Sunday?s 6-pack

Some trends to consider when filling out your brackets:

? Six of last nine Final Fours had only one #1 seed in it.

? That said, last four national games had six #1 seeds, a 2-seed and a 3-seed.

? Last time a #4-seed made the Final Four; 2013.

? Five of last six years, a team seeded #7 or worse made the Final Four.

? Since 2002, #2-seeds are 64-4 SU in first round; last six years, #3-seeds are 19-5.

? Last two years, Big East teams are only 7-6 in the first round.

Quote of the Day
?We are pleased to welcome Johnny Manziel to Alliance of American Football, which we?ve always described as a league of opportunity for talented players to launch or revitalize their pro football careers. We completed extensive background work to determine whether it would be appropriate for Johnny to play this season, and after consulting with many people familiar with his situation, we concluded that it would be good for him to resume his pro football career here at The Alliance.?
AAF Head of Football Bill Polian

Sunday?s quiz
Which two teams played a 6-overtime game in the 2009 Big East tournament?

Saturday?s quiz
Cal-Santa Barbara?s teams are known as the Gauchos.

Friday?s quiz
Toronto Blue Jays have spring training in Dunedin, FL.

*************************

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) I?m watching the Seton Hall-Marquette game Friday night, and it dawned on me; half the league has to travel halfway cross the country for the conference tournament every year, while the other half of the league? Their fans can drive or take the train to Madison Square Garden.

This is the sixth year of the ?new? Big East; during that time, the midwestern part of the league is 8-19 SU against the eastern part in the conference tournament.

Creighton lost in finals of the tournament twice, Xavier once, but no midwestern team has won it, and this year is no different. Something to think about going forward.

12) Houston 61, Memphis 58? This is going to be the last year in the foreseeable future where Memphis won?t go to the NCAA?s; Penny Hardaway did a good job in his first season, and he is crushing it on the recruiting trail. Memphis has a lot of high school talent.

11) Tennessee 82, Kentucky 78? This is Wildcats? first loss in SEC tourney since a 61-60 loss to Florida in the finals of the 2014 tournament. Tennessee plays Sunday for its first tournament title since 1979.

Both of these teams are really good and either could win the NCAA title.

Sometimes it is better to lose in the semi-final of the tourneys that play their final on Sunday; one thing you do NOT want is to play on Sunday, then draw a Thursday game in the NCAA?s, especially if it is Thursday afternoon? not lot of prep time.

10) Michigan 76, Minnesota 49? Wolverines got swept by rival Michigan State this season; now the teams meet a third time, for the Big 14 title.

9) Utah State 64, San Diego State 57? You could make a legit argument for Chris Smith to be national Coach of the Year. Last three years, Aggies were 22-32 in Big West games; this year, in his first season in Logan, Utah State is 27-6, 18-3 in conference.

8) Iowa State 78, Kansas 66? Cyclones won Big X tournament for 4th time in last six years; this year, they came into the tournament on a 2-6 skid, but they seem to like Kansas City.

7) Villanova 74, Seton Hall 72? Wildcats win Big East tournament for fourth time in last five years. For the season, 54% of Villanova?s shots were 3-pointers; thats unusual for a good team.

6) Oregon 68, Washington 48? Huskies laid an egg here; they scored two points in first 9:30 of second half. Washington is 5-4 in its last nine games, after starting season 19-4.

5) Chargers signed QB Tyrod Taylor this week, an excellent signing by a team in desperate need of a backup for aging Philip Rivers, who will be 38 in December. Last year?s Chargers? backup QB?s were Geno Smith and Cardale Jones; Taylor is a huge upgrade from those two.

4) Cleveland Browns? QB Baker Mayfield took batting practice and then coached first base for the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday. Apparently Mayfield is buddies with Christian Yelich; he hit a foul ball into the stands that broke a woman?s watch.

3) Pittsburgh Pirates honored TV analyst Steve Blass this weekend in Florida, naming the press box in Bradenton after him. Blass has been on TV for the Pirates for the last 34 years- he also pitched for the Pirates for a decade, helping them win the 1971 World Series.

in 2009, Blass recorded two hole-in-ones in the same round of golf, a pretty cool feat.

2) During that same game, Pirates? TV guys were insisting that Starling Marte has as much talent as Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, an interesting claim.

