Sunday?s 6-pack
Spending on MLB Draft bonuses this year:
30) Red Sox $6,369,200
29) Astros $6,462,099
28) A?s $6,696,900
27) Brewers $6,908,200
26) Cubs $6,987,900
25) Nationals $7,683,580

Quote of the Day
?Our goal is to get three stops in a row seven times in a game. If you get this, 90% of the time you will win the game?
Pistons? coach Dwayne Casey

Sunday?s quiz
Besides the Miami Marlins, what other team has Don Mattingly managed?

Saturday?s quiz
Roy Hobbs played for the New York Knights in the classic baseball movie, The Natural.

Friday?s quiz
Before moving to Texas in 1972, the Rangers were the Washington Senators.

***************************************************************************

Sunday?s List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer day??.

13) Angels threw a combined no-hitter Friday night, in their first home game since Tyler Skaggs? tragic death. Taylor Cole and Felix Pena combined on the no-hitter; Cole was the opener- he threw the first two innings. Pena threw 81 pitches in closing out the 13-0 win.

Skaggs? mother threw out the first pitch on a very sad, emotional night in Anaheim.

12) In his first two seasons in the NBA, Ben Simmons played 34 mpg in 160 games; he is one of the best passers I?ve ever seen, but this stat is staggering.

In those 160 games, Simmons is 0-17 behind the arc, and shoots only 58.3% on the foul line. For a guard with his overall skills to be such a suspect shooter is really unusual.

He could become one of the all-time greats if he would make jumpers and foul shots.

11) Orioles-Rays played a doubleheader Saturday; Baltimore started Aaron Brooks in the first game? they just got him from the A?s, where he started six games this season. Baltimore is a bad baseball team; they need all the help they can get.

Brooks retires the first eight batters he faced, throwing 32 pitches, but then they take him out, the night after they lost 16-4? WHY?!?!?!?! Brooks is 29, he?s not a big prospect, so they?re not trying to preserve his arm or anything. It makes zero sense.

Of course the next pitcher gives up a home run to the first batter he faces.

10) Orioles traded their best pitcher Andrew Cashner to Boston, for minor league IF Noelberth Romero and minor league OF Elio Prado. Both minor leaguers are 17 years old.

9) Washington QB Case Keenum is on his 4th team in four years this season; he started 39 games (21-18) the last three years, but he changes addresses every year. Will the Redskins play Keenum ahead of Colt McCoy, until rookie Dwayne Haskins is ready to play?

Keenum was the Rams? QB ahead of Jared Goff in 2016, so he knows that drill; he started the first nine games (4-5) but the first round draft pick will eventually start, just the way it is.

8) Lebron James will still wear #23 for the Lakers this coming season, due to production issues and the massive financial hit Nike would have absorbed from the No. 23 James inventory that?s already been produced.

Anthony Davis will wear #3 for the Lakers this season.

7) College basketball transfer portal
? Shakur Juiston bolts from UNLV to Oregon.

6) Former UNLV start Anthony Bennett was the first player taken in the 2013 NBA Draft, but his career fizzled out fairly quickly; he?s played for three NBA teams and five G-League teams in the last six years. Now Bennett has agreed to a non-guaranteed deal with the Houston Rockets- we wish him well.

5) Grayson Allen got tossed out of a summer league game Thursday, after he got a flagrant foul, with Memphis down 24 in 4th quarter. Funny how the TV announcers didn?t cover for him this time, like they did when he was in college.

4) Likewise, it was suggested one TV during the week that Zion Williamson might want to get in better shape before the Pelicans begin their training camp. How does a kid with so much money on the line come to summer league in less than tip-top shape?

3) First-round matchups for December?s Diamond Head Classic:
Houston/Portland
Georgia Tech/Boise State
Washington/UTEP
Ball State/Hawaii

Next time you hear someone whining that college athletes should get paid, ask them how many free trips to Hawai?i they?ve gotten in their lives, complete with free, first class hotels.

2) Angels/Rays both scored seven runs in first inning Friday, first time two teams did that on the same night since April 20, 2013, when the Angels/Indians did it.

Then Saturday, Cubs and A?s did it, too.

