****************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Starting today, the first of some changes here at the website will take place.

No more daily NHL write-ups; I?ve decided to concentrate on basketball between football and baseball seasons. For now, everything else here stays the same.

12) I?m not making this up: A Pittsburgh-area family is suing Steelers? safety Sean Davis because he posted a Snapchat video about how slow the service was at the drive-thru window at a Chick-fil-A, where their son works- the son was then ?bullied? at school because of the video.

The lawsuit contains claims for libel, cyberbullying, intentional infliction of emotional distress and slander. Davis offered to invite the teenager and two friends to be his guest at a Steelers? practice, and to go to Davis? summer football camp in Washington, but the family declined.

Good grief, our country is getting soft.

11) I mentioned Sunday how Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley was going after the refs as they left the floor in Corvallis after the Sun Devils lost to Oregon State Saturday- the Pac-12 nailed him with a $10,000 fine for those shenanigans.

10) If Bronx Bombers? GM Brian Cashman is so bleeping smart, let him go be the GM of the Pirates or the Rays or the A?s and see how many freakin? games his team wins. Gets old hearing media types praise Cashman all the time? he is playing checkers with more pieces than most of his opponents- he should win. Since 2001, Cashman?s team has one World Series title, after a run of four titles in five years in the late 90?s.

9) Speaking of Tampa Bay, they may not have an excuse to be cheapskates for too much longer; Rays and Fox Sports Net are nearing a long-term extension to their broadcast deal. From CBSSports.com:

?Fox?s payout is expected to increase to around $50 million in 2019 under the new contract. Over the 15-year life of the deal, which would run through the 2033 season, Fox would pay, on average, around $82 million per year.?

8) Several NBA personnel types told ESPN?s Jeff Goodman that they would advise Missouri freshman Michael Porter Jr to play this season, rather than just sit out and wait for the NBA Draft. Porter played 2:00 in the opener and hasn?t played since because of a back problem.

7) Texas declined to sign free agent P Seung-hwan Oh because he failed his physical; Toronto then signed Oh- you wonder what the difference is in the physicals between the two teams.

6) Three US cities with the best TV ratings for the Winter Olympics: Salt Lake City, Denver and Minneapolis.

5) Former big league reliever Andrew Bailey retired from playing and will be the Angels? instant replay coordinator this season. I?m a curious guy; wonder how much that job pays?

4) Why is Russell Wilson in spring training with the Bronx Bombers? How does his presence there help them prepare for this season? Does he still get paid by the Seahawks if he tears an ACL playing baseball?

3) 20 or so years ago, I bowled in a Thursday night league; had never done it before, haven?t done it since. It was kind of fun, but I was in over my head and didn?t do very well? I didn?t even own my own bowling ball, just used an alley ball every week. But hey, I could watch college games on TV and eat pizza in between my turns.

One night, a guy on the lanes to my right bowled a 300? it was a different league, really good bowlers, and I remember how casual the guy was about bowling a 300. I was excited, I mean the guy just bowled a freakin? perfect game- couldn?t understand why he just smiled, and got ready for his next game. Best I ever did was a 212; anything over 170 was cause for celebration.

2) According to baseball-reference.com. San Francisco Giants already have $127M in salary obligations for 2020; Minnesota Twins have $0 on the books after 2019.

1? If you?re a kid in West Virginia this week, you were on an unscheduled vacation? teachers went on strike for better pay/benefits, but they?ll be back at work on Thursday.

When I was a junior in high school, our teachers were on strike when school started? problem is, teachers at two other local schools were also on strike, so the teachers would go to the other two schools and be subs to make some $$$, which kind of defeated the whole purpose.

We had a different teacher for every class every day for the whole week; it was chaotic; some kids marched to the district offices to ?protest for the teachers? ? they just didn?t want to go to class. For those lazy people like me who had no desire to walk anywhere, we just sat in class, did very little and stayed out of trouble. Good times.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
February 28, 2018

Game of the Night: Rockets (-8, 227) at Clippers ? 10:35 PM EST

The hottest team in the NBA resides in Houston as the Rockets (47-13 SU, 31-28-1 ATS) have pulled out 13 consecutive victories. Houston?s latest conquest came at Utah on Monday in a 96-85 triumph as one-point road favorites. James Harden paced the Rockets with 26 points and 11 rebounds as Houston won by scoring less than 100 points for only the second time this season. As a single-digit favorite, the Rockets improved to 13-2 ATS in the last 15 opportunities since early January.

The Clippers (32-27 SU, 34-24-1 ATS) return home following a successful 5-2 road trip, capped off by Wednesday?s comeback win at Denver. Los Angeles erased a 19-point deficit in a 122-120 triumph at Pepsi Center to cash as 7 ?-point underdogs, led by Lou Williams? 25 points off the bench. The Clippers posted 41 fourth quarter points to help pick up their fifth consecutive cover and move to 4-1 ATS in the last five chances in the underdog role.

Los Angeles has knocked off Houston twice this season, including a 113-102 victory at Staples Center as 4 ?-point underdogs on January 15. Not only was it Chris Paul?s return to L.A. to face the Clippers for the first time since getting traded in the offseason, but the two teams had several heated exchanges in the fourth quarter. Harden sat out due to a hamstring strain for Houston, who has lost in three of the past four visits to Los Angeles.

