Wednesday’s 6-pack:
— Astros 7, Orioles 6— Tucker hit a grand slam in 9th inning.
— Braves 8, Pirates 6— Atlanta scored three runs in 9th inning.
— Tigers 6, Twins 0— Eduardo Rodriguez tossed 7 shutout IP.
— Guardians 1, Blue Jays 0— Tanner Bibee tossed 7 shutout IP.
— Mariners 2, Padres 0— Logan Gilbert allowed one baserunner in 7 IP.
— Narionals 4-5, Phillies 8-4— Meneses’ 9th inning HR earned Washington a split.

Quote of the Day
“You see that list they got, sorry-ass group. I’m sorry. I’m happy for the people who make it, it’s cool for some of the guys who got there, some of them probably don’t even start on their teams, I don’t know, I don’t want to look at it…….”
Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas, talking about USA’s roster for the FIBA World Cup

Wednesday’s quiz
Where did Buffalo Bills’ QB Josh Allen play his college football?

Tuesday’s quiz
Mike Scioscia managed the Angels when they won their only World Series title.

Monday’s quiz
Ron Washington was manager of the Texas Rangers when they made the World Series in 2010 and 2011.

*******************************************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— I have YouTube TV this year for the first time; one of the few bad parts is that they don’t have SNY or the YES Network, so can’t watch Mets/Bronx games live on the MLB.TV app— you can watch replays of the games, 90 minutes after they’re over.
There is, however, a way around this on MLB.TV— MLB Big Inning, which is like NFL Red Zone, they show 3-4 games on a screen at one time, and they show the New York games, which is a good thing. MLB Big Inning went off the air at 10:30 Monday night, kind of early— I’m hoping they change that to at least midnight on nights when there is a lot of action going on.

— Baltimore Orioles are having an excellent season, a breakthrough year, but then this week their ownership screwed things up, off the field at least.
Before a game in Tampa couple weeks ago, TV play-by-play guy Kevin Brown was talking before the game about how the Orioles are turning things around. He noted how the Orioles had been beaten regularly by Tampa Bay the last few years, but not this year. He was just reciting facts, and touting how this year’s Orioles are a great story- they even had graphics.
Apparently the Orioles’ brass didn’t enjoy hearing how Tampa Bay had been whacking around the Orioles the last few years; Brown has been off TV since then— he did do three games on the radio, but hasn’t been heard from since.
This isn’t good; other announcers across the country shredded the Orioles on TV Monday nite, including both New York City play-by-play guys. Announcers need to be able to speak the truth or else they lose their credibility.
Orioles’ ownership should sit back, get out of their own way and enjoy the ride.

— Last two starts for White Sox P Dylan Cease
Wednesday: 1.2 IP, 79 PT, allowed 7 runs. 5 outs on 79 pitches- no bueno.
Monday: 5.1 IP, 104 PT, allowed no runs, one hit— he did walk 7 guys, but got a win.

— Texas Rangers 3B Josh Jung is out six weeks; he had an operation on his broken left thumb.

— White Sox beat Bronx 5-1 Monday night; New York manager Aaron Boone got tossed from the game for arguing balls/strikes. Boone does more bitching than just about any manager, but in this case, he had a gripe.
There is a Twitter account, Umpire Scorecards; they post a report card on every umpire, every night, and it is pretty detailed, showing how many pitches the home plate ump got right/wrong.
In this game Monday, Laz Diaz was the home plate umpire; he called 50 strikes in the game, but only 33 of them were actually strikes. This is a terrible percentage for a big league umpire, but at least he was consistent. His strike zone was incredibly wide, but he missed 8.6 more pitches than the average umpire does in a game.
By contrast, he called 116 pitches balls, only two of those were strikes.
Not surprisingly, when Diaz is behind the plate this season, under is 9-3. Enough said.

— Atlanta Braves are the first team since the 1944 Cincinnati Reds to have four players play in each of their first 110 games in a season: Acuna, Albies, Olson, Riley.

— Random fact: Wade Boggs was the first player whose 3,000th hit was a home run.

