Is ersatz an English word?

It's German for substitute or the like...

....

....

There would be a lot of great comebacks that never would have happened if all fighters had Ortiz's attitude.

I have been slacking on the weekend reviews, but here is a quick one. I will try to do these more often.

Just my opinions here - but looking back helps me plan better for the future.

4 underdogs won this weekend:
Maidana, Bakhtov, Bundu, and Herelius.

Best fight of the weekend:
Ortiz vs. Maidana

Worst fight of the weekend:
Molitor vs. Ruiz
Foreman vs. Bundrage (the boxing gods stopped this one early)

Best performances of the weekend:
Maidana was incredible
but Danny Jacobs and Nkosinathi Joyi were spectacular, both giving standout showings

Worst performance:
I gotta go with Molitor, who BARELY scraped by a fight that was completely setup to make him shine again in Canada...whoops

Best punch:
The straight right that Maidana flattened Ortiz with in round 2 would have stopped a lot of fighters. A thing of beauty.

Prospect to watch:
Dmitri Pirog, who shutout Kofi Janutah in Germany and looked VERY good.

Prospect to dump in the trash:
Steffen Kretschmann. Now we know why this stiff was protected for so long. Like a giant oak falling in the woods. Ugh. Just terrible.

See everyone next week.

yes and a few more fighters alive today if fighters and cornermen had Ortiz's smarts. Levander Johnson comes to mind. Corrales was never the same after Castillo 1 and you can make a reasonable argument that fight was the beginning of the end. All you internet keyboard tough guys calling Ortiz a quitter, etc, it's just so darn transparent that you had $$$$ on Ortiz and are pissed about it. Yea , Vic should have risked brain damage in a losing battle to give a few gambling degenerates a chance to win their wager. Did you mindless simpletons not see him out of it in the corner after taking that hellacious shot against the ropes as the bell rung, that after taking a nasty left hook that cut him open.
What you ought to be doing is questioning yourselves for laying chalk on someone who had been down against Tomas Barrientes and DARIO ESALES..... yea, exactly.. WHO?- journeyman and GoldenBoy unwisely matches him against perhaps the purest puncher in the division with the Kotelinik fight under his belt and then post fight Mr New Deer meat diet for Paq- Oscar walks into the ring with a look of disgust , shaking his head at Ortiz and what was Oscar doing at age 22- being guided perfectly by TopRank against smaller and/or older fighters, just like Top Rank was doing for Ortiz, knowing his flaws, until Ortiz was guided to declare bankruptcy and get a nice signing bonus to go with Golden Boy. So Oscar and all you internet tough guys who I'm sure would have easily stood up to Maidana's punches can go play in traffic.

Very well said punch.
I bet on Victor and was, of course, disappointed to lose the bet.
But I don't blame him a bit for stepping out.

This was not a Robert Guerrero situation. The water was rapidly getting deeper for Ortiz, and he knew he was about to drown. He had given everything he could and came damn close. But it was all but over at the end of the 5th. Maidana was just too much.

I LOVED hearing a guy that honest in the post fight interview and I believe Victor really did undergo a life-changing half hour on Saturday night. This business is SO BRUTAL. IT AIN'T EASY GETTNG YOUR ASS KICKED. and the longer you fight, no mattter how good you are....at some point, somewhere, someone is going to have your number.

Unfortunately, Oscar and all the other blood-thirsty idiots at Golden Boy are already saying he will be back and pumping up the rematch.
http://www.ringtv.com/video/maidanaortiz_postfight_press_conference/

I like Victor a lot and I hope they don't do an immediate rematch. If he walked away, I wouldn't blame him. But the money and the pressure is going to be too much.

How bout a few other fights to work on his game and build the confidence back up first?

Golden Boy really doesn't know what they are doing. I'm sure they will find a way to fuck Danny Garcia and Danny Jacobs up as well.

But, even though they ruin the lives of every promising young fighter they promote, at least they treat the fans well.

$600 bucks for tickets to Wright-Hopkins anyone? How bout $1000 to go see Mayweather-Marquez? What, not a good deal?

watch the end of the press conference....
a guy asked Victor if he quit or the doctor called it....

Oscar interupts Victor and answers for him from the podium
"It was a bad cut. the doctor wouldn't let it go. Victor was continuing no matter what"

THIS IS WHY I HATE OSCAR DE LA HOYA.

Why lie about this? Just let the fighter answer himself! Trying to protect the future at all costs. Damage control. Oscar has been political about his whole career since day 1. Why should he be any different as a promoter. What a scumbag.

