TICATS CLAW BACK TO DEFEAT ESKIMOS AT HOME

HAMILTON ? The Hamilton Tiger-Cats take claim of the season series against the Edmonton Eskimos after a come from behind win, clinched by a field goal as time expired to seal the 25-24 win.

Despite falling to a 24-10 deficit by halftime, the Tiger-Cats defence held the Eskimos scoreless in the second half, allowing Jeremiah Masoli and the offence to claw back and take the win at home.

The Hamilton quarterback finished off the night with 419 yards and completing 27 of his 44 pass attempts. Although he threw two interceptions in the first half, his lone touchdown for the night came in a crucial time late in the fourth quarter as the Tabbies pushed for the victory.

Hamilton, coming off of a bye week, was hoping to run into a tired Eskimos team who faced a shortened week of practice ahead of their Thursday meeting, however, Edmonton had other plans after a slow start in the first quarter.

However, that wouldn?t matter after the Eskimos went two-and-out, opening the way for the Ticats to then march down the field on a drive that started on their own 27-yard line. Nine plays later, Alex Green found paydirt from 10 yards out to put the Tabbies on the board, opening the game?s scoring. Green finished the night with over 100 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Hamilton?s defence continued to limit the damage of the Eskimos offence, forcing another two-and-out following the touchdown.

Since the interception, Masoli completed five of six passes for 100 yards before throwing an incompletion to Chris Williams in the end zone, bringing an end to their drive and having to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Lirim Hajrullahu.

The Tiger-Cats doubled up on the Green and Gold in time of possession, coming two seconds short of ten total minutes spent on offence.

Edmonton continued to struggle moving the ball against the Tiger-Cats defence and would only be able to notch a 52-yard field goal thanks to Sean Whyte.

On the ensuing offensive drive for Hamilton, Eskimos? linebacker Chris Edward stripped Brandon Banks of the ball, which Josh Woodman pounced on.

Two plays later, Mike Reilly connected with Derel Walker for a 37-yard touchdown pass to draw the Esks even with Hamilton at 10-10 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.

Shortly thereafter, the Eskimos found themselves back on offence. On second down, Reilly connected with the league?s leading receiver Duke Williams for a 95-yard bomb to pull ahead of the Ticats late in the second quarter.

Edmonton kept their foot on the gas, even in the final seconds of the half. Vidal Hazelton drew a pass interference call, which set up a 17-yard pass to Walker for his second touchdown of the game. The penalty was one of two defensive penalties against the Ticats in the first half which combined for 57 yards.

The scoring drive covered 74 yards in just four plays.

At halftime, the two teams headed to the locker rooms with the Eskimos ahead on the scoreboard 24-10.

Reilly overcame a slow start to throw just shy of 200 yards by halftime and three touchdowns, while his counterpart threw two interceptions and 157 yards. Both quarterbacks, despite the contrast in their ratio, had very similar completion percentages, hovering around 71 per cent.

The second half started off in a similar way as the first ? with a turnover.

This time though, it would be Edmonton coughing the ball up on a fumble, setting the Ticats offence on the Eskimos? 26-yard line, resulting in a 31-yard field goal three plays later.

The rest of the third was a seesaw as either team?s defences refused to budge, as there would be five punts through the remainder of the quarter.

Masoli and the Ticats? offence faced a tough time in their attempt to claw back in the fourth quarter. An 84-yard completion to Mike Jones fell short after Masoli was unable to connect with a receiver on either of the two following plays, having to settle for three points with Hajrullahu?s third field goal of the night, narrowing Edmonton?s lead to 24-16.

The Ticats got hummin? to keep those in attendance on the edge of their seat till the end on the ensuing offensive drive for Hamilton, connecting with Luke Tasker for a 51-yard touchdown to bring the Ticats within two with 2:37 remaining in the final quarter. The veteran receiver hauled in nine receptions for 156 yards for the night.

A quick two-and-out by the Eskimos gave the Ticats the ball with just over a minute remaining in the game for Jeremiah Masoli to work with, and that he did.

A completion to Terrence Toliver and a large gain by Alex Green on the ground put the Tabbies in perfect field position for Hajrullahu to kick the game-winning field goal to push the Black and Gold ahead, giving them the win and improve to 4-5 on the year.

The two teams will get an extended break as they get set for their Labour Day Classic matches next week on the holiday Monday. The storied rivalry between the Eskimos and Stampeders will lead off the evening at 3:00 p.m. ET, followed by the Ticats and Argonauts from Tim Hortons Field at 6:30 p.m. ET.

PREVIEW

EMERGING PIVOTS LEAD ARGOS, ALS INTO FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

MONTREAL ? Two teams looking to climb the East Division standings will collide on Friday night in Montreal, as the Alouettes host the Toronto Argonauts on Friday Night Football.

At 1-8, and now three games out of a playoff spot following Hamilton?s win Thursday, the Als are entering must-win territory; Antonio Pipkin will get the ball under centre for the second week in a row, while running back Tyrell Sutton is sidelined with a lower-body injury.

The Argos visit la belle province on something of a hot streak, winners of two on the hop and right back in the playoff mix with Hamilton and ? yes, we are nearing the back nine of the season ? potential crossover Saskatchewan.

