Hayward leads Celtics to 3rd straight win over 76ers
February 12, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Gordon Hayward scored 26 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:50 remaining, and the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 112-109 on Tuesday night.

Al Horford had 23 points and Jayson Tatum scored 20 and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Celtics continued their dominance over the Sixers.

Playing without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, who sprained his right knee Saturday night, the Celtics beat Philadelphia for the third straight meeting this season after defeating Philadelphia in five games in the Eastern Conference semifinals last season.

Joel Embiid had 23 points and 14 rebounds and Jimmy Butler scored 22 for Philadelphia.

Butler couldn't get a desperation 3 off in time before the buzzer sounded as the Sixers dropped their first game in three since acquiring Tobias Harris in a flurry of moves last week.

HAWKS 117, LAKERS 113

ATLANTA (AP) - Rookie Trae Young had 22 points and 14 assists, John Collins also scored 22 points despite foul trouble, and Atlanta beat Los Angeles.

The Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak despite a triple-double from LeBron James, who had 28 points, 16 assists and 11 rebounds.

The Hawks scored just seven points in the final 6:33 but managed to hold on. Taurean Prince delivered a key 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining, and Young darted past James for a lay-in and a foul that thwarted any hope of a Lakers comeback.

Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Ingram scored 19 points apiece for the Lakers.

MAGIC 118, PELICANS 88

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Disgruntled star Anthony Davis scored three points on 1-of-9 shooting, outplayed badly by big man Nikola Vucevic as Orlando beat listless New Orleans.

Davis played 24 minutes in his third game since his agent told New Orleans the six-time All-Star wanted to be traded to a championship-contending team and won't sign an extension with the Pelicans.

Vucevic had 25 points and 17 rebounds, Evan Fournier scored 22 points, and Jonathan Isaac scored a career-high 20 points, including 16 in the first quarter, when Orlando raced to a 39-11 lead.

SPURS 108, GRIZZLIES 107

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge scored 22 points, including San Antonio's final seven, as the Spurs broke a four-game losing streak by beating Memphis.

Memphis rookie Jaren Jackson Jr. had a chance to tie the game with two free throws with a second left. He missed the first, and, in attempting to miss the second, banked it in, allowing San Antonio to run out the clock.

Memphis was led by a career-high 33 points from Avery Bradley, acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers at the trade deadline. Jonas Valancunius, also a trade deadline acquisition, had 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Patty Mills also scored 22 for San Antonio.

*******************

Wednesday?s List of 13: A snowy list of mid-week musings??.

13) We talk now and then about the football handicapping contests in Las Vegas, the best one being at the Westgate SuperBook, and another really good one at the Golden Nugget.

Signups for the Golden Nugget contest start March 8, $1,000 an entry; you pick seven games a week, college or NFL. Each person can have three entries. Seems like football season just ended; oh wait, it did??. 🙂

More and more of these contests are going to pop up around the country, as legalized gambling spreads. Good way to get people in the door of your casino.

12) Cleveland Browns signed former Chiefs? RB Kareem Hunt, who got into trouble with the NFL after he got into a scuffle with his girlfriend in a hotel last fall, a scuffle that was captured on camera.

11) Jacob deGrom informed the Mets that he will not negotiate a new deal during the season; deGrom?s camp has set Opening Day as the deadline to complete any potential long-term deal.

deGrom can become a free-agent after the 2020 season; he wants a contract that would buy out his remaining arbitration year and extend his agreement with the Mets long term.

10) You can wager one of these four teams (Duke, Michigan, Gonzaga and Kansas) to win the national title at -$125 vs the field (+105). Interesting wager. Gonzaga/Kansas have injury issues, but someone is going to have to beat Duke for you, if you play the field.

9) Surprising fact; according to Wikipedia, El Paso has 683,577 citizens; Boston has 685,094. Wouldn?t have thought that.

8) In case you were wondering, Las Vegas sportsbooks took $145,939,025 in bets on the Super Bowl, 2nd-most of all time; the bettors lost $10,780,319 on those wagers.

7) Atlanta Falcons added former Chiefs? DC Bob Sutton to its stuff, to help coach Dan Quinn with game management. Quinn is expected to run the Falcons? defense next year.

6) TCU basketball coach Jamie Dixon grew up in the Los Angeles area; when was a kid, he starred in several TV commercials, including ads for Volvo, Rice Krispies, Mattel and Bud Light.

5) AAF?s Memphis Express signed QB JaMarcus Russell, who last played in the NFL in 2009; he went 7-18 as a starter in three years with the Oakland Raiders. Memphis got shut out in its AAF opener; they could use some help, but I?m not sure if Russell will help.

