CFL Betting Notes - Week 17
David Schwab

The final weekend of CFL games in the month of September tipped things off on Friday night with Calgary rolling over Toronto 38-16 to easily cover the 13-point spread at home. The Stampeders officially clinched a playoff spot with that win.

Saturday?s action got underway with the Hamilton pasting British Columbia 40-10 as a 6 ?-point home favorite to even this home-and-home series at one game apiece. Later that night, Winnipeg made a statement in the West Division playoff race with an impressive 30-3 victory against Edmonton as a 5 ?-point underdog on the road.

Week 16 in the CFL carried over to Sunday with Saskatchewan slipping past Montreal 34-29, but failing to cover as a 6 ?-point road favorite.

Friday, Oct. 5

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7-7 SU, 7-6-1 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (8-5 SU, 6-7 ATS)

Point-spread: Ottawa -1
Total: 52 ?

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers have won their last two games both straight-up and against the spread to move into a tie for third in the West standings. The total has stayed UNDER in both contests after going OVER in their previous four games. They have benefitted from much better play on the defensive side of the ball the last two games. During its previous four-game losing streak, Winnipeg had allowed at least 31 points in each of the four losses.

Ottawa is a game and half ahead of Hamilton in the East coming off last week?s bye. It brings a modest two-game winning streak (SU and ATS) into Friday?s inter-division clash and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the RedBlacks? last six games. They are 2-4 ATS at home this season and 2-4 ATS in six previous games closing as favorites. Trevor Harris is fourth in the CFL in total passing yards and he has tossed 14 touchdowns. Despite the bye, he is still listed as questionable on the latest injury report.

Betting Trends

-- Winnipeg has covered ATS in eight of its last 12 games against the RedBlacks, but it lost the first meeting this season 44-21 as a 6 ?-point home favorite. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings in Ottawa.

Saturday, Oct. 6

Toronto Argonauts (3-10 SU, 5-8 ATS) at British Columbia Lions (6-7 AU, 8-5 ATS)

Point-spread: BC -7
Total: 51 ?

Game Overview

Toronto?s straight-up losing streak reached five games with Friday night?s loss. The defending Grey Cup Champions continue to play their way out of this season?s playoffs. They have only covered the spread once in this current slide and the total has gone OVER the closing line in their last four games with a points-allowed average of 36.5 points in those four losses. Toronto gave up 24 unanswered second-half points against Calgary after trailing by just four points at the half.

The Lions recent three-game winning streak (SU and ATS) came to an end with Saturday?s loss. That total ended as a PUSH on a closing line of 50 after staying UNDER in five of their previous seven games. BC lost to Toronto 24-23 in August with Travis Lulay at quarterback. It closed as a three-point road favorite with the total staying UNDER 50 ? points. Jonathan Jennings and Cody Fajardo split time at quarterback in Saturday?s loss with a combined 215 yards passing, one touchdown throw and three interceptions.

Betting Trends

-- Toronto has won four of its last five road games against the Lions SU and it has a 5-1 edge ATS in its last six trips to BC. The total has stayed UNDER in five of the last six meetings overall.

Monday, Oct. 8

Calgary Stampeders (11-2 SU, 8-5 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (3-11 SU, 7-7 ATS)

Point-spread: Calgary -12
Total: 50 ?

Game Overview

The Stampeders have had a few hiccups along the way, but they have once again positioned themselves for a deep run at this year?s Grey Cup title. This will be the 14th-straight season they advanced to the playoffs, but the memory of two-straight losses in the title game as favorites is still fresh in their mind. Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed 20 of his 34 passing attempts against Toronto on Friday night for 307 yards and two scores. He has now tossed 29 touchdowns on the year.

Give credit to the Alouettes for covering against one of the hottest teams in the CFL in the loss to Saskatchewan, but you get the feeling that Montreal fans are counting the days for this season to be over. Johnny Manziel tossed a pair of touchdowns in Sunday?s loss against no interceptions, but he ended the day with just 138 yards passing to go with a team-high 45 yards running the ball.

Betting Trends

-- Montreal has been able to cover in seven of its last eight games against Calgary including a 25-8 loss in July as a heavy 19 ?-point road underdog. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last nine meetings.

Edmonton Eskimos (7-7 SU, 6-8 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-5 SU, 7-7 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -4
Total: 52 ?

Game Overview

Behind Mike Reilly as the CFL?s most prolific passer and CJ Gable as the third leading rusher in the league, the Eskimos had been able to average 28.3 points through the first 13 games of the season. This is what made the recent three-point effort against Winnipeg so stunning at this point of the season. It never helps when you turn the ball over seven times resulting in 20 points for the opposing team.

Saskatchewan has a golden opportunity to take a firm grip on the second spot in the West Division playoffs while posting its seventh SU win in its last eight games if it can get past Edmonton on Monday. The Roughriders have failed to cover in their last three outings. The total has gone OVER in their last five games and they have scored at least 30 points in four of those contests.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has a 4-2 edge against its West Division rivals in its last six trips to Saskatchewan and it has gone 5-2 ATS in its last seven road games against the Roughriders. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings in Saskatchewan.

GAME RECAP

NICHOLS SHINES AS BOMBERS TOP REDBLACKS IN OVERTIME THRILLER

OTTAWA ? It was a certain victory, until it wasn?t.

Despite holding a 15-point lead with just over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Blue Bombers saw a victory which seemed so sure nearly slip through their hands after Trevor Harris and the REDBLACKS staged a remarkable comeback, tying the game in regulation and forcing OT.

But it was the Bombers who emerged victorious, as QB Matt Nichols and his offence converted the touchdown and two-point conversion in overtime while the defence did the rest, as LB Adam Bighill forced a fumble to seal the victory for Winnipeg.

