Miller leads Lightning past Flyers for seventh straight win
February 19, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) J.T. Miller had a goal and an assist, and the Tampa Bay Lightning used a fast start to win their seventh straight, beating the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Alex Killorn, Mikhail Sergachev and Yanni Gourde also scored, and Ryan McDonagh added an empty-netter for Tampa Bay (46-11-4, 96 points), which entered 15 points ahead of Calgary for the most in the league. The Lightning were 16 points clear of Boston, the Eastern Conference's next-best team, beginning Tuesday.

Louis Domingue made 28 saves in place of Andrei Vasilevskiy, who rested after making 39 stops in the Lightning's 5-1 win at Columbus on Monday night. Domingue improved to 19-4.

Oskar Lindblom and Travis Konecny scored for Philadelphia, which lost for just the third time in the last 15 contests.

BLUES 3, MAPLE LEAFS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Ryan O'Reilly scored 34 seconds into overtime and St. Louis beat Toronto for its franchise-record 11th straight win.

Jaden Schwartz and Colton Parayko also scored and Tyler Bozak had two assists for the Blues. Jordan Binnington made 29 saves to win his ninth straight, extending the longest winning streak in franchise history for a rookie goaltender.

Zach Hyman and Auston Matthews scored third-period goals as the Maple Leafs erased a 2-0 deficit. Frederik Andersen made 38 saves.

Hyman scored at 6:34 of the third, snapping the Blues' shutout streak at 233:50.

PREDATORS 5, STARS 3

DALLAS (AP) - Roman Josi scored the go-ahead goal with 12:25 to play and added an empty-netter to lift Nashville over Dallas.

Josi skated from behind the net into the slot, and his wrist shot hit defenseman Esa Lindell's skate and popped over goalie Anton Khudobin. Nashville won for the second time in six games to move within a point of Central Division leader Winnipeg.

Dallas is 1-4-1 in its past six games.

Filip Forsberg tied the game at 3 with 1:44 left in the second period, 21 seconds after the Stars took their first lead with goals 26 seconds apart by Lindell on the power play and Tyler Seguin.

PENGUINS 4, WILD 3

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Bryan Rust scored a tiebreaking goal midway through the second period and Pittsburgh continued its playoff push and avoided the embarrassment of being swept by lowly New Jersey.

Defenseman Chad Ruhwedel, Nick Bjugstad and Zach Aston-Reese also scored for Pittsburgh, which has won four of its last five in its bid to make the playoffs for the 13th straight year. The streak is the longest active playoff run in the NHL.

Matt Murray made 33 saves, including 15 in the third period, to help the Penguins salvage the final game in the four-game season series.

Jesper Bratt, Marcus Johansson and Miles Wood scored for the Devils, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Keith Kinkaid had 24 saves in losing to the Penguins for the first time in four games this season.

DUCKS 4, WILD 0

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Ryan Miller made 31 saves for his 44th career shutout as Anaheim beat Minnesota.

Jakob Silfverberg, Corey Perry, Ryan Kesler and Hampus Lindholm scored to help Anaheim get its third win in four games.

Miller got his second win in two starts since returning from a knee injury that sidelined him for 24 games. His latest came two days after he set the all-time wins record for a U.S.-born goalie with a victory over Washington. He now has 376 for his career.

Devan Dubnyk finished with 20 saves in Minnesota's fifth straight loss. The Wild have been shut out in consecutive games for the first time all season and haven't scored in the last 156 minutes.

RANGERS 2, HURRICANES 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Vladislav Namestikov scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, giving New York a win over Carolina.

Connor Brickley also scored for the Rangers, who earned a split of a four-game road trip and handed the Hurricanes just their third loss this month. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 43 shots to get his 17th win of the season.

Jordan Martinook scored and Curtis McElhinney finished with 24 saves for Carolina, which had won six of its previous seven games - including its first road win over the Rangers since Oct. 2010. The victory on Feb. 8 ended a 16-game losing streak at New York, but the Rangers were able to return the favor on the Hurricanes' home ice.

CANADIENS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2

MONTREAL (AP) - Tomas Tatar scored in the third period to lift Montreal over Columbus.

The victory was Montreal's first since Feb. 4 and ended a four-game skid. Paul Byron and Max Domi also scored, and Carey Price made 31 saves.

