Michigan St. beats Michigan 77-70, takes over 1st in Big Ten
February 24, 2019
By The Associated Press

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Cassius Winston had 27 points and eight assists, and 10th-ranked Michigan State moved into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten with a 77-70 victory over No. 7 Michigan on Sunday.

Kenny Goins had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Xavier Tillman added 14 points for the Spartans, who snapped Michigan's 22-game winning streak at Crisler Center despite being without two of their top three scorers.

Joshua Langford is out for the season, and Nick Ward is recovering from a broken hand, but Goins and Tillman produced in Ward's absence for Michigan State.

Michigan (24-4, 13-4) led by six early in the second half, but that advantage was short-lived. Down 51-45, the Spartans (23-5, 14-3) outscored Michigan 21-7 to take control. The Wolverines shot 2 for 14 from 3-point range in the second half.

Zavier Simpson scored 19 points to lead Michigan.

XAVIER 66, NO. 17 VILLANOVA 54

CINCINNATI (AP) - Naji Marshall scored 17 points and Xavier used a big surge in the second half to rally past Villanova, leaving the Wildcats with three straight losses in Big East play for the first time since the conference was reconfigured.

The Musketeers (15-13, 7-8) won their fourth straight - matching their season high - and ended their run of lopsided losses against the Wildcats. Villanova (20-8, 11-4) had won five in a row against the Musketeers.

Phil Booth had 12 points in the first half, when the Wildcats led by as many as nine points. Their 30-27 halftime lead ended a streak of three straight halves allowing at least 40 points. Booth made only one of his eight shots in the second half and finished with 14 points.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Three pitchers in last 30 years with most IP thru age 30:
1) CC Sabathia, 2,441
2) Felix Hernandez 2,415
3) Clayton Kershaw 2,248

Current MAAC basketball standings:
11-6: Iona
10-6: Canisius, Quinnipiac, Rider, Siena
9-9: Monmouth

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend??.

13) Golfer Dustin Johnson won the WGC-Mexico Championship Sunday, the 20th PGA Tour victory of his career. Read something surprising about Johnson this weekend; he is apparently ?a blackjack savant? who likes to play five hands at a time, and instantly knows the odds of each hand as they?re dealt, which makes him like Alan in The Hangover movies. Who knew?

12) How come none of the AAF teams have white jerseys? All eight teams wear the same jerseys every week. Not sure thats a great idea.

11) Michigan State 77, Michigan 70? Spartans? win in Ann Arbor without two injured starters? Three MSU starters played 37:00+; quite an effort.

10) Cincinnati 64, UConn 60? Bearcats led 50-35 with 9:05 left, gave up a 16-0 run, then pulled the game out late, small consolation if had Cincy, -6.

9) Xavier 66, Villanova 54? Wildcats lost four straight road games for first time since 2012; they looked like a tired team in this game.

8) Rutgers 68, Minnesota 64? Horrendous loss for the sliding Gophers, who?ve lost six of their last seven games. Their #244 non-conference schedule ain?t going to help on Selection Sunday.

7) UNC-Greensboro 60, East Tennessee State 59? These teams are likely to meet again in SoCon semi-finals. This is an underrated league with four quality teams this season.

6) Siena 67, Marist 55? First-year coach Jamion Christian has the Saints at 15-14, 10-6 in a weak MAAC- they?ve won six of their last eight games, with experience team #247 that is playing 2nd-slowest tempo in country. Solid coaching job, cleaning up the mess of a program that was 8-24 last year, 4-14 in conference.

5) UCF 95, SMU 48? Golden Knights? 7-6 center Tacko Fall is fluent in four languages and is learning a fifth one. He had 23 points, 20 rebounds in this game.

4) Tucker Barnhart batted leadoff for the Reds the other day; don?t see lot of catchers batting leadoff, even if it is in spring training.

3) AAF trivia: Salt Lake City Stallions became first team in league history to win SU as an underdog when they upset the Arizona Hotshots Saturday.

2) Houston Astros have an odd spring training schedule; they play the Mets the next three Mondays, the Marlins the next three Thursdays and St Louis the next three Fridays.

1) Stat Comp of the Day:
Someone posted this on Twitter Saturday. Player A is Stephen Strasburg?s career stats. Any guesses on which Hall of Famer is Player B?

Player A: 1,229.2 IP, 94-52 W-L record, 2.91 FIP, 129 ERA+

Player B: 1,221.1 IP, 94-46 W-L record, 2.81 FIP, 122 ERA+

Player B is George Herman (Babe) Ruth, who I?m told was a pretty good hitter, too.

