October 10, 2019
By The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) Jake Guentzel scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 2-1 victory over the previously unbeaten Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night.

Crosby also scored a power-play goal, his second of the season. He has multiple points in five of his last 10 games against Anaheim.

Matt Murray made 31 saves for the Penguins. He needs one more win to reach 100 in the NHL.

Pittsburgh concluded a season-opening, four-game homestand with a 2-2 record.

DALLAS (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau put a backhand past Dallas goalie Ben Bishop in a shootout and Calgary beat the Stars.

Tyler Seguin was the only one of three Stars who beat Calgary goalie David Rittich in the shootout. It was tied 1-1, with Sean Monahan beating Bishop before Gaudreau won the game on the last attempt in the first round.

Rittich had 34 saves, including the stop of a penalty shot awarded to Alexander Radulov with 21 seconds remaining in overtime.

Friday?s 6-pack

Odds to win the NBA title this year:

3-1? Lakers

4-1? Clippers

5-1? Bucks

8-1? Warriors, Rockets, 76ers

12-1? Jazz

15-1? Celtics, Nuggets

Quote of the Day
?Nobody cares. Nobody cares about your feelings. Nobody cares if you?re hurt. Nobody cares if you?re broke, rich. Nobody cares. Who cares? Be you. Go to work. Peace.?
Cowboys? DE DeMarcus Lawrence

Friday?s quiz
Tom Brady was drafted in the 18th round of the 1995 baseball draft by which major league team?

Thursday?s quiz
Tony Eason started, was replaced at QB by Steve Grogan in New England?s first Super Bowl, a 46-10 loss to Chicago.

Wednesday?s quiz
Burgess Meredith was famous for playing Rocky Balboa?s trainer in the Rocky movies; he was the Penguin on the old Batman TV series.

*******************

Friday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) Astros 6, Rays 1? Clock strikes midnight for the Cinderella Rays, who took Houston to the brink in this series, but Astros scored four runs in the first inning and that was that. ALCS will be New York-Houston, which should be very interesting.

12) Astros? ace Gerrit Cole had struck out at least one batter in 73 consecutive innings before he didn?t get a strikeout in the third inning last night; not only is that the longest such streak in the majors since 1961, the next highest streak was only 40 (Pedro Martinez, 1999).

11) Patriots 35, Giants 14? New England scored TD?s on a blocked punt and a fumble return; Giants also scored a TD on a fumble return. Game was 21-14 with 9:00 to play.

Total yardage was 427-213 NE; Giants had 10 first downs, four turnovers (-2).

10) South Point Casino in Las Vegas has interesting prop bets; what college team scores the first TD of the day, and then which team scores the most points.

Favorites for first TD:
7-1: Georgia, Oklahoma, Toledo
8-1: Indiana, Michigan

Favorite to score the most points Saturday: Louisiana Tech 8-1

9) Steph Curry scored 40 points in an exhibition game Thursday; Golden State has a much different roster as they open their new arena this fall- no Klay Thompson, Durant is gone, so there will be nights where Curry will have to go off for the Warriors to win.

8) Villanova/Seton Hall are the favorites to win Big East basketball this winter.

UCLA is picked to finish 8th in the Pac-12, which seems weird to type.

7) Over last 12 years, unbeaten NFL teams who are an underdog from Week 6 on are 7-6 ATS. 49ers fit that bill Sunday.

6) Pittsburgh Steelers apparently had a full-contract practice Wednesday, with the team 1-4 and sinking fast; that is unusual in the NFL. Looks like their #3 QB gets his first NFL start against the Chargers Sunday, in a game between two struggling franchises.

5) Phillies fired manager Gabe Kapler after two mediocre seasons where his players went in the tank on him in September both years. Oddly, the Phillies fired both trainers and their pitching coach, but invited all the other coaches back for next season.

If a new manager doesn?t get to pick his own coaches, that usually signals a bad job.

4) No idea why, but the last three years, San Jose State?s leading scorer has transferred out of the program all three years, which is why the Spartans are 9-45 in Mountain West games during that time.

Over the last 22 years, San Jose State has never won half its conference games, though they were 17-16 overall in 2010-11. Seems like a school in California should have at least some success.

3) UL-Monroe 24, Texas State 14? 3-3 WarHawks clinched the win/covered the spread with a TD with 1:46 left; Texas State completed 20-39 passes, but for only 92 yards.

