Rockets beat Timberwolves 120-102 for 11th straight win
February 23, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden scored 31 points and the Houston Rockets won their 11th straight game with a 120-102 victory Friday night over the Minnesota Timberwolves, who lost All-Star Jimmy Butler to a knee injury.

Butler left late in the third quarter. After grabbing a rebound, he pivoted and planted hard on his right foot before collapsing and grabbing his right knee. He was on the floor for at least three minutes before he was carried off the court by two teammates.

Coach Tom Thibodeau said Butler will have an MRI and be re-evaluated on Saturday.

Clint Capela had 25 points and 11 rebounds for Houston, getting his 10th double-double over the past 13 games. Chris Paul added 14 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

The Rockets trailed for much of the first half before going ahead to maintain the NBA's best record.

Andrew Wiggins led Minnesota with 21 points, and Jeff Teague and Karl-Anthony Towns both had 18 points. Towns added 13 rebounds.

TRAIL BLAZERS 100, JAZZ 81

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - CJ McCollum scored 26 points, Damian Lillard added 24 and Portland snapped Utah's 11-game winning streak.

McCollum and Lillard drove through and around the Jazz defense, which was ranked at the top of the league during their streak.

The Jazz finally got within single digits at 90-81, but McCollum scored on three consecutive isolation plays, all contested jumpers.

Jusuf Nurkic scored 15 points and Al-Farouq Aminu had 12 for the Blazers.

Donovan Mitchell scored 21 points for Utah, and Rudy Gobert had 15.

PELICANS 124, HEAT 123, OT

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis had 45 points, 17 rebounds, five blocked shots and five steals, and New Orleans earned its fourth consecutive victory.

Goran Dragic scored 30 points and Dwyane Wade hit two runners to give the Heat the lead twice in the last 36 seconds of overtime, but Davis responded to the first with a layup as he was fouled, and Jrue Holiday answered the second with a runner in the lane with 7 seconds left.

Wade had one last shot for the win with Holiday defending him closely. It bounced off the rim to Josh Richardson, whose rushed put-back missed the basket as time expired in Miami's third straight loss.

Holiday finished with 29 points and nine assists, connecting with Davis on a couple of alley-oop dunks.

CAVALIERS 112, GRIZZLIES 89

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - LeBron James had 18 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists in his 11th triple-double of the season, and Cleveland pulled away after a slow start.

George Hill also scored 18 points, while Larry Nance Jr. finished with 15 and Jordan Clarkson had 14 as the newcomers had good nights in the Cavaliers' fifth win in the last six games.

Tyreke Evans and JaMychal Green each had 15 points for Memphis, with Evans also dishing out 10 assists and Green grabbing 10 rebounds. Marc Gasol had 14 points and nine rebounds.

Cleveland outscored Memphis 58-40 in the second half, sending the Grizzlies to their eighth straight loss.

BUCKS 122, RAPTORS 119, OT

TORONTO (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 26 points and 12 rebounds, helping Milwaukee snap Toronto's seven-game win streak.

Eric Bledsoe and Khris Middleton each scored 21 points as the Bucks won the opener of an eight-game stretch against teams in playoff contention. Jason Terry scored 14 points, and John Henson and Thon Maker each had 12.

DeMar DeRozan scored 33 points for the Raptors, who had won five straight home meetings with the Bucks. Serge Ibaka had 18 points, and Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam each scored 17.

Jonas Valanciunas' buzzer-beating dunk for Toronto sent the game to overtime. He finished with 10 points.

CLIPPERS 128, SUNS 117

PHOENIX (AP) - Super-sub Lou Williams had 35 points in 33 minutes, and the Clippers scored the first 19 points of the game while handing the Suns their eighth loss in a row.

Tobias Harris added 30 points and 12 rebounds for the Clippers. They have won eight of 11.

Devin Booker and T.J. Warren scored 27 apiece for the Suns, who have dropped 13 of 14. Alex Len had 14 points and 13 rebounds.

HORNETS 122, WIZARDS 105

WASHINGTON (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half, leading Charlotte to the road win.

Frank Kaminsky added 23 points as the Hornets (26-33) improved to 3-0 against the Wizards this season. Charlotte jumped out to a 20-point lead in the first half and matched its season high with 17 3-pointers in its third consecutive win. Marvin Williams scored 15 points, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 14.

Washington returned from the All-Star break with a rousing 110-103 win at Cleveland on Thursday, but could not keep the momentum going despite All-Star Bradley Beal scoring 33 points.

The loss dropped the Wizards (34-25) into a fourth-place tie with Indiana in the Eastern Conference.

NUGGETS 122, SPURS 119

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic had 28 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists for Denver, and Wilson Chandler had 18 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.

Jokic has a triple-double in three straight games and six this season, but didn't stick around for the finish. He was called for five fouls in the fourth quarter and fouled out on a charge with 1:46 left.

Gary Harris scored 23 points to help Denver win its fourth straight and seventh in its last eight.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 36 points and Patty Mills scored 20 for San Antonio.

CELTICS 110, PISTONS 98

DETROIT (AP) - Kyrie Irving scored 18 points and rookie Daniel Theis had a career-high 19 to lift Boston to the victory.

Jayson Tatum scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half for the Celtics, who went into the All-Star break on a three-game losing streak but returned with a solid win on the road. Boston took control by outscoring the Pistons 38-21 in the second quarter.

Blake Griffin scored 17 points for Detroit but shot just 5 of 19 from the field.

Theis eclipsed his previous career high of 12 points. He played an important role after Aron Baynes, the starting center for the Celtics, went to the locker room in the first half with left elbow soreness.

PACERS 116, HAWKS 93

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Thaddeus Young scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half, and Indiana never trailed in a runaway victory.

The 11th-year pro had 10 points by the end of the opening quarter and the Pacers led by 17 by halftime. They were ahead 83-66 entering the final quarter.

The Pacers (34-25) won their fourth in a row and improved to 15-6 since Jan. 6, the league's best winning percentage (.714) in that span. Domantas Sabonis led Indiana with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

The Hawks (18-42), who have the NBA's worst record, are 5-25 on the road and have dropped three in a row overall.

LAKERS 124, MAVERICKS 102

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Julius Randle had 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, and Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball made a triumphant return to the lineup.

Ball, who was sidelined for 15 games with a knee injury, had nine points, seven rebounds and six assists in 17 minutes. Isaiah Thomas had 17 points and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Brandon Ingram scored 15 apiece to help Los Angeles stop a three-game slide.

It was Randle's second triple-double this season and No. 5 for his career.