? Over/under on points for North Carolina: 78.5

? Largest lead of game for either side: 17.5

? Over/under on points for Cody White: 16.5

? Over/under on points for Zion Williamson: 23.5

Quote of the Day
?if you ever find you?re the most talented person in the room, you need to find another room.?
Nick Saban

Wednesday?s quiz
Which Big 14 school has won the most league championships in basketball?

Tuesday?s quiz
Mike Woodson was the Knicks? coach the last time they made the playoffs, in 2012-13.

Monday?s quiz
Michael Jordan played baseball for the Birmingham Barons of the AA Southern League; they were a farm club of the White Sox.

****************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings?..

13) Manny Machado signs on with the Padres for 10 years, $300M; interesting move.

12) Las Vegas dropped San Diego from 80-1 to 50-1 to win the World Series. Before you book a flight to the desert to bet on the Padres, here are their starting pitchers:

? Joey Lucchesi
? Robbie Erlin
? Bryan Mitchell
? Eric Lauer
? Luis Perdomo

Padres got lot more interesting Tuesday; don?t think they became a playoff team.

11) From Christopher Kamka, a great researcher:
Bruce Bochy:
? has the most career home runs of any MLB player born in France (26)
? is the only player to hit a walk-off homer off of Nolan Ryan (July 1, 1985)

10) Purdue 48, Indiana 46? A fierce struggle, an ugly, hard-fought game where the better team won on the road. Carsen Edwards is Purdue?s best player but he was awful: 4-24 from floor, 0-10 on arc? Boilermakers won anyway.

9) Rick Pitino?s pro team in Greece won the Greek Cup tournament over the weekend; one of the highlights of this spring will be if a college team (UCLA, UNLV?) tries to hire him, to revive their struggling program. Will take a college president who is secure in his job, since Pitino comes with some off-court baggage.

There are rumors out in the desert that Pitino could be coaching the Rebels next year.

8) I?m disappointed that Phillies? P Aaron Nola isn?t from New Orleans, but he is from Baton Rouge, so same state at least.

7) SouthPoint sportsbook in Las Vegas has written seven tickets on the St Louis Blues to win the Stanley Cup, at 300-1 odds. Right now, the Blues are having an unexpectedly good season and are only 12-1 to win the Cup.

6) Monday night, at the Columbus-Tampa Bay NHL game, Pierre McGuire was reporting for NBC Sports Network, in a booth right at center-ice.

The pucks flies off the ice, goes about three inches in front of McGuire?s face (he wears glasses), and smashes into a camera that captured the whole thing. Had to be pretty scary.

5) Former Bengals? coach Marvin Lewis is doing AAF games on TV; he isn?t bad. I think more ex-coaches should be TV game analysts; they?ve thought the game through more than ex-players.

4) Right now, the New York Jets have only 39 players under contract for next year, fewest in NFL- they have over $100M available in salary cap space.

3) Sean McDermott has been coach of the Buffalo Bills for two years, but the Bills have only five players left under contract who were Bills before McDermott got there.

2) Dayton 74, Davidson 73? Flyers blew a 19-point lead, but hit a foul shot with 0:02.2 left for the win. Second straight one-point game for Dayton.

1) RIP Don Newcombe, 92, who passed away Tuesday. Newcombe pitched in the major leagues for 12 years, mostly for the Brooklyn Dodgers; he also pitched for the Reds and Indians? his record was 149-90, with a career-best 27-7 in 1956.

At the end of his career, Newcombe went over and played outfield in Japan for a year; he was that good a hitter. He hit .273 in the major leagues, in 878 career at-bats. RIP, sir.

Kane scores 2, Blackhawks beat Red Wings 5-4 in OT
February 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) Patrick Kane scored two goals, including the game winner with 2:18 left in overtime, extending his point streak to 19 games and lifting the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

Artem Anisimov, Brandon Saad and Alex DeBrincat scored for Chicago in the first period. The Blackhawks have won 10 of their last 12 games, scoring 60 goals in that span.

Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou scored two goals each for the Red Wings, who rallied from a 4-1 third-period deficit to tie it.

However, Erik Gustafsson found Kane alone to the right of the net in overtime, and the Chicago star beat goalie Jonathan Bernier for his 38th goal of the season.

FLAMES 4, ISLANDERS 2

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Austin Czarnik and Johnny Gaudreau scored 29 seconds apart in the third period to lead Calgary.

