GAME RECAP

ARGOS TOP ALS WITH LAST-MINUTE TOUCHDOWN

TORONTO ? James Franklin threw for 277 yards and ran for two touchdowns as the Toronto Argonauts snapped a seven-game losing streak in a 26-22 win over the Alouettes on Saturday. In the process of ending their two-month skid, the Argos prolonged the Als slump to five games on a back-and-forth afternoon where the winning touchdown came in the final minute.

In a battle of 3-9 teams that will not participate in this fall?s post-season, the Argos proved to have that extra ounce of mettle to rally them to a much-needed victory.

Toronto took early advantage of their chance to face the Als defence, which has allowed a league-worst 31.6 points per game this season. The Argos? first offensive drive featured an electrifying 69-yard connection between Franklin and Armanti Edwards over the middle of the field. After a pass interference penalty brought the Argos right to the goal line, Franklin sidestepped into the end zone for an early 7-0 lead.

But Manziel stepped up on the following drive, hacking away at the Argos? defence with precision passing and a 22-yard scramble to set up a 24-yard field goal for Boris Bede to cut into Toronto?s lead. The Als couldn?t get any closer on the scoreboard in the first quarter, but as time ran out, William Stanback burst free for a 72-yard run that set up a 37-yard field goal from Bede early in the second quarter to cut Toronto?s lead to 7-6.

The Argos countered with a 45-yard drive capped off with a 37-yard field goal of their own by kicker Drew Brown to give the home side a four-point lead. Despite another formidable drive by Montreal to battle back, the Argos came up with a big second-down sack on Manziel, then got some luck when Bede sent a field goal attempt wide left to keep Toronto in front 10-7.

Following an Argos punt, Stefan Logan managed a 30-yard punt return to set up Montreal, but once again the Als were kept out of the end zone, this time by a Marcus Roberson Jr. interception as time waned down on the half. But Montreal?s defence forced a quick two-and-out and Manziel finally broke through with five straight completions to feed Eugene Lewis an 11-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds left to give the visitors a 14-10 lead at halftime.

The Argos put together a long, productive drive to start off the second half, as Franklin took the offence from their own 28 yard line to the Als? four, but Toronto had to settle for a short field goal which trimmed Montreal?s lead to 14-13. The Argos defence forced a quick punt, but the Als one-upped the Argos? defence by forcing a first-down pick-six by Tevaughn Campbell to give Montreal a 21-13 lead.

The Argos answered back with three points on the next drive, then Brown eventually converted a fourth straight field goal r to cut Montreal?s lead to 21-19 with under seven minutes remaining in the game. To help the Argos? rally, Bede missed his second field goal of the afternoon to give Toronto a fighting chance shortly after the three-minute warning.

Running their two-minute drill, the Argos kept fans on their toes with an entertaining final stand. Branden Burks busted through the Als? line for a crucial 12-yard gain on a third down, and Edwards caught a trio of passes to advance the Argos? drive. Some help from an Als? pass interference penalty in the end zone placed the Argos on the one-yard line inside the final minute. Franklin made sure he finished the job with a go-ahead one-yard sneak into the end zone that tied Doug Flutie in all-time CFL rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

The two sides showed they will have plenty to play for in the rematch next Sunday in Montreal.

GAME RECAP

RIDERS DOWN STAMPS TO STAY IN HUNT FOR FIRST IN WEST

CALGARY ? The Saskatchewan Roughriders improved their record to 11-6 with a 29-24 road win against the division-leading Calgary Stampeders on Saturday night, keeping the team in the mix for first in the West Division.

Quarterback Zach Collaros looked sharp all game long, completing 24 of 35 passes for 352 yards while putting together lengthy scoring drives against the Stamps? top-ranked defence. The victory was the 20th 300-yard passing performance of Collaros? career.

Kicker Brett Lauther had another huge game for the Riders, making all five of his field goal attempts. Lauther now leads the league with 50 field goals on the season.

Jordan Williams-Lambert led all receivers on the night with five catches for 113 yards, including 51 total yards after the catch. The 24-year-old receiver consistently gained extra yards and to move the chains for four quarters. Tre Mason and Nick Marshall both added rushing scores for the Riders.

Saskatchewan?s defence managed to contain Bo Levi Mitchell early on, limiting the quarterback to only 48 passing yards in the opening half. Mitchell finished with 221 passing yards and two touchdowns as the offence came to life in the second half, but an interception in the end zone and a number of long offensive drives from the Riders sealed the victory.

Collaros looked sharp on the opening drive, throwing a quick strike to Shaq Evans for a 26-yard gain that set up a 50-yard field goal from Lauther to open the scoring. But the Riders? early lead didn?t last long, as Calgary came up with a big play on special teams just over two minutes later.

Romar Morris caught a 46-yard Saskatchewan punt and juked his way through a narrow gap into the open field for a 78-yard touchdown. Rene Paredes kicked the convert to give Calgary an early 7-3 lead.

Saskatchewan came up with a key special teams return of their own on the very next play when Cameron Marshall accelerated up the field for a 58-yard kickoff return. The big return set up Collaros and the Riders? offence at the Stamps? 47-yard line, and the veteran quarterback made the most of the solid field position. Collaros dropped back and found Williams-Lambert for two quick gains of 28 and 15 yards to put the Riders in position to score.

Mason finished the drive off with a four-yard touchdown run, smashing his way into the end zone to give the lead back to Saskatchewan. Lauther added the extra point to make it a 10-7 game.

The Stamps battled back to tie it up at 10 apiece with a 25-yard field goal from Peredes before the end of the first quarter. Running back Don Jackson was instrumental in setting up the score, gaining three first downs on the drive with a combination of quickness and vision.

