Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Interesting pointspreads for Week 14 games:
? New England @ LA Rams (-6)
? Green Bay (-7.5) @ Detroit
? Tennessee (-7.5) @ Jacksonville
? Dallas (-3.5) @ Cincinnati
? Arizona (-2.5) @ NJ Giants
? Houston (-2.5) @ Chicago

Americans who have died from COVID-19: 283,326
PLEASE wear a mask when you go out.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's Den: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Bills 34, San Francisco 24
? Buffalo won five of its last six games, covered last four.
? At one point, Bills scored on six consecutive possessions.
? Allen threw for 375 yards; why did the Vikings trade Shelton Diggs?
? 10 of their 12 games went over the total.

? 49ers lost four of their last five games.
? First two series of game: both teams were stopped on other team?s 1-yard line.
? 49ers in 2nd half: 5 drives- 2 TD?s, a FG, two INTs.
? 49ers allowed 20 or fewer points in their wins, 32 ppg in their losses.

12) Washington 23, Pittsburgh 17
? Washington won four of last six games, covered five of last seven.
? Washington outscored last five opponents 95-22in second half.
? Washington is 18-12-1 ATS in last 31 games as a road underdog.
? Washington/Giants are 5-7, tied atop NFC East.

? Steelers led this game 14-0 early, 14-3 at halftime.
? Pittsburgh is now 78-2-1 at Heinz Field, when they led by 14+ points.
? Roethlisberger threw for 305 yards; Steelers ran ball for only 21 yards.
? Under is 5-1-1 in their last seven games.

11) Mack Brown is the football coach at North Carolina, a very good coach, but apparently he isn?t the smartest person in his family. Brown?s daughter Katherine Ryan won $22,801 on Jeopardy! Friday night and returned this week to defend her title.

Jeopardy! trivia: Apparently they give you some areas of knowledge that might appear on the show you?re going to be on, so you can study up in advance. Didn?t know that.

10) New Jersey Jets fired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams Monday morning, after the Jets got burned on a 46-yard TD pass with 0:05 left in a 31-28 loss to the Raiders. Receiver who caught the game-winning pass was single-covered, which is very unusual in that situation.

9) Kendall Hinton is a practice squad WR for the Broncos, but he had to play QB last week, when the NFL ruled all of Denver?s QB?s ineligible because of COVID protocols. Things did not go well for Hinton or the Broncos, but Hinton got a nice note a few days ago.

Tom Matte was a good running back for the Baltimore Colts from 1961-75, but in 1965, he had to play three games at QB for the Colts, after Johnny Unitas and Gary Cuozzo were both injured. Matte wrote Kendall Hinton a 2-page letter last week, which is pretty cool.

Back in 1965, Matte wore a writstband with the team?s plays on it; he is thought to be the first player to do that. His coach with the Colts was Don Shula, whose son Mike is now QB coach in Denver.

8) Iowa State is playing in the Big X title game; the Cyclones haven?t won a league title in football since 1912. 19-freakin?-12!!! How does some big $$$ school not hire Matt Campbell?

7) An NFL oddity:
? 2014 Carolina Panthers went 7-8-1, but made the playoffs- they beat Arizona 26-16, then lost 31-17 to the Seahawks.
? The next season, the 2015 Panthers went 15-1 and won NFC title; before losing Super Bowl to Denver. Before this year?s Steelers, they were the last NFL team to start a season 11-0.

6) Random obscure knowledge: I?m watching a college football game late Saturday night, and it turns out one of the players raises alpacas in his hometown. Alpacas look like llamas, but they are smaller than llamas; it turns out that alpacas have a three-chambered stomach, to enhance digestion. Just thought you?d like to know.

5) Montana Grizzlies are usually one of the best basketball teams in the Big Sky, but their season got off to a rocky start when they went to Southern Utah for two games and lost both of them, both by a single point (64-63/75-74).

Several conferences have scheduled like that this season, to reduce travel; a team goes to half the schools for 2-game series, and the other half of the teams come to their gym for 2-game series.

4) When 24-point underdog Rice won 20-0 at Marshall Saturday, it was the 3rd-biggest upset this season, and also the first time since 1982 that Marshall was shut out at home.

3) San Jose State?s football team is 5-0 this season, first time Spartans are 5-0 since 1939.

2) Unusual career change: Cubs TV guy Len Kasper, who worked for the Cubs for 16 years, quit his post to become the new radio voice of the crosstown White Sox.

