New York Liberty at Phoenix Mercury (-7.5, 160.5)

Two of the WNBA?s hottest teams collide in Phoenix when the New York Liberty put their three-game winning streak on the line against the Mercury, who have also strung together three straight victories.

While these teams have taken different paths to success during their respective runs ? Phoenix clamping down on defense and New York exploding on offense ? they do share a common thread with low-scoring first quarters.

The Liberty?s three-game winning streak has produced an average of 34.6 combined first-quarter points (New York allowing just 16.3 first-quarter points against), compared to a season average of 37.7 total points scored in the first frame.

As for the Mercury, their last three games have seen an average of 39.6 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter, and Phoenix ranks as the third-best first-quarter defense in the WNBA (18 points against per game).

New York will be at the tail end of a challenging road trip as well, playing its third game in six days while Phoenix has been off since a one-point road win at Seattle on June 30. The Mercury (who will be without Essence Carson) run the most methodical pace in the WNBA (91.08) and will enforce that on a tired Liberty squad in the opening frame Friday.

PREDICTION: Under first-quarter 40

Washington Mystics at Las Vegas Aces (-1, 164.5)

It?s a bet so nice, we?re going to hit it twice. Back on June 20, the Mystics and Aces combined for 90 points in the opening 20 minutes and blew the 82.5-point first-half total out of the water, thanks in part to a 49-point opening quarter.

These two teams mix it up again in Sin City Friday. Washington is the WNBA?s best offensive team, and is scoring 47.5 points per first half on better than 48 percent shooting on the year. Since that last meeting with Vegas, the Mystics have boosted their first-half production and are putting up 49.8 points in the opening 20 minutes over the last four outings.

The Aces post 44.3 points per first half on the year with that average climbing to 47.3 first-half points when inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Las Vegas shoots 46.6 percent from the field in the first two quarters before watching their scoring output sink to 40.6 points per second half.

Those strong first-half offenses aren?t the only reason why we love this bet again. Las Vegas is allowing 39.8 points per opening half at home on the year while Washington caves for 40.3 points in the first 20 minutes of action in road games.

PREDICTION: Over first-half 83

Wednesday?s pick: 1-0
Season to date: 31-19

Preview: Fever (5-9) at Wings (4-7)
Date: July 05, 2019 8:00 PM EDT

After some early flashes of promise, the Indiana Fever's rebuild has settled into the pattern everyone expected of last year's six-win team. The opposite appears to be true of the Dallas Wings, who seek a fifth win in seven games Friday night when they host the slumping Fever.

Not much was expected of Dallas (4-7) following the trade of superstar Liz Cambage in the offseason as first-year coach Brian Agler learned what to do with his remaining players. The Wings stumbled out of the gate, losing their first five contests - including a pair of defeats to the Fever (5-9) - but have since regrouped and are coming off an 89-86 victory over Minnesota on Sunday.

Kayla Thornton hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 35 seconds to play, and Kaela Davis preserved the lead by drawing a charge with 14 seconds left. Rookie Arike Ogunbowale's rollercoaster season continued as she scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half, successfully bouncing back from a 2-for-23 shooting night in Dallas' loss to New York last Friday.

The fifth overall pick in the draft hit 3 of 4 from 3-point range and 7 of 12 overall, and is averaging 19.3 points over her last four games. Ogunbowale, named the WNBA Rookie of the Month for June, has also scored 17 points per game during Dallas' four-game home winning streak.

She likely will have to continue the scoring load for the Wings as Azura Stevens is sidelined indefinitely with a foot injury. Dallas is also waiting on starting forward Glory Johnson to return stateside after Montenegro was eliminated from the Eurobasket tournament.

"Azura has had an ongoing issue with her foot since before the start of the season," Wings President and GM Greg Bibb told the Dallas Morning News. "Tried various treatment methods and the foot hasn't responded so the decision was made to shut her down, try a couple of different treatment methods and give the foot some rest. She'll be out for the foreseeable future."