— Movie of the Day: Last Vegas (1988)— Four friends take a break from their day-to-day lives to throw a bachelor party in Las Vegas for their last remaining single pal.
Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline, hard to go wrong here. Throw in Mary Steenburgen as a lounge singer in Binion’s; excellent cast.
Just like in The Hangover, someone wins $85,000 the first time they sit at a blackjack table. Next time I’m in Las Vegas, I need to play more blackjack, it seems kind of easy

— College Football Trend of the Day: since 2017, NC State is 4-11-1 ATS as a road underdog.

— Random fact: Last year, 107 different goalies played in an NHL game, the 2nd-most ever; the year before, 119 different goalies appeared between the pipes.

— Washington Commanders have a new offensive coordinator this year, Eric Bieniemy, who came over from the highly successful Chiefs. Lateral move, a little unusual; there had been rumors that Patrick Mahomes didn’t like Bieniemy’s coaching style, and how Andy Reid had be a buffer between the two guys.
Now, before Washington had played a preseason game, there are reports that some Commander players have gone to head coach Ron Rivera, expressing concern (complaining) over Bieniemy’s intensity during practices.
Bieniemy said this: ”I’m always going to be loud, always going to be vocal, always going to demand from my leaders. If I ain’t doing my job, my ass gets fired. It’s my job and my responsibility to make sure I’m getting our guys to do what I’m expecting them to do.”
This season should be interesting, seeing how Washington’s QB is Sam Howell, who started one game in his rookie year last season.

— Last team to repeat as NFC East champs? 2004 Philadelphia Eagles. Eagles also won the NFC East last year; can they break the streak this year?

— There must be a boatload of money involved with running fantasy football leagues; all you see now are ads for leagues, and tipster services trying to sell their advice. You see lot more ads for fantasy advice than for gambling advice.

— HBO started Season 2 of Winning Time Sunday night, the story of the Magic Johnson-era Lakers. One difference right away: their disclaimer about how their show isn’t 100% factual is a lot bigger on the screen, and it stays on the screen longer than it did last year.
Last year, the show did a hatchet job on NBA legend Jerry West, and he threatened to sue the writers for making him look like a crazy person. West coached the Lakers just before they drafted Magic Johnson; he was later in their front office.
Interesting show if you like the NBA and remember the Lakers/Celtics rivalry in the 80’s.

Thursday’s 6-pack:
Odds for the St Jude golf tournament this week:
6-1— Scheffler
9-1— McIlroy, Rahm
16-1— Cantlay, Schauffele
20-1— Hovland, Morikawa
25-1— Fleetwood, Hatton
30-1— Fowler

Quote of the Day
“I’ve always wanted to throw a no-hitter.”
Michael Lorenzen, who has now thrown a no-hitter

Thursday’s quiz
When Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver won his 300th major league game, what team was he pitching for?

Wednesday’s quiz
Buffalo Bills’ QB Josh Allen played his college football at Wyoming.

Tuesday’s quiz
Mike Scioscia managed the Angels when they won their only World Series title.

***************************************************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud……

— Phillies 7, Nationals 0
Michael Lorenzen threw a no-hitter in his second start for the Phillies.
He threw 25 pitches in the first inning, still tossed a complete game (124 PT)
Tough decision for manager Rob Thomson, whether to leave him in for all 9 innings. He did the old-school thing, leaving Lorenzen in.
Vinny Castellanos hit two homers, including the 200th of his career.
Weston Wilson hit a home run in his first MLB at-bat; he also walked twice and scored three runs, in his first MLB game after seven years in the minors.
Last time a Phillies player homered in his first MLB at-bat was Marlon Anderson, 25 years ago.