Wave the Wand

The last the Wizards and Warriors met up in Oakland in late October, Golden State edged Washington, 120-117 as 12-point favorites. However, the storyline coming out of that contest was the melee involving Golden State?s Draymond Green and Washington?s Bradley Beal, who were tangled up underneath the basket and eventually fought and were ejected. The Wizards built a 14-point halftime lead before the Warriors rallied back by outscoring Washington in the second half, 67-50.

Golden State (47-14 SU, 28-32-1 ATS) pulled away from New York on Monday, 125-111 as 12-point favorites to kick off its three-game road trip. The Warriors outscored the Knicks in the third quarter, 39-18 to move to 5-2 ATS this season as a double-digit road favorite.

The Wizards (36-25 SU, 30-31 ATS) improved to 10-3 SU/ATS since John Wall has been sidelined, while picking up their fourth straight road win on Tuesday at Milwaukee. Washington edged Milwaukee, 107-104 as three-point underdogs after building an early 21-point lead, as Beal paced the Wizards with 21 points. Since Wall has been out, Washington has beaten Toronto and Oklahoma City as home underdogs, but the Wizards have lost three of the past four matchups with the Warriors.

Central Struggles

Two Central division rivals hook up in Detroit as the Bucks and Pistons both look to get on track. Milwaukee (33-27 SU, 25-30-5 ATS) dug itself a 26-5 hole on Tuesday against Washington before rallying back to cut the deficit to two in the final minute of regulation. However, the Bucks couldn?t get over the hump in a 107-104 loss to the Wizards as Milwaukee fell to 0-5 ATS in its last five as a home favorite. The Bucks have seen more success on the road recently by winning four of the previous five contests away from BMO Harris Bradley Center, including an overtime triumph at Toronto last week.

The Pistons (28-32 SU, 26-32-2 ATS) have been absolute pointspread poison since acquiring Blake Griffin by posting a 1-10 ATS record with the All-Star forward in the lineup. Detroit has failed to cover the number in each of its past eight games, while the Pistons haven?t busted the 100-point mark in the last three losses to Boston, Charlotte, and Toronto. The home team has won each of the first three meetings, including a pair of four-point wins by the Bucks in Milwaukee. Detroit has dropped five of the past six to Milwaukee since December 2016, but four of those defeats came on the road.

Pelican Power

Houston may be running away with the Southwest division, but New Orleans is looking to make its mark in the Western Conference playoff race. The Pelicans (34-26 SU, 31-28-1 ATS) extended their winning streak to six in Monday?s 125-116 victory over the Suns, barely picking up a cover as 7 ?-point favorites. Anthony Davis continues to post ridiculous numbers for New Orleans by torching Phoenix for 53 points and 18 rebounds, the fourth time in the last six games he has erupted for 40 points or more.

The task will be tough tonight for New Orleans to keep its hot streak going with a trip to San Antonio. The Spurs (36-25 SU, 32-27-2 ATS) ended a four-game skid in Sunday?s 110-94 blowout of Cleveland as 4 ?-point underdogs. San Antonio has won nine of the past 10 home meetings with New Orleans, although the Pelicans are making their first trip to the AT&T Center this season. The Pelicans knocked off the Spurs in the first matchup this season, 107-90, while covering in each of the past three meetings.

Boston (and Charlotte) Strong

Both the Celtics and Hornets were struggling heading into the All-Star break. However, the week off jump started these Eastern Conference clubs as each time tries to extend their winning streak tonight at TD Garden. The Hornets (28-33 SU, 26-31-4 ATS) picked up their fifth consecutive victory in Monday?s 15-point triumph over the Bulls, while eclipsing the 111-point mark in all four wins since the break.

The Celtics (28-33 SU, 26-31-4 ATS) ended the first half with three straight home losses, but have rebounded by winning three consecutive games. Boston jumped out to a 26-point halftime lead over Memphis on Monday, but failed to cash as 11 ?-point favorites in a 109-98 win to drop to 0-4 ATS in the last four home contests. The Celtics have seen plenty of success against the Hornets over the years by capturing eight of the last nine matchups, including a pair of wins this season.

Fast Break

-- The Raptors travel to Orlando trying to remain hot after winning eight of their past nine games. The Magic cashed as 10-point road underdogs in Monday?s 112-105 setback at Oklahoma City, but Orlando dropped its sixth straight game. These two teams are hooking up for the first time this season as they split four games last season.

-- The Pacers had their four-game winning streak end in Dallas on Monday. Indiana heads to Atlanta seeking its third victory over the Hawks this season, coming off a 116-93 home rout last week. The Hawks are fresh off a 19-point home loss to the Lakers, their fourth straight defeat, falling to 2-5 ATS in the last seven as a home underdog.

-- Two teams that are readying for the lottery meet in Memphis as the Grizzlies host the Suns. The home squad has captured the first three meetings this season, as both Phoenix and Memphis attempt to snap a 10-game losing streak. The last time the Grizzlies won a game came against the Suns on January 29 as 8 ?-point favorites, 120-109.

-- Dallas has knocked off Oklahoma City in each of the past two meetings as the two squads hook up for the final time in the regular season at American Airlines Center. The Thunder are 3-1 in the past four games, but have covered the number only once in this span. The Mavericks own a 1-5 record in their last six games off a win following Monday?s victory over Indiana, but are 6-3 ATS in their previous nine opportunities as a home underdog.

