Friday's Tip Sheet
January 18, 2018

Game of the Night: Wizards at Pistons ? 8:05 PM EST

Both these squads are sitting in the top eight of the Eastern Conference heading into Friday?s action. However, each team is looking to bust out of a funk as Washington has lost two straight, while Detroit is looking to snap a three-game skid.

The Wizards (25-20 SU, 19-26 ATS) were smoked in the first half at Charlotte on Wednesday by allowing 77 points in a 133-109 setback to the Hornets. Washington has been horrific against the number recently by failing to cover in seven consecutive games, while Scott Brooks? team owns a 1-6 ATS mark in its last seven road contests.

The Pistons (22-21 SU, 24-17-2 ATS) are sitting slightly above the 76ers for the final playoff spot in the East, but Detroit has slipped to a 2-6 record in January. The latest setback came in Wednesday?s 96-91 loss at Toronto, but the Pistons managed a cover as 8 ?-point underdogs. Detroit has struggled as a home favorite of late by covering in only one of its last five opportunities when laying points at Little Caesars Arena.

Washington has owned Detroit over the years by winning eight of the past 10 meetings since February 2015, including a pair of victories at Capital One Arena this season. The Wizards have split the last four visits to Detroit, as three of those matchups were decided by four points or less.

30 for 30

Both the Spurs and Raptors enter Friday?s contest at Air Canada Center with 30 wins apiece. Toronto (30-13 SU, 24-19 ATS) improved to 16-3 at home after holding off Detroit on Wednesday, halting a two-game skid. The Raptors couldn?t cash tickets as an 8 ?-point favorite, as Dwane Casey?s team fell to 0-4 ATS the last four opportunities when laying points. However, Toronto?s defense has stepped up at home of late by limiting seven of its past nine opponents to less than 100 points at the ACC.

San Antonio (30-16 SU, 24-20-2 ATS) has alternated wins and losses in each of its past 11 games, coming off a 100-95 road triumph at Brooklyn on Wednesday to barely cash as 4 ?-point favorites. The Spurs embark on a long stretch without last season?s MVP candidate Kawhi Leonard, who remains sidelined with a quad injury. San Antonio has cashed the UNDER in four consecutive games, while looking to beat Toronto for the fifth straight time since April 2016.

Scratching Away

It?s a lost season for the Grizzlies (15-28 SU, 17-24-2 ATS), who have been without point guard Mike Conley, Jr. since November 13. However, Memphis has played better recently by winning three of its past four and posting a 7-2 ATS record the last nine games. The Grizzlies are fresh off a pair of home victories over the Lakers and Knicks, while knocking off New York on Wednesday, 105-99 without center Marc Gasol, who sat due to an illness.

Memphis hosts Sacramento (13-31 SU, 17-24-3 ATS), who begins a six-game road swing following Wednesday?s 15-point home loss to Utah. The Kings are sliding fast by dropping six consecutive contests, but Sacramento has compiled a 6-5 ATS record in its last 11 away games, including a cover as 12-point underdogs in a 95-88 loss at Oklahoma City on Monday. Memphis ripped Sacramento in their previous matchup at Golden 1 Center on New Year?s Eve, 114-96, while the Grizzlies are 4-1 SU/ATS the last five home meetings with the Kings.

Salty Taste

The Jazz (18-26 SU, 22-22 ATS) are coming off only their fifth road victory of the season in Wednesday?s 120-115 win at Sacramento as four-point favorites. Utah hit the 120-point mark for the first time since scoring 126 points against the Clippers on November 30, while improving to 5-15 the last 20 games. The Jazz have dropped three straight games in the role of a home favorite, while getting limited to 98 points or less in each of those defeats.

The Knicks (20-25 SU, 23-22 ATS) travel to Salt Lake City trying to improve on a dreadful 5-16 record away from Madison Square Garden. New York won its first matchup with Utah in mid-November, 106-101, but has dropped its last three visits to Vivint Smart Home Arena since 2015. The Knicks are riding a five-game OVER streak, including cashing the OVER in five of the past six road contests.

