? Duke lost PG Tre Jones with a separated shoulder in this game.

? Nets 109, Celtics 102? Brooklyn outscored Boston 44-21 in third quarter.

? Rockets? big guy Clint Capela (thumb) is out 4-6 weeks.

? Tampa Bay Rays gave OF Avisail Garcia $3.5M for one year; he could get up to $6M if he hits his incentives.

? Denver Broncos signed Mike Munchak as their new OL coach; big hire for Denver, and big loss for the Steelers.

****************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: College hoop knowledge??.

13) Missouri Valley:
? Valparaiso is 4-1 in games decided by 5 or fewer points, or in OT.
? Illinois State is 52-24 in this league the last five years, but hasn?t made NCAA?s since 1998- they?re 2-2 in Valley so far this year.
? #95 Loyola is only team ranked above #136 in country, so Arch Madness will determine the only bid from this league.

12) Ivy League:
? Have only been three conference games so much, so hard to tell a lot so far.
? #90 Yale is highest-ranked team; they beat Cal, Miami, lost to Memphis in double OT.
? Brown is 11-4, but vs schedule #318. Still, 11-4 is 11-4.

11) Mountain West:
? Boise State/UNLV are both 3-0, but Nevada/Fresno are two best teams.
? San Diego State is in decline; they?re 9-7, 1-2 in MW, losing 62-48 at Air Force Saturday.
? Utah State is 12-5 under new coach Smith, who came in from South Dakota.
? This is a one-bid league unless Nevada gets upset in conference tourney.

10) Atlantic 14:
? This league has only two teams in top 200 in country in experience.
? Dayton, Davidson, Saint Louis all started out 3-0 in conference.
? Saint Louis forced turnovers on 25.3% of possessions in first three A-14 games.
? This looks like another one-bid conference.

9) Mid American:
? League ranking is up to #9, its highest spot since at least 2002.
? Buffalo is 15-1, by far best team in MAC; they?ve won at West Virginia, Syracuse.
? Bulls start three seniors and a junior; they beat Arizona in NCAA?s LY.
? Northern Illinois is #37 in experience; they won first three MAC games.

8) West Coast:
? Have nine teams in top 200; only had six last two years, four the year before that.
? San Francisco is 14-3 and played Gonzaga tough; are they 2nd-best team in WCC?
? Gonzaga won 96-83 at USF Saturday; in six games before that, Zags had allowed average of only 46 ppg.
? Not sure this is a multi-bid league, but #8 ranking is its highest in four years.

7) American:
? Houston is 16-1 for Kelvin Sampson, but vs schedule #262.
? Temple is 13-3, 3-1 in last season of Fran Dunphy?s terrific coaching career.
? Memphis is 11-6, 3-1 in Penny Hardaway?s first season as a college coach.
? There will definitely be bubble teams from this league on March 17.

6) Pac-12:
? Ugly season for Pac-12; there are no top 40 teams right now.
? UCLA already fired its coach; they?re 10-7 and very, very young.
? Washington is most experienced team in league and is off to a 3-0 start.
? Oregon State is 3-0 in Pac-12; they haven?t had winning season in league since at least 2002.

5) Big East:
? Villanova is 4-0, but Wildcats aren?t nearly as good as they?ve been.
? Patrick Ewing?s Georgetown teams play lot of high-scoring, fun games to watch.
? Butler lost four of last five games, last two by one point each.
? Marquette/Villanova look good for NCAA?s; lot of bubble teams elsewhere.

4) SEC:
? League has four teams in top 25, seven in top 50.
? Ole Miss is off to surprising 13-2 start for new coach Kermit Davis.
? Auburn is 12-3 but lost both its true road games so far.
? Kentucky lost its opener by 34 to Duke, but won four of its last five games as they gradually improve- they?re 12-3, despite being experience team #350.

3) ACC:
? Duke, Virginia and Virginia Tech are all 3-0 in conference.
? Syracuse split its last six home games, losing to Old Dominion, Buffalo. Ga Tech.
? League has seven teams in top 30.
? Virginia plays slowest tempo in country; they?re shooting 43.1% on arc in ACC games.

2) Big X:
? This is Shaka Smart?s 4th year at Texas; he is 26-33 in league games, 3-2 this year.
? West Virginia is 0-4 in league, turning ball over 22.3% of time in Big X games.
? League has four teams in top 20.
? Six of 10 teams in league are outside top 200 in country in experience.

