28— Matt Olson, Atl
25— Pete Alonso, NYM
24— Luis Robert, CWS
22— Jorge Soler Mia/Mookie Betts LA/Kyle Schwarber Phil
21— Ronald Acuna, Atl

Quote of the Day
“I view myself as a starter in this league; I don’t think there are 32 guys better than me. But this is the situation I am in, and I understand that. As soon as I don’t think I’m one of the best 32, or a little lower, I’ll be watching football on TV.”
Andy Dalton, now a QB with the Carolina Panthers

Monday’s quiz
Who holds the Dallas Cowboys’ career record for receiving yards?

Sunday’s quiz
Bert Jones holds the Colts’ record for longest TD pass ever, a 90-yard pass to Roger Carr, against Buffalo

Saturday’s quiz

***********************************************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Sunday……..

— Comic legend Mel Brooks turned 97 years old last week; what a life he’s having. Not only is he a comic genius, he served in the Army in World War II— he was involved in the Battle of the Bulge— his infantry division was sent to the forward edge of the battle areas, helping to clear German land mines so Allied forces could advance.

From there he became a Hollywood giant, as a writer, producer, actor. One of my favorite TV shows as a kid was Get Smart, about a spy agency. The show’s main character, Maxwell Smart, had a phone in the sole of his shoe— the first cellphone, way back in 1965.

Anyway, happy birthday Mr Brooks. Thanks for all the laughs……..

— July 1 is now known as Bobby Bonilla Day in baseball; the Mets have to pay Bonilla every July 1st; way back in 2000, the Mets agreed to buy out the remaining $5.9M on Bonilla’s contract, but instead of paying Bonilla the $5.9M at the time, the Mets agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2M for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, including a negotiated 8% interest.

This genius move will cost the Mets a total of $29,831,205, instead of $5.9M.

So…….every July 1st, the Mets send Bonilla $1,193,248.20, and will until 2035.

There are other players who have contract payments like this one, but the Bonilla contract has become by far the most famous one.

— Atlanta Braves put eight guys on the NL All-Star team; Texas Rangers put six guys on the AL squad.

— In their last five games, Braves outscored their opponents 16-1 in the first inning.

— Manny Machado’s splits this year:
vs lefties: is hitting .356 with a .945 OPS.
vs righties: is hitting .205 with a .612 OPS.

— Zac Gallen’s splits this year:
home: 8-0, 1.50 in nine starts.
road: 2-2, 5.08 in eight starts.

— Former Bears’ QB Jay Cutler threw out the first pitch before the Guardians-Cubs game Sunday night. Cutler was the Bears’ QB for eight years, going 51-51 as their starter— he holds Bears’ records for passing yards, passing TD’s.

Back in 2017, Cutler was supposed to be the new guy in the TV booth for CBS’ NFL games, but the Dolphins came along and offered him $10M to play another year, so he signed on there and Tony Romo got the TV gig.

Too bad; I’m curious how Cutler would’ve been on TV; he was in a reality show with his future ex-wife Kristin Cavallari, which was mostly about her flagship store for her jewelry line. Cutler had a sarcastic side, he might’ve been good.

— San Diego State has apparently decided against bolting the Mountain West Conference; the price tag to leave was just too expensive, even if another league wanted them, which is unclear.

If the Aztecs left the Mountain West before June 30, they would’ve had to cough up $16.5M. If they left after June 30, the price tag jumped to $34M, and that ain’t happening.

Orioles 2, Twins 1— Baltimore salvages the last game of a 3-game series; they scored a total of three runs in the three games.

Nationals 5, Phillies 4— Washington won six of its last eight games.

Brewers 6, Pirates 3— Milwaukee also won six of its last eight games.

Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 4— Jarren Duran went 5-5 with four doubles for Boston, only the 50th player since 1901 to hit four doubles in a game.

Reds 4, Padres 2— Tyler Stephenson’s pinch-hit homer in the 8th inning was the game-winner.

Guardians 8, Cubs 6 (10)— Cleveland blew a 6-0 lead; Cubs scored four runs in the bottom of the 9th, but

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL— Braves, Mil/Cin, Arizona. Wild Cards: Marlins, Dodgers, Giants
AL— Rays, Twins, Rangers. Wild Cards: Orioles, New York, Astros

— A belated Happy Canada Day to our neighbors to the north; hard to believe that 2023 is half over already. Tomorrow is July 4th; I’ve already started doing some football prep for the fall.

As Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Quote of the Day
“I could tell he wanted to get back in it. I could tell he was looking for a committed organization and ownership that gave him the great support that he got in New Orleans from the Benson family. I think he definitely found that with the Broncos’ new ownership. They’re going to give him what he needs and what he wants.”
Peyton Manning, talking about new Broncos’ coach Sean Payton

363— Mark McGwire
269— Reggie Jackson
254— Jose Canseco
230— Eric Chavez
198— Jason Giambi
192— Sal Bando

Quote of the Day
“We needed a win. The momentum of that one made it a big win. Two do-or-die kind of plays there. The first one, the game’s over if you don’t make the play. The second one, there’s no risk. Two accurate throws, which is the most important part.”
Cubs’ OF Ian Happ, who threw two runners out at the plate in extra innings

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Invincible, the true story about a 30-year old bartender who makes the Eagles as a special teams player, what well-known actor plays Philadelphia coach Dick Vermeil?

Tuesday’s quiz
Evan Longoria has hit the most home runs ever by a Tampa Bay Ray.

Monday’s quiz
Jason Witten holds the Dallas Cowboys’ career record for receiving yards.

*************************************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

— Modern baseball: Red Sox OF Jarren Duran went 2-3 Tuesday, with a double/triple, a day after he went 5-5, with four doubles. That had only happened only 49 other times in the last 100 years, a guy hitting four doubles in a game.
So, in two days, Duran went 7-8, with five doubles and a triple. Pretty impressive.
Down 6-1 in the 7th inning Tuesday, Duran was due up, and they freakin’ pinch-hit for him!!!!
How the BLEEP do you pinch-hit for a young player who was 7-8 with five doubles and a triple the last two days? Do you WANT him to be confident? This makes no sense.

— Teams like the Reds, Diamondbacks, Orioles are vastly improved this year; seems like with the new rules, teams with lot of guys who run really fast have an advantage. Go figure.

— Padres 8, Angels 5: Rough day for the Halos Tuesday
They announced Mike Trout has a broken hamate bone in his wrist, is out 4-6 weeks.
Shohei Ohtani got whacked around in this game, left with blister issues.
Anthony Rendon fouled a ball off his shin, was on crutches after the game.

— San Diego was 30-17 in one-run games last year; they’re 5-15 this season, which helps explain why they’re ten games out of first place.
— San Diego DFA’d veteran DH Nelson Cruz, a popular guy in the clubhouse but a 43-year old DH who was hitting .245 this year, with a .681 OPS.

— Reds 8, Nationals 4
Cincinnati won six of its last seven games, is 47-39 now.
Elly De La Cruz snapped out of a slump, went 4-4 in this game.

— Guardians 6, Braves 5 (10)— Atlanta’s 9-game win streak comes to an end.

— Mets acquired two relievers from Seattle, Chris Flexen and Trevor Gott in exchange for lefty reliever Zach Muckenhirn.

— Cubs 7, Brewers 6 (11)
Chicago blew a 6-2 8th inning lead, but won the game on a single by Nico Hoerner.
Cubs’ OF Ian Happ threw two runners out at the plate in extra innings.

— Mets 8, Arizona 5— Marte, Nimmo, Alvarez all homered; Marte knocked in three runs.

— Twins 9, Royals 3— Carlos Correa got his 1,000th career hit.

— A’s 1, Tigers 0 (10)
A’s had only one hit in the first nine innings; Ryan Noda’s 10th inning single was the game-winner.
Oakland now has 24 wins; they’re 4-3 in their last seven games. I’d call them spunky, but every time I’ve done that this year, they’ve gone on a long losing streak.

JP Sears tossed 7.1 scoreless innings for the A’s.
— Mariners 6, Giants 0— Logan Gilbert tossed a 105-pitch complete game shutout.

— Movie of the Day: The Rewrite (2014)— An Oscar-winning screenwriter in a slump leaves Hollywood to teach screenwriting at Binghamton U, an obscure college in New York, where he falls for a single mom taking classes there.
Hugh Grant is the screenwriter, Marisa Tomei is the student. JK Simmons, Allison Janney play professors.

I went to college at a state school in New York; no one in any of my classes looked anything like Marisa Tomei. Go figure.
This is a nice movie, a good movie with some low-key humor.

— College football bowl game Trend of the Day:
underdogs covered six of the last seven Rose Bowls.

— Makes me laugh when a right-handed batter checks his swing and immediately points to the first base umpire, like the ump is automatically going to say he didn’t swing. Sometimes the batter and the catcher both point to the first base ump.

— Joey Chestnut ate 62 hot dogs in 10:00 after a lengthy lightning delay Tuesday afternoon, and won the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest in Brooklyn. His betting total wound up at 71.5 weiners, so he won the contest while underperforming on a humid day in New York. Casinos said they made some money on the event; most gamblers bet the over.