Home Disadvantage

Since knocking off Orlando and Minnesota to begin 2018, the Nets (16-29 SU, 27-18 ATS) have lost five straight games at Barclays Center. Brooklyn has covered four consecutive home contests earlier this month, but have failed to cash in recent losses to Detroit, New York, and San Antonio. The Nets host the Heat before hitting the road for five games starting Sunday in Detroit. Brooklyn ripped Miami in its past matchup at American Airlines Arena in late December, 111-87 as six-point ?dogs, but have lost eight straight home meetings with the Heat since 2014.

The Heat (26-28 SU, 20-22-2 ATS) remain atop the Southeast division following Wednesday?s 106-101 triumph at Milwaukee as 4 ?-point underdogs. Miami has won eight of its past nine games, while posting an impressive 5-1 SU/ATS last six road contests, including victories at Toronto and Boston. The Heat are in the midst of a five-game away swing, as Erik Spoelstra?s club has eclipsed the OVER in four of the past five contests away from South Florida.

Digging for Gold

The Nuggets (23-22 SU, 20-23-2 ATS) have slumped to a 2-5 record the last seven games, coming off Wednesday?s 109-104 setback to the Clippers. Denver failed to cash as 4 ?-point underdogs, while blowing a double-digit lead as the Nuggets dropped to 2-7 with no rest. The Nuggets return to the Pepsi Center to host the Suns, as Denver has won the past seven matchups with Phoenix, including a 134-111 home win on January 3.

Phoenix (16-29 SU, 21-22-2 ATS) lost its third consecutive game on Tuesday at Portland, 118-111, but the Suns cashed as 11-point underdogs thanks to outscoring the Blazers, 39-26 in the fourth quarter. The Suns are 0-7 ATS in the last seven meetings with the Nuggets, while the past five matchups have eclipsed the OVER.

Setting the Pace

Indiana (24-20 SU, 25-19 ATS) continues its four-game road swing in Los Angeles to face the Lakers for the first time this season. The Pacers head to Staples Center with no rest following Thursday?s 14-point setback at Portland, as Nate McMillan?s squad has lost six of nine games in the second of a back-to-back set. Much of Indiana?s success can be attributed to having leading scorer Victor Oladipo in the lineup, as the Pacers have won five of their last seven games since the guard returned following a bout with knee soreness.

The Lakers (15-29 SU, 21-23 ATS) will likely be without guard Lonzo Ball once again, who missed Wednesday?s loss at Oklahoma City with a knee sprain. Los Angeles fell to 0-8 this season without the rookie from UCLA, while fellow backcourt mate Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is out with an Achilles strain. The Lakers had won four straight prior to consecutive losses to the Grizzlies and Thunder, but L.A. is riding a three-game winning streak at Staples Center.

WIZARDS 122, PISTONS 112

DETROIT (AP) - Bradley Beal and Kelly Oubre Jr. had 26 points apiece, and Washington scored 45 in the third quarter before holding off Detroit.

The Pistons cut a 20-point second-half deficit to four in the fourth quarter, but John Wall made a big 3-pointer to put the Wizards up 107-100. Oubre added a four-point play a few possessions later to push Washington's lead to nine.

Hassan Whiteside had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and Goran Dragic scored 17 for the Heat.

LeVert made an acrobatic layup to give the Nets a 95-91 lead with 57.8 seconds remaining and then a step-back jumper to ice the game at 97-91.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Dillon Brooks scored a career-best 22 points, Ben McLemore had a season-high 21 and Memphis beat skidding Sacramento for its third consecutive win.

The game marked Zach Randolph's first return to Memphis since spending eight years as a key figure in the Grizzlies' success. The power forward received a standing ovation when he was introduced with the starting lineups. The team showed a tribute video between the first and second quarters.

Randolph finished with four points and six rebounds for the Kings, who have lost seven straight.

Tyreke Evans added 14 points for Memphis. De'Aaron Fox led the Kings with 16 points and six assists.

SUNS 108, NUGGETS 100

Healthier Rockets host Warriors in anticipated matchup
January 20, 2018

HOUSTON -- It didn't require much effort to disregard the rust affecting Houston Rockets guard James Harden on Thursday night to instead take inventory of the potency he provided in lockstep with his fellow backcourt mates Chris Paul and Eric Gordon.

