Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Interesting college football games on this week?s card:

? UCLA @ Stanford (-6.5)

? Indiana (-6) @ Maryland

? Boise State (-6.5) @ BYU

? TCU (-3.5) @ Kansas Sate

? Texas A&M (-6.5) @ Ole Miss

? Tulane @ Memphis (-4.5)

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??

13) Washington 7, St Louis 4? At one point in May, the Nationals were 19-31, 8.5 games out of first place, only 1.5 games ahead of the woeful Marlins. Manager Dave Martinez seemed certain to be fired, but now he is here, managing the first Wild Card team to make a World Series since Giants/Royals in 2014.

12) Sitting on the airplane coming home last night, and find out the Rams cleaned house a little Tuesday; starting CB Aqib Talib was put on the IR, the other starting CB Marcus Peters got traded to the Ravens for a reserve LB.

Later LA acquired a reserve lineman from the Browns, and they traded a couple of #1 picks to the Jaguars for disgruntled star CB Jalen Ramsey, who hopefully now will be gruntled.

11) Rams took QB Jared Goff in the first round of the 2016 draft; here are their 1st round picks since then:

2017: Traded to Tennessee to help get the pick they used to take Goff.
2018: Traded to New England for WR Brandin Cooks.
2019: Traded to Atlanta for multiple lower picks.
2020-21: Traded to Jacksonville for Jalen Ramsey.

10) Now that I?m back from my excellent vacation to Las Vegas, a story from my 2nd night there; I?m leaving the person?s name out, because it isn?t relevant or right, but this was kind of fun.

I?m sitting at the Vdara hotel bar, shooting the breeze with some guy from Sacramento who owns a lot of buildings and is apparently wealthy; his very attractive wife is sitting next to him, laughing at his quips as he tells me in detail how he met her a few years ago, they fell in love, they both dumped their spouses, and finally got married a few months ago. Alrighty then.

A couple of women sit at the bar near us, and Mr Sacramento starts bantering with them; the women are old high school friends from Florida who are having a reunion. Mr Sacramento asks them if they?re from Canada; I?m not sure why.

At one point, one of the two women asks us, ?Any of you baseball fans?? I say that I am, and she points to her friend? ?This is Player X?s mom?. Player X is a major league player who happened to have been on my fantasy team the last couple years.

I quickly impress Mrs X by blurting out some useless info about her son, then tell her I traded him in April, before his best hot streak of the season. She mocked me for trading her son, but we became buddies and talked baseball and other stuff for the next hour or so.

Unfortunately for me she is married and a nice lady, so it ended there, but it made me laugh at myself. Also, the two guys I got for her son are both OK players, the pitcher I got is a good prospect.

Originally called that a quick story, but had to delete the word quick. Moving right along??

9) Win for me; flew home during a Presidential debate, so I missed it. Also missed couple of playoff games, but followed along on Twitter on the airplane. Politicians? Not so much.

8) NFL underdogs are 55-35-1 ATS so far this season, 40-20-1 on the road.

7) From AdamJT: Dallas Cowboys are the only NFL team that hasn?t started a drive in its opponent?s territory so far this season. The other 31 teams have started an average of 5.9 drives in opponents? territory, and four teams have started 10+.

6) Tennessee Titans will start Ryan Tannehill at QB Sunday against the struggling Chargers, benching Marcus Mariota; if my favorite NFL team had Tannehill/Mariota at QB, I wouldn?t be a happy human.

Tannehill was a wide receiver until his junior year at Texas A&M; maybe he should play for the Bengals, since it was Mike Sherman who made Tannehill a QB, and Bengals? coach Zac Taylor is Sherman?s son-in-law.

5) First college basketball game on CBS College Sports November 5: Utah @ Nevada, which is a pretty good game for opening night, Steve Alford?s first game coaching the Wolf Pack.

4) Phil Mickelson is ranked #47 in the world this week; he hasn?t been ranked outside the top-50 in the World Golf Rankings since November 28, 1993.