1) ESPN shows the World Series of Poker on a 30-minute delay; was watching it late into the night Friday night/Saturday morning, with the field down to 12 players (nine make the final table). Not always the best TV, because the hands aren?t edited; there is a lot of waiting as players decide whether or not to call bets. Lot of money rides on the outcome.

There was a controversy late at night (I mean, 4am in the east) where one player asked how much it was to call a bet and the dealer said the wrong amount, by like $5M. When it was pointed out there was a long delay, but according to the rules, it is the player?s responsibility to know the correct amount, no matter what the dealer says.

WNBA Betting Recap - 7/9-7/15
July 16, 2019
By Joe Williams

League Betting Notes (Tuesday, July 9 through Monday, July 15)

-- Favorites went 9-7 straight up (SU)
-- Favorites/underdogs went 8-8 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home/road teams went 8-8 SU
-- Home teams went 9-7 ATS
-- The 'under' went 9-7

Season Totals To Date

-- Favorites are 56-44 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs 58-39-3 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams are 57-43 SU
-- Road teams are 51-46-3 ATS
-- The 'under' is 59-41

Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (5-11 SU, 7-9 ATS) has come alive with three victories over the past four outings, and covers in four in a row before an overtime setback at home against Los Angeles (9-7 SU, 8-7-1 ATS) on Sunday. The under has connected in four of the past five for the Dream, too.

-- As far as the Sparks are concerned, they have won five of the past six, and they're 5-1 ATS during the impressive span, too. After an 0-3 ATS run on the road, Los Angeles have covered each of their past two away from home.

-- Chicago (9-8 SU, 10-6-1 ATS) has won and covered back-to-back games, and they're an impressive 4-1 ATS over the past five outings. They're also a solid 3-3 SU over the past six on the road, while going a strong 4-1-1 ATS during the solid stretch. The over has also cashed in five straight outings on the road for the Sky.

-- After showing signs of life, Dallas (5-11 SU, 8-8 ATS) is back to struggling again. They're just 1-4 SU/ATS across the past five outings, and a lack of offense plus struggles on defense has been the recipe for losing.

-- Indiana (6-12 SU, 9-9 ATS) have dropped three in a row since their impressive 20-point win in Dallas on July 5. They have also failed to cover in back-to-back games after a 3-0 ATS run. It won't get any easier with a rough schedule coming up over the next five.

-- Las Vegas (11-5 SU, 6-10 ATS) have rattled off five consecutive victories in a row, including a key revenge game and showdown in Washington (9-6 SU, 8-7 ATS) over the weekend, avenging an embarrassing 23-point loss to the Mystics on June 20. The Aces are still struggling against the number, however, going just 3-7 ATS across the past 10.

-- Speaking of the Mystics, they have fallen on hard times after a 9-3 SU/8-4 ATS start. They have dropped three in a row and failed to cover in each, allowing 91.3 points per game (PPG) during the span. As such, the 'over' has connected in all three outings.

-- Minnesota (10-7 SU, 10-6-1 ATS) have scratched and clawed their way to second play in the Western standings, just 1 1/2 games back of Vegas. The Lynx have caught fire lately, winning and covering four of the past five. Total bettors are happy with them, too, as the 'under' has hit in four consecutive outings.

-- Consistency continues to elude New York (7-10 SU, 7-9-1 ATS), as they have dropped and failed to cover three in a row after a four-game winning streak from June 28-July 5, including three straight wins on the road. The Liberty are playing shoddy defense again, and that's the key to their losing ways lately.

-- Phoenix (7-8 SU, 6-8-1 ATS) won an impressive game in D.C., topping the Mystics by 23 points on July 10. However, they failed to capture the momentum, losing games in Connecticut and Minnesota both by at least 13 points. After a 3-0 ATS run from June 23-30, the Mercury are a dismal 1-4 ATS across the past five.

-- As far as the defending WNBA champs are concerned, Seattle (10-8 SU, 9-8-1 ATS) heads into the new week with a game in Minnesota on Wednesday. The Storm have won and covered two in a row, but they have yet to win and cover in three straight so far this season. The under is 3-3 over the past six outings, but 12-5-1 in 18 games overall.

Preview: Dream (5-11) at Sky (9-8)
Date: July 17, 2019 12:00 PM EDT

They may not be All-Star starters, but Chicago Sky guards Courtney Vandersloot and Diamond DeShields are WNBA All-Stars all the same.