Big Monday Tip Sheet
David Schwab

Big Monday on ESPN gets things started with an ACC clash between Notre Dame and the No. 16 Florida Seminoles in Tallahassee. In the biggest matchup on the board, the No. 23 Kansas State Wildcats will go for the season sweep against the rival No. 12 Kansas Jayhawks at Allen Fieldhouse.

As a bonus betting preview in the Big 12, Oklahoma will be on the road against No. 19 Iowa State as a featured matchup on ESPN2.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 16 Florida State Seminoles (ESPN , 7 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds:
Florida State -12 ?, Total 138 ?

Betting Matchup

Notre Dame?s current straight-up losing streak reached three games with Saturday?s 67-59 loss to Virginia Tech as a four-point underdog at home. The Fighting Irish are now 2-9 SU in their last 11 games with a 4-7 record against the spread. The total stayed UNDER 133 points in Saturday?s loss and it has stayed UNDER in nine of their last 12 contests. Notre Dame is averaging 70.3 points per game, but that number has dropped to 59.4 points over its last five outings.

Saturday?s 77-59 loss to North Carolina as a seven-point road underdog snapped Florida State?s SU eight-game winning streak and it was the first time it failed to cover in its last six games. The total stayed UNDER the 160 ?-point closing line in that loss after going OVER or ending as a PUSH in seven of the Seminoles? last nine games. They are now 9-5 SU in ACC play as part of an overall record of 21-6. Florida State is averaging 76.5 PPG against a points-allowed average of 67.9.

Betting Trends

-- The Fighting Irish have gone 9-4 ATS in their last 13 road games and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games played on the road.

-- The Seminoles are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games against a team with a SU losing record. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in nine of their last 11 games at home.

-- Notre Dame as covered the closing number in the last four meetings and the total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in all four of those games.

No. 23 Kansas State Wildcats at No. 12 Kansas Jayhawks (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds:
Kansas -5, Total 133

Betting Matchup

Kansas State has won six of its last seven games both SU and ATS including a 74-67 victory against Kansas on Feb. 5 as a three-point home favorite. With Saturday?s 85-46 romp against Oklahoma State as 9 ?-point favorites at home on a closing line of 123 points, the total has gone OVER in six of the Wildcats? last seven outings. They are 11-3 SU in Big 12 play with a two game lead over the Jayhawks at the top of the standings. Senior guard Barry Brown Jr. leads the team in scoring with 15.7 PPG and Kansas State is ranked fourth in the nation in points allowed (59.3).

The Jayhawks fell to 9-5 SU in conference play with Saturday?s lopsided 91-62 road loss to Texas Tech as 4 ?-point underdogs. The total went OVER 134 points in that loss and it has gone OVER in five of their last six games. Kansas is 20-7 SU overall with a losing 12-15 record ATS. It is 7-8 ATS on its home court this season. Junior forward Dedric Lawson is putting up a team-high 19.0 PPG, but he has failed to reach that scoring average in four of his last five starts.

Betting Trends

-- The Wildcats are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU win with the total staying UNDER in six of their last eight Monday games.

-- The Jayhawks have failed to cover in six of their last eight games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in 21 of their last 28 home games.

-- The home team has posted a 18-7-2 record ATS over the last 27 meetings and the total has gone OVER in three of the last four meetings at Kansas.

Oklahoma Sooners at No. 19 Iowa State Cyclones (ESPN2, 8 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds:
Iowa State -9 ?, Total 143 ?

Betting Matchup

The Sooners are coming off back-to-back SU victories against TCU as road underdogs and Texas as favorites at home. They failed to cover the four points in Saturday?s tight 69-67 win against the Longhorns with the total going OVER 130 ? points. Oklahoma is 5-9 SU in conference play with a spotty 2-4-1 record ATS in its last seven games. It is 6-1-3 ATS on the road this season. Christian James posted 19 points in Saturday?s win and the senior guard continues to lead the Sooners in scoring with 15.5 PPG.

Iowa State?s national ranking could be in jeopardy with losses to Baylor at home and TCU on the road closing as a favorite in each game. The Cyclones are 1-3 both SU and ATS in their last four games coming off Saturday?s 75-72 loss to TCU as slight 1 ?-point favorite. The total stayed UNDER 151 points in that game after going OVER in their previous four outings. Iowa State has been able to average 78.3 PPG this season with senior guard Marial Shayok leading the way with 18.5 PPG. He was held to just four points his last time out while going 2-for-5 from the floor.

