Sunday?s 6-pack

? 1B Eric Hosmer gets $18M a year for eight years from the San Diego Padres.

? Georgetown covered six of its last seven games.

? Indiana Hoosiers are 8-0 vs spread in conference home games.

? There were no seniors on either roster in Alabama-Kentucky game. None.

? Notre Dame 84, BC 67? Matt Farrell was 10-12 on the arc for the Irish.

? Tampa Bay traded P Jake Odorizzi to the Twins for a SS prospect; they also acquired 1B CJ Cron from the Angels, and DFA?d DH Corey Dickerson- he was an All-Star LY.

Quote of the Day

?I?m incredibly proud of our players for using the platform they have as players in the NBA and on social media to speak out on issues that are important to them. And I was proud of LeBron and Kevin?s response to the comments that were made about them.?
NBA commish Adam Silver

Sunday?s quiz

Which NBA team drafted Kobe Bryant?

Saturday?s quiz

Bill Murray?s son is an assistant coach at Xavier.

Friday?s quiz

Montgomery is the capital of Alabama.

************************

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a college hoop Saturday

13) Kansas 77, West Virginia 69? Jayhawks were 26-35 on foul line, West Virginia was 1-2, in a game the Mountaineers led by 12 with 10:18 left. To say they got hosed is an understatement.

This is third straight series game Mountaineers had a double-digit lead over Kansas but lost.

12) Michigan State 66, Northwestern 60? Spartans were down 27 in first half, 22 at the half. This was one of those scores, when I saw it, thought it was a girls? score or a mistake, but then State rallies for an unlikely win.

11) South Carolina 84, Auburn 75? Tigers split their last four games after a 21-2 start. Auburn lost 6-7 McLemore, a solid rebounder, with a severe leg injury.

10) Idaho 79, Montana 77 OT? Vandals made 12-19 on arc as Grizzlies went 0-2 this weekend after starting the week unbeaten in Big Sky play. Big Sky is ranked as the 18th-best conference this year, highest it has been rated since 2010- they were 25th or lower the last six years.

9) Marquette 90, Creighton 86? Marquette lost five of its last seven games; they allowed 85-86 points in the two wins. Not a strong defensive team.

8) Villanova 95, Xavier 79? Wildcats were only 3-5 on foul line, 16-34 on arc- this is not the way to get to a Final Four? you need some kind of inside presence and production. This is obviously a good win, but unless Villanova gets more scoring inside, they?ll have a short March.

7) Upsets of the Day:
Eastern Kentucky (+11.5) 72, Tennessee State 59
Santa Clara (+9) 72, Pacific 68
James Madison (+8) 69, Towson State 66
Marquette (+7.5) 90, Creighton 86
Cal-Davis (+7.5) 71, UCSB 54
VMI (+7) 75, Citadel 71
Texas (+6.5) 77, Oklahoma 66

6) UCLA 86, Oregon 78 OT? Tough weekend in LA for the Ducks, who lost at the buzzer at USC in last game Thursday. Bruins were 16-33 on the arc; they?re a surprising bubble team.

5) There was a triple OT game Thursday and one on Friday; if you wagered against all four teams in their next game Saturday, you would?ve won three of four bets.

4) A kid on Arizona State wore one maroon sneaker, one gold sneaker in the ASU-Arizona game Thursday. A player on Alabama wore one crimson sneaker, one white one in the Tide?s loss at Kentucky Saturday. Not sure if this is a growing trend, but if it is, you know each kid has another pair of sneakers at home, just like the mismatched pair.

3) Texas 77, Oklahoma 66? Sooners lost five in row, 8 of last 10 games, as the Trey Young bandwagon is stuck in reverse. ESPN?s hype machine did this to the Ben Simmons-LSU team couple years ago; they put a target on the kid?s back by talking about him endlessly, then looked on in wonderment when the team suffers.

2) Nebraska Cornhuskers won their last six games, covered 13 of their last 14 league games.

1? Shout out to the fine folks at Albany Park & Ride; when I go to Las Vegas, often leave my car there, and they shuttle me to the nearby airport. When I come back, they have the car waiting for me in their lot and it is all very convenient, especially in winter time. Good place.

McDavid has hat trick, Oilers top Avs 4-2
February 18, 2018

DENVER (AP) Connor McDavid had his third hat trick of the season and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-2 on Sunday to snap a six-game losing streak.

McDavid has 11 goals in the last nine games and two hat tricks. His first two goals tied it, and the third was into an empty net with 1:26 left. He has five goals in two games against Colorado this season.

