiger Woods began his final practice round of the U.S. Open by hitting a 5-wood for his second shot on a par 4, which is rare for someone with his power. Stranger still was that it wasn't enough club to reach the 10th green.
The stubborn side of the defending champion showed up on the 15th fairway at Bethpage Black. Staring toward the elevated green, he backed off his shot and turned to his caddie as if to change clubs, then decided to stick with the 4-iron already in his hands. Woods hit it pure, and when the ball barely reached the green, he laughed. I've already hit too many 3-irons on par 4s today, he said."

A large majority of these guys will be hitting metal into these greens. Usually makes for a long, stressful day of up and downs. On the bright side...the greens are slow.

Round 1 plays (1pt):

Ernie Els to beat Rory McIlroy -111 @ Bet365 [also available @ FiveDimes]
Opposing McIlroy on his event debut. I can't see him playing well on a U.S. Open course (despite the wet weather) until he has had more experience of this. He missed his last cut in the U.S. (the Players Championship) by seven shots, so he really shouldn't beat a former champion whose form has been noticeably improved of late.

David Toms to beat Rory McIlroy +110 @ Paddy Power [available generally]
Toms may not be a former U.S. Open champion, but he has finished in the top-5 twice in the last six years and only missed one cut this decade. Like Els, he has shown good form of late and shouldn't be too far from the leaderboard despite the wet conditions.

Thomas Levet to beat Raphael Jacquelin -130 @ Unibet
This will be Levet's fifth appearance in the U.S. Open and that includes a top-20 finish when this course was last used in 2002. With form figures that read 1st, mc, 8th and 9th in his last four starts, there appears to be a decent chance that he will repeat his 2002 finish this year, particularly as he is a notably good wet weather player. Jacquelin is making his debut in the U.S. Open and his last four starts have yielded finishes of 41st, 71st, mc and mc ... he shouldn't win this French matchup.

Thomas Levet to beat Jean-Francois Lucquin -175 @ Unibet
Another French matchup from Unibet featuring Levet against another player making his U.S. Open debut. Lucquin simply isn't in the same class as Levet who has finished ahead of him in nine of their last eleven common events and so these odds are certainly deserved.

Kenny Perry to beat Rory McIlroy -103 @ Expekt
Adding a third player to beat McIlroy who has never finished behind McIlroy in a strokeplay event. I can't see McIlroy reversing that stat on his debut in the U.S. Open.

Hey Chip

Nearly everything I play is at CaribSports and all my prop bets were played there. They only offer props on the four majors though. The only other book I use is ThePig and they only offer whole tournament matchups for golf.

I never had a problem with Carib and I've used it for a while. The one negative with both of the books is that they use a 30 cent line rather than the 20 cent line many others use. I tried another book or two that had 20 cent lines but never had the extra $ to refund the account when I lost it.

So what props were you looking at? Respect your opinion, so curious if you have any comments on any of mine above, both positive AND negative is appreciated. Actually off to a weak start as opposed to last week so need to turn the tide. Good luck to you.

I didn't say it well, but inclement weather (in most sports) can be an equalizer b/c it increases the unpredictability. Was sort of random this year, but if weather knocks Tiger out, that opens up the card. Hope somebody cashes a huge longshot.

Thanks Chip
Have never looked at Carib--will have to give them a peak. I don't mind 30 cent lines on props. Most fun I ever had betting golf was couple years ago when 2 books had scoring props plus birdies-girs etc every even--didn't last but one year unfortunately.

On the rd scor props I generally look at course set up and weather--Then I will either bet all overs @ -125 or less or pass. My premise is lots of things have to go right to score well in major but not much to go wrong to go over total. Have found for me it is best not to pick an choose what I think are strongest leans but take all of them.
This tourney was tough as weather was big ?
Nothing messes up props more canceled rds.
Also was undecided on how much change to graduated rough would come into play and as well as soft greens. Found out :)
I had same scor props as you and split also.
Won both with morning tees (tiger-paddy) and lost both pm tees (garcia-Mcilroy)
Was certainly liking chances till rd was suspended and pm tees got MUCH better conditions and scores next day.

On the finishing positions--again rairily bet an under--usually over or pass. The finishing # will usually dictate pass or play. One # a book had on several players 17.5. Took the over on all players with that total. Again on premise a lot of things have to go well vs only a few bad.
This table shows finishing poitions in Opens and it tells the story--however do tweak the total # with last 4 events to get clearer form.
http://www.golfobserver.com/golfstats.php?c=357

Again for me--has always been best not to try to pick what I think are best plays but rather take all that fit criteria--and the more players you can get in equation--the better.

Just my 2 cents anyway :)