1) Big 14:
? Michigan/Michigan State are both 6-0 in conference; they meet Feb 24/March 9.
? Nebraska is an experienced team, but they lost three of first four Big 14 road games, with losses by 7-2-9 points.
? Wisconsin shot only 54.4% from foul line in first five conference games.
? League has eight teams in kenpom.com top 30.

GO AGAINST THIS TREND IN PENS-SHARKS GAME AND THIS WEEK'S NHL PREDICTIONS AND PICKS

NO HOME TEAM ADVANTAGE HERE
A midseason swoon has the Colorado Avalanche scrambling to remain in the Western Conference playoff picture entering Monday's showdown with the powerhouse Maple Leafs. The Avs are a miserable 3-10-3 SU over their past 16 games to tumble all the way down to 28th in overall money earned at -10.30 units. But the road team has dominated this matchup in the post-lockout era, winning 11 of the previous 15 encounters. The teams have combined for six or more goals in six of their past seven meetings, as well, so bettors should consider the Over.

GOOD LUCK, GOALIES
Two of the highest-scoring clubs in the NHL will do battle Tuesday night at SAP Center as the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the San Jose Sharks. The Penguins rank fourth in the league in goals per game at 3.56, a fraction ahead of fifth-place San Jose (3.55). And both sides have been even more prolific in January, ranking first (4.67) and third (4.50), respectively, entering the week. That being said, the Pens and Sharks have scored more than five combined goals just twice in their previous eight meetings ? but can you really ignore the video-game numbers these teams are putting up?

JEKYLL AND HABS
The Montreal Canadiens have been truly consistent in their inconsistency when matching up against the Florida Panthers, making it difficult to predict which version will show up for Tuesday's encounter between the two teams at Bell Centre. The Canadiens have won four of the previous seven meetings with the Panthers, and scored a whopping 20 goals in those victories. But Montreal was a completely different team in the three defeats, failing to score in any of them. We like the latter iteration to show up Tuesday night, with the Canadiens entering the week with a league-low 10 goals so far this month.

PHILLY CHILLY VS. BRUINS
The Philadelphia Flyers have sunk to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings ? and things likely won't get any better for them Wednesday night as they host the surging Boston Bruins. Philadelphia has been the worst value play in the league to date (more on that later), and has lost five of its previous six encounters with the Bruins, who come into the week having won nine of their previous 12 games overall. Goal scoring has been a major problem for the Flyers in that span, as they've finished with two or fewer goals on four occasions while being shut out twice.

GOALIE PROFILE: HENRIK LUNDQVIST, NEW YORK RANGERS

One of the greatest goaltenders of the 21st Century might be nearing the end of his sensational career ? at least if his recent struggles are any indication. Henrik Lundqvist has been unspeakably bad for the better part of a month, allowing four or more goals in eight of his previous 11 games. Things are so bad for the Swedish superstar that the Rangers opted to give him a "mental break" over the weekend.

INJURY UPDATE: VICTOR HEDMAN, TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

The Lightning have been fortunate from a health perspective this season ? but they're holding their breath after losing star defenseman Victor Hedman to injury over the weekend. Hedman left Sunday's 5-1 loss to the New York Islanders after colliding with an official; he didn't return, but head coach Jon Cooper said after the game that Hedman didn't go through the league's concussion protocol. Hedman has 29 points in 39 games this season with the Lightning, who are 5-2-0 SU and 4-2-1 O/U in the seven games Hedman has missed in 2018-19.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

Is it better goaltending or wasted offensive chances? Whatever the case, non-overtime games have been a boon for Under bettors of late, cashing at nearly a 60-percent clip over the previous seven days (25 of 42). The Under has been converted in 57.4 percent of non-OT contests over the past month.
If you do want to take your chance on an Over play, you can't do much better than choosing games featuring Chris Rooney. The veteran referee has 24-13 O/U record in the 37 games he has officiated this season, good for a massive +10.72-unit surplus. Teams are averaging nearly 6 1/2 goals per game in Rooney's assignments.
There's quite a battle going on for the worst value team in the NHL. And while the Flyers (-15.16) own top spot entering the week, they're facing a significant challenge from the Panthers, who sit at -15.10. Four other teams are also at -10 or worse on the season: New Jersey (-10.05), Chicago (-10.22), Colorado (-10.30) and Los Angeles (-10.46).