Read the *********** mission statement here
Last night's ATS Records
NBA: 3-3 | NCAA BB: 13-9

Entering the final day in February, things are starting to get serious. Tuesday's action delivered a couple of the best college games we've seen all season with Miami and UNC trading 3-point bombs in a classic in Chapel Hill and St. Bonaventure moving closer to an NCAA Tournament bid by surviving Davidson in 3 OTs. Both sets of guarantees came in, but the freebie failed. Here is Tuesday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

WEDNESDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Nevada/UNLV OVER 164

It's Senior Night at Thomas & Mack, where they're expecting a Red Out for Senior Night for Jovan Mooring and Milwaukee transfer Jordan Johnson. Mooring is questionable but likely to play, which means we're going to see a blistering pace here. The Wolf Pack can really do damage in transition, while the Rebels should feast inside aginst Nevada's lack of size. UNLV won in Reno 86-78 to open the month and just played a 91-90 game at the Pit that they narrowly won on a putback. Consider that these teams combined for 164 in their previous meeting despite shooting a combined 15-for-49 from 3-point range. Expect this number to be topped and ride the over.

TUESDAY'S FREE SELECTION

The pick: Bulls +10.5

The Hornets have come out of the All-Star break with great purpose, running their streak of wins by 15 or more points to three games by taking care of the Wizards and Pistons. Buzz City should continue its push with a victory here, but the additional points the Bulls are getting coming in on the second night of a back-to-back may be too generous. Zach LaVine didn't play last night and will participate here, while the team's depth should give Fred Hoiberg fresh options to throw out there at Charlotte. Dwight Howard has been fantastic, but we can always count on him to leave a few points behind at the free-throw line. Either by hanging around for 48 minutes or slithering in through an open back door, I'm bullish on Chicago covering. Take the points.

Result: Chicago was even at the break and actually led briefly in the third quarter before wilting. Kris Dunn and Lauri Markkanen are definitely struggling and largely contributed to the Bulls' demise as they fell 118-103. Dwight Howard piled on by hitting 4-for-5 from the stripe.

TUESDAY'S LOCK

The pick: Nuggets/Clippers OVER 229

There's a rumor Paul Millsap is going to try to play tonight, but even if he does, it shouldn't have too large an impact here. The Nuggets are going to try and play through Nikola Jokic and get up and down the floor, while the Clippers should be able to hang with the pace since their guards aren?t particularly adept at playing defense as it is. Expect a shootout and ride the over, guaranteed.

Result: Millsap logged over 23 minutes off the bench, but couldn't prevent the Nuggets from falling 122-120 after a 41-point explosion from the Clippers in the fourth. The 73 combined points in the final quarter helped us clear this total rather comfortably, but I'd be lying if I said I expected Boban Marjanovic to help us get there by making eight of nine from the field. He came up huge, pun intended, against Jokic.

TUESDAY'S OTHER LOCK

The pick: Missouri +1.5/UNDER 144

Cuonzo Martin has seen his Tigers drop three straight, squandering a position of strength in a competitive SEC race and falling back to .500. With Michael Porter potentially returning to play a key role, putting together a strong finish could land them an NCAA Tournament berth if Mizzou can put together a strong finish. Look for desperation to play a valuable role in Nashville against a vulnerable Vandy squad that is the league's doormat this season. Ride Missouri +1.5, guaranteed. For the in-game parlay, ride the under.

Result: I noticed a lot of love given to Vandy and didn't get it. This line actually went to 2. Although the Commodores did some nice things early on the offensive end, Mizzou was able to clamp down and largely controlled its 74-66 win. Hit the under too.

BAD BEAT BULLETIN

The pick: Oklahoma State/Iowa State OVER 151.5

The Cyclones will get back Donovan Jackson after he attended his father?s funeral over the weekend, so they?ll be deeper than they have been after suffering through a lot of misfortune over the past few weeks. Considering their style of play, I just don?t see them having enough legs to hold off the Cowboys, who have beaten West Virginia in Morgantown and Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse. That means you know they won?t be by Hilton Magic in Ames, so expect a road win in a high-scoring affair. Back Oklahoma State on the money line and ride the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: The Cowboys won 80-71, coming up a point shy of where we needed this game to be in order to come through on an in-game parlay. Oklahoma State led 48-43 at the break, so this looked fantastic given the projected second-half pace. Jeffrey Carroll's 3-pointer with 1:13 left made it 80-69, but the final few possessions featured the following: One layup, one missed 3-pointer, 0-for-3 free-throw shooting and two turnovers and the final 20 seconds being frustratingly dribbled out. Yuck.

TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Arkansas/Auburn OVER 161

It's tough to envision this game not featuring over 160 points since both should break the 80-point mark. Both press all game, which means that we should see whoever is trailing down the stretch resort to the foul game to extend things since it's unlikely this will be a one-possession game in which there are many lulls. Ride the over.

Result: The Hogs hit seven of their 10 3-point attempts in the first half to raced out to a 52-42 lead. Auburn shot below 35 percent for the game, but hung around enough to maintain a brisk pace in the second half. A Jared Harper jumper made it 84-78 with 3:05 left, delivering the over.