Indiana, which started the season with three wins in four games, is trying to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat and a winless three-game road swing. The Fever were on the short end of a 102-97 overtime loss at Las Vegas on Saturday as they had no answers for A'ja Wilson in regulation and Liz Cambage in overtime, with the latter scoring 12 points in the extra period.

Kelsey Mitchell scored 21 points and Candice Dupree added 20, but even a franchise-record 30 assists and 13 3-pointers were not enough for Indiana, which was outscored 26-6 at the foul line and outrebounded 50-32 on the back end of games on consecutive nights.

"We showed some character today," said Indiana's Erica Wheeler, who had a team-high eight assists. "We lost a hell of a game. It was a mental game for us. We flew in this morning, got some sleep and played a tough game tonight. We needed to grind. We need to take this effort and keep this intensity."

Ogunbowale only played in the first game between the teams, a 79-64 Fever win in Indianapolis, and shot 2 of 14. She missed the second game, a 76-72 Indiana victory in Dallas on June 13, due to a sprained ankle.

Preview: Liberty (6-7) at Mercury (5-5)
Date: July 05, 2019 10:00 PM EDT

Riding their longest winning streak of the season, the Phoenix Mercury might be getting even stronger.

WNBA superstar Diana Taurasi could possibly be set for her 2019 debut with the Mercury, who'll look for a fourth consecutive victory Friday night against a visiting New York Liberty club that's also won three in a row.

Following a rather rough start, Phoenix (5-5) has turned things around and is in position to move above .500 for the first time in 2019. Adding to the good times in the desert, ESPN reported this week that Taurasi (back) has been cleared to fully participate on the court and could be available as early as Friday.

Last weekend, Taurasi told azcentral.com: "New York is the day we're all thinking. It's one of those things where I'm right there. I'm literally in my training camp still. I'm six weeks behind these guys who have been working so hard.

"I just want to make sure when I'm on the court, I'm at their level."

Taurasi is the WNBA's all-time leading scorer with 8,549 points, but after struggling for nearly the first month of the season, the Mercury have upped their game without their star on the floor. DeWanna Bonner (20.2 points per game) and Brittney Griner (17.4 ppg) have done well carrying the scoring load, and each posted 20 points in Sunday's 69-67 victory at Seattle.

Phoenix shot just 39.7 percent but committed only six turnovers and used a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to hand the Storm their first home defeat.

The Mercury now will aim for a more complete effort against New York (6-7), which also is playing its best basketball of the season. The Liberty look to complete a perfect three-game road stretch after winning 84-83 at Seattle on Wednesday.

Tina Charles scored 26 points and Kia Nurse added 24 as the Liberty overcame a 10-point second-half deficit to outscore the Storm 24-13 in the final quarter. New York, which opened the fourth on a 10-0 run, shot 49.3 percent for the contest.

Charles, who is nearing 3,000 rebounds for her career, has totaled 50 points in the last two games. Nurse, meanwhile, got back on track Wednesday while surpassing the 500-career point mark after combining for 23 points in the previous two contests.

New York has lost four in a row versus Phoenix, which will be trying for a third consecutive home victory.

Preview: Dream (2-9) at Storm (8-7)
Date: July 05, 2019 10:00 PM EDT

Perhaps a visit from the lowly Atlanta Dream will help the Seattle Storm end their sudden troubles at home.

The Storm look to avoid a third straight loss at home and overall Friday night while trying to keep the Dream winless on the road with a season-high fifth consecutive defeat.

Despite some well-documented injuries to key stars Breanna Stewart (Achilles) and Sue Bird (knee), Seattle (8-7) opened 5-0 at home while playing games in nearby Everett and at the University of Washington as KeyArena undergoes renovation.

However, after opening a stretch of six straight home games with a 79-76 win over Chicago last Friday, the Storm have lost to Phoenix and New York by a combined three points. A 10-0 fourth-quarter run by the Mercury helped do in Seattle during Sunday's 69-67 loss, while it was outscored 24-13 in the final period in an 84-83 loss to the Liberty on Wednesday.

"Just (kind of need to) get some consistency in what we're trying to do," coach Dan Hughes told the Seattle broadcast during the game.

