Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

? Raiders also traded with Buffalo for QB AJ McCarron; Gruden likes to collect QB?s. Oakland gave the Bills a 5th-round draft pick for a guy with three NFL starts. Oakland cut Connor Cook.

? Word out of Philly: QB Nick Foles will start the Eagles? season opener Thursday.

? Notre Dame 24, Michigan 17? Emotion outweighed execution in this game.

? New Jersey Giants kept four QB?s on their 53-man roster.

? Dallas Cowboys released veteran kicker Dan Bailey.

? With rosters expanding on Sept 1, A?s activated eight players Saturday, mostly pitchers.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a football Saturday

13) Oakland Raiders traded star LB Khalil Mack to the Bears Saturday, getting two first round picks in return. Consensus on the Interweb is that this is a good trade for Chicago. Teams also swapped four other draft picks; Bears got a 2nd round pick in 2020, Raiders got a 3rd.

This says that Jon Gruden has all the power in Oakland; GM Reggie McKenzie and owner Mark Davis were supposedly not real anxious to trade Mack, but they also weren?t close to signing him to a new contract, either.

Chicago quickly gave Mack a 6-year, $141M contract extension. After the trade was announced, Bears dropped from 100-1 to 40-1 to win the Super Bowl; Raiders went from 20-1 to 40-1.

12) Auburn 21, Washington 16- Huskies gained 398 yards, but scored only one TD; they were 5-14 on 3rd down, -2 in turnovers and missed a short FG. SEC teams are now 9-3 in their last 12 games against Pac-12 opponents.

11) Penn State 45, Appalachian State 38, OT? 11 years ago this weekend, App State won at Michigan, when the Wolverines were #5 in country. App State was a I-AA team then; they?re in the Sun Belt now, and was a 24-point underdog here- they scored 28 points in 4th quarter after trailing 24-10, but the Nittany Lions tied the game with 0:42 left and avoided the upset in OT.

10) Cincinnati 26, UCLA 17? 6:00 left in the game, Cincy led 19-17; UCLA had 4th-and-1 from its own 36 with a true freshman (backup) QB playing, and the Bruins went for it, threw the ball, and failed miserably. Poor start to the Chip Kelly era in Westwood.

9) Maryland 34, Texas 29? For second year in a row, Terrapins upset Texas as a double-digit underdog; this game was delayed a while by stormy weather.

8) Michigan State 38, Utah State 31? Spartans were favored by 23.5, but needed a 13-yard TD with 2:00 left to hold off the gritty Aggies, who threw for 319 yards and look to be an improved team this season.

7) I-A teams that lost to I-AA teams:
? San Jose State (-2.5) lost 44-38 to Cal-Davis.
? Temple (-14.5) lost 19-17 to Villanova.
? UTEP (+7) lost 30-10 to Northern Arizona.
? Kansas (-9) lost 26-23 in OT to Nicholls State.

6) Rutgers 35, Texas State 7? Bobcats? only score came on a pick-6; they had zero INT?s all of last season, which is hard to believe. Not sure I?ve ever heard of a team going thru an entire season with no INT?s. Bobcats were -15 in turnovers LY, -14 the year before, going 2-10 both seasons. Hard to win with terrible turnover margins.

5) West Virginia 40, Tennessee 14- Will Grier passed for 429 yards, five TD?s, as Mountaineers opened their season with a decisive win on a neutral field in Charlotte. Total yardage in this game was 547-301.

4) Illinois 31, Kent State 24? Huge sigh of relief from Champaign; Illini trailed this game 17-3 at the half. Total yardage was 469-453, not a good omen for the Illini?s Big 14 hopes.

3) Ole Miss 47, Texas Tech 27? Signing Day for college football is usually the first Wednesday in February; every year on day after Signing Day, I ask here why Texas Tech doesn?t sign more defensive players, and then in the fall, when their defense sucks, I ask again.

Last two years, Texas Tech lost eight games that they scored 30+ points in.

2) Buffalo Bills cut WR Corey Coleman, who they acquired from Cleveland this month; Bills now have $50M of dead money on their salary cap- next highest is Dallas, with $26M in dead money.

1) Cowboys? TE Rico Gathers was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession by police in Frisco, TX Friday, as he sat on the bubble to make the Dallas roster. No bueno.

Gathers played basketball at Baylor; not sure what else to say here, other than your job as a player is to give the team reasons to keep you, not reasons to cut you.

Somehow, Gathers still made the Cowboys? 53-man roster; we?ll see if he sticks.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-5 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-4 SU, 5-4 ATS)

Point-spread: Saskatchewan -3
Total: 54 ?

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers have lost their last two outings both SU and ATS coming into the first game of this West Division home-and-home clash. The total has gone OVER in both of those setbacks with the defense allowing a combined 83 points. Winnipeg is still the highest scoring team in the league with an average of 31.5 points through its first 10 games to help take the total OVER in seven of those outings.

Saskatchewan did what it had to do to get past BC last week and it has strung together four victories in its last six games both SU and ATS. The total stayed UNDER 50 ?-points against the Lions after it had gone OVER in three of its previous four games. One of the big reasons for the recent success has been the elevated play of Zach Collaros at quarterback. He thrown for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns in five starts this year.

