Preview: Dream (2-5) at Sun (8-1)
Date: June 21, 2019 7:30 PM EDT

Currently the hottest team in the WNBA, the Connecticut Sun look to extend their franchise-record 12-game home winning streak and record their seventh consecutive victory overall Friday night when they host the Atlanta Dream.

Connecticut (8-1) has the league's best record and threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the WNBA with its 81-67 triumph over reigning champion Seattle on Sunday. Alyssa Thomas scored 20 points and Shekinna Stricklen added 16 as the Sun pulled away from the Storm in the fourth quarter behind eight points from Thomas in a game-breaking 12-4 burst.

"You just try to take care of the home court," Thomas told The Associated Press. "We have had a lot of success here and we feed off the energy of the crowd."

Jonquel Jones, who was named Eastern Conference player of the week for the third week running, chipped in 13 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists for her second straight double-double and sixth on the season. Jones is averaging a career-best 17.2 points and a league-high 12.0 rebounds.

Connecticut, which avenged its last regular-season home loss with Sunday's victory, has averaged 85 points in its five home wins in 2019 while outscoring opponents by 12 per contest.

Atlanta (2-5) is still struggling to find a rhythm without star Angel McCoughtry but did snap a five-game losing streak with an 88-78 win over Indiana on Wednesday. Tiffany Hayes scored a season-high 28 points as the Dream broke out offensively, registering a season high in points and 3-pointers made (10) while committing just six turnovers.

"I think we were due," Dream coach Nicki Collen told the team's official website. "I think we were due for a good quarter. I do think this team still believes. I don't think we ever lost the locker room. ??? I think what we've battled so far this year is kind of the expectation and the idea of you still have to grind and you still have to make progress every day and compete on every possession. That's what we've done."

Renee Montgomery contributed season highs of 16 points and nine assists in the victory while also hitting 4 of 9 from 3-point range. Atlanta will be counting on Montgomery to provide that kind of backcourt scoring with Alex Bentley away representing Belarus at the EuroBasket tournament in Serbia.

To fill Bentley's spot on the roster, the Dream signed Natasha Hiedeman, the 2019 Big East Player of the Year at Marquette who was one of the last preseason cuts by the Sun after being selected 18th overall in the WNBA Draft.

Jones had 17 points and 13 rebounds as Connecticut grinded to a 65-59 victory at Atlanta on June 9. Thomas added 12 points and 12 boards as the Sun won despite being held to a season low in points. Hayes and Brittany Sykes scored 14 points apiece for the Dream but were a combined 12 for 37.

Preview: Fever (4-5) at Sky (5-2)
Date: June 21, 2019 8:00 PM EDT

After a successful two-game road swing, the Chicago Sky look to record a fifth consecutive victory and stay unbeaten at home Friday night when they host the slumping Indiana Fever.

Chicago (5-2) is trying to keep Connecticut in sight as it has the league's second-best record. The Sky's three-guard combo of Courtney Vandersloot, Allie Quigley, and Diamond DeShields combined for 50 points in their 91-83 win at New York on Wednesday night, with Vandersloot sinking 5 of 6 free throws in the final 37.2 seconds.

"That's how you win games. Everyone says free throws are how you win games," said Vandersloot, who finished with 25 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, to The Associated Press. "We had the people willing to knock some shots down. That's how you win down the stretch."

Vandersloot leads the WNBA with 8 assists per game and is on pace to lead the league in assists for the second straight year and fourth time in her career. But she has been willing to take on a greater scoring role - her 11.9 points per game is the second-best of her career - as Chicago seeks its first five-game winning streak since July 7-20, 2013.

"I've spoken about it since I got hired, how valuable she was, not only to us but to the WNBA," first-year coach James Wade told the Chicago Sun-Times as he stumped for Vandersloot to get an All-Star nod. "I hope she gets celebrated as such."

Indiana (4-5) has cooled off since winning three of its first four games, looking more like the team that was expected to take smaller steps in its rebuild after a 6-win 2018. The Fever came undone in the fourth quarter of their 88-78 loss to Atlanta on Wednesday night, scoring just one basket in a 3:44 stretch while failing to cut into a five-point deficit.

Candice Dupree scored 19 points while rookie center Teaira McCowan had season bests of 14 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks in her first pro start. The 6-foot-7 McCowan tied the rookie franchise record for rebounds set by Tamika Catchings in 2002, and coach Pokey Chatman was especially pleased with the No. 3 overall pick's effort on the defensive end.

