Cheers from Hazeltine National
-While Goosen was starting his preshot routine from a just in the right rough to the water guarded 6th hole, the gust of the day that I felt in my face came up. It sent Funk scurrying back up the fairway after his cap, and Goosen back to his bag for a second time. A big bailout to the right disgusted Goosen and surprised no one. Beem was in the next group, and his perfect strike from out of the trees with ?41, 60 to the pin? (i.e., 141 and 160), from a clean lie (about 6 feet from my tennis shoes) was picture perfect, but there was no comparison to the challenge Goosen had just faced.
-The only place where we parked for 90 minutes (and were soon positioned on the front row at the ideal spot, except for standing on a sidehill) brought us a lovely little run of birdies at #15 (although the guys carrying my money, Norman and Lonard, both made bogies). Leonard stayed focused through the blast off of Tiger?s par down on #16 to convert his opportunity on #15, and he then went on to make his own noise on #16. Too bad it wasn?t Sunday.
-If the wind lays down completely, the course is now receptive enough for some low starts by the folks starting too far back. Putts can be holed on these true rolling and readable surfaces. Even the wet rough inside the ropes was well trampled today by the marshals and traveling entourages, so that the tough lies were being found just off the fairways and in some areas off the greens.
-The action was too fast and furious with threesomes off both #1 and #10. The Saturday finish to the 2nd round meant that pairing sheets were not being circulated until the leaders had less than 9 holes to play, and I doubt if 500 out of 40,000 people took the time to copy down the pairings posted in the clubhouse areas. Add in a fair amount of sidehill slop, strong winds and uncertainty over what clothes to wear, and it was a fairly difficult day for the spectators. I had a blast, but now a couple of more hours rest will be sweet.
Sunday Matchups at 5dimes for 1*:
Leonard(-115) over Goosen
Justin has earned my money.
Rose(-115) over Campbell
The putter still appears a little bulky, but Justin is playing well and still playing for a lot and thoroughly enjoying the moment.
It's the PGA Championship, and I'm here. I'll add those two to these three in a parlay for 0.5* to win 11.28*:
Riley(-113) over Mediate
Lowery(-105) over Allenby
Norman(-120) over Flesch