Journeyman pivot McLeod Bethel-Thompson and star running back James Wilder Jr. have reinvigorated Toronto?s offence in recent weeks, and the Double Blue are definitely trending up at the moment.

?We?re just trying to get better. It sounds cliche, but that?s what we?ve tried to do,? Argonauts head coach Marc Trestman told Argonauts.ca. ?We?ve certainly taken a good look at MTL in all three phases. Their energy on D, how they run to the ball?looking at their third and fourth quarter of the Edmonton game, you know we?re in for a good football game.?

Marc Trestman?s go-to word is process.

His football teams are always a work in progress, and going through a process in order to build something.

This year?s edition of the Argos, who started 1-5 but have since injected themselves back into the East playoff picture, is no different.

?Most CFL locker rooms are full of these kinds of guys,? said Trestman of his group of quick learners. ?They love football, they?re good listeners and want to get better. It?s a combination of us working together, making sure we go into meetings ready to stimulate them, give them the science and why we?re doing it, (then) their effort and love of the game takes care of itself.?

Undefeated starting quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson ? career record: 2-0 ? reserved his highest praise for his head coach during media availability on Thursday.

?Trestman?s a special mind and special coach,? said the Sacramento State alum. ?He?s taught me as much on the field as off the field?he?s very conscious about building more than a team, stuff that transcends the game and trickles into life.?

Part of the great environment around Toronto are the two legends in the quarterback room: Injured Ricky Ray and Hall-of-Famer-turned-coach Anthony Calvillo.

?One thing I lacked in my career is experience, and those two have a plethora of it,? explained Bethel-Thompson. ?It?s amazing to be around them, soak up the knowledge, see how they react in situations and pick their brains.?

The Argos defence will get a boost with the return of linebacker Bear Woods; the two-time CFL All-Star missed the first half of 2018 recovering from back surgery, then broke his hand in his initial return to practice.

?My first practice back with the starting D, I intercepted a ball, broke my hand and hyperextended my hip,? chuckled Woods. ?In my career I?ve had some hiccups along the way ? you?ve got to have humour and take it in stride.?

As great as morale is on the Argos side of Friday?s matchup, spirits are understandably lower in Alouettes camp.

Montreal has not won a home game since Aug. 11 of last year, and faces a three-game chasm between it and a playoff spot.

Starting quarterback Johnny Manziel ? acquired in a blockbuster deal on July 22 ? remains sidelined after going through concussion protocol, while running back Tyrell Sutton hits the injured list this week.

Sophomore pivot Antonio Pipkin will get the ball after putting in Montreal?s best QB performance (217 yards with a single touchdown) of the season in last week?s loss at Edmonton.

?I thought he did a very nice job in the game,? Sherman told RDS. ?He?s our QB. He had good practices. Did some things in the game that could?ve helped us win the game.?

As for his team?s defensive struggles ? the Als have surrendered 40-plus points in three of their last four games ? Sherman says it comes down to execution for coordinator Rich Stubler?s unit.

?They?re just not clicking the way we want it to click, (and) giving up way too much yardage and not having enough stops,? said the head coach bluntly. ?They practised hard, had a good week, and (then) we go into games and something goes awry. We?ve gotta play with maturity. Last week we showed a lack of discipline.

?We?ll do some really good things, then not so good things at times. Last week, down at the red zone, sack their QB, give it back because of a penalty. Sack their QB, give it back because of a penalty.?

The team released national offensive lineman Landon Rice on Thursday; the decision was termed a ?contractual, financial? one by Sherman, who insisted he had been happy with Rice?s play.

By The Numbers:

3 ? Number of quarterbacks who have won their first two starts for the Argos in the past 30 years. Kerwin Bell (1998), Trevor Harris (2014-15) and McLeod Bethel-Thompson (2018).

19 ? Losses for the Alouettes in their last 20 outings dating back to the middle of the 2017 season. Montreal has lost its last nine games at home ? tied for third-longest home losing streak in league history. (Record: 14, Ottawa 1988-89)

88 ? Point differential for Toronto between the first and second halves this season; the Argos are an abysmal minus-85 in first halves, and a respectable plus-3 in second halves.

7,678 ? Days since Toronto quarterbacks coach Anthony Calvillo last participated in a game at Molson Stadium as a member (staff/player) of the visiting team. That date was August 16, 1997, and Calvillo was a quarterback with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Both the Argos and Alouettes need this win. Montreal a bit more desperately than its visitors, but both nonetheless.

This is Game No. 10 ? the start of the back nine, if you will ? for both clubs and a loss Friday night for the Alouettes, who have a trip to Ottawa (6-3) looming next week, could be devastating.

Mike Sherman?s team has shown flashes of quality play on either side of the ball, but consistency has evaded Montreal and the group should have a do-or-die mentality for Friday?s divisional contest.

Marc Trestman?s Argos are trending in the complete opposite direction: The most disciplined team in the league, Toronto will have plenty of opportunity to climb the standings with seven of their final 10 contests coming against divisional opponents.