Receiver Chris Matthews helped put the Stamps in field goal range with an impressive 27-yard catch, and Mitchell did the rest with an 18-yard strike to reliable Stamps target Eric Rogers.

The Riders managed to retake the lead early in the second quarter after receiver Kyran Moore exploded for a 42-yard catch-and-run. Moore nearly scored on the play before Stamps defensive back Tre Roberson came through with the touchdown-saving tackle.

Collaros connected with Evans on the next play for a 14-yard gain that set up a 27-yard field goal from Lauther, putting the Green and White back on top 13-10.

Lauther extended the Riders? lead with a 49-yard field goal near the end of the half. Williams-Lambert showed his ability to move the chains once again on the scoring drive, using his speed and power to gain 19 yards after the catch on a 24-yard pickup.

Lauther added a 31-yard field goal on the final play of the half after first down pickups from Cameron Marshall, Patrick Lavoie and K.D. Cannon put the Riders in range.

The Stamps? offence came to life after the half, and Mitchell drove his team down the field for a touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter. Mitchell displayed sharp accuracy to find Markeith Ambles, Juwan Brescacin and Romar Morris for first down gains on the drive.

Ambles then took a short pass and almost scored by gaining 14 yards after the catch and diving out near the pylon. Mitchell capped the impressive drive off with a four-yard touchdown pass to receiver Lemar Durant two plays later.

Jackson added a successful two-point conversion with a two-yard rush to the right side, bringing the Stamps within one point in the third quarter at 19-18.

But the Riders answered back right away, as versatile playmaker Nick Marshall flashed game-changing speed on a 24-yard run that brought the team down to the Stamps? eight yard line. Calgary?s defence held strong to force Lauther?s fifth field goal of the night, a 20-yarder that gave the Riders a 22-18 lead.

The Stamps? offence appeared to be driving to take the lead on the next drive after a 27-yard catch from Rogers, but Saskatchewan?s defence stepped up with a crucial turnover when safety Mike Edem picked off Mitchell in the back of the end zone while covering Rogers.

Saskatchewan extended their lead to 11 points in the fourth quarter after Collaros helped lead an 11 play, 85-yard scoring drive. Collaros completed big passes to Evans and Cannon on the drive, and Nick Marshall finished it off with a one-yard touchdown run. Lauther added the extra point to give Saskatchewan the 29-18 lead.

Ambles brought Calgary closer with 13-yard touchdown catch with just over five minutes to play, but Ambles? two-point convert attempt ultimately failed due to a clutch tackle from defensive back Ed Gainey, leaving the final score at 29-24.

The Calgary Stampeders will look to bounce back when they travel to take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers next Friday in Week 20 action, while The Saskatchewan Roughriders will look for their 12th win of the season when they host the BC Lions next Saturday.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 20
David Schwab

Last Friday night in the first matchup in an East Division home-and-home series between Hamilton and Ottawa, the RedBlacks took a big step toward locking up first place with a 35-31 victory at home as slight 1 ?-point underdogs.

Later that night, British Columbia secured a spot in the postseason with a 42-32 victory against West Division rival Edmonton as a 1 ?-point favorite at home.

Saturday?s CFL action got underway with Toronto squeezing past Montreal 26-22 at home, but it could not cover the closing 4 ?-point spread. Saskatchewan was able to keep things interesting in the West Division title race with a 29-24 upset against first-place Calgary as a nine-point road underdog.

Friday, Oct. 26

Calgary Stampeders (12-4 SU, 8-8 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-7 SU, 9-6-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Winnipeg -3 ?
Total: 53 ?

Game Overview

Calgary has dropped its last two games as a heavy home favorite starting with a Week 18 loss to British Columbia. The Stampeders beat Winnipeg 39-26 on Aug. 25 to cover as 7 ?-point favorites at home, but since that point they are 4-3 straight-up and a costly 2-5 against the spread. The total went OVER 49 ? points in Saturday?s loss and it has gone OVER in four of their last six games.

The Blue Bombers still control their own destiny for the final playoff berth coming off last week?s bye. They have a game and a half lead over Edmonton heading into this Friday?s contest. Winnipeg has won its last four games both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER in three of those outings. It remains one of the highest scoring teams in the league and its scoring average during this current winning streak stands a 33.0 points per game.

Betting Trends

-- The Stampeders have won their last five home games against Winnipeg SU and they have a 5-1-1 edge ATS in the last seven meetings in Calgary. The total has gone OVER in five of the last seven matchups in this West Division clash.

Saturday, Oct. 27

Ottawa RedBlacks (9-7 SU, 7-9 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-8 SU, 7-8-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Hamilton -3
Total: 54 ?

Game Overview

Ottawa can lock up the East Division title with a series sweep this Saturday. Hamilton jumped out to a 25-14 lead at the half in last week?s game, but the RedBlacks? defense stepped things up by holding the Tiger-Cats to just six points in the final two quarters. Ottawa?s Trevor Harris played to form by completing 24 of his 32 passing attempts for 341 yards and one score. Dominique Davis scored a trio of rushing touchdowns on just four rushing attempts.

The Tiger-Cats lost the first meeting this season in a 21-15 setback as six-point home favorites in late July. More recently, Friday?s loss dropped them to 2-3 SU and ATS over their last five games. The total went OVER 54 ? points on Friday night and it has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in Hamilton?s last seven outings.

Betting Trends

-- With a pair of victories this season, Ottawa is 4-1 SU in its last five games against the Tiger-Cats with the total going OVER in six of the last nine meetings in this East Division clash.

British Columbia Lions (9-7 AU, 10-6 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (11-6 SU, 9-8 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -4
Total: 52

Game Overview

This should be a great game between a pair of teams playing their best ball at the right time of the year. BC has won six of its last seven games SU with a 5-2 record ATS. The total went OVER 52 ? points in Friday?s win against Edmonton after staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in nine of the Lions? previous 10 games. Travis Lulay shook off the rust from last week?s shaky start to throw for four touchdowns against the Eskimos.