While throttling the Minnesota Timberwolves 116-98, Harden, Paul and Gordon showcased to the league what has been missing in Houston for the better part of the past month. The Rockets (31-12), inundated by injuries throughout the first half of this season, were almost whole against the Timberwolves at Toyota Center, and the glimpse of their productivity was telling.

Houston will remain without Trevor Ariza and Gerald Green, both suspended for their roles in a postgame dustup with the Clippers on Monday, when it hosts the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night. But for the first time since Dec. 13, injuries won't undermine the Rockets' plans.

"That's one of the things that we were all excited about, coaching staff included, (Wednesday) in practice. We just all looked so good," Harden said following his return from a seven-game hiatus. "The ball was moving, defensively we were communicating. You've got 10, 11 guys that can produce at any moment. Once we get those guys back you should see a difference."

Harden failed to score at least 20 points for the first time, posting 10 points on 3-of-15 shooting and seven assists in 25 minutes. But Gordon produced 30 points off the bench while Paul delivered another sterling all-around effort with 19 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

The last time the Rockets had their rotation intact, they beat the Charlotte Hornets on Dec. 13 for their 11th consecutive win. They improved to 9-8 since on Thursday, having survived games without Harden, Paul, and Luc Mbah a Moute. With renewed health comes a renewed focus.

"As we're getting healthy, we've got to get back to the things that we need to do best," Gordon said. "That's when we're playing good team ball offensively and we're playing really good team defense. When we're doing both early in the game, you can almost determine that we're going to have a great outcome."

The Warriors (37-9) test the Rockets like no other team in the league, and their 14-game road winning streak will offer a stiff challenge to a team looking to put all their pieces back together.

Golden State has won 24 of 28 games since its last road loss, a 108-91 setback at Oklahoma City on Nov. 22. And while the Warriors have dealt with their share of maladies, from Stephen Curry to Draymond Green to Andre Iguodala to rookie Jordan Bell, they're better equipped to sidestep roster attrition due in large part to their roster stability. And, of course, their talent.

With a victory, Golden State would set a franchise record for consecutive road victories and would complete its five-game road trip unblemished. Through a scheduling quirk, the Warriors spent four nights in Chicago, where they defeated the Bulls 119-112 on Wednesday, before traveling to Houston, site of the Warriors' 124-114 victory on Jan. 4.

"It's been a phenomenal road trip," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "And now we've got a chance to have ... a leisurely evening in Houston and hopefully finish the trip off right."

The teams have split their previous two meetings this season. The winner on Saturday will claim the season series tiebreaker.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Longshots to win The Masters in April:

110-1? JB Holmes

135-1? Jason Dufner

150-1? Ian Poulter

165-1? Ollie Schneiderjans

200-1? Patton Kizzire

225-1? Charles Howell III

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) There is too much anger and bad news in the world, so I give you this:

Former NFL running back Warrick Dunn?s mom was a policewoman in Baton Rouge; she was killed by a gunman when Dunn was 18. Dunn went on to star at Florida State, and then played for 12 years in the NFL.

To honor his late mother, Dunn started a foundation that built homes with Habitat for Humanity for single-parent families. He is still doing that.

Last month, Dunn?s foundation gave away their 158th and 159th homes, one in Detroit, one in Atlanta. You don?t think this makes a difference?

12) In 2006, Dunn?s foundation built a home in Gainesville, Ga; the family had an 11-year old boy who you may have heard of.

Deshaun Watson, now QB for the Houston Texans.

Who knows what would?ve happened to that family if they hadn?t been given a home in 2006. Sometimes all people need is a chance.

11) 106 college football players are leaving school early to apply for the NFL Draft- there were 74-95-95 such players the last three years. 26 of the players come from SEC schools, 24 more from ACC schools.

Florida State, LSU, Texas all lost six players each.

10) If JD Martinez can?t play ball for $25M a year, then the Red Sox should tell him to take a hike and Martinez should go find a real job, where he won?t make $25M a year.

Enough already; he?s had only two great years and will be 31 in August. Martinez has played more than 123 games in a season twice in his career.

9) They re-sodded the middle of the field in Philadelphia this week, after lot of players slipped in last week?s game. Re-sodding a field in the Northeast in January can be dicey, but Doug Pederson said the field is in great shape, so we?ll take his word for it.