1) Way back in 1963, the San Francisco Giants had three Alou brothers on their team: Matty, Felipe and Jesus. All three could hit;
? Matty wound up with a .307 career batting average over 15 years,
? Felipe wound up being a manager, winning more games than he lost over 14 years.
? Jesus hit .280 in 15 major league seasons, winning two World Series rings with the A?s.

This year, Vermont has three brothers on its team this year; the Duncans- Ernie, Robin and Everett. Never heard of three brothers on the same basketball team before. Now they?re all going to March Madness together, which is pretty cool.

Game of the Night - Brooklyn at L.A. Clippers (-6, 232), 9:05 ET, Prime Ticket

A pair of Eastern Conference powers square off in the afternoon, but since we?re seeking out a ?Game of the Night? here, the lone matchup featuring teams that should both make the playoffs will have to suffice.

There are notes on 76ers-Bucks below, but we?ve got you owls covered on Nets-Clips, which pits teams looking at undesirable playoff matchups at the moment. Considering neither was expected to make the postseason back in October, its not so bad that they?re currently slated to open on the road against the Raptors and Warriors. It?s also not ideal and potentially preventable.

Brooklyn is currently only ahead Southeast Division-leading Miami among likely playoff teams, but will be vying with Detroit for the No. 6 seed and has a difficult schedule to navigate considering this is the third of a seven-game road trip that opened with double-digit losses to the Thunder and Jazz and continues with games against the Kings, Lakers and Trail Blazers after this one before finishing up in Philadelphia. It has just four home games left. All will come against teams currently expected to make the playoffs.

The Nets will need to pull off a few upsets if they?re going to finish above .500 for the first time since 2013-14. It?s unlikely that two Southeast teams will be able to play well enough to surpass their record and prevent them from ending a playoff drought that dates back to ?15, but that possibility does exist given their grueling remaining slate.

The Clippers have pulled away from Sacramento in the race for the West?s No. 8 seed and will reach the playoffs unless they collapse and lose 10 of their final 12 while the Kings win 75 percent of their remaining games. Mathematically, it?s possible, but highly unlikely.

Doc Rivers? team will almost certainly be playing on in mid-April and would love to open anywhere but Oakland, so they?ll have to catch one of the teams in front of them unless Golden State falls behind Denver again in the race for the top seed. L.A. is 9-3 over its last 12 games as it heads into its final dozen contests, so another stretch of success like the one it is currently enjoying could result in potentially landing homecourt advantage for the first round since it has pulled just 2.5 games behind the Trail Blazers, who currently hold residence in that spot. Portland is anxiously anticipating hearing what guard C.J. McCollum?s MRI results say about the knee injury he suffered in the third quarter of Saturday night?s costly loss in San Antonio.

A win tonight would guarantee a .500 record for the Clippers, who have surprised since seemingly giving up their pursuit of a postseason appearance when they traded Tobias Harris to Philadelphia in January in order to open up a second max-salary slot for this summer while adding multiple first-round picks and impressive rookie shooter Landry Shamet. L.A. is 10-5 since the deal.

The Clippers have won seven of their last eight games in a favorite?s role (5-2-1 ATS) and come off a 128-121 win over the Bulls on Friday night that saw them fall victim to a backdoor cover. They struggled some but ultimately pulled away despite a big night from Chicago?s Zach LaVine. L.A. got big nights from small forward Danilo Gallinari and big man Montrezl Harrell. Lou Williams became the NBA?s all-time leading scorer off the bench earlier this week and is also in excellent form, while defensive standout Patrick Beverley continues to set the tone by doing all the little things on offense while attempting to make life miserable for whoever he?s assigned to guard.

The Nets sat Allen Crabbe in Saturday night?s blowout loss in Utah due to a knee issue and don?t have backup guard Shabazz Napier available due to a hamstring strain. It remains to be seen if either participates. The Jazz clamped down and dominated the paint in a 114-98 loss, their second straight double-digit loss on this trip following Wednesday?s 12-point loss in Oklahoma City.