Betting Trends

-- The Sooners have gone 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games coming off a SU win with the total staying UNDER in five of their last seven road games.

-- The Cyclones are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games following a SU loss and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last 10 games coming off a loss SU.

-- Iowa State won the first meeting 75-74, but Oklahoma covered as a three-point home underdog. The Cyclones still have a 8-2 edge ATS over the last 10 meetings with the total staying UNDER in five of their last six home games against Oklahoma.

Top 25 Betting Recap
Joe Williams

Each week until March Madness we'll take a look at how the Top 25 fared from college basketball, but straight up and against the number, while also taking a look at their upcoming schedule.

It's going to be a topsy-turvy week in the Top 25. We had Shoe-gate in Durham, with Zion Williamson's Nike blowing out and the likely first-round pick in the NBA going down with an injury. As such, Duke (24-3 SU, 16-11 ATS) was routed at home by North Carolina (22-5 SU, 17-8-2 ATS) in the first installment in 'Battle of the Blues' at Cameron Indoor Stadium. For those Blue Devils fans in attendance, it wasn't $2,500-4,000 well spent, eh? Carolina has won and covered three in a row since their loss to Virginia (24-2 SU, 19-7 ATS) on Feb. 11. The 'under' has cashed in four straight for the Tar Heels, too.

Tennessee (24-3 SU, 13-12-1 ATS) still has just three losses overall on the season, but they have suffered two losses in the past three. LSU (22-5 SU, 15-11-1 ATS) got them 82-80 in overtime on Baton Rouge on Saturday, as it was party time at The Chimes after the game. The Volunteers failed to cover for a fourth consecutive game, while the 'over' is 3-1 during the same span. After playing great defense for most of the season, Tennessee has been dinged for 82 or more in two of the past three. They're allowing just 68.0 PPG on the season.

Speaking of the Tigers, if you bet their games, hopefully you have a strong heart. Three of the past six have resulted in overtime, and four of the past nine were not decided in regulation. Hopefully you like 'over' results, too, as the total has gone over in three straight for LSU, and 12 of the past 15.

It was a rough week for Nevada (25-2 SU, 16-9-1 ATS), as they lost to old nemesis San Diego State (18-9 SU, 15-11 ATS) in Southern California, scoring a season-low 57 points. Their previous low mark was 67, and they had scored 72 or more in 24 of their 27 games. They failed to cover against Fresno State (19-8 SU, 16-9-1 ATS), but they did at least scratch out a win. The 'under' has connected in four straight for the Wolf Pack. They'll have another big test at Utah State (22-6 SU, 14-13 ATS) later this week.

Kansas (20-7 SU, 12-15 ATS) hasn't been the same since going down with a season-ending wrist injury which required surgery. This team is looking more and more like a one-and-done, or possible Round of 32 team, but not much else. Texas Tech (22-5 SU, 12-14-1 ATS) emasculated the Jayhawks by a 91-62 score on Saturday, the worst conference loss under Bill Self, largest since 2006. Now, the third-place Jayhawks face Kansas State (21-6 SU, 16-11 ATS) in a key battle this week in Lawrence.

Villanova (20-8 SU, 17-11 ATS), Louisville (18-10 SU, 14-12-2 ATS) and Iowa State (19-8 SU, 14-11-2 ATS) each had 0-2 SU weeks, and are likely to take a tumble in the rankings, perhaps out of the Top 25. The Cardinals have lost four of the past five straight-up, and they have failed to cover three straight and they're 1-4 ATS over the past five. The 'under' is also 4-0 in the past four, and 7-2 in the past nine. I-State is trending in the wrong direction, too, losing three of the past four, while going 1-5 ATS across the past six. The 'over' has connected in seven of the past nine for the Cyclones.

On the outside of the Top 25 looking in, Cincinnati (23-4 SU, 12-15 ATS) scratched out two more victories, but they have failed to cover in four straight/ The 'under' is 4-1 in the past five for the Bearcats. Wofford (24-4 SU, 14-11 ATS) was technically ranked No. 27 last week, and they could climb into the Top 25 after another strong week. The Terriers have covered six of the past seven, and they're a team no one is going to want to see in the postseason.

Gonzaga reclaims No. 1 in AP Top 25; Wofford debuts at 24th
February 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Gonzaga is back atop the AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll.

The Zags moved up a spot Monday to begin a second stint at No. 1 this season, both times replacing Duke at the top. They earned 44 of 64 first-place votes.