4) A?s signed oft-injured lefty starter Brett Anderson; it?ll be his third stint with Oakland.

3) Virginia 69, North Carolina 61? Solid road win for the Cavaliers Monday night, 48 hours after they lost at home to Duke.

2) Nine of 32 NFL teams will have new offensive coordinators next season.

Rich Scangarello is he new OC in San Francisco; he?s made coaching stops at Carleton (2001), Milsaps (?10-?11), Northern Arizona (?12-?14), Wagner (?16). Not exactly football hotbeds.

1) Understood that Kyler Murray is free to choose his own career path, but when a team pays you $210,000 like the A?s did for basically doing nothing, you owe them a phone call or a text to clue them in on your decision before you go in the other direction.

It is common courtesy; Murray?s advisors made him look bad Monday.

Hot & Not Report
February 11, 2019
By YouWager.eu

Who's Hot and Who's Not

Week of February 11th

While last week's piece focused on college basketball out west, it turned out that the streaks I outlined saw plenty of the regression to the mean. Pac-12 road teams made me look foolish for pointing out their struggles a week ago.

From Wednesday through Sunday, Pac-12 road teams went 10-2 ATS (8-4 SU), highlighted by a pair of double-digit wins by Washington State through the state of Arizona when the Cougars were catching double-digit points in both contests. Oddly enough, one of the two teams to fall ATS was the 1st place Washington Huskies, as they suffered their first SU loss in conference play on Saturday against Arizona State.

Hopefully these trends that get highlighted in this piece every week start to hold serve much better, as this week we shift over to the pro basketball ranks and discuss what we could see from NBA teams as they get ready to head into the All-Star break.

Handicapping the NBA right before the All-Star break can come with unique challenges in terms of trying to figure out focus and motivation for guys. The season has been a grind already as the teams are coming up on 60 games played, and with the relatively new week long break for the entire league, vacation and family time starts to be on the forefront of guys minds.

So let's take a look back at what's happened in the NBA betting market the past few years during this week to see if we can use it to our advantage this week as these teams play their final game of the ?first half.?

Who's Hot

NBA teams that are underdogs of 5 or more points in final game before the All-Star Break are 13-5 ATS the last two years ? including 7-1 ATS last season

When you think about it, a run like this by bigger underdogs does have some correlation with motivational/focus levels being low for those teams expected to win. It's definitely not ideal to back a team that's expected to win easy in their final game by a big margin, simply because it's those teams that take the approach that they just have to show up to the court and they'll leave with a victory. That's never a spot I like to be in, regardless of the time of year.

Just last year alone, underdogs that were getting +5 or more in their final game before the break finished with a 7-1 ATS record, and while there were only two outright wins in that scenario ? LA Clippers over Boston and Portland over Golden State ? those two losses came from two teams that finished the year as two of the last four teams standing when the Conference Finals rolled around. So it's not like the league's best are immune from failure in this spot.

This year, we've got three teams playing their final game before the break on Tuesday ? LA Lakers, San Antonio, Utah ? and with the Jazz visiting Golden State out in Oakland, it's likely that we see them fit this exact scenario. On Thursday there aren't that strong of candidates, but Orlando and New Orleans could fit the bill as home underdogs against Charlotte and OKC respectively, so keep an eye on those point spreads when they come out. Although home teams bring up a whole different scenario which I'll get to in a minute.

The rest of the NBA wraps up their pre-All-Star schedule on Wednesday as there are 11 games on the betting board that day, and there will be some solid candidates that will fit this scenario as well. Oddly enough, Golden State is visiting Portland in the exact same situation as the two teams had a year ago ? with Portland winning as +6.5 home dogs, and that is the latter end of a back-to-back for the Warriors. That's definitely a point spread to keep an eye on as well in terms of falling into this role.

Aside from the Blazers being a potentially backable side, Wednesday should also bring us dogs of 5+ with a handful of teams including Sacramento, Phoenix, Detroit and Washington all on the road. Which brings me to...

Who's Not

NBA teams at home in final game before All-Star break went 3-12 ATS last year

From a big picture standpoint, this ties in to bigger favorites struggling as well. For one, favorites tend to lay bigger numbers at home to begin with, and with the road teams still able to treat their final game in a more business-like fashion and not be ?lulled to sleep? with family pulling at them the night before/day with off-court plans or vacation arrangements for the next week. It may have only been one year, but being in hostile territory was not that hostile at all at this point a year ago.

A 3-12 ATS record for home teams in their final game is just atrocious, and while that mark is just a one year sample, you can see situational reasoning behind it, and make cases for it to be a popular angle to take for this year and beyond.