The Roughriders have just two SU losses in their last 10 games, but they have been less reliable as a betting ream with a 2-4 mark ATS in their last six contests. The total went OVER 49 ? points against Calgary and it has gone OVER in six of their last eight games. Zach Collaros lit things up for Saskatchewan on Saturday with 352 yards passing while completing 68.6 percent of his 35 passing attempts. The Roughriders added another 140 yards rushing on 24 attempts.

Betting Trends

-- The Lions have won seven of the last nine meetings SU and ATS with a 5-1 edge ATS in their last six road games against Saskatchewan. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings overall.

Sunday, Oct. 28

Toronto Argonauts (4-12 SU, 6-10 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (3-13 SU, 9-7 ATS)

Point-spread: Montreal -1
Total: 49 ?

Game Overview

Toronto has the early edge for staying out of the basement in the East coming into this season as the defending Grey Cup Champion. Things have been headed in the wrong direction for quite some time with Saturday?s victory snapping a SU seven-game losing streak. The Argonauts are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games with the total going OVER in five of their last seven games.

The only bright spot in Montreal?s three-win campaign is a winning record ATS. The current losing streak stands at five games, but it has been able to cover in each of its last three outings. The total stayed UNDER 50 points against Toronto and it has stayed UNDER in six of the Alouettes? last seven games. Johnny Manziel continues to get the start at quarterback and he threw for 220 yards and one score in Saturday?s losing effort.

Betting Trends

-- The Alouettes are 4-1 both SU and ATS in their last five home games against the Argonauts with the total staying UNDER in five of the last six meetings in Montreal.

GAME RECAP

NICHOLS, BOMBERS DOWN STAMPS TO CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT

WINNIPEG ? A monumental performance from quarterback Matt Nichols combined with strong defensive play to lead the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 29-21 victory over the Calgary Stampeders on Friday night.

Nichols completed 24 of 33 passes for 358 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win, which cemented Winnipeg?s place in the Shaw Road to the Grey Cup playoffs.

Two completions of 50 yards or more ? including one to Darvin Adams, who finished the night with 126 receiving yards ? were key moments in the win for the Bombers.

It was a night of firsts for both quarterbacks, as Nichols earned his first win in nine tries against the Stampeders and Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell lost a third-straight game for the first time in his CFL career.

The Stamps came out firing early with an electric Romar Morris burst on the opening kickoff; the UNC product ripped off a 45-yard return, setting the visitors offence up at the Winnipeg 50-yard line.

Four plays later, Calgary kicker Rene Paredes opened the scoring with a 43-yard field goal.

With both offences stalling, the lone highlight of the first quarter was Winnipeg?s Weston Dressler breaking the 10,000-yard receiving mark on an 11-yard pickup.

The visitors drove down inside the Winnipeg 15-yard line later in the quarter, only for receiver Chris Matthews to fumble and turn the ball over at the Bombers six-yard line.

A strong drive the length of the field ? largely on the ground ? then set Winnipeg?s offence up in the Calgary red zone, but Matt Nichols and co. were forced to settle for a 13-yard Justin Medlock field goal.

Mitchell and the Stamps responded in a big way, with a highlight-reel 65-yard connection to Matthews marching them down near the goal line; two plays later, short-yardage quarterback Nick Arbuckle plunged into the end zone for a touchdown. Calgary?s subsequent two-point convert attempt was dropped by William Langlais, and the score stood at 9-3.

The Stampeders gained further momentum on the ensuing kickoff, as Bombers receiver Nic Demski fumbled the return; Folarin Orimolade came up with the loose ball, and Calgary took over at the Winnipeg 24-yard line.

Two plays later, another Paredes field goal extended the lead to nine points.

The Bombers shaved their deficit back down to a single score late in the second quarter, with Medlock hitting a 35-yard field goal to make it a 12-6 ballgame ? which it would stay into the half.

Nichols then went to work early in the third quarter, unloading a 50-yard bomb of a touchdown pass to an uncovered Darvin Adams; Medlock?s convert subsequently gave the hosts their first lead ? 13-12 ? of the evening.

A heavy fog rolled in during the third quarter, but did not seem to impact the flow of the game.

Calgary confidently marched back down the field and responded with a major on a seven-play, 77-yard drive; after a pair of goal-line stuffs from the Bombers defence on Arbuckle, Mitchell drew back in and chucked a touchdown pass to Markeith Ambles. The Stamps? two-point convert attempt then fell incomplete, and the lead stood at 18-13.

That scoreline lasted all of three plays, as Nichols found Drew Wolitarsky for a eye-catching 60-yard touchdown; the Winnipeg pivot was sacked on the ensuing two-point convert attempt, but the Bombers had regained a 19-18 lead regardless.

Momentum swung further in the hosts? direction on the following possession, when Calgary running back Don Jackson fumbled a catch-and-run deep in his own territory; three plays later, Chris Streveler zipped into the end zone from short range to extend Winnipeg?s lead. Medlock?s convert kick made it an eight-point game.

The Bombers added to their lead with another Medlock boot ? a 13-yard field goal ? on their next possession, pushing the lead to 29-18.

Calgary made some noise late in the night, after coordinator DeVone Claybrooks?s defence came up with a 3rd-and-1 stop at Winnipeg?s own 28-yard line; three plays later, Mitchell appeared to find Eric Rogers on the goal line with a pass. Upon review, it was ruled an incomplete pass and turnover on downs ? a death knell in the comeback attempt.

A Paredes field goal with three seconds left polished off the night?s scoring.

Jovan Santos-Knox tallied a game-high eight tackles, and both he and Adam Bighill forced Stampeder fumbles in the win for Winnipeg.