Mikael Backlund and Travis Hamonic also scored as Calgary won its third straight after a four-game skid. Mike Smith stopped 17 shots.

Casey Cizikas and Anders Lee scored for the Islanders, who had tied it earlier in the third after trailing 2-0 following one period. Thomas Greiss finished with 28 saves in New York's third regulation loss in 16 games.

AVALANCHE 7, JETS 1

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Calvert scored 11 seconds apart in the third period, Semyon Varlamov made 26 saves in another strong performance and Colorado won two in a row for the first time since late November.

Carl Soderberg, Mikko Rantanen, Tyson Jost, Gabriel Landeskog and A.J. Greer also scored for the Avalanche. In addition, MacKinnon's power-play goal snapped an 0-for-29 dry spell on the man advantage.

The only score Varlamov allowed was to Kyle Connor with Colorado staked to a 4-0 lead.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 39 shots for the Jets, who lost to the Avalanche for the second time inside of a week.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Six states in this country where a case of beer is most expensive:

1) Alaska $31.21

2) Wyoming $26.68

3) Hawai?i $22.39

4) Montana $22.28

5) Tennessee $22.25

6) Vermont $21.56

Quote of the Day
?I didn?t know what to do. I?d wake up, my wife would drag me to this yoga class that she does. I?d have coffee with my wife and her friends and we?d talk about the Real Housewives of something.?
Former Iowa State/Bulls? coach Fred Hoiberg

Thursday?s quiz

Who led the major leagues in stolen bases last year?

Wednesday?s quiz
Purdue (23) has won the most Big 14 basketball championships.

Tuesday?s quiz
Mike Woodson was the Knicks? coach the last time they made the playoffs, in 2012-13.

**********************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud?..

13) Joel Embiid played 23:00 in Sunday?s NBA All-Star Game; now comes news that Embiid will miss the next week with a sore left knee. No bueno.

Embiid missed all of the first two seasons of his career because of injuries, and then he missed 51 games in his third year. This is his fifth year.

Over this season and the next four years, Philadelphia will pay Embiid $146M; playing for the 76ers is more important than playing in the damn All-Star Game.

12) Will the Big East get more than two teams in the NCAA?s?

As of Wednesday morning. Villanova/Marquette are locks for the tournament, but no one else in the league is ranked in KenPom?s top 50.

Joe Lunardi has St John?s as a 9-seed, Seton Hall as a 10-seed, so if they don?t stumble in the next three weeks, they?ll probably to get in, because nationally, this is a down year for quality teams. There will be a few teams in the NCAA?s this year that aren?t really that good.

Big East had six teams in NCAA?s last year, seven the year before, so even if St John?s/Seton Hall both get in the field of 68, it is a down year for the league.

11) Florida State?s Mfiondu Kabengele is the only player in the country who leads his team in scoring, but hasn?t started one game this season.

10) Georgetown 85, Villanova 73? Wildcats lost their third straight road games, as Patrick Ewing?s Hoyas improve to 16-10, 6-7 in Big East.

9) Mississippi State 68, Georgia 67? Georgia fan threw a small stuffed bulldog on the court while Miss State was shooting a foul shot with 0:00.5 left and game tied. Kid missed the first of two foul shots, but a technical foul was called, he made the second one, then missed the third foul shot on purpose as MSU escapes Athens with a road win.

8) Upsets of the Night:
? Air Force (+14.5) 64, Fresno State 61
? North Carolina (+9) 88, Duke 72
? San Diego State (+8.5) 65, Nevada 57
? Xavier (+6.5) 70, Seton Hall 69
? Northern Iowa (+6) 63, Missouri State 43
? Georgetown (+5.5) 85, Villanova 73
? Florida (+5.5) 82, LSU 77, OT

7) Kentucky?s big man Reid Travis sprained his knee Tuesday night, is expected to be out until the SEC tournament, which starts in three weeks.

6) Watching the first two weeks of the AAF, it seems like it might become a throwback league, a throwback to a time where teams ran the ball a lot instead of passing it all the time.

Why? Because the quality of QB?s in the AAF ain?t that good. When Mike Martz reverts to a run-based attack, and then it works, you realize that this league might be a little different, not better or worse than expected, just different. More like old-school football.

