CFL Betting Notes - Week 14
David Schwab

There were quite a few twists and turns in Week 13 with the results having an impact on the playoff race in each division. British Columbia got things started by picking up a key win in the West with Friday night?s 26-14 victory over Ottawa as a slight 1 ?-point home favorite.

In the first of three games on Saturday, Hamilton closed the gap in the East by beating Toronto 36-25 as a five-point favorite on the road. Saskatchewan continued its winning ways by knocking off Winnipeg 32-27 as a four-point road underdog and Edmonton evened up its home-and-home series against Calgary with a 48-42 upset as a two-point underdog at home.

Friday, Sept. 14

British Columbia Lions (4-6 SU, 6-4 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (3-8 SU, 5-6 ATS)

Point-spread: BC -3
Total: 49

Game Overview

BC continues to bring up the rear in the West, but with last week?s win it is still in contention for a crossover position in the playoffs. The Lions have covered against the spread in five of their last seven games with the total staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in six of those seven contests. One injury note for this Friday is quarterback Travis Lulay, who remains in concussion protocol.

Montreal is coming off a bye after stunning Ottawa 21-11 in Week 12 as a heavy 16-point road underdog. This was the Alouettes second straight-up win in a row and they have now covered in their last four games. Earlier in the season, Montreal traded for quarterback Johnny Manziel, but it may have found its new starter in Antonio Pipkin. He has completed 64.3 percent of his 84 passing attempts for 762 yards through three previous starts.

Betting Trends

-- The Lions have won their last five games against the Alouettes both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in seven of the last 10 meetings in Montreal. BC started this season with a 22-10 victory against Montreal as an 8 ?-point favorite at home.

Saturday, Sept. 15

Calgary Stampeders (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-5 SU, 5-5-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Calgary -1
Total: 53 ?

Game Overview

Calgary?s breathing room in the West Division title race just became a bit tighter with the loss to its bitter rivals. It is 2-2 SU in its last four games and 1-4 ATS in its last five outings. The total went way OVER 50 points against Edmonton in Week 13 and it has gone OVER in four of the Stampeders last six games. Their points-allowed average has ballooned to 33.5 over their past four contests. Calgary trailed by 20 points in Saturday?s loss heading into the fourth quarter.

The Tiger-Cats have worked their way into a tie for first in the East with a SU three-game winning streak. They have covered in their last two games with the total going OVER in each outing. They are 2-3 ATS at home this season with the total going OVER in three of the five games. Jeramiah Masoli threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday?s win at Toronto and Hamilton piled up another 117 yards on the ground.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary has covered in five of its last six road games against the Tiger-Cats and the total has stayed UNDER in five of those six games. Back in Week 1, the Stampeders hammered out a 28-14 victory at home against Hamilton as 7 ?-point favorites.

Ottawa RedBlacks (6-5 SU, 4-7 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-4 SU, 7-4 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

The RedBlacks have started the second half of their season with back-to-back losses both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER in each game. They started the season with a 40-17 romp over Saskatchewan as two-point home favorites, but they have only managed to score a combined 25 points in those two recent setbacks. Trevor Harris threw a pair of interceptions in the loss to BC and he now has nine picks on the year against 11 touchdown throws.

The longest current winning streak in the CFL belongs to Saskatchewan at four games both SU and ATS. The recent sweep of Winnipeg with a combined 63 points scored has raised the Roughriders? scoring average of the year to 25.3 points per game. Much of the team?s recent success could be pinned to the play of quarterback Zach Collaros, but he left Saturday?s game against the Blue Bombers in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury.

Betting Trends

-- The Roughriders have a SU 4-2 edge in its last six games against Ottawa. However, the RedBlacks have covered the spread in six of the last nine meetings. The total has gone OVER in six of the last seven meetings in Saskatchewan.

GAME RECAP

DEFENCE DOMINANT AS LIONS DOWN ALS 32-14

MONTREAL ? A strong defensive performance earned the BC Lions a 32-14 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night at Percival Molson Stadium.