Looking at Wednesday's NBA slate alone, chances are we will see plenty of big home favorites on the card as Denver, LA Clippers, Boston, and Toronto all host those four road teams I mentioned at the end of the ?Hot? section, with other home sides like Indiana (vs Milwaukee), Cleveland (vs Brooklyn), Minnesota (vs Houston), and Portland (vs Golden State) all having tough matchups as it is, this year could be another rough one to back home teams before the All-Star break.

Now every situation is going to be different ? for example Dallas hosts Miami at the end of a very long road trip for the Heat, which is going to be a tough spot for Miami regardless - and each game will force you to be selective in which games you believe this scenario will fit the best.

But when you can combine these two ?Hot? and ?Not? situations I've outlined into one game ? a home team laying -5 or more ? it might be worth your time to dig deeper into those games and build a case for taking the points with the road underdog.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Warriors (-3, 234) at Blazers ? 10:05 PM EST

The first half comes to a close for Golden State and Portland on Wednesday night as well as the final regular season meeting between these two Western Conference foes. The Warriors (41-15 SU, 24-31-1 ATS) crushed the Blazers (33-23 SU, 30-26 ATS) in the first matchup at Oracle Arena on November 23 as 1 ?-point favorites, 125-97. Portland broke its 13-game skid in Oakland in late December as the Blazers edged the Warriors, 110-109 in overtime as 8 ?-point underdogs.

The Blazers lost to the Warriors two nights later at Moda Center, 115-105 as five-point home underdogs. Damian Lillard led Portland with 40 points on 14-of-23 shooting from the floor, but the Warriors leaned on their terrific trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant, who combined for 82 points. Golden State picked up its first victory at Portland since eliminating the Blazers in the opening round of the 2017 playoffs as Terry Stotts? squad grabbed both meetings at home last season.

Portland returns home following a pair of defeats at Dallas and Oklahoma City on a back-to-back set on Sunday and Monday. The Blazers went ice-cold in the fourth quarter of Sunday?s loss to the Mavericks by scoring only nine points, but Portland couldn?t bounce back the next night. Oklahoma City beat Portland for the third time this season in a 120-111 victory as 4 ?-point favorites. Lillard paced Portland with 31 points, but backcourt mate C.J. McCollum was limited to 13 points on 5-of-20 shooting from the floor.

Golden State heads to the Pacific Northwest with no rest after rallying past Utah on Tuesday, 115-108, but the Warriors failed to cash as nine-point favorites. Curry, Thompson, and Durant posted a total of 74 points, while DeMarcus Cousins struggled from the floor by converting 4-of-17 shots for 12 points. The Warriors have won in six of seven tries on the second of a back-to-back this season, but have covered the spread only twice in this rest situation.

Climb the Mountain

It?s amazing to think that Sacramento can make the playoffs in the tough Western Conference, but the Kings (30-26 SU, 33-23 ATS) are currently the eighth seed heading into Wednesday?s action. Sacramento has already cashed its season win total of 26, while finishing off a six-game homestand with a sterling 5-1 mark. The Kings avenged a road loss at Phoenix by beating the Suns, 117-104 as 9 ?-point favorites on Sunday, led by rookie Marvin Bagley III?s 32 points off the bench.

Sacramento travels to Denver for its third matchup with the Nuggets (38-18 SU, 30-26 ATS) this season. Denver captured the first two meetings, including a 117-113 triumph at Golden 1 Center as 3 ?-point favorites on January 3. The Nuggets erased a 13-point halftime deficit as Jamal Murray led the comeback by scoring 36 points, while Nikola Jokic produced a double-double by posting 26 points and 13 rebounds.

Denver snapped a three-game skid in Monday?s 103-87 blowout of an unrested Miami squad as 8 ?-point favorites. The Nuggets allowed their fewest points since yielding 86 points to the Raptors on December 16, while Jokic and Malik Beasley each pumped in 23 points for Denver. Mike Malone?s team has won 18 consecutive games in the home favorite role, while covering 14 times in this stretch.

Central Command

Regardless of Wednesday?s result, the Bucks (42-14 SU, 33-20-3 ATS) will head into the All-Star break as the leaders of the Central division. Milwaukee improved to 14-0 off a loss this season as the Bucks pulled away from the Bulls on Monday, 112-99 to barely cash as 11 ?-point road favorites. The Bucks have won six consecutive games away from Fiserv Forum, while covering in each of those contests.