PREVIEW

RIDERS, BOMBERS RENEW LABOUR DAY WEEKEND RIVALRY

REGINA ? Prairie pride is on the line as the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers meet at New Mosaic Stadium to continue the Mark?s Labour Day Weekend festivities.

There is always more on the line when it comes to Labour Day Weekend, but the standings make this matchup even more meaningful. Winnipeg and Saskatchewan are currently tied in the West Division with 10 points apiece, setting up a pivotal two-game series.

The Bombers are coming off of a loss to the powerhouse Calgary Stampeders, falling 39-26. The Blue and Gold led the entire game until late in the third quarter when the Stamps scored a go ahead touchdown. Calgary went on to run away with the match in the final 15 minutes, scoring 20 points.

Matt Nichols competed 29 of 44 attempts for 258 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Stamps had Andrew Harris? number all night, limiting the star running back to just 13 yards on seven carries.

?Offensively we?ve got to make more plays,? offensive coordinator Paul LaPolice told BlueBombers.com. ?We moved the ball at times, but they kept us from getting in the end zone enough. You have to score points against Calgary. We didn?t do that.?

The Bombers have now dropped two games in a row heading into their home-and-home series with the Riders.

In light of their recent struggles, Winnipeg has decided to shake up their receiving corps.

Rookie Corey Washington will make his CFL debut on Sunday. The 26-year-old is slated to start at slot receiver ahead of Ryan Lankford, who has been moved to the practice roster.

Fellow receiver Nic Demski played with the Riders for three seasons before signing with the Bombers as a free agent for the 2018 season.

Sunday will be the first time he suits up against his former team.

?I?ve had this circled on my calendar for a little bit now,? said Demski. ?I?m excited to get out here. It?s about time to turn things around for this organization. Two wins going into the bye week would be huge. It?s going to be a lot of fun these next two games. Obviously it?s a lot of tradition behind it.

?It?s going to be a lot of emotion behind it and a lot of energy.?

Former Rider turned Bomber Weston Dressler is questionable for Sunday?s bash. He was pulled from the six-game last week but did not return against Calgary, and is listed as a backup behind Washington on the depth chart. Dressler is fifth in receiving in Winnipeg-Saskatchewan Labour Day games, just 32 yards behind former Rider Jeff Fairholm.

Mosaic Stadium, both new and old, is known as being one of the toughest buildings for CFL teams to pick up a victory. No one knows that better than the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Riders have won 12 of the last 13 Labour Day Weekend meetings on their home turf.

?There?s a reason why it?s called home field advantage,? said Nichols. ?Smart fans understand when to be loud and when to be quiet. They can make it difficult on the opponent coming in. As long as you have everything ironed out with your communication on offence you can overcome it.?

After a shaky start to the season, the Riders have looked impressive in their last two games. Saskatchewan handed the Stamps their first loss of the season two weeks ago, and followed that up with a 24-21 victory over the BC Lions in Week 11.

It was the first game that the Lions dropped at home this season.

?We did enough to win the football game in a very tough environment,? head coach Chris Jones told Riderville.com ?It?s a place where nobody else has beat BC over there. They play very well at home. They?ve got a good football team too. I?m proud of our football team.?

The Riders shocked the CFL world just over two weeks ago when they made the decision to release all-star Duron Carter. However, the risky move appears to working in favour of the Green and White.

The team appears to have found their momentum heading into the unofficial start of the CFL season as the Labour Day Weekend approaches.

One player who knows about the Saskatchewan versus Winnipeg rivalry well is receiver Naaman Roosevelt, who will be competing in his fourth Labour Day Classic.

?It?s always exciting to go out and play, especially against them because these games are always physical,? said Roosevlet. ?There?s going to be a lot of talking, a lot of trash talking? we know we have to bring our A-game because they?re going to bring their A-game.?

Look for defensive lineman Charleston Hughes to continue his dominance on Sunday?s big stage. The 34-year-old has recorded a sack in his last seven games and was named one of the Shaw CFL Top Performers for the month of August. Hughes is dominating the league with 12 sacks.

7 ? Rushing touchdowns this season by Andrew Harris, the most by any running back and second in the league behind only Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly.

12 ? League leading sacks for Riders defensive lineman Charleston Hughes. Seven players are tied for second, way back of Hughes, with five.

62- The number of times that the Riders defence has forced opponents into a 2-and-out situation, the most in the league.

310.6 ? Average net offence given up by the Riders defence per game, second best to only the Calgary Stampeders.

Labour Day Weekend has not been kind to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Riders defeated the Bombers 38-24 last season in a win that saw Saskatchewan dominate from the start. The Riders scored a whopping 34 points in the first quarter and never looked back. Three Riders receivers (Roosevelt, Carter and Bakari Grant), racked up over 100 yards.

The Bombers most recent Labour Day Weekend win was in 2016. However, Winnipeg dropped 11 straight Labour Day games to Saskatchewan prior to the victory.

Will 2018 see a changing of the tides and mark the start of Labour Day success for Winnipeg? Or will Saskatchewan continue to bully the Bombers?

Kickoff is at 3:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+.