Gonzaga (27-2) spent two weeks at No. 1 after beating the Blue Devils to win the Maui Invitational in November. Mark Few's team fell out after a December loss to Tennessee followed by another to North Carolina, but it has since won 18 straight games.

Virginia moved up a spot to No. 2 and had 15 first-place votes, while the Blue Devils fell to third after losing at home to rival North Carolina in a game that saw freshman star Zion Williamson go down with an injury to his right knee in the opening minute - complete with the image of his left foot tearing through his shoe as he fell to the floor.

The Tar Heels climbed to a season-high fifth behind Kentucky. Michigan State, Tennessee, Houston, Michigan and Marquette rounded out the top 10.

Preseason No. 1 Kansas fell to 15th, the Jayhawks' lowest ranking since January 2014.

There were three new additions to this week's poll, headlined by Wofford checking in at No. 24 for the first AP poll appearance in program history. The Terriers (24-4) are 16-0 in the Southern Conference and their only losses have come against power-conference teams UNC, Oklahoma, Kansas and Mississippi State.

Cincinnati and Washington both re-entered the poll, while Louisville, Iowa State and reigning national champion Villanova slid out.

Poison Ivy Trends
February 24, 2019
By Marc Lawrence

With the college basketball season now in full conference swing, let?s examine a handicapping theory that yields a much better return on your investment than the banks do these days.

It deals with teams playing back-to-back days without rest during the regular season. In particular, Ivy League games noted for playing back-to-back contests on Friday and Saturday nights.

What we?re looking to target on is how brain-chain teams fare the second night of these affairs no-rest affairs. Let?s take a closer look at a few of the more suitable situations.

Creaky Double Digit Chalk

According to our database, the worst role for these teams is as double-digit home favorites, where they are just 62-94-3 ATS overall heading into this year since the 1990-91 season.

Even worse, double-digit home chalk with a .687 or greater win percentage are just 23-45 ATS.

Digging deeper, if these tired .687 or greater hosts are laying doubles digits at home facing an opponent that is coming off consecutive losses they dissolve faster than an Alka Seltzer tablet in a glass of ice-cold water, going 3-22 ATS. Now that?s cold.

Fool Me Twice

Revenge serves as a major motivating tool in these no-rest Ivy League matchups, especially when we bring a visiting team in as a dog in with double-revenge incentive from a pair of losses suffered last season.

That?s confirmed by a 54-36-2 ATS mark when these wonder-boys are on the road, including 43-23-1 ATS when taking seven or more points when fueled with double-revenge incentive.

Better yet, bring these hungry revengers in off consecutive losses as 7-point or larger dogs and they make the Dean?s List, going 24-8 ATS (see Brown +12 against Princeton earlier this season).

Triskaidekaphobia Road

Our third and final theorem occurs when these non-rested Ivy Leaguers are on the Saturday night road off a loss of 13 or more points.

Dress them up as dogs (or pick) in this role and they are 79-61-3 ATS, including 41-24 ATS when taking 10 or more points.

Bring them into these same games with a win percentage of .400 or less and they ratchet up to 36-14 ATS, including 19-2 ATS when taking 17 or more points.

There you have it, the perfect calamine lotion for Ivy League teams in search of a remedy for a little extra Saturday scratch.

College Basketball Game Preview ? Kansas State at Kansas

There?s still a chance the Kansas Jayhawks can keep their string of Big 12 regular season titles intact. But the chore became a lot more difficult after Saturday?s blowout loss to Texas Tech. The road hasn?t been good to the Jayhawks and they?ll use a loss earlier this season at Kansas State as a motivator when the two meet inside Allen Fieldhouse on Monday. As poor as they?ve played on the road, the Jayhawks have made up for it at home winning 18 in a row.

The first place Wildcats can guarantee that Kansas will finish no better than them with a victory. But wins have been hard to come by in the Phog. K-State hasn?t won in Lawrence since 2006. Kansas may be ripe for a takedown, but the Wildcats will have to perform at a high level.

This college basketball game between Kansas State and Kansas will be held at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, KS at 9 p.m. ET on Monday, February 25, 2019. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN

We'll have college basketball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2019 season.

Odds Analysis

Kansas State is riding a two-game winning streak into this matchup, blasting West Virginia and Oklahoma State following a loss to Iowa State. And they have a win over KU earlier this month. That was on the Wildcats? home floor and things are drastically different when State visits its rival. The Wildcats haven?t won in Lawrence since 2006 and they are considered the ugly step-child to their in-state foe.