Ryan Strome also scored, and Cam Talbot had 24 saves to help the Oilers snap Colorado's 10-game home winning streak. Tyson Jost and Alexander Kerfoot scored for the Avalanche.

PENGUINS 5, BLUE JACKETS 2.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Riley Sheahan scored two goals in the first period and rookie Tristan Jarry made 35 saves in Pittsburgh's victory over Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2.

Jake Guentzel had a goal and two assists, and Brian Dumoulin and Zach Aston-Reese also scored for the Penguins. They have won five straight and 10 of their last 12. The win in front of a sellout crowd at Nationwide Arena moved them past Washington into first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Artemi Panarin and Alexander Wennberg scored for Columbus.

MAPLE LEAFS 3, RED WINGS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Auston Matthews scored with 30.2 seconds left to push Toronto past Detroit.

Matthews took William Nylander's pass and snapped a high shot into the roof of the net from a sharp angle for his 27th goal of the season, but just his fourth winner.

James van Riemsdyk and Mitch Marner also scored for Toronto, and Curtis McElhinney made 27 saves. Anthony Mantha and Henrik Zetterberg scored for Detroit.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Islanders playing well and out for revenge
Monty Andrews

The Islanders have allowed the most goals in the NHL by a wide margin, but are coming off back-to-back 3-0 shutout victories over the Rangers and Hurricanes.

This week we take a look at the Vegas Golden Knights who are the NHL's best moneyline wager this season and the second favorites in the futures market. Also, the Islanders travel to Toronto to take on the Leafs in what could be a potential revenge play. Monty Andrews dangles at the hash and goes bar down to give NHL bettors a breakdown of what to watch for this week on the ice.

Vegas is the Best Bet

No one could have predicted that the Vegas Golden Knights would be the top team in the NHL as of the middle of February - but that's where we are as the sensational expansion team continues to defy the odds. The Golden Knights look to continue their home-ice dominance Monday night as they entertain the Anaheim Ducks; Vegas is an incredible 22-4-2 at T-Mobile Arena, and has already beaten the Ducks in each of their first three meetings this season. The Golden Knights were a popular preseason novelty futures bet but are now going off at +700 on Bet365 to claim the Stanley Cup, the second-best odds in the league.

Battle of East Powers

Two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference face off Tuesday night in the U.S. capital as the Washington Capitals entertain the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Capitals are trying to fend off the Pittsburgh Penguins atop the Metropolitan Division, and continue to be led by the scoring exploits of NHL goals leader Alex Ovechkin. Washington enters the week a sizzling 20-4-2 SU in games in which Ovechkin scores. The Capitals also have the edge in their head-to-head series with the conference-leading Lightning, having earned three of a possible four points through their first two encounters.

Armed for Vengeance?

The New York Islanders appear to have figured out this whole goal prevention thing - and they'll look to put their new skill on display Thursday night in the second of three meetings this season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The visiting Islanders have allowed the most goals in the NHL by a wide margin, but are coming off back-to-back 3-0 shutout victories over the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes. The Isles will be looking to rebound from having been shut out themselves, dropping a 5-0 decision to the Maple Leafs in their first meeting of the season back on Jan. 31.

If you're in the market for a online sportsbook, check out in-depth reviews of the best books and sign-up bonuses at OddsShark.com.

Player News

* The St. Louis Blues are reportedly in serious talks with Ottawa about acquiring Mike Hoffman and Derick Brassard from the Senators. The Blues enter the week in a battle with Dallas for third place in the Central, and are +1,800 to win the Cup.

* The Calgary Flames have locked up a key part of their forward corps, signing winger Mikael Backlund to a six-year extension worth an average of $5.35 million per season. The Flames are 18-5-2 SU when Backlund records a point this season.

* Nashville Predators general manager David Poile says he isn't close to make a deal ahead of the trade deadline. The defending Western Conference champions are installed at +900 to win the title, the fourth-best odds in the league entering the week.

Injury Updates

* The Colorado Avalanche welcomed leading scorer Nathan MacKinnon back to the lineup Sunday after he had missed the previous eight games with an upper-body injury. The Avalanche struggled in his absence, going 4-4-0 SU and 4-4 O/U.

* The Florida Panthers also welcomed back a familiar face, as Roberto Luongo returned to the crease after a 27-game absence due to a lower-body injury. The Panthers are 7-7-2 SU in Luongo's appearances following Saturday's 6-3 win over Calgary.