2) 30 or so years ago, had some problems with my teeth and as a result I gave up Snickers bars, switching to the softer Three Musketeers candy bars.

This week, I had my first Snickers bars since then; they still taste great!!!

1) One of the best parts of coming to Las Vegas is meeting new people/making new friends, from all over the country. Thursday was a good day/night for that, making new friends from Ohio, New Jersey, Georgia and a few who live here in the desert. Overall, an excellent day.

RATTLING SABRES

The Buffalo Sabres look every bit like a team ready to end a lengthy playoff drought ? and Over bettors are reaping the benefits as the Sabres prepare to host the Florida Panthers on Friday night. Buffalo has won three of four to open the season and has been putting the puck in the net at a furious pace, having scored 18 goals through its first four games; that's a major reason why the Sabres are 3-1 O/U in that span.

With the Panthers having lost two of three to kick off the 2019-20 campaign while allowing 14 goals in those contests, there might be some value in the Buffalo/Over combo play.

TOO TIRED TO SCORE

It's hard to look at Saturday's encounter between the New Jersey Devils and host Boston Bruins and not wonder if fatigue might come into play on both sides of the ice. The Devils will be playing their third game in four nights in their third different city after facing the Flyers in Philadelphia and hosting the Edmonton Oilers earlier in the week.

Things might be even tougher for the Bruins, who finally play their home opener after kicking off the campaign with road encounters in Dallas, Arizona, Vegas and Colorado. Don't be surprised to see goals come at a premium in this one.

RUDE VISITORS

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators are on complete opposite ends of the competition spectrum ? and there's another trend working in their favor as they trek to the Canadian capital for a Saturday meeting of 1992 expansion cousins. Not only have the Lightning won two straight and three of the past four meetings between the teams, the visitor has gone 5-1 SU in the past six head-to-head encounters dating back to February 2018.

Not only that, but these teams have combined to score seven or more goals in seven of their last eight tilts ? so the Tampa/Over result and total is very much in play here.

SPEAKING OF GOALS

The Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks don't waste any time getting on the scoresheet when they face off against each other. The Pacific Division rivals renew hostilities Sunday night having combined for an incredible 28 goals in their previous three regular-season meetings.

In particular, the first period has been a goal-fest of absurd proportions, with the teams scoring a combined 12 goals in the opening 20 minutes of those three contests. And that's no fluke; the teams have combined for three or more first-period goals in five of their last seven encounters overall, so consider the Over on the first-period total.

GOALIE PROFILE: CARTER HART, PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

Might the Flyers finally have their franchise goaltender after decades of frustration and futility? That's certainly the hope, as Hart has Philadelphia off to a great start (entering Thursday night) with wins in each of his first two games to start the season.

Even more impressively, the 21-year-old has posted a sparkling 1.50 goals-against average to go along with a .946 save percentage and a shutout of the New Jersey Devils. The Flyers have given him plenty of offense so far ? scoring eight times in their first two games ? but if he continues to play this well, he won't need it.

INJURY UPDATE: D JOSH MORRISSEY, WINNIPEG JETS

The Jets hope to have Morrissey back in the lineup soon after he was a late scratch for Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Morrissey suffered an upper-body injury during warm-ups Sunday night, and was given the green light to return in Pittsburgh but didn't feel ready.

he Jets ultimately didn't need him ? they pulled out a 4-1 win over the Penguins ? but a longer absence could make things difficult for the Winnipeg defense corps. And that could make the Jets an even stronger Over play moving forward, especially with the high-flying Penguins heading to Manitoba for a Sunday rematch.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

? A flurry of goals have made the Over the prevailing trend through the opening week of the NHL season. Overs have converted 25 times compared to just 20 Unders ? and extra-time games have been the biggest catalyst, as you might expect, with overtime and shootout games going a red-hot 8-2 O/U.

? While it isn't all that surprising that road favorites are winning at a decent clip, the more shocking thing might be that there haven't been that many away faves at all. A whopping 37 of the 46 games played through Wednesday night have seen the home team favored; those teams are converting at a 62.2 percent clip, with road faves coming in at 66.7 percent.

Carolina beats Isles 5-2 for best start in franchise history
October 11, 2019
By The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Dougie Hamilton and Andrei Svechnikov each had a goal and an assist as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders 5-2 Friday night and improved to 5-0-0 for the first time in franchise history.