In order to claim a 15th consecutive Big 12 regular season title, the Jayhawks must bounce back from the worst conference loss in the Bill Self era. Kansas did nothing right in the 91-62 setback to the league?s second-best team. At least the Jayhawks get a chance to keep their streak alive on their home floor where they are 15-0 this season and have won 18 straight overall. That?s enough to make the Jayhawks a 3.5-point favorite on the opening college basketball line.

Injury Report

The loss of Udoka Azubuike to a hand injury last month and the leave of absence taken by Lagerald Vick has left the Jayhawks shorthanded. The roster has talent but is very young, and Self has had to do something he rarely does ? start four freshmen. The lineup worked initially with KU rattling off three straight wins. But the youngsters had a hard time on Saturday with none of them able to score double figures.

And the calming influence of Vick along with the presence of Azubuike left a gaping hole in the Jayhawks lineup that was exposed by the Red Raiders. Devon Dotson, the team?s second-leading active scorer, managed only seven points at Texas Tech, and Ochai Agbaji tallied just two points. They, along with Dedric Lawson, are the only double-figure scorers on the team.

Combined the Jayhawks are missing 27.5 points per game with Vick and Azubuike out of the lineup, and that kind of production is hard to replace.

Matchup To Watch

A pair of Big 12 player of the year candidates will carry their respective clubs into this tussle. Lawson has been a stud all season, but has assumed more responsibility with the losses of Azubuike and Vick. The junior hasn?t backed down and continues to produce with a young lineup around him. Lawson was the only Jayhawk to score in double figures on Saturday and he leads the conference with 19.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.

The Wildcats are more experienced with three seniors and two juniors starting. The group is led by Barry Brown, who scores a team-best 15.7 points per outing while his 2.0 steals per game aid a stingy defense that surrenders fewer than 60 points per game on average.

Lawson scored 18 points in the first meeting, but it was Brown and his defensive prowess that stole the show. The Wildcats forced 23 KU turnovers and were plus-10 in the second half to pull away for the 74-67 victory.

Free College Basketball ATS Picks

The Jayhawks are a completely different team at the Phog and State?s problems there have gotten into their head. However, with a chance to put a dagger in KU?s title hopes, the Wildcats will come out strong. And they have the best defense in the Big 12, which will make points hard to come by. This one will be close and I like the visitors to end their frustration in Lawrence. Take K-State and the points for a winner on the college basketball betting line.

CBB ATS Pick: Kansas State 73, Kansas 69

NCAA Game Preview - Notre Dame at Florida State

The Florida State Seminoles are heavily favored on Monday night, as they host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a game that can be seen on ESPN.

The Seminoles will be trying to bounce back from Saturday?s loss to North Carolina. The defeat broke an eight-game winning streak for Florida State. The Seminoles shouldn?t have any trouble getting back to their winning ways, as they host a bad Notre Dame team on Monday.

Let?s look at Notre Dame at Florida State and college basketball picks.

Notre Dame at Florida State
Date and Time: Monday, February 25, 2019, 7 p.m. ET
Location: Donald L. Tucker Center, Tallahassee, FL
College Basketball Odds at BetDSI: Florida State -12, O/U 140
Notre Dame vs. Florida State TV Coverage: ESPN

The Fighting Irish are having an awful season, as they are just 3-11 in the ACC. They are coming off a home loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday. Notre Dame simply hasn?t been able to score enough points to be competitive. They scored just 59 against Virginia Tech. The Fighting Irish are young and they do have some talented freshmen including Prentiss Hubb and Nate Laszewski, but Notre Dame is not going to win this season. Head coach Mike Brey even admitted as much after Saturday?s loss to Virginia Tech when he said the Hokies were ?Too tough. Too mentally tough. And we are not that right now.?

Notre Dame has actually been a much better bet on the road that at home this season. They are a pathetic 5-13 ATS at home, but they are 4-3 ATS on the road. The Irish have gone under in five of their seven road games. They are averaging 70.3 points per game and giving up about 69 per contest.

Florida State is coming off a 77-59 loss to North Carolina on Saturday. The Seminoles had been playing great heading into that game, but their eight-game streak came to an end, as they shot just 30.5 percent from the field. It was so bad that reserve guard David Nichols led FSU with 16 points. Leading scorer Mfiondu Kabengele had just eight points, as he was limited to 19 minutes because of foul trouble. The starting five for FSU was just 9-for-33 in the game.