Filppula's OT goal lifts surging Islanders past Blues 2-1
January 15, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Valtteri Filppula scored 1:37 into overtime and the New York Islanders beat the St. Louis Blues 2-1 Tuesday night for their 12th win in 15 games.

Jordan Eberle had a goal in the first period for New York, and Robin Lehner stopped 30 shots.

David Perron scored the tying goal in the third period for the Blues, and Jordan Binnington - making his fourth straight start and fourth of his career - finished with 23 saves. St. Louis had won three straight and five of its previous seven.

On the winner, Filppula jumped on the ice, got a pass from Mathew Barzal and skated in on Binnington before beating him from the right side for his 10th of the season.

BLUE JACKETS 4, DEVILS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Joonas Korpisalo had 29 saves and three Columbus players recorded a goal and an assist in the win over New Jersey.

Artemi Panarin, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Cam Atkinson carried the offensive load, and Boone Jenner also scored as Columbus won its fourth straight. The Blue Jackets have won six of their last eight games and 11 of the last 14 while sparring with Washington and Pittsburgh atop the Metropolitan Division.

Korpisalo has started three of the last four games ahead of star Sergei Bobrovsky and won each time. The 24-year-old Finn could soon find himself the team's No.1 goalie as Bobrovsky has refused to sign a contract extension with Columbus and may be traded before the deadline next month.

Blake Coleman scored and Keith Kinkaid had 30 saves for the Devils, who saw a two-game winning streak end

RANGERS 6, HURRICANES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Mika Zibanejad had two goals and two assists to lead the Rangers past Carolina.

Pavel Buchnevich and Tony DeAngelo each scored twice and Mats Zuccarello added three assists as the Rangers won for only the second time in eight games. Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves for his 444th win, one behind Terry Sawchuk for sixth place on the NHL's career list.

Saku Maenalanen had two goals and Curtis McElhinney stopped 22 shots but the Hurricanes lost for just the second time since the new year.

CANADIENS 5, PANTHERS 1

MONTREAL (AP) - Antti Niemi made a career-high 52 saves and Montreal extended its winning streak to three games with a victory over Florida.

Shea Weber, Phillip Danault, Max Domi, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Brendan Gallagher scored for Montreal.

Mike Hoffman scored in the first period for the Panthers, who have dropped seven consecutive games, their longest skid of the season. Florida's last victory was on Dec. 31, against the Detroit Red Wings.

Roberto Luongo was expected to start in goal for Florida, but James Reimer got the nod in a game-time decision. Reimer stopped 23 shots.

RED WINGS 3, DUCKS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Gustav Nyquist broke a tie with 4:16 left and Darren Helm scored a little later, lifting Detroit and extending Anaheim's franchise-record losing streak to 12 games.

Nyquist lifted his stick at the left side of the net and tipped in Danny DeKeyser's shot from the slot. Helm's goal with 2:33 remaining gave the Red Wings a two-goal cushion.

John Gibson stopped 22 shots for the Ducks, who haven't won since Dec. 17. Prior to the skid, they had won nine of 10.

Detroit won consecutive games for the first time in more than a month.

Rickard Rakell deflected a shot past Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard midway through the second period on a power play. Howard finished with 23 saves.

PREDATORS 7, CAPITALS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Viktor Arvidsson had his second career hat trick and Nashville routed Washington to snap a two-game skid.

Nick Bonino scored twice, and Rocco Grimaldi and Calle Jarnkrok each added a goal as 12 players contributed at least one point for the Predators. They set a season high for goals, topping the six they scored Dec. 31 in a win at Washington, the defending Stanley Cup champion.

Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Johansen each had two assists, and Juuse Saros made 26 saves for the win.

Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie scored for the Capitals.

WILD 3, KINGS 2, SO

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Jason Zucker scored in a shootout for the first time in his career to lift Minnesota over Los Angeles.

It was Zucker's first shootout goal in five tries. He was the only shooter from either team to convert.

Nino Niederreiter and Eric Staal scored for the Wild, who had lost their previous two games.

Ilya Kovalchuck and Jeff Carter scored for the Kings, who came into the game tied with Ottawa for the fewest points in the league.

JETS 4, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Kyle Connor had two goals and an assist as Winnipeg beat Vegas.

Connor scored short-handed and into an empty net. Mathieu Perreault had a goal and Mark Scheifele also scored into an empty net for Winnipeg. Scheifele added an assist and Blake Wheeler contributed a pair.

