What's that like. I am currently un-employed for a living.
Its not to bad at all. I drive locally. Home everyday and I only work 6-7 hrs a day, 4 days a week and get paid for 40hrs.
Ive been with this company for 8 yrs. This job is the exception not the rule.
I started off driving over the road (long haul) about 10 yrs ago. If you have kids at home that really sucks because you take off on Sun night and dont get back home till Fri sometime. If your single or dont have any kids its a great way to make money. Just put your spouse in the truck with you and off you go.
Good points for over the road
Job security..There is such a shortage of drivers (otr) you can walk into anyplace and get a job.
Money.. the going rate is between .35 and .42 a mile. You can put in 2500-3000 miles a week without any problem.
No boss..Its basically up to you to get the load there on time. There is no one looking over your shoulder all the time.
Your the biggest thing on the road...You learn real quick that most cars like to cut in front of you and then stop and make a turn because they couldnt wait the extra 2 seconds by staying behind you.
You fix that by being a little aggresive while driving and you dont have a problem.
T and A shots...You can see directly down into the car next to you. Once in a while you will get flashed. When women drivers wear a skirt and prop there left leg up by the dash you get a perfect money shot. I would like to thank all the ladies that do this.
Bad points.
Sometimes long waits to get trailer loaded/unloaded. You dont get paid anything until after you have sat for 4 hrs. and then its not worth it. Picked up a load of beer once in New Jersey and had to sit for 12 hrs while it was being made. Talk about being pissed.
Every now and then you wont be home for the weekend. It dosent happen to often but when it does it really sucks.
Lot Lizards (hookers) knocking on your cab door while you are trying to sleep wanting to know if you want company
. Nastiest things you will ever see.
If anyone was going to do it I would tell them to get their CDL (thru a major company not a driving school) and drive otr for 6-12 months. Then you will be able to get a local job after that and be home every night.
If you lived around here you could have a job tommorow because we are short 1 driver and they need to fill the job as quick as possible.