Two teams looking for that spark to kickstart the second half. Should be a fun one at Percival Molson Stadium.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS, ESPN+

GAME RECAP

PIPKIN, BEDE LEAD ALS TO LAST-SECOND WIN OVER ARGOS

MONTREAL ? Antonio Pipkin ran for two touchdowns and Boris Bede kicked a late go-ahead field goal, sending the Montreal Alouettes to a 25-22 win over the Toronto Argonauts Friday night in Montreal.

Bede?s 27-yard field goal went through the uprights with 1:10 remaining, while Argonaut kicker Zack Medeiros? 54-yard game-tying attempt hit the upright on the final play, helping the Als win their second game of the season in front of an excited home gathering at Percival-Molson Stadium.

With Johnny Manziel sidelined for the second week in a row, sophomore quarterback Pipkin continued to make the most of his opportunity in just his second career start, completing 22 of 32 attempts for 303 yards. He threw one interception while rushing for two touchdowns on quarterback sneaks.

Meanwhile, the Als? defence, after allowing 500 or more yards in four straight games, held Toronto to just 355 net yards and 18 first downs in a much-needed bounce back. Argos? star running back James Wilder Jr. was held to 29 yards on nine carries, while there were no late-game heroics for McLeod Bethel-Thompson this time, the sophomore quarterback held to 296 passing yards and a touchdown on 26-of-37 passing.

The Argos opened the scoring after settling for a 12-yard field goal from Medeiros deep in Montreal territory. But after Bede tied the game, momentum shifted in the Alouettes? favour when national defensive back Tevaughn Campbell stripped Declan Cross of the football following a short gain, forcing the game?s first turnover in the waning seconds of the opening quarter.

While the Als couldn?t fully convert on their opportunity, they would add two more field goals from the strong-footed Bede to put them in the driver?s seat with a 9-3 lead midway through the second quarter.

The Argos responded suddenly when Martese Jackson appeared to tight-rope his way along the sideline on his way to his first touchdown of the 2018 campaign. But the score was nullified when an automatic scoring review revealed that Jackson?s shoe grazed the white paint, marking him out of bounds near the 30.

It was of little consequence for Bethel-Thompson, who calmly led a five-play, 31-yard scoring drive, culminating in a crafty seven-yard touchdown grab by Armanti Edwards ? the veteran receiver?s second of the season ? to put the Argos back in the driver?s seat.

The Argos? lead would be short-lived, however. Not to be outdone, Pipkin, his offence at his own 52-yard-line, evaded the Argos? pass rush, bought himself some extra time and threw a strike across his body to Eugene Lewis for a 32-yard gain into enemy territory. It was the type of play Pipkin had made often throughout Friday?s game, helping the Als move the football in ways not previously seen throughout the first half of 2018.

Two more completions to George Johnson and Ernest Jackson set up a second-and-goal from the two, and Pipkin did the rest with his legs, getting around the end for the Alouettes? first touchdown of the game to vault them in front once again.

Pipkin?s late effort wrapped up a seven-play, 80-yard drive, giving Montreal a 15-10 halftime lead and concluding an impressive 30 minutes for the 23-year-old quarterback in his second career start, giving him 172 yards on 13-of-19 passing.

After barely amassing 170 yards in the first half, the Boatmen needed a change of course in the second half. Bethel-Thompson was more than comfortable steering the ship, leading the offence on a 14-play, 67-yard drive ending in a Medeiros chip shot to start the third quarter.

In stark contrast to a drive that took more than half of the third quarter to produce three points, the Argo defence turned the game on a dime shortly after. Pipkin?s first throw of the second half was too hot for the receiver to handle, deflecting into the hands of Alden Darby before being returned for a 46-yard touchdown, putting Toronto back in front.

While the first eight games of the season had seen plenty of ups and downs for first-time Argos defensive coordinator Mike Archer, his defence tightened up in the second half, not only scoring the team?s go-ahead points but also pitching a shutout in the third quarter, allowing Toronto to take a six-point lead into the fourth quarter.

However, it wasn?t meant to last. After a lengthy second-down conversion by S.J. Green was nullified by offensive pass interference ? a call that was challenged by Head Coach Marc Trestman but upheld ? the Argos had to punt and the Alouette offence subsequently went to work.

Argos defensive back Cassius Vaughn was injured while back-pedaling, and B.J. Cunningham took advantage, hauling in Pipkin?s pass before eventually being taken down at the one-yard-line. Vaughn was taken off the field on a cart and did not return to the game.

After the delay, Pipkin found the end zone on the very next play, scoring his second touchdown of the game on a quarterback sneak, though Bede?s miss on the ensuing convert prevented the Alouettes from reclaiming the lead.

With the game tied with 7:11 remaining, the Argos couldn?t muster any response on offence, having to punt the ball away right away.

Looking to prove he deserves another start, and with Johnny Manziel looking on from the sideline, Pipkin went right back to work with the offence. The sophomore pivot completed passes to Adarius Bowman and Eugene Lewis, then, after the 3:00 warning, converted on a key second-and-six to get the offence down to the 20.

While the Argos defence eventually tightened up, Bede?s go-ahead field goal left the Argos with just 1:10 on the clock and a three-point deficit.