Laurent Brossoit, making his 11th start this season, stopped 43 shots for Winnipeg, which swept a three-game homestand and improved to 5-0-1 in its past six.

Brandon Pirri scored and Marc-Andre Fleury made 22 saves for Vegas, which is 8-2-0 in its last 10 games.

LIGHTNING 2, STARS 0

DALLAS (AP) - Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 35 shots for his second shutout in a week, Ondrej Palat and Mikhail Sergachev scored and Tampa Bay blanked Dallas.

Vasilevskiy improved to 10-2-1 since his return from injury, posting his third shutout this season and 15th of his career for the Lightning, who have an NHL-best 74 points.

Anton Khudobin made 19 saves for Dallas.

SHARKS 5, PENGUINS 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Tomas Hertl scored three goals and Joe Thornton celebrated his 1,000th game for San Jose by adding another that helped the Sharks win their seventh straight game.

Marcus Sorensen also scored and the Sharks improved to 16-3-2 in their past 21 games with a convincing victory over the dangerous Penguins. Martin Jones made 22 saves to tie his career best by winning his eighth straight start.

Kris Letang and Derick Brassard scored for the Penguins, who have lost two in a row following a stretch of 10 wins in 11 games. Matt Murray stopped 24 shots but had his career-high nine-game winning streak snapped.

Wednesday?s 6-pack:

This is a little strange; Caesar?s Palace posted odds to win the NIT this March:
5-1? Field
6-1? Saint Mary?s
12-1? Utah State
15-1? Arizona
16-1? San Francisco
20-1? Alabama, ASU, Baylor, Creighton, Oregon St, Wofford
25-1? Clemson, East Tennessee State,

Tweet of the Day
?You?ve got to learn too much. You?ve got to have a great relationship with your offensive line, the receivers, know all the defenses that are going to be thrown at you. It?s just not an NFL season with quarterbacks. They need a lot longer than the season. The offseason is huge for those guys to be successful.?
Former NFL DB, major league OF Brian Jordan

Wednesday?s quiz
Hank Stram was the Chiefs? coach for their only Super Bowl win; what other NFL team did he later coach?

Tuesday?s quiz
NBA?s Thunder were the Seattle SuperSonics before moving to Oklahoma City.

Monday?s quiz
In the movie Bull Durham, when the Bulls cut Crash Davis, he finished the season with the Asheville Tourists.

***********************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??..

13) Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray declared for the NFL Draft, which is just a procedural thing to keep his options open; the pivotal moment in his career path will be whether or not he goes to the NFL Combine in February, 11 days after the start of spring training.

Four guys on ESPN?s NFL show Monday said they thought Murray would be a first-round draft pick in the NFL; those four guys are rarely unanimous in agreeing on anything. If he gets taken in the first round, Murray would be a damn fool to play baseball- he?ll make a lot more money as a QB than working his way up thru the minor leagues.

12) Murray has a very interesting decision to make. Joe Mauer earned $218M in his baseball career, just in salary; Matt Holliday earned just under $160M in his. Both guys were HS quarterbacks who turned down college scholarships to become baseball players, but there also guys who tried to juggle both sports and never achieved stardom in either.

11) Then there is Chase Daniel, who has earned $28M in his nine NFL seasons, while starting a total of four games. Playing QB in the NFL is really, really lucrative if you?re great at it. Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and the Manning brothers have all earned $200M+ in their careers.

Lamar Jackson got a signing bonus of more than $4.9M as the last pick of the first round last year; Murray?s signing bonus with the A?s is $4.66M, most of which he has to return if he signs with an NFL team (he?s already gotten $1.5M of it, would get to keep $200K or so).

10) CBSSports.com posted a mock draft Tuesday, which means bupkis but it is interesting to look at, and they had the Giants taking Murray with the 6th pick.

Oakland A?s Class A farm teams are in Beloit and Stockton; not a tough choice whether to suit up for the New Jersey Giants or the Beloit Snappers.

9) Not sure why the Jets would want to hire a new coach, but not let the guy hire his own assistants? Apparently Baylor?s Matt Rhule and Mike McCarthy both turned the Jets down because they wanted to decide who their assistants would be, rather than be told.

8) Not much better comedy on TV than listening to ESPN?s Jay Bilas whine about Duke?s star Zion Williamson ?being officiated differently?, because he is bigger/stronger than most guys. Nothing like a TV analyst/alum toting the party line for his alma mater.