Teuvo Teravainen, Brett Pesce and Eric Haula also scored, and Nino Neiderreiter added a pair of assists for the Hurricanes, whose previous best start was 4-0-0 in 1995-96. Peter Mrazek stopped 17 of 19 shots in goal.

Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist, Johnny Boychuk scored and Jordan Eberle added two assists for the Islanders, who fell to 1-3-0 on the season.

The Islanders last faced Carolina in the second round of the playoffs in May. The Hurricanes swept New York in the series.

DUCKS 2, BLUE JACKETS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ryan Miller had 26 saves in his first start of the season and Anaheim beat Columbus.

Jakob Silverberg and Cam Fowler scored for the Ducks, who have won four of their first five to start the season. The 39-year-old Miller was terrific after being slotted in for starter John Gibson on the second night of a back-to-back.

Pierre-Luc Dubois scored for Columbus, and Joonas Korpisalo had 22 saves.

SABRES 3, PANTHERS 2, SO

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Casey Mittelstadt and Jack Eichel scored shootout goals and Buffalo matched its best start to a season in 10 years with a win over Florida.

Kyle Okposo set up goals by Johan Larsson and defenseman Marco Scandella. Zemgus Girgensons also had two assists.

Buffalo improved to 4-0-1 under new coach Ralph Krueger, and opened with three straight home wins for the first time since 2008-09.

Saturday?s 6-pack

Odds to win the college basketball title next April:

9-2? Michigan State

5-1? Kansas

8-1? Duke, Kentucky, Memphis

12-1? Louisville

15-1? Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia

18-1? Michigan, Villanova

Quote of the Day
?Cousins, I think every defense is going to want that guy to throw the ball. For me, that?s probably the weakest part of their offense is him. Everything else is good. They?ve got a good running game, probably one of the best in the league. They?ve got real good receivers. You just want them to pass the ball. You want Kirk Cousins to get it in his hands.?
Eagles? LB Zach Brown; the Eagles play Minnesota Sunday

Saturday?s quiz
Tony Bennett won the national title coaching Virginia LY; before coming to Virginia, Bennett went 32-22 in Pac-12 games coaching at which school?

Friday?s quiz
Tom Brady was drafted as a catcher in the 18th round of the 1995 baseball draft by the Montreal Expos.

Thursday?s quiz
Tony Eason started, was replaced at QB by Steve Grogan in New England?s first Super Bowl, a 46-10 loss to Chicago.

*****************************

Saturday?s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here??..

13) Nationals 2, Cardinals 0? St Louis scored ten runs in the top of the first inning Wednesday, then they came home and got one hit here.

Anibal Sanchez is the first pitcher EVER to throw 6+ innings and allow one or no hits in two playoff games.

Mike Muchlinski was the home plate ump here; he umped Max Scherzer?s no-hitter in 2015 and also a 2013 game when Sanchez struck out 17 batters.

12) Oregon 45, Colorado 3? Ducks allowed total of 22 points in winning their last four games against I-A opponents. Colorado went in the tank in the second half here.

11) In six games this season, New England opponents have only had four drives (out of 72) where they ran a play in the Patriots? red zone. New England?s offense has 25 such drives.

10) Steelers? QB Mason Rudolph is officially out Sunday with a concussion, meaning Devlin Hodges will get his first NFL start; Paxton Lynch was promoted from the practice squad to be the backup QB.

Rams? CB Aqib Talib (ribs) is out Sunday; Todd Gurley (quad) is doubtful.

Neither of the Cowboys? starting OT?s practiced Friday. a red flag.

9) Washington Redskins will start Case Keenum at QB Sunday in Miami, in Bill Callahan?s first game as the interim coach. Expect Keenum to hand off a lot.

8) Living in Denver must be weird; at 2pm Wednesday, it was 79 degrees- at 2pm Thursday, it was 24 degrees, the 15th-largest temperature drop in Denver history.

7) MLB sources say that a player who accepts a qualifying offer this winter will get a one-year, $17.8M contract next season, down from $17.9M this year. It?s the first time the value of the qualifying offer has ever dropped from one year to the next.

6) XFL players will earn an average of $55,000, when the new football league starts in February; by way of contrast, the minimum salary in the NFL is $495,000.