* There could be real problems in goal for the Philadelphia Flyers after Michal Neuvirth left Sunday's game against the Rangers with a lower-body injury. The Flyers are already without No. 1 option Brian Elliott, who is out several weeks with a core muscle injury.

Stanley Cup Futures

* It's a two-team battle for the best Stanley Cup odds among Canadian franchises. The Maple Leafs continue to lead the way at +1,000 on Bet365, with the Winnipeg Jets a close second at +1,100 entering the week. Calgary is third at +2,800.

* The Penguins' recent hot streak has them skyrocketing up the odds list, now installed at +1,100 to win their third consecutive title. Pittsburgh is vying to become the first team since the New York Islanders in the early 80s to win three straight Stanley Cups.

Over/Under Trends

* The Metropolitan Division has been a dream for over bettors - at least when it comes to the top teams. Washington, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New Jersey and the Islanders all have at least 31 overs as of Sunday afternoon.

* The overs have been king league-wide over the previous seven days, with 27 of 45 games going above the total in that span as of Sunday afternoon. That surge makes it 446 overs on the season through Saturday's games, compared with 436 unders.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Six more baseball over/under win totals for this season:

San Francisco 81.5

St Louis, 81.5

Toronto 81

Tampa Bay 77.5

Pittsburgh 73

San Diego 69.5

Quote of the Day
?I think wide receiver. Exceptional athlete. Exceptional ability to make you miss. Exceptional acceleration. Exceptional instinct with the ball in his hand ? and that?s rare for wide receivers. This guy is incredible in the open field. Great ability to separate. Short and a little bit slight and clearly, clearly not the thrower the other guys are.?
Former NFL GM Bill Polian, on Louisville?s QB Lamar Jackson, who is 6-3, by the way

Tuesday?s quiz
How many major league baseball teams call California home?

Monday?s quiz
Baltimore Colts drafted John Elway, then traded him to Denver.

Sunday?s quiz
Charlotte Hornets drafted Kobe Bryant, then traded him to the Lakers for Vlade Divac.

*******************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) NBA should have an ?ABA Day? once a year, a Friday night with a full schedule where all the games are played with red, white and blue basketballs and the four teams who came from the ABA (Nets-Pacers-Spurs-Nuggets) wear throwback uniforms from the mid-70?s.

12) One thing I saw on the Interweb when I was in Las Vegas but forgot to mention here; when the Eagles had their victory parade after winning the Super Bowl, a guy named Dennis who was 50 or so was there watching the parade while holding a metal urn.

Turns out the urn held the ashes of Dennis? late wife, who was an avid Eagle fan.

?She was a diehard Eagles fan. I had to make sure she was here for this.? Pretty cool.

11) Pretty good weekend for golfer Bubba Watson; he played in the celebrity basketball game at the All-Star Game Friday night, then won the Genesis Open Sunday, his 10th PGA Tour win. Watson joins Phil Mickelson as the only lefties with 10+ Tour wins.

Watson?s wife played in the WNBA, therefore the connection to basketball; he lost 45 pounds last year with an undisclosed illness, dropped out of the top 100 ranking but obviously is doing better this year.

10) Bill Walton was saying on ESPN Saturday night that 27,000 people apply for the 800 spots in UCLA?s School of Engineering; you have to have a perfect 4.0 GPA to have a shot to get in.

9) St Mary?s PG Emmett Naar sprained his ankle in Portland Saturday night, didn?t play in the second half. If he cannot play, Gaels will have a short March, but one thing in their favor is the two weeks off they?ll have between the WCC tourney and the NCAA?s.

8) This from ESPN?s Tim Kurkjian:
Hank Aaron his 755 home runs but never hit 50 in a season.
Eddie Murray hit 504 homers but never hit 40 in a season.
Al Kaline hit 399 homers but never hit 30 in a season.
Ron Fairly hit 215 homers but never hit 20 in a season.

7) Memphis Tigers are last team to go undefeated in conference play two seasons in a row; they did it from 2007-09.

6) Looks like Seattle is going to get an NHL franchise; they never should?ve lost their NBA team, they got screwed over by the league because they wouldn?t be extorted into building a new arena, so the team moved to Oklahoma.

5) Six top 10 college basketball teams lost to unranked teams this past weekend. Strange season.

4) JD Martinez finally signs with the Red Sox for $22M a year for five years. Hope he can get by on that paltry sum.

3) Good news: there is spring training baseball on TV Friday. In three days.

2) How great a job is NBA commish Adam Silver doing? With all the issues the NFL had with national anthem-related issues, somehow the NBA kept all that under wraps and dodged that controversy. Has to be an interesting story behind how he did all that.