— My cousin texted me last night and asked if I had ever heard of the “Curse of Rocky Colavito” which I had not.
Colavito was a power-hitting outfielder for Cleveland; his first four full years in the majors, he hit 129 home runs— he led the American League with 42 taters in 1959.
Then, on April 17, 1960 (weird time for a trade, two days before the season started— back then, the season started later), the Indians traded Colavito straight-up to Detroit for Harvey Kuenn, who had made the All-Star team seven years in a row, and led the AL in batting (.353) in 1959.
Very unusual trade; two star players getting exchanged two days before the season started; Kuenn only played one year in Cleveland- they dealt him to the Giants that winter.
Colavito bounced around a little after that; he ever re-surfaced in Cleveland for a couple years, knocking in 108 runs for the Indians in 1965. He wound up with 374 career homers and an OPS of .848. Damn good hitter.
Anyway, there are people in Cleveland who think the Indians/Guardians are cursed because of that trade— they haven’t won a World Series since 1948, though they did it make it there in 1995, 1997 and 2016. Detroit won the World Series in 1968, so no curse for them.
There is actually a book, The Curse of Rocky Colavito: A Loving Look at a Thirty-Year Slump, written by Terry Pluto, who is an excellent writer.

— I have an odd memory of Colavito; he pitched twice in the majors, once in 1958, once in 1968 for New York. The 1968 game had to be on a weekend; I watched the game on TV. He threw 2.2 innings in relief, was probably the first time I had ever heard of a position player pitching (I was 8 years old back then).
New York trailed 5-0 when he entered the game (first game of a twinbill) in the 4th inning, but by time he was replaced, they led 6-5, and Colavito wound up getting the win.
As we said before, Detroit went on to win the World Series that season.

— Speaking of the Tigers, their P Eduardo Rodriguez declined a trade to the Dodgers last week, saying he wanted to stay closer to his family, which is his choice, but this is unusual.
Rodriguez doesn’t want to pitch for a contender? He’s rich (by 2026, he’ll have $100M in career earnings), he could bring the family to LA with him. Who would rather live in Detroit than in Los Angeles?

— Miami Marlins have a 20-year old pitcher Eury Perez, who they shut down for a while after his July 6 start, because they wanted to restrict his innings pitched. Guys who make a huge jump in IP from one year to the next tend to get hurt more than other pitchers.
Anyway, Marlins were 51-38 when they shut him down; they were 7-17 while he was gone, now they’re 2-1 since he started pitching again. Interesting decision.

— Movie of the Day— Prince of Tides (1991)— A high school football coach from South Carolina comes to New York to talk to his suicidal sister’s psychiatrist about their family history; because it is the movies, the coach/psychiatrist fall in love, which complicates things.
Nick Nolte is the coach, Barbra Streisand the psychiatrist. Blythe Danner is the coach’s wife, George Carlin has a small role as the psychiatrist’s neighbor.
Very good movie; the psychiatrist’s husband is a big-time violin player. There is a great scene at a dinner party, I’ll leave it at that, but this is a good movie with a little bit of a surprise ending.

— NFL Trend of the Day— Last two years, Dallas Cowboys are 17-8 ATS as a favorite.

— Every summer, Nick Saban August invites speakers to Alabama’s football practice facility during fall camp; Kobe Bryant, Michael Phelps had done it in the past.
This year, Saban brought in a speaker to address sports gambling with his players, someone who is kind of famous……….Pete Rose.
Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon was fired in May after being linked to suspicious betting activity surrounding an Alabama-LSU baseball game.

— Nick Kerr, son of Golden State head coach Steve Kerr, is the new coach of the G League’s Santa Cruz Warriors. It helps to know people
Nick Kerr worked in the San Antonio Spurs’ video room as an assistant in 2017-18; he then joined Golden State’s G League affiliate as an assistant for two years.

— A’s 2, Texas 0
Four Oakland pitchers combined to toss a 5-hit shutout.
A’s are 3-2 in their last five games.

— Mariners 6, Padres 1
Cal Raleigh’s 2-run homer in 8th inning was a game-winner.
San Diego is 8-22 in games where the winning run scored from the 8th inning on.

— NFL exhibition games resume tonight, with two games on NFL Network. Fun to watch, but I would not recommend wagering on them— the teams are looking at players to fill spots on their roster, winning isn’t the first priority, if it is a priority at all. Caution is advised.

Days like this series, we just give up. Like literally, we just give up instead of keep grinding, keep pushing. We’ve got to forget about yesterday and keep moving.”