3) Major League Baseball plans to open a 17,000-square-foot flagship retail store in Manhattan next summer, at 50th St and 6th Ave; what took them so long?

2) Cardinals? manager Mike Shildt mentioned the other day how data exists showing that the average fly ball was traveling 4.5 fewer feet during the playoffs, as opposed to the regular season.

1) Washington winning the NLCS leaves the Seattle Mariners as the only major league team that has never played in a World Series.

Tanev lifts Penguins over Avalanche 3-2
October 16, 2019
By The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) Brandon Tanev scored a short-handed goal in overtime, and the Pittsburgh Penguins handed the Colorado Avalanche their first loss of the season with a 3-2 victory Wednesday night.

Tanev, Pittsburgh's biggest free-agent pickup in the offseason, scored his first goal with his new team 3:57 into the extra session. He became the second player in franchise history with a short-handed overtime goal, joining Mario Lemieux on Jan. 22, 1996.

Tanev swooped into the zone and threw a shot on goal that went between Philipp Grubauer's pads. Colorado forward Gabriel Landeskog knocked the puck into the net, giving Pittsburgh its fourth straight win for the first time since an eight-game winning streak last season.

Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel also scored for Pittsburgh, and Matt Murray made 26 saves.

The Avalanche, the NHL's last unbeaten team, looked to start the season with six straight wins for the first time since 2013-14.

Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Calvert scored for Colorado, and Grubauer stopped 30 shots.

OILERS 6, FLYERS 3

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Connor McDavid had a goal and four assists for Edmonton, and Leon Draisaitl added two goals and one assist.

It was McDavid's third career five-point game. Mikko Koskinen made 49 saves for Edmonton (6-1-0) in his third win of the season.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Ethan Bear and former Flyer Brandon Manning each scored their first goal of 2019-20.

Jakub Voracek scored twice for Philadelphia (2-2-1) and assisted on Oskar Lindblom's goal.

It was a tough night for Flyers goalie Carter Hart, who allowed four goals on 14 shots. He was pulled in the second period after Nugent-Hopkins' power-play goal and replaced by Brian Elliott.

SHARKS 5, HURRICANES 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Evander Kane became the first San Jose player to score three goals in the opening period of a game, and the Sharks earned for their third straight victory.

Kane opened the scoring at even strength and added two power-play goals in the first for his second career hat trick. The Sharks are hitting their stride after beginning the season with four straight losses.

Tomas Hertl had a goal and two assists and Barclay Goodrow also scored for San Jose. Martin Jones made 36 saves.

Dougie Hamilton and Erik Haula scored for the Hurricanes, who had won seven of their first eight games this season for the best start in franchise history. James Reimer stopped 17 shots.

DUCKS 5, SABRES 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Adam Henrique scored twice and Jakob Silfverberg had a goal and two assists, leading the Ducks to the victory.

Rickard Rakell had a goal and an assist for Anaheim, and Ryan Getzlaf scored the Ducks' first power-play goal of the season. John Gibson made 31 saves.

Victor Olofsson scored his team-leading sixth power-play goal for the Sabres, who absorbed their first regulation loss after a 5-0-1 start. Jack Eichel also scored for Buffalo, and Linus Ullmark stopped 26 shots.

Buffalo entered with the league's best power play with nine goals in 21 opportunities, but was 1 for 7 with the man advantage.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Over/under win totals for the NBA this season:

57.5? Bucks

54.5? Rockets, 76ers, Jazz, Clippers

52.5? Nuggets

50.5? Lakers

49.5? Celtics

48.5? Warriors

Quote of the Day
?Seriously guys, that guy is our quarterback when he clears the protocol, and it?s as simple as that. Appreciate the efforts of Duck (Devlin) and so forth, but as soon as [Rudolph] is ready to go, he?s ready to go.?
Steelers? coach Mike Tomlin, talking about his QB?s

Thursday?s quiz
When was the last time the NY Knicks were in the NBA Finals?

