Its situational GJN.......it is not black and white as you suggest. Trust me when I say I understand the logic of keeping it within two scores....BUT:
Only a few minutes left in the game. There is not like it is a full quarter where if you are down 11....other team scores a FG and now down 14 instead of 15...big difference.
The chances are you wont recover one kick onsides.....let alone two so you are sin hail mary mind set anyhow......
If you are lucky enough to get the first onsides kick and score a TD.....down 12 or 11...you of course still need to make the 2 point... You have to make the 2 point at some point so why not go for it when you are hot and just scored twice? Why wait? Think about it.....the chances of kicking a fg instead of going for a TD if you recover an onsides kick on first try in that situation....is SLIM at best...you chuck it down field because with time ticking off the clock...you are looking to score a TD. This happens ALL THE TIME in the NFL. You know you need your next chance to be a FG! If you miss the two point at any point, you need two TD's anyway....so go get it with 3 minutes or so left on the clock...
If there was a lot of time left in the game....you kick the extra point....I 100% agree....but not with only a few minutes left in 4th in a hail mary situation anyhow....that's the point I have been trying to make. Agree or not....that is my opinion
