Mercury hand Storm first home loss of season
June 30, 2019
By The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) DeWanna Bonner and Brittney Griner each scored 20 points to help the Phoenix Mercury beat Seattle 69-67 on Sunday, handing the Storm their first home loss of the season.

The Mercury (5-5) took the lead for good at 57-56 on Griner's basket with 5:05 left in the game. That sparked a 10-0 run that ended at 65-56 on Bonner's 3-pointer two minutes later.

The Storm (8-6) closed the deficit to 65-63 before the final minute, and Jordin Canada was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left that gave her a chance to tie it at the foul line. But Canada missed the first attempt and the Mercury's Leilani Mitchell secured the rebound after Canada intentionally missed the third one.

Sami Whitcomb had 13 points, Mercedes Russell and Alysha Clark added 12 each and Canada scored 10 for the Storm, who won their first five games at home.

SPARKS 94, SKY 69

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Riquna Williams scored 19 points and Los Angeles routed Chicago.

Los Angeles went on a 17-4 run in the third quarter to lead 67-42 on Tierra Ruffin-Pratt's 3-pointer with 3:25 left in the period. Chicago closed the deficit to 80-65, but the Sparks closed the game with a 14-4 spurt to match their largest lead of the game.

Los Angeles took the lead for good at 24-21 on the last basket of the first quarter and pulled away with an 8-0 run to start the second.

Diamond DeShields led the Sky (6-6) with 23 points.

WINGS 89, LYNX 86

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Arike Ogunbowale scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half, bouncing back from one of the worst shooting games in WNBA history, to help Dallas rally over Minnesota.

Ogunbowale finished 7 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. The fifth overall pick in the 2019 draft was coming off a 2-of-23 shooting night on Friday night's 69-68 loss to New York - the worst percentage in league history for any player attempting at least 20 shots.

The win ended a 12-game losing streak that Dallas (4-7) had to Minnesota (6-6).

Sylvia Fowles led Minnesota with 23 points.

LIBERTY 74, DREAM 58

ATLANTA (AP) - Tina Charles had 17 of her 24 points in the first half and New York Liberty beat Atlanta.

The Liberty (5-7) pulled away with 10 straight points to start the second quarter and led 39-28 at halftime.

Renee Montgomery made a pair of 3-pointers to help Atlanta cut the deficit to 56-48 at the end of the third quarter, but the Dream (2-8) would get no closer in the fourth.

Brittany Boyd scored 15 points and No. 2 overall pick Asia Durr added 11 points for New York in her return to her hometown. Reshanda Gray had eight points and 15 rebounds.

Brittney Sykes was 4 of 5 from 3-point range and tied a season high with 18 points for the Dream.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Angels? pitcher Tyler Skaggs passed away Monday in Texas; he was 27 years old.

Monday?s Angels-Rangers game in Arlington was postponed.

RIP, young man.

12) 29 years ago today was the only time I was ever fired from a job; it was a job in the NY State court system, and I was there for 10 months- the person they wanted to have the job didn?t score well enough on her civil service test, so they needed a schmuck to fill the item until she became reachable on the list.

I was that schmuck.

So on July 2, 1990 I was told to take a hike by the Chief Clerk, which taught me a few lessons, the biggest one being: Money ain?t everything; happiness is way more valuable.

Don?t stress out about things you can?t control. Do your best, be a good person, and things will work out well enough in the end. Health and happiness are the most important things.

11) Friday/Saturday, the Cleveland Indians became the first major league team EVER to get shutout in consecutive games, while allowing 13+ runs in both games.

10) Think about how much the NFL has changed over the last 40 years.

In 1976, the Eagles hired Dick Vermeil as coach; he had open tryouts for the public- a 30-year old bartender made the team as a special teams player, a story that was chronicled in the fine movie Invincible, with Mark Wahlberg.

That summer, the Eagles did 2-a-day practices six days a week for six weeks, played six games in the preseason. Now, 2-a-days are forbidden, they play four preseason games (the better players play 2 or 3 games, if that) and there is very little hitting in camp, to avoid injuries.

9) LSU?s football team hired former USC/Rams? head coach John Robinson as a consultant; LSU coach Ed Orgeron became friends with Robinson when Orgeron was as assistant at USC. Robinson?s wife is from New Orleans; he last coached at UNLV in 2005, is 83 years old.

8) Tampa Bay Rays? rookie Brendan McKay won his MLB debut on the mound over the weekend, allowing one hit, no runs in six IP. Monday night, he was the Rays? DH.