The BC defence dominated the line of scrimmage, sacking Montreal quarterback Antonio Pipkin seven times and forcing the young Als pivot into four interceptions. Offensively, Lions quarterback Jonathon Jennings was a respectable 19-for-30 with a touchdown and interception in relief of Travis Lulay, who left the game early in the first quarter with a shoulder injury.

Coordinator Mark Washington?s BC defence featured some gaudy numbers: Davon Coleman and Shawn Lemon each recorded a pair of sacks, Anthony Orange had two interceptions and Bo Lokombo registered an interception and a sack in the win.

A pair of fourth quarter pick-six touchdowns put the game to bed and added emphasis to what had already been an outrageously good performance by the BC defence.

The win was the Lions? first of the 2018 season on the road, and moved Wally Buono?s squad into the crossover playoff spot ? level on 10 points with Winnipeg, but ahead based on a game in-hand.

The visitors gained momentum on the opening possession, as BC linebacker Bo Lokombo rose above Montreal?s Ernest Jackson to intercept an Antonio Pipkin pass.

Lulay?s first pass attempt then went for a 41-yard completion to Bryan Burnham, setting the Lions up inside the red zone. The veteran BC quarterback suffered a shoulder injury on the next play ? an overthrown end zone shot to Shaq Johnson ? and was forced from the game.

Jennings came in off the bench and immediately zipped his first pass to Burnham for a 16-yard touchdown; Ty Long?s convert gave the Lions a 7-0 lead.

With both defences dominating, it took a key mistake ? Pipkin?s second interception of the day, this time to Anthony Orange ? to change the scoreboard, as Long and the Lions booted a 25-yard field goal to make it a 10-point game.

Led by some strong William Stanback runs, Montreal?s offence strung together a pair of prolonged drives that resulted in two Boris Bede field goals ? one from 46, the other from 29 yards out ? and sent the teams to the locker room with BC in front 10-6.

A booming punt single from Bede cut the Alouette deficit to three early in the third quarter, but Long and the Lions responded with a 30-yard field goal to make it a 13-6 ballgame.

BC appeared on the brink of adding to their lead late in the third quarter, as Ty Long set up for a chip-shot 15-yard field goal; Chip Cox broke through the line to block the attempt, and Tevaughn Campbell recovered the loose ball then sprinted 87 yards to pay dirt. Bede?s subsequent convert gave the Als their first lead of the night.

Jennings responded by marching the Lions into field goal range, and the visitors regained the lead two minutes into the fourth quarter via 45-yard Ty Long field goal.

The BC defence continued to dominate, and forced Montreal to concede a safety.

T.J. Lee then sealed the victory for the Lions with a pick-six on a Pipkin throw, as the Eastern Washington product made a perfect read, broke on a pass and took it 37 yards to the house.

Orange followed Lee?s interception up with an exclamation point, hauling in a gift from Pipkin and turning it into a 54-yard pick-six of his own. Long?s convert polished off the night?s scoring and sent the Lions home with an emphatic 18-point win.

The victory moved BC to 5-6 on the season; Wally Buono?s squad will now return home for a date with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-5) next Saturday (10 p.m. ET).

Montreal fell to 3-9 with the loss; Mike Sherman?s team will face the Bombers (5-7) in a must-win contest next Friday (8:30 p.m. ET) at IGF.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 15
David Schwab

In a shortened Week 14 schedule in the CFL, British Columbia climbed out of last place in the West Division with an important 32-14 victory against Montreal on Friday as a three-point road favorite.

Saturday?s doubleheader of betting action north of the border started with Calgary rolling over Hamilton 43-28 as a slight 2 ?-point favorite on the road. Later that night, Ottawa regained first place in the East Division with a 30-25 upset against Saskatchewan as a five-point underdog on the road.