Milwaukee heads to Indiana for the third meeting with the Pacers (38-19 SU, 30-27 ATS) as the home team has won each of the first two matchups. Indiana dominated Milwaukee in its last hookup at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in mid-December, 113-97 as 1 ?-point underdogs. The Pacers limited the Bucks to 11-of-43 shooting from three-point range, while holding MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo to 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

The Pacers have caught fire of late by winning six in a row, including all four on their current homestand. Indiana?s defense has clamped down by limiting its last four opponents to 94 points or less, while cashing the UNDER in seven of the past eight games overall. The Pacers have thrived as a home underdog by posting a solid 4-1 SU/ATS mark with the lone loss coming last month to the Warriors in a 32-point setback.

On the Way to 18?

It seems like the Knicks (10-46 SU, 23-32-1 ATS) may not win another game this season. They probably will, but New York is in the midst of a 17-game losing streak, while last winning at Madison Square Garden on December 1 against Milwaukee in overtime. The Knicks haven?t won a home game in regulation since November 23 against New Orleans, while compiling a dreadful 3-13 ATS mark in their last 16 home contests.

The Knicks welcome in the unrested 76ers (36-21 SU, 27-30 ATS), who were tripped up at home by the Celtics last night. Philadelphia seeks the four-game season sweep of New York tonight, as the Sixers slid past the Knicks in their last matchup at MSG in mid-January, 108-105 as seven-point favorites. The 76ers have captured seven straight meetings with the Knicks since Christmas Day of 2017, but Philadelphia owns a 3-7 ATS record in the role of a road favorite this season.

String Two Together

The Rockets (33-23 SU, 26-29-1 ATS) finally broke through against the Mavericks by beating Dallas for the first time in three meetings this season on Monday. Houston travels to Minnesota for a playoff rematch with the Timberwolves (26-30 SU, 28-28 ATS) as the Rockets seek to avenge a 103-91 setback at Target Center in early December as two-point favorites.

Houston cashed as 11-point favorites on Monday, but the Rockets are 0-7 ATS the last seven games off an ATS victory since upsetting Golden State in overtime on January 3. The Rockets have performed better on the road lately by winning four of the past five away from Toyota Center, including three straight wins as a favorite at Sacramento, Phoenix, and New York.

The Wolves snapped a four-game skid by outlasting the Clippers on Monday, 130-120, as Minnesota scored its most points since dropping 132 in a rout of Sacramento in December. Seven Wolves scored in double-figures, led by Karl-Anthony Towns? 24-point performance, while Derrick Rose chipped in 22 points off the bench. Minnesota has won and covered in its last six opportunities in the home underdog role, while limiting Houston to nine points in the fourth quarter in their last matchup two months ago.

T-Wolves overcome Harden's 42 in upset
February 13, 2019
By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Jeff Teague scored 27 points, Karl-Anthony Towns had 25 and the Minnesota Timberwolves overcame James Harden's 42 points to beat the Houston Rockets 121-111 on Wednesday night.

Harden had his 31st consecutive game with 30 or more points, tying Wilt Chamberlain for the second-longest streak in league history. The NBA's leading scorer passed the 30-point mark on his 15th four-point play of the season, getting Josh Okogie in the air with one of his trademark step-back 3s to put Houston up 74-67 midway through the third.

Okogie had 16 points and sparked the Timberwolves to retake the lead with an 18-2 run. The rookie had a breakaway dunk and a 3-pointer to give Minnesota a 77-74 lead, but he brought some of the biggest cheers of the night with an emphatic block on Harden's 3-point attempt with 3:40 to play.

After being stripped by Okogie a few plays earlier, Harden stepped back again behind the arc to attempt the 3. This time, the ball didn't even leave his hand before Okogie leaped forward and stuffed it, bringing the crowd to its feet.

NETS 148, CAVALIERS 139, 3OT

CLEVELAND (AP) - D'Angelo Russell scored 14 of his 36 points in the third overtime and Brooklyn outlasted Cleveland.

DeMarre Carroll's desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer of the second overtime tied the game, and Nets carried the momentum into the third extra session.

Russell, who is headed to play in his first All-Star Game, had two points in the first half and scored Brooklyn's first 11 points in third overtime, including two 3-pointers.

Joe Harris scored 25 points and Carroll had 18 as the Nets improved to 30-29 - above .500 at the All-Star break for the first time since 2012-13.

Jordan Clarkson scored a career-high 42 points for Cleveland. Collin Sexton had 24 points and Marquese Chriss added 23.

TRAIL BLAZERS 129, WARRIORS 107

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard scored 29 points and Portland snapped Golden State's five-game winning streak with a chippy victory that included the late ejection of Warriors coach Steve Kerr.

