Saturday’s 6-pack
First 6 picks of the 1973 baseball draft
1) Texas— David Clyde, P— Had an 18-33 record in five seasons.
2) Phillies— John Stearns, C— Made four All-Star games in 11 seasons.
3) Brewers— Robin Yount, SS— Hall of Famer who later moved to CF.
4) Padres— Dave Winfield OF— Hall of Famer; drafted in three sports.
5) Indians— Glenn Tufts, 1B— Never got above AA in the minor leagues.
6) Giants— Johnnie LeMaster, SS— Hit .222 in 12 big league seasons.

Quote of the Day
“…….all the guys sitting, resting. That’s the only thing I probably don’t like. Just play, man. If you’re 80%, 70% – you gotta play. I don’t like all the sitting, missing games and stuff like that. These people might have enough money to come to one game, you know what I’m saying? That might be the game they come to and then you’re sitting out.”
Anthony Edwards of the Timberwolves, talking about NBA load management

Saturday’s quiz
Hall of Famer Bill Russell won 11 titles in 13 years playing with the Celtics; which NBA team drafted Russell? (it wasn’t Boston)

Friday’s quiz
Ja Morant played his college basketball at Murray State.

Thursday’s quiz
Last year was the last time a #2-seed lost to a #15-seed in first round of NCAA’s; Saint Peter’s (+18) upset Kentucky 85-79 in overtime.

**********************************

Saturday’s Den: Baseball questions, with spring training underway

— Baseball changed lot of rules this year; going to be interesting to see how that impacts play this season. No more shifts, a play clock to quicken pace of play, bigger bases, a limit to how many times a pitcher can throw to first base. I think they’ve made good rule changes.

— Watching the first spring training games Friday with the pitch clock, TV broadcasts will be changing; lot of fewer replays of action right after it happens, because there is a 0:30 clock until the next pitch is thrown. Lot less small talk between pitches.

— San Diego Padres spent lot of $$$ this year, trying hard to unseat the Dodgers in NL West, but then star 3B Manny Machado said he will opt out of his contract after this season, hoping to make more than the $30M/year he was scheduled to make thru 2028.

Will that be a distraction for the Padres, or is is just business as usual?

— I’ve mentioned this here before, but my dad grew up in New York City, was.a big Brooklyn Dodger fan. When I was a kid, I learned quickly to never say the name “O’Malley”— Walter O’Malley was the Dodgers’ owner who moved the team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. My dad didn’t like Walter O’Malley, not one bit.

San Diego Padres are now owned by Peter Seidler, who is Walter O’Malley’s grandson. Wish my dad was here to get his reaction to that; chances are he wouldn’t like the Padres very much.

— Highest current projected payrolls for this baseball season:

$300M— New York (NL)
$261M— New York (AL)
$241M— Phillies
$225M— Braves
$212M— Angels
$205M— Padres

— Lowest current projected payrolls for this baseball season:

$40,925,000— A’s
$45,025,000— Orioles
$59,262,500— Pirates
$64,451,211— Rays
$48,624,500— Reds
$75,010,000— Guardians

— Mets’ owner Steve Cohen has raised a lot of eyebrows by also spending a boatload of $$$ to make his team a winning team. Hell, wish he owned the A’s, but now they’re just as despicable as the other New York team. It is no fun rooting for a team that doesn’t try to win.

Cohen loosely inspired the character Bobby Axelrod on the Showtime series Billions.

— The A’s situation will be interesting; will they move to Las Vegas? Portland? Doesn’t sound like they’ll get a new stadium in Oakland. Would be nice if their cheapskate owner would try to win— what a novel idea.

If they move to Las Vegas and are still cheapskates, someone might wind up like Joe Pesci’s character in Casino.

— Tampa Bay Rays also have a stadium issue; will they stay in Florida or move to Montreal? Charlotte? Nashville?

— Once the two stadium issues are resolved, MLB will move ahead with expanding to 32 teams; the expansion fees will recoup $$$ owners lost during the shortened 2020 season. Having 32 big league teams will make scheduling a lot easier.

— Texas Rangers are paying SS Corey Seager/2B Marcus Semien a combined $57M a year, but they went 68-94 last year, so they hired future Hall of Famer Bruce Bochy as their new skipper, added Jacob deGrom as a mound ace. We’ll see if that makes Texas a contender; they’ve had six straight losing seasons.