"Those blocks are wonderful, but we also look at the shots she alters. Fans love the blocks, but coaches love all the ones she alters," the Fever coach told the club's official website. "She is learning the pace of the game. She held her own and she'll continue to get better."

Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell has averaged 16.7 points in her last three games but is shooting 32 percent in that stretch.

Vandersloot had nine points and eight assists to help the Sky record a 70-64 victory at Indiana on Saturday. Quigley finished with 18 points as Chicago shook off a slow start in which it scored four points in the first 6:22.

Preview: Sparks (4-4) at Storm (5-4)
Date: June 21, 2019 10:30 PM EDT

Despite missing some key figures, things have gone relatively well to begin the Seattle Storm's follow-up of their championship season. Now, they're about to get one important piece back into the puzzle.

Just over a month after undergoing surgery to remove a tumor from his digestive tract, coach Dan Hughes makes his season debut Friday night when the Storm look to remain undefeated at home and hand the Los Angeles Sparks a third straight defeat.

The veteran WNBA coach made his cancer diagnosis public prior to the beginning of the season and underwent surgery to remove a carcinoid tumor on May 14. His recovery has gone well and Hughes is finally ready to run the team, which is a decent 5-4 under assistant Gary Kloppenburg, despite missing stars Breanna Stewart (Achilles) and Sue Bird (knee).

"(I'm) grateful to Gary Kloppenburg and the Storm coaching staff, who guided our team through a grueling stretch of the schedule with finesse," the 64-year Hughes said. "Our team has demonstrated incredible resilience, and we will continue to fight each and every game."

The Storm have played all but two games away from home and fell 81-67 at league-leading Connecticut on Sunday to complete a 2-2 road stretch. Having Hughes back on the sidelines could be a source of motivation for Seattle, which has won both of its home contests. Its home games are being played at two different area arenas while KeyArena undergoes renovation.

"It's going to be great to have Dan back," Kloppenburg said.

Natasha Howard (19.6 points per game, 9.2 rebounds per game) has been a major presence for the Storm in the absence of their two superstars. She's averaged 21.3 points in the last four games after scoring 20 on Sunday, when Seattle was outscored 25-13 in the final quarter.

This will be the first 2019 meeting between the Storm and Sparks (4-4). Los Angeles fell 81-52 at home to Washington on Tuesday, even with its own superstar Candace Parker playing for the first time since suffering a preseason hamstring injury.

Parker had three points on 1-of-9 shooting and five rebounds in just under 25 minutes as Los Angeles shot just 28.8 percent, including 3 of 19 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over an astounding 26 times. Parker committed six of those turnovers.

"Candace, obviously, is not at her peak levels, and, obviously, a lot of our group, expected things to happen - because she's back - that are just not going to magically appear," coach Derek Fisher said as posted on the Sparks' official Facebook page.

"We still have to manage the details and the small things that go into the execution."

While Los Angeles aims to get back on track, it can also win three consecutive road contests for the first time this season. Guard Chelsea Gray is averaging 15.6 points during a strong start to her season, but looks to rebound after scoring eight on 4-of-12 shooting versus Washington.

Parker averaged 18 points while the Sparks dropped two of three against the Storm in 2018.

Sun Devils lost four of last five bowls, giving up 38.8 ppg; they?re 10-4-1 in last 15 games as an underdog. Last two years, ASU is 7-2-1 vs spread coming off a loss; they?ll have a new QB this year, playing behind an experienced OL.

California? Golden Bears made only 2nd bowl since 2011 LY; they?ve got only 4 starters back on offense this year. Cal lost to arch-rival Stanford last five years, by average score of 32-19 (1-4 vs spread). Under Wilcox, Cal is 11-5 ATS as an underdog, 2-5-1 as a favorite.

Colorado? Last year?s 5-0 start turned into an injury-riddled 5-7 debacle that cost MacIntyre his job. Buffs have been to one bowl since 2007; their last bowl win was 33-28 over UTEP in the 2004 Houston Bowl. Mel Tucker is a long-time DC; this is his first head coaching job.

Oregon? This is first time since 2016 that Ducks have same HC two years in row; they lost three of last four bowls, winning LY?s bowl 7-6 over Michigan State. Last three years, under three HCs, Oregon is 1-7-1 ATS as a road underdog.

Oregon State? Last four years, Beavers are 9-39 SU, 6-11 ATS as a home underdog, 9-13-1 as a road dog- their last bowl was in 2013, when Mike Riley was HC. In their last 25 games, OSU is -24 in turnovers; they?re very experienced this year, should show improvement.