Florida State is just 6-7 ATS at home this season, with seven games going over, four going under the total, with two pushes. They are averaging 76.5 points per game and giving up just over 67 per contest.

Key Stats

The Fighting Irish are 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings in this series. The Fighting Irish are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 road games. The Fighting Irish are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 Monday games. The Seminoles are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games. The Seminoles are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 Monday games.

Looking at the total, the Under is 4-1 in the Fighting Irish?s last 5 road games. The Over is 8-2-1 in the Seminoles last 11 home games. The Over is 3-0-1 in the last 4 meetings.

Notre Dame vs. Florida State Free Picks

There is not much doubt as to which team is going to win this game on Monday. The Fighting Irish have one road win this season and that was at Boston College. The question is who is going to cover the spread. You should know by now that I hate laying big points regardless of the sport. I will do it on rare occasions if the situation is right, but I don?t know that is the case on Monday.

The Seminoles are coming off an emotional game against North Carolina and now they face a bad Notre Dame team. I just can?t see them being up for this contest. I know the Fighting Irish are having a tough season and I don?t expect them to win this game, but I think they can stay under the big number. I will take the big points with Notre Dame at BetDSI.

Notre Dame vs. Florida State ATS Pick: Notre Dame +12
Notre Dame vs. Florida State Score Prediction: Florida State 74, Notre Dame 66

Lawson, No. 15 KU top No. 16 K-State 64-49
February 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Dedric Lawson had 18 points and 14 rebounds to cement his front-runner status for Big 12 player of the year, and No. 15 Kansas pounded No. 16 Kansas State 64-49 on Monday night to keep alive its hopes of a 15th consecutive conference championship.

Devon Dotson added 16 points and fellow freshman Quentin Grimes had 12 for the Jayhawks (21-7, 10-5), who moved within a game of the league-leading Wildcats (21-7, 11-4) with three to play.

Texas Tech, which roughed up the Jayhawks on Saturday, is a half-game back in second place.

The Wildcats shot just 32 percent from the field, struggled with turnovers at key junctures and never seemed as comfortable as they were at Bramlage Coliseum, where they roared past the Jayhawks nearly three weeks ago to seize control of the conference race.

Kamau Stokes led the Wildcats with 12 points, but nobody on coach Bruce Weber's team got into much of a rhythm.

NO. 18 FLORIDA STATE 68, NOTRE DAME 61

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Freshman Devin Vassell scored 13 points, sparking Florida State's second-half charge with a dunk and a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions, and the Seminoles held off Notre Dame.

Trent Forrest made 4 of 6 six free-throw attempts in the final minute to help the Seminoles (22-6, 10-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) hang on.

D.J. Harvey scored 18 points and Prentiss Hubb had 17 for Notre Dame (13-15, 3-12), which has dropped four straight games.

The Fighting Irish went scoreless for nearly five minutes late in the game and made just one of their final 10 field-goal attempts.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

From Jason on Twitter: NFL leaders in dead money, from 2016-2019:

1. Bills- $125M

2. Browns- $111M

3. Saints- $102M

4. 49ers- $82M

5. Giants- $80M

6. Jets- $71M

Dead money is cap money that is left over after a contract is terminated/voided.

Quote of the Day
?I don?t think there?s negotiation here. As players, it just shouldn?t be in the game. Having a pitch clock, if you have ball-strike implications, that?s messing with the fabric of the game. There?s no clock in baseball, and there?s no clock in baseball for a reason.?
Max Scherzer

Tuesday?s quiz

What team did Max Scherzer break into the major leagues with?

Monday?s quiz
Of the eight head coaches in the AAF, five have also been NFL head coaches.

Sunday?s quiz
Three current NBA head coaches have also been the head coach of a D-I college team; Billy Donovan, Quin Snyder and Brad Stevens

*****************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) John S. Middleton owns 48% of the Philadelphia Phillies; he went to college at Amherst and then Harvard Business School, so he is a very smart human.

His family owned a retail tobacco shop in Philadelphia that evolved into a manufacturer and marketer of pipe tobacco and cigars; Middleton wound up selling the company for $2.9B, thats billion, with a B.

12) Middleton flew to Las Vegas this past weekend to try and help recruit Bryce Harper to play for the Phillies. Harper still hasn?t decided; spring training has been going on for a week.

If I?m Mr Middleton, I tell Harper and his scumweasel agent; enough already. You have one more hour to decide, either sign with us or we move on. Begging someone to take $300M isn?t cool. Sign on the dotted line or we?ll go in a different direction.