7) Mets will pay All Stars Jeff McNeil, Pete Alonso a combined $1,122,714 this season

Mets are paying Bobby Bonilla $1,193,248 this season, and every year until 2035.

6) Golfer Zach Johnson dropped out of the top 100 in the world rankings for the 1st time in over 15 years (April 2004).

5) St John?s sports teams (mostly their basketball team) switched from Under Armour to Nike this week; their 300 athletes will be outfitted wearing the swoosh.

4) Two Cleveland State basketball players joined the transfer portal Monday: Tyree Appleby (17.2 ppg, 5.6 apg) and Jaalam Hill (11.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg). There are rumors that four other players are also considering leaving- they?re not happy with coach Dennis Felton.

3) Charlie Blackmon hit .412 in June, scoring 30 runs, knocking in 25 in 22 games.

2) Kevin Durant played three whole seasons for Golden State, but the Warriors are going to retire his #35, which is weird. Golden State went 140-24 the two years before Durant got there, splitting a pair of Finals appearances. Will Andre Iguodala get his number 9 retired? Have to think Curry, Thompson, Green will all get theirs retired.

1) I?m guessing the people who make the NBA schedule (and TV schedule) have their hands full doing next season?s schedule? once the free agent dust settles, they can come up with the games they want to feature on opening night and Christmas Day.

Toronto-Brooklyn on opening night? Lakers-Warriors in Golden State?s new arena?

-- Favorites went 9-5 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs went 8-5-1 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams went 10-4 SU
-- Road teams went 7-6-1 ATS
-- The 'over/under' went 7-7

-- Underdogs 42-28-3 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams are 44-29 SU
-- Road teams are 36-34-3 ATS
-- The 'under' is 43-30

Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (2-8 SU, 3-7 ATS) had just one game in the past week, but it ended like so many others -- with an ugly loss. They were dropped 74-58 by New York (5-7 SU, 5-6-1 ATS), and the Dream have now lost back-to-back games by 16 points, an each of their past three by an average of 14.7 PPG.

-- Chicago (6-6 SU, 6-5-1 ATS) has dropped three in a row after their impressive start. They're 0-2-1 ATS during the span, too. After the under went 5-1 in the first six games for the Sky, the over is 4-2 across the past six.

-- Connecticut (9-4 SU, 6-7 ATS) has slipped in each of the past three outings, including an ugly 43-point loss to rival Washington (9-3 SU, 8-4 ATS). The Sun have also failed to cover in each of the past four contests.

-- For the Mystics, they have fired off five consecutive wins and covers, thanks mostly in part to their offense. They have 81 or more points in each of the five outings, and they have hit triple digits twice. The Mystics now lead the WNBA with 86.8 PPG, a 45.7 field goal percentage and 87.5 free-throw percentage while ranking No. 2 in 3-point percentage (35.2 percent). Washington is also No. 2 in scoring defense (73.2 PPG) and 3-point defense (30.7 percent).

-- Dallas (4-7 SU, 7-4 ATS) has registered a solid 4-2 SU mark over the past six games after an 0-5 start, finding their sea legs after missing Liz Cambage early on. The Wings have also covered three in a row, and five of the past six. The 'under' has hit in nine of their 11 games overall, too.

-- Indiana (5-9 SU, 7-7 ATS) has dropped four in a row, including the past two games on the road by a total of 27 points. They've allowed 96.5 PPG over the past two games for two overs, and each of the past three.

-- Las Vegas (7-5 SU, 4-8 ATS) has managed victories in three of the past four outings, although they have failed to cover in three in a row, and five of the past six. The over is also 4-1 in the past five outings for the Aces.

-- Los Angeles (6-6 SU, 5-6-1 ATS) has picked themselves off the mat and rattled off wins in two straight after a four-game losing skid. It's a return of offense, averaging 90.0 PPG over the past two. The over has cashed in three in a row for the Sparks, too.

-- Minnesota (6-6 SU, 6-5-1 ATS) has managed to win just two of the past seven outings. However, they're still 4-1 ATS over the past five outings, and the over is 4-1 during the same span.

-- Phoenix (5-5 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) is finally starting to look like themselves after a slow start. The Mercury have won and covered a season-high three in a row, and they look to keep it going against New York on Friday.

-- Seattle (8-6 SU, 7-6-1 ATS) has alternated wins and losses over the past four, and they're just 2-3-1 ATS over the past six outings. While the defending WNBA champs can't find any consistency in the win/loss columns, they're consistent on totals. The under is 6-1 across the past seven outings, and 11-3 overall.