Friday, Sept. 21

Montreal Alouettes (3-9 SU, 6-6 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-7 SU, 5-6-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Winnipeg -10
Total: 52

Game Overview

The Alouettes? brief two-game straight-up winning streak came to an end on Friday with the loss to British Columbia. This was the first time they failed to cover against the spread in their last five contests. Antonio Pipkin continued to get the call at quarterback, but struggled to complete just 50 percent of his 22 passing attempts for a total of 95 yards passing while also tossing four interceptions. The only bright spot in that game was his 69 yards rushing on nine carries.

Winnipeg comes of its bye week with a four-game losing streak both SU and ATS. In the first meeting this season against Montreal, the Blue Bombers cruised to a 56-10 victory as three-point favorites on the road. They are 3-2-1 ATS in six previous home games this season and 4-3-1 ATS when closing as a favorite. The total has gone OVER the closing line in six of their last seven games.

Betting Trends

-- Montreal has a 3-1-1 edge ATS in its last five road games against the Blue Bombers and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six meetings in Winnipeg.

Saturday, Sept. 22

Edmonton Eskimos (7-5 SU, 6-6 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (7-5 SU, 5-7 ATS)

Point-spread: Edmonton -3
Total: 54

Game Overview

The Eskimos are three games off the pace in the West Division title race. They went into last week?s bye following a crucial 48-42 upset against Calgary as two-point home underdogs to keep the Stampeders within striking distance in this race. Edmonton has been able to cover in its last three outings and the total has stayed UNDER in two of those three games. It is just 2-4 SU on the road this season with an even 3-3 record ATS.

Ottawa has been on a roller-coaster ride for most of the season, but its SU 7-5 record is good enough to set the pace in the East. The inconsistent play of quarterback Trevor Harris is part of the reason for the up and down play overall, but he was on against the Roughriders on Saturday with 334 yards passing and two scoring strikes. The RedBlacks got a big effort from William Powell running the ball with 148 yards rushing on 18 carries.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has gone 4-2 both SU and ATS in its last six road games against the RedBlacks with the total staying UNDER in five of those six matchups.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-5 SU, 7-5 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (3-8 SU, 4-7 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -3
Total: 51

Game Overview

The Roughriders remain in the thick of the playoff race in the West despite Saturday?s loss. This was their first defeat either SU or ATS in their last five games. The total went OVER 50 ? points against Ottawa and it has gone OVER in four of their previous five outings. Zack Collaros got banged up in a Week 13 victory over Winnipeg, but he was back under center on Saturday night. He completed just 10-of-27 throws for 162 yards and one touchdown against two interceptions.

The Argonauts went into last week?s bye with a three-game losing streak both SU and ATS. They started the season with a 27-19 road loss to Saskatchewan as 2 ?-point favorites. The total stayed UNDER 49 ? points in that Week 1 loss, but it has gone OVER in five of Toronto?s last seven games. It is 2-1 (SU and ATS) in its last three home games as part of an even 3-3 SU record at home this season.

Betting Trends

-- Toronto has failed to cover in five of its last seven home games against the Roughriders and it is 1-4 (SU and ATS) in its last five games against Saskatchewan overall. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six meetings.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-6 SU, 5-6-1 ATS) at British Columbia Lions (5-6 AU, 7-4 ATS)
Point-spread: OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

The Tiger-Cats? three-game SU winning streak came to an end with the loss to Calgary and the total has now gone OVER in their last three games after going OVER 51 ? points against the Stampeders. Jeramiah Masoli did not have one of his best days passing the ball with zero touchdown throws against two interceptions. He remains the second-leading passer in the CFL with 3,786 yards in 12 games. He has 16 touchdown passes on the year with 13 interceptions.

BC continues to battle it way into playoff contention with a pair of victories (SU and ATS) in its last two games. The total stayed UNDER 48 ? points in Friday?s win in Montreal and it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in the Lions? last six games. The bad news from Friday?s win was quarterback Travis Lulay?s separated shoulder. Jonathon Jennings took his place under center and he completed 19-of-30 passing attempts for 180 yards and one touchdown throw.