The Bombers clinched a spot in the playoffs with the victory, moving to 10-7 in the process; Mike O?Shea?s squad will finish up their regular-season schedule with a trip to Edmonton next Saturday (4 p.m. ET).

The defeat was Calgary?s third in a row, and dropped the Stamps to 12-5; it also keeps the West Division regular-season crown up for grabs for at least one more day. Dave Dickenson?s team faces a trip to BC for a date with the red-hot Lions next Saturday (10 p.m. ET).

REDBLACKS CLINCH EAST DIVISION WITH WIN OVER TICATS

HAMILTON ? A damp and windy afternoon in Hamilton left the Tiger-Cats being left out in the cold as the Ottawa REDBLACKS went on to put their stamp on No. 1 in the East Division, defeating the Black and Gold 30-13 at Tim Hortons Field.

As a result, the REDBLACKS will receive the first round bye when playoffs roll around, while the Tiger-Cats will play host to the West Division crossover team in the Eastern Semi-Final game.

Ottawa?s quarterback Trevor Harris finished the game throwing for 267 yards and three touchdowns. He completed 23 of his 30 pass attempts despite the wet conditions that spanned across the duration of the game.

Prior to the game, it was announced that the REDBLACKS would be without the league?s rusher leader in William Powell as he was listed as a healthy scratch, opting to go with former Ticat Mossis Madu.

The Tiger-Cats also announced prior to the start of the game that defensive back Delvin Breaux had been placed on their one-game injury list, activating Mariel Cooper from their practice roster.

Feeding off of good field position that their special teams unit was providing their offence, Trevor Harris and the REDBLACKS offence slowly but surely moved their way deep into the Ticats end of the field, eventually putting up the game?s first points with a Harris to Greg Ellingson connection, followed by a successful two-point conversion to give Ottawa the 8-0 lead with 5:11 remaining in the opening quarter.

Special teams proved its worth for either team as the two teams combined for nearly 200 yards on kick returns alone. A much better stat line than the 97 yards of total offence that Ottawa and Hamilton combined for.

Sticking to the ground game, Alex Green broke loose for a 36 yard gain towards the end of the first quarter as the Tiger-Cats started to march their way downfield, doubling their total offensive output at that point with the rush. The following play then went for 12 yards with a pass completion to Marquay McDaniel. Despite the positive movement, the REDBLACKS would dig in their heels and force the Tabbies to settle for a 14-yard field goal by Lirim Hajrullahu in the early-going of the second quarter.

On the ensuing drive for the REDBLACKS, Rick Campbell reached into his bag of tricks as he sent in Dominique Davis on a third down play, catching the Ticats off guard as they anticipated a sneak from Davis, who?s typically reserved for short-yardage situations. Instead, Davis rolled out and found a wide-open Greg Ellingson for a 75-yard touchdown to boost the REDBLACKS ahead to a 15-4 lead.

A few minutes later, kicking into the aggressive wind, Lirim Hajrullahu?s punt travelled a mere 32 yards, putting the REDBLACKS already into field goal position. Four plays later, Harris connected with Diontae Spencer for Ottawa?s third touchdown pass of the game, extending the REDBLACKS lead to 21-4 after Lewis Ward missed the conversion attempt.

The Tiger-Cats offence continued to be able to move the ball no problem but continued to find themselves getting stopped in the red zone, settling for another field goal by Hajrullahu, narrowing the REDBLACKS lead to a two-touchdown advantage at 21-7 with under two minutes to play in the first half. Hajrullahu had luck on his side despite kicking into the wind as time expired on the half, having his 43-yard field goal bounce off the crossbar and through the uprights to bring the halftime score to 21-10.

Hajrullahu pulled the Tiger-Cats within a score early on in the third quarter with his fourth field goal of the game, having the wind at Tim Hortons Field helping to carry the 41-yard field goal attempt.

Brad Sinopoli set a record in the third quarter, surpassing Ben Cahoon for most receptions by a Canadian in a single season, making his 113th catch of the year.

Harris, on a night where he passed 5,000 yards in a season for the first time in his career, kept the success flying for the REDBLACKS, connecting with Diontae Spencer for a 79-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. The score marked Spencer?s seventh touchdown of the season, a career-high for the Ottawa receiver.

Spencer finished the game making four receptions for 116 yards.

In the fourth quarter, a week after setting the professional football?s record for most consecutive field goals made, Lewis Ward further extended his mark to 46 after notching a 33-yard kick, further extending the REDBLACKS lead to 30-13.

Any chance fo the Ticats making a late comeback was silenced as Jeremiah Masoli was picked off in the end zone by Ottawa?s Sherrod Baltimore.

As time continued to tick away, Masoli followed the interception with another on the Tiger-Cats next offensive drive, adding another nail to Hamilton?s coffin for the day. Jean-Philippe Bolduc was at the receiving end of the Masoli throw, earning Bolduc his first-career interception.

The win gives Ottawa the guaranteed No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs for the East Division. They will face the Toronto Argonauts in their final regular season game at TD Place Stadium in the nation?s capital. As for the Tiger-Cats, they will welcome the Montreal Alouettes to Tim Hortons Field on Saturday before hosting the Eastern Semi-Final the following week.

RIDERS CLINCH HOME PLAYOFF GAME WITH WIN OVER LIONS

REGINA ? The Saskatchewan Roughriders are riding a modest winning streak of two, as their defence put on a dominant display to silence the Lions? growl earning a 35-16 victory.

Zack Evans and Ed Gainey each scored a defensive touchdown, as the Riders moved into a tie for the single-season record with 11 defensive touchdowns on the campaign.

More importantly, the one-sided win helped the Green and White clinch at least second in the West and a home playoff game, with an opportunity to win the division depending on the result of the Calgary Stampeders? Week 21 matchup with the BC Lions in the season finale.