5) Joe Gibbs has had an underrated career, parlaying being a great NFL coach with his tremendous success as a NASCAR owner. Very unique combination.

4) Franklin Pierce is the only first-term American President who had been elected president and then was denied re-nomination four years later; four other Presidents didn?t win their party?s nomination in the next election either, but all four of those guys became president because their predecessor passed away.

3) At halftime of the Villanova-Georgetown game last night, FOX?s Gus Johnson gave a very nice tribute to a young man who passed away in a car accident recently. The man?s father is the stat guy on FOX?s broadcasts lot of the time. Johnson fought back tears as he spoke

2) North Carolina 88, Duke 72? Zion Williamson played 33 seconds in this game, hurt his knee and never returned. His foot went right thru his sneaker; never saw that before.

If you like to bet futures, this could change EVERYTHING; if Williamson is done for the year, Duke is in the ashcan as far as a national title goes- more than twice as much money has been bet on the Blue Devils to win the national title as has been wagered on any other team.

1) For some reason, betting over/unders on the first period of NHL games has become a hot topic in some corners of Twitter. Blackhawks are 47-13 over in the first period; Dallas Stars are 41-18 under. You get a trend that goes 47-13, and people get interested.

In the Crease - Week 22

Cup Connection

The New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers played in back-to-back seasons for the Stanley Cup. In 1983, the Islanders swept the Oilers in four games for their fourth consecutive championship. In 1984, Wayne Gretzky and the Glen Sather-coached Oilers had other ideas, ruining the 'One for the Thumb' pursuit which the Islanders still have never accomplished.

These historic NHL franchises will meet in Edmonton on Thursday night. The Islanders have overachieved this season, and are smack-dab in the middle of the playoff chase. The Oilers, well, at least they have 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1990 to fall back on, as they aren't likely to be back to a Stanley Cup Finals anytime soon despite the fact they employ one of the most dynamic scorers in the game. New York enters Thursday's game as slight road favorites despite being the more superior team. The Isles will be playing in a back-to-back situation, and they're 10-1 in their past 11 playing on zero days of rest. They're also 5-1 in the past six as a favorite, and 9-2 in the past 11 aginst Western Conference teams.

The Oilers have won just six of the past 26 meetings, and they're a dismal 2-12 in the past 14 games at home. In addition, they have dropped seven in a row against teams from the Eastern Conference, and they're 0-5 in the past five against Metropolitan Division foes. The good news, if there is any, is that Edmonton has won seven of the past eight at home against the Isles.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, Feb. 21

Washington at Toronto:
The Capitals have started to put things together after a skid before the All-Star break which culminated with a 6-3 loss in Toronto on Jan. 23. The Leafs limp home after a six-game road trip, going 3-2-1, but totaling just two goals over the past two outings. Meanwhile, the Caps have alternated wins and losses in each of the past seven games, winning in Los Angeles on Monday to wrap up a four-game road trip of their own. The Caps have won 13 of the past 19 in this series, and the favorite is 20-7 in the past 27 meetings. The 'over' is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings in Toronto, too.

San Jose at Pittsburgh:
We get a possible Stanley Cup Finals preview, although the Tampa Bay Lightning certainly have something to say about that. San Jose enters 5-0 in the past five road games while going 7-2 in the past nine overall. The Sharks are also 7-3 in the past 10 against teams with a winning record. The Penguins have won four of the past five, and they're 23-10 in the past 33 against Western Conference teams. While the Pens are 0-4 in the past four against teams with a winning record, Pittsburgh is 4-1 in their past five at home against San Jose.

St. Louis at Dallas:
The Blues hit the road for the Metroplex looking to stay hot. St. Louis has won eight in a row on the road, and they're 6-0 in the past six against teams with a losing record. They're also 7-0 in the past seven as a favorite. The Stars have been a little better, going 4-1 in the past five at home while hitting in nine of their past 13 as a home underdog. However, they're 1-5 in the past six overall while going 0-4 in the past four against teams with a winning record. It will be a test for the Blues, if they want to stay hot. St. Louis is 1-4 in the past five meetings, and the home team is 6-2 in the past eight in this series.