Betting Trends

-- BC has won four of its last five games against the Tiger-Cats both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in seven of the last 10 games between the two. This will be the first meeting this season as part of an upcoming home-and-home series.

PREVIEW

MANZIEL RETURNS AS ALS, BOMBERS CLASH ON FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

WINNIPEG ? Two squads in desperate need of a victory will square off in the Week 15 edition of Friday Night Football, as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers entertain the Montreal Alouettes at Investors Group Field.

The Bombers have dropped four straight, sinking to last place in the ultra-competitive West Division in the process, and are now improbably behind the eight ball in the playoff race after starting the season 5-3.

Montreal, meanwhile, fell 32-14 to BC last week; the loss knocked Mike Sherman?s team down to 3-9 on the season, and two and a half games out of the final playoff spot in the East Division ? held by the Lions.

Winnipeg needs to stop its free fall in order to stay relevant in the West Division, while another loss for the Alouettes would all but finish their slim playoff chances.

The big story out of Montreal was an announced quarterback change early in the week, as Coach Sherman and his staff pivoted away from sophomore Antonio Pipkin in favour of the now-healthy Johnny Manziel.

Much was made of Manziel?s comments in the run-up to last week?s loss to BC ? he openly questioned whether the organization still believed in him following his time on the injured list ? but his head coach insists the change under centre was unrelated.

The reality for the Alouettes is the team is entering a do-or-die portion of their schedule ? and they know it.

?The mindset is to win. I?m not thinking about the playoffs or anything like that. I just want us to win this game,? offensive lineman Tony Washington, who will be playing in his 100th CFL game, told MontrealAlouettes.com.

Blocking for mobile quarterbacks like Manziel and listed backup Antonio Pipkin is a bit more of a challenge for Washington and the Montreal line.

?It?s different because they get out of their pocket while we have to stick to our blocks,? explained Washington. ?Usually, the defensive line runs at you, but when the QB is moving, you just don?t know what?s going on behind you. It makes it a little harder, but at the same time, if he can get outside the pocket, it means he can make things happen with speed.?

While Montreal will need to move the chains on offence, it will also have to deal with dual-threat Winnipeg running back Andrew Harris.

?I think the run is a big strong game for them,? said Als defensive back Tevaughn Campbell. ?If we stop the run, I think we?ll have a good game.?

The Regina product?s 2018 season, which only began in Week 10 due to injury, is off to a flying start: Eight tackles on defence, an interception and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown in four games.

?I feel like I did (have something to prove), just because it ended with a decent note last year and I wanted to come back strong,? said Campbell of his hot midseason start. ?(I) didn?t get an opportunity to do that, so when I came back halfway through the season I had something to prove.?

It?s been a tough stretch for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who have suffered through multi-score losses to Ottawa and Calgary before their most recent two-game sweep at the hands of the prairie rival Roughriders.

Despite the struggles of quarterback Matt Nichols, who has thrown seven interceptions against two touchdowns over his last three starts, Winnipeg head coach Mike O?Shea will stick with his starter this week.

That said, the Bombers understand they are not facing the same Montreal team they dominated in Week 2.

?Defensively? if you get (defensive coordinator) Rich Stubler in there and anybody who?s been around the league whose been around Stubler knows it?s going to take some time for the guys to understand exactly what he wants and how they are executing his plays and his system,? O?Shea told BlueBombers.com. ?They?re playing well now? certainly a drastically different team than when we played them the first game in Week 2.?

It has been a season of segments for O?Shea?s 31-year-old starting quarterback; between Weeks 6 and 10, Nichols tossed eight touchdowns against two interceptions ? nearly the exact inverse of his line over three most recent outings.

?I need to go out and do what I?m coached to do and help put this team in a position to win,? Nichols told media during the week. ?It?s not something where I need to make something that?s not there, what?s got me here is trusting my eyes, having fun and sticking to the script.?

As for the challenge posed by Montreal?s secondary, Winnipeg?s quarterback knows he will face a much-improved unit.