That rang true during that loss and should overall for the Storm, who are also without second-leading scorer Jewell Loyd (15.8 points per game) because of an ankle injury. Mercedes Russell had a team-high 19 points and Natasha Howard added 15 for the Storm, who shot 42.9 percent but committed 15 turnovers and missed five free throws versus New York.

The good news for Seattle is that it already has an 82-66 victory this season over Atlanta (2-9), which owns the worst record in the WNBA and is one of two teams yet to win on the road. Howard recorded 19 points with 14 rebounds, Alysha Clark scored 11 and Russell added 10 as the Storm delivered a relatively easy road victory over the Dream on May 31.

The Dream fell to 0-4 on the road after Tuesday's 85-68 loss at Minnesota - their ninth in the last 10 overall. It's their worst road start to a season since 2008.

Elizabeth Williams scored 14 points while Tiffany Hayes and Brittney Sykes were held to a combined 16 for Atlanta, which was outscored 28-16 in the third quarter. The Dream did get 10 points from Alex Bentley, who returned from playing in the EuroBasket tournament.

Atlanta, which remains without star Angel McCoughtry (knee), is not only last in the WNBA averaging 69.9 points, but is yielding the third-most at 80.9 per contest. Sykes had 12 points during the May loss to Seattle.

July 5, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Tiffany Mitchell scored 16 points, Erica Wheeler had 11 points, six rebounds and seven assists and the Indiana Fever beat the Dallas Wings 76-56 on Friday night.

Indiana (6-9) snapped a four-game losing streak to match its win total from last season.

Saturday?s 6-pack

? Mets? bullpen in Jacob deGrom?s starts: 51 ER allowed in 49.1 IP.

? Mets 2B Jeff MacNeil was a judge at the Nathan?s hot dog eating contest.

? The ABC affiliate in Albany is off my DirecTV; they have about 40 days to fix that, or I?m back to cable TV. Need ABC for college football Saturdays.

? All four Braves? starting infielders homered Thursday; the last time this Braves did that was September 19, 1961.

? If the baseball playoffs started today (they don?t):
AL: New York-Minnesota-Houston. Wild Card: Indians @ Rays

NL: Atlanta-Milwaukee-Los Angeles. Wild Card: Nationals @ Cubs

? An earthquake in California was felt in Las Vegas; the two late games in the NBA Summer League were postponed, and the Knicks-Pelicans game was cut short in 3rd quarter.

Quote of the Day

Saturday?s quiz

Thursday?s quiz
Before the NBA?s Rockets played in Houston, they called San Diego home.

***************************************

Saturday?s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here??.

13) Few years ago I was in Las Vegas during the All-Star break, was staying at Planet Hollywood. I?m playing video poker at the bar in the sportsbook during Home Run Derby, and for over an hour, all I heard was Chris Berman?s annoying ?back!!! back!!! back!!!? calling the home runs.

I mean, its freakin? Home Run Derby; stop getting excited every time one is hit.

Finally I offered the bartender $50 if he would mute the TV?s; he laughed. Turned out to be a good thing for me; I escaped the sportsbook and Berman?s voice, went out and played blackjack in the casino and won $100, so guess I should thank Berman for being annoying.

12) Miami Marlins have won two World Series, but have never been in first place on July 4th.

Teams with longest droughts since they were last in first place on the 4th of July: Toronto and Colorado, who were both in first place on July 4, 2000.

11) In 1997, a guy named Bubba Wells fouled out of an NBA game in three minutes. Really.

Wells went to Austin Peay, played 39 games for the Mavericks in 1997-98, scoring 3.3 ppg. On December 29, 1997 in Chicago, he scored a basket and fouled out in three minutes.

Should be noted that he also scored 21 in a game against the Spurs later that season.

10) Sam Mitchell, an analyst on NBA TV for the summer league games, told a story about how coach Bill Fitch would have the bench filmed during exhibition games, to see which guys were paying attention to the game and rooting for their teammates when they weren?t playing.

Every basketball team has a few guys who don?t play much; they can?t be a distraction, have to be good teammates.