1? There are people on the Interweb who want teachers to carry guns: in 10th grade, I had a biology teacher who threw erasers at kids who weren?t paying attention (I?m old enough that I went to school when chalkboards were still a thing).

One day, the teacher throws an eraser at a kid named Nick who was screwing around, but instead he drills the girl sitting next to him, who breaks into tears as everyone else either laughed or stared in disbelief.

Would I have wanted this genius to have been packing heat? Ummmm??no.

In the Crease - Week 21
February 20, 2018

STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Arizona 4-0 past four games Chicago Under 9-2-1 past 12 home games

Montreal 2-7-1 past 10 games Vegas Over 7-1 past eight road games

Pittsburgh 5-0 past five games Washington Over 9-2 past 11 games

Home Production

The Pittsburgh Penguins enter play on Tuesday just one point behind the Washington Capitals in the Metropolitan Division. A huge part of their success this season has been their ability to win on home ice, especially since they're a rather dismal 12-15-3 away from the Steel City this season. The Pens are 23-7-1 at home, including an impressive 11 consecutive victories on friendly ice dating back to a 4-0 setback against Cam Ward and the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 4. During the span, 10 of those victories have been in regulation, with only a 6-5 victory against the Boston Bruins requiring overtime. The Pens are posting plenty of offense during the span, too, averaging 5.0 goals per game. As such, it's no surprise that the 'over' is 8-3 in the home winning streak.

Home Production - Part Deux

The Los Angeles Kings have been on a road odyssey across the East Coast, last seeing the bright lines of Hollywood on Feb. 7. They're rounding the corner and heading for home, winning a 3-1 game at Chicago on Monday night to even up at 3-3 on the seven-game trip with one last stop in Winnipeg awaiting them Tuesday night. The Kings likely can't wait to enjoy a little home cooking, as they're a solid 14-9-3 at home, and way more productive offensively at Staples Center, too. In fact, the 'over' has hit in five of their past seven on home ice. That's something to remember with the Kings back home Thursday against the Dallas Stars, kicking off a three-game homestand. They'll play eight of their next nine after Tuesday's road game, with only a quick L.A. to Vegas junket on Feb. 27 in the second of a back-to-back set.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, February 20

The Florida Panthers head to the center of the hockey universe looking to cool off the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Panthers might be just the team to do it, as they have won seven of their past nine overall, including a 5-1 mark in the past six on the road. They're also 7-1 in their past eight against Atlantic Division foes. However, they're playing in the third of a four-game stretch, as they're 1-4 in their past five in the third game of a 3-in-4 situation. They're also 1-5 in their past six against teams with a winning overall mark. The Leafs are 6-0 in their past six at home, and 6-1 in the past seven. However, they're also in the third game of a 3-in-4, and they're just 14-38 in their past 52 in the stiuation. The home team has won five of the past six meetings in this series.

The Sharks make their way to St. Louis looking to get on track. While they have won four of their past five, they're just 1-6 in their past seven against Central Division foes, and 1-9 in their past 10 on the road against teams with a home winning percentage over .600 or better. They Blues aren't terribly impressive lately, either, winning just twice in the seven against winning teams while going 2-6 in their past eight against Pacific Division clubs. With both teams performing poorly against the opposition, perhaps the total is the play. The 'under' is 15-7-2 in the past 24 meetings in the Lou.

Wednesday, February 21

It's a light night in the NHL on Wednesday, with just three games on tap. The Vegas Golden Knights are looking to bounce back on home ice against the visiting Calgary Flames after a 2-0 shutout loss against the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night. It was just the third time the expansion team was shut out this season, and only the second time on home ice. These teams have met just once, with the Golden Knights coming away with a 4-2 win on the road back on Jan. 30. Calgary lost 2-1 in overtime to Boston on Monday, and perhaps a Vegas trip will do them some good. The Flames are 8-2-1 across their past 11 on the road.

The New Jersey Devils have been teetering on the cut line for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference in recent weeks, but they rattled off four straight wins from Feb. 13-18 to give them a little breathing room, including a key 3-2 win at Carolina on Sunday in overtime. In past years it was all about defense and goaltending for the Devs, but lately it is all about offense. They are averaging 4.3 goals per game during their winning streak, and the 'over' has hit in five of the past six outings overall heading into Tuesday. The Wild have been impressive on the road lately, winning three of the past four, doing a little better away from home. The 'over' is also 4-1 across their past five on road ice.