James Wade's dynamic backcourt looks to power the Sky to a third straight victory Wednesday when they host the Atlanta Dream in a matinee in Chicago.

Vandersloot leads the WNBA in assists by a comfortable margin at 8.2 per game and is on her way to leading the league in that category for a third straight season. She is threatening her league-record mark of 8.6 per contest set last year, and with both DeShields and fellow All-Star Allie Quigley - the league's leader in 3-pointers made and Vandersloot's wife - marking the first time Chicago (9-8) has had three All-Stars since 2013, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate Monday's announcement.

"It seems like it's always been one or another, which has been fine with us," Vandersloot told the Chicago Sun-Times. "But it's really cool that we both get to experience it together. It'll be really cool to look back on this one day when we were both All-Stars."

Quigley is also the two-time 3-point shootout champion, but it has not been announced if she will defend her title at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas later this month. DeShields, a first-time All-Star selection, is averaging 14.9 points in her second season.

Chicago got back over the .500 mark with an 89-79 victory at Dallas on Sunday. DeShields delivered from 3-point range, hitting 5 of 7 from deep and finishing with a season-high 26 points. Quigley added 12 points and Vandersloot chipped in eight and eight assists as the Sky finished 11 of 20 from 3-point range.

Atlanta (5-11) did not have any players selected to the All-Star team and continues to play without last year's leading scorer Angel McCoughtry as she recovers from a torn ACL suffered last year. The Dream were denied a third straight victory Sunday, losing 76-71 in overtime to the Sparks.

Tiffany Hayes forced overtime with a basket just before the buzzer, but the Dream could not recover from back-to-back 3-pointers by Los Angeles in the extra period. Hayes finished with 24 points and Monique Billings added nine and a career-high 16 rebounds for Atlanta, which continued to struggle offensively and shot 32.9 percent.

"I thought we did what we needed to do defensively, but it's hard to win games going 2 for 19 from the arc," coach Nicki Collen told the Dream's official website. "I would guess that of those 17 misses, 12 of them might have been unguarded. We just have to make a higher percentage of those to consistently win. We're gonna win some games with those kind of numbers, but we're not gonna consistently win going 2 for 19 from the arc."

McCoughtry's absence has made scoring difficult for the Dream all season - they are last in the WNBA in scoring (69.9), overall shooting percentage (36.9) and 3-point shooting percentage (28.4). Hayes leads the team with 13.3 points per game but is shooting just 39.7 percent.

Atlanta, which is 1-5 on the road this season, won two of the three games between the teams last year, including an 89-74 romp at home in the most recent matchup.

Preview: Wings (5-11) at Mercury (7-8)
Date: July 17, 2019 3:30 PM EDT

As the Phoenix Mercury look to get back on track following two straight defeats, it's uncertain if Diana Taurasi will be available to make her home debut Wednesday.

The ailing Taurasi could miss a second consecutive game when Phoenix takes on a Dallas Wings club that's still looking for its first road triumph of 2019.

Taurasi, the WNBA's all-time leading scorer, made her season debut following a back injury in Friday's 79-64 loss at Connecticut. She failed to make a field goal and reportedly tweaked her back before sitting out Sunday's 75-62 defeat in Minnesota.

"She needs to be comfortable," coach Sandy Brondello told the WNBA's official website earlier this month. "Her back needs to be feeling good, but the rest of her body, too."

All-Stars DeWanna Bonner (19.4 points per game) and Brittney Griner (18.8) continue to pace the Mercury (7-8), who are trying to avoid losing three straight for the second time in 2019. Bonner scored 27 of her 47 points over the last two games Sunday.

Griner had just 12 points, and the two were the only players in double figures for Phoenix, which shot 38.7 percent.

The Mercury hope for a much better outing than their first meeting with the Wings this season on June 20. Griner and Bonner were held to a combined 20 points as Phoenix shot 24.6 percent and was outrebounded 49-28.

Dallas (5-11) also is looking to avoid a third straight loss and finally add a victory to its 0-7 road mark. It's the franchise's worst road start since 2012, when the team was based in Tulsa. The Wings led by five at halftime on Sunday versus Chicago, but were outscored 31-13 in the third quarter of an 89-79 defeat at home.