Wesley Matthews and Harrison Barnes each scored 19 points for the Mavericks, who have dropped five of six.

Saturday?s 6-pack

Six top prospects for the Baltimore Orioles:

1) Austin Hays, OF? Jumped from A ball to the majors last season.

3) Chance Sisco, C? Lefty batter hit .267 in AAA last year.

4) Hunter Harvey, P? Father Bryan was a closer who had 177 MLB saves.

6) Tanner Scott, P? Allowed 45 hits in 69 IP in Eastern League LY.

9) Cedric Mullens, OF? 5-8 centerfielder who played in college for Campbell Camels.

16) DJ Stewart, OF? Was ACC Player of the Year at Florida State in 2014.

Quote of the Day
?You?d love to say, ?This is a really isolated situation,? but I think anyone that?s in this knows that it?s not. You could be probably be changing a lot of names and you could be changing on all different levels. You could be putting another name here, another name there.?
Former Indiana coach Tom Crean

Of the ten teams currently in the Big East, Butler is the only team yet to win a game in the Big East tournament since the league re-configured.

***************************

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??

13) There is a high school QB in Alabama named Paul Tyson who has 18 college offers, but people are pretty much assuming that he will sign with the Crimson Tide.

Paul Tyson is Bear Bryant?s great-grandson. Alabama royalty.

12) I heard a schoolteacher say this on TV Thursday night:

?Red pens are traumatizing. I make corrections with purple ink.?

I?m hoping she was kidding; if kids aren?t spunky enough to get over having their work criticized with red ink, what chance will they have in the real world? It is probably best that I don?t have any kids; they?d be traumatized every 10 minutes.

Good grief, part of growing up is developing some thick skin to get through life?s ups and downs. Red ink from a high school teacher shouldn?t be much of an obstacle.

11) A Canadian women?s hockey player took off her silver medal as soon as it was placed around her neck this week; she wanted to win the gold medal, just like everyone else, but she couldn?t stand to have that reminder of her team?s losing around her neck.

That reminded me of something I read a long time ago; Hugh Durham was a basketball coach at both Florida State and Georgia; he made the Final Four at both stops, but his team finished 2nd in a Christmas tournament one year, and when someone handed him the 2nd-place trophy in the locker room, he fired it against the wall and smashed it to bits.

I was probably 10 years old when I read that; remember thinking, ?Wow, that guy is serious.? I understand it better now, but it was eye-opening back then.

10) Kentucky Fried Chicken had to close 800 of its 900 stores in the UK/Ireland for a few days last week, and for a very good reason.

They ran out of chicken. Seriously, they did.

KFC changed its delivery company, and the new company fowled up (ha!!!) its delivery schedule big-time, leaving most of the stores without chicken, which is a problem.

9) Interesting article on SI.com about how Tom Crean spent the first few months after being fired by Indiana last spring. He has gone around and visited teams in all sports, and learned from them, on different/better ways to do things.

Crean visited the Patriots, the Chargers, with Tony LaRussa and with his ESPN broadcasting duties, a lot of college basketball teams. The theme of all this is that you should never stop learning, and can always get better at your job.

8) 76-year old Jerry Glanville, who coached the Atlanta Falcons from 1985-93, is the new defense coordinator of the CFL?s Hamilton TigerCats, who are coached by June Jones III. There is a chance that Johnny Manziel might be the TiCats? QB this season, which would put them in the running to be North America?s most interesting pro football team.

7) Purdue is a really good basketball team, but they?re 0-8-1 vs spread in their last nine games, same way that Gonzaga is 2-10 vs spread in its last twelve games.

6) A?s/Mariners will open the 2019 season in Tokyo; my initial reaction to stuff like this is most always negative, but last time the A?s opened the season in Japan was 2012 and they went on to have a fantastic second half of the season and made the playoffs, so we?ll see.

5) Corey Dickerson hit .282 with 27 HR?s for Tampa Bay LY, so of course they traded him to the Pirates Thursday, for Daniel Hudson and a minor leaguer.

4) There is an agent named Jimmy Sexton who represents 11 of the 14 head football coaches in the SEC. Pretty influential guy.

3) Right now, the SEC basketball race has a 6-way tie for 3rd place at 8-7, with Kentucky one of those teams. I?m guessing the selection committee is going to have a headache sorting out all these teams with similar resumes.

2) Charles (Peanut) Tillman, an NFL cornerback for 13 years with Chicago/Carolina, is making good use of his post-NFL time. He is now an FBI agent, becoming one at age 37, the latest you can become an FBI agent. Good for him.

1? They broke ground in Las Vegas Friday on a new ballpark for the AAA Las Vegas 51?s, up in the northwest part of town, in Summerlin; Mets are leaving town after this season- they haven?t said who the new team will be.

It also snowed in Las Vegas Friday; not sure if there is a connection there or not.

Saturday's Tip Sheet
February 24, 2018

Game of the Night: Thunder at Warriors (-9, 233 ?) ? 8:30 PM EST

Oklahoma City (34-26 SU, 25-35 ATS) is a perfect 2-for-2 this season against Golden State as the two Western Conference rivals meet up at Oracle Arena. Round 1 prior to Thanksgiving was all Thunder in a 108-91 blowout of the Warriors at Chesapeake Energy Arena as 5 ?-point underdogs. OKC one-upped itself in the next matchup in Oakland earlier this month by dominating Golden State, 125-105 as 10-point underdogs, led by the 1-2 punch of Paul George (38 points) and Russell Westbrook (34 points).

Golden State (45-14 SU, 26-32-1 ATS) bounced back from a loss at Portland prior to the All-Star break to knock off the Clippers on Thursday, 134-127. The Warriors failed to cash as 11-point home favorites, but the defending champions shot a scorching 62% from the floor, highlighted by a 44-point effort from Stephen Curry. The two-time Most Valuable Player drilled 8-of-11 three-pointers, while Kevin Durant chipped in 24 points to lead the Warriors to their 23rd home win in 30 tries this season.

The Thunder built an early 23-point lead at Sacramento on Thursday, but the Kings rallied all the way back to lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Westbrook broke a 107-107 tie by knocking down the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to lift OKC to a 110-107 triumph and its third win over Sacramento this season. Although the Thunder didn?t cover as an eight-point favorite, OKC improved to 6-3 in their past nine road contests.

Oklahoma City is currently on a four-game OVER streak, while topping the 110-point mark during each game in this stretch. Golden State has hit the OVER in four of the past five contests, while the two matchups with Oklahoma City have finished UNDER the total.