Nichols finished the game with 265 yards passing and three touchdowns, while RB Andrew Harris racked up 163 all-purpose yards, including 132 rushing.

The Bombers were desperate to reverse their fortunes from the last time the two teams met, suffering a lopsided victory at the hands of the REDBLACKS back in week 10.

After an opening drive field goal by Justin Medlock opened the scoring for the Blue Bombers, the REDBLACKS took over, and RB William Powell showed why he is the leafs leading rusher through 16 weeks. After a quick toss by QB Trevor Harris to WR Greg Ellingson, Powell found a gaping hole in the Bomber defence, sprinting down the left sideline for a 48-yard gain. Two plays later, Harris found Powell on a wheel route and the running back made no mistake, finding the end zone for the game?s first major. Despite K Lewis Ward?s remarkable consistency, the REDBLACKS opted to go for the two-point convert, and Harris found SB Brad Sinopoli for the conversion.

Matt Nichols picked up right where he left off on the Bombers second drive, completing six of seven passes on an efficient drive, picking his way through the REDBLACKS defence with completions to four different receivers. After an Andrew Harris rush put the Bombers at the 11, Nichols capped the drive by finding Darvin Adams for the touchdown, pushing the Bombers back into the lead.

The two teams traded field goals on their next two drives as offences ruled in a first half which saw five lead changes.

After a would-be first down for the REDBLACKS was cancelled out by an offensive penalty, DE Tristan Okpalaugo made one of the first big defensive plays of the game, bringing down Harris in the backfield for a sack and forcing the first punt of the game midway through the second quarter.

Defences tightened up as the half drew to a close after a wide-open first quarter, and Medlock kicked home his fourth field goal of the half as time expired to give the Blue Bombers a 19-11 lead.

Starting at their own 46-yard line, the Bombers made their way all the way down to the REDBLACKS five yard line, thanks in large part to a big 19-yard scamper by RB Andrew Harris. But they couldn?t find the dagger for their second major of the evening, and settled for yet another Medlock field goal ? his fifth of the night ? and extended Winnipeg?s lead to 11 points.

Despite Medlock?s dominance in this one, his counterpart on the REDBLACKS found a way to outshine him. Rookie kicker Lewis Ward responded with another field goal of his own, in the process tying the all-time record of 39 consecutive field goals.

Andrew Harris continued to put his mark on the game for the Bombers, ripping off a 23-yard gain on the first play of the ensuing Winnipeg drive. But teammate Nic Demski didn?t fare nearly as well on the following play, as he lost a hold of the football and the REDBLACKS recovered in prime field position.

Ottawa?s offence failed to convert a first down on their ensuing possession, and rather than going for it on third and short, the REDBLACKS turned to their trusty kicker to help chip away at the Blue Bombers lead. With a 39-yard field goal, rookie Lewis Black set a new CFL record with his 40th consecutive field goal, surpassing the record previously set by Rene Paredes.

The fourth quarter brought a breakthrough for the Blue Bombers, as Matt Nichols? tossed his second touchdown pass of the game, this time finding SB Weston Dressler. The short drive was aided in part by a couple of roughness penalties by the REDBLACKS defence, a thorn in Ottawa?s side for much of the evening.

Another Medlock field goal extended the Bomber lead to 15, but the REDBLACKS weren?t giving up just yet.

Harris came out firing, first finding Brad Sinopoli for a 19 yard gain, and then putting a perfect pass into the hands of Julian Feoli-Gudino for another big first down. Harris would find his latter target once more two plays later wide open down the right sideline, as Feoli-Gudino scored his first touchdown as a member of the REDBLACKS.

Ward?s convert brought Ottawa to within eight points of the Bombers with juust over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

After a big stop by the REDBLACKS defence, Harris and the offence got the ball back with just under two minutes to go, and a long field to drive in order to tie the game up.

Facing third-and-three with the game on the line, SB Greg Ellingson brought down a remarkable catch to convert the first down and keep Ottawa?s chances alive. After being invisible in the first half, Feoli-Gudino continued to be a gamebreaker late in this one, making several key catches on the drive.

But it was Ellingson who shone brightest late in the game, bringing down a pass from Harris to move inside the 10-yard line, and capping the drive with a crucial touchdown catch just inside the end zone. Not content to finish his night there, Ellingson also brought in the two-point conversion, tying the game at 32 and forcing overtime.

After losing the coin-toss, The Bombers would get possession first, and Nichols and the offence did their job. Nichols first found Dressler for his second touchdown of the night before completing the two-point convert to Darvin Adams.

The REDBLACKS nearly got it done on their drive following the score, but Adam Bighill forced a Brad Sinopoli fumble to end the game.

LIONS LOOK TO HELP PLAYOFF ODDS VS. ARGOS

VANCOUVER ? The BC Lions will try to keep pace in the West when they take on the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday at BC Place.

The Lions are in a tight race for a playoff spot. BC currently sits last in a log jammed division, but is only two points back of fourth place Edmonton and four points back of third seated Winnipeg.

While the Argos have not mathematically been ruled out of the playoffs, their chances of making the post-season are bleak, but the defending Grey Cup Champions can stay alive with a win Saturday night.

The Double Blue dropped to 3-10 on the season with a lopsided 38-16 loss to the Calgary Stampeders last week. Toronto trailed by only four points heading into halftime, but the Stamps proved why they own the best record in the league, galloping away in the second half.

Pivot McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw for 273 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. The loss was Toronto?s fifth straight.

Despite a disappointing year for the reigning Grey Cup Champs, Head Coach Marc Trestman is determined to finish the season strong.

?I tend to see the glass half full,? Trestman told Argonauts.ca after the game. ?I think we?ve got good leadership on this team. I think we?ll find a way to weather the storm. We know it?s going to pass eventually. We?re building some backbone along the way and we?re learning some life lessons.?