Wednesday?s quiz
Nationals? manager Dave Martinez won a World Series ring as bench coach for the Chicago Cubs.

Tuesday?s quiz
Aaron Rodgers played his college football at California

***************************

Thursday?s Den: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) First off today, a little news??.at some point soon, probably early next week but maybe as early as tomorrow, I?m going to be going off the grid for a week or so.

Turns out I have a detached retina in my right eye, and I?m going to have surgery to get it fixed. The doctor basically told me I have to lay on the couch and DO NOTHING for a week after the operation until the eye heals, so I?ll be on the shelf for a little while, but hopefully I?ll be back for the start of college basketball season.

12) Wound up in four different doctors? offices Wednesday; not good- the last one was a pre-exam for the operation where they give you an EKG and test your urine (for what, I have no idea, but mine passed)

Two thoughts here??.
? Peeing in a little plastic cup is an underrated skill (seriously, tough to do it well)
? My EKG, to quote the doctor, was ?Perfect? so I have that going for me.

11) NFL stuff:
? Michell Trubisky is expected to be back at QB for the Bears this week.
? Titans are starting Ryan Tannehill at QB this week against the Chargers.
? Steelers are going back to Mason Rudolph at QB for this week?s game.

10) Titans? deposed starting QB Marcus Mariota is now 26-35-2 ATS as an NFL starter.

9) Win for me; flew home during a Presidential debate, so I missed it. Also missed couple of playoff games, but followed along on Twitter on the airplane. Politicians? Not so much.

8) 22-year NBA veteran Vince Carter holds the league record with 245 different teammates; four of his current Atlanta teammates weren?t even alive when Carter made his NBA debut in 1998.

7) In the second half of their last two games, Kansas City has run only 35 plays; their opponents have run 79 plays, and that is a problem. Chiefs will be missing five starters in Denver tonight.

6) Was reading an article about a bookmaker who said the biggest thing most books need is volume, because no matter what, books generally pocket around $6 for every $100 wagered.

5) St Louis Cardinals had a rough week in the NLCS, but their pitching coach Mike Maddox got two hole-in-ones in the same round last week in Washington. That doesn?t happen very much.

4) Under Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys are 35-17-1 ATS in the 2nd half of games when the Cowboys are behind at the half. Pete Carroll, Bill O?Brien are #2, #3 on that list.

3) Redskins? QB Alex Smith broke his leg LY but still hopes to play in the NFL again; since he broke the leg, Smith has had 17 surgeries on it. Seventeen.

2) FWIW, thru six weeks of play, Arizona Cardinals have allowed the most fantasy points to tight ends. Fantasy owners who have the Giants? Evan Engram should enjoy that.

1) Angels signed Joe Maddon to a 3-year contract as manager; Maddon spent his first 31 years in pro baseball working in the Angels? organization.

In the Crease - Week 3
October 15, 2019
By Joe Williams

STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Buffalo 5-0-1 past six games overall Anaheim Under 5-1 past six games

Carolina 5-1-0 past six games overall Arizona Under 4-0 past four games

Colorado 5-0-0 past five games overall Los Angeles Over 5-0 past five games

Edmonton 5-1-0 past six games overall Montreal Over 4-0-1 past five games

New Jersey 0-4-2 past six games overall Nashville Over 5-0 past five games

West Coast Fair

The Carolina Hurricanes opened the season with a 5-0-0 record in their first five games for the first time in franchise history. They won their fifth game by a 5-2 score against the New York Islanders this past Friday, but fell 3-2 at home in the second end of a back-to-back against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Now, they'll head out on the road for an early-season west-coast swing.