Jake Layman added 17 points off the bench for the Blazers, who had eight players in double figures. The win snapped a two-game skid.

Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry each had 32 points for the Warriors, who rested DeMarcus Cousins following a victory at home over Utah the night before.

Portland led 110-103 before Golden State's Draymond Green was called for a flagrant foul on Zach Collins with 3:54 left. Kerr reacted angrily, throwing his clipboard to court and yelling at the officials before he was ejected.

RAPTORS 129, WIZARDS 120

TORONTO (AP) - Pascal Siakam scored a career-high 44 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, OG Anunoby scored a career-best 22 points, and Toronto beat Washington for its sixth straight win.

Serge Ibaka had 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Kyle Lowry had 14 points and 13 assists as the Raptors used a big third quarter to overcome a 12-point deficit and post their fifth straight victory over the struggling Wizards. Jeremy Lin played 25 minutes in his Toronto debut after signing earlier in the day. He was recently waived by the Atlanta Hawks.

Toronto won without All-Star Kawhi Leonard, who sat for the second time in four games because of a sore left knee. Leonard also missed last Thursday's win at Atlanta. Coach Nick Nurse said he would't mind if Leonard played in Sunday's All-Star Game in Charlotte.

Bradley Beal scored 28 points, Jeff Green had 23 and Jabari Parker 22 as Washington lost for the fifth time in seven games.

NUGGETS 120, KINGS 118

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic tipped in a basket with less than a second remaining, Isaiah Thomas hit two big 3-pointers in his long-awaited Denver debut and the Nuggets held off Sacramento.

Jokic finished with 20 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists for his 28th career triple-double, and Paul Millsap matched a season high with 25 points as Denver overcame a 17-point first-half deficit.

Down six late, the Kings tied it on Buddy Hield's layup with 15.1 seconds. After a timeout, Jokic went to work down low, missing his first shot attempt before tipping it in. Hield's last-gasp 3-pointer was off the mark at the buzzer.

Thomas proclaimed his surgically repaired hip good to go prior to the game and was anxious to step back onto the court. He received a standing ovation when he entered the game late in the first quarter.

76ERS 126, KNICKS 111

NEW YORK (AP) - Joel Embiid had 26 points, 14 rebounds and one flying leap over an award-winning actress into the crowd, and Philadelphia handed New York its 18th straight loss.

Tobias Harris scored 25 points and Ben Simmons had 18 for the 76ers, who bounced back from their 112-109 home loss to Boston on Tuesday, sending themselves into the All-Star break with a 37-21 record.

Allonzo Trier scored 19 points and fellow rookie Mitchell Robinson had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Knicks (10-46), who remain mired in the longest losing streak during one season in franchise history.

It was during the third that Embiid gave the 76ers and plenty of people sitting courtside a scare when he tried to chase down a ball going to the sideline. He went flying just over the head of actress Regina King, who won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Golden Globes, and crashed into the MSG Network statistician working next to broadcaster Mike Breen. The statistician somehow stayed in the game.

BUCKS 106, PACERS 97

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo started fast and finished strong, picking up a triple-double to help Milwaukee rally late for a victory over Indiana.

The three-time All-Star had 33 points, 19 rebounds and 11 assists, leading the Bucks back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit. NBA-leading Milwaukee has won eight of nine overall and seven straight on the road - its longest road winning streak since 1984-85.

Bojan Bogdanovic scored 20 points and Darren Collison added 14 to lead Indiana, which had a six-game winning streak snapped just before the All-Star break.

HEAT 112, MAVERICKS 101

DALLAS (AP) - Dwyane Wade scored 22 points in what figures to be his final game on the court where he won his first championship, helping Miami beat Dallas.

The 37-year-old who has already said this is his final season was a little better despite one of the stronger games of the season for Dirk Nowitzki, his two-time NBA Finals foe whose record 21st season with the same franchise has the feel of an unofficial farewell tour.

The 40-year-old German finished two points shy of his season high with 12, although most of the highlights in their first meeting of the season came in the first half before the Heat outscored the Mavericks 32-16 in the third quarter and led by as many as 21 points in the fourth.

CELTICS 118, PISTONS 110

BOSTON (AP) - Jayson Tatum scored 19 points and Gordon Hayward finished with 18 to help Boston hold off Detroit.

Hayward added eight assists and five rebounds in his first start since Dec. 21. Al Horford finished with 17 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. Jaylen Brown had 17 points and seven rebounds.

Blake Griffin led Detroit with 32 points and eight rebounds. Andre Drummond added 21 points and 17 rebounds.