This wasn?t the season the Argos envisioned. They lost their leader Ricky Ray to injury in Week 2. The team has struggled to find an identity ever since.

Neither Bethel-Thompson or James Franklin have been unable to fill the huge shoes left by the future hall of famer, leading to offensive struggles.

The Boatmen are averaging just 21.6 points per game this season, the second lowest in the league behind only the Montreal Alouettes.

The Argos have also yet to win a game on the road this season, making the matchup at BC Place even more daunting.

?They?re a great team,? said defensive back William Likely. ?They?re playing at home so they?re going to have a lot of momentum. They?re trying to make a playoff run. We?ve just got to go out and execute and play defence and play Argo football.?

Th Lions have only lost once at BC Place all season, tipping the scales in favour of the home team.

Newly acquired DeVier Posey will be playing against his former team for the first time on Saturday. Despite only signing a few weeks ago, Posey knows there is a lot on the line for the Lions.

?It?s an important game in our season for us,? Posey told BCLions.com. ?It?s a turning point to keep up in the Western race. A win is important, and that?s what I?m focused on this week. ?

The Lions playoff hopes took a hit last week with a 40-10 loss against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The game was over before the half as the Ticats led 30-3 after 30 minutes of play. Quarterback Jonathon Jennings struggled, throwing for only 146 yards and three interceptions before being replaced by Cody Fajardo in the second half. Two of those interceptions were returned for pick sixes.

The 26-year-old says he is ready to turn the page on a disappointing game.

?You can?t win football games like the way we turned the ball over,? said Jennings. ?That?s a big emphasis on my part. I think that we?re locked in and focused on what we need to do to be better than last week.?

The Argos narrowly edged the Lions 24-23 at BMO Field in their only previous meeting back in Week 10. Wilder Jr. had a big performance for Toronto with 18 carries for 91 yards and four catches for 49 yards. Lions running back Jeremiah Johnson kept pace with Wilder, racking up 117 total yards and a rushing touchdown.

That was the last game the Argos won. They have since dropped five straight. The Lions are 3-2 during that same time span.

?I really just think we?re a better team than when we played against them the first time,? said defensive back Otha Foster. ?Of course, we?re playing them at home. Our home field record is good. We feel we have a good game plan going in and we feel like we can take them down this time.?

While linebacker Solomon Elimimian is close to returning to the field after having wrist surgery, he will sit out Saturday?s contest. Quarterback Travis Lulay is still battling a shoulder injury after taking a hard hit in Week 14. Jennings will once again get the start.

By The Numbers:

5 ? Straight years that the Lions and Argos have split their season series.

21 ? Sacks made by the BC Lions defence in the last five games.

37 ? Average points allowed by the Argos in their last four contests (42, 36, 30 and 28). Toronto is allowing a league-worst 31.8 points per game through 17 weeks.

784 ? Team leading receiving yards for Toronto?s S.J. Green.

The BC Lions can?t afford to make any mistakes.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers picked up a crucial 40-32 victory over the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Friday night. A Lions loss on Saturday would put them further behind in the division with just few weeks left in the season.

This is the last game against an East opponent for BC. The final four matches on the schedule are versus divisional rivals, including two meetings with the powerhouse Stamps.

With favourable home field advantage and a 4-3 record against teams in the East, the Lions need to play to their advantage on Saturday.

The first step is taking care of the Argos.

Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+.

GAME RECAP

LIONS HOLD OFF ARGOS LATE SURGE TO WIN AT BC PLACE

VANCOUVER ? The BC Lions held off a late surge from the Toronto Argonauts lead by quarterback James Franklin to take home two points on Saturday night and keep things interesting in the West Division.

The Leos walked away with a 26-23 victory on home turf at BC Place as Jonathon Jennings tossed for 199 yards and a touchdown while running back Jeremiah Johnson rushed for 118 yards.

The game opened up with a hard hit that shook up the Argos lineup even more. On a completed over-the-middle pass to SJ Green, Lions Linebacker Jordan Herdman came through trucking, unfortunately ending Greens night.

Shortly after, a deep ball was thrown intended for Duron Carter who slipped during a one on one battle with Anthony Orange, creating space for Orange to pick off Bethel-Thompson for Oranges fifth interception of the campaign. Orange you glad he?s with you BC?

The ensuing drive took off with what we?ve all been waiting for. Jon Jennings getting into the action and throwing a 40-yard bomb down field that Bryan Burnham came down with on a 50/50 ball.

A few penalties later, Jennings answered the call from recent criticism on the half of his own General Manager Ed Hervey, by throwing his first touchdown of the game. The 14-yard dart up the middle to Cory Watson opened the scoring and capped a 5-play 73-yard drive, however, a missed convert kept it that 6-0 early Lions lead.

The Lions kept it going, putting the common denominator on display when the Orange and Black?s D applied all sorts of pressure on the Argos, backing them up inside their own ten, forcing them to concede two-points, extending the Lions lead to 8-0.

The next drive showed off what else Jennings had in his arsenal, running for a big first that ultimately led to Ty Long tacking on an extra three points to the Lions lead, making it 11-0 after the first frame.

The second quarter got under way with McLeod Bethel-Thompson and company earning their first three points of the game to cut into score.

On their next possession, Bethel-Thompson was hit on his release by TJ Lee who popped the ball upright for Lions? Defensive Tackle Davon Coleman to come down with. That was Bethel-Thompson?s second INT of the game, the first time he threw multiple picks in a game all year. The pick led to a Lions field goal, spreading the lead to 14-3.

No, James Wilder Jr., wasn?t in the game tonight, but Brandon Burks sure did look like him when he took off out of the gates for a 69-yard, 3-2-1 blast-off run. The run set up Bethel-Thompson and the Argos in great field possession where they capitalized on a flat pass touchdown to Llevi Noel, cutting the Lions lead to just four, 14-10.