Quote of the Day
“I never bet on the Ryder Cup. While it is well known that I always enjoy a friendly wager on the course, I would never undermine the integrity of the game. I have also been very open about my gambling addiction. I have previously conveyed my remorse, took responsibility, have gotten help, have been fully committed to therapy that has positively impacted me and I feel good about where I am now.”
Phil Mickelson

Saturday’s quiz
Who was manager of the Mets, last time they were in the World Series?

Friday’s quiz
When Michael Jordan played for the Dream Team in the 1992 Olympics, he wore uniform number 9.

Thursday’s quiz
When Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver won his 300th major league game, he was pitching for the Chicago White Sox.

*******************************************

Saturday’s Den: Random stuff on a summer night…….

— Learned something unusual this week; Mets had actor Hank Azaria in their broadcast booth during their game the other night. He is a big Mets fan, knowledgeable, but he said on air that he wasn’t allowed to talk about any of his acting projects, because the Screen Actors’ Guild is on strike.

Talking about his projects would be construed as promoting movies/TV shows and during a strike, that doesn’t happen, so all they did was talk about baseball, which was good.

— Minnesota Twins have been in the playoffs six times since 2004; they went 0-18 in those playoff games. No bueno.

— Dodgers’ OF Chris Taylor is the only major leaguer EVER whose first home run was a grand slam, and his 100th career homer was also a grand slam.

— There have been four major league pitchers who went to Fullerton Union HS in Orange County, CA; all four of them have thrown no-hitters in the major leagues.

Walter Johnson, a Hall of Famer
Steve Busby, who pitched for the early Royals teams
Mike Warren, who played minor league ball here in Albany, NY
Michael Lorenzen, who tossed a no-hitter for the Phillies this week.

— During Lorenzen’s no-hitter Wednesday, Phillies’ CF Johan Rojas caught nine fly balls, the most fly balls one outfielder has ever caught in a no-hitter.

— Movie of the Day— A Star is Born (2018)— A famous musician discovers a young singer in a small club, and helps her find her own fame as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.

Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga are the singers, Anthony Ramos plays her friend, Andrew Dice Clay is her father. Sam Elliott plays Bradley Cooper’s brother.

This movie has been made four times (1937, 1954, 1976, 2018); this version is very similar to the 1954 movie, with Judy Garland/James Mason. Very good movie.

First hour of the movie is great fun; second half is a little depressing. Tremendous music for sure and a terrific story, with an unfortunate ending.

— NFL Trend of the Day— NFL teams other than the Broncos are 19-7-3 ATS when their previous game was in Denver.

— Why did the elephant quit the circus?

He was sick of working for peanuts.

— The guy who sculpts the busts for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Ohio played football at BYU back when Jim McMahon was the Cougars’ QB.

— When I was a kid, there were two guys who lived in my neighborhood who drove Cadillacs; one owned a funeral parlor, one owned a beer distributorship.

Owning a funeral parlor sounds kind of depressing, but selling beer for a living sounds kind of fun. One thing for sure, you wouldn’t run out of customers.

Packers 36, Bengals 19— Jordan Love was 7-10/46 passing, with one TD pass.

Lions 21. Giants 16— Detroit trailed 13-3 when they ran a punt back 95 yards for a TD.
Lions scored game-winning TD with 1:51 left.

Falcons 19, Dolphins 3— Atlanta scored only two TD’s of the game; a 79-yard punt return and 26-yard pick-6.

Steelers 27, Buccaneers 17
Rookie WR Kade Warner caught one pass for 10 yards; he is Kurt Warner’s son.
Wolford/Mayfield played QB for Tampa Bay; they were both on the Rams last year.

Commanders 17, Browns 15— Washington QB Howell was 9-12 for 77 yards passing and a TD; he is expected to be the Commanders’ starter.

Cardinals 18, Broncos 17
Denver led 10-3 after three quarters.
Arizona scored TD/got 2-point conversion with 0:02 left for the win.
Elliott Fry made a 55-yard field goal for the Broncos.