7) Sad sign of the times: Prison guards in federal prisons are being mocked by prisoners because the guards are working, but not getting paid. Sounds like a fantastic job.

6) Modern football: James White is a running back for the Patriots, but on Sunday against the Chargers he didn?t run the ball once? he did catch 15 passes for 97 yards.

5) Difference between high majors and mid-majors:
Southern Illinois-Illinois State game Tuesday: one soph, 2 juniors, 7 seniors started.

Syracuse-Duke Monday night: 3 freshmen, 2 sophs, 4 juniors, one senior started.

If you play for a top 20 team now and you?re a senior, its almost like you?re a suspect.

4) TCU is 12-3, having a pretty good season, but they?ve had three players transfer out this season, which led them to giving one of their walk-ons a scholarship, and they got creative in how they told the kid.

Players are in a meeting room, and a sheriff walks in, holding a piece of paper and looking stern. He says he is looking for someone: ?Is Owen Ashieris here?? The kid gets up, walks over to the sheriff, and finds out he?s been given a college scholarship. Kind of cool.

3) Indianapolis Colts jumped from 4-12 to 10-6 this year, and much of credit for that went to their offensive line, which protected Andrew Luck very well.

But on Tuesday, the Colts fired OL coach Dave DeGuglielmo, who was the only offensive coach that Josh McDaniel hired during his brief dalliance Indianapolis last winter. Apparently, Reich wants his own guy, so he must have someone in mind, or why not keep DeGuglielmo?

2) Former Notre Dame QB Brandon Wimbush will play his last year of college football at Central Florida; he went 12-3 as a starting QB for the Fighting Irish.

1) New York Governor Andrew Cuomo got off his butt this week, wants 2019 to be the year legalized sports betting comes to New York.

?Let?s authorize sports betting in the upstate casinos. It?s here. It?s a reality, and it will generate activity in those casinos.?

Its about time.

Sean Couturier has hat trick, Flyers beat Bruins 4-3
January 16, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Sean Couturier had a hat trick, Carter Hart stopped 39 shots and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Couturier scored twice within 90 seconds in the second period and sealed the win with his 19th goal late in the third for his first career regular-season hat trick after doing it twice in the playoffs. He gave the Flyers hat tricks in consecutive games after James van Riemsdyk did it Monday night.

Oskar Lindblom also scored, with Claude Giroux getting his 500th assist to join Hall of Famer Bobby Clarke (852) as the only Flyers to hit that milestone. Peter Cehlarik scored twice in his first game of the season and David Pastrnak added a goal for Boston.

SABRES 4, FLAMES 3, OT

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Jack Eichel scored at 1:10 of overtime to lift Buffalo past Calgary.

Seconds after putting a backhand off the post, the Buffalo captain beat goalie Dave Rittich with a low shot to the glove side.

Jake McCabe, Evan Rodrigues and Rasmus Dahlin also scored and Linus Ullmark made 30 saves to help Buffalo snap a four-game skid and end Calgary's five-game winning streak.

Johnny Gaudreau had a goal and an assist for the Flames, and Matthew Tkachuk and Noah Hanifin also scored. Rittich made 19 saves.

SENATORS 5, AVALANCHE 2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Matt Duchene had two goals and an assist against his former club and Ottawa beat Colorado for its first home victory since Dec. 17.

Duchene returned after missing three games for the birth of his first son.

Brady Tkachuk, Mark Stone and Ryan Dzingel also scored for the Senators, and Anders Nilsson made 30 saves. Nikita Zadorov and Nathan MacKinnon scored for Colorado.

*********************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) Tulsa 88, UConn 80? Both head coaches got tossed at the same time in this game, which doesn?t happen a whole lot. Don?t think I?ve ever heard of it before.

Tulsa led 61-47 with 11:19 left in the game when the refs lost control of things; the delay wound up being 6-7 minutes, with both coaches pleading their cases to stay on the bench, but the refs clearly had enough of listening to them.

Tulsa was 26-36 on foul line in this game, Huskies 12-15.

12) Iowa State 68, Texas Tech 64? Kansas? top two challengers in the Big X hooked up here; these are two really good teams. This easily could?ve been an Elite 8 or Final Four game.

Cyclones led 41-33 at halftime; they didn?t turn ball over once the whole half.