I'm going to go watch the Pacquiao-De La Puta fight right now.

Boxing is a terrible way to make a living, and very few people walk away with their senses intact.

But at the same time, if Victor believes it isn't right to be knocked out, what about the opponents he sparked out unconscious ??

I lost money on this fight but I agree with you totally.

One thing I like about MMA is you can tap out and not many people question your toughness.

I would not take the kind of beating that Ortiz AND Maidana took. If that makes me a coward, so be it.

Opting out of a fight is a fine line. In some instances it is absolutely the right thing to do. At other times, it is not and sometimes it can be a very tough call. I do think people have a right to a point of view one way or the other. Of course boxers are going to held to the standard of how boxers normally behave in like situations and not the people who observe and critique them. I do think Ortiz opted out of the fight. On the HBO telecast he clearly shook his head at the ref he was done AND he himself told the doctor to stop the fight. He was cut and swollen and it many have been the right thing to do.

But I've seen guys in more dire straights turn things around and win. Could Ortiz have done that? I don't know. That's the point; we'll never know. I would imagine 10 minutes after the end, he wishes he could have taken that back. Despite Ortiz's dilemma he still seemed in the fight physically. But the problem was mentally he was out of it. He had a doubt and acted on it.

He's never had real resistance in the ring so the experience was new to him so he panicked and opted out. He's only 22 and can choose to build on this and move beyond it or he can get down himself. I think he has the talent to still be a champ and may be able to put this experience in proper perspective. Wager not withstanding, I was sad for the kid and wanted something good for him. He can still be a star in the game with but it's really up to him.

As for Golden Boy's proclamations, clearly that was a bad case of damage control that no one with a brain will buy. And it's obvious Shaefer was trying to steal a points win for Ortiz by checking if the cut was caused by a butt.

punchmaster, the obvious difference is that I don't get paid to take Madaina's punches.

Not that I disagree with you. Just this whole "internet tough guy" thing is out of line. I'm not a professional boxer and can't be held to the same standard as Victor Ortiz. If you were to ask an army vet to enter the ring against a pro boxer, surely he would be scared to do so. Not because he's a coward, but because he is unprepared and doesn't stand a chance.

That said, people are being harsh on him, I agree. He is far more skilled and polished than Madaina, with the right gameplan and strong focus it would be a dominant win for him.

As was mentioned by Romi, he is honest to a fault. He saw Kellerman as his friend expecting consolation, when Kell was acting professional in his questions, and Ortiz gave the wrong answers.

Given his past, it's reasonable to think he just wants a stable, peaceful life, with a loving family. He seems too smart and too polite to be in this sport. Boxing requires intense sacrifice, and he's already sacrificed so much.

A lot of these points are up for debate, NJ- as far as Ortiz being too polite for the sport, he's never had a problem trying to knock guys heads off and has left many seperated from their senses- seems like a killer in the ring. And the right gameplan and focus is no guaranteed victory for Ortiz against Funky Cold Maidana. Maidana is probably better than first meets the eye. What was the last punch to send Ortiz down- a left to the liver, Maidana realizes the value and is good at body punching. I was actually suprised by the variation in Maidana's attack against Kotelnik, up and down, changing pace.... Much was talked about his wide looping punches and that ended up being a crock with that beautiful straight right that decked Ortiz in the first and then when he needed a looping punch he timed a bomb around Ortiz's guard at the end of the 5th round bell which I thought knocked the will and focus out of Ortiz. He obviously hits well with both hands with that damaging left hook, and he also counterupunched , not just crudely leading and chasing Ortiz.... didn't see much of a jab although that is harder against a southpaw . I was just getting frustrated by the amount of people labeling Ortiz a quitter, just like some did to Vasquez in Marquez 1. Ortiz fought hurt, almost got his guy out of there and just ran into an exceptional opponent who wasn't going to be denied and was starting to inflict major damage. Ortiz knew he only had Jacks to Maidana's Aces and decided to fold rather than go all in and get crushed.

you have to remember where Ortiz is from

it wasn't Kansas anymore, it was OXNARD

a gym called LA COLONIA

you come out of the same program as El Feroz, you have to represent

but if i was sitting on a few 100k, i'd opt out too

I think it's quite safe to say Vargas was ruined and never the same after the Trinidad bout and that's a damn shame so now you got me thinking and the more I think about it- what a wise move by Ortiz to ensure he can again fight at an optimum level.