Regular season starts in 30 days; time to make a decision.

11) A 71-year old man in California was convicted of a double murder 40 years ago, but it turns out the guy didn?t do it, so he was released from prison in 2017, and was recently awarded $21M in a settlement with the city of Simi Valley.

What do you if you?ve been in jail for the last 40 years and all of a sudden you?re not only free, but rich as hell? Would make an interesting movie.

10) For 11 months out of 12, weekday television completely sucks; ESPN has hired so many nitwit talking heads it is difficult to keep them all straight. There is a lot of political talk on TV but that pretty much makes me want to puke. So during the day, it is either movies or music.

Except for the next month, when preseason baseball games are on TV every day, and that is a great thing. Who cares that the games don?t matter? It is live baseball; nothing wrong with that.

9) Saw Tim Tebow play baseball for first time over the weekend; he looked decent as a hitter. a lefty, he lined out to left one time, and then he hit a pretty good drive to left-center, but the CF for Houston made a great diving catch, saving a double or a triple. Sounds like he will start this season at AAA Syracuse; will be interesting to follow.

8) Giants-Cubs spring training game this weekend drew 9,277 fans in Scottsdale; spring training has become very popular. One of these years I may have to venture out to the desert to see some baseball. I?m guessing A?s spring training games don?t draw 9,000+.

7) This season is the Cincinnati Reds? 150th anniversary; to celebrate, the Reds will wear fifteen different throwback uniforms. Thats right, 15 different sets of uniforms. Hopefully they?re giving their equipment guys a bonus for keeping all of that straight.

6) Looking ahead to conference tournament play in a couple weeks; Iona is 16-2 in its last 18 MAAC tournament games. Gonzaga has won its last 17 WCC tournament games; last time the Zags didn?t win the WCC tournament was in 2012, when they lost to Saint Mary?s.

5) Nets 101, Spurs 85? San Antonio has now lost seven of its last eight games; last time they missed the playoffs was 1996-97, the season Gregg Popovich replaced Bob Hill as head coach. Right now, San Antonio is 33-29, but seem headed in the wrong direction- if the season ended today, they?d be the #8 seed in the West.

4) It was so windy in beautiful upstate New York Monday, I fully expected to see the Wicked Witch of the West riding past my house on her bicycle, with a bunch of monkeys flying above (obscure movie reference? the Wizard of Oz). Very cold, but mercifully, no damage around my house and even better, no snow.

3) In the AAF, there are no kickoffs; if you want to ?onside kick?, you have a 4th-and-12 on your own 28-yard line, and the game progresses from there. Happened for the first time this past week, and the team converted the first down, so they kept the ball.

2) Stumbled across one of my favorite movies this weekend; Searching for Bobby Fischer, a movie about a little kid who is a chess prodigy, starring Joe Mantegna as the kid?s father and Ben Kingsley/Lawrence Fishburne as the kid?s chess mentors.

If you ever get a chance to see this movie, it is worth your time.

1) Thanks to WeTV for running a Law and Order marathon every Sunday night; it came in especially handy after the Super Bowl, when I didn?t exactly feel like watching SportsCenter that night. One of the best TV shows ever made, Law and Order was on for 20 years; 456 episodes.

Hot & Not Report
February 25, 2019
By YouWager.eu

Who's Hot and Who's Not

Week of February 25th

It's the last week of February and that means the craziness of March is soon to be upon us. After going with a lighter side of things in terms of streaky situations last week ? which by the way, UCLA came back from a 16-point halftime deficit with Bill Walton in the house ? this week it's all about college basketball teams that are hoping to either keep or get rid of the ?0? in either the W/L column in conference play.

The last week of February means that regular season conference crowns are essentially on the line, and for some, it's the last 10+ days or so of them trying to break through and get that first conference win of the year. Good teams are going to be money makers and bad ones will struggle ATS, so it's not too shocking to see these upcoming numbers, but let's just hope that a few of the six teams listed in the second half of this piece can find a way to get a conference win this year. Chances are they'll be catching points if they do and maybe we can pick them off....

Who's Hot

Undefeated teams in Conference Play ? Wofford, Gonzaga ? Combined 33-21 ATS overall

Gonzaga begins the week back atop the throne of the CBB rankings, and for them it's all about how far they go in the tournament. The Bulldogs are beating teams by 25+ on any given night in the WCC, as at 14-0 SU in WCC play, it's hard to see the Zags lose a game before the NCAA Tournament.