Friday, Feb. 22

Colorado at Chicago:
The Avalanche hit the road for Chicago, and they're just 16-35 in the past 51 as a road underdog. Colorado fired out of the chute this season, but they have won just eight of their past 31 games, too, going from a team which looked championship caliber to one which could easily miss the playoffs in the Western Conference. On the flip side, the Blackhawks looked to be dead in the water, made a coaching change, and suddenly they're red hot again. They have won 10 of the past 12 overall, they're 6-1 in the past seven at home and 4-0 in the past four as a favorite. The 'over' has also been the way to go on Chicago games, cashing in eight of their past 11 against the Central Division, while going 15-5-1 in their past 21 at home.

Winnipeg at Vegas:
The Jets land in Vegas looking to get untracked. They're just 2-5 in the past seven road games, although they are an impressive 10-4 in the past 14 against teams with a winning record. The Golden Knights have been skidding, which is about as rare as the snow which fell in Las Vegas this week. The Knights have won just one of the psat six overall, and they're 2-5 in the past seven against winning teams. Vegas is also just 1-6 in the past seven at home. The 'under' is also 5-1-1 in the past seven meetings in this series.

Saturday, Feb. 23

Boston at St. Louis:
Two of the hottest teams in the National Hockey League hook up in St. Louis in matinee action. The Blues will be looking to avenge a 5-2 loss in Beantown back on Jan. 17, as Tuukka Rask outperformed Josh Allen on that day. Even a month ago, Jordan Binnington was just bursting onto the scene and nobody knew he was going to be a game changer. The Blues won their 11th consecutive game on Tuesday, topping the Maple Leafs 3-2 in overtime. Boston won 3-2 on Wednesday in snowy Vegas (I know, it's still strange) in a shootout to fire out to a 4-0-0 record on their road trip, while picking up a seventh straight win.

Montreal at Toronto:
The Maple Leafs head into this one with a six-game winning streak in tow against the Canadiens, arguably their biggest rival. Three of the past six have been decided by one goal, however, and four of the past seven battles have been decided in overtime. Toronto has averaged 4.2 goals per game during the six-game winning streak against the Habs.

Anaheim at Edmonton:
The Ducks travel to meet the Oilers in what could only be termed the 'Disappointment Bowl'. These two teams expected so much more. While neither is out of the playoff chase in the Western Conference, they need wins like this one.

When the Ducks and Oilers get together, it has been a tight, hard-checking and close game. In fact, eight of the past nine have been one-goal games, with six of those outings decided either in overtime or a shootout. Four straight battles in Edmonton have resulted in overtime or a shootout, and five consecutive battles in Alberta between these two teams has resulted in a one-goal game. In fact, over the past 11 meetings in this series the teams have both scored 30 goals. That's how close it has been.

Sunday, Feb. 24

St. Louis at Minnesota:
The Blues have been red-hot lately, including a 4-0 win in St. Paul on Feb. 17. In a scheduling quirk these teams meet for the second consecutive Sunday. Despite that loss last week, the Wild are actually 5-1 in the past six regular season meetings. So far this season the road team is a perfect 3-0, too. Over the past 10 meetings in this series the Wild has outscored the Blues 36-23.

Ovechkin's milestone goal leads Capitals past Toronto 3-2
February 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) Alex Ovechkin scored the 650th goal of his career and Braden Holtby made 40 saves as the Washington Capitals defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Thursday night.

Tom Wilson had a goal and an assist, and Brett Connolly also scored for Washington, which won consecutive games for the first time in two weeks. Lars Eller added two assists.

Andreas Johnsson and John Tavares scored for Toronto. Frederik Andersen made 25 stops.

The Leafs, who were playing at home for the first time since Feb. 6 following a season-long six-game trip that ended with a 3-2-1 record, entered 7-2-2 over their last 11, but had also dropped two straight.

The Capitals, meanwhile, were 6-3-1 over their previous 10 after a 0-5-2 stretch that culminated with a 6-3 loss at Scotiabank Arena on Jan. 23.

LIGHTNING 2, SABRES 1

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Nikita Kucherov became the fastest player to 100 points in a season since Mario Lemieux, and he and Steven Stamkos scored in the shootout to lift Tampa Bay.

Kucherov became the league's first 100-point player this season with his 30th goal. He got there in 62 games, one more than it took Lemieux in 1996-97.

Andrei Vasilevskiy had 29 saves and stopped both shootout attempts he faced. The Lightning have won eight straight and earned points in 12 in a row (10-0-2).