Seems like an odd move, but apparently Kasper preferred to be a radio voice. Very curious who the Cubs name to take his place; I watch lot of Cubs games in the summer.

1) RIP to Dick Allen, the slugger for Phillies/White Sox who hit 351 home runs and was AL MVP in 1972. He made seven All-Star Games, but passed away this week at age 78.

Dick Allen played for the A?s in 1977, his last year in the majors; a 1960 graduate of Wampum HS in Pennsylvania, Allen wore uniform #60 that year, with WAMPUM where his name was supposed to be. Allen was an excellent hitter and a bit of a character. RIP sir.

Cardinals, Rams are NFL teams that used to call St Louis home.

Monday?s quiz
Mike Holmgren was the Seahawks? coach the first time they played in a Super Bowl.

******************************

Wednesday?s Den: Mid-week musings??.

13) Baltimore 34, Cowboys 17
? Cowboys lost six of their last seven games.
? Last ten games, Dallas is minus-14 in turnovers.
? Cowboys are 2-10 ATS this year; their three wins by total of 7 points.
? Cowboys are 0-3 on natural grass, losing by combined score of 82-29.
? Dallas is 5-9-1 ATS in last 15 games as a road underdog, 1-4 TY.

? Baltimore ran ball for 294 yards (7.9 yards/carry)
? Lamar Jackson threw for only 107 yards, ran for 94 more.
? When Troy Aikman questions the effort of Dallas? defense, you know it
was bad.
? Ravens allowed 17 or fewer points in six of seven wins, 26.8 ppg in losses.

12) Michigan-Ohio State football game was cancelled, supposedly because there is lot of COVID in the Michigan football program. If Ohio State doesn?t come up with another game this week, they can?t play in the Big 14 title game- you have to play six games to be eligible.

In other news, NC State cancelled their basketball game with Michigan, but the Wolverines quickly added Toledo to replace the Wolfpack. Guess Michigan?s basketball team is healthier than the football team, or Michigan just didn?t want to lose to Ohio State by 40 on national TV.

11) Kansas 73, Creighton 72:
? Down 73-70, kid on Creighton got fouled shooting a 3, but missed third foul shot.
? Kansas made 10-22 on arc; they?ve won five games in a row.
? Jayhawks have wins over Kentucky/Creighton since losing to Gonzaga.

10) Illinois 83, Duke 68:
? Illinois shot 58% from floor, Duke 40.3%.
? Big 14 leads 6-1 in their challenge with the ACC.
? Next Wednesday, Duke finally plays a road game, at Notre Dame.

9) Miami 58, Purdue 54:
? Purdue led this game 32-14 at halftime; Miami looked TERRIBLE.
? Miami held the Boilers to 22 points in second half.
? Teams combined to make 5-42 3-point shots. Oy.

8) Philadelphia Eagles made a QB switch; rookie Jalen Hurts will start for Philly Sunday when they visit the Saints in the Superdome. It will be Hurts? first NFL start.

7) Buffalo Bills? coach Sean McDermott came to Buffalo after being an assistant for the Carolina Panthers from 2011-16; Bills now have ten former Panthers on their roster.

6) Baseball signings:
? Royals signed 1B Carlos Santana for two years, $17M
? White Sox signed OF Adam Eaton for one year, $7M

5) White Sox also acquired P Lance Lynn from Texas, for prospect Dane Dunning and a younger minor leaguer. Lynn was 6-3, 3.32 in 13 starts for Texas LY.

4) College football trend: Last 14 Army-Navy games stayed under the total.

3) 49ers are 22-8 in Jimmy Garoppolo?s last 30 starts; they?re 5-14 in last 19 games he missed.

2) If we?re going to discuss all-time QB rankings, it has to be said that its a hell of a lot easier to play quarterback now than it was 20-30, 40 years ago. All the rules now favor the offense; if you hit a QB hard now, you?re probably getting a penalty, even if its a legal hit.

Back in the day, guys got pummeled and no one said a word; I remember Terry Bradshaw getting body-slammed by Joe (Turkey) Jones in Cleveland- lot of violent hits back then, which resulted in careers being a lot shorter.

1) NBA preseason games start Friday; apparently ESPN will be showing some of these games. Sacramento-Portland is on the docket for Friday night.

Thursday?s 6-pack
Odds to win the Stanley Cup this season:

6-1? Colorado, Vegas
7-1? Tampa Bay
12-1? Boston
16-1? Philadelphia, Toronto, Washington
20-1? Pittsburgh, St Louis

Americans who have died from COVID-19: 287,985
PLEASE wear a mask when you go out.