Hemmed deep in their own end after some indecision by speedy returner Mario Alford, Thompson rolled out to his right connected over the middle with Edwards, who moved the Argos up to midfield. Two more completions to Llevi Noel and James Wilder Jr. moved them into field goal range as the clock ticked under 30 seconds remaining.

However, after back-to-back comeback drives for Bethel-Thompson in wins over Ottawa and BC, there were no late-game heroics for the Argos? pivot. Medeiros? 54-yard attempt with no time on the clock hit the upright, ending the Argos? comeback attempt and sealing a thrilling 25-22 win for the Als.

In his first start in place of the injured Tyrell Sutton, William Stanback had 53 yards on 11 carries for the Alouettes? offence. Cunningham led the team in receiving with five catches for 85 yards.

The Argos were led by Edwards, who had four catches for a game-high 114 yards and a touchdown.

There have been rumours from TSN?s David Naylor that the Argos are close to a deal with recently-released star receiver Duron Carter.

The Argos are back on the field for the annual Labour Day Classic on Sept. 3 in Hamilton as they look to claw back in the race for second in the East. On the other hand, the Als return to action in the nation?s capital on Friday, Aug. 31, as they look for a second straight win in a matchup with the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-4 SU, 5-3-1 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS)

Point-spread: Calgary -8 ?
Total: 53 ?

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers recent three-game SU winning streak came to an end with Friday?s loss to Ottawa. The total went well OVER the closing 54 ?-point line in that game and it has gone OVER in six of their first nine games this season. One of the reasons for the results on the total line is an offense that is averaging 32.1 PPG as the highest scoring team in the league. The 44 points allowed in Week 10 was the first time Winnipeg gave up more than 23 points in any of their last six games.

Calgary?s slow start out of the gate on Sunday led to a 24-6 deficit at the half that it could never close. Stampeders? quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell still threw four touchdown passes in that game, but their defense looked uncharacteristically soft after holding opposing teams to fewer than 22 points in each of their first seven games. Calgary has now failed to cover in three of its last four games with the total going OVER in two of its last three contests.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary has beaten Winnipeg SU in 14 of the last 16 meetings on its home field. However, it has failed to cover in four of its last five home games against the Blue Bombers. The total has gone OVER in four of the last six meetings overall.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-4 SU, 4-4 ATS) at British Columbia Lions (3-5 SU, 5-3 ATS)
Point-spread: BC -2 ?
Total: 52

Game Overview

Kudos to Saskatchewan for executing the perfect game plan in Sunday?s stunning upset. It went on to outplay its West Division rivals in every phase of the game. Zach Collaros looked sharp throwing the ball with a 73.5 completion percentage on 34 passing attempts. He ended the game with 270 total passing yards and the Roughriders added another 112 yards running the ball. However, most of the credit for Sunday?s victory goes to the team?s play on the other side of the ball.

The Lions had been able to cover in their four previous games as part of a SU 2-2 record. Saturday?s loss to Toronto stayed UNDER the 50 ?-point closing line and it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of BC?s last five games. Travis Lulay completed 21 of his 34 passing attempts against Toronto for 285 yards and one touchdown pass, while Jeremiah Johnson carried the ball 11 times for 60 yards and another score.

Betting Trends

-- The home team has won the last three meetings SU, but Saskatchewan has covered ATS in eight of the last 10 games in this West Division tilt. The total has stayed UNDER in three of the last four meetings.

Saturday?s six-pack

It is never too late to be what you want to be:

? At age 24, future author Stephen King was working as a janitor and living in a trailer.

? At age 27, Vincent Van Gogh quit being a missionary and decided to go to art school.

? At age 30, Harrison Ford was a carpenter.

? Julia Child didn?t release her first cookbook until she was 39.

? Samuel L Jackson didn?t get his first movie role until he was 46.

? Grandma Moses didn?t begin her painting her career until she was 76.

Quote of the Day
?They?re going to have nerds in the dugout. And I?ve said it: If [New York GM Brian] Cashman had any balls, he?d have done that a long time ago. Or he?d like to now. Put a nerd in uniform. Because anybody can manage today. There?s 100 pitches, and then you start parading your 10 relievers in.?
Former relief ace Goose Gossage, not a fan of the way baseball is run these days

Saturday?s quiz
Where did Vikings? QB Kirk Cousins play his college football?

Friday?s quiz
Troy Aikman played college football at Oklahoma and UCLA.

Thursday?s quiz
Right now, David Fizdale is the head coach of the New York Knicks.

Saturday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) Cole Hamels? last five starts with last place Texas: 1-3, 11.86.

Cole Hamels? first five starts with the contending Cubs; 4-0, 1.06.

Go figure.

12) Browns? QB Tyrod Taylor dislocated the pinky on his left hand Thursday night, but for some unknown reason, came back into the game later on. Not sure that was a smart thing to do.

11) Speaking of which, Cam Newton scrambled against the Patriots Friday night, not only didn?t he slide, he dove head-first, got upended and landed on his left shoulder. He was OK, but whats the point of diving head-first and taking a hit?

New rule this year: if a QB dives-head-first, it gets treated just like he was sliding feet-first, it gets marked at the furthest point backwards where he touched the ground.

10) If you look at Week 1 NFL games the last five years, under was 42-36-1 in those games.