GAME RECAP

MARSHALL, THIGPEN LEAD RIDERS PAST BOMBERS IN LABOUR DAY CLASSIC

REGINA ? Marcus Thigpen?s 25-yard touchdown grab a minute into the fourth quarter wound up being the difference, as the Saskatchewan Roughriders held on for a 31-23 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Sunday afternoon at new Mosaic Stadium.

The victory was the Riders? 13th in the last 14 tries in the annual Labour Day Classic against Winnipeg, as the arch-rivals switched leads four different times in a thrilling back-and-forth affair in front of 33,350 fans in Regina.

Versatile defensive back Nick Marshall scored twice on quarterback sneaks, including the insurance marker with 1:06 remaining, as the Riders? offence overcame a sluggish first half in which they compiled just 97 net yards and eight first downs.

Zach Collaros finished the game with 250 yards on 18-of-30 passing with a touchdown and an interception, with Thigpen adding 55 yards on the ground and another 37 through the air. Rookie receiver/returner Kyran Moore also scored on a 65-yard punt return touchdown.

Bombers running back and league-leading rusher Andrew Harris ran for a game-high 158 yards, including 103 in the first half alone, while Matt Nichols and Chris Streveler each threw a touchdown pass in a losing effort. Nichols also threw two interceptions, finishing the game 14-of-26 for 166 yards.

The win was the third straight for the Green and White, who move to 6-4 on the season and take sole possession of third in the West.

With Riders fans already turning up the decibel level after opening kickoff, Nichols couldn?t quiet the raucous home crowd when his pass into tight coverage was deflected and intercepted by Riders defensive back Matt Elam. The former NFL first round pick was finally pushed out of bounds at the one-yard-line, setting up the easy touchdown plunge for Marshall, the converted defensive back, to give the Riders a 7-0 lead just 2:54 into the game.

After knocking down a 50-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3, Bombers kicker Justin Medlock had his second attempt of the afternoon blocked when the ball?s forward motion was impeded by the outstretched hand of defensive tackle Zack Evans.

However, the Bombers continued to respond favourably following the early hiccough, with Harris providing the spark on a 15-yard catch on second-and-12, followed by another first down run of 11 yards. Harris? presence no doubt had an effect on the Rider defence because on the very next play, Nichols went play action before spotting a wide open Kenbrell Thompkins and hitting him in stride.

Thompkins? 31-yard score marked the first of his career in the three-down game, putting the Bombers ahead 10-7 and, for the first time all afternoon, quieting the home faithful.

For the Riders, the defence and special teams shouldered the load in the first half of Sunday?s Labour Day Classic. Though the offence would go 2-for-9 on second-down conversions through the first 30 minutes, it was rookie return man Moore making up for it, fielding Medlock?s punt at the Rider 45, finding a crease and sprinting untouched for a 65-yard punt return touchdown, putting the Riders back in front 14-10.

Once again it was Harris answering the bell. The Bombers running back strutted his way through an arm tackle on the way to a 25-yard run, followed by first downs from nationals Nic Demski and Kienan LaFrance.

A couple of plays later, after a sneak to pick up a first down by Chris Streveler, the Bombers? short-yardage pivot stayed on the field and found a tip-toeing Darvin Adams for a 10-yard touchdown in the back corner of the end zone, restoring the visitors? lead going into the half.

Through 30 minutes the Riders struggled to maintain possessions, accumulating under 100 yards of offence and just eight first downs. The Bombers, meanwhile, got to a usually-stout Rider run defence, led by Harris? 105 yards on the ground. Saskatchewan went into the game allowing 78.3 rushing yards per game, good for second in the CFL.

In the second half the Riders showed marked improvement in both of those aspects. The offence perked up right away, sustaining a couple of long drives and exchanging field goals with Winnipeg, making it 20-17 for the road team going into the fourth.

Already settling into a second-half rhythm, Collaros stayed hot in the fourth quarter. The Riders? pivot converted three consecutive first downs to Moore, Naaman Roosevelt and Shaq Evans, then, on a second-and-six, found the speedy Thigpen behind defenders for a 25-yard touchdown.

Thigpen?s grab marked the fourth lead change of the game, giving Saskatchewan a 24-20 lead early in the game?s final frame.

Medlock?s third field goal of the day cut the Riders? deficit to a single point with 7:37 left in the game, and the two teams continued exchanging punts after that.

The Riders? biggest drive of the game may have come when it was needed most. With a narrow one-point cushion, Collaros connected with rookie standout Jordan Williams-Lambert on the deep ball, eventually setting up Marshall?s second touchdown of the game on another one-yard plunge.

The Bombers had one more chance to reply, but Nichols? pass was intercepted by a leaping Ed Gainey, the second pick thrown by the veteran pivot, to clinch the Riders? sixth victory of the season.

Roosevelt had a game-high seven catches for 86 yards for the Riders, including a 27-yard pickup on the late scoring drive. Tre Mason was mostly held in check but did find some space late, finishing with 35 yards on eight carries.

Charleston Hughes padded his gaping lead over the rest of the field in the sack race, securing his 13th of the season. Makana Henry and Willie Jefferson also had sacks for the Riders.

Bombers newcomer Gerald Rivers had a sack ? the only sack of the game on Zach Collaros ? in his first game wearing Blue and Gold. Rivers joined the team this week after being released by the Eskimos earlier.