UPSET CITY

The pick: Miami +10.5

It's important for the Hurricanes to show up in Chapel Hill and not get blown out, which Jim Larranaga should be able to accomplish. He's excellent at helping his team on the road, which is why the 'Canes have won in N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. North Carolina will make their runs, but this will likely wind up closer than expected. Take the points and ride Miami.

Result: Jaquan Newton's 3-point heave helped the Hurricanes avoid a second-half collapse after Joel Berry tied the game with his own deep shot with 4.1 seconds left. Miami avoided OT in a huge 91-88 that makes it an NCAA Tournament lock, and although I don't think they would've fallen by double-digits in an extra session, it was very nice to avoid the possibility.

CARDIAC ATTACK

The pick: Heat +1

These teams are squaring off for the third time this month and will see each other again on March 8, so they'll be really good friends by then. The 76ers won both meetings in Philly, part of a 2-8 run that has tripped the Heat up and has dropped them to eighth in the Eastern Conference. They'll need Hassan Whiteside and Bam Adebayo to make Joel Embiid work, but considering they also have bodies to throw at Ben Simmons, who has been fantastic against them thus far, the Heat have enough to hold serve at home. Ride Miami.

Result: Dwyane Wade turned back the clock with a vintage performance, scoring 15 of the Heat's last 17 points in a 102-101 comeback win. The last of his 27 points came on a contested jumper with 5.9 seconds remaining, but we still weren't out of the woods until J.J. Redick came up empty on a wide-open 3-pointer that would've beaten both the Heat and our wager had he not misfired.

SWING AND A MISS

The pick: High Point -13

Longwood College is one of the worst teams I've seen all season, so considering that High Point just saw them come through town and this is a one-and-done playoff game, the Panthers will come out taking no prisoners. Jahaad Proctor averaged 19.5 points in two wins against the Lancers this season and should help put this away. Ride High Point in a convincing win in the Big South First Round.

Result: Longwood hadn't won since Jan. 15 before dominating at High Point to advance, winning 68-55. The Lancers had lost a dozen straight.

PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: St. Bonaventure ML -135, Bonnies/Davidson OVER 145

It's Senior Night for Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley, so this is going to be an incredibly difficult game for the Wildcats to pull out. Davidson handed the Bonnies their last loss way back on Jan. 19, but there has since been a 10-game run to pull Mark Schmidt's team firmly onto the NCAA Tournament bubble despite what's been a down year in the Atlantic. 10. Ride St. Bonaventure on the money line and the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: This game offers proof of precisely why I prefer money lines whenever possible. This game was fantastic, lasting three overtimes and featuring one big shot and momentum swing after another, so imagine what it would've been like if St. Bonaventure had won by just two points when it was laying 2.5 at most shops. Talk about an empty feeling after investing all that emotion watching teams trade blows for 55 minutes. The Bonnies covered when Davidson fouled with about one second left, winning 117-113 in an instant classic. Adams, Mobley and Courtney Stockard combined for 98 points. Peyton Aldridge and Kelan Grady teamed up to score 84 points for the Wildcats.

Warriors pull away in 3rd, quiet Beal to win in Washington
February 28, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) A day after taking schoolkids to a museum instead of visiting President Donald Trump at the White House, the Golden State Warriors won for the seventh time in eight games by beating the Washington Wizards 109-101 as Kevin Durant scored 32 points, Stephen Curry added 25, and Klay Thompson limited Bradley Beal to eight Wednesday night.

Durant shot 12 for 20, Thompson scored 13, and Draymond Green contributed 11 points and 11 assists.

Otto Porter Jr. led Washington with 29 points and 10 rebounds, and Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 17 on 4-of-16 shooting. Beal came in averaging a team-leading 23.7 points but he missed his first nine shots and had zero points at halftime. His first basket came with under 5+ minutes left in the third quarter.

The Wizards were again without All-Star point guard John Wall, who sat out his 14th game in a row after surgery on his left knee, but they trailed only 58-56 after two quarters Wednesday. Golden State tends to dominate third quarters, though, and this evening was no exception: It opened that period with a 16-4 run that made it 74-60 and was in control from there.

ROCKETS 105, CLIPPERS 92

LOS ANGELES (AP) - James Harden scored 17 of his 25 points in Houston's dominant first quarter, and the Rockets rolled past Los Angeles for their 14th consecutive victory.

The Rockets (48-13) matched their longest winning streak of the season and remained a half-game ahead of Golden State for the NBA's best record.

Clint Capela and Eric Gordon each scored 22 points for the Rockets, who made 13 3-pointers.

Tobias Harris led the Clippers with 24 points, with Montrezl Harrell added 22. Lou Williams and Milos Teodosic each scored 13.

PELICANS 121, SPURS 116

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Anthony Davis had 26 points and 15 rebounds, and New Orleans rallied in the final two minutes to beat San Antonio, adding to the Spurs' misery after losing LaMarcus Aldridge to an injury in the first half.

New Orleans won its seventh straight after trailing by as many as 15 points.

San Antonio, which has been without superstar forward Kawhi Leonard for all but nine games this season, lost Aldridge to a sprained right ankle late in the first half. Aldridge landed awkwardly while defending a driving hook shot by Davis with three minutes left in the second quarter.

The injury would prove critical down the stretch for the Spurs, who've lost five of their past six. The team did not immediately disclose how long Aldridge will be out.