Ty Long from long for three. You?d expect it from him with a name like that, right? Well it fits him because he hit a 50-yarder, making 17-10 on the board.

It was just about all Lions in the first half, the big man Davon Coleman got another pick with his sticky mitts on a driving Argos squad with just over 30-seconds left in the half. The pick set up a whopping 51-yard three-pointer from Ty Long, making it a ten-point lead after two.

The second half started like it ended, Lions dominating, protecting their den. Talk about pressure, how about from Shawn Lemon this time, who earned himself his ninth sack of the year.

The pressure did not stop there, no sir. The Lions kept it coming from all angles forcing Bethel-Thompson to chuck it up there when Winston Rose channeled his inner centre-fielder emulating what may as well been a pop out fly ball. That fourth pick from Bethel-Thompson ended his night in exchange for James Franklin who started the fourth.

Meanwhile, Jon Jennings continued to turn heads by one, throwing a 33-yard pass to the outside shoulder of DeVier Posey and then two, taking off himself for 33-yards on his own merit by foot. Then Ty Long took over, adding six of his own on two separate field goal occasions, 26-10 Lions lead deep in the fourth.

You?d think it?s all but done by how this one is going, not entirely? Que a Duron Carter touchdown. He broke the plane by being the first man back to the ball and getting his first as an Argo. The Argos would go for two, but failed on the convert, keeping it a 26-16 score.

Not long after that, the game got even closer. Ty Long could have sealed the deal, but a rare miss had Duron Carter taking it back to good field position with a minute and 42 to go.

With the Argos trying to get back into this one, James Franklin started to put together a drive and a half. On a clutch third down and twelve, Argos receiver Myles White earned the inches, keeping the drive alive. A few plays later, White notches six and just like that, a six-play, 76-yard drive made it a three-point game at 26-23 in favour of the Lions. Unfortunate for the Argos, it was just too little too late when their on-side attempt went to the Lions, topping off what made for very passionate 60 minutes.

The BC Lions took the ball game 26-23, extending their home record to 6-1 and inching themselves closer to a playoff berth.

The Lions will head to an enormous bout in Calgary when they face the league?s best squad, while the Argos host Hamilton to kick things off for Week 18 on Friday, October 12th.

ALS SET TO HOST STAMPS ON THANKSGIVING MONDAY

MONTREAL ? The Montreal Alouettes face a must-win situation on Thanksgiving Monday, when they host the Calgary Stampeders at Percival Molson Stadium in Montreal.

At 3-11, Mike Sherman?s Als are running out of breathing room; the magic number for Montreal is a single point either dropped by the Alouettes or gained by anybody in the West Division.

Dave Dickenson?s Calgary team is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum; at 11-2, the Stamps are four points clear with a game in-hand on their closest divisional opponent (Saskatchewan).

While it?s been a tale of two very different seasons in Calgary and Montreal, recent history states that Monday?s contest may not be as cut-and-dried as it looks on the surface; the Stamps have dropped just eight regular-season games since 2016 ? two of them at Molson Stadium.

It seems like ages since the Stampeders dispatched Toronto 38-16 last Friday, and Dickenson?s group is understandably raring to get back on the field and take another step towards home-field advantage in the West Division.

After surviving a few weeks of serious injury absences, the Stamps will get a number of key faces back on both sides of the ball.

Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell is excited about the return of centre Ucambre Williams and leading receiver Eric Rogers to the fold offensively.

?The last couple weeks it?s been the other way, (we?ve been) losing a lot of guys,? Mitchell told Stampeders.com. ?To see those two leaders that are vocal (is good), and Eric helps push the ball downfield and Ucambre controls the inside well.?

As for the challenge posed by Montreal?s decent defensive unit, Mitchell and co. know what to expect.

?They?re a team that tackles well, they blitz well (and) try to play the number game and never get outnumbered, so we?ve got to get out there and see what they do,? said Mitchell. ?We have to react to the things they do, play well and hit our shots when they?re there.?

Defensively, the Stamps have Ciante Evans back in their secondary and Cordarro Law re-entering on the line.

?Ciante back is huge on the back end, (and) it?s nice having Law back, he?s one of those veteran, older guys that?s been doing it for a long time,? said star Calgary linebacker Alex Singleton. ?Things happened the last few years here (in Montreal), that?s fine. We?re here to win a football game.?

Key to the success of Singleton and the defence will be stopping William Stanback and the Montreal run game.

?Like every week, you (try to) take the running out of the game (and) make them one-dimensional,? continued Singleton. ?They?re a good team, but if you can stop them and make a QB beat you, in any game, it benefits the D.

?He?s a big physical guy, he?s kinda like a (James) Wilder. He?s bigger, 6-foot-2, 6-foot-3 and 220. It?s not a small shifty guy ? he?s just going to try to run you over.?

It?s win-or-go home time for the Alouettes, and a win on Monday would still be no guarantee Montreal will have a playoff life to battle for come Week 18.

While the team did make progress in last week?s five-point loss at home against Saskatchewan, close is not good enough in pro football ? especially after the first half the Als suffered through this season.

?I felt like we did some good things, but you look at the scoreboard walking out of the stadium and you still lost by five,? quarterback Johnny Manziel told MontrealAlouettes.com. ?That?s the only thing that matters right now: Finding wins in the last four weeks of the season.?

While Manziel?s improvisational skills served the team well last week ? the Texas A&M product completed nine of 16 passes for 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns ? Head Coach Mike Sherman would prefer to see his offensive line shore up and allow the team?s offence to run properly.

?He?s forced to improvise,? said Sherman, ?and I?d rather we become a little bit more in the system as opposed to being in the backyard playing ball.?