Chicago Sky at Las Vegas Aces (-9, 159.5)

The Sky and Aces get things started for a 3 p.m. ET tipoff in Vegas ? or 12 noon p.m. local time. And while that may be an early wake-up call for those enjoying the Sin City sights, expect plenty of energy from Chicago Tuesday afternoon ? at least in the opening 20 minutes.

The Sky skid into Las Vegas on a three-game losing streak, most recently get dumped 94-69 in Los Angeles Sunday night. Chicago?s offense has sputtered during this stretch, averaging only 73 points on 41 percent shooting through that trio of losses. However, the Sky have put up 41 points per first half during this slump, shooting 45 percent from the floor in the opening two quarters.

The Aces have also been strong performers in the first half in recent games. Las Vegas is 3-1 SU (1-3 ATS) in its last four outings, scoring 41 points on 47 percent shooting per opening half in that span. Las Vegas runs into the worst first-half defense in the WNBA, with Chicago allowing foes to put up an average of 42.6 points in first 20 minutes of action on the season.

This total has slimmed from its opener ? dropping from 163.5 to 159.5 ? and providing solid value for a first-half shootout in Sin City.

PREDICTION: Over first-half 79.5

Atlanta Dream at Minnesota Lynx (-6.5, 151)

The Minnesota Lynx are running with a skeleton crew heading into Tuesday?s matchup with the Atlanta Dream.

The Lynx lost veteran forward Karima Christmas-Kelly to a season-ending knee injury last week and will be without shooter Damiris Dantas again as she nurses a calf injury. Those recent missing pieces just pile on to Minnesota?s rosters woes, with star Seimone Augustus and forward Jessica Shepard out with knee ailments.

The Lynx had just eight healthy bodies for Sunday?s game at Dallas and that lack of depth showed in the second half. Minnesota had a 53-41 lead at halftime but then scored just 33 total points in the final 20 minutes. The Wings dropped 48 in the second half and took an 89-86 win as 2.5-point home pups.

With the Lynx starters logging extended minutes (and the team watching its pace) and the Dream ranked dead last in scoring ? and averaging only 69 points on 36 percent shooting during their current three-game slide ? another power outage could be in store Tuesday.

PREDICTION: Under 151

Sunday?s picks: 2-0
Season to date: 29-18

Preview: Dream (2-8) at Lynx (6-6)
Date: July 02, 2019 8:00 PM EDT

If the Atlanta Dream are to end their latest slide and finally win a game on the road this season, they must find a way to at least their shooting woes for a bit.

They get another chance while trying to avoid a fourth straight defeat Tuesday night against the host Minnesota Lynx.

Atlanta (2-8) took two of three from Minnesota in 2018, but beating anybody in 2019 has been a chore for Nicki Collen's squad. Now, it is without star Angel McCoughtry (knee), but the club is also looking for others to consistently step up.

The Dream dropped their third in a row, 74-58 to New York at home on Sunday. Atlanta, which has lost the last three games by an average margin of 14 points, shot 27.1 percent from the field and was 8 of 28 from 3-point range against the Liberty.

Brittney Sykes (11.2 ppg) hit half of those 3s and had 18 points off the bench to lead the Dream, who are shooting a league-worst 37 percent from the floor this season.

"These guys know, they're professionals," Collen told the Dream's official website. "You're not gonna win basketball games shooting 27 percent. You're just not."

The Dream are opening a stretch of three straight contests away from home Tuesday. One of two WNBA teams that are without a road win, Atlanta last started 0-4 away from home in 2008.

Minnesota (6-6), meanwhile, is playing its lone home contest during a six-game stretch that began June 25. The Lynx are also playing the first of two games with Atlanta over an 11-day stretch.

The Lynx's bid for a season-high third straight win ended with a frustrating 89-86 loss at Dallas on Sunday. The Lynx led by 12 points at the half and six heading into the final quarter, by were outscored 26-17 in the fourth and allowed two key Wings' 3-pointers in the final minute.

Odyssey Sims scored 23 points to lead five Minnesota players in double figures. The veteran Sims (15.8 points per game) has averaged 22.7 points over a three-game stretch, but is facing drunk driving charges stemming from an arrest in early June.

It's uncertain if Minnesota and ex-Dream forward Damiris Dantas will be available after she missed Sunday's game with a calf injury. Dantas, who spent the past two seasons coming off the bench for Atlanta, is averaging a career-high 10.3 points and shooting 42.6 percent from the beyond the arc for the Lynx in 2019.