Cashing Celtics

A three-game losing streak going into the All-Star break spelled trouble for the Celtics (41-19 SU, 35-23-2 ATS). However, Boston got back on the winning track in Friday?s victory at Detroit as two-point favorites to improve to 7-3 in the past 10 road contests. The Celtics seek their third win over the Knicks this season after routing New York twice at home, but falling at Madison Square Garden in late December, 102-93

New York (24-36 SU, 29-31 ATS) ended a nine-game skid by outlasting Orlando on Thursday, 120-113 as 3 ?-point underdogs. The Knicks yielded 41 first quarter points, but limited the Magic to 44 points in the second half, as Trey Burke dropped 26 points off the bench for New York. This is a difficult two-game stretch for New York, who hosts Golden State on Monday prior to a four-game road swing beginning Friday in Los Angeles against the Clippers. Following a solid home start, the Knicks have dropped to 1-7 SU/ATS in the last eight games at MSG since beating Boston on December 21.

Right on Target

The last time the Timberwolves and Bulls hooked up at the United Center earlier this month, Chicago picked up a 114-113 upset as 7 ?-point underdogs in Jimmy Butler?s return to the Windy City. Butler posted 38 points against his former team, but Minnesota suffered its 10th road loss in 11 tries since the start of January. Minnesota lost again on the road last night at Houston, while Butler suffered a non-contact knee injury and is listed as doubtful for tonight's action. The Wolves (36-25 SU, 28-31-2 ATS) return to the Target Center where they have fared slightly better than the road by going 14-1 in the past 15 home contests.

The Bulls (20-38 SU, 31-26-1 ATS) squandered a five-point lead in the final 35 seconds of Thursday?s 116-115 home setback to the 76ers. Chicago managed a cover as 7 ?-point underdogs, but slipped to 2-10 in the last 12 games in spite of a career-high 38 points off the bench from Bobby Portis. The Bulls are winless in their last five games away from the United Center, which includes ATS losses in their past four road contests.

On the Road Again

The Lakers (24-34 SU, 31-27 ATS) closed out the first half of the season with three consecutive road losses at Dallas, New Orleans, and Minnesota, while allowing an average of 129.3 points per game. Los Angeles hits the highway for a four-game swing starting in Sacramento, coming off Friday?s 124-102 blowout victory over Dallas as seven Lakers finished in double-figures, led by Julius Randle?s 18 points.

The Kings (18-40 SU, 26-29-3 ATS) covered for the fourth straight time in Thursday?s buzzer-beating setback to the Thunder, but slipped to 1-7 in the past eight at Golden 1 Center. Sacramento owns a 1-10 ATS record in its last 11 attempts as a home underdog, but the Kings have won four of the previous five home matchups with Los Angeles dating back to the start of the 2015-16 campaign.

Stop the Music

The All-Star break definitely came at a bad time for Utah, who was riding an 11-game winning streak. The Jazz (30-29 SU, 31-28 ATS) lost to the Trail Blazers for the first time in three tries this season on Friday, 100-81 as 4 ?-point favorites. Not only did Utah?s hot streak ended, but the Jazz couldn?t do much offensively by shooting 42% from the floor and 6-of-25 from three-point range. Utah slipped to 0-3 ATS the last three games, but Quin Snyder?s team owns a solid 8-4 SU and 9-3 ATS record with no rest this season.

Utah welcomes Dallas, as the Mavericks (18-41 SU, 29-29-1 ATS) dropped to 7-22 on the road following Friday?s 22-point setback to the Lakers. The Mavs have lost eight of their last nine games away from American Airlines Center, but Rick Carlisle?s squad has compiled a 12-2-1 ATS record in their 15 tries as a single-digit road underdog. Dallas looks to avenge a 104-89 defeat at Utah in October, while losing in four of the past five visits to Salt Lake City.

Dinero Tracker - Feb. 24
February 24, 2018

Read the Dinero Tracker's mission statement here
Last night's ATS Records
NBA: 4-4 | NCAA BB: 10-4

It could've been a 13-1 night in college had a few timely shots fallen, but it was nonethless filled with prosperity. Meanwhile, a .500 night in the NBA carried grave consequences, from Jimmy Butler leaving with a non-contact knee injury to the annoying instance of getting in on a game too early. Take it as a lesson to always shop lines. Both guaranteed plays came in. Here is Friday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

SATURDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Oregon -2

With Allonzo Trier sidelined, DeAndre Ayton's recruitment under scrutiny and Sean Miller potentially having already coached his last game given the taped conversations the feds have reportedly uncovered to doom him, Arizona is in shambles. Dana Altman's Ducks are in the midst of a successful l run as they try to land on the right side of the bubble and and won't have any sympathy for the plight of the Pac-12's leader. Ride Oregon.

FRIDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Celtics/Pistons UNDER 205

Brad Stevens has gotten the better of Stan Van Gundy in five of their last seven games. It's helped to have the better team, but since their first two meetings went OT and both coaches want their teams to lock down defensively after getting sloppy before the break, there's definitely a competitive vibe in play here over your typical first outing after All-Star. Marcus Smart returns to help the Celtics try and shore things up, so I expect this game to see defense tighten up and tempo to slow down. Ride the under.

Result: Most of you read this well after I posted, so in that case, you were fortunate and either pushed or won at under 208.5 when Greg Monroe missed a pair of free throws and Detroit's Dwight Buycks got denied in the final 24 seconds of Boston's 110-98 win. I didn't see the big bump coming, but still liked my chances up 105-90 with two minutes to go. I did not enjoy the finish.

FRIDAY'S LOCK

The pick: Clippers/Suns OVER 229

After cashing with a big play on the Clippers' lack of defense last night, the expectation here is that this matchup against the Suns will yield a similar track meet. Devin Booker and Elfrid Payton are going to push at all costs, while the Clips are mindful that the only way that they're reaching the playoffs this season is to collect gimmes against teams like the Suns. Ride the over, guaranteed.

Result: L.A. raced out to a 19-0 lead, but once Phoenix started scoring, this game got on the right track. The Clippers did the heavy lifting in the first half by building a 79-50 lead, while a 72-point fourth quarter aided by a little Hack-a-DeAndre Jordan brought this in easily. The Clips won 128-117.

FRIDAY'S OTHER LOCK

The pick: Western Michigan/Ball State OVER 146

The Cardinals scored just 58 points in Kalamazoo when these teams squared off on Jan. 13, one of the three lowest outputs of the season, but they're a completely different team at home. Over the past four games, they've averaged 88 points, so don't expect the tempo to slow down in this rematch in Muncie, which should suit Thomas Wilder and the Broncos just fine. Ride the over, guaranteed.