11) St John?s 81, Creighton 66? Bluejays are in top 5 in country in 3-point shooting, but were just 11-35 in this game, and they lost their 4th game in a row. Ponds scored 22 for St John?s after he missed the Red Storm?s last game

10) South Carolina 74, Vanderbilt 71? Commodores led 68-63 with 1:38 left before a technical foul for taunting on Vandy helped swing this foul-filled game, where both teams took 35+ foul shots.

Gamecocks are a surprising 4-0 in SEC, after a 5-7 pre-conference record; their bench outscored Vandy?s subs 28-12.

9) Illinois State 59, Southern Illinois 58? Redbirds blew a 16-point second half lead, then outscored SIU 8-5 over final 4:55 for the win. State?s last three games were decided by a total of five points.

8) Drake 69, Bradley 52? Homestanding Braves went 5-33 in first half of this game; they?re now 0-5 in MVC, despite being one of most experienced teams in league.

7) Upsets of the Week:
Tuesday:
? Wake Forest (+9.5) 71, NC State 67
? Central Michigan (+7) 78, Northern Illinois 69
? St Joe?s (+5) 61, Davidson 60
? Kent State (+5) 66, Ohio U 52
? LSU (+5) 83, Ole Miss 69

Wednesday:
? Kansas State (+6.5) 74, Oklahoma 61
? George Washington (+6) 59, LaSalle 56
? Iowa State (+5) 68, Texas Tech 64
? South Carolina (+5) 74, Vanderbilt 71

6) Warriors 142, Nuggets 111? Golden State scored 51 points in the first QUARTER.

5) Nevada 72, Boise State 71? Red flag for the Wolf Pack, who were life/death here after losing at New Mexico earlier this month. Nevada isn?t playing that well away from Reno- they take bad shots.

4) Iowa 89, Penn State 82? Iowa ended this game on an 8-0 run. Nittany Lions are 0-7 in conference; their coach got suspended for a game for shoving a player during a timeout. Sounds like they?re not having much fun.

3) Campbell 70, NC-Asheville 53? Camels get a win on a Wednesday (Hump Day).

2) Temple 85, East Carolina 74? Owls are quietly 14-3 this season, 4-1 in AAC.

1) Nets 145, Rockets 142 OT? James Harden scored 57-58 points in his last two games.

In the Crease - Week 17
Joe Williams

2ip312.jpg

Toothless Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks are fading fast, going 0-8-4 across the past 12 games. Despite the ugly skid they're still just two points behind the Edmonton Oilers for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference with plenty of time to turn things around. In the past they're slide and 47 points through 47 games might be a death knell, but the last few playoff spots in the West this season might go to teams with point totals slightly lower than we've seen in recent seasons. The road trip continues at Minnesota on Thursday, at New Jersey on Saturday and at N.Y. Islanders on Sunday before returning home Wednesday against St. Louis to finish up before the All-Star break. If they don't break the skid then, they'll have to wait all the way until Feb. 2 due to the All-Star break, when they embark on another five-game road trip.

Calgary...On Fire
The Calgary Flames have fired to the top of the Pacific Division with an 8-1-2 mark across the past 11 outings, although they certainly haven't done it with a lot of attention. The Flames have posted a 15-4-5 mark at home this season, but they're a respectable 15-9-0 in 24 outings away from home to lead the Western Conference in road victories. Their plus-39 goal differential is also good for second in the NHL behind only the Tampa Bay Lightning (plus-58). The Flames face the Detroit Red Wings at home on Friday, and have a quick turnaround in Edmonton on Saturday night. Head coach Bill Peters will also face his former employer, the Carolina Hurricanes, in a pair of games on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in Calgary, and Sunday, Feb. 3 in Raleigh.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, Jan. 17

Toronto-Tampa Bay:
The Maple Leafs hit the road for the Sunshine State stretch against the Lightning and Florida Panthers. The public is investing heavily in the home side despite the fact the Maple Leafs are an impressive 15-6 in the past 21 road games while going 10-1 in their past 11 while playing on two or more days of rest. The Lightning will be playing in their fourth game in six days, and they're 23-6 in the past 29 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation. The public is likely backing the Lightning heavily, either straight-up or on the puck line, because of Toronto's woes in this series recently. The Leafs are 2-8 in their past 10 trips to Tampa, and 1-5 in the past six meetings overall. The 'under' is also 8-3 in the past 11 metings in this series.