5) From Ralph Michaels: Since 2015, home favorites in Game 1 of a baseball playoff series:
? If a favorite of -$135 or less: 3-7
? If a favorite of -$136 or more: 20-3

4) Heard this yesterday and while it isn?t new news, it does raise an eyebrow; UNLV?s basketball team hasn?t been in the NCAA?s since 2013. Long time. 30 years ago, UNLV basketball was like Gonzaga is now; a huge fish in a tiny pond (Big West Conference) that more than held its own nationally. Gonzaga is in the WCC, also a fairly small pond

3) Red Sox led the major leagues this year, winning eight (out of 45) games where they trailed by 4+ runs at some point in the game.

Minnesota was the only team that didn?t win a game (0-35) when they trailed by 4+ runs.

2) NFL coaches are 1-21 on pass interference challenges; NFL appeased the Saints by putting in a rule they don?t seem to want to enforce. Go figure.

1) RIP to the outstanding actor Robert Forster, 78, who passed away Friday; I remember him most from the terrific movie Jackie Brown, where he played a bail bondsman, and also from a 2-part episode of Magnum PI, where he played an old Army buddy of Magnum. RIP, sir.

Blue Jackets snap Hurricanes' season-opening 5-game streak
October 12, 2019
By The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Markus Nutivaara, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Pierre-Luc Dubios scored and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat Carolina 3-2 Saturday night, ending the best start to a season in Hurricanes' franchise history.

Dubois overpowered Brock McGinn on a rush from the opposite blue line and lifted a backhander past James Reimer, snapping a 2-all tie 75 seconds into the third period and Columbus made the lead stand up.

Joonas Korpisalo stopped 30 of 32 shots and Ryan Murray and Alexander Wennberg each had two assists for the Blue Jackets.

Erik Haula and Dougie Hamilton scored for the Hurricanes, who entered the game with a 5-0-0 record for the first time in franchise history. Carolina had outscored its opponents 11-5 in the last two games.

CAPITALS 4, STARS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Tom Wilson and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored power-play goals, rookie goalie Ilya Samsonov won again in his second career start and Washington earned its first regulation victory in Dallas in 24 years.

The last time Washington won in regulation in Dallas, the Stars still played at Reunion Arena. It was a 4-3 victory on Oct. 17, 1995. Dallas was 13-0-4 in that stretch.

Samsonov stopped the first 19 shots before Radek Faksa rammed in a wraparound midway through the third. Samsonov finished with 24 saves and has stopped 49 of 51 shots in two starts.

Anton Khudobin had 21 saves in his second start.

John Carlson scored when a failed breakout by Dallas turned into a 4-on-1 for the Capitals. Alex Ovechkin scored an empty-netter in the final minute.

KINGS 7, PREDATORS 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Alex Iafallo scored the tiebreaking goal with 59 seconds to play, and Los Angeles blew a three-goal lead in the third period before winning its home opener under new coach Todd McLellan.

Iafallo got his first goal of the season on a rebound of Dustin Brown's shot before Brown and Drew Doughty added empty-net goals seven seconds apart, sending the Kings to the 1,000th home victory in franchise history and a wild start to their 20th season at Staples Center.

Ilya Kovalchuk and Michael Amadio each had a goal and an assist. Anze Kopitar and Kyle Clifford also scored for the Kings.

Viktor Arvidsson, Matt Duchene and Colton Scissons scored in the first 11 + minutes of the third period for the Preds. Mikael Granlund also scored, while Ryan Ellis and Ryan Johansen had two assists apiece.

Jack Campbell made 28 saves for Los Angeles, and Juuse Saros stopped 30 shots for Nashville.

OILERS 4, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Connor McDavid scored the tiebreaking goal and Leon Draisaitl had two goals and an assist, all in the third period, as Edmonton beat New York and extended its season-opening win streak to five games.

Oscar Klefbom had a goal and an assist, McDavid also had an assist, and Mike Smith stopped 20 shots to help Edmonton complete a sweep of the New York area teams.

Edmonton, 5-0-0 for the first time in 34 years, became the first team in NHL history to win its first five games after trailing in each.

Rookie Kaapo Kakko had his first NHL goal for the Rangers, who had won their first two games but were playing for the first time in a week. Henrik Lundqvist finished with 23 saves.

SENATORS 4, LIGHTNING 2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Vladislav Namestnikov scored his first two goals for his new team late in the third period and Ottawa beat Tampa Bay for its first win of the season.