Result: The Broncos caught the Cardinals from behind, pulling off an 87-80 upset. After a slow start, both teams got going as the respective stars for both teams, Thomas Wilder ande Tahjai Teague, each had big nights.

TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Brown/Columbia OVER 156.5

These teams played a 91-88 game in Rhode Island two weeks ago, and this game may get close to that number even if there's no OT. Columbia dominated Princeton last week and has scored 77 or more in seven of the last eight, while Brown is more than willing to run since they lack much size. Ride the over.

Result: The Lions and Bears gave us an early scare, but combined for 102 second-half points to easily clear this hurdle. Columbia won 89-82.

UPSET CITY

The pick: Hornets +3.5

The Hornets rocked the Nets last night and have come out of the break with a mission to try and work their way back into the East playoff picture. They'll run into a Wizards team that is playing only their second back-to-back since losing John Wall, which is bad news since they lack depth and have guys that aren't exactly built for the grind at the moment. Take the points and ride Charlotte.

Result: Charlotte took control early and never let go. Make a mental note of Washington back-to-backs going forward, because the Hornets rolled, hitting 17 3-pointers in a 122-105 win.

CARDIAC ATTACK

The pick: Indiana +2.5, IU/Ohio State UNDER 139

Ohio State has already secured a top-three seed in the Big Ten Tournament, while the Hoosiers will be playing on March 1 and can improve their chances of playing against a team that will have played the night before if they can win on Senior Night here. Archie Miller's first squad has been dramatically better in Bloomington than they've been away from home, so expect a competitive affair against a Buckeyes team that has dropped their last two road game. Take the points with Indiana and ride the under for the in-game parlay.

Result: The Buckeyes and Hoosiers flirted with delivering the under by each going cold down the stretch, but blew it up due to a failure to execute in the final minute. The teams even flirted with delivering the under in spite of playing a whole OT session, but went into a second one tied at 70. This would've been a total loss had I not waited until late and grabbed Indiana +2.5, allowing me to survive C.J. Jackson's game-winner in Ohio State's 80-78 win.

SWING AND A MISS

The pick: Timberwolves +9, Rockets/Wolves OVER 224.5

Tonight's nationally televised opening half of ESPN's doubleheader could very well be a playoff preview, but I don't anticipate we'll see a premium placed on defense coming out of the break. The expectation here is that the TImberwolves will be able to execute well and hang around all night via a rested Jimmy Butler, who controversially sat out All-Star Weekend despite remaining on the West roster. Ride Minnesota and the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: We'll find out what happens with Butler's knee soon, but it didn't look good. Hopefully, it's not season-ending. It was definitely wager-ending since the Rockets took control in his absence. We almost gained a split on the total, but Shabazz Muhammad fumbled away the Wolves final possession in a 120-102 loss.

PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: Rhode Island -10.5

The Rams are definitely up for this nationally televised clash against a rival that was expected to provide the stiffest challenge to their A-10 dominance, so I'd expect them to be up for this one. Although the Flyers have dropped consecutive games, this is by far their toughest road trip of the conference season and I just don't trust them to hang within single-digits. Lay the points and ride Rhode Island. ?

Result: This started off rough since the Flyers came out intent on showing a little backbone, but that didn't translate to the second half. The Rams took control immediately after the break and coasted to an 81-56 win. Rhody -6.5 in the second half was an easy winner.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six top prospects for the Boston Red Sox:

1) Jay Groome, P? When your #1 prospect has a 3-9 career record, that says a lot.

2) Michael Chavis, 3B? Hit .250 in 67 games in the Eastern League LY.

6) Darwinzon Hernandez, P? Three years in, hasn?t escaped A-ball yet.

7) Sam Travis, 1B? Ht .263 in 76 big league AB?s last season.

20) Hector Velasquez, P? Had 2.92 ERA in 25 big league IP last season.

23) Brian Johnson, P? Struck out 21 batters in 27 big league IP last year.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Oregon 89, Arizona 83 OT? Most intense regular season college basketball game I?ve seen in years; Arizona was out to win for its suspended coach, with an us-against-them mentality, but they ran out of gas in overtime, and lost despite 28 points, 13 rebounds from Deandre Ayton.

Sean Miller has a weird contract at Arizona; he gets $10.3M if he is fired for cause, but only $5.15M if he is fired without cause. Either way, if Arizona fires him because of this mess, he ain?t gonna have to work anymore.

With all this FBI stuff going on, will the IRS go after the families who took payoff money and didn?t pay taxes on it? If coaches are losing their jobs, I hope they do go after the families.

12) Shaquille O?Neal?s son is a big time high school recruit this year who had committed to play at Arizona. He de-committed Saturday, which is probably good news for LSU, Shaq?s alma mater.

11) Virginia 66, Pitt 37? Halftime score: Virginia 30, Pitt 7. I?m not making that up. 30-7. Pitt was 1-22 from the floor in the first half. One basket, 22 shots. No bueno.

Sean Miller is a Pitt alum and from the Pittsburgh area. You wonder if they would hire him once Arizona shows him the door, which could happen soon. Given Arizona?s NCAA troubles, probably not.

10) Kansas 74, Texas Tech 72? Jayhawks clinched at least a tie for their 14th consecutive Big X title, which is extremely impressive. Don?t think they had the best team in the league this year but that does not matter, since they?ve won the most games.

9) Creighton 89, Villanova 83 OT? The huge grin Creighton coach Greg McDermott wore in the last few seconds of this game said a lot; the Bluejays are going to the NCAA?s.

Villanova split its last six games; they?ll be a shaky #1 seed when NCAA tournament brackets come out in two weeks.

8) If you read this space regularly, you know I?m a big fan of the Showtime series Billions. Learned last night that Paul Giamatti, the actor who plays prosecutor Chuck Rhoades, is the son of the late baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti.

Has to be a way they can work Pete Rose into an episode to bust Chuck?s chops.

7) William & Mary 114, Charleston 104 OT? Cougars scored 1.30 ppp and lost, which almost never happens. Teams combined to shoot 21-47 on arc. W&M blew a 16-point second half lead but made 33-38 on the foul line.

If seeds hold in CAA tourney, these teams would meet in the semifinals.

6) So far this season, 105 of 351 D-I teams have taken 40%+ of their FGA?s from behind arc; eight years ago, only 33 teams took 40% of their shots behind the arc.