8) There are murmurs on the Interweb that Tom Brady has multiple stitches in his passing hand, which is why he wore gloves to his news conference Friday.

Betting line has dropped from 9 to 7.5 points; if somehow Brady didn?t play Sunday, the line with Brian Hoyer playing QB for New England would be Patriots, -2.

7) Alabama hired former New Mexico coach Mike Locksley as its offensive coordinator; he was OC at both Illinois and Maryland, but is considered a better recruiter than a tactician.

6) Michigan State 85, Indiana 57? For some reason Alex Rodriguez was at this game last night, sitting in the student section, wearing an ?Izzone? t-shirt. He?s been on TV a lot lately; he was at a Laker game with JLo and the kids, and was also at another game with his famous wife. Haven?t heard if ARod is going to get the Sunday Night Baseball gig on ESPN, but he?d be good at it.

5) Eagles-Jaguars will meet in London next fall; game could be a Super Bowl rematch, if both underdogs win Sunday. NFL fans in London deserve better games than they gotten recently.

4) NFL has an interesting way of staying in the news 24/7; ESPN started the other day with Mel Kiper?s first mock draft for 2018? he had the Browns taking Wyoming QB Josh Allen with the #1 pick, and then the Giants taking UCLA QB Josh Rosen with the #2 pick.

3) Le?Veon Bell showed up five minutes before the END of the Steelers? walk-through the day before their playoff game, which may be part of why some of the limited partners in the team want a coaching change. Apparently he wasn?t the only player who had a trouble with being on time, and also an assistant coach or two was in that group.

Can remember Troy Aikman telling Joe Buck in an interview program how he retired from the NFL because discipline on the Cowboys slipped badly under Barry Switzer, and it drove him nuts. Aikman was a perfectionist, and he couldn?t stand sloppy preparation.

2) Have you seen the commercial on TV where the guy in the baseball cap adopts a dog at the shelter and brings him home in his truck? Didn?t notice until about the 70th time it was on, but the guy who adopts the dog has an artificial left leg. Just noticed it, thats all.

1) I?ve been scolded by some for talking about politics on here, but I will say this: if the government shuts down, then no politician should receive a penny of pay until it starts up again, and then no retroactive paychecks. If you want to get paid, do your damn job.

Inside the Paint - Saturday
January 20, 2018

NBA bettors could be hesitant to pull the trigger on Saturday?s action after the favorites got knocked around on the hardwood last night. The ?chalk? went 2-5 straight up and 1-6 against the spread and total players riding the high side had to deal with a 5-2 ?under? record.

We?ve got nine contests slated for today and I?m going to bounce around the league with my quick handicap.

Game of the Night ? Warriors at Rockets (ABC, 8:35 p.m. ET)

Golden State (37-9 SU, 21-24-1 ATS) will be looking to conclude its current five-game road trip with a perfect record on Saturday as it meets Houston (31-12 SU, 21-21-1 ATS) from the Toyota Center.

The Warriors opened as 4 ?-point road favorites and this will be tied for the second lowest point-spread that they?ve given this season. Golden State was a 3 ?-point road favorite at Charlotte in early December but they didn?t have Stephen Curry or Draymond Green available.

This will be the third meeting between the teams this season and the visitors have captured each of the first two contests. Houston surprised Golden State 122-121 on opening night as a 9 ?-point road underdog as it closed the game with a 34-20 run in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors avenged that setback recently on Jan. 4 with a 124-114 win at Houston as 4 ?-point road favorites. Curry and Klay Thompson combined for 57 points while Draymond Green (17-14-10) posted a triple-double.

Houston didn?t have James Harden or Chris Paul for that contest due to injuries but Golden State was also without Kevin Durant. All three will be in action on Saturday but the Rockets still won?t have Trevor Ariza or Gerald Green as they serve out their suspension.

The Rockets have gone 16-6 SU and 9-12-1 ATS at home this season and this will be the second time that they?re listed as underdogs. As a fact, they?ve only been ?dogs at home three times in the last two seasons and they?ve gone 0-3 both SU and ATS with two of the losses coming to Golden State.

The latest future odds have Golden State listed as a 10/17 odds-on favorite (Bet $100 to win $58) to win the NBA Finals and you could argue that the odds should be even shorter.