?They found a line up they like in the secondary, they do a good job with a lot of veteran guys back there,? explained Nichols. ? John Bowman makes a world of difference for them. Their front is different. You can see they?re playing better week in and week out.?

Winnipeg remains a team with a potent ground attack, with the most rush yards (135 per-game), highest average rush gain (6.0) and most rush touchdowns (15) in the CFL.

By The Numbers:

7? Sacks allowed by Montreal in last week?s loss against BC ? the most surrendered in a single game by a CFL team this season.

27-3 ? Winnipeg?s record when it wins the turnover battle. When the Bombers lose that battle? 0-14. Turnovers matter.

70 ? Tackles on the season for Bombers linebacker Adam Bighill, who is on pace for 100-plus tackles. If the 29 year-old eclipses that mark, he would be the first Winnipeg player since Khalil Bass in 2015 to do so.

81.8 ? Per cent of meetings between the two clubs since July 2013 won by the Bombers (9-2), who have won the last four in a row including a 56-10 beatdown earlier this season.

It?s Week 15, and that means we are entering not only the final third of the CFL regular season but ?must-win? territory as well.

While the Bombers could still be within range of BC and the crossover playoff spot after a loss on Friday, the optics ? a home loss against the league?s last-place outfit, a fifth on the hop ? would be terrible and send morale plunging further in Winnipeg.

Montreal, on the other hand, is quite literally in a must-win position: The Alouettes are running out of real estate to try and mount an unlikely late-season surge, and with Saskatchewan (7-5) and Calgary (10-2) looming on the schedule, it?s now or never for Mike Sherman?s team.

Neither team has tasted victory in a few weeks, and neither team can afford a loss on Friday night.

Something has got to give.

Kickoff is at 8:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS ESPN+.

GAME RECAP

BOMBERS BACK IN WIN COLUMN WITH VICTORY OVER ALS

WINNIPEG ? The Winnipeg Blue Bombers snapped a four-game losing skid with a 31-14 victory over the Montreal Alouettes at Investors Group Field on Friday night.

Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols finished the game with 256 yards and one touchdown pass while Kenbrell Thompkins led all receivers with 94 yards and five catches for Winnipeg.

Als pivot Johnny Manziel?s first start in six games was spoiled by the Blue and Gold, and his first CFL win will have to wait.

Winnipeg jumped out to an early lead on their opening series of the game. The Bombers appeared to find momentum quickly as Nichols connected with Drew Wolitarksy for a 19-yard gain on just his second pass of the night, placing the Blue and Gold in Montreal territory.

Als defensive lineman Woody Baron managed to slow Winnipeg down by sacking Nichols just a couple plays later on a key second down.

Kicker Justin Medlock salvaged the opening drive by booting a 50-yard field goal to give Winnipeg a 3-0 lead.

The Bombers got the ball right back after a quick two-and-out by the Alouettes.

Andrew Harris became the first running back to eclipse the 1000-yard rushing mark this season following a 17-yard run on the drive.

Nichols continued to move the sticks, finding Thompkins for a long 22-yard gain.

Montreal got into penalty trouble after being called for illegal contact on a receiver deep in their own territory on a Bombers second down. Winnipeg capitalized on the costly mistake on the next play of the game. Nichols made a short pass to Harris, who then bolted into the end zone for the first major of the night.

The successful extra point give the Bombers a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

A 41-yard kickoff return by Stefan Logan gave Manziel and company favourable field position on the ensuing drive. The Als managed to get on the board with a 47-yard field goal from Boris Bede to cut the Bombers lead to 10-3 after the opening 15 minutes.

The Bombers and Als opened the second quarter by exchanging field goals.

Looking to put more distance between the Als late in the half, Nichols slung a long ball to Darvin Adams for a 49-yard completion to put Winnipeg in the red zone. Kienan Lafrance capped off the drive by charging across the plane to give the Bombers a comfortable 20-6 lead heading into halftime.

Harris did not return to the game in the second half after suffering a lower body injury.

Looking for a spark, Manziel decided to show off some trickery in the third quarter.