279 of 351 teams have taken 33.3% of their shots behind the arc; eight years ago, only 149 teams did. College basketball has largely become a 6-6 and under sport.

The increase in 3-pointers means more long rebounds, more loose balls? success in shooting 3-pointers is tough to sustain from game-to-game. It creates hugely erratic performances from more and more teams. Makes the sport much harder to handicap.

5) Oregon State 79, Arizona State 75? Beavers led by 9 with 2:36 to go, ASU tied it with about a minute left, but never scored again. Bobby Hurley was going off on one of the refs as the game went off the air. Sun Devils are 7-9 in the Pac-12, after a 12-0 pre-conference mark- they have no inside game, and their guards played lot better in December than they are now.

4) Seton Hall 81, St John?s 74 OT? Red Storm played six guys in an overtime game; four of their five starters played more than 40:00? their only sub played 23:00.

3) Jacksonville Jaguars gave QB Blake Bortles a 3-year, $54M contract, so they?re out of the market for a new quarterback.

2) Upsets of the Day:
Wyoming (+9.5) 78, Fresno State 68
Creighton (+7.5) 89, Villanova 83 OT
Tenn-Martin (+7) 72, SE Missouri 66
Indiana State (+6) 66, Bradley 64
Valparaiso (+5) 69, Drake 64
Arkansas (+5) 76, Alabama 73
Louisville (+4) 75, Virginia Tech 68

1? Baseball streak that will never, ever be topped; in 1980, Oakland?s Rick Langford threw 22 straight complete games, one of which went 14 innings. He went 19-12, 3.26 for the season in 35 starts, throwing 290 innings.

Sunday's Essentials
February 25, 2018

Game of the Night - Philadelphia at Washington, ESPN, 8:05 ET

Beyond Boston and Toronto, teams that have built up a cushion likely to keep them in place as the Eastern Conference?s top two seeds once the regular season comes to an end, four of the next five spots are held by teams that enter Sunday?s action with 25 losses.

Cleveland has a slight lead on that pack and would be the No. 3 seed if the playoffs began today, so the remaining teams could very well be vying for the final spot commanding a homecourt advantage in the first round.

The Southeast Division-leading Wizards are looking to remain in the mix until John Wall returns and have done a nice job thus far, coming in 8-4 since their All-Star point guard opted to fix a season-long issue via knee surgery. He revealed that he?s off crutches, so the Wizards realistically will only have to kill another month before bringing him back to get reacclimated.

Bradley Beal has had the ball in his hands more, but lately, Washington?s success can be attributed to them sharing the ball more and finding the open man. Tomas Satoransky had 11 assists in a win over the Knicks just before the All-Star break and came out of it with eight more while shooting 6-for-7 to key a road upset of Cleveland.

The Wizards didn?t look like they had legs the next night in a 122-105 loss to Charlotte, so they?ll be out to avoid a losing streak here. Satoransky and Kelly Oubre will attempt to continue making teams pay for shadowing coverages to get the ball out of Beal?s hands, which will be the key to avoiding a second loss this month against the visiting 76ers.

Philadelphia largely controlled last night?s 116-105 win over Orlando, and even though the Magic trimmed a large deficit down to nine points in the final minutes, head coach Brett Brown stuck to his objective of keeping starters on the bench down the stretch. He was mindful of how big a game this is for his group, which is just starting to learn how to win and has to prove they can elevate their level when games begin to matter more.

Joel Embiid delivered 28 points and 14 rebounds and is expected to play in what will be his third back-to-back situation of his career, all of which have come this month. He also played in the Rising Stars Challenge and the All-Star Game in addition to the marathon of media responsibilities, so we?ll see whether fatigue plays any factor here.

He dominated in a 115-102 win over Washington on March 6, finishing with 27 points and 13 rebounds, which are roughly his averages on the second night of a back-to-back thus far. The 76ers are 1-1 in those games, losing at Indiana and beating the Clippers at home.

The Wizards have scored over 100 points in 12 straight games, so the over is 8-4 in that stretch. The 76ers have played in three straight games that have topped the posted total and have topped the century mark in seven straight. The first three meetings between these teams have all gone ?over,? with the last two totals set in the same ballpark as tonight?s number (212.5).

Washington will be looking to split the season series with a victory here after dropping the last two meetings, both of which were played without Wall.

Houston at Denver, Altitude, 8:05

The Rockets own the NBA?s current longest winning streak (11) and begin a run of road games at three Western Conference playoff contenders over the next four nights. With Trevor Ariza having returned, the Rockets are close to full strength again, although standout sixth man Eric Gordon remains doubtful with an illness that kept him out on Friday night.

Denver opened action after the break with a win over San Antonio, riding Nikola Jokic?s third straight triple-double. Although the Spurs came in short-handed, they still hung around and forced Jokic, Gary Harris and Jamal Murray to make big plays down the stretch. Their growth is essential if the Nuggets are to flourish over the season?s last six weeks.

Denver has won seven of eight outright, the last six of which have all come in games that eclipsed the posted total. There have been at least 223 combined points scored in each of the Nuggets? last eight contests, a run which includes a 130-104 loss in Houston on Feb. 9. The Rockets also won at home 125-95 on Nov. 22, but should find this first venture into the Mile-High city this season to be far more challenging.

Bookmakers opened this total at 228, but the number came down to 227 in the early morning despite public betting hammering the high side.

San Antonio at Cleveland, ABC, 3:35

The Sunday afternoon showcase is back regularly again, providing an interesting matchup with the Spurs visiting new-look Cleveland. Kawhi Leonard remains out indefinitely and may not be back all season, but Gregg Popovich will have guard Danny Green back after he fell ill before the Nuggets game.

Rudy Gay has also returned to help Kyle Anderson fill in for Leonard, so San Antonio will be deeper than they have been in recent weeks if Manu Ginobili is cleared to play after suffering a chest injury.

On Thursday, the Cavs lost for the first time since moving Isaiah Thomas and five others out of town in a reshuffling of the deck after a brutal run before the trade deadline. Washington took advantage of porous defense with great ball movement, so it will be interesting to see whether San Antonio can similarly execute.

Neither George Hill nor Rodney Hood has excelled the way Jordan Clarkson has thus far, but there does appear to be a different energy with the group. We?ll see whether that continues.

LeBron James has shot 36-for-61 since picking up a batch of new teammates, so he?s clearly been re-energized, averaging 31 points, 8.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists. He?s averaging a triple-double thus far this month.

San Antonio won the first meeting between these teams 114-102 on Jan. 23 despite 28-9-7 from James. Not only did Leonard miss that game, but Pau Gasol, Ginobili and Gay also sat..