Arike Ogunbowale scored 20 points for the Wings, who shot 38 percent and went 4 of 18 from 3-point range. The rookie guard is averaging a team-leading 15.1 points but is shooting 35.7 percent. She has averaged 19.8 points in the last four games, but scored just nine versus Phoenix last month.

Kayla Thornton had 18 points with 11 rebounds against the Mercury in June.

These teams will meet again Saturday night in Arlington, Texas.

As the Seattle Storm aim for a season-high third straight victory, the team is looking into physical abuse allegations against leading scorer Natasha Howard.

With that cloud hanging over the club, the Storm visit the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday night.

Howard, averaging team highs of 17.4 points and 8.2 rebounds, scored 14 in a 78-69 home victory over New York on Sunday. It was one day after her wife posted a video on Twitter dating back to March in which she was yelling at Howard about being threatened by the Storm's All-Star forward.

"We are in continued communication with the league, and their investigation is now in progress," the Storm said via a statement over the weekend.

While charges have not been filed, it would appear Howard will be ready to play Wednesday. It's apparently another moment of adversity for reigning WNBA champion Seattle (10-8), which has already dealt with coach Dan Hughes' cancer diagnosis and injuries to stars Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd (15.8 ppg).

However, the Storm still have a winning record and will attempt to focus on a chance for a second win in three games with Minnesota (10-7) this season. Howard has totaled 30 points in two contests against the Lynx.

Minnesota leading scorer Odyssey Sims, who is also dealing with her own off-court issues while reportedly facing drunk driving charges from an incident earlier this season, had 15 points and Sylvia Fowles added 14 with 13 rebounds in Sunday's 75-62 home win over Phoenix. For Fowles, it was her league-record 158th double-double.

"The things that (Fowles) does, it's because she's so consistent with it that people don't acknowledge it as much as they should, but the passes that she catches, the things she can do, defensively, she can guard guards, I mean she can guard guards on the perimeter," rookie teammate Napheesa Collier, who had 14 points with 11 rebounds versus Phoenix, told the Lynx's official website.

Fowles has 23 points and 18 rebounds in the two games with Seattle this season. Sims, meanwhile, totaled 20 points in those two contests.

"It's (Sims) and Syl that sort of make our offense go," Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said.

Crystal Langhorne scored a team-high 19 points off the bench for Seattle against the Liberty.

Howard leads Storm to 90-79 win over Lynx
July 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Natasha Howard scored a career-high 33 points, Sami Whitcomb made five of Seattle's 12 3-pointers and the Storm closed the game on a 10-0 run to beat the Minnesota Lynx 90-79 on Wednesday night.

Seattle led 78-66 with 6:25 left until Minnesota made 3-pointers on its next three possessions to pull within three. The Lynx got as close as 80-79 , but Seattle answered with 10 straight points, highlighted by Whitcomb's drive and no-look pass to Alysha Clark.

Whitcomb had 15 points and eight assists and Clark added 12 points and seven rebounds. Seattle (11-8) has won a season-high three straight games without stars Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd.

Seattle opened the game on a 15-4 run as Minnesota made just two of its first eight shots. The Storm led 26-16 after the first quarter and 40-30 at halftime behind 25 combined points from Howard and Whitcomb.

Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and seven rebounds for Minnesota (10-8). Danielle Robinson added 14 points, 10 assists and four steals.

MERCURY 69, WINGS 64

PHOENIX (AP) - Brittney Griner scored 23 points, including the go-ahead basket with 33.9 seconds left, and the Mercury held off the Wings.

Griner made a hook shot in the lane to give Phoenix a 65-64 lead. After Kaela Davis was off on a 3-pointer, DeWanna Bonner sank two free throws for a three-point lead. Dallas elected to go for a quick 2-point shot, Griner grabbed the miss and she made two free throws to seal it.

Essence Carson and Camille Little each added 11 points for Phoenix (8-8).

Arike Ogunbowale scored 14 points on 6-of-22 shooting for Dallas (5-12), which is winless on the road this season in eight attempts.

SKY 77, DREAM 76

CHICAGO (AP) - Diamond DeShields scored 20 of her season-high 22 points in the first half, Stefanie Dolson made a go-ahead layup with 2.3 seconds left and the Sky beat the Dream.