The Avalanche and Oilers will tangle in Northern Alberta, and Colorado is looking to return the favor after losing to Edmonton 4-2 on home ice Sunday. The last time the Avalanche visited Edmonton they came away with a 4-3 victory in overtime behind Jonathan Bernier. This season has been the closest between these two sides, as the Oilers swept the three-game season series in 2016-17, and the Avalanche broomed the Oil in three games during the 2015-16 campaign.

Friday, February 23

The Hurricanes have been a thorn in the side of the Penguins lately, winning two of the three meetings this season, including 4-0 on Jan. 4 in the Steel City, the last loss for the Pens at home in 12 tries. The teams have met just once at PNC Arena in Raleigh this season, and it was the Hurricanes coming away with a hard-fought 2-1 win behind Cam Ward on Dec. 29. He has allowed just two goals in three meetings against the Pens this season, going 2-1-0 with a stellar 1.35 GAA and .951 save percentage.

Saturday, February 24

The Bruins and Maple Leafs tangle in Toronto in a key Atlantic Division game on Hockey Night in Canada. The Leafs are looking to avenge a 4-1 setback in Beantown on Feb. 3, as Tuukka Rask was nearly unbeatable. However, the Maple Leafs led the season series 2-1, and they swept a home-and-home back on Nov. 10-11, including a 3-2 overtime victory on home ice in the first battle. The 'under' is 3-0 in the three meetings this season, and 6-0-1 in the past seven meetings overall. The 'under' is also 3-0-1 in the past four battles at Air Canada Centre.

The Ducks and Coyotes will face off in the desert, and Arizona is proving they're not the same pushover they were earlier in the season. Arizona has won four in a row entering play on Tuesday, and they're allowing just 1.0 goals per game during the impressive span. They're also a respectable 5-3-3 across their past 11 on home ice. The sides last met on New Year's Eve on the Pond, with the Ducks coming away with a 5-2 win behind John Gibson. He actually suffered a lower-body injury in Vegas on Monday, so it's uncertain if he'll be ready. Ryan Miller is just as capable, however, as he came on and stopped 20 shots in the final period to preserve the shutout win. The Ducks won the first meeting of the season, also on home ice, by a 5-4 margin on Opening Night back on Oct. 5.

Bryce Harper, who is a free agent after this season

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Last time an NFL team was sold, the Buffalo Bills went for $1.4B; when the Carolina Panthers are sold, they?re expected to go for around $2B.

A billionaire hedge fund trader who currently owns 5% of the Pittsburgh Steelers is the favorite to buy the Carolina team.

12) Josh Donaldson is a free agent after this season and he naturally wants a long-term deal from Toronto, but he?ll be 33 in December and he ain?t going to get one. Teams are looking at back-loaded deals that ARod, Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols got and they?re not going to be tossing that kind of money around anymore.

11) Gonzaga won its last nine first round games in the NCAA tournament; last time they lost a first round game? To Davidson in 2008; Davidson had a pretty good guard named Curry.

10) Big 14 tournament is a week earlier than normal this year because it is in New York City, so those teams that make the NCAA?s will have an extra week before the tournament begins. Will it be an advantage to have that extra week off? Gonzaga coach Mark Few says that it is good for his team to have some time off before the NCAA?s.

9) Middle Tennessee State?s basketball team is ranked in the top 25 for the first time ever.

8) Los Angeles Angels lowered their fence in right-center field from 18 feet to 8 feet high.

7) Kentucky 87, Arkansas 72? Razorbacks jumped out to an 11-0 lead, but Kentucky rallied for a solid road win.

6) Citadel 84, East Tennessee State 82? Not often a 20-point underdog wins, but it happened here.

5) Ole Miss 90, Missouri 87? Mizzou was favored by 9.5 points, first time in four years they were favored by 9+ points in a conference game. It didn?t go well against an Ole Miss squad that had lost seven games in a row coming in.

4) New Mexico 119, Wyoming 114? Zero defense was played in this game, but there was a lot of fouling? 81 free throws were taken in this game.

3) This is first time since 2011 there will be no teams who go unbeaten in conference play.

2) With spring training starting, that also means fantasy baseball season is underway. I?ve had Giancarlo Stanton on my dynasty league team since he was an 18-year old in the Florida State League. I got a trade offer this week; two minor leaguers for Stanton, who hit 59 HR?s last year.

Oy.

1) With March Madness around he corner, it bears repeating that the last five college basketball national championship games were all decided by 6 or fewer points.