Dinero Tracker - Feb. 25
February 25, 2018

Read the Dinero Tracker's mission statement here
Last night's ATS Records
NBA: 8-1 | NCAA BB: 29-11

There won't be too many days better than Saturday in this business, so I'm confident entering March of a college basketball season where there truly isn't a favorite. Come along on the ride. Customers got a near-perfect night in the pros and got down on four separate college in-game parlays. Both guaranteed plays came in for the second straight night. Of course, there was drama. Always is. Saint Mary's/Santa Clara came in as an in-game parlay I really liked but didn't get around to posting. There were a pair of brutal losses, which you'll read about in detail below. Mostly, however, we simply cashed. From noon to after mindnight, we went all in, buffet-style. 4-0 in SEC and ACC games. 2-0 on Big Ten, beginning with a Michigan/Over winner. Here is Saturday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

SUNDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Rockets/Nuggets OVER 228

Houston opens a stretch where it will play seven of its next eight games on the road, so the NBA?s current longest winning streak (11) isn?t likely to be extended too much longer since it will be up against three Western Conference playoff contenders over the next four nights. Denver opened with a clutch win over San Antonio and has won seven of eight outright, the last six of which have all come in games that eclipsed the posted total. There have been at least 223 combined points scored in each of the Nuggets? last eight contests, a run which includes a 130-104 loss in Houston on Feb. 9. The Rockets also won at home 125-95 on Nov. 22, but will find this first venture into the Mile-High city this season to be far more challenging. They?ll still score a bunch, but Denver is better suited to keep pace, especially with Nikola Jokic dominating, having posted three straight triple-doubles. Expect both teams to fill it up in a competitive affair and ride the over.

Result: This line grew to as much as 5.5 after the expectation that Miller wouldn't coach came to fruition, but Ayton played and dominated amid taunts, finishing with 28 points and 18 boards. Oregon managed to rally from a double-digit second-half deficit and then survived squandering the lead in regulation to win 98-93 in OT, cashing for most everyone since the line closed in the 4-to-4.5 range.

SATURDAY'S LOCK

The pick: Heat -8.5

Look for Erik Spoelstra to exact a little revenge for his buddy David Fizdale, as it definitely appears the Grizzlies will be in trouble here. Dwyane Wade is expected to partake and the Heat will remain locked in after coming up just short in an OT marathon against New Orleans. The Grizzlies will be without Tyreke Evans and Wayne Selden, so getting much done on the perimeter will be an issue. Ride Miami, guaranteed.

Result: We got a bonus here since this pick was made with no knowledge that Marc Gasol would sit on the second night of a back-to-back, so the Grizzlies had little chance of hanging around for 48 minutes with their depleted group. .

SATURDAY'S OTHER LOCK

The pick: Duke -14

Marvin Bagley III will return today and the program hasn't been severely impacted by college basketball's scandal thus far, which despite implicating Wendell Carter, Jr., probably will lack the concrete evidence to dump Coach K's empire. Celebrate with a rout of an overmatched Syracuse squad that is too light on quality depth. Lay the points and ride Duke, guaranteed.

Result: I went all-in on this contest as my favorite game of an enormous college card once the Bagley news came in, since it helped bolster Duke's edge in quality depth over a Syracuse squad whose biggest issue all season has been finding enough bodies capable of taking the floor without being exposed. Although the Orange hung around more effectively than expected, a perfectly-timed offensive rebound allowed the Blue Devils to run out the clock on a 60-44 win despite shooting just 2-for-18 from 3-point range. This shouldn't have been that close, but a winner is a winner.

BAD BEAT BULLETIN

The pick: Wichita State -7.5

It's definitely strange to be confident in any team that has to lay points at Moody Coliseum since the Mustangs are typically so good there, but the Shockers are a road favorite for a reason here given SMU's depleted state. With Landry Shamet good to run the point after a bout with a bug, we're all in here. Ride Wichita State.

Result: With 1:37 remaining, Conner Frankamp's two free throws put Wichita up 82-65, so all we had to do was run out the clock here. Instead, SMU closed on a prideful 13-2 run, calling timeouts and everything. It looked like my winner would still survive since star point guard Landry Shamet had the ball in his hands as the final few seconds ticked away, but he was pressured unnecessarily, fumbling the ball away. SMU picked it up with 2 seconds left and was immediately fouled, making a pair from the stripe to make the final score 84-78, which matched the closest the game had been since before the second half's first media timeout Bru-tal.

TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Timberwolves/Bulls OVER 219

The Timberwolves got pretty good news with Jimmy Butler likely to return for the playoffs after being diagnosed with a meniscus tear. It could've been worse. As things stand now, the Bulls will come into town with Zach LaVine in a groove, Kris Dunn back and looking to run and a very likely big game offensively to be had. Ride the over here.

Result: A 38-point second quarter helped Chicago take a 62-60 edge into the break, so Tom Thibodeau got his team's attention and rode an efficient night from Andrew Wiggins and a spark from Jamal Crawford off the bench to a 62-42 second-half run. Garbage time was kind, as Bulls guard Cameron Payne's 3-pointer with 37.8 left delivered a winner. The Wolves won 122-104.

UPSET CITY

The pick: Green Bay +2.5

The Titans should never be favored and are only laying points for the fourth time this season. Although 2-1 straight up in those games, Detroit has only covered once and will face a Phoenix squad that just comes off an upset at Oakland. Ride Green Bay and take the points.

Result: The Phoenix led 61-36 at halftime and survived what was essentially an entire second half of garbage time to win 107-97.

CARDIAC ATTACK

The pick: Notre Dame PK, Wake/ND OVER 145.5

The Irish are likely to get Bonzie Colson back soon and will need to string together wins to rescue the season. Wake Forest is prone to miscues and has routinely disappointed the fan base, so this is certainly a game the Irish can come into Winston-Salem and steal. Back Notre Dame and the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: This was certainly my favorite cover, helping atone for that awful Wichita/SMU nonsense since my in-game parlay came in under the most unlikely of circumstances. Wake led 69-60 at the under-eight, but was held scoreless for over 4 minutes as the Irish made their comeback. Both teams failed to put up a single point until Matt Farrell's immense 3-pointer with 5 seconds left, but we were still short on the total until Wake failed to get the inbounds pass in safely. Irish center Martinas Geben closed out a 22-point, 14-board night by stealing the pass when it was thrown directly into his body. He was then fouled and buried both free throws in a 76-71 win.