Talbot helps Lynx rout Dream
July 2, 2019
By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Stephanie Talbot scored 24 points with five 3-pointers - both career highs - and the Minnesota Lynx used a big third quarter to beat the Atlanta Dream 85-68 on Tuesday night.

Sylvia Fowles scored 10 of Minnesota's 22 first-quarter points and made 6 of 8 shots by halftime to help build a 38-34 lead. The Lynx broke it open in the third quarter, opening on a 16-5 run for a 54-39 lead and extending it to 66-50 entering the fourth. Talbot's fifth 3-pointer made it 77-56.

Fowles finished with 16 points for Minnesota (7-6). Odyssey Sims scored 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter. Talbot, in her second start with the Lynx, was 7 of 13 from the field to top her previous career mark of 18 points against New York last season.

Elizabeth Williams scored 14 points for Atlanta (2-9), which has dropped nine of its past 10 games. Alex Bentley added 10 points in her first game back from the EuroBasket tournament.

Atlanta is 0-4 on the road this season.

ACES 90, SKY 82

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A'ja Wilson, Liz Cambage and Kayla McBride all scored 16 points to lead a balanced offense as Las Vegas beat Chicago in a matinee game.

Cambage also had nine rebounds and seven assists for the Aces (8-5). Dearica Hamby and Kelsey Plum added 14 points each.

Trailing 80-78 midway through the fourth quarter, the Aces closed the game on a 12-2 run. Wilson had six points in the game-ending run as the Sky missed their last 10 shots.

Allie Quigley scored 18 points and Courtney Vandersloot had 12 assists for Chicago (6-7), which has dropped four straight.

Las Vegas shot 77 percent in the first quarter and led 31-28. The Aces were up 55-54 at the half.

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) On July 2, 1963, Giants beat the Braves 1-0 in 16 innings at Candlestick Park. Willie Mays homered in the 16th inning. Time of game: 4:10. No pitching changes.

Both pitchers threw complete games that night; Juan Marichal and Warren Spahn. Spahn faced 56 batters, Marichal 59.

Took me a while, but I found the pitch counts for this game; Marichal threw 227 pitches, and the 42 year-old Spahn threw 201. One of the most interesting major league games of all time.

If that ever happened today, both managers/pitching coaches would be fired before sunrise.

12) I think when they put in the 3-batter minimum in for relief pitchers, it is going to shorten games by 10-15 minutes a game. Pitching changes during an inning add around five minutes apiece.

11) One of first things I learned about baseball is that a team must be strong defensively up the middle to win a championship; some of the analytics people who run front offices now disagree with this. Take the Mets.

Amed Roasrio plays shortstop, Michael Conforto plays center for the Mets most days now; Rosario is a lousy SS and his on-base %age is .293. Mets have Lagares/Gomez, who both play CF better than Conforto but Dom Smith is hitting .330, so he plays left and Conforto plays center.

Wonder what the Mets? pitchers would do if they made out the lineup card?

10) Speaking of the Mets, they?re skipping Steven Matz?s start this weekend and will go into the All-Star break after Zach Wheeler, Noah Syndergaard make starts the weekend.

9) According to ESPN?s Adrian Wojnarowski, there is currently ?no market? for DeMarcus Cousins, the free agent center who played for Golden State last year.

In 30 regular season games with the Warriors after recovering from an achilles injury, Cousins averaged 16.3 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1.5 bpg, and 1.3 spg in 25.7 mpg- he was hoping at least for a one-year, 8-figure contract, but that looks unlikely right now.

8) Former NFL QB Anthony Wright was shot multiple times in North Carolina Monday by his girlfriend?s ex-boyfriend; Wright played for four NFL teams over the course of an eight-year career, starting 19 games- he went 5-2 starting for the 2003 Ravens.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Bronx put 1B Luke Voit (ab strain) on IL.
? 1B Kendrys Morales was released, is now a free agent.
? Cardinals put 3B Matt Carpenter (back) on the IL.

6) College basketball transfer portal:
? G Jaylen Fisher transfers from TCU to Grand Canyon.

5) Pretty good basketball trifecta at Barclays Center Dec 17:
Providence ? Florida
Temple ? Miami
Iona-Princeton

4) There was a hailstorm in western Mexico Sunday that covered parts of the region with as much as three feet of ice; hailstorms aren?t unusual for this time of year, but no one there had ever seen anything as extreme as this before.