I?m thinking that since starters play so little football in the summer and in exhibition games, teams aren?t going to be as sharp (or in as good condition) as later on in the season.

Last year, under was 11-4 in Week 1 games. Something to think about.

9) Detroit Lions were only NFL team LY to have two WR?s catch passes for 1,000+ yards: Marvin Jones caught 61 passes for 1,101 yards, and Golden Tate caught 92 passes for 1,003 yards.

8) Over last 14 years, only preseason #1 college football teams to win the national title that year were USC in 2004 and Alabama last season.

7) Over last five years, best five college football teams against the spread:
? Temple 40-21, 65.6%
? Colorado State 37-23, 61.7%
? Duke 36-23, 61.0%
? Houston 35-24, 59.3%
? Navy 35-24, 59.3%

6) Home team lost eight of the last ten Cowboy-Eagle games.

5) Cubs? rookie infielder David Bote has five home runs this year; all five either tied the game or put the Cubs ahead- two of the homers were walk-offs.

4) Xavier and Illinois basketball teams are both playing in the Maui Classic in November; the two teams are chartering a plane together, so they can get a bigger plane and have more room than if they flew commercial. Teams are on opposite sides of the bracket in the tournament.

3) Former Xavier coach Chris Mack is now the Louisville coach; his non-conference schedule this season includes games with Tennessee, either Kansas/Marquette, Michigan State, at Seton Hall, at Indiana and Kentucky. They?ll be ready for ACC play.

2) Indians-Royals game Friday night was delayed because the fountains behind the centerfield fence at Kauffman Stadium overflowed, flooding the warning track in part of the outfield.

1) A wiseguy who lives near the Milwaukee airport painted ?Welcome to Cleveland? on the roof of his business, apparently to confuse people flying into Milwaukee. Funny guy.

STAMPS PULL AWAY FROM BOMBERS IN 39-26 WIN

CALGARY ? They may have trailed for 39 minutes, but the Calgary Stampeders righted the ship and eventually put it in cruise control en route to a 39-26 win over the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday at McMahon Stadium.

It was a historic afternoon for two Stampeders, as quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and receiver Kamar Jorden set career highs with 452 pass yards and 249 receiving yards respectively.

While Calgary?s offence roared to life in the second half, it was the Stampeder defence ? in the absence of coordinator DeVone Claybrooks, who continues to deal with a medical issue ? that stole the show.

Defensive end Ja?Gared Davis had a pair of close-range interceptions, including a statement pick-six in the closing stages, to put an exclamation mark on Calgary?s dominant defensive performance.

Star Winnipeg running back Andrew Harris was limited to 13 yards on seven carries, while quarterback Matt Nichols was held largely in check in a two-interception performance.

The Bombers went into the bag of tricks on their opening offensive possession, as backup quarterback Chris Streveler ? in for a 2nd-and-inches sneak ? dropped back and lobbed a deep pass to Ryan Lankford for a 65-yard touchdown. Justin Medlock nailed the convert and the visitors led 7-0.

Calgary cut into the lead six minutes later, when a 61-yard pickup on a Mitchell completion to Lemar Durant set up a 17-yard Rene Paredes field goal.

The Stamps then sacrificed two points on a safety, as they were unable to recover from a booming Justin Medlock punt which hemmed them against their goal line.

Momentum swung further in Winnipeg?s direction late in the first quarter, when Kamar Jorden fumbled the football after an initial catch; Taylor Loffler recovered for the Bombers, who would translate the turnover into a 39-yard Medlock field goal and push the lead to 12-3.

Mitchell and the Stamps broke into the end zone at 7:19 of the second quarter, capping a nine-play, 75-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown dart to DaVaris Daniels; the two-point convert attempt fell incomplete, and the Winnipeg lead stood at three.

Medlock continued his ?Mr. Automatic? routine later in the second quarter, splitting the uprights from 45 yards out to make it 15-9; Paredes responded with a 42-yard boot of his own, and the lead stood at 15-12 at the half.

Davis gave the Stamps an opportunity to score late in the half, snagging an interception hot potato-style to give his offence decent field position, but Paredes missed a 45-yard field goal attempt on the final play of quarter two.

Defence was the story for much of the third quarter, with neither team generating much offensively until Mitchell and the Stamps jolted to life late in the third quarter.

A 52-yard connection to Jorden brought the crowd to life, and set up a 25-yard Mitchell float pass to an unmarked Marken Michel in the end zone; the ensuing Paredes convert gave the Stamps a 19-15 lead, their first of the afternoon.

Paredes then extended Calgary?s lead to seven points with a 24-yard chip shot of a field goal at 9:21 of the fourth quarter.

While the Stampeder offence was springing to life, it was the defence that made a statement: Two plays after the field goal, Micah Johnson flung Winnipeg quarterback Matt Nichols to the turf for a sack, 10-yard loss and forced two-and-out.

Later, with the Bomber offence facing a 3rd-and-1 situation in the red zone with two minutes left, a crucial procedure penalty on the offensive line forced Winnipeg to settle for a 23-yard field goal.