Rasmus Dahlin scored for Buffalo, and Carter Hutton stopped 39 shots.

Kucherov is the first player in Lightning franchise history to record multiple 100-point seasons and is the seventh player in the past 20 years with back-to-back such campaigns.

SHARKS 4, PENGUINS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Tomas Hertl scored a pair of first-period power-play goals, Martin Jones stopped 26 shots and San Jose took advantage of sloppy play by Pittsburgh Penguins.

Brent Burns picked up his 12th of the season, and Evander Kane added a short-handed goal for the Sharks, who beat Casey DeSmith three times in the opening 14 minutes and kept the Penguins in check the rest of the way to sweep the season series from the team that edged them in six games in the 2016 Stanley Cup Final.

The Sharks have won eight of 10 overall and pulled within one point of Calgary for the top spot in the Pacific Division.

DeSmith finished with 29 saves, but Pittsburgh stumbled out of the gate and never recovered to lose for just the second time in six games.

HURRICANES 4, PANTHERS 3

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Justin Williams had two goals and an assist and Carolina rallied for two goals down to beat Florida.

Nino Niederreiter had a goal and an assist, and Justin Faulk also scored a goal Florida, which has won seven of its last nine games. Peter Mrazek made 27 saves.

Aleksander Barkov, Evgenii Dadonov and Jonathan Huberdeau each had a goal and an assist for the Panthers, whose three-game winning streak was snapped. James Reimer stopped 21 shots in his fourth consecutive start.

DEVILS 4, SENATORS 0

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Cory Schneider made 30 saves in posting his first shutout since November 2017 and New Jersey beat undermanned Ottawa in a game in which both teams gave indications they were getting ready to make trades in the next few days.

Travis Zajac, Steven Santini, Kurtis Gabriel and Miles Wood scored for the Devils, who won for the third time in four games.

Anders Nilsson had 27 saves for the Senators, whose 22-33-5 record is the worst in the NHL this season.

Mark Stone, Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel, the Senators' first, second- and fourth-leading scorers, were all healthy scratches.

WILD 4, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Zach Parise had a goal and an assist, and Minnesota ended a five-game skid with a win over New York.

Mikael Granlund and Jared Spurgeon also scored and Jordan Greenway added an empty-netter. Devan Dubnyk made 33 saves for the Wild, who earned their first victory since Feb. 9 at New Jersey.

Despite their recent struggles, the Wild are still in the race for one of the final playoff spots in the Western Conference.

Pavel Buchnevich scored for the Rangersm and Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves.

CANADIENS 5, FLYERS 1

MONTREAL (AP) - Brendan Gallagher earned his first career hat trick and Montreal defeated Philadelphia.

Rookie Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Tomas Tatar also scored for the Canadiens, who won their second straight. Carey Price stopped 29 shots for his 25th victory of the season.

Michael Raffl scored in the third period for the Flyers, who have dropped two straight after winning three in a row.

Flyers goalie Carter Hart gave up three goals on nine shots before being pulled 10:33 into the game. It was the second straight game Hart was yanked. Brian Elliott stopped 29 of 31 shots in relief.

PREDATORS 2, KINGS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Roman Josi had a goal and an assist as the Nashville topped Los Angeles and moved atop the Central Division with its third win in four games.

The Predators have 77 points, one more than Winnipeg (76), though the Jets have three games in hand on Nashville.

Kyle Turris scored for Nashville, which also swept the season series with Los Angeles. Goalie Pekka Rinne made 28 saves for the win.

Michael Amadio scored for the Kings, who are 0-4-2 in losing their sixth straight.

STARS 5, BLUES 2

DALLAS (AP) -Jamie Benn had his first multi-goal game since early October and Dallas ended St. Louis' franchise-record 11-game winning streak.

When Benn scored the game's first goal 3:46 into the second period, the Blues trailed for the first time since Feb. 5 - a span of more than 517 minutes on the ice over 10 games.

Radek Faksa and Alexander Radulov put Dallas up 3-0 with goals in a 65-second span midway through the second period. Tyler Seguin also scored for the Stars, who snapped a three-game losing streak in which they were shut out twice. Anton Khudobin stopped 43 shots while starting his seventh consecutive game for the Stars.

Vladimir Tarasenko and Ryan O'Reilly scored for St. Louis.