The win did not come without its cost, however. Quarterback Zach Collaros was sidelined in the second half after taking a hit from Odell Willis and did not return. He was replaced by Brandon Bridge, who completed four of nine attempts for 44 yards in relief to complete the victory.

Tre Mason also left the game and did not return, with Cameron Marshall handling the Riders? backfield to the tune of 134 rushing yards on 19 attempts.

The first frame opened up with impressive defensive displays put on by both sides that had Riders QB Zach Collaros and Lions QB Travis Lulay without much room to maneuver, nor a window to put the ball through.

The Riders struck first by hitting two straight field goals from beyond the 45-yard-line to take a 6-0 early first quarter lead. The boots and scores were separated by a 20-yard catch and run by Riders receiver Shaq Evans, his 50th catch of the campaign and the longest play of the first quarter.

As the quarter unfolded and the clock ticked down inside five minutes, the game?s first big play came right on cue when Riders defensive lineman Willie Jefferson went full on vertical to bat a Lulay pass attempt sky high for his fellow lineman Toby Antigha to come with, Jefferson?s fourth knock down on the year.

Following the turnover, a hard hit laid on Collaros by Lions defensive end Odell Willis led to a roughing the passer call following a Chris Jones challenge, setting the Riders up in the red zone. On the ensuing play, Rider back Tre Mason took off around the edge, reaching and just nicking the pylon for an added seven onto their lead, 13-0 Saskatchewan with zeroes on the clock.

With Collaros sidelined following the scoring drive, due to what Jones would later describe as precautionary reasons, the defences continued to buckle down in the second quarter. Brandon Bridge stepped in for Collaros, entering the game with a 2-2 record as a starter and looking to maintain the Riders? lead.

The Lions had an opportunity to get their first score of the tilt, but a missed field goal booted by Ty Long limited their effort to just a single, getting the Lions on the board with a 13-1 Saskatchewan lead.

Then the Lions started to growl with a huge takeaway put on by Lions stud T.J. Lee?s right hand when it came swinging in to jitter the ball loose. Despite the takeaway, the Riders had the last laugh, standing tall and letting nothing up, much like they had done all night on defence.

With a minute left in first half, Saskatchewan extended its lead with another boot through the upright, making it 16-1, but shortly after, their lead was shaved to 14 points when BC added another single, making it 16-2 after two.

The second half kicked off like it usually does with a routine kick, except the return was all but routine. The Lions pounced and forced their second fumble and recovery of the game, setting the Lions up in Riders territory.

Did the Lions capitalize? They sure did and it did not take long at all, literally. It took Travis Lulay just one play to strike through 44 yards of air into Bryan Burnham?s mitts to cut right into the Riders lead and get BC right back into the action. The connection was Lulay?s 127th TD pass of his career and it couldn?t have come at a better time, cutting the deficit to 16-9.

Once again Saskatchewan looked to add some breathing room, but a missed field goal that went right off the upright for a dead ball had that humming BC offence back on the field. Unfortunately for BC, they couldn?t do much to penetrate the ruthless Saskatchewan defence. BC decided to concede two points off a safety, making it a 18-9 Riders lead.

The Riders ended up pinning the ball inside BC?s 10-yard-line, setting up a critical play in the game for the Rider defence. As Lulay was stepping into a deep ball that had everyone, including the cameraman, fooled, he was stripped by Willie Jefferson, who got inside enemy lines. The forced fumble had the ball bouncing on the one yard line when it was scooped up by the Riders? Zack Evans, who took it in for six.

The point-after extended the Riders? lead to 25-9, which stayed the same right up until the end of the third.

Early in the fourth quarter the Lions again found themselves pinned back deep in their own end. Lulay stepped up for a serious deep feed that connected, only right to the Riders? Ed Gainey, who took it right back to the barn for six. Gainey, wearing number eleven, got the Riders? 11th defensive touchdown of the season and tied a CFL record. The Riders extended their lead to 32-9 and that was all she wrote for Travis Lulay, with Jonathon Jennings coming in to replace him.

Jennings added a spark to the struggling BC Lions? offence. Jennings found Lions receiver Anthony Parker for 34 yards, which set up just a few punches which was finally capped off by Lions QB Cody Fajardo, who snuck in from the one. That capped off an eight-play, 67-yard drive that was engineered by Jennings, cutting the deficit to 32-16.

The Riders continued to pounce and the glimmer of light for BC?s night was turned off as the Riders held on to extend their winning streak to two.

BC hosts a dangerous Calgary Stampeders squad in the final week of the regular season, while the Riders will have a breather with a week off. They?ll watch with hopes of a BC win, which would clinch the Riders a division title and a bye week to the Western Final on Nov. 18.

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

13) Kentucky 15, Missouri 14? Mizzou got called for pass interference in the end zone on the last play of the game, so Kentucky got another play, threw a 2-yard TD pass, and now Wildcats are 7-1.

Missouri had zero first downs in the second half- none.

12) Cincinnati 26, SMU 20 OT? Bearcats kicked 41-yard FG at the gun to force OT, then ran back an INT 86 yards for the game-winning TD in overtime. That hasn?t happened much, where a defensive score decided a game in overtime.

11) Kansas 27, TCU 26? Horned Frogs fumbled on the Kansas 10-yard line in last 2:00, screwing up what would at least have been the game-tying FG.

From 2015-17, Jayhawks were 3-33; this year, they?re 3-5, so big improvement for them.

In their last six games, TCU is -14 in turnovers (2-16).

10) Iowa State 40, Texas Tech 31? Cyclone fans better enjoy this, because their coach Matt Campbell ain?t going to be in Ames much longer? the big-$$$ people will come calling for him, and soon, then the Iowa State revival will be in jeopardy.