L.A. won the first meeting with the Nets in Brooklyn 127-119 on Nov. 17, getting 28 points from Gallinari to rally from a 15-point deficit. Center Jarrett Allen led Brooklyn with a career-high 24 points in addition to 11 rebounds, but he?s gotten off to a rough start against Steven Adams and Rudy Gobert, wrestling with foul trouble while averaging just six points and five boards in 25.5 minutes. He?s got a more favorable matchup here at the onset against L.A.?s Ivica Zubac and will need to get off to a strong start to help Brooklyn attempt to rebound. The Nets are 3-9 on the second night of a back-to-back this season, covering only twice. They?ve had a number of no-shows and weren?t exactly competitive in Salt Lake City, shooting just under 35 percent while being outrebounded 65-44. Brooklyn is just 1-12 when held 100 points.

The Nets haven?t beaten the Clippers at Staples center since 2010. They?ll be back in the building to face the Lakers on Friday night. The ?under? has prevailed in seven consecutive games involving Brooklyn.

Best of the Rest

Charlotte at Miami, 1:05 p.m. ET:
The Heat open Sunday's action a-game up on the Magic and these Hornets, so taking care of business at home is essential. We'll see if they can get an assist from Saturday night in South Florida since the Hornets came into town after beating the Wizards in D.C. on Friday. They should be fresh given time off earlier this week but were held to just 84 points the last time they saw Miami back on March 6.

Philadelphia at Milwaukee, 3:35 p.m. ET, ABC:
The 76ers saw all five of their starters score in double-figures last time out, which is especially important since there haven't been many games where they've been able to put Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Jimmy Butler, Tobias Harris and J.J. Redick in the lineup. The Bucks rallied from 20 points down at the break and wound up crushing the Heat by 15 points, but the win proved costly since guard Malcolm Brogdon suffered a torn plantar fascia and will miss at least six weeks, likely keeping him out of at least the frist round of the playoffs. These teams played way back on Oct. 24 at Fiserv Forum. Milwaukee posted a dominant 123-108 win despite 30 points and 19 rebounds from Joel Embiid as Giannis Antetokounmpo put together a 32-point, 18-rebound, 10-assist performance.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Odds to win the national championship (odds via Bets Online):

+$225? Duke

+$600? Gonzaga

+$800? Virginia

+$1000? Michigan

+$1200? Kentucky, Michigan State, North Carolina

+$1400? Tennessee

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Quick thoughts on the field of 68??

13) If you look at the last 13 national champs, those teams went 12-1 against the spread in their first round tournament game. Only exception was Kentucky in 2012, who won 81-66 (-26). UConn won its first round game in OT in 2014, but covered 89-81 (-5).

12) Bobby Hurley coached Buffalo for two years (42-20), then bolted western NY for Arizona State; his Sun Devils have to beat St John?s in Dayton, and if they do, Hurley and Buffalo will be re-united Friday in Tulsa. Buffalo spanked ASU?s rival Arizona by 21 in first round last year.

Since replacing Hurley, Nate Oats is 95-42 in four years at Buffalo, but before the Bulls get to play Arizona State, the Sun Devils still have to beat St John?s.

11) Richard Pitino?s Minnesota Gophers playing Louisville, the school that ran his father out of town two years ago, is classic sidebar material. Rick Pitino won the national title with Louisville six short years ago. Lot of stuff has happened since then.

Rick Pitino is coaching pro ball in Greece now; UCLA, UNLV have jobs open, which lends itself to speculation, but for now Richard?s Gophers vs Louisville is the main event.

10) Tennessee Volunteers are a #2-seed in the South Region, but they can?t be very happy about the prospects of a second round game against Cincinnati???in Columbus, OHIO.

9) Montana-Michigan play in the first round for the second year in a row; I?m thinking that could?ve been avoided.

8) Clemson, NC State and Texas are the highest-rated teams that didn?t get in the NCAA?s; Lipscomb, Furman and NC-Greensboro also have to be pretty disappointed.

7) No team has ever lost its first conference tournament game, and then gone on to win the national championship. Texas Tech, LSU, Purdue, Maryland fall into that category.

6) Virginia Tech?s star PG Justin Robinson missed the last 12 games with a foot injury, but he?ll be back for the NCAA tournament. Hokies play Saint Louis in the first round Friday.

5) If you care about such things, over the last five years, the underdog is 12-8 vs spread in first round 4-13 games. Over last six years, underdogs are 14-10 vs spread in 3-14 games.

4) Last four years, the 11-seed is 7-5 SU in the first round against the 6-seed; the 11-seed was the underdog in all seven of their wins.

3) Over the last 23 years, in the West Region final, the underdog is 17-6 against the spread. During that time, when the #1-seed in the West got to the regional final, they?re 4-8 SU in that regional final.