CELTICS 134, HORNETS 106

BOSTON (AP) - Kyrie Irving scored 34 points in the first three quarters, and then sat out the fourth with the rest of Boston's starters as the Celtics routed Charlotte.

Aron Baynes had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Jaylen Brown scored 15, including nine in the third quarter as the Celtics shot 60 percent and turned the game into a blowout. Terry Rozier and Greg Monroe scored 14 points apiece for the Celtics, who won their fourth straight and ended Charlotte's five-game winning streak.

Kemba Walker made his first eight shots and led Charlotte with 23 points. Dwight Howard had 21 points for the Hornets, who were coming off a victory over Chicago on Tuesday night and couldn't keep up with the Celtics after halftime.

PISTONS 110, BUCKS 87

DETROIT (AP) - Andre Drummond had 15 points and 16 rebounds, and Detroit dominated inside in a victory over Milwaukee.

The Pistons outscored Milwaukee 56-34 in the paint and had 15 offensive rebounds in the first half alone. Blake Griffin had eight points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Detroit, which won for only the second time in eight games.

Eric Bledsoe scored 19 points for the Bucks, who have lost three straight. Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo left with 10:08 remaining in the game with an apparent injury around his right eye. He eventually walked toward the locker room.

RAPTORS 117, MAGIC 104

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 21 points and Kyle Lowry added 17 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds to lead Toronto over Orlando.

Pascal Siakam had 14 points, including 10 in the final five minutes as the Raptors pulled away for their 11th win in 13 games. Jakob Poeltl added 13 points and Fred Van Fleet had 12.

Evan Fournier and Mario Hezonja scored 17 apiece for Orlando, which has lost seven straight games. Nikola Vucevic added 14 points and Aaron Gordon had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Magic.

THUNDER 111, MAVERICKS 110, OT

DALLAS (AP) - Russell Westbrook scored 30 points, including the go-ahead three-point play in the final minute of overtime, and Oklahoma City beat Dallas.

Westbrook, who had 11 rebounds and seven assists, drove for the tying layup and made the free throw with 38 seconds left in OT to help the playoff-contending Thunder salvage a four-game split of the season series against a one-time postseason rival now among the NBA's worst teams.

Dwight Powell forced overtime at 100-all with a follow shot at the buzzer to match his career high with 21 points. It was the first points for Dallas since Powell's alley-oop dunk with 4 minutes remaining. Harrison Barnes led the Mavericks with 26 points.

HAWKS 107, PACERS 102

ATLANTA (AP) - Dennis Schroder scored seven of Atlanta's final eight points to finish with 14, and the Hawks held off a late Indiana comeback.

John Collins had 16 points for the Hawks, who led by 23 before holding on late to end their four-game losing streak.

Bojan Bogdanovic led Indiana with 26 points while making four 3-pointers in the final period. His third 3 of the period cut the Atlanta lead to 97-91. A follow shot by Domantas Sabonis, who had 14 points, pulled the Pacers to 101-99.

Schroder answered with a layup with 44 seconds remaining, and then added another driving layup following an Indiana turnover.

SUNS 110, GRIZZLIES 102

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Devin Booker scored 34 points, Josh Jackson added a career-best 29 and Phoenix snapped a 10-game losing streak by beating Memphis.

Elfrid Payton had 19 points and 10 assists for Phoenix, which won for the first time since defeating the Dallas Mavericks 102-88 on Jan. 31.

While the Suns snapped their losing streak, the misery continued for Memphis, which lost its 11th straight as the Grizzlies were winless in February.

Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Andrew Harrison scored 20 points.

2) John Calipari, Kentucky: $7,994,147

3) Chris Holtmann, Ohio State: $7,149,849

4) Bill Self, Kansas: $4,954,877

5) Tom Izzo, Michigan State: $4,359,979

6) Sean Miller, Arizona: $4,054,853

Quote of the Day

?I will never turn my back on you. EVER! You are one of the best coaches I?ve ever had and easily the best person I?ve ever come in contact with!???
TJ McConnell, talking about his college coach, Arizona?s Sean Miller

Tuesday?s quiz
Ulysses S Grant?s picture is on the $50 bill.

**************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud?..

13) St Bonaventure 117, Davidson 113, 3OT? Probably the best college hoop game this season was played Tuesday night; five players scored 30+ points. Six players fouled out. These teams are lined up to meet again in the A-14 semi-finals next week in Washington, DC.

12) Speaking of which, this is a year where several conference tournaments are in unusual places; ACC is in Brooklyn, Big 14 is in Manhattan, A-14 is in Washington, SEC is in St Louis.

11) One of the things about college basketball is that once you beat a team, you need that team to do well, so it helps your power rating.

Case in point: Boise State will be a bubble team if they don?t win the Mountain West- they?ve got a win at Oregon, so it would greatly help the Broncos if Oregon could work its way into the top 60 or even higher.

10) NIT will have some experimental rules this season; games will be four quarters, and 3-point arc will be moved out a little bit. The four-quarter thing looks like it will happen at some point in men?s basketball, maybe 2019-20? the women?s game already plays four quarters.

9) All-time major league record for pinch-hit home runs:
Matt Stairs 23, Cliff Johnson 20, Jerry Lynch 18.

Stairs is the new hitting coach for San Diego- he was the Phillies? hitting coach last year.