The pivot handed the ball off to Eugene Lewis, who then passed the ball back to a wide open Manziel on the opposite side of the field. Manziel ran for 22 yards after the catch to put the Als just short of the red zone.

The risk payed off. Antonio Pipkin finished off the drive with a two-yard major to set up a 21-13 game heading into the final quarter.

However, that was as close as the Als would get.

Medlock pulled the Bombers further away with a 43-yard field goal, his third of the night, to give Winnipeg a 24-14 lead.

The Als got the ball back with three minutes to go, but Marcus Sayles picked off a Manziel pass to seal the deal for the Bombers.

Nichols continued to show off his arm late in the game, tossing a 42-yard pass to Thompkins just short of the end zone. Chris Streveler put the nail in the coffin capping off the drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak for the Bombers third touchdown of the night.

Winnipeg is on the road next week to take on the Edmonton Eskimos, while the Als are back at home for a date with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

CARTER FACES FORMER SQUAD IN RIDERS, ARGOS MATCHUP

TORONTO ? The Saskatchewan Roughriders and Toronto Argonauts are set for a rematch of last year?s Eastern Final on Saturday night at BMO Field.

It will also be the first time that Argos receiver Duron Carter faces his former team since being let go from the Riders last month.

News of Carter?s release sent shockwaves through the CFL. Riders head coach June Jones was vague when asked what led to the decision, simply stating that the team was heading in a different direction.

Carter played on both sides of the ball while in Riderville as a receiver and cornerback. The 27-year-old says that it gives his new team the upper hand.

?I?ve been in the ears of the DBs and the O-linemen and everybody,? Carter told Argonauts.ca. ?People are coming to ask me questions about certain tendencies and what they do. I know the coaches. I know the players. I?ve been there for a year and a half. That gives us kind of an advantage to know what they?re doing and be able to prepare for it.?

Argos head coach Marc Trestman made it clear that Carter would have to earn his playing time after signing with the Boatmen. The two-time CFL All-Star did not see any time on the field during the Labour Day Classic against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and was limited to just a few plays the following week.

It appears that Carter will take on an expanded role in his third game with the Argos.

?Coming from an offence where I wasn?t really getting targets and coming into this offence where they expect me to get targets and be that that guy, I love it,? said Carter. ?I love the pressure. I love the responsibility? it?s still a work in progress and everyday I?m getting better.?

Another Rider-turned-Argo that will be donning the Double Blue on Saturday is linebacker Jeff Knox Jr. The 26-year-old signed with the Argos earlier this month after being released by the NFL?s Tennessee Titans.

Knox Jr. had an all-star season with the Riders in 2015 with 112 tackles, ranking second in the league.

The new Torontonian says he is looking forward to facing his former squad.

?I?ve got a lot of good friends on that team,? said Knox Jr. ?They?re going to be fun to play against. I?m used to playing them in practice. It?s going to be fun to actually get to hit some of them.?

A big game from Carter and Knox may just be what the Argos need to shake them out of their current slump. The Boatmen have dropped three straight heading into their bye week, all against divisional opponents.

The team?s most recent loss came against the Ticats two weeks ago. Toronto failed to avenge a Labour Day loss, falling to Hamilton 36-25. Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw for 295 yards with two touchdown tosses and one interception. Armanti Edwards had a team-high 112 receiving yards, while linebacker Bear Woods led the defence with nine tackles.

The well-rested Boatmen will look to right the ship when they take on the Riders.

Saskatchewan has emerged as a top threat in the league in recent weeks. After a slow start to the season, the Green and White are 4-1 since Carter?s departure.

The Ottawa REDBLACKS snapped the Riders? four-game win streak last week with a 30-24 victory. Special teams were the highlight of the game for Saskatchewan. Marcus Thigpen returned the opening kickoff for a 97-yard touchdown to give the Riders and early lead. At the beginning of the second half, it was Kyran Moore that found the end zone on a 90-yard punt return major.

However, the Riders struggled to find a rhythm on offence. Quarterback Zach Collaros threw for only 162 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the losing effort.