3) Texas A&M has been in the SEC for seven years and still hasn?t played a football game against Georgia.

2) Red Sox will use Nathan Eovaldi as their closer when he comes off the IL.

1) One of my favorite hotel/casinos in Las Vegas turned 50 years old Tuesday; the Westgate, formerly the International and then the Las Vegas Hilton, opened on July 2, 1969.

New York Liberty at Seattle Storm (-7, 153)

The New York Liberty no longer look like the team that struggled to crack the win column back in June, starting the WNBA season on a 0-4 slide. Over their last five games, the Liberty have been competitive for the most part, fighting for a 3-2 SU (1-4 ATS) record in that span.

Offense has been New York?s weapon of choice, averaging 81.4 points per game in that span and posting one of the fastest paces in the league at 98.7. However, it takes the Liberty at least 10 minutes to get warmed up, with the team scoring only 18.2 points in the first quarter during that five-game stretch.

New York has an early tipoff in Seattle Wednesday, where the Storm are very strong on their home court. Seattle is 5-1 SU (3-2-1 ATS) as a host this season and looks to rebound from its first defeat in front of the home fans, falling 69-67 to Phoenix on Sunday.

With so many star players out of the lineup, the Storm have clamped down on defense. They?re the top-ranked defense in the WNBA and have been very stingy in the first frame, allowing an average of only 18.5 first-quarter points inside Alaska Airlines Arena. They?ve taken on faster-paced teams, like Las Vegas and Los Angeles, and slowed the tempo to a grinding halt.

Offensively, as mentioned above, Seattle is missing many key scorers from last year?s championship team. That?s left the Storm to post only 73.6 points per game ? just 19 of those in the opening 10 minutes. WNBA bettors should expect a slow start to this afternoon outing and get things over with in the first quarter.

PREDICTION: Under first-quarter 38

Preview: Liberty (5-7) at Storm (8-6)
Date: July 03, 2019 3:00 PM EDT

Still looking for the victory that will kick-start their season, the Seattle Storm continue their homestand Wednesday night against the New York Liberty.

The reigning WNBA champion Storm (8-6) have split the first two games of their six-game homestand and are coming off a 69-67 defeat to the Mercury on Sunday that was also their first home loss in six games this year.

Jordin Canada had a chance to tie the game with 1.3 seconds left after being fouled on a 3-point attempt, but she missed the first, and the Storm failed to get the offensive rebound when she intentionally missed the third.

"We gave ourselves a chance to get back into the game and send it into overtime late," coach Dan Hughes told the Seattle Times. "There were a lot of things we did right, but we didn't start well."

The Storm continue to play without starters Sue Bird (knee) and 2018 WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart (Achilles), who are both out long-term, while guard Jewell Loyd is out at least one more week with an ankle injury suffered in their 60-56 loss to Las Vegas on June 25.

Sami Whitcomb scored a season-high 13 points to go with a career high-tying six rebounds and five assists in her second start in Loyd's place, but recently named WNBA Player of the Month Natasha Howard was held to nine points on 4-of-15 shooting.

"They are very adaptable," Hughes told ESPN about his team, which is playing its home games at two different venues while KeyArena undergoes renovations. "If you have practice time with them, they value it. And they just have big hearts."

The Liberty (5-7) are seeking their first three-game winning streak of the season as they continue their three-game road swing. New York opened the trek with its largest victory of the season Sunday, cruising past the Dream 74-58.

Tina Charles scored six of her 24 points in a game-breaking 10-0 run to start the second quarter as the Liberty opened a 29-16 lead. Charles finished with 17 points in the first half, Atlanta native and rookie Asia Durr chipped in 11, and New York held Atlanta to 10 fourth-quarter points and 18 points in the paint for the game.

That performance was a stark contrast to the Liberty's season-long woes on defense. They are still last in the WNBA in scoring defense at 82.8 points per game but improved to 3-0 when holding teams under 70 points after doing so in back-to-back contests.

Stewart averaged 25 points to pace the Storm in a three-game sweep of the Liberty in last year's series.

Charles, Liberty beat Storm 84-83
July 3, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

SEATTLE (AP) Tina Charles had 26 points, five rebounds and four assists, Kia Nurse added 24 points and the New York Liberty beat the Seattle Storm 84-83 on Wednesday.

Charles scored 11 straight New York points in the fourth quarter for an 84-83 lead with 57.3 seconds left. After a timeout at 25.7, Seattle passed it around the arc and Jordin Canada missed an open 3-pointer from the top of the key.