2) Over the last 16 years, in the Midwest Region final, the underdog is 12-4 against the spread. #1-seeds have fared better in this regional final, going 10-7 SU in their last 17 tries.

1) My pick for the national title? I?ll take Virginia.

Monday's Essentials
Tony Mejia

Game of the Night - Golden State (-3, 224) at San Antonio, 8:05 ET, ESPN

Considering how poorly the Rodeo road trip went ? the Spurs went 1-7 in their worst showing on what is annually their longest trek ? Gregg Popovich and his team were written off for the 642,574th time over the past decade. This time, it figured to stick.

Kawhi Leonard is in Toronto with Danny Green. Tony Parker is producing in Charlotte. Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili have retired.

San Antonio looked done after getting swept by the Knicks and Nets by double-digits three weeks ago. It had dropped its first three games coming out of the All-Star break and were overwhelmed in New York as a 9-point favorite and 1.5-point underdog. Even on the second night of a back-to-back, catching points in Brooklyn isn?t something typically associated with Western Conference powers. The Spurs were officially done.

So, naturally, they got back home after losing to the Nets and beat the Pistons. San Antonio then took out the Thunder and Nuggets. It hasn?t lost since that Feb. 25 setback in Brooklyn. The Spurs put an eight-game winning streak, currently the longest in the NBA, on the line against Golden State. You?re not going to read that this is a potential conference finals preview. In that sense, Pop?s team continues to be overlooked as a true contender, but it?s hard to dismiss what we?ve seen from them in making it to this point in March as the only team not to taste a loss this month.

The Spurs have defeated the Bucks and Trail Blazers at home on this run in addition to getting revenge on the Knicks, so they?ve actually won 10 straight at AT&T Center. San Antonio?s last loss in its building came on Jan. 20 against the Clippers. The Spurs are 8-1 at home as a pick?em or underdog this season, winning seven straight games in that role. That?s important to know because the Warriors are going to be favored here, getting forward Kevin Durant back from a two-game absence after spraining an ankle. Golden State went out and beat the Rockets and Thunder, arguably the top threats to their Western Conference supremacy, on the road without him.

Improved defense has been the reason both of these teams have persevered of late. San Antonio has led the NBA in scoring defense during its eight-game surge, giving up 99.8 points per 100 possessions. Golden State clamped down and held the Rockets to 104 points, Houston?s second-lowest output since February began, before visiting Oklahoma City on Saturday night and surrendering just 88 points, the fewest the Thunder have managed since Feb. 8, 2018.

After losing at home to the Suns as a 17-point favorite in a game memorable due to cameras catching Steve Kerr commenting on how tired he is of Draymond Green?s schtick -- or something like that ? Golden State has turned things around, killing the narrative that it might indeed be vulnerable. That they?ve done it with Durant watching is even more impressive, since he was not the issue with their inconsistency. The Warriors are just fine, and when they want to defend, they?re virtually unbeatable.

The Spurs have been solid with first-year starting point guard Derrick White in the mix since he?s turned into a standout defender, filling the role that Dejounte Murray was supposed to play before he tore his ACL in the preseason. White missed all but two games on the Spurs? ill-fated roadie with a heel injury but has since returned to play every game on their current run, averaging 13 points and nearly six assists while shooting over 52 percent from the field and close to 37 percent from 3-point range. Popovich has made no secret of his importance and anyone who watches the Spurs regularly can attest to the impact he has on the team with his pace and defense.

He?s played just 18 minutes off the bench against Golden State this season, participating in the 104-92 home win back on Nov. 18 that featured neither Stephen Curry, Green or DeMarcus Cousins, so we?ll really only be able to gage his impact in helping defend Curry and Klay Thompson tonight. White?s foot issues kept him out against the Warriors in the lone meeting in Oakland, a 141-102 loss on Feb. 6 you can flush down the toilet since LaMarcus Aldridge, DeMar DeRozan and White all sat out.

It?s still possible that this winds up being the 1-8 matchup in the West, so it will be interesting to see how Popovich attacks this game, particularly since his team is playing their best basketball of the season and Durant is returning to make the Warriors whole. San Antonio is 12 games over .500 for the first time this season and showcased its depth as seven players scored in double-figures in Saturday?s night win over Portland. Despite Denver carrying a three-game winning streak into tonight?s visit to Boston, Golden State owns a one-game lead in the conference. The Spurs are currently sixth, a half-game up on the Jazz and Clippers and just 1.5 games behind the Blazers for fourth. They trail the Rockets in the Southwest Division by just three games with 12 to go and will visit Houston on Friday night, making this a massive week.