— Angels have two of the game’s great stars, Trout/Ohtani, but they were 73-89 last year.

Angels haven’t made the playoffs since 2014- their last winning season was 2015, and all that with a payroll of $212M for this year. Pitching is kind of important; the Angels need more of it.

— Speaking of Ohtani, he can be a free agent next winter; going to be quite a bidding war for his services. Would the Angels consider trading him this summer?

— Aaron Judge hit 62 home runs last year; what does he do for an encore? Teammate Giancarlo Stanton hit 59 homers in 2017, but hasn’t ht more than 38 since then.

— Not sure what the Red Sox/Cubs are doing; big market teams that aren’t spending much $$$. Red Sox won World Series in 2018; they’ve made playoffs once since then. Boston finished last in AL East last year, 21 games out of first place.

Cubs missed the playoffs in three of last four seasons; their prospects for this year aren’t great.

— Detroit Tigers moved their fences in this year, mostly in CF; will that help their hitters/hurt their pitchers?

— Cleveland Guardians won AL Central by 11 games last year; they were only team in the division to finish over .500. Will they be challenged more this year? White Sox let Jose Abreu go, Minnesota re-tooled some but not a lot. Cleveland made playoffs five of last seven years, but has not made it to the World Series since losing Game 7 to the Cubs in 2016.

— Seattle Mariners made playoffs last year for first time since 2001; at this time last year, I had three Seattle hitters on my fantasy team, but their ballpark isn’t conducive to scoring runs— got rid of two of the three, and the third guy got traded to Milwaukee.

— My baseball TV experience will be better this season; couldn’t watch the World Series last year. The local FOX station was/is at war with DirecTV, so that station was off my TV, so no World Series. I’ve dumped DirecTV for YouTube TV. Looking forward to this season.

64.1% of their points on 2-point shots— Long Beach State
62.6%— Wright State
62.2%— Cleveland State
61.9%— St John’s
60.7%— Rider
60.5%— IUPUI

Quote of the Day
“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or…….
we can rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.”
Abraham Lincoln

Sunday’s quiz
Which NFL team drafted John Elway, then traded him to the Broncos?

Saturday’s quiz
Hall of Famer Bill Russell won 11 titles in 13 years playing with the Celtics; the St Louis Hawks drafted Russell, then traded him to Boston, for Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan.

Friday’s quiz
Ja Morant played his college basketball at Murray State.

***************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday…….

Big 14
Iowa 112, Michigan State 106 OT— Hawkeyes outscored MSU 23-10 in last 1:34 of regulation to force overtime. 23 points in 1:34; hard to do. Iowa made 17-36 on the arc.

Spartans are 5-7 in their last 12 games; Iowa split its last six games.

Indiana 79, Purdue 71— Purdue loses for fourth time in six games, after a 22-1 start. Their guards aren’t good enough to win a national title with. Other than big guy Zach Edey, Purdue shot 30.4% from the floor. Indiana is 10-3 in its last thirteen games.

WCC
Gonzaga 77, Saint Mary’s 68— Zags shot 63% inside arc, finish tied for first in WCC with the Gaels. Gonzaga had four players score in double figures; Saint Mary’s had one guy score more than 10 points. Chances are these teams will have their rubber match at the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas a week from Monday.

ACC
Florida State 85, Miami 84— Hurricanes led 56-31 early in 2nd half; they lose on 25-footer at the buzzer, which ends their 7-game win streak. Loss drops Miami into a 3-way tie for second in ACC with Virginia/Clemson, game behind Pitt in loss column.

Clemson 96, NC State 71— This was 55-29 at halftime; impressive win for the Tigers, who are on the bubble and need wins like this. Tigers made 10-22 on arc, scored 1.37 points/possession, which is almost a perfect day on offense.

North Carolina 71, Virginia 63— Tar Heels get their first Quad 1 win over struggling Virginia, which scored 57.3 ppg in splitting their last four games.

Pitt 99, Syracuse 82— Natives are restless in central New York; Syracuse lost six of its last nine games, is 9-9 in a down year for the ACC and Jim Boeheim is 78 years old.