If you ever wondered why it seems the Hurricanes are always on a lengthy road trip to begin the season, it's due to the North Carolina State Fair. PNC Arena and Carter-Finley Stadium, where N.C. State football plays, are right next to the state fairgrounds. The parking for the state fair uses the lots for Carter-Finley and PNC Arena, so the Hurricanes are on the road in the middle of October every season. They head to Los Angeles on Tuesday, San Jose on Wednesday and Anaheim on Friday before traveling to Columbus on Oct. 24 after six days off. Their next home game isn't until Oct. 26, a matinee battle against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Thursday, Oct. 17

N.Y. Rangers at New Jersey:
The Devils are looking to avenge a 6-4 loss in Newark against the Panthers, 6-4. They'll face a familiar foe in the Rangers. The Blueshirts won three of the four regular-season meetings in this series last year, although New Jersey won 4-2 in the last meeting on April 1, no foolin'. The home team has won six of the past seven in this series between NYC Metro rivals. The Rangers have been so-so in their three games to date. However, the power play has been clicking, hitting at a 33.3 percent clip to rank fourth during the early going. The penalty kill ranks 13th at 83.3 percent.

Nashville at Arizona: The Predators skate into the desert to face the Coyotes, and Arizona actually won this season series 2-1 in 2018-19. The Preds avoided the season sweep with a 5-2 win in the Music City last Feb. 5, but Arizona won 3-0 in Nashville on Nov. 29 and 2-1 at home on Nov. 15 in the only meeting in the Valley of the Sun. The Coyotes have actually won five of the past six against the Predators in Glendale dating back to the 2014-15 when the Predators swept the three-game season series. Nashville has struggled early on, ranking 25th on the power play at 16.2 percent while going 18th on the penalty kill at 80.8 percent.

Teens Hughes, Kakko struggling early
October 16, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko were the clear favorites all along to be the top two picks in this year's NHL draft. So far, the 18-year-olds have struggled to generate a lot of offense in the opening weeks of the season.

Kakko, selected second by the New York Rangers after New Jersey took Hughes at No. 1, broke through with his first NHL goal on Saturday. Hughes nearly got his first on Monday.

Now, the two youngsters will get a close-up look at each other on Thursday night when the Rangers visit the Devils for the metropolitan-area teams' first matchup of the season.

Despite Hughes' struggles getting on the scoresheet, Devils coach John Hynes likes the way the teenager is learning and working on improving his game.

''He's really understanding how hard you need to compete in this game and how much puck battles matter, attention to detail when you don't have the puck, and he's making strides in those areas,'' Hynes said. ''He's just a step away from really creating some pretty good offense.''

Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky, now part of the Oilers' front office, cautioned about the high expectations immediately placed on young players who come into the league as top draft picks. He pointed to Edmonton star Connor McDavid, who was a No. 1 pick in 2015.

''It's harder than people think,'' Gretzky said. ''There's a little bit more pressure on these young guys than people think. Connor's been in the league a few years, he's lived up to it. ... Young Hughes is going to be a fine hockey player. I've watched him play quite a bit. He's 18 years old, he's in the right situation.

''It's just going to take him some time, he's going to get his feet wet, he's going to get some growing pains but all in all you can tell his skill level and his passion for the game.''

Gretzky also talked about the adjustments a player like Hughes has to make as he adapts to the professional game and the higher level of competition.

''Now you're playing against men, you're playing against the best players in the world,'' he said. ''Let's be honest, we had fun and we were pretty good but these kids today with the level of skill and size and speed, they're so much better than when we played. That's not a knock against us. That means the game is growing and getting better all the time.''

With the Devils leading the Panthers 4-2 on Monday, Hughes had a chance to add to the lead. He got a bouncing puck on the left side of the goal, and batted it off the post and over the stick of goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who was diving back, but the puck went along the goal line and hit the right post and stayed out.

Hughes, who had three goals and an assist in four preseason games, remained without a point in the regular season and New Jersey ended up squandering a three-goal lead in a 6-4 loss to Florida to fall to 0-4-2.

Two days earlier, Kakko got on the scoreboard with a nifty forehand-to-backhand move to give the Rangers an early lead in a 4-1 loss to Edmonton, New York's first loss after opening the season with two wins.