LATE NIGHT SNACK

The pick: UC-Irvine +1.5, Hawai'i/UC-I UNDER 132.5

Between the Anteaters being able to lock down defensively and the Warriors known for having trouble putting the ball in the basket, we should expect to see a tight, low-scoring game in Honolulu. Russell Turner's team is again fantastic on defense, which should lead to a victory. Ron UC Irvine and the under for the in-game parlay.

Result: The Anteaters controlled the pace and locked down successfully enough that even a late push didn't create too much concern as they posted a 66-57 win, sweeping the night's final wager. We also got to see popular senior walk-on Zach Buscher throw an inbounds pass alley-oop through the net as a late bonus. That's not a common occurrence.

SWING AND A MISS

The pick: Trail Blazers -6.5

The Suns are the worst team in pro basketball, so even though they should be commended for not dropping their heads in completing last night's game against the Clippers by demonstrating some pride, the fact they got down 19-0 should tell you all you need to know. Coming off a big upset over Utah that ended its 11-game winning streak, look for the Trail Blazers to continue their steady play. Lay the points and ride Portland.

Result: Damian Lillard rescued the Blazers in a 106-104 win, but Devin Booker's exploits ensured this never became the blowout I expected. This was the lone blemish of my nine Saturday NBA selections.

PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: Warriors -10, GSW/OKC UNDER 234

Now that Draymond Green is officially good to go despite his shoulder issue, expect the Warriors to squash all doubts in this nationally televised showcase, getting revenge for a pair of lopsided defeats in their first encounters with the new-look Thunder. Ride Golden State -10 and the under for the in-game parlay

Result: The Warriors held Paul George to 0-for-9 shooting in the first half. He and Russell Westbrook finished a combined 5-for-29. The Warriors closed on a 42-14 run that began when they scored the third quarter's final 14 points. In winning 112-80, this was the easiest cover in these national NBA Saturday night showcase games we've seen yet.

FURTHER PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: Virginia -18.5

Kevin Stallings knows his team has little chance of competing here, but the key to limiting the carnage is to limit possessions by being extra cautious with the ball, working clock and attacking late in the clock. It seems perfectly conducive to a game the Cavs should be able to hold Pittsburgh under 45 in. They'll win this by 20-plus since they've improved offensively. Ride Virginia

Result: Virginia held Pitt to just seven first-half points and completely controlled the pace in a 66-37 win that was slightly annoying only because I was leaning towards playing the under too but held back once it dipped to 116.

Spurs end four-game skid with 110-94 victory in Cleveland
February 25, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) LaMarcus Aldridge scored 27 points, Danny Green added 22 and the San Antonio Spurs ended their annual ''rodeo'' road trip by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 110-94 on Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak.

Green, who missed Friday's loss at Denver with food poisoning, came off the bench for the first time in 49 games this season. He made five 3-pointers to provide a perfect outside complement to Aldridge's dynamic inside game. Dejounte Murray added 13 points and nine rebounds for San Antonio, a team not accustomed to any turmoil.

But the Spurs have not been themselves lately while playing without star Kawhi Leonard. They had dropped six of seven and four in a row on a trip (their arena hosts a rodeo every year) that coach Gregg Popovich's squad typically uses as a spring board into the playoffs.

LeBron James had 33 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists for the Cavs, who fell to 3-2 since overhauling their roster with three trades.

ROCKETS 119, NUGGETS 114

DENVER (AP) - James Harden had 41 points and eight rebounds, Chris Paul scored 23 points and Houston beat Denver for its 12th straight victory.

Harden had 27 in the first half and seven in the fourth quarter, when the Rockets held off a late Denver rally. Harden has scored 40 or more points nine times this season. He finished with seven assists.

Nikola Jokic had 21 points and 14 rebounds for Denver, which had its four-game winning streak snapped. Will Barton added 25 points.

The Rockets are 21-4 since Dec. 29 and own the best record (46-13) in the NBA. They are outscoring teams by an average of 12.5 points during the 12-game winning streak. The five-point win Sunday was their closest game during the streak.

PELICANS 123, BUCKS 121, OT

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jrue Holiday scored 28 of his 36 points after halftime to lead New Orleans over Milwaukee in overtime.

Holiday added nine rebounds and six assists for New Orleans, which held on for its season-high fifth win in a row when Jason Terry's 3-pointer was ruled after the buzzer.

Anthony Davis, who entered the game as the league's third-leading scorer (27.7 ppg), added 27 points and 13 rebounds.

The Pelicans trailed by 18 early in the second half but outscored Milwaukee 38-19 in the third quarter.

Khris Middleton scored 25 points for the Bucks. Giannis Antetokounmpo, the No. 2 scorer in the NBA (27.8) and Eric Bledsoe each added 20, but the Bucks lost for only the fourth time in the last 14 games and fell to 9-26 all-time against New Orleans.

WIZARDS 109, 76ERS 94

WASHINGTON (AP) - Otto Porter scored 24 points, Bradley Beal added 23 and Washington had a dominant second quarter in a victory over Philadelphia.

Kelly Oubre scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half to help fourth-place Washington move a half-game ahead of Indiana in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Wizards improved to 9-3 in an extended stretch without All-Star point guard John Wall (knee surgery).

Joel Embiid had 25 points and 10 rebounds for Philadelphia, which dropped a half-game behind Milwaukee into seventh place and two back of Washington in the congested East standings.

HORNETS 114, PISTONS 98

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Dwight Howard had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Kemba Walker added 17 points and Charlotte beat Detroit for its season-best fourth straight win.

The Hornets improved to 27-33 while making a push toward the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference for the playoffs. The Pistons have 28 wins, and there are eight teams in the conference with at least 31 victories.

Seven Charlotte players scored in double digits, and the Hornets' bench outscored Detroit's reserves 51-28.

Blake Griffin led the Pistons with 20 points on 10-for-18 shooting, while Andre Drummond had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Detroit has lost five of six.

Pop supports LeBron's courage to speak
February 25, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich hopes LeBron James never stops speaking up.

Long an admirer of Cleveland's superstar, Popovich praised James for his activism and for being a role model to ''millions'' of kids. Popovich also defended James' right to speak after he was recently criticized by Fox News commentator Laura Ingraham, who said the NBA's most high-profile player should ''shut up and dribble'' after he criticized President Donald Trump.

''To me, when I heard about that, it was just an unbelievable show of arrogance for a talking head to try and tell someone else if they can speak, what they can speak about and when and where to do it,'' Popovich said before the Spurs faced James and the Cavaliers. ''It's just ludicrous, but to not have a feel for who this guy is.