8) Shareef O?Neal (Shaq?s son) quickly moved on from Arizona to UCLA for his college choice.

4) Took the NFL about 90 minutes to move on from Papa John?s to Pizza Hut as official pizza of the league; best thing about this? Lot fewer Peyton Manning commercials.

7) Mark Few makes $1,934,104 a year at Gonzaga; he is happy where he is, and you can?t buy happy, but he is leaving a lot of money on the table. If Few let it be known that he wanted to be a much higher-paid coach, lot of the big-money schools would be lining up pretty quickly.

6) Chicago Bears will cut backup QB Mike Glennon after only one year and four starts; Glennon made $18.5M for his time in the Windy City, so hard to feel bad for the guy.

5) There were two upsets in the NEC tournament last night; #2-seed Mt St Mary lost to Robert Morris, and #3-seed St Francis PA lost to FDU, first time since 2003 that the #2-3 seeds both lost in the first round.

3) If you?re Sam Darnold, why wouldn?t you throw at the NFL Combine? Quarterbacks shouldn?t back away from any challenges/competition.

2) Random question: if UConn hired Geno Auriemma to be its men?s basketball coach next year, how would he do? Huskies will probably make a coaching change; their program is a mess right now, going 30-33 the last two years.

1? Someone ran a poll on Twitter the other day, asking who was the most influential teacher they have ever had. It got hundreds of responses, some of which were ?none? but it was cool to see that most people were grateful to teachers who helped them when they were younger.

Lot of time kids graduate and go on their way and never thank the people who helped them.

Preview: Lakers (26-34) at Heat (32-29)
Date: March 01, 2018 7:30 PM EDT

MIAMI -- Maybe the recent trade acquisition of shooting guard Dwyane Wade was more than just nostalgic.

Wade, who spent his first 13 seasons with the Heat -- winning three NBA titles -- returned to Miami Feb. 9 but in a diminished capacity.

No longer a star, Wade is averaging just 11.2 points -- which is, by far, the worst scoring stat of his career.

But on Tuesday night, Wade, 36, turned back the clock. He scored a season-high 27 points -- including the game-winning jump shot with 5.9 seconds left -- to help the Heat rally past the Philadelphia 76ers 102-101.

"This was the toughest shot I've had to make since I've been back," Wade said. "It felt good seeing the court the way I remember seeing it."

Wade said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has given him a lot of confidence of late.

"It started (Monday) in practice," Wade said. "(Spoelstra) gave me the ball and kept me on offense most of the day, which has never happened before. He told me to be myself. It was good to see that confidence from him and the guys.

"I'm at my best at the end of games. I'm not always going to make every shot. ... (But) it was good to be back in that position."

On Thursday night, Wade and the Heat (32-29) will play host to the Los Angeles Lakers (26-34) at AmericanAirlines Arena. The Lakers, who are in 11th place in the Western Conference, have already matched last season's win total.

The Heat, which is 16-12 at home this season, has won just three of its past 11 games overall and is clinging to the eighth and final playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

Los Angeles is 11-20 on the road, but the Lakers are playing better lately, winning three games in a row and taking seven of their past 10 contests overall.

In their most recent effort, the Lakers routed the host Atlanta Hawks 123-104 on Monday night.

Nine different Lakers scored in double figures.

"We played the right way," Lakers forward Brandon Ingram told the media after scoring a team-high 21 points. "We always talk about finding the best shot for our team and just trying to move the ball in the best way."

Indeed, three Lakers picked up at least five assists in the Hawks game -- Ingram with six and point guards Lonzo Ball and Isaiah Thomas with five each.

Ball, the second overall pick in the 2017 draft, played 24 minutes off the bench as he continues to return to form.

He missed 15 games due to a left-knee injury, and he is now playing with a minutes-restriction. He was also held out of last Saturday's game against the Sacramento Kings after playing 17 minutes the previous night against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Lakers are also fairly deep right now, which explains why veteran wing player Corey Brewer agreed on Wednesday to a contract buyout, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"I just want to play basketball," Brewer told The Times. "It's tough not to be playing. I know I can still play. ... I helped the (Lakers young) guys as much as I could. There's a lot of good guys (on the team)."

Preview: 76ers (32-27) at Cavaliers (36-24)
Date: March 01, 2018 8:00 PM EDT

CLEVELAND -- If a pro basketball game were ever to be fought over a billboard, the Cavaliers-Sixers matchup Thursday in Cleveland would be it.

This week, a Philadelphia-area business paid for three billboards in the Cleveland area recruiting LeBron James to the 76ers. James can be a free agent at season's end, and he has ties with Sixers rookie point guard Ben Simmons.

The Cavs, of course, would prefer their three-time champion and four-time MVP stay right where he is.

"You can say it's a distraction, it's not," James said. "It is actually very flattering that I'm sitting here at 33 and in my 15th year and teams or guys -- I don't want to say teams because that becomes tampering. But people in their respective city want me to play for them. That's cool I think. That's dope."

James is averaging 30 points, 13.5 rebounds and 9.5 assists in two wins over the Sixers already this season. He's coming off a month of February in which he averaged a triple-double for the entire month (27 points, 10.5 rebounds and 10.5 assists), the first time he's ever done it.

The Cavs have won 11 straight against the Sixers and 14 out of the last 15. So, yeah, one could see how Philly fans might want James.