Big X
TCU 83, Texas Tech 82— Horned Frogs led by 12 with 7:39 left, blew the lead but pulled the game out at the end, just their second win in last seven games. Mike Miles is back for TCU; he scored 24 points- he was out for most of their 1-6 skid.

Kansas State 73, Oklahoma State 68— Damaging loss for OSU, which is squarely on the bubble; they led by 8 with 11:39 left. Cowboys have now lost four games in a row, K-State snapped a 4-game road losing streak; they’re 10-6 in Big X, after going 13-41 the previous three seasons.

SEC
Mississippi State 69, Texas A&M 62— Bulldogs won seven of their last nine games, are right on the bubble; they shot 65% inside arc in this game. Chris Jans is a good coach; he made the NCAA’s three of four years at New Mexico State, was 21-12 in his only year at Bowling Green.

Alabama 86, Arkansas 83— Arkansas led by 9 at halftime, but Alabama scored 58 points in second half. Brandon Miller is probably the best player in the country, as a freshman; he had 24 points in this game, after scoring 41 the last game.

Mountain West
San Diego State 73, New Mexico 71
— Lobos led by 13 early in second half, but after being the last unbeaten team in country, they’ve now lost seven of their last nine games. Aztecs have a 2-game lead in Mountain West, with two games left in regular season.

Pac-12
Arizona State 89, Arizona 88— Kid on Sun Devils drained a 55-foot desperation heave at the buzzer as ASU pulled the upset; Arizona led by 10 with 6:30 left. Wildcats were only 23-34 on foul line; ASU was 6-10.

Big West
Hawai’i 72, Cal-Irvine 67— Anteaters led by 9 with 14:27 left, but lost their second straight game; they’re in a 3-way tie for first with Riverside, UCSB; Fullerton/Hawai’i are a game behind them.

Upsets of the Day
Florida State (+14.5) 85, Miami 84
George Mason (+11) 74, Dayton 69
Eastern Michigan (+7.5) 75, Ball State 68
Indiana (+7.5) 79, Purdue 71
Oklahoma (+7) 61, Iowa State 50
Tex-San Antonio (+7) 95, FIU 91
Clemson (+6) 96, NC State 71

Big Sky
Idaho State 71, Eastern Washington 63
— First conference loss for the Eagles, who hadn’t lost since December 13th. Doesn’t really matter; EWU needs to win Big Sky Tournament to make NCAA’s anyway, but a red flag since Idaho State is 11-19.

Conference USA
UAB 72, Western Kentucky 60— Blazers won five in row, nine of last ten games; star guard Walker is back from an injury, and a UAB-Florida Atlantic showdown in C-USA Tournament seems likely to happen.

FAU 75, UTEP 49— Owls are 26-3, having a great season; their subs play 10th-most minutes in country, which figures to help them in the C-USA Tournament.

Horizon League
Milwaukee 81, Cleveland State 72— Vikings’ loss gives Youngstown State the regular season title; Cleveland State, Milwaukee and Northern Kentucky all tie for 2nd.

Ivy League
— Yale, Princeton, Penn are in a 3-way tie for first with one game left. The Ivy tournament is four teams; Brown leads Cornell by a game for 4th place, but Brown plays Yale and Cornell plays Columbia next week, so a tie for 4th and one-game playoff is likely.

— Conference tournaments start next week; Atlantic Sun tournament starts on Monday, as one of the best times of the year is about to begin.

Monday’s 6-pack
Teams forcing highest %age of turnovers, and their W-L records:
25.7%— Iowa State (17-11, 8-8)
25.3%— UNLV (17-11, 6-10)
24.8%— VCU (22-7, 13-3)
24.5%— Missouri (21-8, 9-7)
24.3%— UCLA (25-4, 16-2)
24.1%— Stephen F Austin (19-10, 11-5)

Quote of the Day
“I’m not the savior here. I’m not playing. I’m watching, just like you guys. As a team, we’ve got to mature. … We’ve got to grow up — if we want to win a championship. There’s no young team that’s ever won a championship, mentally or physically.”
Dallas Mavericks’ coach Jason Kidd, after losing a game they led by 27 points

Monday’s quiz
Stan Kroenke owns the Los Angeles Rams; he also owns an NHL team and an NBA team- they play in the same city (not Los Angeles). Which teams?