DeShields made 1 of 2 free throws with 31.3 seconds left to pull Chicago to 76-75, and the Sky forced Atlanta into a long 3-pointer by Alex Bentley at the other end. After a timeout at 6.9, Courtney Vandersloot drew two defenders on a drive into the lane and found an open Dolson under the basket. Atlanta had an open shot in the corner at the buzzer but Brittney Sykes' shot was off the mark.

DeShields was 10 of 13 from the free-throw line and also grabbed eight rebounds for Chicago (10-8), which has won three straight games.

Renee Montgomery led Atlanta (5-12) with 23 points and six assists.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some Week 1 NFL spreads:

? Packers @ Bears (-3,5. 46)

? Falcons @ Vikings (-4, 47.5)

? Redskins @ Eagles (-9, 46.5)

? Bills @ Jets (-3,5. 38.5)

? Ravens (-4.5, 37.5) @ Dolphins

? 49ers @ Buccaneers (even, 49)

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??..

13) Spent Wednesday afternoon in Rivers Casino?s new sportsbook in Schenectady and had an excellent time; it was (kind of) like being in Las Vegas.

Not sure what they?re going to do when football starts, because it?ll be very crowded, but they?ve got betting kiosks which should help you make wagers quicker than if you wait on line.

12) Dodgers 7, Phillies 2? Long rain delay in the third inning of this game; teams play again at 1:00 this afternoon, not much turnaround time, less than 12 hours.

11) San Diego Padres have been no-hit ten times, but have never thrown one. There have been 134 no-hitters since 1969, when the Padres joined the big leagues.

Former Miami farmhand Chris Paddack took a no-hitter into the 8th inning for the Padres Wednesday night; he had to settle for a 3-2 win.

10) A?s 10, Mariners 2? Oakland hit six homers as they won Homer Bailey?s debut in green and gold. Ramon Laureano homered and made another great catch in centerfield.

9) Giants 11, Rockies 8? Colorado?s season is spinning out of control; anytime their hitters don?t put up a 10-spot (and sometimes even when they do), their pitching can?t hold up. Rockies are 2-11 in their last 13 games, outscored 108-57.

8) AAA Albuquerque Isotopes (Colorado?s farm team) had 50 cent hot dog nite last night and drew 10,225 fans who bought a total of 35,174 hot dogs. Cheap food is a popular promotion.

7) Baseball stuff:
? White Sox put OF Eloy Jimenez (elbow) on the IL.
? White Sox activated C Welington Castillo from the IL.
? Phillies put OF Jay Bruce (oblique) on the IL.
? Royals put SS Adelberto Mondesi (shoulder) on the IL.

6) Arizona 19, Texas 4? Eduardo Escobar homered from both sides of the plate.

5) Atlanta Falcons are paying their defense this week; first DT Grady Jarrett got a 4-year, $68M deal, then LB Deion Jones got a 4-year, $57M extension.

4) If you do offseason NBA research, keep in mind that over the last two seasons, the Denver Nuggets are 23-8 in games decided by three-points or less.

3) With Tony Parker retiring, JJ Redick is the only active player in the NBA who has been in the league for 13+ years and has been in the playoffs every year.

2) Mets 14, Twins 4? Minnesota led 3-2 after six innings; not a good day for their bullpen.

1) Saturday is the 50th anniversary of the first time a guy walked on the moon; imagine what that must have been like? Doing something just about no one else has ever done. Amazing.

DALLAS WINGS AT LOS ANGELES SPARKS (-7.5, 151)

The Sparks are coming off an overtime road win in Atlanta and have won five of their last six games. They've won their last three games at home by an average score of 92.7-74.7.

That said, they will have to play today without Candace Parker, Alana Beard and Maria Vadeeva, all sidelined with injuries. While guard Riquna Williams, who had averaged 16.8 points per game over her last six games, will begin serving a 10-game suspension after a WNBA investigation into a domestic violence incident. They will be very short-handed for this game and will have to rely on the Ogwumike sisters and Chelsea Gray to carry the load.

This just in: the Dallas Wings are bad. And not in a "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" sort of way. The Wings are 5-11, including 0-7 on the road where they have an average scoring margin of minus-11.6. During the first half they have an average scoring margin of minus-7.4 in away games.