The Riders could have done more damage late in the game, with the ball inside the Bombers? 10-yard-line inside the last half minute, but opted to take a knee instead. The clubs will meet two more times this year, therefore head to head points aren?t likely to come into play should they tie in the standings.

With the win, the Riders pull a full two points clear of the Bombers for third in the highly-competitive CFL West Division with a game in hand. The two teams will do it again on Saturday in the annual Banjo Bowl on Sept. 8 in Winnipeg.

Edmonton Eskimos (6-4 SU, 4-6 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (8-1 SU, 6-3 ATS)

Point-spread: Calgary -6 ?
Total: 53

Game Overview

The Eskimos have a golden opportunity to make things interesting out West over the next two weeks in this home-and-home series. Edmonton has a pair of losses (SU and ATS) in its last three games and concerns with a shaky defense have once gain plagued this team. The defense is allowing an average of 24.7 points per game and that average as crept up to 26.7 points in the last three contests.

Calgary quickly got back to its winning ways following a stunning loss to Saskatchewan in Week 10. With the 13-point victory against the Blue Bombers, the Stampeders have won seven of eight games by double figures. The total has gone OVER in three of their last four games with an average of 31.8 points scored after it had stayed UNDER in their first five contests this season.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary has a 9-1 SU record in its last 10 games against the Eskimos at home and it has covered the spread in five of the last seven meetings on its home field. The total has gone OVER in five of the last seven meetings overall.

Toronto Argonauts (3-6 SU, 4-5 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-5 SU, 3-5-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Hamilton -7 ?
Total: 52

Game Overview

Toronto has turned to McLeod Bethel-Thompson has its new starting quarterback. Heading into the second half of the season, it decided to add veteran wide receiver Duron Carter to the mix after he was recently released by Saskatchewan. The Argonauts are going to need all the help they can get coming off that unexpected loss to Montreal. Bethel-Thompson did throw for 296 yards and one touchdown in last Friday?s game.

The Tiger-Cats are 2-4 SU in their last six games with a costly 1-4-1 mark ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their first nine games heading into the opener of this East Division home-and-home tilt. Hamilton is an even 2-2 SU at home this season and it has failed to cover in three of those four games. In last Thursday?s squeaker against the Eskimos, Jeramiah Masoli put the ball up 44 times with 27 completions for 419 yards and one score. He was also picked off twice.

Betting Trends

-- Hamilton has a SU 7-3 edge over Toronto in the last 10 meetings of this East Division matchup and it has gone 9-3 ATS in the last 12 games between the two. The total has gone OVER in four of the last six matchups.

WESTERN POWERHOUSES CLASH IN LABOUR DAY CLASSIC

CALGARY ? The Battle of Alberta reignites Monday afternoon in Calgary, where the first-place Stampeders will entertain the second-place Edmonton Eskimos in the annual Labour Day Classic.

The Stampeders are fresh off a statement victory over Winnipeg last week; at 8-1, Calgary could take a stranglehold in the West Division early in the second half of the season, beginning with Monday?s contest.

Edmonton, meanwhile, is coming off a disappointing defeat in Hamilton and at 6-4 runs the risk of falling back into the logjam that is the middle of the West Division standings.

Monday?s game is the start of a massively important home-and-home series between the provincial rivals, and with the sheer number of playmakers on both sides of the football, fans will be in for a treat.

Mike Reilly and the Edmonton Eskimos failed to score a single point in the second half of last Thursday?s 25-24 loss to the Ticats.

Needless to say, that output is unacceptable for a team with goals as ambitious and talent as elite as Edmonton?s ? and Reilly is the first person to admit it.

?You?ve gotta take care of business on your side of the ball. We have faith in our defence, but we can make it easier on them by being on the field more than we were last game,? Reilly told Esks.com. ?We were?t nearly good enough last week.

?Playing against Bo (Levi Mitchell) and his offence, and (Dave) Dickenson gameplans really well?you give them enough opportunities, success happens for them.?

Consistency and discipline have been buzz words around Esks camp since virtually Week 1, with the team constantly battling themselves ? Edmonton ranks last in penalties (101) and penalty yards (1,065) ? through the first half of the season.

?We?ve had a lot of games where we?ve had stretches of really good football, but also not good football in the same game,? explained Reilly. ?Consistency is the key, especially when you play against good teams. (Calgary)?s very disciplined, a team that doesn?t hurt themselves. If you?re going to beat them, you have to play four quarters of football.?

Edmonton receiver Derel Walker ripped off a 104-yard touchdown against the Stamps two years ago, and is hoping to bring another dynamic play to this year?s edition of the Battle of Alberta.

?It?s the intensity of the game, intensity of the week of practice, and going on the bus three hours down the road to play a great opponent,? said Walker. ?It?s something that gets you going ? if this rivalry doesn?t get you going, you shouldn?t be playing the game.?

The importance of getting back in the win column ? especially against the high-flying Stamps ? is lost on nobody on the Edmonton side of the matchup.

?It?d be great for us,? said Walker. ?I don?t think we?ve won in Calgary in quite some time, and we want to get back to Eskimo football and do what we?ve done in the past, which is winning.?