USC? Trojans were 5-7 LY; they?re 3-9 vs spread in last 12 games as a home favorite. USC is 3-2 in its last five bowls, scoring 45-45-52 in the wins, 21-7 in losses. Since 2012, Trojans are 3-12 as a road underdog.

Stanford? Won 8+ games every year for last decade; their last three bowls (2-1) were decided by total of five points. Cardinal is 8-3 in last 11 games as a road favorite; over last decade, they?re 5-0 ATS as a home underdog.

UCLA? Bruins are 13-24 SU the last three years; since 2014, they?re 8-15 as a home favorite. Over last decade, they?re 39-53 ATS (42.4%) in Pac-12 games. In their last three bowls, UCLA allayed 35-37-35 points, losing two of three.

Utah? Last two years, Utes are 8-2 vs spread as home favorites; since 2014, they?re 11-2 as a road underdog. Whittingham is 11-2 SU in his career in bowl games. Senior QB Huntley has 19 career starts.

Washington? Huskies are 32-9 SU last three years, but went 0-3 in bowls; they?ll have a new QB this year (Georgia transfer Eason- 13 starts for Dawgs). Washington has + turnover ratio the last seven years, going +51 the last five years.

Washington State? From 2009-14, Coogs were 19-54; from 2015-18, they?re 37-15; Mike Leach is a damn good coach. Since 2013, WSU is 16-5 ATS as a road underdog. This year?s QB is Gage Gubrud, a grad transfer from I-AA Eastern Washington.

Preview: Liberty (3-6) at Lynx (4-5)
Date: June 22, 2019 8:00 PM EDT

Short-handed but looking to build on a gritty victory, the New York Liberty look to take a step closer to .500 on Saturday night when they attempt to beat the Minnesota Lynx for the second time in 10 days.

New York (3-6) has stabilized itself after an 0-4 start, but the inconsistency on a game-to-game basis remains. The Liberty have alternated wins and losses in their last four games after a 91-83 home defeat to Chicago on Wednesday night.

Asia Durr scored 19 points and Tina Charles added 16 for the Liberty, whose four fourth-quarter turnovers killed any chance of establishing an offensive rhythm to overtake the Sky. Amanda Zahui B. contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds in her final game before joining Sweden for the EuroBasket tournament in Serbia.

Charles hit a pair of 3-pointers but was also 7 for 21 overall as she - like the Liberty - is searching for consistency on the offensive end. Charles has shot just 29.2 percent (19 for 65) over her last four games while averaging 10.8 points, well off her season mark of 17.7 per contest.

"I mean, we want all of these guys to shoot it better," Liberty coach Katie Smith told High Post Hoops.com. "It would help us out in the long run. I just want (Charles) to be aggressive and take aggressive shots and not hesitate. And again playing inside out, getting on the block, taking moves, obviously, there's a lot of pressure in there.

"Us finding her when she's got easier opportunities without the defense set. So there's a lot of stuff that goes into it, but I also just want her to make that she's continuing to be aggressive every single night."

Zahui B. will be the second Liberty player at the EuroBasket tournament, with Bria Hartley already there representing France. New York could be forced to use an emergency hardship salary cap extension since it currently has fewer than the league-minimum 11 players on the active roster.

Minnesota (4-5) is looking to avoid a fifth consecutive loss that has dropped it below .500. The Lynx have lost all four games during their skid by six or fewer points after an 80-75 defeat to Las Vegas on Sunday. Damiris Dantas scored a season-high 22 points, but the Lynx were outscored 16-3 in the final 4:47 while blowing an eight-point lead.

"You have to understand the desperation. That was part of the teaching this week, different things that we're facing," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve told the team's official website Friday. "Some of it is just listening out of a timeout, executing what you're supposed to do in a play. Does it take time? I hope not. I hope it's something we can recognize and immediately do."

Dantas has run hot and cold, scoring a combined 21 points in her previous four games before hitting five 3-pointers while shooting 8 of 15 overall. The fifth-year forward, trying to help pick up the slack for the absence of injured starter Seimone Augustus, is averaging 10.1 points overall but has been held to five or fewer points on four occasions.

New York recorded a 75-69 home win over Minnesota on June 12 as Kia Nurse scored 11 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter and rookie Asia Durr added a season-high 20. Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Lynx nearly overcame a 15-point deficit.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Odyssey Sims scored 20 points and Sylvia Fowles had 19 points and 10 rebounds in the Minnesota Lynx's 92-83 victory over the New York Liberty on Saturday night.