''It was a special way for him to score,'' said linemate Ryan Strome, who set up Kakko on the rush. ''A great goal, a great move. Hopefully the floodgates are open for him. He's got all the tools to do it, so it should be fun to watch.''

Rookies who have already stood out in the opening weeks of the season include:

- Victor Olofsson, RW, Buffalo. The 24-year-old has five goals and two assists in six games and set an NHL record with his first seven goals all coming on the power play. He had two goals and two assists in six games last season. His record-setting goal got the Sabres started in a 4-0 win against Dallas on Monday that improved Buffalo to 5-0-1.

- Cale Makar, D, Colorado. Selected No. 4 overall by the Avalanche in the 2017 draft, he has six assists in five games, with four coming on power-play goals. Makar, who will turn 21 on Oct. 30, has helped the Avalanche open the season with five wins for the franchise's best start since beginning with six wins in 2013-14.

- Sam Lafferty, C, Pittsburgh. With the Penguins missing forwards Evgeni Malkin, Nick Bjugstad, Alex Galchenyuk and Bryan Rust, Lafferty has stepped up with three goals and two assists - all coming in the last two games, road wins against Minnesota and Winnipeg - to help push Pittsburgh to 4-2-0.

- Ilya Mikheyev, RW, Toronto. The 25-year-old Russian, signed as a free agent in May, has two goals and three assists in seven games. Mikheyev had a sensational goal Saturday night against Detroit as he drew Jimmy Howard out far from the crease, went to his left and fired it into the wide-open goal.

- Ilya Samsonov, G, Washington. After coming over from the KHL, Samsonov spent last season with Hershey of the AHL. As Braden Holtby's backup, the 22-year-old won his first two starts, limiting the Islanders and Stars to one goal each with a .961 save-percentage. In relief duty against Colorado on Monday, he gave up two goals on 21 shots and took his first loss.

STREAKING

The Colorado Avalanche have opened the season with five straight wins. ... The Devils have started the season with six straight losses (0-4-2). ... Buffalo's Carter Hutton, Nashville's Pekka Rinne and Colorado's Philipp Grubauer have won four straight starts to open the season, Carolina's Petr Mrazek and Boston's Tuukka have won their first three.

SLUMPING

Minnesota goalie Devan Dubnyk is 0-5-0 with a 4.44 goals-against average in five starts. ... The Devils' Cory Schneider is 0-3-0 with a 4.08 GAA in four starts, and Los Angeles' Jonathan Quick is 0-3-0 with a 6.43 GAA in three starts.

LEADERS

Goals: James Neal (Edmonton), 8; Assists: John Carlson (Washington), Patrik Laine (Winnipeg) and Morgan Rielly (Toronto), 9; Points: Connor McDavid (Edmonton), Leon Draisaitl (Edmonton), Mark Scheifele (Winnipeg), and Laine, 12; Ice time: Brent Burns (San Jose), 26:32; Wins: Marc-Andre Fleury (Vegas), Carter Hutton (Buffalo), Philipp Grubauer (Colorado), Pekka Rinne (Nashville), and Frederik Andersen (Toronto), 4; Goals-Against Average: Alex Stalock (Minnesota), 0.71; Saves: Fleury, 202.

GAME OF THE WEEK

The Boston Bruins visit the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Atlantic Division rivals' first matchup of the season, and the first of two meetings in four days. The Bruins knocked out the Maple Leafs in Game 7s in the postseason in each of the last two years.

Price, Mete, Suzuki help Canadiens beat Wild 4-0
October 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

MONTREAL (AP) Carey Price made 17 saves for his first shutout of the season and Victor Mete and Nick Suzuki scored their first NHL goals in a first-period burst in the Montreal Canadiens' 4-0 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night.

Joel Armia and Brendan Gallagher also scored and Nick Cousins had an assist in his Montreal debut to help the Canadiens improve to 3-2-2. The 32-year-old Price has 45 career shutouts.