The Stampeders put out a statement to the rest of the CFL with a downright dominant second-half performance against the Bombers in Week 11: Calgary is still the team to beat, the loss in Regina had been flushed, and Dave Dickenson?s team will make you look foolish at the slightest opportunity.

It?s the killer instinct which has defined the last two-and-a-half seasons in Cowtown ? dominant through the regular season and early stages of the playoffs, only to somehow falter at the end.

?This is an important step for us in going in the right direction,? offensive lineman Derek Dennis told Stampeders.com. ?Edmonton?s always an obstacle in the West Division, (and) we know if we go out here and handle business at home, it puts us in a great position to do what we want to do for the year.?

Monday?s trench battle will be its usual vicious contest, but the added hype of Labour Day will make things doubly difficult along the line of scrimmage.

?Labour Day?s always the best time of the year,? continued Dennis. ?Games are really ramped up, the rivalries are a little more hectic, the atmosphere?s unmatched. It?s the biggest game of the year, (and you?ve) gotta be mentally prepared to handle the excitement behind it.?

The Stampeders? elite secondary is excited by the challenge presented by Edmonton?s star-laden receiving group.

?The ball?s going to show up,? said veteran Calgary defensive back Emanuel Davis. ?Duke Williams, Walker?they?re well-publicized, (and) I?ve been in the league with Mike Reilly a couple years so I know how he works. Everybody knows the ins and outs of that offence, (so) it?s another chance to prove we belong and we?re the best.?

With their eyes set firmly on the final prize, the Stamps have enough veterans like Davis to know that Labour Day is when the season kicks into high gear.

?When I was in Hamilton, my old defensive coordinator used to always preach (that) the games get magnified around Labour Day,? remembered Davis. ?All the games on Labour Day (and) going forward are big games, and we?ve got to get every one of those.?

Calgary will make no changes to the roster which beat Winnipeg in Week 11, but did get some good news on the health front during the week as defensive coordinator DeVone Claybrooks was discharged from the hospital after a health issue related to diabetes.

While it remains unclear when Claybrooks will return to the sideline, he is happy and getting back to good health ? a huge plus for him, his unit and the Stamps family as a whole.

By The Numbers:

16.9 ? League-low points allowed by Calgary this season. The Stampeders also lead the league in opponent net yards (281) and have the best turnover ratio (plus-13) in the CFL.

25-8- Sack lead for the Stampeders against the Eskimos over the last six Labour Day meetings; Calgary shut out Edmonton in that department in their last two meetings (3-0 in ?17, 4-0 in ?16).

2013 ? The last time the Esks held a lead in a Labour Day game, with 1:19 to go in the 2013 edition. Since that year, Calgary has led for 270:39 of the 300 minutes of play ? the other 30-odd minutes were tied.

It?s go time in Alberta.

Jason Maas and his Esks team need to right the ship, and this home-and-home set with the league?s standard-bearer will go a long way towards determining what kind of second half Edmonton has.

Calgary, on the other hand, is on the verge of locking up the West Division; two wins ? even a split ? against the second-place team in the West would maintain the Stamps? sizeable lead and all but secure them home-field advantage.

Kickoff is at 3:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+.

TICATS AND ARGOS SET FOR CRITICAL LABOUR DAY MEETING

HAMILTON ? A rivalry as old as the Canadian Football League itself renews pleasantries on Monday evening at Hamilton?s Tim Hortons Field, where the hometown Tiger-Cats host the Toronto Argonauts in the first leg of a critical home-and-home series.

Both the Ticats and Boatmen were plagued by inconsistency in the first half of their respective seasons; Hamilton?s record sits at 4-5, with signature wins against Edmonton (twice) and Winnipeg, while Toronto?s 3-6 record includes a nifty two-game win streak that was unexpectedly snapped last week in Montreal by the last-place Alouettes.

June Jones?s Hamilton outfit walked Edmonton off via last-second Lirim Hajrullahu field goal, but it was far from a dominant performance and the Tabbies will have to clean things offensively to have success against the Argos.

Toronto, meanwhile, was left to answer tough questions after falling 25-22 in la belle province to the Als in Week 11; Marc Trestman?s team appeared to have rounded the corner with a pair of wins, only for the offence to stall and the defence to allow second-year pro Antonio Pipkin and Montreal?s unheralded offence 300-plus pass yards.

Monday night?s matchup is simple: Two teams ? probably the two which will battle for the second playoff spot in the East, with a crossover looking increasingly likely ? looking for a definitive surge to begin the second half of the season.

The film has been analyzed, the tough questions asked and the reality is the Toronto Argonauts simply did not play a good football game in Montreal.

As with any Marc Trestman-coached team, the Argos? loss last Friday has been flushed and the team is firmly focused on the challenge ahead in Hamilton.

?We didn?t have a good first half (of the season), so we?ve got a lot of work ahead of us,? Toronto quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson told Argonauts.ca. ?This is the start of playoff football, so we?ve got to crank it up and get going. We know they don?t like us, and we don?t like them.?

With the two squads separated by a single win in the East Division standings, all parties involved know the importance of Monday?s grudge match.