The day?s dynamic duo ? Mitchell and Jorden ? then sealed the victory on the very next play from scrimmage with an electric 68-yard touchdown connection. The subsequent Paredes convert pushed the lead to 14.

Calgary?s momentum snowballed, as the aforementioned Davis notched a big-man touchdown via pick-six on a fluttering Nichols pass. Another successful Paredes convert extended the Stamps lead to 39-18.

Nichols found Darvin Adams late in the day for a consolation touchdown, and Kienan LaFrance sprinted in the two-point convert to make the final score more respectable.

The win moved the Stamps to 8-1 on the season, and restored the team?s four-point lead atop the West Division; Calgary will now buckle down to prepare for next week?s Labour Day classic (3 p.m. ET) at home against Edmonton (6-4).

Ja?Gared Davis and the rest of the Stampeder defence sent a message to the rest of the West Division: This is still a first-place outfit, regardless of last week?s result in Regina.

The loss dropped Winnipeg to 5-5. Mike O?Shea?s group will now face a difficult trek across the prairies to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-4) in the Banjo Bowl next Sunday (3 p.m. ET).

GAME RECAP

RIDERS HOLD ON FOR CLOSE ROAD VICTORY AGAINST LIONS

VANCOUVER ? Both team?s fought hard in a close battle on Saturday night, but the Saskatchewan Roughriders came out on top with a 24-21 road victory against the BC Lions. The Riders improved their season record to 5-4 to move into third place in the CFL West.

Special teams shined bright in this one with Lions kicker Ty Long going a perfect five for five on field goals, while Brett Lauther added three of his own for Saskatchewan. Christian Jones racked up 154 return yards for the Riders while Chris Rainey chipped in 151 return yards for BC.

Both defensive units put in a strong performance, with Zach Collaros and Travis Lulay each being held under 250 yards passing while facing heavy pressure and tight coverage all game long. The Riders? defence recovered two fumbles and Charleston Hughes recorded his league-leading 12th sack of the season.

Collaros finished with 215 passing yards and a 6-yard touchdown to Jordan Lambert-Williams, while Lulay completed 21 of 36 passes for 240 yards and a 10-yard touchdown to Bryan Burnham.

Lions leading receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux left the game with an injury after making a catch in the second quarter.

The Lions got on the board first thanks to an amazing grab from Burnham. The Lions? receiver extended high against defensive back Nick Marshall to reel in the 33-yard pass from Lulay, but a big sack from linebacker Cameron Judge forced the Lions to settle for a short field goal from Ty Long, giving them the early 3-0 lead.

Saskatchewan responded with a highlight reel catch of their own on the following drive when Shaq Evans leaped up high and out-battled defensive back Winston Rose for a 52-yard catch. Versatile athlete Nick Marshall came in and finished the drive off with a one-yard rushing touchdown after three hard runs from Tre Mason, and the extra point from Lauther put the Riders on top 7-3.

Rainey appeared to be on his way to the end zone on the ensuing kickoff, finding his way into open field for a 74-yard return until Crezdon Butler found a way to run him down for the touchdown saving tackle. The Lions used the positive field position to set up a 27-yard field goal from Long, bringing the team within a point before the end of the opening quarter.

BC defensive end Shawn Lemon shut down Saskatchewan?s opening second quarter drive with his fourth sack of the season, but the Riders managed to extend their lead to four points with a 37-yard field goal from Lauther.

The Lions looked to be moving the ball well after getting it back on offence, but a Charleston Hughes sack jarred the ball loose from Lulay?s grasp and set up a 21-yard scoop and run from defensive lineman Tobi Antigha. Saskatchewan capitalized on the turnover with a 6-yard touchdown toss from Collaros to Williams-Lambert, helping the Riders grab a 17-6 lead.

The Lions cut Saskatchewan?s lead down to eight points on the next drive after an impressive 18-yard run from Rainey put Long in position for a 41-yard field goal. The Lions defence forced a punt on the next drive, but Rainey mishandled the return and Riders safety Mike Edem recovered the fumble. BC?s defence held strong to limit the Riders to a 44-yard field goal, bringing the score to 20-9.

Burnham found a way to top his big first quarter catch on the Lions? next possession as he stretched out to make an incredible grab while getting a knee down in bounds near the edge of the end zone for the 10-yard touchdown. Long added the extra point to make it a five-point game.

Long added a 48-yard field goal for BC before the end of the half to make it 20-18 for the Riders.

Saskatchewan extended their lead to three points at the start of the second half after a missed field goal from Lauther went out of bounds for a single. Returner Christian Jones used his speed to help the Riders add to their lead later in the third quarter, dashing into the open field for a 60-yard punt return that set up a 26-yard field goal from Lauther to make it 24-18.

Long knocked through a 30-yard field goal for the Lions to making it a three-point game at the start of the fourth quarter, and BC appeared to be closing the gap when defensive back Anthony Orange came up with a big fourth quarter interception. But Saskatchewan?s defence stepped up to preserve the lead and secure the 24-21 victory.

Week 12 will see the Riders host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers next Sunday, while the Lions will have a week off before hosting the Ottawa REDBLACKS in Week 13.