Quote of the Day
?At the start of my career, I heard that for seven years: You have 24 hours to get over it. I think the only time I?ve ever been involved in a loss like this was to end a playoff game, so I could be pissed as long as I wanted to because nobody cares.?
Jets? coach Adam Gase

Thursday?s quiz
Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton used to coach which NBA team?

Wednesday?s quiz
Bill Belichick was the last coach of the Cleveland Browns, before they moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens; he was 36-44 coaching Cleveland.

Tuesday?s quiz

Cardinals, Rams are NFL teams that used to call St Louis home.

************************************************

Thursday?s Den: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) When voters choose NFL Coach of the Year this season, it?ll be a tough choice:
? Kevin Stefanski has the Browns at 9-3; Cleveland last made the playoffs in 2002.
? Brian Flores has Miami at 8-4; Dolphins have been in playoffs once since 2008.
? Mike Tomlin has Pittsburgh at 11-1 after going 17-14-1 the last two years.
? Ron Rivera has Washington at 5-7 but they?ve won three in a row and are tied for first in the NFC East. Not only that, but Rivera hasn?t missed a game while undergoing cancer treatment this season- tough guy. He won?t win the award, but he deserves recognition for his courage.

12) Ben Roethlisberger threw 51-53 passes in his last two games; it is the first time in his career that Big Ben threw 50+ passes in consecutive games.

11) When the Giants upset Seattle Sunday, it was the first NFL win for backup QB Colt McCoy since 2014, when his Redskins won 20-17 in Dallas.

McCoy has started 29 games in his 10-year NFL career; backup QB?s make good bank, even if you go six years between wins.

10) Defending national champ LSU is 3-5 this season, not a great year; takes lot of onions for them to self-impose a one-year bowl ban for this season on Wednesday, right before the end of the season. Who the hell would want them in a bowl game this season?

There is an NCAA investigation going on into alleged rules violations at LSU; when a school slaps itself with a bowl ban, they?re trying to get a slap on the wrist from the NCAA.

9) Then there is the Big 14, which put in rules before this season about having to play six regular season games in order to play in the conference title game. Ohio State has only played in five regular season games, but the league wants the Buckeyes to play on national TV in the conference title game, so they waived the rule Wednesday and Ohio State is in. Go figure.

8) Memphis Tigers? basketball team is off to a 4-2 start; weird thing is, Temple is in their league, the AAC? the Owls haven?t played a game yet- their first game appears to be December 22.

Similar thing in the Atlantic 14, where Rhode Island is 3-3; three of their conference rivals, UMass, Fordham and St Bonaventure haven?t played a game yet.

7) Iowa 93, North Carolina 80? Hawkeyes hit 17-40 on the arc Tuesday night, jumping out to a 25-9 lead. Tar Heels got within a point at 66-65 with 9:52 left, but Iowa pulled away at the end.

Connor McCaffery is a junior guard for Iowa; he is also the coach?s son. He played 17:00 in this game with two assists, no turnovers; he also didn?t take a shot. Sounds like a future coach.

6) Disappointing that major league baseball is shrinking the minor leagues by 40+ teams this season; minor league baseball is fun, and in lot of smaller towns, minor league teams provide jobs and entertainment all summer long.

MLB is cutting the number of minor league teams from 160 to 120 to save money; one of the teams that is a victim of the reduction is the Tri-City ValleyCats, who were an affiliate of the Astros for the last 18 years, playing in the NY-Penn League, which no longer exists.

ValleyCats played at Hudson Valley CC, which is just over the river from where I live, here in the Albany/Troy are of upstate New York. They averaged over 4,000 fans a game from 2008-18, but lot of independently-owned teams were ones phased out of existence.

5) Xavier 99, Oklahoma 77? Xavier made 19-32 on the arc; that doesn?t happen much; Musketeers are 7-0 already.

4) Clemson 67, Maryland 51? 4-0 Tigers led this game 44-19 at one point; they?ve beaten Purdue and Maryland, are forcing turnovers 29.7% of the time.

3) Florida State 69, Indiana 67 OT? Seminoles survived 11-21 foul shooting and wins at home in overtime. Florida State had 19 offensive rebounds.

2) Pepperdine 74, California 62? Waves made 12-26 on the arc; they only played seven guys, which is why they?ve struggled at end of games, but Pepperdine will challenge BYU for the #2 spot in the WCC, behind Gonzaga. .

1) Cincinnati 78, Furman 73? Paladins might be pretty good in Southern Conference.