The Sixers are in the middle of a playoff push themselves for the first time since the 2012 season. They're in seventh place in the East, four games ahead of ninth-place Detroit.

But Philadelphia has lost the last two games and six of the last seven on the road, including a tough 102-101 setback to the Miami Heat on Tuesday. Former Cav Dwyane Wade buried the game winner -- a 21-foot jumper with 5.9 seconds left.

James watched the final seconds from the Cavs' locker room, calling out Wade's steps and shot before he took them, and lamenting JJ Redick's miss at a 3 as time expired that would've won it for the Sixers.

"If we would have won those two games, I think we would have had a chance to be third or fourth in the conference," said Joel Embiid, according to philly.com. "So we have to keep the same focus and win some more games."

Third place in the East belongs to the Cavs, who beat the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday 129-123 and lead the Washington Wizards by one game.

Cleveland is trying to gain ground on Toronto and Boston with four new players added at the Feb. 8 trade deadline who have all assumed key roles on the Cavs.

In Tuesday's win, new point guard George Hill scored a season high 26 points; Jordan Clarkson added 14 points, including a clutch 3-pointer late; Rodney Hood scored 11 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter; and Larry Nance Jr. notched a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds). They closed the game alongside James.

"I just want to see what I'm working with," Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said. "I really don't know the guys that much, that well. Just want to see in big moments, pressure situations, how they perform. They performed well and they've been performing well."

The Sixers waived Trevor Booker on Wednesday and agreed to buyout his contract in order to clear space for Ersan Ilyasova, who was bought out of his deal by the Atlanta Hawks.

Ilyasova played 53 games with Philadelphia last season, averaging 14.8 points and 5.9 rebounds, before being traded to Atlanta on Feb. 22, 2017.

He averaged 10.9 points and 5.5 rebounds in 46 contests for Atlanta this season.

Preview: Nets (20-42) at Kings (18-43)
Date: March 01, 2018 10:00 PM EDT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Neither the Sacramento Kings nor the Brooklyn Nets have been caught up in the controversial conversations concerning the race by the dregs of the NBA to lose games. Yet, neither team seems capable anytime soon of winning more than just an occasional contest.

On Thursday, one of them will have to prevail. The two bottom feeders in their respective conferences face each other at the Golden 1 Center, giving each a chance to add a blip to what has seemed to be endless losing lately.

Sacramento has lost four straight at home, and Brooklyn has dropped seven straight on the road.

The Kings (18-43 and 14th among 15 teams in the Western Conference) have dropped five straight nine of their past 11 and are coming off a 116-99 defeat Tuesday in Portland. At home, Sacramento also has lost nine of its past 10 and 12 of its past 14.

Their most recent loss seemed all too familiar. The Kings' offense stagnated (44.3 percent shooting, including 7 for 22 from 3-point distance) and too often looked chaotic and without rhythm.

Sacramento averages 99 points, the second-fewest in the NBA, but has topped 100 in six of its past eight.

"The way our offense is, you're going to have the first shot, but you're going to have that again off of just three more passes," center Willie Cauley-Stein told the Sacramento Bee. "You're going to have the same play, but where they just can't stand there, and it's just like no movement and it's kind of a mess."

The Kings have committed themselves to their youth movement, which has created a pattern of fits and starts. They did some things very well against Portland, forcing 17 turnovers, 14 of them on steals. But they were undermined by the things they didn't do very well. Sacramento was outrebounded 47-36 and surrendered 52.4 percent shooting by the Blazers from the field.

The status of Kings forward Garrett Temple remains questionable. He's missed two straight games with a back injury.

The news hasn't been much better for the Nets. Brooklyn (20-42, 13th in the Eastern Conference) has dropped eight of nine, including a 129-123 decision against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday

The Nets have several issues, primary among them their rebounding. Brooklyn allows 10.3 offensive rebounds a game, the fourth-worst mark in the NBA, and opponents grab 46 per game against them overall, the league's worst.

Brooklyn is starting to get healthy. Forwards Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (14.2 points per game) and Caris LeVert (11.7 points) returned from lengthy absences Tuesday and have scored 21 and 24 points in their first two games back from a concussion and groin injury, respectively.

"I feel like I'm all the way back," LeVert told the New York Post. "As far as rhythm and everything, I'm still working my way back, especially defensively trying to be in the right spots. I know the offense will come."

Center Jahlil Okafor has missed four straight games with left calf tightness. It remains unclear whether he will play against Sacramento.

Preview: Timberwolves (38-26) at Trail Blazers (35-26)
Date: March 01, 2018 10:30 PM EDT

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Minnesota Timberwolves have gone big as they try to make up for the loss of shooting guard Jimmy Butler, who is out for at least the rest of the regular season following surgery on his right knee.

When the Timberwolves visit Moda Center for a Thursday night matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers, they will go with 6-9 Taj Gibson, 6-10 Nemanja Bjelica and 7-foot Karl-Anthony Towns on the front line along with 6-8 Andrew Wiggins and 6-2 Jeff Teague in the backcourt.

The addition to the starting lineup is Bjelica, a power forward who slides to small forward alongside Gibson, with Wiggins -- a natural small forward -- moving into Butler's normal spot.