9) I?ve said this many times; if you like the NBA, go to Las Vegas in July and watch the summer league? you?ll probably meet some players or coaches if you want to. It is affordable and it is fun, plus the gyms are air conditioned when it is 100 or so degrees outside.

8) Bryce Harper got his 200th career home run and his 1,000 career hit at the same time in the 6th inning Wednesday; a nitwit fan in Atlanta cost himself some swag by throwing the ball back on the field. For trivia buffs, Bryce Wilson was the pitcher.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Astros? P Corbin Martin had Tommy John surgery Wednesday.
? Tigers put P Victor Alcantara (wisdom teeth) on IL.
? Tigers put OF JaCoby Jones (back) on IL.
? Reds put P Amir Garrett (lat strain) on IL.

6) Monday afternoon, Detroit?s Matthew Boyd became the first pitcher EVER to strike out 13 batters, walk none, but not finish the 6th inning- he allowed nine hits, four runs in 5.1 IP.

5) Washington Nationals are wearing Montreal Expo throwback uniforms Saturday, which raises the question if Montreal will be getting an expansion team soon, or will the Rays move there? Sounds like a strong possibility that one of those things will happen.

4) Jimmer Fredette left the Warriors? summer league team and isn?t with the team in Las Vegas; he played in the Warriors? first two games in Sacramento this week, but apparently got some lucrative offers from foreign clubs and he doesn?t want to risk an injury.
3) All four Braves? starting infielders homered Thursday night; the last time this Braves did that was September 19, 1961.

2) This year?s baseball schedule is odd; 12 games on the 4th of July, then only 13 games the next night, a Friday night. Next year will be easier, with July 4th on a Saturday. Once they expand to 32 teams, scheduling becomes way easier.

1) Whats the worst day to have a birthday? February 29? Christmas? July 3rd? January 2nd? July 5? Most of the people I asked about this chose Christmas as the worst day? everyone else gets presents too.

December 26th might be an underrated day to have a birthday; people can go to the mall and get stuff on sale- do those people get more gifts than other people?

Minnesota Lynx at Connecticut Sun (-8, 155)

The Lynx and Sun ? surprisingly ? are headed in opposite directions coming into Saturday?s showdown in Uncasville. Minnesota is 3-1 SU (3-1 ATS) in its last four games while Connecticut has stumbled with three straight losses, failing to cover the WNBA pointspreads in each of those outings.

Now, to the Sun?s defense, those losses all came on the road and during a span in which the team played three games in seven days. Those defeats also came without guard Layshia Clarendon in the lineup (out with an ankle injury until the fall).

Connecticut?s offense fell off the face of the earth, averaging 69 points on 38.5 percent shooting during that three-game skid. Many of those troubles were happening on the perimeter, where the Sun shot a dismal 5 for 18 from beyond the arc (27.8%).

A few days off, some much-needed practice time, and a return to Mohegan Sun Arena should help jump start the team from those shooting woes. Connecticut averages 85 points and fires at a friendly 46 percent from the floor ? 42 percent from 3-point range ? at home this season.

And not to knock the Lynx's recent success (well... it's exactly what we're doing), but Minnesota has picked on the bottom half of the league in its last four games. It?s played Atlanta, Dallas, Indiana, and New York. None of those clubs are above .500 on the season and have a combined win/loss record of 17-32 (.285). The Lynx now meet a desperate Sun squad which is 6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS as a host this season.

Things could be closer than expected in the opening 20 minutes but with the Sun averaging 44.5 second-half points at home and the Lynx losing by an average of seven points per second half on the road, Connecticut will pull away and bring bettors along for the ride.

PREDICTION: Connecticut -8

Friday?s picks: 1-1 (Won first-half Over 83 in Mystics-Aces before game was suspended at halftime due to earthquake)
Season to date: 32-20

Sims, Lynx hand Sun 4th straight loss
July 6, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) Odyssey Sims scored 21 points, Sylvia Fowles had a double-double and the Minnesota Lynx handed the Connecticut Sun their fourth-straight loss 74-71 on Saturday.