It?s hard to see anybody beating them in a seven-game series yet alone on any given night. Golden State?s road numbers (21-3 SU, 12-12 ATS) have been off the charts and they enter this game with a 14-game winning streak as visitors. For our purposes, they?re a respectable 8-6 ATS during this span while laying healthy numbers.

I wouldn?t advise playing against the Warriors tonight but they?ve got three home games on deck (Knicks, Wolves, Celtics) that aren?t that easy and you should get a good price due to the inflated numbers on Golden State at home.

Tonight?s total is also jacked up a little too much, hovering between 233 and 234 as of Saturday morning.

Houston has been a solid ?over? bet at home (14-8) and that includes an 8-1 run to the high side heading into this game. Golden State has watched the ?over? go 13-11 on the road and bettors got clipped on high wagers in their two most recent games because the opponents (Cavaliers, Bulls) ran out of gas.

The first two meetings this season between the pair went ?over? but that was preceded with a 6-1 ?under? run.

10-9-8 76ers

Philadelphia (21-20 SU, 23-18 ATS) has been in great form again, winning and covering six of its last seven games. That record would be perfect if it wasn?t for a loss to the Celtics (114-103) at the O2 Arena from London on Jan. 11.

On Saturday, Milwaukee (23-21 SU, 18-21-5 ATS) pays a visit and seeing the 76ers open as 6 ?-point home favorites set off the alarms for me. I thought the line was too high and whenever I see that, I usually lean with the opinion of the oddsmakers. However, the Bucks won't have Giannis Antetokounmpo (knee) active and most books went to -7 quickly.

Coupled with Philadelphia?s hot run, you can?t ignore the fact that Milwaukee hasn?t been great on the road (9-12 SU, 11-9-1 ATS) and it hasn?t been in great form. The Bucks are 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS in their last six games and one of the wins came against Orlando.

Last season, this series watched the visitor win and cover all four games. However, the home teams pulled off a three-game sweep in the 2015-16 campaign. Perhaps it will revert back to that trend tonight.

Hotlanta Trap?

The betting public is starting to catch up with Chicago (17-28 SU, 27-16-12 ATS) as a formidable team and wager after a dismal 3-20 start. The club has gone 14-8 since that rough patch and it?s churned out an impressive 17-5 ATS mark while the ?over? has also gone 17-5.

It does make you wonder why a surging Chicago team is listed as a short underdog (+1 ?) to one of the worst teams in the league on Saturday. Despite the losing record, Atlanta (13-31 SU, 24-18-2 ATS) has been competitive on the hardwood and profitable for bettors, which is what matters to us.

The Hawks have gone 9-12 SU and 12-9 ATS at home, which includes a recent 5-1 record over their last six games. The one loss came to Brooklyn (110-105) with the Hawks closing as three-point favorites.

These teams played on Oct. 26 and Chicago capture a 91-86 win over Atlanta from the United Center as a two-point favorite.

This game tips off a little earlier on Saturday at 5:05 p.m. ET.

Back-to-Back

Four clubs will be playing on no rest Saturday and listed below are their records when facing back-to-back spots and notable trends as well. Three of the four will be on the road while the Jazz are playing two in a row from Salt Lake City, which is very rare.

Toronto (3-3 SU, 3-3 ATS, 3-3 O/U) at Minnesota: The Raptors have gone 12-7 versus the Western Conference this season but six of the losses came on the road. This will be the first meeting between the pair this season and the home team has won the last four encounters while the 'over' has gone 4-0 too.

Memphis (3-5 SU, 4-5 ATS, 5-2-1 O/U) at New Orleans: The Grizzlies have won their last two games on no rest and will be searching for a season-high fourth straight win in this matchup. Memphis has won and covered both meetings against New Orleans this season.

Miami (3-4 SU, 2-5 ATS, 3-4 O/U) at Charlotte: The Heat have scored 117, 114 and 111 in its last three games on no rest, which has resulted in a 3-0 ?over? mark. Miami lost to Brooklyn last night and it has gone 5-0 both SU and ATS in its last five after a loss.