Now, for Bulldogs fans, seeing a loss may not be the worst thing in the world from your team, as it could re-focus them and remind them that things will get a lot tougher in the NCAA Tournament compared to WCC play. Gonzaga finishes the year with two road games this week (@ Pacific, and @ St Mary's) and it's tough to see Gonzaga at their best in these spots.

Gonzaga beat each team by at least 30 earlier in the year, and the large spreads have started to catch up with Gonzaga. They may be 19-10 ATS on the year, but they are 1-3 ATS in their last four coming into the week, as these numbers were just a little too large. Can't take anything away from Gonzaga's great ATS record already this year, and #1 fits for now, but motivation is going to be the big question for this team as this week rolls into next week, and the numbers may simply be to large to consider laying.

Wofford is the program that could provide some intrigue to Selection Sunday should they not win the Southern Tournament and earn the auto-bid, as at-large schools from this type of conference don't get viewed favorably. This is a team that's been a great bet of late ? 6-1 ATS last seven - as they've been rolling in conference play (16-0 SU) for the entire year.

But just like Gonzaga, Wofford finds itself closing out the year with two road games this week (@ Chattanooga, @ Samford), and while those games may not look tough on paper, the numbers could be too large when motivation is a bigger issue here. Gonzaga, they'll be in the NCAA without a conference tournament title, Wofford, they may not. This team has already got to have it's sights set at peaking next week, and this strong ATS run might flip sooner then you think.

Who's Not

Winless teams in Conference Play ? California, Chicago State, Portland, Vanderbilt, San Jose State, Tulane ? Combined 61-95 ATS overall

When you're a combined 0-84 SU in conference games respectively as the six teams that I've listed off are, to be 30 games below the .500 mark on the spread in total should be expected. But this may be another run I expect to see flip around over the coming weeks, as motivation shouldn't be an issue most nights with these guys wanting to go all out in games they may have a shot. Going winless in conference play is downright embarrassing, and fading these teams if you believe they've already packed it in for the year is a solid way to go. But based on a few upcoming situations for a couple of these teams, I think some great underdog ML and ATS bets could be in store.

California

For as much parity as there is in the Pac-12 this year, to have the Golden Bears at 0-15 SU is a little surprising. Cal has just not been able to put two halves together since conference play began, as they've had a couple blown ones at home vs Stanford and UCLA that could have had them off this list already. At 9-18 ATS, California's not even really covering spreads in conference play either (5-10 ATS), as this team sees their chances to win outright come few and far between.

But this weekend, Cal hosts Washington State in what may be their best chance left to win a Pac-12 game this year, as all five wins in their 5-22 SU record overall have come at home. Washington State has been playing much better in recent weeks, so the are likely to get a bit more respect on the line than their full season of numbers maybe warrants, and Cal would love to flip the script after no-showing against the Cougars (82-59) in the first meeting.

San Jose State

San Jose State has been quite bad all year, and at 3-23 SU you likely wouldn't expect anything different. It's the 0-14 SU record in conference play that got them on this list though, and like California, the Spartans may only have one legit crack at ending the winless conference season with an upcoming home game.

At 10-14-1 ATS, the Spartans have never really threatened to win a Mountain West game this year. They enter this week having been a double-digit dog in seven straight games (2-4-1 ATS), and while that streak may or may not end when they host New Mexico on Tuesday, the only other time we won't see +10 or more attached to the Spartans name this year is when they host Wyoming early next week.

Wyoming is just a spot ahead of San Jose State in the standings, and they aren't a very good basketball team either. But it was the Spartans who basically no-showed the 2nd half of that first meeting, losing by 13 in a game where they shot 33% from the floor and Wyoming connected on 56%. Get those numbers back to relative averages for both, and the home court could be enough to push San Jose State over the hump. Wyoming's winless on the road for the entire year (0-10 SU), and they'll have to be laying some chalk here I suspect.

Duke's Williamson 'out' for Tuesday
February 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) Duke freshman Zion Williamson will miss a second straight game with a mild right knee sprain he suffered last week.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski said Monday that the national player of the year candidate won't play Tuesday night when the third-ranked Blue Devils visit No. 20 Virginia Tech.

Williamson was hurt in the opening minute of an 88-72 loss to North Carolina. He sprained his knee when he planted his foot while dribbling and his left shoe tore apart.

Williamson ranks second in the league in scoring at 21.6 points per game. He also ranks among the league leaders in rebounding, shooting percentage and steals.