Napheesa Collier added 19 points and nine rebounds for Minnesota (5-5). Fowles and Collier combined to shoot 24 for 38 from the field and the Lynx finished at 51.6%.

Minnesota outscored New York 28-14 in the third quarter. Reshanda Gray's 3-pointer with 3:46 left brought New York to 76-71, but it couldn't get closer.

Kia Nurse led the Liberty with 24 points, and Tina Charles had 22.

ACES 86, STARS 68

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Reserve Dearica Hamby scored 27 points on 11-for-14 shooting and Las Vegas' strong second quarter propelled the Aces past Dallas.

A'ja Wilson added 20 points, combining with Hamby to shoot 20 for 26 from the field.

Dallas led 24-22 after the first quarter but the Wings fell apart in the second. Las Vegas (5-4) outscored Dallas (2-6) 27-10 in the period and wasn't challenged again, leading by as many as 27 points.

Arike Ogunbowale had 25 points for Dallas, which was 2 for 14 in the second quarter. The Wings missed 25 of 31 3-point attempts.

Sunday?s 6-pack

Spreads for early season college games:

? Florida (-7.5) vs Miami

? Cincinnati (-3.5) vs UCLA

? Utah (-6) vs BYU

? Wake Forest (-3.5) vs Utah State

? Wisconsin (-11) vs South Florida

? Colorado (-11) vs Colorado State

Quote of the Day
?Trying to walk around the bases and get to the plate, and trying to get in the dugout and hold everything in. Man, that was hard. It?s gonna be up there for me ? for my career, for my family, my wife, Deidre, and my five kids and my friends and family that are here in town. It?s just a moment that I will treasure forever.?
Albert Pujols, on his reception in St Louis this weekend

Sunday?s quiz
In 2001, Albert Pujols? rookie season, which position did he play the most games at?

Saturday?s quiz
When the Buccaneers came into the NFL in 1976, Seattle Seahawks also joined the league that season.

Friday?s quiz
Steve Spurrier played QB for the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who went 0-14 in their first season in the NFL.

*******************************

Sunday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) UConn is expected to leave the AAC and go back to the Big East for the 2020-21 season; not sure what this does to their football program, since the Big East isn?t a football league.

Huskies have made the NCAA basketball tournament only once in the last five years.

UConn leaving the AAC raises the question: who replaces the Huskies in the AAC?

12) NHL does their draft better than any other league; the whole league is under one roof, all the coaches/GM?s, and they move the draft around North America every year- they did that before the NFL started doing it.

Philadelphia Flyers drafted a kid who went to Florida on a golf scholarship, then thought better of it and transferred to Minnesota, where he walked on to the hockey team. Not a lot of guys in the NHL went to college on a golf scholarship.

11) San Francisco Giants are thinking about taking their bullpens off the field and putting them under the stands in right-center field, which would mean the fences in ?Triples Alley? would have to come in, making the dimensions much more hitter-friendly.

10) Twice in the last week, Cardinals? pitcher John Flaherty was used as a pinch-runner in the last inning; one time he was thrown out at the plate to end the game, Thursday he got picked off second to end the game. His pinch-running career might be over.

9) Former Angels? OF Tim Salmon has the most home runs (299) by anyone who never made an All-Star team.

8) Talked last week about the Angels DFA?ing OF Carlos Puello; he quickly found a home with the Miami Marlins, where he is now their rightfielder.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Indians put P Mike Clevinger (ankle) on IL.
? MLB suspended Texas 3B Asdrubel Cabrera for four games.
? MLB suspended Oakland P Frankie Montas for 80 games (PEDs)

6) New York Daily News was not invited to a Friday press conference for Knicks? draft picks RJ Barrett and Ignas Brazdeikis, but every other NYC outlet covering the team was. Owner James Dolan doesn?t like the paper?s coverage and has effectively banned them from covering the team.

Dolan is one of the worst owners in sports, if not the worst.

5) In his last three starts, Jacob deGrom threw 112-116-113 pitches, which is indicative of teams starting to stretch their better starting pitchers out a little more.

Stats show that with relievers pitching more and more innings, their ERA?s are going higher and higher, so this is the result of that.

4) Yu Darvish didn?t get a decision in any of his last ten starts, which ties a big league record that was last done in 1977 (Lerch, D?Acquisto), and has only been done four times ever.

3) Michigan-Vanderbilt will play a best-of-3 series for the College World Series title starting Monday.

2) Dodgers 5, Rockies 4? Alex Verdugo hit a walk-off homer for LA- they walked off Colorado Friday night, too.

1) If the baseball playoffs started today??.