Coach Tom Thibodeau's move is a matter of adding the next-best player to his lineup, even if it means a couple players are out of position. When Butler missed action because of a sore knee in January, Bjelica started all four games and delivered an 18-point, nine-rebound performance that helped beat the Clippers 126-118 at Staples Center on Jan. 22.

"When Jimmy went down, Belly did great for us," Taj Gibson told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "He won that Clipper game for us. He was European Player of the Year (in 2015) and he can do it all. He can dribble. He can shoot. He can put it on the floor. Belly is a talented player. I'm looking forward to him doing the job."

In their last game, a 118-100 victory over Sacramento on Monday, Bjelica -- the Wolves' best 3-point shooter at 42.9 percent -- had 12 points, including two 3-pointers, along with seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.

"We need everybody to contribute in that way," Thibodeau said. "Getting seven rebounds out of that position, and have that length, is a big plus for us. Just the threat of his shot opens up the floor, and he moves well without the ball. If you turn your head, Belly is going to cut. He gets us moving."

Bjelica, who has helped Minnesota (38-26) to a 2-0 record since Butler left the lineup, isn't going to try to do too much.

"Nobody can replace Jimmy, because he's our best player," Bjelica said. "But as a team, we can do a lot of good things. I just try to do my job."

The problem won't be at the offensive end. Minnesota scores 111.4 points per 100 possessions, third-best in the NBA behind Houston and Golden State. But the Timberwolves are 24th in defensive rating, and Butler was their best defender.

Thursday's game is a big one in the Western Conference playoff race. Portland (35-26) stands in fifth place, 1 1/2 games behind No. 3 Minnesota (38-26) and one game back of No. 4 San Antonio (36-25).

Portland coach Terry Stotts said this is the tightest playoff race, from No. 3 to 10 in the West, that he has seen in 25 years coaching in the NBA.

"There are going to be a lot of games played amongst those eight teams," he said. "That will create some separation. It may not wind up as an eight-team race, but there are going to be some interesting races no matter what happens.

"We have nine games against teams in that group (the rest of the regular season). The team that comes out with the most wins in those games is going to be in a better position. It's going to be exciting. You're going to have a lot of significant games through the remainder of the season."

Minnesota vs. Portland, Stotts said, "is one of those games.

"It's an important game for both teams It's a swing game. (The Wolves) lead the season series 2-1. It could have a lot of (playoff) implications."

Quote of the Day
?I think it would be in their best interests to know how our industry financially operates before they start working with legislators across the country on sports gaming bills. I?m not aware of any league inquiries at this time. I would like to see that change in the near future on both levels. I hope we can discuss and meet with the leagues and legislators who are considering or processing sports betting bills. I believe it would be a tremendous benefit for all of them to understand the sports gaming industry and how it operates.?

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) We?ve entered the age of ?guilty until proven innocent.?

I?m talking now about Sean Miller and the situation at Arizona, where ESPN claimed that Miller was caught on an FBI wiretap talking about an illegal payoff for star player DeAndre Ayton.

Problem is, there is no recording of this conversation, no transcript of it, and there isn?t 100% agreement on when this conversation supposedly took place, or whether the player being talked about on the tape in question was even Ayton.

So Miller remains the coach at Arizona, but if he is indeed innocent, where does he go to get his reputation back, since there will always be people that believe he broke the rules?

12) Arizona xx, Stanford xx? Allonzo Trier was cleared to play by the NCAA, so all-around, it was a solid day to be a Wildcat in Tucson.

11) Bartolo Colon pitched for the Rangers Thursday; Luis Urias was the Padres? 2B in the same game. Colon made his major league debut April 3, 1997, two months before Urias was born.

10) Other than who the Rams take, the one thing I?ll be looking for when the NFL Draft rolls around is where Louisville QB Lamar Jackson winds up. My personal opinion is that there is a place for him in the NFL, but I?m just a guy typing on his laptop.

One NFL personnel guy has to risk his career on Jackson being an NFL QB.

9) When the Cleveland Browns interviewed Alabama RB Bo Scarbrough at the NFL Combine, one of the questions they asked him was if he thought God is an Auburn fan.

What does that have to do with anything?

8) Minnesota Vikings went 13-3 this past season, their best record in 19 years, but it is likely that none of their three QB?s from last year will be on their 2018 roster.

Case Keenum had a great season, but it looks like Minnesota will let him test the free agent market; Sam Bradford?s knee is so bad that they?d be stupid to sign him- Mike Zimmer called it ?degenerative?, and Teddy Bridgewater had a non-contact injury in 2016 that he still may not be fully recovered from. All three of those quarterbacks are free agents, and all three will likely be elsewhere in a few months.

7) Bruins led Pittsburgh after the first period Thursday night; it was most goals scored in first period of an NHL game since Arizona led Nashville 6-3 after first period on March 28, 2013.

6) RB?s Saquon Barkley, Nick Chubb did 29 bench press reps at the NFL Combine.

Barkley and Chubb had more reps than all but five of the 36 offensive linemen to bench press at the Combine this year.

5) No quarterback who played at USC has ever started a Super Bowl.

QB?s from Fresno State, Arizona, Morehead State, Northern Iowa, Navy, Southern Miss and Grambling have all won Super Bowls.

4) This from covers.com:
?Nevada has seen explosive popularity in sports betting over the past decade. The annual handle rose from $2.8 billion in 2010 to $4.9 billion in 2017???