Alex Stalock stopped 28 shots for the reeling Wild. They dropped to 1-6-0.

Playing his 127th NHL game, the 21-year-old Mete opened the scoring with 5:23 left in the first. He found space in the slot, took a backhand pass from Cousins from behind the net and beat Stalock to the glove side. That ended the longest goal drought to start a career in Canadiens history, a mark previously held by Mike Komisarek at 122 games.

Armia connected on a 5-on-3 power play with 2:28 left, and Suzuki scored with 37 seconds remaining in the period. Gallagher finished the scoring in the third period.

ISLANDERS 3, JETS 1

Nikolaj Ehlers had a power-play goal for Winnipeg and Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves.

The Islanders didn't get their sixth shot until 7:41 of the second period - and it was a power-play goal by Barzal that tied it 16 seconds after Dmitry Kulikov went to the penalty box for tripping.

Barzal broke the tie with 17 seconds remaining in the second period.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Over/under win totals for the NBA this season:

33.5? Bulls

31.5? Thunder

27.5? Knicks, Grizzlies

26.5? Wizards

24.5? Cavaliers

23.5? Hornets

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here?.

13) Chiefs 30, Broncos 6:
? Costly win; star QB Mahomes left in 2nd quarter with an injured knee.
? Word is that Mahomes dislocated his knee; an MRI will show if there was any ligament damage.
? Chiefs broke game open with a defensive TD when they were leading 13-6.

? Denver?s offense stunk; Troy Aikman seemed annoyed with Joe Flacco?s effort.
? Broncos missed an easy FG, failed on a fake punt; not their best night.
? Denver is 13-26 in its last 39 games.

12) Houston 8, New York 3? Astros grab a 3-1 series lead, with Verlander/Cole in line to pitch the next two games.

11) Chiefs? backup QB is Matt Moore, who is 15-15 as an NFL starter in his 11 years in the NFL, mostly with the Dolphins. He?s started only five games since 2012.

My lasting memory of Moore was on HBO?s Hard Knocks, when he was talking to then-rookie QB Ryan Tannehill, who said he didn?t know who the other three teams in the AFC East were.

?How can you not know that?!?!? Moore was as incredulous as I was.

10) How would you like to be Gerrit Cole?s agent? Cole hasn?t lost a game since May 22; Astros won his last 16 starts and after the World Series Cole will be a free agent. He earned $13.5M this year, figures to more than double that going forward. 3% (agents? fee) of $27M is $810,000.

9) Next two years, by the way, Astros are on the hook with Zack Greinke at $35M a year, and Justin Verlander at $33M a year. 3% of $35M is $1.05M.

8) UCLA 34, Stanford 16? Cardinals fall to 3-4; they?re down to their #3 QB and are in danger of their first losing season since 2008.

7) QB Brock Osweiler retired from the NFL this week, with a career record of 15-15 and career earnings of $41,396,679. Being a backup QB is profitable work.

6) In September, state of Pennsylvania took in $194.5M in sports bets, wth $19.3M in revenue, with 81.2% of the bets via online/mobile wagers.

5) Duke?s basketball team is allergic to true road games, but they seem to like Madison Square Garden in NYC:
Nov 5-6: Duke vs. Kansas??.Michigan State vs. Kentucky
Nov 21-22: Duke vs Cal??..Georgetown vs Texas

4) Mets told Brooklyn Cyclones? manager Edgardo Alfonzo that his contract won?t be renewed, even though he won the New York-Penn League championship this season. Go figure.

3) Atlantic 14, Mountain West will have a challenge series next (2020-21) basketball season, which should help their non-conference schedules; MW recently had the same thing with the MVC. Hopefully some of the games will find their way to TV (CBS College Sports?)

2) Sill trying to process that John Beilein is coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers; would love to know how guys like him, Billy Donovan, Brad Stevens compare coaching NBA with college ball.

1) Personal update; my eye operation will be Wednesday, which means that this site will get its first extended downtime since 2001 for a week or so, starting next week.