OILERS 4, ISLANDERS 3, OT

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Connor McDavid scored in overtime and added an assist as Edmonton snapped a five-game losing streak.

Leon Draisaitl, Sam Gagner and Oscar Klefbom also scored for the Oilers, who have won two games out of their last 13.

Anders Lee, Brock Nelson and Cal Clutterbuck scored for the Islanders, who have lost two straight.

Friday?s 6-pack

Hitters who knocked in highest %age of runners in from 3rd base LY (min, 200 PA)

1) Lourdes Gurriel, Tor 14-21 (66.7%)

2) Jake Lamb, 14-23 (60.9%)

3) Yuli Gurriel, Hst 34-61 (55.7%)

5) Matt Wieters, Wsh 15-27 (55.6%)

6) Jedd Gyorko 21-39 (53.8%)

Quote of the Day
?Players don?t care how much you know until they know how much you care.?
Old coaching axiom

Friday?s quiz
Who replaced John Wooden as the basketball coach at UCLA?
(Hint: his son is coaching a D-I team this season)

Thursday?s quiz
Whit Merrifield led the major leagues in stolen bases last year, with 45.

Wednesday?s quiz
Purdue (23) has won the most Big 14 basketball championships.

*****************************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here??.

13) Zion Williamson supposedly has a Grade 1 sprained knee; no one is saying how long he is out for. ?Day-to-day? is the official word; seemed to me Wednesday that his injury wasn?t a minor thing. Hope the young man does what is best for him; he has a lot of money sitting on the table, waiting for him to grab it this spring/summer.

Then there is the other side of the coin??.

Kenyon Martin played college ball at Cincinnati; he was the #1 pick in the 2000 NBA draft. Martin broke his leg in the C-USA tournament his senior season, a situation not unlike Williamson?s Wednesday.

Martin went on to earn $113,035,975 in his NBA career, so most injuries do heal.

12) Bucks 98, Celtics 97? Is Milwaukee the quietest 44-14 team ever?

11) Cavaliers 111, Suns 98? Phoenix and the Knicks both have 11 wins; they play each other March 6. Will either team win a game before then?

10) Pittsburgh Steelers let star RB Le?Veon Bell walk; he will be a free agent when the new NFL year starts next month. Looks like Steelers will be without Bell and Antonio Brown, which means a much different offensive look for them next fall.

9) Western Kentucky is getting coach Rick Stansbury back this weekend; he had back surgery last weekend and has missed the last four games.

8) Steve Stricker will be the captain of the American team the next time they hold the Ryder Cup; he will be the first American captain ever who hasn?t won a major tournament.

7) Upsets of the night in college hoop:
? SIU-Edwardsville (+6.5) 85, Tennessee State 84
? UL-Monroe (+5.5) 63, Texas State 60
? San Francisco (+4) 77, BYU 71

6) Saw an old film clip today of the great QB Sonny Jurgensen back when he was playing for the Eagles in the early 60?s; while being rushed, he throws a pass behind his back, and completes it to a running back in the left flat.

Apparently it was an exhibition game in 1961 against the college all-stars; back then, the NFL champs played the college all-stars in the first exhibition game the next summer. Jurgensen was a really good QB and also a bit of a character.

5) Statistic I never would?ve guessed; who has scored the most runs this decade? How about Ian Kinsler, with 851. I would?ve sat here for an hour and not come up with that one.

4) Arena Football League has expanded to six teams for this season, adding Atlantic City and Columbus, OH to the league, joining Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore and Albany.

3) AA Eastern League is moving to a split-season format, meaning the first/second half champs will meet in the playoffs. You wonder if the major leagues will consider something like that down the road someday, to re-boot interest in losing teams during the summer.

2) In case you were wondering, before the All-Star break, James Harden dribbled the ball 29,055 times, more than anyone else in the NBA.

1) Every time it snows here in beautiful upstate New York, I price condos in Las Vegas, but this week, it has snowed twice in Las Vegas, with the snow Wednesday night enough that there was a chance schools would be closed on Thursday. Their last school closing for snow was in 2008.

In case you were wondering, the city of Las Vegas owns two snow plows. Two.