The Alouettes will have some roster shuffling for Monday?s contest, with leading receiver B.J. Cunningham and offensive lineman Tony Washington both landing on the six-game injured list this week.

Washington?s absence will allow Luc Brodeur-Jourdain to make his first start of the season; the 35 year-old is relishing the opportunity.

?Football?s a team sport, and I know my role,? said the Laval product and 10th-year pro. ?It?s my chance to show, to my teammates and organization, that I still have what it takes to play.?

T.J. Graham, who was released earlier this season only to be brought back by General Manager Kavis Reed, will slot into Cunningham?s spot.

?It?s hard not to see B.J. out there, with how consistent he?s been throughout the year,? said Manziel. ?But T.J.?s looked well, (and) we?ve had a good week of practice.?

By The Numbers:

0 ? As good as Bo Levi Mitchell has been on the road in his career (29-8-2), the Calgary pivot is 0-2 at Molson Stadium.

29 ? Season-high points scored by Montreal in last week?s loss against the Riders;

53 ? Sacks allowed by the Alouettes this season, 19 more than any other team in the CFL. Montreal has allowed five or more sacks in each of its last four games ? the first time that?s happened in club history.

75 ? First-quarter points allowed by Calgary this season; the Stamps have allowed just 3.6 first-quarter points in wins, but 17.5 in their two losses. A quick start is clearly a major key to success against the league?s best team.

With the weather firmly turned towards fall, the importance of games in the CFL is correspondingly increased.

Calgary can lock up a home playoff date ? and take another sizeable step towards a first-place finish ? with a win on Thanksgiving Monday.

Montreal is playing for its playoff life, and even that is not guaranteed beyond the end of the first game of Monday?s doubleheader.

At this point, both teams want to continue building momentum: The Stamps for what will likely be another deep playoff run, and the Als for 2019.

As lopsided a matchup as it is on paper, recent history dictates nobody should write this one off.

Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+.

STAGE SET FOR ESKS, RIDERS IN THANKSGIVING SHOWDOWN

REGINA ? The log jammed West Division could get even more complex when the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders close out Thanksgiving Weekend at new Mosaic Stadium.

The Esks have lost four of their last five games, with the BC Lions hot on their tails for the final spot in the post-season. A win against the Riders would put Edmonton in a tie with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for third seed in the West.

Meanwhile, the Riders are in sole possession of second place in the division and are trying to lock down a home playoff date.

Needless to say, both teams will be hungry for a win on Thanksgiving Monday.

The Eskimos struggled in all three phases last week, falling to the Bombers 30-3 at home. Quarterback Mike Reilly had some uncharacteristic struggles in the loss, throwing for just 164 yards with no touchdown passes and two interceptions.

?It was just not good football by us offensively,? Reilly told Esks.com after the game. ?I?m the quarterback so that?s on me to get the guys rolling in terms of moving the chains and executing the offence. I have to figure out what to improve on and there?s going to be a lot after watching that film.?

Defensive lineman Jake Ceresna was a bright spot for the Eskimos in the loss. The 24-year-old managed to charge past the offensive line twice for a pair of quarterback sacks.

Reilly will have one of his top weapons back in the offence Monday with the return of Duke Williams. The CFL?s top receiver left last week?s game with a shoulder injury after making just two catches. There were initial fears that the 25-year-old could miss significant time, but the team confirmed earlier this week that the injury was not serious.

It will have to be all hands on deck for the Eskimos when they travel Saskatchewan. Head Coach Jason Maas says they know their backs are against the wall.

?We know what we have to do,? said Maas. ?A sense of urgency, absolutely. I think our guys understand? this is playoff style games down the stretch. We?re not guaranteed anything right now. We have to go out and play and earn our way in. That starts week-to-week and day-to-day. We haven?t done well enough the past two weeks.?

The Esks have only won two games on the road this season, while the Riders are 4-3 at new Mosaic Stadium.

Saskatchewan held off the Montreal Alouettes on the road for a narrow 34-29 victory last week. Quarterback Zach Collaros shone in the victory, throwing for a 394 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The 30-year-old received Shaw Top Performer of the Week honours for his impressive play.

Kyran Moore and Shaquille Evans both surpassed the 100-yard receiving mark.

The Riders have arguably been the top team in the league throughout the back half of the season, boasting a 6-1 record dating back to Week 10.

However, Saskatchewan is refusing to rest on its laurels.

?All these games out here matter,? Collaros told Riderville.com. ?They?re big games because everybody seems to be winning games, especially in our division right now. It?s a big one. We certainly know that, and you can feel it?. but once you?re out there and the whistle blows and the its first snap, its just another football game.?

It appeared the Riders might have top receiver Naaman Roosevelt back in the lineup when he was taken off the six-game injured list earlier this week. The team?s leading receiver sprained his knee in the teams close 30-29 victory over the Toronto Argonauts back in Week 15.

It turned out the move was made too soon. After a day back at practice, the 30-year-old was put back on the six-game.

?We were hoping he was a little farther along,? said head coach Chris Jones. ?If it was the Grey Cup, he could probably go out and play. But it?s one of those deals where we?re just going to try and give him some weeks to get more healthy before he?s able to help contribute to our football team.?

There was also some concern that Evans would be out as well after taking a hard tumble at practice and was not on the field Saturday. However, the Notre Dame product will play on Monday.

By The Numbers:

12 ? Rushing touchdowns by both Eskimos quarterbacks Mike Reilly and James Franklin this season. The record for touchdowns by a pivot in a single season is 14 by Doug Flutie in 1991.

13 ? Games in a row that Mike Reilly had thrown a touchdown before it was snapped last week. He has thrown at least one touchdown in 21 of his last 23 games.