Utah (5-4 SU, 7-2 ATS, 4-5 O/U) vs. L.A. Clippers: The Jazz have gone 4-0 both SU and ATS at home on no rest. These teams split the first two regular season encounters, both games taking place at the Staples Center from Los Angeles. The Clippers aren?t expected to have center DeAndre Jordan (ankle) but you could be hard pressed to back the Jazz, who have lost three straight and four of their last five at home.

Thunder thump Cavs 148-124, keep LeBron shy of 30,000 points
January 20, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James couldn't get to 30,000 career points and he and his Cleveland teammates couldn't stop Paul George, Russell Westbrook or Carmelo Anthony as the Oklahoma City Thunder thumped the Cavaliers 148-124 on Saturday for their fourth straight win.

Oklahoma City tied the record for the most points scored against Cleveland in a regulation game. Philadelphia scored 148 back in 1972.

George scored 36, Westbrook had 23 and 20 assists and Anthony scored a season-high 29 as the Thunder embarrassed the Eastern Conference champions, whose defensive issues aren't improving. Cleveland has lost 10 of 14.

James finished with 18 points and is seven shy of becoming the seventh player in NBA history to reach the 30,000-point plateau. His next chance is Tuesday when the Cavs visit San Antonio.

ROCKETS 116, WARRIORS 108

HOUSTON (AP) - Chris Paul scored 33 points and 11 rebounds, James Harden had 22 points and Houston held off Golden State to snap its 14-game road winning streak.

Harden stepped back from Stephen Curry for a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to make it 114-108 with 1:10 left. Harden then blocked Curry's 3-point attempt after a timeout, and Paul made two free throws with 28 seconds left.

Golden State lost away from home for the first time since Nov. 22. The Warriors had won seven straight in Houston.

Kevin Durant led Golden State with 26 points, Draymond Green had 21 and Curry added 19 on a night he went 5 of 15 on 3-point attempts.

76ERS 116, BUCKS 94

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid had 29 points and nine rebounds and Philadelphia pulled away from undermanned Milwaukee for its seventh win in eight games.

Ben Simmons added 16 points and nine assists, and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot added 16 points in a rare start as the Sixers (22-20) moved past Milwaukee (23-22) for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Khris Middleton had 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for the Bucks in their second straight loss. They were without top scorer Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was sitting out the first of two games to rest a sore right knee.

Fellow starter Malcolm Brogdon (family matter) also wasn't available. Tony Snell (15 points) and Sterling Brown (14 points) moved into the lineup, and the Bucks rallied from 16 points down to tie it before fading in the fourth quarter.

TIMBERWOLVES 115, RAPTORS 109

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Andrew Wiggins scored 29 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had all 22 of his points in the second half as Minnesota rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit to beat Toronto.

Playing without leading scorer Jimmy Butler, the Wolves managed to overcome Towns' early foul trouble and hot perimeter shooting by the Raptors to snap a two-game skid.

Kyle Lowry led Toronto with a season-high 40 points on 14-for-25 shooting, including 6 of 10 from behind the arc. The Raptors shot 54 percent in the first half, when they led by as many as 11.

JAZZ 125, CLIPPERS 113

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 23 points and Utah close out Los Angeles.

Despite missing starting guard Rodney Hood because of a leg injury, Utah set season bests for points in the first quarter (39) and first half (76). It never trailed while ending the Clippers' six-game winning streak.

Lou Williams paced the Clippers with 31 points, 10 steals and seven assists, and he helped cut the lead to single digits in the fourth quarter. Blake Griffin added 25 points and eight rebounds.

PELICANS 111, GRIZZLIES 104

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Jrue Holiday scored 13 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, DeMarcus Cousins had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and New Orleans beat Memphis.

Anthony Davis had 21 points and 12 rebounds but did not score his first points of the second half until he dunked with 1:15 to go in the game, giving the Pelicans a 108-102 lead.

Darius Miller added 12 points in a reserve role for New Orleans, which never trailed but very nearly blew a 21-point lead.

BULLS 113, HAWKS 97

ATLANTA (AP) - Robin Lopez scored 20 points, Lauri Markkanen added 19 and Chicago easily beat Atlanta.

The Bulls, coming off a seven-point home loss to defending NBA champion Golden State three days ago, have won four of five. They never trailed, taking an 11-pont lead midway through the first quarter on Lopez's dunk and going up 17 on Markkanen's dunk in the closing seconds of the first half.