The 30-year-old was clearly displeased when asked about the team?s performance.

?You watch the tape, you learn from it,? Collaros told Riderville.com. ?You try to get better as a result?I learned that we didn?t play well enough to win and we have to get better.?

The Riders and Argos last saw each other in Week 1 of the CFL season at new Mosaic Stadium. Saskatchewan took round one, defeating Toronto 27-19. Now, the series heads back to BMO, where the Riders? season was cut short last year.

Defensive back Crezdon Butler says that the defeat still lingers in the minds of the players that were on the team in 2017.

?It?s definitely going to be a playoff atmosphere for us [at BMO], just because that?s where we ended our season last year.? said Butler. ?It?s the next game, but the atmosphere is going to be a little bit different.?

The Riders know that the Argos are a much different team than what they saw in Week 1, specifically with the addition of Carter.

Jones says his team is prepared of the challenge of facing off against their former star receiver.

?We?ll probably have to put more than one [defender] on him to defend him,? said Jones. ?He?s a great player and we?ve got our hands full regardless. With their receiving core, there?s a lot of really good players other than Duron.?

By The Numbers:

3 ? Games in a row that the Argos have won when coming off of a bye week.

12 ? Return touchdowns this season by the Riders. That represents 44 per cent of their team total, the most in the CFL.

13 ? League-leading sacks by Riders defensive lineman Charleston Hughes.

416 ? Net offence allowed per game by Toronto, ranked eighth in the league ahead of only Montreal. Toronto opponents have recorded over 400 yards in seven out of 11 games thus far.

The numbers show that neither the Argos nor Riders have reached their full potential on offence.

Toronto and Saskatchewan rank seventh (321.4) and eighth (318.6) in yards per game respectively entering Week 15. Bethel-Thompson will make his sixth straight start for the Argos on Saturday. The 30-year-old turned heads in his first CFL start, throwing four touchdown passes. Since then, he has yet to eclipse the 300-yard mark and has had only one other multi-touchdown game.

Collaros has yet to exceed the 300-yard mark this year, and has thrown six touchdowns along with seven interceptions in eight games.

Bethel-Thompson now has multiple games as a starter under his belt and a new offensive weapon to work with in Carter. Collaros has struggled with injuries this season, missing multiple games during the first half of the year with a concussion. He has started every game for the Riders since Week 8 and appears to be settling in with the offence, an opportunity he did not have at the beginning of the season.

One of these quarterbacks seems poised for a breakout performance.

Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+.

CAT FIGHT BETWEEN TICATS, LIONS CLOSES OUT CFL WEEK 15

VANCOUVER ? The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are on the West Coast to take on the BC Lions in the final match of a CFL Saturday triple header.

The Lions hold the crossover spot in a tight West division and are looking to keep pace with the middle of the pack. Meanwhile, the Tabbies sit just two points back of first place in the East and are chasing the Ottawa REDBLACKS for top spot.

The Ticats have been bit by the injury bug on offence once again. The latest victim is star running back Alex Green, who has been ruled out to play on Saturday. Green injured his shoulder in Hamilton?s Week 14 loss and appears to be out long term. The 30-year-old has been placed on the six-game injured list.

Veteran John White will start at running back for the Black and Gold in Green?s place.

?I?m pretty excited,? White told Ticats.ca. ?I can?t say anything more about it. I?m just excited?.I?m ready to go.?

Receiver Brandon Banks will miss a second straight game with a groin injury. The Ticats also lost all-star receiver Chris Williams, who they acquired in the blockbuster Johnny Manziel trade, back in Week 11. He is likely out for the rest of the season with a torn Achilles.

Fellow receiver Jalen Saunders went down the following week with a torn ACL and will also miss the remained of the year. The 25-year-old had a team high 1,170 receiving yards last season in his rookie campaign and was on pace to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark again this year.

Head coach June Jones says that the team is trying to push through the injuries.