L.A.'s lack of depth could make them tire down the stretch but they should be able to build a decent lead in the first half. Back them on the 1H spread.

PREDICTION: First Half Los Angeles -4.5

Wednesday?s picks: 0-2
Season to date: 39-26

Ogwumike scores 22 points in Sparks' win
July 18, 2019

LOS ANGELES (AP) Nneka Ogwumike scored 13 of her 22 points in a decisive third quarter to help the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Dallas Wings 69-64 on Thursday.

Los Angeles trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half, then outscored Dallas 24-9 in the third to take its first lead, 52-51, since 11-10. Chelsea Gray highlighted the fourth with a no-look pass in the lane to Ogwumike for a 63-59 lead.

Chiney Ogwumike added 12 points, and Gray had 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals for Los Angeles (10-7), which does not play again at home until August 1. The Sparks finished 19 of 21 from the free-throw line.

Los Angeles star Candace Parker did not play for a third straight game because of an ankle injury.

The Sparks also are without guard Riquna Williams after she was suspended without pay for 10 games by the WNBA on Tuesday for a domestic violence incident. Williams was arrested April 29 and charged with two felony counts, one involving the assault of an individual with whom she was in a relationship and the other involving a threat to another person with a firearm. Her criminal case is ongoing.

Isabelle Harrison had 14 points and nine rebounds for Dallas (5-13). The Wings have lost 16 straight games on the road, nine this season, with their win coming on July 12, 2018, against the Sparks.

***********************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here??.

13) Extreme heat is forecast for the Albany/Saratoga area Saturday; NYRA has cancelled racing for Saturday at Saratoga, which is a wise but expensive decision to make.

12) Can you be considered one of the all-time great quarterbacks if you never won a Super Bowl? Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl, Dan Fouts never played in one, but their greatness was obvious. Its an interesting debate when you weigh who the all-time greats were.

11) I still think John Elway is the best QB ever; who do you think is the best ever?

10) Mookie Betts is the first Boston Red Sox player since Ted Williams in 1946 to score a run in 13 consecutive games.

9) Cincinnati Reds have homered 28 times in first inning this year, the most in MLB.

8) It still boggles my mind that the Cleveland Browns are favored to win the AFC North when they?ve been favored in only four of their 48 games the last three years.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Marlins put SS JT Riddle (forearm) on IL.
? Reds put C Curt Casali (knee), P David Rodriguez (shoulder) on the IL.
? Braves activated OF Ender Inciarte from the IL.
? Angels put C Jonathan Lucroy (broken nose) on IL.

6) Oddsmaking legend Jimmy Vaccaro is returning to Las Vegas to work at the SouthPoint Casino; he had been working at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.

5) Our prayers go out to UNLV offensive coordinator Barney Cotton, who needs a heart transplant and is stepping aside from his job with the Rebels.

4) Nationals 13, Braves 4? Stephen Strasburg had three hits, five RBI and allowed three runs in 5.1 IP as Washington closed within 5.5 games of Atlanta in the NL East.

3) Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard have been teammates for five years; they?ve started consecutive games 58 times.

Only nine of those 58 times did both deGrom/Syndergaard get wins.

2) In a fitting bit of symmetry, five guys were arrested Thursday for fighting at a Five Guys restaurant in Stuart, FL. Two adults, three juveniles were taken into custody; no report if they got their burgers to go or not.

1) My all-time basketball starting five: Kareem, Jordan, Bill Russell, Lebron and Magic.

Preview: Mystics (9-6) at Fever (6-12)
Date: July 19, 2019 7:00 PM EDT

The Washington Mystics continue to play hard even amid their roughest stretch of the season.

That likely won't change when the visiting Mystics try to prevent their season-high skid from reaching four games Friday night against an Indiana Fever team that's in danger of matching the single-season club record for consecutive home defeats.

Washington (9-6) was feeling good amid a five-game winning streak that appeared to be headed for six before its visit to Las Vegas on July 5 was postponed at halftime because of an earthquake in Southern California that was felt in Nevada. The Mystics were ahead in that contest, but have followed with three straight defeats.