This game was 31-all with under 5:00 left when Tech got called for intentional grounding in their own end zone, which out ISU up 33-31. On the ensuing series, Cyclones had 3rd-and-9 but threw a 48-yard TD pass, putting the game out of reach.

Lot of points for a game with two freshman QB?s playing.

9) Clemson 59, Florida State 10? Oy. This is the worst Florida State team since Bobby Bowden got to Tallahassee over 40 years ago. Willie Taggart needs to have a seriously positive run of good recruiting; this game tied a 49-0 loss to Florida in 1973 as the worst loss in FSU history.

8) Penn State 30, Iowa 24? Iowa had the ball on Penn State?s 3-yard line with 3:17 left, but threw a hideous INT where instead of calling a timeout to get organized, Iowa?s QB ran a play and QB/WR weren?t on the same page, and Penn State got the clinching INT.

Hawkeyes had two safeties in first 16:39 of this game; don?t see that a lot; Iowa?s punter also threw a TD on a fake FG. Rough day for Iowa?s QB; in the first half, they ran a play action fake and had a TE wide-open (by 20 yards) for an easy TD, but the QB overthrew the pass.

7) Upsets of the Week:
? Oregon State (+23.5) 41, Colorado 34
? Kansas (+13.5) 27, TCU 26
? California (+10.5) 12, Washington 10
? Georgia Southern (+8) 34, Appalachian State 14
? Northern Illinois (+7.5) 7, BYU 6
? Kentucky (+7) 15, Missouri 14
? Charlotte (+6.5) 20, Southern Miss 17
? Northwestern (+6) 31, Wisconsin 17

6) Georgia Tech 49, Virginia Tech 28? We mentioned how Yellow Jackets didn?t complete a pass in this game Thursday; last college team to score 40+ points in a road game without completing a pass? Ohio Bobcats, in 2002, in a 50-0 win at Kent State.

5) Oregon State 41, Colorado 34 OT? Horrific loss for Colorado; Buffs led this game 31-3 with 9:00 left in third quarter, but lose as a 23-point favorite.

4) Wake Forest 56, Louisville 35? Few years ago, Louisville coach Petrino pulled a scholarship from a RB named Matt Colburn right before Signing Day, leaving the kid without a place to play ball. Wake Forest wound up signing him; Saturday, Colburn ran for 202 yards and three TD?s??against Louisville.

3) Arizona State 38, USC 35? Go-ahead TD was a 92-yard punt return for a TD by N?Keal Harry late in 3rd quarter where USC appeared to have lot of big guys covering the punt? lot of numbers in the 70?s chasing a very fast guy, which seldom ends well for the team that kicked.

Trojans are 4-4; the natives are restless. coach Helton?s seat is very hot- they scored 35 points with their 3rd-string QB playing, but one TD was a punt return, another a trick play.

2) Georgia 36, Florida 17? Dawgs outgained Florida 429-275, and the Gators had won five in a row coming in. All seven of Georgia?s wins are by 14+ points. Top of the SEC is a meat grinder.

1) LA led 4-0 after six innings, but the Dodger bullpen imploded and now Boston leads the World Series 3-1, with Game 5 tonight.

PREVIEW

ARGOS, ALS CLOSE OUT HOME-AND-HOME IN SUNDAY MATINEE

MONTREAL ? Two squads with their focus firmly turned to 2019 will meet Sunday afternoon in Montreal, where the Alouettes host the Argos in a rematch of Week 19?s last-minute thriller in Toronto.

Marc Trestman?s Argonauts scored a 26-22 win on that afternoon, thanks to a James Franklin sneak touchdown with 56 seconds left to play; it snapped Toronto?s seven-game losing streak, and extended Montreal?s active one to five games.

All eyes will be on the quarterbacks come Sunday, as James Franklin and Johnny Manziel continue their quests to solidify the starting jobs with the Argos and Als respectively next season.

Last week?s meeting saw Franklin throw a pair of interceptions but also rush for two short-yardage touchdowns; Manziel threw a touchdown and interception in the defeat for Montreal.

The Argos will hand the ball to Franklin on Sunday; the 27 year-old is trying to establish himself in his first season with more than 150 pass attempts, and you can be sure General Manager Jim Popp will be watching his performance closely in the final weeks of a disappointing 2018 campaign.

?I?ve got to continue to have more confidence and trust in the guys with some of the routes,? Franklin, who tossed two INTs last week after three relatively clean performances, told Argonauts.ca. ?We were on the wrong page on a couple routes last week, (so) I want to play with more confidence (and) make sure I?m on the same page as them.?

Defensive tackle Dylan Wynn will dress for the second straight week after missing two months with an injury; the 25-year-old Oregon State product is excited to be back healthy with his teammates.

?I took every week just like I was playing it, (but) it was a long break ? it?s good to be back,? said Wynn, a divisional all-star last season. ?(I?d do) anything I can to help the team, whether that?s helping the younger guys with their technique and execution, or anything I can do checking out an O-line.?

Wynn?s numbers are down this year ? from six sacks and 34 tackles in 15 games last season to two sacks in nine games this year ? but the Concord, Calif. native is just fired up to be back on a football field.

?We?re professionals, we get paid for this,? said Wynn when asked about motivation at this late stage of the season. ?You?ve got to give everything you?ve got, because you don?t know when your last play?s going to be.

?(I was) out for eight weeks this year?you don?t know when the last snap is, and you?re a fool if you?re not taking advantage of every rep you get.?

Toronto snapped a seven-game skid with the win last week on home turf, something head coach Marc Trestman and his charges had been in serious need of.

?The biggest thing is when you?re in the locker room after a win, it?s the best time to reflect on the work you did the entire week,? said Trestman. ?It gives guys some perspective on how hard it is to win in professional sports, and the time to just be grateful for that, and then move onto the next week.?