Colin White and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scored as the Senators ended a franchise-worst 0-3-0 start. Craig Anderson stopped 19 shots.

Ondrej Palat and Luke Witkowski scored for Tampa Bay, and Curtis McElhinney stopped 30 shots.

It was the third-straight game the Senators faced a backup goalie, as McElhinney started for the Lightning instead of reigning Vezina Trophy winner Andrei Vasilevskiy.

BRUINS 3, DEVILS 0

BOSTON (AP) - Tuukka Rask stopped 31 shots in his 46th career shutout, leading Boston to a win over New Jersey in its home opener.

Brad Marchand, Joakim Nordstrom and Patrice Bergeron scored in the Bruins' first game on home ice since losing 4-1 in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final against the St. Louis Blues in June. Boston won its first three road games this season before a 4-2 loss at Colorado on Thursday night.

Cory Schneider stopped 29 shots for the Devils, who are 0-3-2.

CANADIENS 6, BLUES 3

MONTREAL (AP) - Brendan Gallagher had a goal and two assists and Montreal beat the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Tomas Tatar, Jonathan Drouin, Philip Danault, Arturri Lehkonen, and Max Domi also scored for Montreal.

Brayden Schenn, Samuel Blais, and Vince Dunn scored for St. Louis.

Montreal goalie Carey Price made 26 saves. Jordan Binnington stopped 31 shots for the Blues.

The Canadiens, playing their third game in four nights, earned their first regulation victory of the season.

MAPLE LEAFS 5, RED WINGS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Ilya Mikheyev scored in the final minute of the second period when goalie Jimmy Howard's gamble backfired, and Toronto defeated Detroit to end a three-game losing streak.

With the game tied at 1, Toronto's Kasperi Kapanen flipped the puck up the ice, and Mikheyev appeared to have a step on Detroit defenseman Madison Bowey as the two chased it. Howard came well out of his net, hoping to beat Mikheyev to the puck, but the rookie forward got there first, stickhandled to his left and shot into the empty net with 29.5 seconds left in the period.

Nicholas Shore, Alexander Kerfoot, Jake Muzzin and Trevor Moore also scored for the Maple Leafs. Jacob de la Rose and Darren Helm scored for Detroit.

ISLANDERS 3, PANTHERS 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Brock Nelson scored in the shootout and New York beat Florida to snap a two-game skid.

Anders Lee and Josh Bailey scored in regulation for the Islanders. Semyon Varlamov, signed to a four-year, $20 million deal in the offseason, stopped 35 shots through overtime and all three Florida attempts in the tiebreaker to pick up his first win with New York.

Evgenii Dadonov had a goal and an assist, Denis Malgin also scored, and Sam Montembeault stopped 26 shots through overtime in his first start of the season for Florida. The Panthers lost in a shootout for the second straight game to fall to 1-2-2 through five games.

The Panthers outshot the Islanders 12-9 in the first 20 minutes but failed to capitalize on the power play, squandering three opportunities.

JETS 3, BLACKHAWKS 2, OT

CHICAGO (AP) - Mark Scheifele scored 47 seconds into overtime and Winnipeg rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat winless Chicago and extended its winning streak to three games.

Scheifele beat Robin Lehner from high in the slot with a shot that sailed past the goalie's outstretched glove after taking a pass from Blake Wheeler. Scheifele has a goal and five assists in his last three games.

Andrew Copp and Nikolaj Ehlers also scored for Winnipeg, which trailed 2-0 in the first period. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 27 shots.

Brandon Saad scored short-handed and Brent Seabrook had a power-play goal for Chicago. Lehner, a Vezina Trophy finalist with the New York Islanders last season and signed to a one-year contract during the summer, finished with 30 shots in his Blackhawks debut as they fell to 0-3-0.

PENGUINS 7, WILD 4

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Sidney Crosby had a goal and assist, Adam Johnson and Sam Lafferty each scored his first career goal, and short-handed Pittsburgh held on to beat winless Minnesota.

Patric Hornqvist, Kris Letang, Joseph Blandisi and Jake Guentzel also scored in Pittsburgh's first road game of the season. Matt Murray stopped 29 shots for the Penguins, who scored four times in the second period.

Minnesota goalie Devan Dubnyk gave up five goals on 23 shots and was pulled midway through the second period. Alex Stalock made seven saves in relief.

