What do you know??? A rich Texas funded this bullshit... stunner

Texan funds anti-Kerry vets
Houston Republican gave $100,000 to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth
The Dallas Morning News
AUSTIN ? Houston homebuilder Bob Perry, a major supporter of President Bush and the Republican Party, is the biggest financial backer of a veterans group seeking to discredit Democrat John Kerry's military service, according to federal records.

Mr. Perry gave $100,000 to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group that has been critical of Mr. Kerry's anti-war activities after he returned from Vietnam. That accounted for two-thirds of the organization's receipts to date.

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth also has hired a Dallas-area private investigator to gather information about Mr. Kerry's three Purple Hearts. Group members, including some who served with Mr. Kerry, argue he did not deserve the medals and is not fit to be president.

The Kerry campaign has accused Swift Boat Veterans of being a politically motivated group with ties to the Republican Party and the Bush administration. The Bush campaign says it is not associated with the group.

Bill Miller, a spokesman for Mr. Perry, said the Houston businessman is "a self-proclaimed Republican" who has supported many candidates and causes.

"He gives money where he believes it's needed and serves a good interest," Mr. Miller said.

Federal law restricts individual contributions to candidates, but independent groups such as Swift Boat Veterans can accept unrestricted donations. The groups are forbidden from coordinating their activities with candidates.

Mr. Perry is one of the most prolific contributors in Texas. He has donated more than $5 million to state candidates and causes since January 2000 and several hundred thousand dollars to national candidates and the GOP.

According to the organization's filing with the IRS, Swift Boat Veterans raised $158,750 from April through June 30. Other contributions included $25,000 each from Houston lawyer John O'Neill and Dallas developer Harlan Crow.

The report also shows that the group paid $3,179 to Rockwall private investigator Tom Rupprath. Veterans contacted by Mr. Rupprath, who has declined to comment, say he has sought to misrepresent them to damage Mr. Kerry.

Stevie As far as murdoch and fox leading charge----you obviously did notsee O'reilly on issue last night. He did a scathing report against the ad.

My view is if he ran his campaign since the start on this issue so he has opened it to scrutiny.

If he can prove any allegations completely false I suppose the is the libel and slander avenue.

I have my own assumptions but was not there---
However discounting all allegations by both sides one must consider the obvious.
Which event would reflect a persons true courage.
Volunteering as a Naval officer for Viet Nam against a country that has no airforce or navy or demanding to get out of dodge after 4 months via 3 scratches that he himself even referred to as "walking wounded"??

and while I am sure there is a little spin to allegations it's no worse than Edwards Spin at convention when he said Kerry volunteered for Swift boat duty--the most hazardous in the navy.

What he failed to mention by Kerrys own admission years ago-----

"I didn't really want to get involved in the war," Kerry said in a little-noticed contribution to a book of Vietnam reminiscences published in 1986. "When I signed up for the swift boats, they had very little to do with the war. They were engaged in coastal patrolling and that's what I thought I was going to be doing."

Where this hurts more then helps the republicans is these guys say there republicans. But where it really could hurt is when soemone like John Mc Cain who already has had this chit done to him by the Bush guys. When he Comes out and says drop that add it's BS. Bush can lose Mc Cain's backing he may lose the WH. Bush poll numbers wen up two points the week Mc Cain went on road with him. So Mc Cain does make a differance.
Everyone see the good job report again today were stil going in the chitter.

moveon.com puts out MILLIONS of money to call Bush things like a "Nazi" and all kinds of other insinuations.....

funded by money from guys like Soros and virtually anyone in this WORLD

but now an American who made his $$ putting people in homes funds something...and the democrats are all up in arms?

AFTER this public spectacle put forth by Kerry showing absolutely NO respect to the battlefield...all for political gain....

some other distinguished veterans speak on how they saw the battlefield? and you question their timing? This guy IS running for President of the United States....and this guy IS making a mockery of the battlefield in Vietnam....

and all you can talk about is the timing and who funded it......

but Michael Moore can make an inflammatory movie and the liberals love it......

such hypocrisy...