We?ll see if they can take advantage of Durant potentially needing to knock off a little rust in order to pull off another surprise here, but it?s surely getting expensive to continue fading the Spurs if that?s what you?ve been doing since the Rodeo road trip. San Antonio has covered in seven of eight. The ?under? has prevailed in eight of nine involving the Spurs and nine of 10 games featuring Golden State, including each of the last seven.

Best of the Rest

Utah at Washington, 7:05 p.m. ET:
The Wizards are running out of time to salvage what has thus far been an ill-fated season, coming into the week 3.5 games behind Miami for the Southeast Division lead and the East's final playoff berth. Bradley Beal has been on a tear and has scored 40 points in consecutive games, shooting 16-for-25 from 3-point range, so the Wizards can hop on his back again to try and take down a Jazz team opening a four-game Eastern road swing that will also see them visit the Knicks, Hawks and Bulls. Utah is looking to surge into the West's top four by taking care of business on a trip in which they'll be favored in every game.

Denver at Boston, 7:35 p.m. ET:
Nikola Jokic got thrown out of the Nuggets' 102-100 Saturday night win over the Pacers and has now been tossed by Tony Brothers all three times he's been ejected from an NBA game. Fortunately for Jokic, Brothers won't be on this game as Denver opens a four-game road trip against the Celtics. Denver will play six of its next seven away from home against a very challenging schedule that features only one non-playoff team, so we'll see what its made of over the next few weeks as it looks to hold on to the Northwest Division lead it has enjoyed for months. Al Horford is expected to play through knee soreness for Boston, but Gordon Hayward is considered doubtful with a neck issue.

Miami at Oklahoma City, 8:05 p.m. ET:
The Heat locked in defensively and held Charlotte to just 75 points on Sunday afternoon, marking the second time in three games that they've held an opponent in the 70s. It was even more impressive that they held it down without Justise Winslow, who is dealing with a thigh injury that may keep him out again here. Miami catches a huge break not having to deal with Russell Westbrook, who is suspended for amassing 16 technical fouls this season after picking up the penalty-clinching T in Saturday's loss to the Warriors. The Heat are plenty familiar with Paul George and Dennis Schroder, whose roles as catalysts will now be heightened in Westbrook's absence.

Indiana at Portland, 10:35 p.m. ET:
The Blazers got encouraging news regarding CJ McCollum's knee injury suffered late Saturday night since it's not expected to be season-ending, but they'll need to make due without him and will be relying on Rodney Hood to help fill in. The Pacers know all about replacing a standout shooting guard since Victor Oladipo is rehabbing away from the team in South Florida after his own knee injury. Wes Matthews has done a nice job filling in defensively but is nowhere near the same type of threat on the offensive end, requiring Bojan Bogdanovic to be more aggressive in looking to score. The Pacers opened a tough four-game road trip with a 102-100 loss in Denver and are just one game up on the Celtics for the No. 4 spot in the East in what's looking increasingly likely to be a first-round matchup come postseason.

Nuggets clinch playoff spot with win over Celtics
March 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Nikola Jokic had 21 points and 13 rebounds and the Denver Nuggets rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Boston Celtics 114-105 on Monday night.

Will Barton added 20 points for the Nuggets, who clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2012-13. They have won four straight.

Kyrie Irving led the Celtics with 30 points. Al Horford finished with 20 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Both teams came into the night trying to improve their playoff position.

The Nuggets tipped off their four-game road trip just a game behind Western Conference-leading Golden State in the standings. The Celtics came in fifth in the East, a game back of fourth-place Indiana and two behind Philadelphia, whom they visit on Wednesday.

PELICANS 129, MAVERICKS 125, OT

DALLAS (AP) - Dirk Nowitzki passed Wilt Chamberlain for sixth place on the NBA's career scoring list, but Elfrid Payton had his fifth straight triple-double to help New Orleans beat Dallas.

Payton finished with 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. Dallas rookie Luka Doncic had a triple-double of his own with 29 points, 13 boards and 10 assists.