Betting Recap - Week 11
Joe Williams

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 SU in Week 11
-- Underdogs went 3-1 ATS in Week 11
-- Home teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 11
-- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 ATS record in Week 11
-- The 'Under' went 3-1 in Week 11

Analysis

Hamilton (4-5) was back in action after a bye, topping Edmonton (6-4) by a 25-24 count in the Hammer. The Eskimos had the unenviable task of playing five days later after a win at home on Aug. 18 against Montreal (2-8). It has been rough for the Esks lately, allowing 26.3 points per game (PPG) across their past three.

As far as the Ti-Cats are concerned, they have won two of their past three straight-up, while going 2-1 ATS in the past three as well. The 'under' is 5-1-1 over their past seven games despite the fact they have averaged 29.3 PPG in their past three.

For the Alouettes, they snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory over rival Toronto (3-6), as QB Johnny Manziel earned his first victory under center. They scored 25 points to set a new season best, topping the 24 points they posted in their previous game in Edmonton. The Als are suddenly putting it together, and they have covered in a season-high three consecutive games, too.

For the Argonauts, they dropped to 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS in four trips away from home with their loss in Montreal. The 'under' is also 3-1 in their four forays onto the road. They'll have a bye in Week 12 before a home-and-home with the Ti-Cats in Week 13-14.

Calgary (8-1) snapped back on track after their first loss in Week 10, posting a 39-26 win and cover against Winnipeg (5-5). The Stamps defense has been a problem over the past four outings, allowing 26.5 PPG after yielding just 9.2 PPG through the first five contests. As a result, the under was 5-0 in their first five, and the over is 3-1 across the past four.

The Blue Bombers opened the season with a respectable 5-2 ATS mark in their first seven contest, but they have failed to cover in a season-high three straight. The 'over' is 4-1 in their past five, too, while going 7-3 in their 10 games overall. The D has been especially pitiful lately, allowing a total of 83 points across the past two.

The upward ascent for Saskatchewan (5-4) continued with a 24-21 road win against the BC Lions (3-5). They'll look for a season-high third straight when they kick off a home-and-home with the Bombers on Sept. 2.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 12
David Schwab

Week 11 Betting Recap

For the second week in a row, the underdogs in the CFL were the best bet against the spread at 3-1. Edmonton got things going last Thursday in a 25-24 loss to Hamilton as a 3 ?-point underdog on the road. In Friday?s action, Montreal pulled off the straight-up upset with a last-second 25-22 victory against Toronto as a five-point underdog at home.

Saturday?s doubleheader of games got underway with Calgary bouncing back from last week?s unexpected loss with a solid 39-26 victory over Winnipeg as a 7 ?-point home favorite. Week 11 closed things out with Saskatchewan squeezing past British Columbia 24-21 after closing as a 2 ?-point road underdog.

Friday, Aug. 31

Montreal Alouettes (2-8 SU, 5-5 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (6-3 SU, 4-5 ATS)

Point-spread: Ottawa -13
Total: 51 ?

Game Overview

Montreal snapped a straight-up six-game losing streak with last Friday night?s upset and it has now covered in it last three games. The total stayed UNDER 52 ?-points against the Argonauts and it has stayed UNDER in six of the Alouettes? first 10 contests. The quarterback situation in Montreal has been an issue all year long, but the offense has found some better consistency over the past two weeks with Antonio Pipkin as the starter. He has completed 63.2 percent of his 57 passing attempts for 520 yards.

The RedBlacks come off a Week 11 bye with a two-game lead over Hamilton in the East. They beat Montreal 24-17 on Aug. 11, but could not cover the heavy 14-point spread at home. Ottawa also won the first meeting early in the season 28-18 as a 7 ?-point road favorite. The total stayed UNDER in each of those two wins. Trevor Harris is third in the CFL in passing with 2,735 yards through nine starts.

Betting Trends

-- Ottawa has won the last five meetings SU and it has a 5-1 edge ATS in its last six games against Montreal. The total has stayed UNDER in the last five matchups in the East Division clash.

Sunday, Sept. 2

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-5 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-4 SU, 5-4 ATS)

Point-spread: Saskatchewan -3
Total: 54 ?

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers have lost their last two outings both SU and ATS coming into the first game of this West Division home-and-home clash. The total has gone OVER in both of those setbacks with the defense allowing a combined 83 points. Winnipeg is still the highest scoring team in the league with an average of 31.5 points through its first 10 games to help take the total OVER in seven of those outings.

Saskatchewan did what it had to do to get past BC last week and it has strung together four victories in its last six games both SU and ATS. The total stayed UNDER 50 ?-points against the Lions after it had gone OVER in three of its previous four games. One of the big reasons for the recent success has been the elevated play of Zach Collaros at quarterback. He thrown for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns in five starts this year.

Betting Trends

-- The Roughriders have covered ATS in six of their last nine home games against Winnipeg and the total has gone OVER in the last five meetings in Saskatchewan.

Monday, Sept. 3

Edmonton Eskimos (6-4 SU, 4-6 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (8-1 SU, 6-3 ATS)

Point-spread: Calgary -6 ?
Total: 53

Game Overview

The Eskimos have a golden opportunity to make things interesting out West over the next two weeks in this home-and-home series. Edmonton has a pair of losses (SU and ATS) in its last three games and concerns with a shaky defense have once gain plagued this team. The defense is allowing an average of 24.7 points per game and that average as crept up to 26.7 points in the last three contests.