Blackhawks an Over bettor's dream and this weekend's NHL odds and analysis
Monty Andrews

The Chicago Blackhawks have become one of the best Over bets in the NHL ? and the fireworks could fly Friday night against a Colorado Avalanche team coming off a seven-goal outburst of its own. That matchup highlights an action-packed weekend on the ice, including the latest chapter in the Canadiens-Maple Leafs rivalry and the Winnipeg Jets looking to extend their dominance over Arizona. Here are the top matchups, betting tips and trends to monitor entering what should be a fun stretch of hockey.

Beware the Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks have been the most prolific team since the end of the All-Star break but will they meet their match? That's the question bettors are asking as the Blackhawks ? who have averaged 4.9 goals since returning from the break ? host a Colorado Avalanche team coming off an impressive 7-1 thumping of the powerhouse Winnipeg Jets. While Colorado is 19-5-2 O/U in its past 26 road games against teams with losing home records, the Blackhawks have an even more impressive Over trend going: they're 21-5-2 O/U in their last 28 games against sub-.500 teams.

Advantage: Maple Leafs

There was a time when the Toronto Maple Leafs couldn't buy a win over their long-time rivals from Montreal. But lately, it's the Canadiens who are starving for success as they visit the hated Leafs in a Saturday night showdown. Toronto has won six straight meetings in the head-to-head series, limiting Montreal to just 10 goals over that span. The Canadiens had been on the other end of the ledger for a while, winning 14 consecutive meetings prior to Toronto's recent dominance. The Leafs have also outscored the Canadiens by an eye-popping 11-4 margin in the previous three games at Scotiabank Arena.

Slumping Sabres

The Washington Capitals might be catching the Buffalo Sabres at the right time ? not that they need the help. The Capitals visit KeyBank Center having won 11 of their previous 13 trips to Buffalo dating back to the latter stages of the 2014-15 ? and if that weren't enough of a concern for Buffalo fans, their team is surrendering 4.0 goals per game since the All-Star break, the most of any team in the league. Offense has also been a major issue for the Sabres against the defending Stanley Cup champions, who have limited Buffalo to two or fewer goals in seven of their previous 11 meetings.

Jet Fuel

Sunday marks the latest meeting between the franchise that used to be in Winnipeg and the one that's based there now. The current version of the Jets has had its way with the former iteration in a significant way. Winnipeg has reeled off 14 victories in the previous 17 meetings with the Arizona Coyotes heading into their weekend tilt at Gila River Arena. That includes a five-game winning streak during which the Jets have piled up 23 goals while conceding just 11. The teams are averaging just under 6.5 goals per game over their previous 13 head-to-head encounters.

Goalie Profile: Ben Bishop, Dallas Stars

The Stars are clinging to a Western Conference wild card spot as the calendar drifts toward the end of February ? but unlike previous seasons, they have their goaltending to thank for even being in the playoff hunt. Bishop has been one of the most underappreciated goaltenders in the league this season, posting a 19-12-2 record with three shutouts while ranking fifth among qualified netminders in goals-against average (2.30) and tied for fifth in save percentage (.924). He's a major reason why the Stars are a respectable 17-16-3 SU in games in which they're outshot.

Injury Update: F Nazem Kadri, Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs' forward depth will take a hit, at least in the short term, after Kadri suffered a concussion in Tuesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues. Kadri was ruled out for Thursday's game against the Capitals, and it isn't known whether he will be available over the weekend. The 28-year-old had been struggling of late with two goals and an assists through 10 February games, but the Maple Leafs have been solid despite his slump, having gone 6-2-2 SU for the month. That said, Toronto is an incredible 19-3-1 SU in 22 games in which Kadri has recorded at least one point this season.

Hat Trick Trends

The Anaheim Ducks have garnered plenty of attention for their woeful scoring and lack of defense since the break ? but there's a team right on their heels in both regards. The Minnesota Wild are averaging the second-fewest goals per game in the second half (2.20), while their average goal differential of -1.50 is also second-worst in the league.

At the other end of the spectrum, two teams have stood out as dominant forces since the unofficial start of the second half of the season. The St. Louis Blues have the strongest average goal differential in the NHL over that stretch at +2.30, while the Tampa Bay Lightning ? the odds-on favorite to win the Stanley Cup ? are close behind at +2.09.

If you're looking for a sure thing on the totals side, taking the Stars to go Under on the road might be your best path to victory ? at least, if past trends continue. Dallas enters the weekend having gone an incredible 5-20-5 O/U away from American Airlines Center so far this season, making it by far the most profitable road Under play in the league.