BULLS 122, GRIZZLIES 110

CHICAGO (AP) - Otto Porter Jr. scored a career-high 37 points on 16-for-20 shooting, Robin Lopez added season-high 25 points, and Chicago beat Memphis.

Lauri Markkanen added 21 points as Chicago ended a franchise-record 11-game home losing streak with their first win at the United Center since beating Orlando on Dec. 21. The Bulls also won for just the fourth time in 22 games.

Avery Bradley scored 15 points for the Grizzlies, who lost for the second straight night.

CLIPPERS 134, SUNS 107

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Lou Williams scored 30 points, Danilo Gallinari added 20 and Los Angeles routed Phoenix.

It is the second straight game that Williams has scored 30 or more points. He had a season-high 45 in Monday's loss at Minnesota.

Montrezl Harrell scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half, and Ivan Zubac scored 16 for the Clippers.

Armadillo: Thursday's Den: We?re changing things a little, starting today??.

Starting today, we?re starting something different here, something that hopefully you like and hopefully something that won?t drive me crazy.

I?ll post a selection EVERY DAY going forward, whether it be a college game, an NBA game, a futures bet or even an NHL or AAF game. Picks will be posted by noon each day.

Only exceptions will be during the baseball All-Star break, and the short time in October between the end of baseball season and the beginning of the NBA.

Been debating this for several months, but Wednesday, while shoveling snow (oddly enough) I decided that this was the way to go. So if this doesn?t go well, blame my snowplow guy, who for some reason, is on vacation this week.

Wrapping up college hoop games the last two nights??.
13) Duke 71, Louisville 69? Cardinals led by 23 with 9:20 left, then collapsed down stretch, turning ball over nine times from that point on as Duke ratcheted up their pressure.

Chris Mack has some serious psychology work ahead of him the rest of this week.

12) Nets 148, Cavaliers 139, 3OTs? D?Angelo Russell scored 28 of the Nets? 39 points in the OT?s; he had only 8 points in regulation. Kenny Atkinson is doing a great job to have the Nets a 29-29 with two of his best players missing large chunks of the season with injuries.

Jordan Clarkson scored 42 for Cleveland in this game, and he didn?t start.

11) Miami 65, Clemson 64? Hurricanes tore Clemson?s heart out, hitting an off-balance jumper with 0:00.4 left for the unlikely win. Tigers had fought their way into being ?in? projections of the Field of 68, but this bad loss likely drops them back out.

10) Kansas State 71, Texas 64:

Texas coach Shaka Smart to his team during a first half timeout: ?This is a basketball game against a team we?re better than!!!?

Well, maybe not. K-State is 19-5, 9-2 in the league; Texas is 14-11, 6-6 in the league. You tell me which team is better.

Matthew McConaughey was sitting on the end of the Longhorns? bench, which I?m assuming is legal, since its not the first time he?s done it, but since when do boosters sit on the bench during the freakin? game?

9) Western Kentucky basketball coach Rick Stansbury will miss Thursday, Saturday games this week; he is having back surgery Friday. Assistant coach Mark Hsu, who served as interim coach in Stansbury?s place last week, will continue in that role.

8) LSU 73, Kentucky 71? Outstanding game ended on an LSU tip-in at the buzzer, that was really close to being offensive goaltending. Two very good, young teams; this game had a March feel to it.

7) Xavier 64, Creighton 61 OT? Bluejays lose third straight game, two of them in OT. Xavier ends a 6-game losing streak.

6) UCLA 75, California 67, OT? Bruins were down 7 at half, came back and kept Golden Bears winless in Pac-12 play. Last Pac-12 team to go 0-18 in conference was Oregon State 11 years ago, but league was a hell of a lot better then than it is now.

5) St Bonaventure 76, St Joe?s 51?Bonnies won for 4th time in last six games, climb over .500 (6-5) in the A-14- they?ve won their last four road games.

Coach Mark Schmidt has now tied Larry Weise for the most coaching wins in St Bonaventure history, with 202, and he did it on his birthday, which is nice.

4) Ole Miss 60, Auburn 55? Rebels were 13-33 on arc, only 6-18 inside arc, which is weird. Auburn was 5-20 on arc, which is how upsets happen.

3) Quinnipiac 98, Rider 88 OT? Rider just played three games in five nights and lost all three, the first two by 1-2 points, then this; they led this game by 9 with 0:49 left, by 7 with 0:24 left.

2) There was a big NFL trade Wednesday; Ravens traded Joe Flacco to Denver, for what is expected to be a 4th round pick in April?s draft.

Flacco was a Raven for 11 years, winning Super Bowl XLVII; he was 96-67 as a starter, 10-5 in playoff games, so a very productive Raven.