Calgary quickly got back to its winning ways following a stunning loss to Saskatchewan in Week 10. With the 13-point victory against the Blue Bombers, the Stampeders have won seven of eight games by double figures. The total has gone OVER in three of their last four games with an average of 31.8 points scored after it had stayed UNDER in their first five contests this season.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary has a 9-1 SU record in its last 10 games against the Eskimos at home and it has covered the spread in five of the last seven meetings on its home field. The total has gone OVER in five of the last seven meetings overall.

Toronto Argonauts (3-6 SU, 4-5 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-5 SU, 3-5-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Hamilton -7 ?
Total: 52

Game Overview

Toronto has turned to McLeod Bethel-Thompson has its new starting quarterback. Heading into the second half of the season, it decided to add veteran wide receiver Duron Carter to the mix after he was recently released by Saskatchewan. The Argonauts are going to need all the help they can get coming off that unexpected loss to Montreal. Bethel-Thompson did throw for 296 yards and one touchdown in last Friday?s game.

The Tiger-Cats are 2-4 SU in their last six games with a costly 1-4-1 mark ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their first nine games heading into the opener of this East Division home-and-home tilt. Hamilton is an even 2-2 SU at home this season and it has failed to cover in three of those four games. In last Thursday?s squeaker against the Eskimos, Jeramiah Masoli put the ball up 44 times with 27 completions for 419 yards and one score. He was also picked off twice.

Betting Trends

-- Hamilton has a SU 7-3 edge over Toronto in the last 10 meetings of this East Division matchup and it has gone 9-3 ATS in the last 12 games between the two. The total has gone OVER in four of the last six matchups.

OTTAWA ? A strong defensive performance powered the Montreal Alouettes to a 21-11 victory over the Ottawa REDBLACKS at TD Place on Friday Night Football.

Kicker Boris Bede accounted for 14 of Montreal?s 21 points ? a quartet of field goals and two singles ? in the win for the Alouettes, who kept the REDBLACKS out of the end zone on the night.

Sophomore quarterback Antonio Pipkin completed 18 of 27 passes for 242 pass yards in the win; while the Tiffin University product threw two interceptions, he also made plays on the ground en route to 75 rush yards and a touchdown.

The win was Montreal?s second on the hop, and tightens the playoff race in the East Division significantly

The Alouettes opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, as Pipkin, running back Ryder Stone and co. marched on a 10-play, 85-yard drive that resulted in a 19-yard Boris Bede field goal.

Ottawa got on the board with a 54-yard punt single from Richie Leone on the subsequent series.

Montreal?s defence was the story of the first half, sacking Trevor Harris three times; defensive end Jesse Joseph was specifically a beast off the edge, with a sack and tackle-for-loss.

Another Bede field goal from 43 yards out three minutes into the second quarter extended the visitors? lead to 6-1.

Bede followed it up with a 32-yard boot at the 5:46 mark, making it 9-1; Lewis Ward and the REDBLACKS responded with a 40-yard kick of their own, and the teams headed to the locker room with the score 9-4 in favour of the Alouettes.

Montreal made it a six-point game on the opening kickoff of the second half, as Bede sent his place kick through the end zone for a single.

Momentum swung Ottawa?s way three minutes into the third quarter, as Jonathon Rose stepped up and intercepted an Antonio Pipkin pass and set the REDBLACKS offence up at Montreal?s 22-yard line.

Two plays later, Ottawa quarterback Trevor Harris appeared to find Brad Sinopoli in the end zone, but the initial ruling of a touchdown was overturned upon review: The ball hit the ground before Sinopoli had full control, and Ottawa had to settle for a 13-yard Ward field goal.

The missed points would come back to bite the REDBLACKS, as Montreal responded with a long, pass interference-aided drive that ended with an Antonio Pipkin one-yard plunge into the end zone. Boris Bede?s convert gave the visitors a 10-point lead.

Bede tacked on another single with another monster single on the ensuing kickoff, and Montreal led 18-7.

A 35-yard field goal from Ward got the REDBLACKS within a single score early in the fourth quarter, and a Richie Leone punt single at the 9:41 mark cut the deficit to 18-11.

The kicking parade continued with Bede splitting the uprights from close range from 14 yards out at the 6:17 mark, restoring the 10-point lead.

Montreal?s defence shut the door when it mattered most, stopping three Harris end zone attempts from the three-yard line late in the fourth quarter.

Alouettes defensive back Tevaughn Campbell put the icing on the cake inside the final 30 seconds, intercepting a Harris deep bomb.

With the win, the Alouettes moved to 3-8 on the season and are temporarily within one win of a playoff spot. Mike Sherman?s team will now enter a bye week, then prepare for a Week 14 contest against BC (3-6) on Friday Night Football (7:30 p.m. ET).

The loss dropped the REDBLACKS to 6-4 on the season; Rick Campbell?s Ottawa team will now travel across the country for a Week-13 matchup against the BC Lions (3-6) on Friday Night Football (10 p.m. ET).