Julius Randle scored 11 of his 30 points in the final 3:29 of regulation, helping the Pelicans rally to force overtime.

Nowitzki moved past Chamberlain (31,419 points) on one of his signature long-range jumpers with 8:35 remaining in the first quarter. The 40-year-old German took a feed from Doncic and backed down Kenrich Williams before turning and launching from the top of the key.

Entering the game needing four points to pass Chamberlain, Nowitzki started for the ninth time this season. He made his first two shots to end the suspense with a sellout crowd on its feet.

SPURS 111, WARRIORS 105

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan had 26 points and nine rebounds, LaMarcus Aldridge added 23 points and 13 rebounds and San Antonio beat Golden State for its ninth straight win.

San Antonio won its 11th straight at home and moved into fifth in the Western Conference at 42-29 following Oklahoma City's loss to Miami.

Stephen Curry had 25 points after a slow start and Kevin Durant added 24 for Golden State, which entered the game having won two straight. The Warriors have dropped into a tie with Denver for first place in the West with matching 47-22 records.

There were nine ties in the intense matchup between the West's best and the league's hottest team.

The Warriors had to rally in the second half after a sluggish start.

Curry and Klay Thompson opened the game a combined 0 for 11, but the Warriors' defense allowed them to tie the game at 25 when Curry threw in a 61-footer to close the first quarter.

Thompson finished with 14 points.

JAZZ 116, WIZARDS 95

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rudy Gobert had 14 points and 14 rebounds, Donovan Mitchell scored 19 and Utah won its fourth straight by beating Washington.

Gobert, the reigning Western Conference Player of the Week, was perfect from the field (6 of 6) for Utah, which started the night seventh in the West, one-half game behind San Antonio.

Jae Crowder had 18 points while Joe Ingles had 16 points as the Jazz began a four-game trip by defeating Washington for the sixth straight time. Kyle Korver added 10 points off the bench, and Ricky Rubio had eight points and 10 assists.

Jabari Parker led Washington with 19 points and Bradley Beal added 15 on just 4-of-12 shooting as the Wizards wrapped up a five-game homestand at 3-2. Beal had scored 40 points in each of the previous two games.

HEAT 116, THUNDER 107

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Goran Dragic had 26 points and 11 assists, Dwyane Wade added 25 points and Miami took advantage of Russell Westbrook's absence to beat Oklahoma City.

Kelly Olynyk added 18 points and nine rebounds for Miami, which entered the game in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. The Heat snapped a six-game losing streak against Oklahoma City, which has lost nine of its past 13 games to fall to sixth in the Western Conference.

Paul George scored 31 points with nine rebounds and Jerami Grant had 27 points and 10 rebounds for Oklahoma City. Dennis Schroder, who started in Westbrook's place, scored 20 points. Steven Adams had 10 points and 12 rebounds but was limited by foul trouble to 25 minutes.

RAPTORS 128, KNICKS 92

TORONTO (AP) - Jeremy Lin scored 20 points, Fred VanVleet had 13 points and 12 assists, and Toronto beat New York.

The victory came at a cost to the Raptors, who saw guard Kyle Lowry leave in the third quarter after suffering an injured right ankle. Lowry, who had 15 points and eight assists in 26 minutes, was back in the lineup after missing the previous two games because of a sore left ankle.

New York rookie center Mitchell Robinson collided with Lowry while chasing a loose ball at 5:15 of the third, falling onto Lowry's legs and taking the All-Star point guard down from behind. Lowry slapped the floor in pain and frustration before being helped to his feet and limping to the locker room.

Marc Gasol had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Pascal Siakam scored 19 points and OG Anonoby had 14 as Toronto reached 50 wins for the fourth straight season.

Allonzo Trier scored 22 points and Kevin Knox had 12 for the Knicks.

CAVALIERS 126, PISTONS 119

CLEVELAND (AP) - Collin Sexton scored 27 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with just under two minutes to play, and Cleveland defeated Detroit.

Both teams were missing star players. Blake Griffin (rest) sat out for Detroit, while Kevin Love was out with a sore back for Cleveland after taking a hard fall in Saturday's loss to Dallas.

Andre Drummond nearly made up for Griffin's absence with 21 points and 21 rebounds, but the Cavaliers hit clutch shots down the stretch against a Pistons team that is fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Sexton's 3-pointer gave Cleveland a 115-114 lead with 1:54 left. Following a missed shot, Cedi Osman hit another 3 with 1:24 to play, putting the Cavaliers up 118-114.