By way of comparison, Eli Manning is 116-114 as a starter, 8-4 in playoff games; I?ve never heard anyone suggest that Flacco is a Hall of Famer, so why would Manning be one?

Ravens-Broncos do not play next season, which is too bad for the NFL?s schedule makers.

1) Then there is Case Keenum, who could be playing for his 4th team in four years in 2019, as he dashes towards the Ryan Fitzpatrick career path.

Game of the Night - Oklahoma City (-4, 237) at New Orleans, 8:05 ET, TNT

All Pelicans fans want from Anthony Davis this Valentine?s Day is for him to show a little heart.

They already know he?s not their long-term Romeo, but since he?s still going to throw on their uniform for the next few months before being shipped out this summer, it would be nice if he supplies an honest effort once he?s out there.

Following a disastrous start in a 118-88 loss to Orlando on Tuesday that saw him shoot 1-for-9 in an impossibly listless effort for someone with his immense skill set, Davis had the nerve to say ?we sucked? in reference to the Pels? performance when discussing it post-game, adding that ?no one was interested in playing.?

Davis finished with three points and six rebounds as the Magic built a 28-point first-quarter lead. The effort was unprofessional, but it was obvious that is all started with the guy who will be representing the franchise at this weekend?s All-Star festivities in Charlotte. Not surprisingly, his apathetic effort had people calling for the NBA to rescind its demand that Davis continue playing for New Orleans if healthy, having cited that ?league rules governing competitive integrity therefore require that he be permitted to play? despite the fact that the Pels would be just fine if he never suited up for them again in order to protect their biggest asset.

After starting off 0-for-6 in the first half, Davis should?ve been embarrassed into showing up for the second half but didn?t do much there either, so it remains to be seen if he can put that performance behind him and chalk it up to an aberration as he takes the court against the Thunder for a game all eyes will be on tonight. If you?re going to take the Pelicans plus the point, you?re counting on him rebounding with some pride to keep this game competitive since his team is actually nearing full strength with Elfrid Payton close to returning from an ankle injury.

New Orleans has lost eight of 11 and has failed to cover in three straight games despite moving only Nikola Mirotic to Milwaukee at the trade deadline, holding on to Davis, Jrue Holiday and Julius Randle despite getting offers for all three. Unless they want to get embarrassed again, Davis and his teammates have to show up with the right mindset against the surging Thunder, which is a league-best 11-1 over their last dozen games, pulling within 1.5 games of Denver for first place in the Northwest Division.

New Orleans native Paul George has emerged as a legitimate MVP candidate since no player, not even James Harden, has been better over the past few weeks. George has topped 30 points in 10 of 12 games during Oklahoma City?s recent surge and is averaging 39.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists in February. He?s shot over 50 percent only once in three encounters with the Pels this season and is averaging only 23.7 points per game against them, but it wouldn?t be surprising to see him close the series with a big night as OKC seeks out its third win in four matchups. He piled up 47 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in Monday?s 120-111 win over Portland and has made at least two 3-pointers in 35 consecutive games.

Russell Westbrook is averaging 20.7 points, 10.0 rebounds and 10.7 assists against New Orleans despite having to deal with a plus defender in Holiday and is riding a streak of 10 consecutive games with a triple-double, setting a new NBA record in surpassing Wilt Chamberlain?s run of nine straight. Despite his tremendous run, Westbrook continues to struggle from the field, coming off a 5-for-19 shooting night against the Blazers. He?s shooting less than 35 percent from the field over his last five and has made just four of 21 3-pointers in February, so he?s got plenty of room for improvement from an efficiency standpoint going forward.

Westbrook might be in for a larger workload if this game remains close since sixth man Dennis Schroder is out tonight due to a new baby in the family. Starting power forward Jerami Grant is likely out with an ankle sprain, so OKC will be working short-handed. Veteran Patrick Patterson will get increased minute up front, while rookie guard Deonte Burton and 13-year-pro Raymond Felton should shore up the backcourt.

The ?under? has prevailed in five of the last seven games involving the Pelicans and in three straight Thunder contests.

Best of the Rest

Charlotte at Orlando (-3, 215.5), 7:05 p.m. ET:
Despite entering this one two games under .500, the Hornets are going to head into the All-Star break atop the Southeast Division regardless of what happens here. The Magic are on a four-game winning streak currently tied for second-best alongside OKC behind only the Raptors, who have won six straight. Their 6-1 run through seven games is the team?s best in years as Orlando has responded well to the front office hanging on to center Nikola Vucevic and sixth man Terrence Ross, both of whom are unrestricted free agents at season?s end.