?There?s definitely a sense of urgency,? said offensive lineman Chris Van Zeyl. ?It?s heightened because of where we stand in the standings, it?s Labour Day, we?re just past the halfway point. We?re basically jumping into the playoffs.?

As for the varied weapons present on the Hamilton offence, Argos linebacker Justin Tuggle thinks pressure will be key.

?I think they?ve got athletes all over the field,? explained Tuggle, a second-year defender out of Kansas State. ?(They) like to spread the ball around, make you run and tackle them in space. We have to go out there and put pressure on them and make some plays.?

Roster-wise, receiver Myles White will make his Argonaut debut; the 28-year-old Louisiana Tech product spent time with Winnipeg during the pre-season, and prior to that was south of the border exploring NFL opportunities.

?Coach Trestman does a great job of keeping you patient and understanding the process. It makes it easier as a player, because you see the progression,? said White, the twin brother of injured Alouettes defensive back Mitchell White. ?It?s been a good nine weeks (since I played, but) I?ve been preparing, been here seven weeks, trying to do my best to get in where I fit in (and) learn from S.J. (Green) and Armanti (Edwards).?

In Ticats camp, the mood is one of excitement ahead of Monday?s Labour Day showdown with the regional rival Argonauts.

With plenty more than just pride on the line ? Montreal?s win over Ottawa on Friday threw a wrench into the East Division standings ? Hamilton is aware of just how important Monday?s game could prove to be.

?Labour Day?s definitely a big part of the season, and getting to that midway point. Obviously with the rivalry with Toronto, and our fans here, it?s a big game,? centre Mike Filer told Ticats.ca. ?You?re always watching what?s going on throughout the league, (but) at the end of the day, we control what we control.

?We do what we do, (and) if we go out and execute and play like we?ve been playing, we?ll be alright.?

One player to keep an eye on Monday will be Frankie Williams: The 25-year-old return man will be handling defensive duties at halfback in addition to the special teams.

?It?s a mentality thing, as long as you prepare well you?ll end up good,? said Williams, a Purdue product who already took one punt to the house earlier this season, of having two roles comes Monday. ?Take your time, you?re here for a reason: Believe in the play call, stick to your leverage, know the defence (and) play fast and physical.?

After spending time with the Indianapolis Colts in 2016, Williams has relished the opportunity to get back on the field this season with Hamilton ? and takes the responsibility that comes with a rivalry game seriously.

?It?s just another opportunity to play with the brothers?(I?m) looking forward to laying out my effort for the older guys and organization,? continued Williams, who is averaging 9.8 yards-per-punt return. ?It?s another game, but added intensity. The stadium should be rocking, and it?ll be Ticats all over the field.?

A familiar face will rotate back onto the offensive line for Hamilton this week, as Landon Rice ? initially dealt to Montreal in the Johnny Manziel trade ? was signed by the team this week and is listed behind standout rookie Darius Ciraco at right guard on the depth chart.

By The Numbers:

3:00 ? Four of the last five Labour Day Classics have been decided in the final three minutes, though any statistics associated with recent editions of the game should be taken with a grain of salt: Jeremiah Masoli and McLeod Bethel-Thompson have a combined one LDC start between them.

Minus-17 ? Combined turnover ratio between Hamilton (Minus-7) and Toronto (Minus-10), owners of the two worst marks in the CFL.

5,768 ? Pass yards Masoli is on pace for, which would be the largest total in Ticats franchise history. The current holder? Henry Burris with 5,367 in 2012.

They say the CFL season truly begins on Labour Day Weekend.

While the players and coaches who have been hard at work since May would probably disagree, there is little doubt the East Division is heating up at this juncture of the season in 2018.

Montreal?s won two games on the hop, one of the Ticats and Argos could put a real dent into the other?s season with a sweep of the home-and-home series, and Ottawa no longer looks like the untouchable behemoth it initially did atop the division.

All those points just ratchet up the importance of Monday?s game ? a contest that needs no added hype, but will have it this year anyways.

Buckle up, because Tim Hortons Field is going to be rocking.

Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+.

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend almost here

13) Pat O?Hara is the Tennessee Titans? QB coach; maybe you?ve never heard of him, but chances are, you?ve seen him in the movies or watched him play ball on TV. More likely the movies.

O?Hara?s resume:
1987-90? Played (backup) QB at USC; he was Todd Marinovich?s backup
1991? Backup QB for the Buccaneers
1992? Played for Ohio Glory in the WLAF
1992? Backup QB for the Chargers.
1995-2000? QB for Orlando Predators in the Arena League
2001-02? QB for Toronto Phantoms in the Arena League
2003-06? QB for Tampa Bay Storm in the Arena League.

Since his playing days ended (he was on three Arena Bowl champs), O?Hara has been head coach of four different Arena League teams, and for the last three years, was an assistant coach with the Houston Texans. Now he is with the Titans.

Despite all that, here?s where you?re most likely to have seen Pat O?Hara; he has appeared in five movies; he was Tyler Cherubini in Any Given Sunday, the backup QB who got hurt, which put third-stringer Willie Beamon (Jamie Foxx) into the game.

O?Hara has also been the football consultant on 13 different Hollywood movies, including The Waterboy, Invincible and the remake of The Longest Yard. Interesting career.