BULLS 116, SUNS 101

PHOENIX (AP) - Robin Lopez scored 24 points to help Chicago beat Phoenix and snap a five-game losing streak.

Zach LaVine had 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, and Lauri Markkanen added 17 points and nine boards for Chicago. Lopez shot 11 for 14 from the field as the Bulls were 52 percent (46 for 89).

Deandre Ayton had 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Devin Booker also scored 25 for Phoenix, which has lost three of four after a 5-2 stretch.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Odds to win the Valspar Championship golf tournament this week:

11-2- Dustin Johnson

10-1? Jason Day, Jon Rahm

16-1? Sergio Garcia

20-1? Paul Casey, Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson

25-1? Gary Woodland

33-1? Jim Furyk, Keegan Bradley, Lucas Glover

Tweet of the Day
?Really and truly, very honestly, it?s not my responsibility to tell you guys what I?m doing.??
NJ Giants? GM Dave Gettleman, ingratiating himself to the NY/NJ media

Tuesday?s quiz
Which NHL team has the longest active streak of consecutive years in the playoffs?

Monday?s quiz
2011 VCU Rams made the Final Four after playing a play-in game in Dayton just to get into the final 64 teams.

Sunday?s quiz
Syracuse/UConn played a 6-overtime game in the 2009 Big East tournament.

**********************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Zion Williamson sat out three weeks with a knee injury, then came back over the weekend and played three games in three nights, playing 35-36-40 minutes; how is that smart? The games weren?t critical to Duke?s season; if Williamson had gotten hurt again, then what?

12) Meanwhile, Arkansas big man Daniel Gafford is bolting to the NBA after this, his sophomore season, and won?t play in the Razorbacks? NIT game(s), because he could get hurt.

Williamson plays 35-36-40 minutes on consecutive nights in a mostly meaningless ACC tournament, but this kid won?t play in an NIT game? Oy.

11) San Francisco Dons were shunned by the NIT, then turned down both the CBI and CIT. Likewise for Texas-San Antonio and Jacksonville State.

10) Since 1985, 41 teams with a losing conference record have gotten an at-large bid to the NCAA?s; those teams went 20-21 in the first round, then 6-14 in the round of 32.

Teams in this tournament who were under .500 in conference:
St John?s, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Ohio State

9) Same day the Memphis Express signed Johnny Manziel, they lost QB Zach Mettenberger with an ankle injury, so Manziel is likely to play for Memphis this week.

8) 76-year old Jim Calhoun coached a D-III team in Connecticut this season; the coach was not only new, the team was- it was a men?s team in a school that previously had been an all-female school.

St Joseph?s Bluejays went 16-12 this season, losing in finals of their conference tournament.

7) Coaching carousel:
? Tulane fired coach Mike Dunleavy Sr
? Ohio U hired alum Jeff Boals as its new coach; Boals went 55-41 at Stony Brook, 31-17 in America East games.

6) When the NFL Draft rolls around next month, Giants and Eagles will both make three picks before Dallas picks anyone; the Redskins will pick twice before the Cowboys pick once.

5) Miami Dolphins signed Ryan Fitzpatrick Sunday; he was the 14th QB selected in the 2005 NFL Draft, and is going to become the first QB EVER to throw a pass for eight different NFL teams.

Considering he went to college at Harvard, thats a pretty amazing career, playing 16 years in the NFL, when you didn?t even get a college football scholarship.

4) It turns out that lions are excellent nappers. They hunt mostly at night, and digesting large amounts of meat protein involves effort, so lions often spend as many as 20 hours a day resting.

We?re talking about real-life lions, not Detroit Lions or Nittany Lions.

3) USC is raising its tuition 3.2% next year, up to $57,256 a year; not sure this week was the best time to announce that, after the scandal that broke last week about rich people making payoffs to get their under-qualified kids into these expensive schools, but thats what happened.

2) ACC Network starts up in August, and DirecTV is gong to carry it, which makes me wonder why the hell they don?t carry the Pac-12 Network?

1) Rumor mill has Nebraska firing basketball coach Tim Miles as soon as the Cornhuskers get KO?d from the NIT; Fred Hoiberg is listed as the #1 contender to be the new coach.