The main story in Montreal this week centred around big-name quarterback Johnny Manziel, after rumours of a locker room divide surfaced from a TVA Sports football journalist.

Manziel, who has shown improvement over the course of his six starts with the Alouettes, strongly denied the existence of any riff and ? later in the week to TSN?s John Lu ? reaffirmed his commitment to the team in 2019.

?I come in here to work every day, I treat my guys in the locker room with respect,? Manziel told RDS. ?Ask the guys, ask around, see what they have to say. I have great friends on this team, that I care about and will have lifelong friendships with.

?Whoever?s out there spreading the negative things like that, they?re absolutely wrong,? continued the embattled quarterback. ?You can ask around this locker room and find out about it, I can guarantee you that.?

Sunday?s final home game ? along with Week 21?s curtain-closer in Hamilton ? will be played for nothing more than pride in Als camp, with the team anchored to the bottom of the East Division standings at 3-13.

?We definitely want to play with pride and finish well,? said centre Kristian Matte. ?On the line, I want to still be proud of the way I play, and I want to show that I?m a good player.

?We?re not going to let up in the final weeks of the season ? nobody?s like that on this team,? continued the 33-year-old veteran. ?We?re a confident, proud group, not proud of the season we?ve had, but we want to be proud of the way we end the season.?

By The Numbers:

0 ? Wins in six starts for Montreal QB Johnny Manziel since joining the Alouettes. The Texas A&M product has thrown three touchdowns against seven interceptions in that time; backup Antonio Pipkin, who owns a 2-2 record as a starter, has thrown one touchdown against eight interceptions.

58 ? Team-high tackles recorded by Toronto?s Alden Darby this season; the versatile hybrid defender also had a pair of pick-sixes earlier this season in back-to-back weeks (Week 11 @ MTL, Week 12 @ HAM)

77.1 ? Average QB rating between starters Johnny Manziel (74.3) and James Franklin (80.0), who rank sixth and eighth in the category amongst Week 20 starters ? sandwiching Saskatchewan?s Zach Collaros at 79.5.

275 ? Total points scored by the Alouettes this season, the lowest mark in the league; Toronto owns the second-lowest output at 350. Khari Jones?s Montreal offence ranks last in nearly every major statistical category (pass yards, pass TDs, rush TDs, possession time and sacks allowed).

If last week?s contest at BMO Field was any indication, both the Alouettes and Argonauts are going to take their deep shots, play to win and open up the playbook.

With players competing for 2019 jobs ? and understanding that neither organization is satisfied with their respective sub.-500 performances this year ? there?s still plenty on the line in this Week 20 matchup.

The storylines are plentiful.

Will William Stanback build on his career-best 118-yard performance last week? Can James Franklin build his off-season case to enter 2019 as the starter? Which of these struggling units ? both teams rank last and second-last in offensive production and defensive points allowed ? will step up in the closing weeks of the season?

Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN2.

STANBACK, BOWMAN SHINE AS ALOUETTES SINK ARGOS

MONTREAL ? Sunday was a day to celebrate rookies and veterans alike for the Montreal Alouettes, as they downed the Toronto Argonauts 40-10 in their final home game of 2018 at Percival Molson Stadium.

Rookie running back William Stanback racked up 112 all-purpose yards along with his first and second career touchdowns in the Montreal victory, while veteran defensive end John Bowman electrified the Alouette faithful one final time with a late-game defensive touchdown.

Als quarterback Johnny Manziel threw for a respectable 139 yards and a touchdown prior to being lifted at halftime in favour of backup Antonio Pipkin, who threw for 46 yards and a touchdown in a run-dominated second half. Sunday?s victory stands as Manziel?s first in the CFL.

Montreal?s back field was in good hands beyond Stanback, as rookie Lawrence Pittman also racked up a career-high 60 rush yards.

The Alouettes opened the scoring, as Manziel and Stanback drove down to the Toronto six-yard line to set up a 13-yard chip shot of a field goal from kicker Boris Bede.

Ronnie Pfeffer got the visitors on the board midway through the first quarter, sending a booming punt 57 yards into the end zone where Montreal return man Stef Logan conceded the rouge.

Nebraska product Drew Brown then continued his perfect debut season in the CFL, nailing a 25-yard field goal to give the Argos a 4-3 lead.

Montreal regained the lead on the final play of the first quarter; Manziel rolled out and lobbed a short pass to Stanback, who then scampered 42 yards to the end zone for his first career CFL touchdown. Bede?s subsequent convert made it a 10-4 ballgame.

A 33-yard boot from Bede extended the lead to 13-4 and the Als were off to the races.

Momentum swung further in the hosts? direction midway through the second quarter, when a 44-yard field goal attempt by Brown was blocked by Montreal?s Woody Baron. Veteran John Bowman ? all-but-confirmed to be playing in his final game at Percival Molson Stadium ? came up with the loose ball.

One play later, the Als were back in the end zone thanks to some razzle dazzle; Manziel threw a lateral to receiver Eugene Lewis, who then quickly chucked a deep bomb to a wide-open George Johnson for a 61-yard major.

Two kicks from Bede ? the ensuing convert kick and a 26-yard field goal to close out the half ? sent the Alouettes to the locker room with a 23-4 lead.

Montreal head coach Mike Sherman raised some eyebrows with a halftime switch, lifting Manziel in favour of Antonio Pipkin, but RDS?s Didier Ormejuste reported the decision was strictly made to evaluate Pipkin.

The Als immediately extended their lead four minutes into the second half with a 21-yard Bede field goal.

Quarterback James Franklin and the Argos finally found the end zone late in the third quarter, capping an eight-play, 91-yard drive with a pretty touchdown pass to Armanti Edwards. Toronto?s two-point convert attempt fell incomplete, and the hosts? lead stood at 26-10.