Dennis Schroder scored 18 points and Dewayne Dedmon had 11 for Atlanta, which showed why it's spent the season at or near the bottom of the NBA standings.

TRAIL BLAZERS 117, MAVERICKS 108

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard hit his first nine shots - including seven 3-pointers - en route to 31 points, and Portland beat Dallas.

Lillard shot 10 of 15 from the floor and handed out nine assists. CJ McCollum added 26 points for Portland, which won its third straight game overall and season-best sixth straight at home.

Wesley Matthews led Dallas with 23 points. Dirk Nowitzki and Dennis Smith Jr. scored 21 points each, with Nowitzki reaching a season high.

HEAT 106, HORNETS 105

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kelly Olynyk scored 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including a free throw with 0.2 seconds left, to help Miami erase a five-point deficit in the final 34 seconds and stun Charlotte.

Wayne Ellington had 26 points on six 3-pointers, Joe Johnson had 22 points and Olynyk was brilliant down the stretch.

Nic Batum scored a season-high 26 points and Kemba Walker had 22 for Charlotte, which had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??.

13) Oklahoma State 83, Oklahoma 81 OT? Trae Young scored 48 points, but it took some effort- he was 8-20 on the arc, 6-19 inside the arc, 12-12 on the line. He had 8 assists, 7 turnovers? no other Sooner scored in double figures.

In his last three games, Young is 20-48 on the arc, 17-39 inside the arc, 17-23 on the line, with 21 assists, 28 turnovers. He has the ball a lot.

Sooners were down 25-6 in this game, fought back to force OT, but Cowboys win to split the Bedlam series this season.

12) Fresno State-Air Force basketball game was postponed because of the government being shut down? all athletic activities at the Air Force Academy were postponed.

11) Auburn 79, Georgia 65? Dawgs led 40-26 at halftime, but Auburn started second half on a 31-4 run and won going away.

10) Kansas freshman Billy Preston isn?t at Kansas anymore; he signed up to play in the Bosnian pro basketball league, figuring he was never going to become eligible to play for the Jayhawks this season, after he was in a car accident and questions arose over who bought the car he was driving.

9) UNLV 79, Colorado State 74? Rebels scored the last 14 points of the game; if you took five points with the hometown Rams in this game, a push wasn?t what you had in mind. UNLV is 3-0 on road in Mountain West, but 0-3 at home. Go figure.

8) USC 74, Oregon State 67? Trojans sweep their Oregon trip for first time since 2008.

7) Thunder 148, Cavaliers 124? Cleveland is 3-18-1 vs spread at home; they?ve lost nine of their last 12 games overall.

6) I?m totally convinced that in college basketball, one of the most important skills for a player to have is getting loose balls. Not rebounds over the rim, but long rebounds off missed 3-pointers, and deflected passes. There are so many of those in college ball now- the ability to anticipate where those loose balls are going to go often decides who wins games.

5) Kansas 70, Baylor 67? Jayhawks outscored Baylor 9-0 over last 2:51 to pull this game out; they are 6-1 in Big X, with no wins by more than six points.

4) Florida 66, Kentucky 64? Wildcats lost three of their last five games, are just 4-3 in SEC.

3) St Mary?s 72, Pacific 69? Gaels had bit of a hangover after winning at Gonzaga, but they got by the surging Tigers, who had their 5-game winning streak snapped.

2) Upsets of the Day:
NC-Wilmington 73 (+8), Towson State 71 OT
Iowa State (+7) 70, Texas Tech 52
Coastal Carolina (+7) 74, Troy State 73
New Mexico (+6.5) 79, San Diego State 75
Portland (+6.5) 72, LMU 65
Ohio U (+6) 72, Eastern Michigan 66
Washington (+6) 72, Colorado 62

1) Oregon 94, UCLA 91? Bill Walton insinuated that the Bruins have internal problems; don?t forget they suspended those two players from the shoplifting debacle in China, and one of those kids was supposed to be a starter.

UCLA was down big in this game, but stormed back and damn near won the game, but instead they?ve lost three games in a row? Bruins are only 4-4 in the Pac-12.