23 ? Points given up by the Edmonton Eskimos last week on a total of seven turnovers.

36 ? Sacks this season by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. That is already nine more than they had all of last year.

CFL fans have a lot to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Monday with this all-west matchup that is sure to be intriguing.

Collaros has been on his game this year, completely turning around his W-L record after an 0-12 skid in Hamilton. The pivot ranks second in the CFL with a .700 win percentage in 2018. Last week the Riders racked up 502 net yards of offence, their best yardage total since July of 2015.

However, the Esks may have the most powerful offensive weapon of all in quarterback Mike Reilly. The 33-year-old will surly have some extra motivation on Monday after a lacklustre performance the previous week.

Turkey and CFL football. Does it get any better than that?

Kickoff is at 4:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+.

DEFENSIVE DUEL: STAMPS TOP ALS 12-6 AT PERCIVAL MOLSON STADIUM

MONTREAL ? Defence was the name of the game in Montreal on Monday afternoon.

The Calgary Stampeders walked away with a narrow 12-6 victory over the Montreal Alouettes in the first match of a Thanksgiving Day doubleheader.

Bo Levi Mitchell has struggled at Percival Molson Stadium throughout his career, entering the game with a 0-2 record at the field. However, the 28-year-old overcame his demons to help the Stamps capture their first win in Montreal since 2013.

Johnny Manziel?s first CFL victory will have to wait at least another week. The former Heisman Trophy winner threw for 250 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

Stamps defensive lineman Micah Johnson recorded five tackles with two quarterback sacks.

The Stamps managed to pick up the ?W? despite not registering a point until early in the fourth quarter.

The win secured a home playoff game for Calgary and officially eliminated the Montreal Alouettes from postseason contention.

Both defences held strong in the opening quarter as both teams played to a scoreless stalemate in the first 15 minutes.

The Stamps appeared to making progress on a drive that carried into the second quarter. However, Mitchell?s pass was intercepted by Chris Ackie at Montreal?s own 20-yard line to end the promising push.

The game was still tied 0-0 at the three minute warning.

It was Montreal that would get on the board first with a 44-yard field goal late in the second quarter to lead 3-0.

The Als got the ball back again before the end of the half and made the most of their limited time on the clock. Receiver Ernest Jackson tipped a high pass back into his own hands for an 16-yard gain. That play was followed by another impressive catch, this time by T.J. Graham, who managed to stay in bounds for a 25-yard catch.

Despite having momentum on the drive, Montreal ran out of time and had to settle for a 41-yard field goal by Boris Bede on the last play of the half.

Terry Williams appeared to provide a spark for the Stamps midway through the third quarter with a 81-yard punt return touchdown. However, the major was called back due an illegal block to keep the Stamps scoreless.

After struggling through 45 minutes of play, the Stamps finally managed to get on the board early in the fourth quarter.

Mitchell moved the sticks by finding Juwan Brescacin on back-to-back completions, and then running the ball himself to put Calgary in the red zone.

Terry Williams capped off the drive by rushing into the end zone for a six-yard touchdown. The successful extra point gave Calgary their first lead of the afternoon.

The Stamps added to the lead with a long 49-yard field goal by Rene Paredes.

Calgary missed a field goal with 25 second left on the clock to put the game away, giving the Als one last chance to pull off a comeback victory.

Calgary is back at home on Saturday to face the BC Lions. Montreal is on a bye week, and will return to action Oct. 20 against the Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field.

JEFFERSON?S PICK-SIX IN FINAL MINUTES LIFTS RIDERS OVER ESKS

REGINA ? The Saskatchewan Roughriders came out on top in a close 19-12 battle against the Edmonton Eskimos on Monday in a game that saw both defensive units dominate all day long. The Riders have now won three straight and have improved their record to 10-5.

Defensive end Willie Jefferson was the hero of the day for Saskatchewan, as he delivered the game-winning score with under two minutes to play after intercepting Mike Reilly and bringing it all the way back for a 49-yard pick-six. Jefferson also added five tackles and a sack.

The Riders? defence finished the game with three interceptions against Reilly, with Ed Gainey and Nick Marshall also making impressive plays to get their hands on the ball.

Both Reilly and Zach Collaros faced major challenges trying to find enough room to make a play in the face of relentless defensive pressure. Charleston Hughes recorded his league-leading 15th sack of the season for the Riders, and the team finished with five sacks in total.

The Esks? defence finished with two takeaways of their own, with defensive lineman Alex Bazzie stripping the ball from Collaros and defensive back Mercy Maston recording a fourth quarter interception.

Sean Whyte led the way with four field goals on four attempts for the Esks, while Brett Lauther made four of his six attempts for the Riders.

Collaros finished the game with 25 completions on 38 attempts for 259 yards, while Reilly completed 13 of 27 passes for 222 yards.

The Riders? offence worked their way down the field on their opening drive after a 24-yard catch from Kenny Shaw and a couple hard runs from Tre Mason gave the team momentum. A 17-yard catch and run from Marcus Thigpen set the offence up with a 1st-and-goal, but Edmonton?s defence stood their ground to force a field goal. Lauther knocked the 23-yard kick through to give the Riders the early lead.

Edmonton quickly tied the game after Reilly hit Duke Williams with an accurate strike for 30 yards to help put the team in position for a field goal. Whyte made the 32-yard kick to tie the game at three apiece. The 32-year-old kicker also added an 18-yard field goal on the next drive to give the team the lead after a defensive penalty on Edmonton helped put the Riders in position.

Saksatchewan?s defence applied constant pressure on Reilly throughout the first half, and the veteran passer was forced to scramble and gain yards with his legs in order to escape. Reilly led his team in rushing on the day as a result, gaining 57 yards on 8 carries.