Jason Zucker, Jared Spurgeon, Brad Hunt and Luke Kunin scored for the Wild, who lost their home opener and fell to 0-4-0.

AVALANCHE 3, COYOTES 2

DENVER (AP) - Andre Burakovsky scored at 3:29 of overtime and Colorado edged Arizona.

Pavel Francouz had 34 saves in his first NHL start, and Nazem Kadri and Tyson Jost scored less than two minutes apart as the Avalanche started the season with four wins at home.

Antti Raanta was equally sharp in his first start of the season, stopping 29 shots. Michael Grabner and Nick Schmaltz scored for the Coyotes.

Burakovsky got the winner after a back-and-forth extra period. Burakovsky collected the puck close in and sent a high shot past Raanta for his second goal and second winner in as many games.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Top six picks for Week 6 in Westgate Super Contest:

6) Saints, +1.5 (810)

5) Cowboys, -7 (811)

4) Vikings, -3 (858)

3) Seahawks, -1 (932)

2) Jaguars, -1.5 (1,111)

1) LA Rams, -3 (1,225)

2019 record: 16-13-1

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a football Saturday??.

13) First of all, many thanks to Lamarr, Gregg, my friend Bobby and all the nice people at the MGM Grand sportsbook for an excellent day full of football and food.

MGM Grand sportsbook is a good place; comfortable chairs, big screens, and lot of good food options very nearby (deli, pizza, plus very good hamburgers).

12) South Carolina 20, Georgia 17 OT? This game scrambles the national title picture; Dawgs turned ball over four times (-4), missed a 42-yard FG on the last play of the game.

The loss hurts Notre Dame as much as Georgia, seeing how the Fighting Irish lost in Athens.

11) Oklahoma 34, Texas 27? Game was only 10-3 at halftime; Sooners outgained Texas 511-252, but they were -2 in turnovers. Hurts ran the ball (17 carries/131 yards) better than he threw it (16-28/235 yards), but he is now 32-2 as a college starter.

10) UNLV 34, Vanderbilt 10? Mountain West finishes with a 9-10 SU record against Power 5 conferences this year, despite being an underdog in 18 of the 19 games.

9) Northern Illinois 39, Ohio U 36? Bobcats led 21-10 at halftime, but NIU kicked a 37-yard FG with 0:33 left to post the upset win.

8) Louisville 62, Wake Forest 59? Demon Deacons scored 28 points in the 4th quarter, the most points an ACC team has ever scored in the 4th quarter of a loss.

7) Upsets of the Week:
? Bowling Green (+25) 20, Toledo 7
? South Carolina (+24) 20, Georgia 17 OT
? UNLV (+15) 34, Vanderbilt 10
? Northern Illinois (+7) 39, Ohio U 36
? Louisville (+6.5) 62, Wake Forest 59
? Tennessee (+6.5) 20, Mississippi State 10
? Georgia State (+6.5) 31, Coastal Carolina 21

6) Iowa State 38, West Virginia 14? Next time a big-$$ school hires a new coach (USC, UCLA?) they should hire Iowa State?s Matt Campbell; very good coach.

5) Baylor 33, Texas Tech 30 OT? Bears are 6-0; they tied this game on the last play of regulation. Now the schedule gets a lot harder; they still have to play Oklahoma State, TCU, Oklahoma and Texas. They?re already eligible for a bowl game.

4) Temple 30, Memphis 28? First loss for the 5-1 Tigers, who rallied back from down 23-7 to within 30-28 with 9:58, but that was as close as they got. Total yardage was 492-456 Memphis, but the Tigers turned the ball over four times (-2).

3) Minnesota 34, Nebraska 7? Golden Gophers are 6-0 for the first time since 2003, figure to be ranked in the top 25 next week for the first time in five years; they ran the ball for 322 yards on a 37-degree day and converted 8-13 third down plays.

2) Penn State 17, Iowa 12? Hawkeyes lost 10-3 at Michigan last week; they have serious issues on offense. PSU converted 10-19 on third down, QB Clifford ran ball 16 times for 52 yards, mostly on some of the important third down plays.

6-0 Nittany Lions host Michigan and College GameDay next week.

1) Wisconsin 38, Michigan State 7? If Notre Dame had Wisconsin?s resume, they?d be #1 in the country right now; Badgers have outscored opponents 255-29 with four shutouts, with decisive wins over Michigan and Michigan State- they visit Ohio State October 26.