''I mean, think about when he came into public view, how young was he? And to this day he hasn't missed a step, he hasn't fallen off the ledge and he's been a brilliant example for millions of kids, especially kids with lesser opportunity and haven't had the same advantages as others.

''They see in this guy somebody who has consistently exhibited excellence in the workplace and gives them a voice and lets them know that you can speak about anything.''

James and Popovich have developed a strong bond during their years together, facing each other three times in the NBA Finals. Popovich also was an assistant coach when James played on the 2004 U.S. Olympic team.

Popovich shrugged off his links to James.

''His career is way bigger than he and Pop,'' Popovich said with a laugh. ''There's a great respect that goes both ways, for sure. I love the guy. But I guess we've both been around for a while and competed a few times and we've each won and lost. But it's never been an individual sort of thing. He's always been a team guy and hopefully I'm the same way.''

Following San Antonio's 110-94 win over Cleveland, James said he appreciated Popovich's words. He also intends to remain vocal about his beliefs.

''For me as an athlete and for me as a role model, I just try to do my part to help these kids and the youth understand how important their lives are and they can become anything in this world,'' James said. ''No matter the negativity that may be going on around them, there's always a brighter side. For me, while I have this platform, I will continue to do that and continue to lend my voice and lend my spirit and lend my inspiration to these kids, because I know exactly what they're going through because I was one of them at one point in time not too long ago.

''Pop is definitely one of my all-time favorite people that I've ever crossed paths with in my life.''

Popovich said he's never been around a player like James, who doesn't seem to be showing any signs of slowing down at 33. And while Popovich marvels at James' physical gifts, he's more impressed by how the four-time MVP carries himself off the floor.

James has had a major impact in Northeast Ohio with his community efforts. His foundation has supported kids in the Akron area to attend college tuition free, which is why Popovich was so put off by Ingraham's remarks.

''It's kind of like the `Black Panther' movie,'' Popovich said. ''How cool is that for kids to see that, to have that superhero? Well, LeBron's been that for a long time. For somebody to be totally numb to that and attack him in such a childish way really speaks more volumes about that individual than it does LeBron. He's very, very special. We should all be very proud that we have someone like that who's willing to speak about a variety of topics and you listen to them all.''

Quote of the Day

?We think we have a better draft when we?ve had an opportunity to see these young players play at an elite level before they come into the NBA. On the other hand, I think the question for the league is: In terms of their ultimate success, are we better off intersecting with them a little bit younger? Are we better off bringing them into the league when they?re 18, using our G League as it was designed to be, as a development league, and getting them minutes on the court there??

Monday?s List of 13; Wrapping up a sports weekend

13) I?m still kind of wondering how Aaron Boone lands a job managing a major league baseball team in New York City, when he has never managed anywhere before, ever.

Dealing with the NYC media is a task in itself; maybe I question that part of it more than the actual X?s and O?s of baseball, which I?m sure Boone will handle just fine.

Same thing goes for Davey Martinez in Washington, who are expected to make the playoffs again this season. Wouldn?t you want a more experienced guy to handle a really good team?

12) One of the best parts of March is that there is almost constant baseball on TV, mostly replays of spring training games from earlier in the day. Season is starting earlier this year, so exhibition games started earlier too. Excellent.

It does bug me when TV guys appear bored to have to work these games. I know they don?t mean anything, obviously the real games aren?t for another month, but John Kruk on the Phillies? TV games is a big disappointment, and FP Santangelo on Nationals? game is like an 8-year old with a live microphone. Its your job, pretend you care about doing it well.

11) New Mexico 91, UNLV 90- Very fun game to watch; Rebels were only 4-7 on arc, 28-40 on foul line. Very bitter loss when you miss 12 foul shots and lose by one. #10 on New Mexico hit the game-winning 3-pointer; he is 31-61 on the arc for the season.

On New Mexico?s last possession, UNLV took freshman star McCoy out and put Diong in, because Diong is a better defender. When McCoy is deciding whether or not to go to the NBA this spring, the fact that his team takes him out on defense on the most important possession of the game should tell him that he?ll make a lot more money (eventually) if he stays in school for another year and gets bulkier/stronger before he gets drafted into the NBA.

10) Duke beat Syracuse 60-44 Saturday night, but were just 2-18 on arc against Syracuse?s 2-3 zone. Blue Devils had been 30-72 on the arc in their previous three games.

9) Last year, the Dodgers played only 45 games where their starting pitcher was working on 4 days? rest, the fewest in the majors. Next fewest were Bronx (53), Astros/Padres (64) and the Nationals (67).

8) Red Sox/Tampa Bay play 10 times before May 1st this season; Boston TV guys were pretty much assuming on air Saturday that the Red Sox will kick their butts and get off to a fast start this season. Tampa Bay dumped a lot of its better players this winter.

7) There are 15 big league teams training in Arizona, 15 in Florida, so at least one team has to play split squad games every day, to even the schedule out.

6) Logan Morrison turned down $20M for two years from the Indians, winds up signing a 1-year, $6.5M deal with Minnesota that best-case, could become two years, $16.5M. Brilliant!!!!

5) Houston 109, East Carolina 58? Houston led this game 62-13 at halftime. East Carolina will be hiring a new coach soon; sounds like it is a difficult rebuilding job.

4) Unfortunate news from the WCC: San Diego Toreros are having a terrific season this year at 18-12, finished .500 in WCC for first time in 10 years, but coach Lamont Smith was arrested at the Oakland Airport Sunday on three counts of domestic violence.

3) Championship Week is actually two weeks and it starts tonight with the Atlantic Sun tournament being played at campus sites. Florida Gulf Coast is favored to win the tournament.

2) One of the most interesting bubble teams for March Madness is Nebraska; they?re 22-9, 13-5 in Big 14, but the league is down this year and the Cornhuskers? non-conference schedule is #281, which makes them likely to miss the NCAA tournament.

Lot of interesting debate on Twitter about Nebraska; no one has ever been 13-5 in the Big 14 and missed the NCAA?s. Until maybe now.

1? Sunday night in Iowa City, Jordan Bohannon intentionally missed a foul shot, ending his streak of 34 consecutive made free throws, which was tied for the school record with Chris Street, who was killed in a snowy car accident January 19, 1993 during his junior season. Street is an Iowa legend; his parents still have season tickets to Hawkeye games.

Bohannon did this with 2:15 left and Iowa leading Northwestern 73-65 in their regular season finale. He left the shot short, off the front rim, and pointed to the sky. Pretty cool gesture.