The Riders? defence came up with a big play in the second quarter when defensive back Ed Gainey jumped in front of a pass intended for Kenny Stafford and made the interception. Gainey returned the ball 34 yards to midfield to set the Riders up with solid field position. Collaros dropped back and found Kyran Moore for a 21-yard pickup a couple plays later , but the Esks? defence stood strong once again and prevented the Riders from converting the turnover into points.

Charleston Hughes helped get the ball back for the Riders near the end of the opening half when he recorded his league-leading 16th sack of the season, but once again there was no room for Collaros to make a play against the stout Edmonton defence.

The Esks? defence would add a turnover of their own when defensive lineman Alex Bazzie got through the Riders? line to sack Collaros and force the fumble. Linebacker Adam Konar recovered the ball, and Edmonton capitalized with a 42-yard field goal from Whyte that gave the team a 9-6 lead before the half.

Saskatchewan managed to tie the game on their opening drive of the second half when Lauther made a 43-yard field goal, but the Esks answered right back after two quick first down plays from Williams set up a 45-yard field goal from Whyte, putting Edmonton up 12-9.

Both defences refused to give up any significant ground in the second half. The Riders added their second interception of the game when heavy pressure on Reilly forced an errant pass to sail into the hands of defensive back Nick Marshall.

Marshall returned the pick 16 yards to set up Collaros and company, and the quarterback quickly found receiver Shaq Evans for an 18-yard gain through the air as the third quarter came to a close. But the Esks? defence stood strong and forced the Riders to settle for a 50-yard field goal attempt that fell well short of the mark.

Edmonton appeared to be in position to win the game after defensive back Mercy Maston got picked off Collaros in the fourth quarter, but Edmonton?s ensuing offensive drive ended abruptly as a result of Jefferson?s impressive game-winning play. Reilly barely got the pass off before taking a hit, and the pass went directly into the hands of Jefferson as he took off down the field in full stride.

The play was challenged by Edmonton for roughing the passer, but the touchdown stood, securing the victory for Saskatchewan.

Week 18 will see the Riders will travel to take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers next Saturday, while the Esks will host the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Saturday.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 18
David Schwab

The extended Week 17 schedule due to Canada?s Thanksgiving holiday started with Winnipeg?s thrilling 40-32 victory over Ottawa in overtime on Friday night. The action shifted to British Columbia on Saturday night and the Lions squeezed out a 26-23 win against Toronto as a seven-point favorite.

Monday?s holiday doubleheader started with Calgary grinding out a 12-6 road win against Montreal as a heavy 13 ?-point favorite. Saskatchewan remained the hottest team in the CFL right now with a 19-12 victory over Edmonton as a 3 ?-point favorite at home.

Friday, Oct. 12

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (7-7 SU, 6-7-1 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (3-11 SU, 6-8 ATS)

Point-spread: Hamilton -7
Total: 52 ?

Game Overview

Ottawa?s loss combined with a Week 16 bye has the Tiger-Cats a game back in the East Division title race. They have already beaten Toronto once in a 42-28 romp on Sept. 3 as nine-point home favorites. The total went OVER 51 points in that game and it has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in their last five outings. Hamilton is averaging 29.1 points per game as the third-highest scoring team in the CFL.

The Argonauts? extended straight-up losing streak reached six games and it was just the second time they covered against the spread during this slide. The total stayed UNDER the closing 52-point line against the Lions after going OVER in their previous four games. Toronto is 3-1 ATS in its last four home games with the total going OVER in four of its last five games played at home.

Betting Trends

-- Hamilton has a 7-2 edge ATS in its last nine road games against the Argonauts and the total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings in Toronto.

Saturday, Oct. 13

Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-5 SU, 8-7 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-7 SU, 8-6-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Winnipeg -3 ?
Total: 53

Game Overview

Saskatchewan has just one SU loss in its last eight games with Monday?s win against Edmonton. This was the first time the Roughriders were able to cover in their last four games and the total stayed UNDER for the first time in their last six contests. Defensive end Willie Jefferson returned a late fourth-quarter interception 49 yards for a score in Monday?s come-from-behind victory.

The Blue Bombers helped their postseason plans with Friday?s win while extending their current winning streak to three games both SU and ATS. This followed a four-game losing streak (SU and ATS) in what has been a wild roller-coaster ride since early August. Matt Nichols threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns against Ottawa and, on the year, he has completed 64.5 percent of his 341 passing attempts for 2,633 yards and 15 scores.

Betting Trends

-- Saskatchewan has already won a home-and-home series against Winnipeg both SU and ATS heading into the third meeting this season between the two West Division foes. It won the first two meetings by a combined score of 63-50 and the total went OVER in each of those games.

Ottawa RedBlacks (8-6 SU, 6-8 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (7-8 SU, 6-9 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -3 ?
Total: 51

Game Overview

Despite Friday?s loss to Winnipeg, the RedBlacks still clinched a playoff berth in the East. The total went OVER 52 ? points in that game after staying UNDER in four of their previous six games. Trevor Harris played one of his better games of the year last Friday night with 349 yards passing and three scoring strikes against no interceptions. William Powell turned in another strong effort running the ball with 95 yards on 14 carries.

Edmonton is currently on the outside looking in when it comes to the CFL playoff picture in the West. Mike Reilly was picked off three times in Monday?s loss and he completed just 48.1 percent of his 27 passing attempts on the day. This was the Eskimos? third loss in a row both SU and ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in all three setbacks after this once potent offense was held to a combined 30 points.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has won eight of its last nine home games against Ottawa SU. It has a 6-3 edge ATS and the total has gone OVER in six of those nine meetings.

British Columbia Lions (7-7 AU, 8-6 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (12-2 SU, 8-6 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary-10 ?
Total: 49 ?