12) Monday night in Los Angeles, Mets? 3B Todd Frazier dove into the stands to try and make a catch? when he produced a baseball to the umpire, the batter was called out, but in the video, you can see a woman pointing to something on the ground.

Turns out she was pointing to the ball that Frazier didn?t catch; the ball Frazier shows the ump was a rubber baseball that was in a bag that Frazier landed on when he dove into the stands.

Weird thing about this is that is was the Mets? TV crew that uncovered this mistake. Makes the umpires look bad. You wonder if a rule change will result from this, as far as umpires being more aggressive in making sure the player actually caught the ball.

11) Fantasy baseball is usually fun; except when your team gets eliminated from the playoffs, which mine did 10 days ago, mostly because Jose Abreu needed emergency abdominal surgery, and played in only one game that week. Not good.

Turns out the surgery was for ?testicular torsion? which involves twisting of the spermatic cord, which has the effect of reducing blood flow to the affected testicle. Ouch.

From Abreu: ?It was one of my testicles turned sideways and was strangled. The doctor had to perform emergency surgery to save it. I never thought about it, but it was serious. The doctors they did a very good job and everything is good. They saved the testicle. I?m really glad and thankful like I said before for all the people who helped me and who were there for me. I feel very grateful right now.?

Thankfully he is OK, but why doesn?t stuff like this happen in the offseason?

10) Houston Texans have a different starting QB for the 6th year in a row- DeShaun Watson. The previous five?

Tom Savage, Brock Osweiler, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Schaub.

9) In the last 50 years, there has been only one QB taken in the first round of the NFL Draft who never started a game for the team that drafted him.

Rich Campbell went to college at Cal, wound up lasting four years in the NFL, all with Green Bay (1981-84)? he appeared in seven games, completed 31-68 passes for 3 TD?s, 9 INT?s.

8) Former NFL QB Jay Cutler is a bit player on the reality show Very Cavallari that is on the E! Channel and stars his wife Kristin, a fashion designer who has been on other reality shows and has had small roles in movies.

Cutler has a dry sense of humor; you can see why CBS was going to hire him to analyze NFL games LY before he made a comeback (for $10M) with the Dolphins last year.

7) ESPN?s field mikes are cranked up so loud for Sunday Night Baseball; every time a guy hits a medium fly ball it sounds like a clap of thunder that could wipe out a small city.

6) Baseball oddity; Tuesday night, Marlins walked Phillies? SS Mike Kingery intentionally his first time up, to get to the pitcher. Next time thru the lineup, they walked Cesar Hernandez on purpose, to get to Kingery. I?m betting that doesn?t happen very often.

5) From ESPN.com:

Over last 15 regular seasons, NFL favorites are 1,859-1,860-11 against the spread
During that time, over is 1,890-1,886-64.
Thursday NFL games; since 2003, favorites are 97-66-5 vs spread.

Looking at odds to win the Super Bowl, defending champ Eagles have the 10th-lowest odds. Not a lot of respect there.

4) RIP Burt Reynolds, 82, one of the biggest TV/movie stars of the 70?s/80?s. My favorite movie of his is the original The Longest Yard.

Back in the day, Reynolds was a running back at Florida State when the QB was Lee Corso; what a combo those two must have been. Bet they had a ton of fun.

RIP, sir.

3) Geno Crandall, a two-time all-Big Sky Conference guard at North Dakota, announced that he would be graduating over the summer, transferring to Gonzaga for his final year of eligibility.

One small problem; Crandall hasn?t graduated from North Dakota yet. To be a graduate transfer, you actually have to graduate.

If it takes him an extra semester to graduate from North Dakota, he could still bolt after the first semester and play for the Zags in the second semester. Crandall scored 28 points in a game for North Dakota AGAINST Gonzaga last season- he scored 16.6 ppg LY.

2) If you don?t think the NFL is still the king of American sports, consider this; in the heat of the baseball pennant race, with Falcons-Eagles the NFL opener Thursday, only four major league games were scheduled. Four out of a possible 15.

1) 2018 major league payrolls:
? Boston $233,752,429
? LA Dodgers $187,318,213
? Bronx $166,111,632
? Oakland $65,985,833

Go figure.

GAME RECAP

ROARING DEFENCE LEADS LIONS TO VICTORY OVER REDBLACKS

VANCOUVER ? The BC Lions snapped a two-game losing skid, but may have paid a heavy price in the process, losing their starting centre and quarterback to injury, as they defeated the Ottawa REDBLACKS 26-14 on Friday night.

Jonathon Jennings completed 10/12 passes with a touchdown in relief of Lulay, while receiver Ricky Collins Jr. recorded his first 100 yard receiving game, setting a new career high with 10 catches for 105 yards.

Odell Willis led the way for the BC Lions defence with three sacks, as they created problems for the REDBLACKS all night long, recording six total sacks and forcing three interceptions as Ottawa?s quarterbacks found no room to work for much of the game.

It was a rough start for the Lions, as starting C Cody Husband went down with a knee injury just eight seconds into the game, followed by QB Travis Lulay suffering an eye injury after a sack on the ensuing play. Husband did not return.

Lulay would return on the following BC drive, and appeared to suffer no damage to his vision as he wasted no time before finding Ricky Collins in the end zone for a Lionstouchdown.