The Magic are all-in on a playoff push as they try to snap a streak of six straight season without reaching the postseason. Orlando is just two games behind the Hornets for the division lead and just one game behind Detroit and Miami for the eighth and final berth in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte has posted a pair of blowout wins over the Magic this season, winning by 32 points and 25 points respectively. Kemba Walker, the Hornets? All-Star point guard, has averaged 25 points in the wins, but his team will have to overcome fatigue in their fourth road game in nine days and is just 8-20 on the road. The Hornets have beaten the Magic 13 consecutive times, winning 11 under Steve Clifford and then beating their former head coach in their first two matchups of the season. Orlando has seen Vucevic and Ross each excel for weeks and has gotten a significant boost from second-year forward Jonathan Isaac, who averaged 18 points and 3.3 blocks over the team?s last three wins.

The Magic remain without rookie backup center Mo Bamba, while the Hornets are likely to be without Tony Parker, who is having back trouble. Shelvin Mack, recently signed after being let go by Memphis, should get backup minutes against an Orlando team he suited up for last season.

New York at Atlanta (-7, 224), 7:35 p.m. ET:
The Knicks have lost 18 straight games after falling against the 76ers last night and now visit a Hawks team riding high after taking down the Lakers in front of a big crowd at State Farm Arena on Tuesday. New York?s tank job is going as desired since it is sporting the league?s worst record (10-47) in the race to win the lottery and the rights to select between Duke star freshmen Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett. Atlanta has lost two of three against the Knicks this season, finally getting on the board in the most recent meeting back on Dec. 21.

New York won?t have to deal with old friend Jeremy Lin, who was waived earlier this week and debuted with Toronto last night, so expect them to see more of rookie guard Trae Young, who led the way in the upset of L.A. with 22 points and 14 assists. He?ll be matched up against Dennis Smith, Jr., who has led the Knicks in scoring (16.6 ppg) since arriving from Dallas in a deal that shipped out Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway, Jr., Trey Burke and Courtney Lee while also landing center DeAndre Jordan to serve as a mentor for rookie 7-footer Mitchell Robinson. Atlanta list rookie wing Kevin Huerter as probable with an ankle injury, while New York is still without guards Emmanuel Mudiay and Frank Ntilikina, creating more opportunities for rookie free-agent pickup Kadeem Allen, who has averaged 17.3 points over his last three outings. The ?over? is on an 11-5 run in Hawks games and has connected in three of the last four Knicks? contests. The high-side went 10-1 in Wednesday?s NBA action.

Pels upset OKC, Davis leaves injured
February 14, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Julius Randle capped a 33-point, 11-rebound performance with three clutch baskets in the final minutes, and the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 131-122 on Thursday night despite losing All-Star Anthony Davis to a shoulder injury after the first half.

Davis was in the game when the first half ended, but kept his left arm still as he walked to the locker room shortly after fouling Nerlens Noel on an attempted shot block with his left hand in the final second of the second quarter. When the second half began, the Pelicans announced that Davis was out of the remainder of the game with a left shoulder injury, putting his availability for this weekend's All-Star Game in doubt.

Russell Westbrook increased his record triple-double streak to 11 games with 44 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. But he missed a late 3-point attempt when the Thunder trailed by five just inside the final minute of the game. New Orleans rebounded and held on from there.

Jrue Holiday had 32 points and seven assists, none more timely than his driving feed to Randle in the paint with 1:30 to go.

KNICKS 106, HAWKS 91

ATLANTA (AP) - Dennis Smith Jr. scored 19 points and New York snapped a franchise-worst, 18-game losing streak with a victory over Atlanta.

The Knicks ended their longest skid within a single season with their first victory since Jan. 4 at the Los Angeles Lakers. New York, with the Eastern Conference's worst record and second-worst overall, had dropped 26 of 27.

Kadeem Allen and John Jenkins each added 14 points. Damyean Dotson finished with 13 points and DeAndre Jordan had 13 rebounds for New York, which never trailed and only was tied twice, in the second quarter.

MAGIC 127, HORNETS 89

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Orlando ended a 13-game losing streak to Charlotte behind 21 points from reserve Terrence Ross.

The Magic have won five straight for the first time in more than three years. Nikola Vucevic had his fifth straight double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Aaron Gordon added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jonathan Isaac scored 16 points.

The Magic led 71-36 at halftime, their biggest lead in any game this season. Guard D.J. Augustin drilled a 3-pointer on the first possession of the second half and the Hornets never got closer than 29 points after halftime.

Malik Monk scored 15 points, Jeremy Lamb had 14 and Cody Zeller added 13 for the Hornets.