That included losing star Elena Delle Donne to a broken nose at Los Angeles on July 7. Washington, 0-4 without Delle Donne on the floor in 2019, has allowed an average of 91.3 points during the three-game losing streak.

The Mystics led by as many as 15 in the first quarter of Saturday's rematch with Vegas at home, but the Aces came back with a 27-point second quarter and handed the hosts an 85-81 loss. Washington shot just 38.9 percent and went 7 of 28 from 3-point range, but the effort never waned.

"For us, it's just challenging ourselves to be better," guard Natasha Cloud, who had a team-high 18 points, said as posted on the Mystics' official Facebook page. "Mistakes are inevitable, we're never going to be perfect in this game. But, I'll take how hard we played any day."

As Washington looks to avoid losing four in a row for the first time since 2016, it still awaits the return of Delle Donne. A picture of the All-Star forward sporting a protective mask, apparently at practice, was posted on the Mystics' official Facebook page this week. Whether that means she'll be available Friday is unknown.

Regardless who is on the court for the Mystics, they should feel good about their chances against an Indiana team that's lost three in a row and won once in eight games. Kelsey Mitchell scored 14 points as the Fever (6-12) missed all 16 of their 3-point attempts in a 76-63 loss to Connecticut on Sunday.

It was the seventh consecutive home defeat for Indiana, which last won there against Dallas on June 7. The Fever dropped a franchise-worst eight straight at home in 2000.

"We're a really good mid-range shooting team," coach Pokey Chatman told the Fever's official website. "We have to stay true to who we are, and get those comfort 3s and not contested 3s."

Indiana veteran Candice Dupree had 11 points last weekend to pass Lisa Leslie for sixth on the WNBA career scoring list.

Preview: Dream (5-12) at Sun (11-6)
Date: July 19, 2019 7:30 PM EDT

With their inside-out game back on track, the Connecticut Sun seek a third straight victory Friday night when they face the Atlanta Dream to kick off a four-game homestand.

Connecticut has the best record in the WNBA at 11-6, and any lingering effects from a five-game losing streak appear to have dissipated after posting back-to-back victories. All-Star Jonquel Jones had a season-high 26 points and eight rebounds while Shekinna Stricklen added all 12 of her points via four 3-pointers to help the Sun cruise to a 76-63 win at Indiana on Sunday.

Jones, who was named WNBA Player of the Week for the fourth time this season Monday, has totaled 39 points and 19 rebounds in the two wins after being held to averages of 11.0 points and 8.4 rebounds during the Sun's five-game skid. The Sun also improved to 8-0 when Stricklen hits at least three treys in a game, and the guard is shooting 40 percent (42 for 105) from beyond the arc on the season.

"We got into the paint in the first half and I think that it opened it up for us in the second half and allowed us to use our legs and make nine 3s in the second half because we were so successful getting into the paint," Sun coach Curt Miller said to the team's official Twitter account. "That's not easy to do - three games in five days to make nine 3s on the road in the second half."

Alyssa Thomas found out she will be joining Jones at the WNBA All-Star game later this month in Las Vegas after the league tabbed her as one of the 12 reserves Monday. The teams will be drafted Tuesday by captains Elena Delle Donne of the Mystics and A'ja Wilson of the Aces.

Atlanta (5-12) is on the second leg of a three-game road swing after a tough 77-76 defeat at Chicago on Wednesday. Renee Montgomery hit six 3-pointers and scored 23 points while Jessica Breland added 10 and 11 rebounds, but the Dream's issues of closing teams out persisted as they squandered an eight-point fourth-quarter lead and were held to six points over the final 6:11.

Despite being last in the league in scoring at 70.2 points per game, the Dream have cleared 70 in three of their last four games - a run that began with a 78-75 victory over the Sun on July 10 when Tiffany Hayes scored 18 points and Breland pulled down a season-best 13 boards.

Atlanta, though, is still last in the league in overall shooting percentage (36.7) and 3-point shooting (28.3). Montgomery is three 3-pointers shy of becoming just the 13th player in WNBA history to hit 500.

The Sun won the first two meetings between the teams this season, including an 86-76 victory at Mohegan Sun on June 21 as Stricklen buried seven 3-pointers and finished with 24 points. Connecticut has won 14 of its last 15 home games dating back to last year.