Fowles had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota. Danielle Robinson had 13 points, including four free throws in the final minutes, and Napheesa Collier scored 10 in her first return to Connecticut where she had a stellar college career before being a first-round draft pick. The Sun had won a franchise-record 13 straight home games.

Minnesota (8-6) trailed 58-54 entering the fourth quarter. Lexie Brown quickly cut the deficit to one with a 3-pointer and her 3 at the 7:19 mark put Minnesota ahead for good 62-60. Sims made back-to-back jumpers for a 70-65 lead with 2:38 to go.

Robinson made two free throws at 54.2 seconds for a 72-69 lead and then two more after the Sun missed a pair of 3-pointers. Her free throws at 8.2 seconds iced the game.

Jasmine Thomas had 16 points to lead the Sun (9-5).

Sparks beat Mystics as Delle Donne gets hurt
July 7, 2019
By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) Nneka Ogwumike had a season-high 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Chelsea Gray had her first career triple-double, and the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Washington Mystics 98-81 on Sunday.

Ogwumike shot 11 of 15 from the field and hit a career-high five 3-pointers and Gray finished with 13 points, a career-best 10 rebounds and 13 assists. It was just the ninth triple-double in WNBA history.

Elena Delle Donne, Washington's leading scorer (17.2 points per game) this season, left the game in the first minute with a facial injury and did not return.

Riquna Williams added 19 points, including five 3s, and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt scored 12 for Los Angeles (7-6).

Aerial Powers led the Mystics (9-4) with a career-high 24 points and Kristi Tolliver had 18 points and nine rebounds. The Mystics had their five-game win streak snapped.

ACES 90, LIBERTY 58

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Kayla McBride scored 24 points and Liz Cambage added 21 to lead the Aces to a rout of New York, ending the Liberty's four-game winning streak.

Las Vegas (9-5) was playing two days after it's game against Washington was suspended at the half after an earthquake in California stopped the game. The Aces' court was playable, but the decision was made out of an abundance of caution to suspend it. The WNBA will decide when the game will be made up.

The Aces jumped out to a 12-2 lead and were up 12 at the half as Cambage was a force. She finished the first half with 13 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Tina Charles scored 13 points to lead New York while second-leading scorer Kia Nurse had a rough game going 1-for-13 from the field. She missed her first 11 shots before hitting a layup early in the fourth quarter.

SKY 78, WINGS 66

CHICAGO (AP) - Jantel Lavender had a season-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, Kahleah Copper scored a season-high 16 points, and the Sky pulled away late to beat the Wings.

Diamond DeShields added 10 points and Courtney Vandersloot finished with seven points and 11 assists for Chicago. The Sky (7-7) snapped a five-game losing streak.

Theresa Plaisance hit a 3-pointer to give the Wings (4-9) a 66-63 lead with 3:59 to play but DeShields answered with a 3 and Copper made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 67-66 with three minutes left. Lavender scored six points and Stefanie Dolson added five from there to cap the scoring.

The Wings went 0 for 6 from the field with two turnovers over the final three-plus minutes.

Arike Ogunbowale led Dallas with 22 points but shot just 7 of 21 from the field, including 0 for 5 in the fourth quarter when the Wings were outscored 26-12.

MERCURY 65, DREAM 63

PHOENIX (AP) - Brittney Griner scored a season-high 31 points, including two free throws with 3.1 seconds left, to help the Mercury beat the Dream.

Griner was 11-of-15 shooting and finished with 12 rebounds and three blocks. Leilani Mitchell added 13 points and DeWanna Bonner had 11 points and a season-high 14 rebounds for Phoenix (6-6).

Atlanta's Brittney Sykes hit two free throws, Tiffany Hayes and Renee Montgomery made back-to-back 3-pointers and Elizabeth Williams made a layup to cap a 10-0 run that made it 63-all with 16.7 seconds remaining. After Griner's foul shots, Bonner stole a pass from Sykes to seal it.

Sykes led the Dream (3-10) with 29 points and 10 rebounds, both season highs. They have lost five of their last six.

Phoenix has won four of its last five.