The Lions defence made a big play of their own later in the first quarter, as DB Winston Rose took advantage of an an off-balance throw from Harris and grabbed it for an easy interception. Despite strong starting field position, an unsuccessful fake field goal attempt left the Lions without any points on the drive.

Both defences were tenacious in the opening frame, combining for three quarterback sacks and giving Lulay and Harris very little time to breathe under centre.

A punt single from Richie Leone got the REDBLACKS on the board early in the second quarter.

With Husband out of the game for the Lions, Lulay struggled to get on the same page as his backup centre, stifling the BC offence.

Lions DB Anthony Orange nearly had an easy pick-six after perfectly predicting a WR screen, but just couldn?t hold onto the ball and settled for a knockdown. But it wouldn?t be long before the Lions defence capitalized again, as DB Alex Thompson picked off Harris for the second time of the half.

The injury bug plagued the Lions following the interception as Lulay went down again, this time with a head injury after a collision with two Ottawa defenders. Lulay entered the concussion protocol following the hit and did not return to the game.

QB Jonathon Jennings took over for Lulay at pivot for the Lions.

A field goal from BC K Ty Long extended the home team?s lead to nine heading into the half.

The Lions D was the story of the first half, recording four sacks and three turnovers and holding the REDBLACKS offence to just a single point.

The start of the second half saw a change at QB for the REDBLACKS, as Dominique Davis took over for Harris under centre. Unfortunately for Ottawa, the change in process led to the same results, as Davis saw his second pass attempt picked off by LB Bo Lokombo, deep in REDBLACKS territory.

With a short field in front of him Jennings made no mistakes, gaining a first down before finding Bryan Burnham in the end zone. Jennings? two-point convert pass attempt to Collins was no good, and the Lions led by 15.

After a two-and-out with Davis at the helm, the REDBLACKS brought Harris back into the game for their next drive. Starting at the BC 45 after an illegal punt, Harris got back into his groove, finding Diontae Spencer for a 12-yard gain before leaning on RB William Powell, who accounted for six of the next seven plays as Ottawa marched down to the goal line.

Down 15 points late in the third quarter and facing 3rd and two, REDBLACKS HC Rick Campbell put his trust in his quarterback, and Harris did not disappoint, finding WR Brad Sinopoli all alone in the back of the end zone for the touchdown. K Lewis Ward?s convert narrowed the BC lead to just eight.

Ward would chip away at the BC lead even further with a field goal on the REDBLACKS following drive, as the momentum seemed to have flipped from the first half.

Long and Ward would trade field goals late in the fourth quarter.

Jennings and the Lions took over at their own 35-yard line and took their time on their final drive of the game, killing the clock with plenty of run plays and short passes. Shortly after the three-minute warning RB Jeremiah Johnson broke free for a 33-yard gain down the right sideline, putting the Lions inside the 10-yard line.

Just two plays later, Johnson would cap off the drive himself with a six-yard scamper into the end zone, putting the Lions up 12 with under two minutes remaining in the game, a lead which would prove enough for the win.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-5 SU, 4-5-1 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (3-7 SU, 4-6 ATS)

Point-spread: Hamilton -5
Total: 52 ?

Game Overview

Hamilton drew first blood in this East Division home-and-home series while also closing the gap with Ottawa in the standings. Hamilton?s defense did its part by holding Toronto to 221 yards of total offense.

The Argonauts have failed to cover in four of their last six games overall, but they are 3-2 against the spread at home this season. The total went OVER 51 points in Monday?s loss and it has gone OVER in four of those last six games. McLeod Bethel-Thompson completed fewer than half of his 29 passing attempts against the Tiger-Cats and he failed to get the offense into the end zone through the air.

Betting Trends

-- Hamilton has covered ATS in 10 of the last 13 meetings and the total has gone OVER in five of the last seven meetings of the East Division tilt.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-4 SU, 6-4 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-6 SU, 5-5-1 ATS)

Zach Collaros completed 18 of his 30 passing attempts for 250 yards with seven of those receptions going to Naaman Roosevelt for 86 yards.

This Saturday?s rematch suddenly becomes very important to Winnipeg?s playoff positioning in the jumbled West Division standings. Calgary Stampeders (9-1 SU, 6-4 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (6-5 SU, 5-6 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -3
Total: 53 ?

Game Overview

Calgary has not been as dominant in its last four games at 1-3 ATS after covering the spread in five of its first six games. The total stayed UNDER 54 points in Monday?s win and in seven of its first 10 games. The difference in the first installment of this West Division home-and-home was a last-second 43-yard field goal by Rene Paredes as part of his five field goals in that game. Bo Levi Mitchell did injure his knee, but he was back in the game for that final scoring drive.

The Eskimos have now dropped three of their last four games SU with the total staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH if four of their last five games. Edmonton returns home with a SU 4-1 record this season while going 2-3 ATS. Mike Reilly ended the game against Calgary with 250 yards passing and one touchdown throw against one interception. He continues to lead the CFL with a total of 3,546 passing yards and 23 touchdown throws.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has covered the spread in four of its last five games against the Stampeders, but it is just 1-6 SU in the last seven meetings. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last nine meetings in Calgary.