— An interesting question came up during the Rangers-Red Sox game Tuesday; Boston had a rally going, the Rangers changed pitchers. While the reliever is walking in from the bullpen, a huge downpour starts, and the umpires call for the tarp to be put on the field.
The question is this: Does that reliever still have to face three batters, even if the rain delay lasted 2-3 hours? He already warmed up; lot of teams don’t like pitchers to keep working after a long rain delay. The guy wound up pitching an inning after the rain delay, but I never heard if that question was answered.

“Getting a little taste of one snap in the NFL. it’s almost like the biggest tease of all teases, right? I definitely have just learned to take every moment for what it is and enjoy where you’re at in this present moment and understand the capabilities and things that you could endure throughout the life and just be able to approach every day like it’s your last.”

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here……..

— Back in January, I dumped DirecTV for YouTube TV, so I had forgotten about this, but the FOX channel in Albany is still blacked out on DirecTV, and now I’m told the ABC channel in Albany is also off DirecTV. Channel 10 is one of the main college football channels, so people who like sports are likely to be dumping DirecTV as autumn approaches.

— Miami Marlins are 51-38 as we approach the All-Star break; they’re the #1 Wild Card team in the NL right now. Marlins have played 20 games this season that were tied after five innings; they’re 14-6 in those 20 games.

— Manager of the Year race in the National League will be interesting:
Arizona is 50-38, hanging on to first place in the NL West; the last three years, they were 151-233, so Tory Lovullo is a candidate.

Cincinnati is 49-39, in first place in NL Central; they were 62-100 last year, have made the playoffs once since 2014. David Bell is a candidate.

Miami is 51-38; they’ve been in the playoffs once in the last 20 years— that was the shortened season in 2020. They haven’t won a playoff game since they won the 2003 World Series. That makes Skip Schumaker a candidate.

— Major league attendance is up 8.4% so far this season, a good sign for the sport. They’ve done a great job selling the rule changes.

— On June 23, 1971, a pitcher named Rick Wise threw a no-hitter; he also hit two home runs in that game. Pretty good night.

Rick Wise pitched 18 years in the big leagues, had a 188-181 record. He made two All-Star teams, and went 17-14 during that 1971 season.

After that season, he was traded even up for Steve Carlton, that’s how good he was. He wound up in Boston in 1975 and helped the Red Sox get to the World Series.

Rick Wise had an underrated career; if he played for a New York team on June 23, 1971, he’d be a freakin’ legend now.

Brewers 6, Cubs 5 (10)— Victor Ceratini hit a walk-off homer; Milwaukee led 4-1 after five innings, but blew the lead.

— Tampa Bay/Texas are both in first place, but they’re limping into the All-Star break.

Rangers are 4-9 in their last 13 games; Tampa Bay has lost five games in a row. All-Star break is coming at just the right time for both teams.

Mets 9, Arizona 0— Francisco Lindor went 5-for-5, with two triples and a homer. Mets and their $375M payroll have won five in a row, as they head to San Diego for the weekend.

— Back in 2019, Patrick Mahomes threw 26 TD passes; those 26 passes were in the air an average of 17.3 yards.

Last year, Mahomes threw 41 TD passes; only one of those 41 passes was in the air more than 19 yards.

— NBA Summer League starts today in Las Vegas; Toronto Raptors have turned a conference room at the Wynn Hotel into a practice facility. If you like the NBA, good idea to take a trip to Las Vegas some year and watch the summer league in person.

— West Virginia transfer Okonkwo has bolted from Morgantown to North Carolina. He played in 31 games last year for the Mountaineers, playing 11 minutes/game, and has two years of eligibility left.

Tar Heels have now added five transfers this offseason.

— 6’3 Serbian guard Djordje Curcic has committed to the Saint Louis Billikens, Travis Ford’s third international recruit in the last month.

— Movie of the Day: Good Will Hunting (1997)— A custodian at M.I.T., has a gift for math, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life.

Matt Damon is the custodian; Ben Affleck is his best friend. Robin Williams is the psychologist; he is great in this movie.

— College football bowl trend of the day: favorites covered seven of last eight Cotton Bowls.

— Random golf trivia: Andrew Magee is the only golfer ever to get a hole-in-one on a par-4 hole during a PGA tournament. He aced the 17th hole at the 2001 Phoenix Open.

— Happy 77th birthday to Fred Dryer, who played 13 years in the NFL, then became an actor— he was the star of the NBC series Hunter, from 1984-91.

Dryer played for the 1979 NFC champ Rams; he is the only NFL player ever to record two safeties in the same game.

Happy birthday Fred!!!