All these people have the freedom to do what they want with their money....Moore, MoveOn.org, and the distinguished veterans who expose Kerry in a different light....a light a little more consistent with what we know about the man...and you liberals want it censored?

amazing

Not censored, just discredited. I, probably more than anyone else here in this forum, appreciate the value of the first amendment.

The Drudge Report now theres a accurate source of news information, how many times has that guy been sued and found guilty? I have no problem with these guys placing their ad against Kerry, hey it's America they have that right (until Bush destroys that constitutional right) but you also have to justify that at least Kerry served in a hostile environment where he put his life at risk. On the other hand when Bush and Cheney had their opportunities to serve as patriots in Vietnam they chose not to go!

I agree. I honestly don't think Bush had anything to do with it, either. It wouldn't be worth the risk.

Master Capper- You are dead-on about Drudge. I've said it in a previous post, and I'll repeat it now... Drudge has about as much journalistic credibility as The Onion.

no problem with Kerry serving nor any problem with what he did AS LONG AS HE LEAVES IT ON THE BATTLEFIELD

what he has done throughout the campaign is pat himself on the back way too often for any kind of respect and that display at the DMC was in very poor taste....made me think the whole spectacle was just so that they could put a lie out there to cast a shadow of doubt on the truth

he opened himself right up for this....and i believe all this is very warranted right now.....

"the bunker"
as i said,i agree that the stuff about kerry shooting a fleeing teen in the back is out and out slander....it makes me sick...

but,the kerry campaign has made his viet nam service the fulcrum of his campaign thus far....

did he expect to get a pass?...did he expect that everybody would lay down and die on the issue?....

i don`t think so....

also as was said before, the kerry campaign must be laughing their asses off....they have totally steered the debate to an issue that the republicans cannot win... instead of pounding kerry on things such as the enormous amount of absenteeism on important voting issues....and when he`s around, his liberal voting record...

he`s trying to paint himself as a moderate, which his record refutes...

why can`t a politician just say,"i`m a liberal and i`m proud of it"...

what`s wrong with being liberal?...if that`s what you are,cop to it....don`t try and dance around it...

Drudge is as much of a journalist as the dope addict Rush Limbaugh!

?Drudge is not a reporter, a journalist or a newsgatherer. He is, as he himself admits, simply a purveyor of gossip. See Complaint, Exs. 6, 8. His argument that he should benefit from the "news gathering exception" to subsection (a)(4) of the long-arm statute merits no serious consideration.?

This is not speculation or commentary from any political type. This is the legal opinion of a judge who presided over a defamation suit in which Drudge was involved a few years ago. (SIDNEY BLUMENTHAL and JACQUELINE JORDAN BLUMENTHAL, Plaintiffs, v. MATT DRUDGE and AMERICA ONLINE, INC., Defendants., Civil Action No. 97-1968 (PFL), UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, 992 F. Supp. 44; 1998 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 5606; 26 Media L. Rep. 1717; 12 Comm. Reg. (P & F) 367, April 22, 1998, Decided, April 22, 1998, Filed)

The suit was filed because on August 10, 1997, Drudge ran the following hateful smear against Blumenthal, who had just been given a political appointment by then-President Clinton:

i would agree however that all drudge does is put out stories....he doesnt really write many...

however many would argue that the biggest problem is the American media today are which stories do they choose to run and where do they run them?

Drudge has his style, and Tom Brokaw has his style.....

Drudge's "style" is to post each and every rumor that he hears in hopes that one of them might be true so he can look like Mr. Scoop... like that "big" Kerry infidelity scandal that turned out to not be true, or how about this one...

XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX WED JUNE 30, 2004 11:18:25 ET XXXXX

VICE PRESIDENT HILLARY; SPECULATION INTENSIFIES IN WASHINGTON
Official Washington and the entire press corps will be rocked when Hillary Rodham Clinton is picked as Kerry's VP and a massive love fest will begin!