Game Overview

The Lions are right in the thick of things for a playoff berth in the jumbled West Division standings. With Saturday?s win, they are 4-1 SU in their last five games with a 3-2 record ATS. With the total staying UNDER against Toronto, it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in eight of BC?s last nine games. Jonathon Jennings continues to get the call at quarterback for an injured Travis Lulay on an offense that is averaging 23.6 PPG.

Calgary?s lead over Saskatchewan in the West sits at a game and half, so it still needs to win on Saturday to stay on track for another division title. There has to be some concern with Monday?s effort, but for some reason Montreal always plays the Stampeders? tough. This is still a team that is averaging 30.7 points per game behind Bo Levi Mitchel at quarterback while holding opposing teams to 19.3 PPG.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary beat BC 27-18 in early August as a 12 ?-point home favorite to extend its SU winning streak against the Lions to five games. The total stayed UNDER 49 ? points in that game and it has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings.

GAME RECAP

MASOLI, TASKER LEAD TICATS TO BIG WIN OVER ARGOS

TORONTO ? The Hamilton Tiger-Cats put on an offensive showcase in their 34-20 road victory against the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night, with quarterback Jeremiah Masoli throwing for 338 yards and four touchdowns. The Tabbies are now tied atop the CFL East with the Ottawa REDBLACKS after claiming their eighth win of the season.

What started as a back-and-forth game quickly turned into an offensive onslaught, with Hamilton pulling away and scoring 21 unanswered points in the second half.

Luke Tasker had a big game for Hamilton with four catches for 63 yards and an impressive three touchdowns, while Brandon Banks made big plays all night long with eight catches for 178 yards and a touchdown.

S.J. Green led the Double Blue with seven catches for 127 yards and a touchdown, and running back Brandon Burks made an impact out of the backfield for the Argos with 94 total yards and a 27-yard receiving touchdown for his first CFL score.

James Franklin started the game looking sharp for Toronto and finished with 292 yards and two touchdowns through the air, but the Ticats? defence stepped up with a fumble recovery and an interception in the second half.

The Ticats struck first on the opening drive of the game after Masoli put his team in field goal range with an accurate 23-yard pass to Banks near the right sideline. Lirim Hajrullahu made the kick from 45 yards out to give Hamilton the early lead.

The Argos answered back right away with a field goal that was set up by catches from Duron Carter and Llevi Noel. Rookie kicker Drew Brown knocked the 44-yard kick through the uprights to tie the game with his first career CFL field goal.

Masoli continued to look sharp on the next drive, finding Banks once again for a 36-yard connection. Banks displayed his game-changing speed and turned it up the field to gain 23 yards after the catch before being forced out of bounds. Masoli nearly got into the end zone himself two plays later on a 12-yard rush before being tackled by defensive back Matt Webster, and the quarterback completed a nice touch pass to Tasker for a four-yard touchdown to finish the drive off. Hajrullahu kicked the extra point through to give Hamilton a 10-3 lead.

The game?s back-and-forth start continued as soon as the Argos got the ball back, with Burks showcasing his ability to make big plays. Franklin started the drive off by finding Green through the air for 16 yards, and Burks took over from there by turning two short receptions into a 27-yard gain and a 17-yard touchdown. Brown made his first-career extra point to tie the game early on at 10 apiece.

Banks put the Ticats back on top with a 17-yard touchdown catch after a tough defensive pass interference penalty against Toronto put the team in scoring position. Defensive back Ronnie Yell was called for the penalty while covering Banks on a missed pass attempt deep down the field, and Argos head coach Marc Trestman unsuccessfully challenged the call. Hajrullahu kicked the convert to give the Ticats a 17-10 lead in the second quarter.

The Ticats added a point to their lead before the half after a big 63-yard punt from Hajrullahu ended up in the Argos? end zone for the single.

The Double Blue appeared to be driving to tie the game at the start of the third quarter, but Ticats defensive back Delvin Breaux made a brilliant play to strip the ball from Franklin as the quarterback picked yards up with his legs. Breaux scooped up his own fumble and returned it 21 yards to set up Masoli and the offence. But the Argos came up with a turnover of their own when Masoli?s pass into tight coverage ended up being tipped into the waiting hands of Yell for the interception.

Hamilton?s defence stood strong to force the punt, and the Tabbies began to move the ball once again on offence. Masoli threw a strike to Josh Johnson for 18 yards before hitting Banks for a short gain that set up Tasker?s second touchdown of the night. Masoli stood tall against the Argos? pass rush to find Tasker in the end zone for the five-yard score, and Hajrullahu added the extra point to extend Hamilton?s lead to 15 points.

Tasker wasn?t done there, as the receiver made an impact on the Ticats next drive with a 48-yard touchdown deep down the right side of the field. Masoli dropped the ball in perfectly as Tasker outran the Argos defender to the goal line. The extra point went wide, leaving Hamilton with a 31-10 lead near the end of the third quarter.

The Argos added a 21-yard field goal from Brown after Green brought the team into kicking range on a 43-yard catch and run, with 37 yards coming after the catch.

Hamilton came up with another second half turnover when defensive back Cariel Brooks picked off Franklin as the quarterback attempted to lead his team from behind. Masoli then found Banks for a 39-yard gain that set up Hajrullahu for a 27-yard field goal to extend the team?s lead once again.

Masoli attempted to add to the Ticats? lead by going deep once more, but the pass was caught by Toronto defensive back Marcus Roberson for his first career CFL interception.

Green added a 10-yard touchdown in the game?s final minute, but it was too little too late as the Ticats walked away with the 34-20 victory.

Week 19 will see the Hamilton Tiger-Cats travel to take on the Ottawa REDBLACKS in a crucial divisional matchup next Friday, while the Toronto Argonauts will host the Montreal Alouettes next Saturday.