Bowman?s farewell tour in front of the home fans earned a raucous round of applause early in the fourth quarter, when he hauled Franklin to the turf for a sack.

The 13-year veteran then put an exclamation mark on the day, recovering a Franklin fumble ? forced by teammate Ryan Brown ? in the end zone for a defensive touchdown; Bede?s convert made it 33-10.

Montreal?s offence added another point of emphasis in the final minute, as Pipkin found Stanback for a 10-yard catch-and-run touchdown; Bede?s subsequent boot rounded out the scoring at 40-10.

Sunday?s result drew the Als back on level terms with the Argos in the battle to not finish last, with both squads now owning 4-13 records.

Toronto will finish its 2018 season next Friday in the nation?s capital, where the Argos will visit the REDBLACKS on Friday Night Football (7:30 p.m. ET).

Mike Sherman?s Alouettes will aim to build on the win next week, wrapping up their season on the road in Hamilton against the Tiger-Cats next Saturday (7:00 p.m. ET).

CFL Betting Notes - Week 21
David Schwab

Calgary may still have the best record in the CFL, but it heads into the final week of the regular season on a straight-up three-game losing streak after falling to Winnipeg 29-21 on Friday night as a 3 ?-point road underdog.

In the first of two Saturday games, Ottawa tripped up Hamilton 3013 as a 4 ?-point road underdog to sweep the home-and-home series while also locking up the East Division title. Saskatchewan remained in the hunt for the division title in the West with a 35-16 victory against British Columbia as a 4 ?-point home favorite.

Week 20 wrapped things up on Sunday with Montreal playing its best game of the season in a 40-10 victory against Toronto as a rare three-point home favorite.

Friday, Nov. 2

Toronto Argonauts (4-13 SU, 6-11 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (10-7 SU, 8-9 ATS)

Point-spread: Ottawa -7
Total: 53 ?

Game Overview

The Argonauts have finally gotten to the point they are just phoning it in after giving up 40 points to the worst offense in the league. One score was actually recorded by Montreal?s defense, but at this point does it really matter. They have failed to cover in seven of their last nine games with the total going OVER in six of the last eight outings.

Ottawa has little to play for in this regular-season finale after winning the East to secure a first round bye in the playoffs. The RedBlacks head into the postseason with some solid momentum after going 4-2 both SU and ATS in their last six games, including that impressive sweep over Hamilton the last two weeks. Trevor Harris had another big day in Saturday?s win with 267 yards passing and three touchdown throws.

Betting Trends

-- Ottawa has covered in six of its last nine home games against Toronto while also going 6-3 SU. The total has stayed UNDER in five of the last six meetings overall.

Saturday, Nov. 3

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (10-7 SU, 10-6-1 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (8-9 SU, 7-10 ATS)

Point-spread: Edmonton -5
Total: 55

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers eliminated Edmonton from the playoffs with Friday?s win against Calgary. They also extended their current winning streak to five games both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER in four of the five victories. Matt Nichols played one of his best games of the season at just the right time with 358 yards passing and two scoring strikes against the Stampeders.

Coming off a Week 20 bye, the Eskimos can point to a 1-4 slide both SU and ATS in their previous five games as the main reason why their season will come to an end after this game. They could also point to an offense that ran out of steam down the stretch with 15 points or less in three of its last five contests. Mike Reilly still leads the CFL in total passing yards (5,242).

Betting Trends

-- The first two games of this season series was split with the road team winning SU. Winnipeg covered in both contests as part of a 4-1 record ATS in its last five games against the Eskimos. The total has stayed UNDER in the last five meetings in Edmonton.

Montreal Alouettes (4-13 SU, 10-7 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-9 SU, 7-9-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Hamilton -6
Total: 53

Game Overview

Alouettes? fans have to be happy that another dismal season finally comes to an end. Other than this Sunday?s win, it has been a very hard campaign to endure with an offense that has averaged 18.5 points per game. With three different players under center on Sunday, Montreal gained 246 yards through the air to complement a ground game that racked up 180 yards on 24 carries.

The Tiger-Cats cannot be all too happy with 2-4 (SU and ATS) slide in their last six games, but they can still rest their starters if they want ahead of next week?s home game in the first round of the playoffs. The total stayed UNDER 53 ? points in Saturday?s loss to Ottawa after going OVER or ending as a PUSH in Hamilton?s previous seven games. It went OVER 50 ? points in a 50-11 road win against Montreal as a seven-point favorite on Aug. 3.

Betting Trends

-- The Tiger-Cats have gone 12-2 SU in their last 14 home games against Montreal and the total has stayed UNDER in six of the last eight meetings in Hamilton.

Calgary Stampeders (12-5 SU, 8-9 ATS) at British Columbia Lions (9-8 AU, 10-7 ATS)
Point-spread: OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

A second-straight season-ending collapse has bettors questioning the value in betting with the Stampeders as the top team in the league. After losing their final three games last season (SU and ATS), they are 0-3 SU in their last three outings this time around with a costly 2-6 mark ATS over their last eight games. They still need to win on Saturday to win the West and earn a first round bye.

The Lions? loss to Saskatchewan on Saturday snapped a SU three-game winning streak. After failing to cover in that game, they are 2-3 ATS in their last five games. The total ended as a PUSH on a closing line of 51 points and it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in 10 of BC?s last 12 games. Travis Lulay turned in a dismal performance on Saturday with 94 yards passing and two interceptions while completing just nine of his 20 passing attempts.

Betting Trends

-- The Stampeders have won eight of the last 10 meetings SU, but this season?s series has been evenly split SU with each team winning once in Calgary. The Lions covered in both games with the total staying UNDER each time as well.