Sunday’s quiz
Baltimore Colts drafted John Elway, then traded him to the Broncos, then moved the franchise to Indianapolis the next year.

Saturday’s quiz
Hall of Famer Bill Russell won 11 titles in 13 years playing with the Celtics; the St Louis Hawks drafted Russell, then traded him to Boston, for Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan.

Monday’s Den: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

— College basketball conference tournaments start this week; I like to study history, but the history of these tournaments is a little odd. The results are somewhat random. For instance…….

Last seven years, seven different teams have won the Atlantic 15 tournament

Last five years, five different teams won in ACC, CAA and Conference USA.

10 of last 11 years, Big Sky tournament was won by the #1 seed or team that tied for 1st.

When I say “last seven years” I’m not counting 2020, the COVID year, where no tournament was played in most conferences.

Check out our Hoops page for college basketball tournament info all thru March, starting on Tuesday night.

— Atlantic Sun conference tournament tips things off tonight; Florida Gulf Coast-Queens and Bellarmine-North Florida, with both games available on ESPN+.

— Lindenwood Lions are in their first year of D-I basketball; they struggled thru a 2-11 skid, are 11-20 overall, 6-12 in the OVC, but they won their last two games, both in overtime, as they snuck into the OVC Tournament— they’ll play SE Missouri State in the first round Wednesday.

— Atlantic 15 is ranked as the #12 league right now, their worst ranking since 2007; the league is going to get only one team in the NCAA’s for the first time since 2005, when George Washington was the only A-15 team to make the NCAA’s.

— Since Randy Bennett has been their coach, Saint Mary’s has had 23 Australian players on their roster- they have four this season. Lot of mid-majors are loading their rosters with more foreign players. Siena has players from six different countries, six guys who will be brushing snow off their cars Tuesday, when we get hit with a snowstorm here in Albany.

— Ole Miss fired basketball coach Kermit Davis this week; Rebels are 24-37 the last two years, 7-27 in SEC games. Davis won 332 games in 16 years at Middle Tennessee before coming to Ole Miss; he’s a very good coach.

Not sure how good a basketball job Ole Miss is; you really want to recruit basketball players to a school where a decent amount of the fans run around waving the Confederate Flag?

SEC is a tough enough league on its own; Ole Miss is a difficult job.

— San Diego Padres/Manny Machado agreed on an 11-year, $350M deal, as ownership in San Diego goes all-in to unseat the Dodgers in the NL West.

— Washington P MacKenzie Gore is wearing number 1 this season; can’t remember another pitcher wearing number 1, so I hit the Interweb.

My research indicates Matt Young also wore number 1 for the Mariners in 1990

— New York Mets won 78.9% of their replay challenges last year, by far the best replay record in the big leagues. Next-best record on replay challenges was 64%.

— Miami Marlins were 24-40 in one-run games last year; they’re likely to have four guys in their lineup this year who are normally second basemen. Jazz Chisholm is going to play CF for the first time in his career, Jean Segura will play 3B and Joey Wendle SS, with newly-acquired Luis Arraez at second base. We’ll see how that works out for them.

— This will be the first season ever where every major league team will play every other major league team during the regular season. Batters are going to see pitchers fewer and fewer times, which figures to hurt offense some.

Back in the old days, in 1960, Dodgers-Giants played 22 games against each other. This season, divisional rivals will play each only 13 times.

Lakers 111, Dallas 108— Mavericks led by 27 points midway thru second quarter, but let the game slip away, their fourth loss in five games.

Portland 131, Houston 114— Damian Lillard scored 71 points against a team that has made tanking an art form. Victor Wembanyama is the guy everyone wants to draft in June; Rockets are 13-47, half-game “ahead” of San Antonio for the top spot in the draft lottery.

Golden State 109, Minnesota 104— Warriors are 20-18 when Steph Curry plays, 11-12 when he sits out. I was surprised by that; thought the difference would be bigger.

Kings 176, Clippers 175 2OT— Friday’s game was 2nd-highest scoring regular season game in NBA history; Malik Monk played 41:00- Sacramento was +22 during that time, which means in the 17:00 he was on the bench, the Kings were minus-21.

Nuggets 134, Clippers 124 OT— LA’s airplane got struck by lightning on their way to Denver; rough couple of days for the Clippers.