Winnipeg-Nashville:
The Jets roll into the Music City with five victories in the past six games overall, and they're 7-2 in the past nine attempts against a team with a winning overall record. In addition, Winnipeg has posted an 8-3 record across the past 11 on the road. The Predators are equally hot, going 4-0 in their past four against teams with a winning percentage over .600. Total bettors might be slapping the 'over', which is 4-0 in Smashville's past four overall and 5-2 in the past seven against the Western Conference. While the over is 8-1-2 in the past 11 road games by a team with a home winning percentage over .600, the under is 7-3-1 in the past 11 overall and 3-1-1 in the past five against winning teams. The over is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings in Nashville, and the road team has claimed four of the past five.

Los Angeles-Dallas:
The Kings are Stars are both struggling, so something's gotta give in this one. The Kings are 2-5 in the past seven overall, while they're just 7-19 in the past 26 games away from home. For Dallas, they have dropped four of the past five overall, although they're a solid 11-4 in the past 15 against Pacific Division foes. The Kings are just 1-5 in the past six against the Stars, although the road team is 4-1 in the past five. While the under has been the play for both teams lately, going 8-2 in L.A.'s past 10, and 5-0-1 in the past six for Dallas, the 'over' is 7-3-4 in the past 14 meetings in this series.

Friday, Jan. 18

N.Y. Islanders-Washington:
It might be rather overlooked, but the Capitals will welcome Stanley Cup champion head coach Barry Trotz to town on Friday night. It will be his first visit to D.C. since leaving after last season's title, failing to agree to terms on a new deal after the franchise's first championship. Washington greeted him rudely on the Island in the first meeting on Nov. 26, winning 4-1 behind Braden Holtby. He has been on the shelf with an injury, so it's likely Pheonix Copley gets the starting nod. The Capitals are 0-2-1 over Copley's past three starts, getting outscored 13-4 in the process.

Buffalo-Vancouver:
The Sabres continue their road trip against the Canucks in the Pacific Northwest, and the home side is a slight favorite over the skidding side from Buffalo. The Sabres picked up a much-needed win, and a rather impressive one, in Calgary on Wednesday. Buffalo posted a 4-3 win in overtime thanks to superstar Jack Eichel just 70 seconds into the extra session. Vancouver is looking to bounce back after a 3-2 setback against the Edmonton Oilers in a shootout on Wednesday. They're looking for revenge after losing a 4-3 shootout in Buffalo on Nov. 10 earlier in the season, too. The Canucks are 5-2-2 over their past nine at home.

Saturday, Jan. 19

Anaheim-New Jersey:
The Ducks and Devils will drop the puck at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday in Newark, or 10:00 a.m. PT, the local clock of the Ducks. It could be a sluggish start for a team not playing all that way lately. Anaheim enters 0-5-2 in their past seven against Eastern Conference teams, last winning in Pittsburgh of all places on Dec. 17 by a 4-2 count. They also were able to beat the Devils in a shootout by a 6-5 count back on Dec. 9, as John Gibson outdueled Cory Schneider. The Ducks lost 5-3 last season in Newark on Dec. 18, and they haven't won in New Jersey since Dec. 19, 2015.

Philadelphia-Montreal:
The Flyers and Canadiens do battle for the first time this season, and they're set to meet three times between now and March 19. Philly might be showing signs of snapping out of their funk, winning back-to-back games Monday and Wednesday. It's the first time the Fly Guys had consecutive wins in regulation since Dec. 18-20. Their season high, accomplished once, was a three-game run from Nov. 5-10, sweeping a home-and-home with Arizona before blanking Chicago. All-Star goaltender Carey Price is back, posting a solid 18-13-4 mark with a 2.65 goals-against average and .912 save percentage as of Thursday AM. He also has three shutouts to his credit.

Pittsburgh-Vegas:
The Golden Knights welcome the Penguins to town, and Marc-Andre Fleury will likely be in the crease for this one. Malcolm Subban started the first meeting the Steel City back on Oct. 11, as the Pens posted a 4-2 victory behind Casey DeSmith. Matt Murray will likely be holding down the fort in this one. In the only previous meeting in Sin City last season, Fleury bested Murray, his former understudy, by a 2-1 margin on Dec. 14, 2017. The 'under' is 7-2-1 across the past 10 outings heading into Saturday's showdown. On the flip side, the Pens have a 4-0 'over' mark across their past four road games heading into Friday's battle in Arizona. They have the difficult task of back-to-back desert games, while Vegas enters well rested and off since Tuesday.