?Everybody healthy, I?d feel pretty good, if we hadn?t lost all our players,? said Jones. ?I feel very good that the guys have hung in and have played together. They?ve been doing the thing we?ve been asking them.?

The Ticats? three-game win streak was snapped last week when they fell 43-28 to the league-leading Calgary Stampeders. Defence and special teams shone for the Ticats in the loss. Linebacker Larry Dean scored the Tabbies first pick six of the season, while defensive back Delvin Breaux scooped up a fumbled ball and ran for a 31-yard major. The highlight of the game belonged to rookie Shakeir Ryan, who returned a kickoff for a 104-yard touchdown in his CFL debut.

However, the Ticats offence failed to record a major. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli threw for 210 yards with two interceptions.

?We have the right guys in the room,? Masoli said after the game. ?We?ve got the right type of character guys in the room to not let this loss beat us twice. We?re going to have a hard road test. BC plays very well at home. We?re going to get back to work, see what we did wrong and fix those mistakes.?

The BC Lions have also run into injury trouble. The Leos will be without starting quarterback Travis Lulay after the veteran dislocated his shoulder in last week.

?It?s football. These things happen,? Lulay told BCLions.com. ?I can say I?m feeling relatively good for the first few days out. I?m optimistic. I?ve dealt with it before. I can shoulder rehab in my sleep. That?s how I?m approaching it. It?s disappointing. It?s a bummer. All those things. But now I?m just focusing on healing as quick as I can and keeping the offence tight.?

Jonathon Jennings will take over the reins on offence for the foreseeable future. The 26-year-old replaced an injured Lulay at pivot in the first quarter of the team?s 32-14 victory over the Montreal Alouettes. Jennings finished the night with 180 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Bryan Burnham had a game-high 104 yards and one touchdown on eight catches.

However, it was the Lions defence that stole the show at Molson Percival Stadium. Defensive backs T.J. Lee and Anthony Orange both scored pick sixes in the final quarter. The Als offensive line was no match for the Lions, as Montreal quarterback Antonio Pipkin was sacked a whopping seven times.

Orange was named a Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Week. He says the defence is looking to build off the momentum from their dominant win over the Als.

?I want to get more picks,? said Orange. ?I know they [defence] want to get more picks. We?re all competing with each other. Everybody wants to catch everybody. The more opportunities we get, the more picks we?ll get?. I can?t think of a better group of defensive backs in the league than what we have here.?

The Lions defence has stepped up in the absence of all-star linebacker Solomon Elimimian, who underwent wrist surgery back in July. Head Coach Wally Buono says that Elimimian?s wrist was re-evaluated and that he is expected to miss another 4-5 weeks.

Saturday night will also be the first time that Lions special teams coordinator Jeff Reinebold will face his former squad. Reinebold spent five seasons with the Ticats as the team?s special teams and defensive coordinator before being let go in last season following the team?s struggling start to the season.

By The Numbers:

13 ? Number of sacks that the BC Lions have recorded in their last two contests.

59 ? Team-leading tackles for Ticats linebacker Larry Dean, ranking seventh in the league.

113 ? First-quarter points by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats this season, the most by any CFL team. In contrast, BC has scored just 55 points in the opening quarter this year.

232 ? Average yards allowed by the Lions defence in the last three games, the fewest by any CFL team during that span.

Masoli has a chance to make history on Saturday night.

The Ticats quarterback is currently tied with CFL legend Henry Burris with nine 300-plus yard games this season, the most in franchise history. Masoli can take over sole possession of the record with a big game against the Lions.

Saturday is the first game in a home-and-home series between Hamilton and BC. The Leos have been nearly unstoppable on their home turf this season and are 4-1 at BC Place.

The Lions have won four of their last five meetings against the Tabbies, but lost the most recent matchup between the team teams back on Sept. 17, 2017. Hamilton kicked a 50-yard field goal with just 10 seconds left on the clock to edge the Lions 24-23.

Will Masoli make it into the record books, or will the surging BC defence foil his plans?

Kickoff is at 10:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+.
