let me correct myself, it is not Necessary, BUT, it can be used as a strategic component of the game.

If Steve Moore had gotten up uninjured, Bertuzzi would have probably stayed in the game. Do you know how often sh*t like this and worse goes on and the refferees miss it. Unfortunately there is always a knee jerk reaction when someone gets severely hurt. That is truely a crime. But EVERY night in the NHL someone gets hit from behind, crosschecked in the neck etc., and it doesn't make the highlite reel, because the player is not severely hurt. As a matter of fact, they often are seeking revenge because of the cheap shot they receive. How would you like someone putting their stick between your legs, and pulling back hard with the blade up, trying to grab your nuts. THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. If you are watching on TV you probably won't see it , but go to a game and watch the action in front of the net, don't watch the puck, watch the play in front of the net . The problem is, so much stuff is gotten away with.
Unlike most of you I have two kids playing hockey. I would love for them to play in a safe environment. The safest environment is to nip it in the bud. I think, it is severe penalties for infractions, regardless of the outcome, instead of severe penalties only when the victim is SEVERELY injured.
How come a high stick where it glances off a visor is unknown to everyone(except when the player goes to the bench, and sees the stick mark on his visor) Yet the very same high stick that takes out an eye would be on every sportsreel in the world. This is the very same high stick. This happens every day where players miss losing an eye by inches. The very same high stick, but which is worse.
Just remember you heard it here first. Someday down the road some guy will lose his nuts. There will be an outcry, suspend him for life, put him in jail, but this happens in almost every high level game, hundreds of times a night, but until someone on TV gets it good, nothing will happen.
