Bet the 2018 Stanley Cup Futures Now

The New Jersey Devils have struck first on what?s expected to be a very busy NHL trade deadline, and moves on the horizon could have titanic impacts on the 2018 Stanley Cup futures board. What does that mean for you? Well it suggests that some teams have the best possible value right this minute.

Here?s a look at the top five teams on this board and how their odds might shift in the coming days.

The deadline drops on Monday, February 26th.

Pittsburgh Penguins +600 in 2018 Stanley Cup Futures

Pinning Pittsburgh?s incredibly consistent play lately is a bit difficult. It?s not all Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel and Sidney Crosby but having that lineup is lethal. They do everything remarkably well, and are world beaters when it comes to the power play, notching scores on 26.5 percent of their chances. We all sort of overlooked Pittsburgh last year, but it?s obvious that they?ve repackaged themselves to gun after that elusive three-peat. It?s been 35 years since the Islanders won back-to-back-to-back Stanley Cups. The Pens are as good of a bet as any. Experience matters in the post season, and Crosby is feeling the pressure of cementing his legacy.

Tampa Bay Lightning +600 in 2018 Stanley Cup Futures
The Lightning are absolutely poised for a solid run. They have the best offence in the league, the second best power play and a top-10 defence that allows a few too many shots on goal but is otherwise stalwart. They are everyone?s favorite team to win the Stanley Cup this year and for good reason. A great blue line, two top-5 players in Stamkos and Kutcherov and an exciting playing style. Tampa is also in a position to make a tectonic move at the trade deadline, and if they add yet another blue liner to the mix they are absolutely the team that can give Pittsburgh a solid run. Tampa?s odds, unlike Pittsburgh?s, could lower as of next week if they make a strong deadline trade.

Boston Bruins +800 in 2018 Stanley Cup Futures

If defence wins championships then look no further than the Bruins. With just 2.4 goals against per game, the Bruins lead the league in almost every important defensive metric. They are being passed over for the ?sexier? picks like Tampa and Toronto but their odds are reflective of a true contender. Betting on +800 odds at this time of year is an outstanding value play for a team that has dropped just 15 games all season.

Toronto Maple Leafs +1200 in 2018 Stanley Cup Futures
Despite a recent injury to Auston Matthews, the Leafs are in prime position for a strong playoff run. One of the reasons that guys like me are saying that is that they?ve shed some much needed salary cap room and two roster spots for a big trade. The rumors have suggested that Toronto-area Rick Nash is supposed to be incoming. But smarter heads might prevail.

Toronto desperately needs to shore up their blue line and there are some really attractive targets out there for them that could be relatively cheap. The easiest acquisition could be Mike Green, a defenseman with plenty of playoff experience who is on an expiring deal with the Detroit Red Wings who appear to be clearing house for this season.

That isn?t to say that Toronto is a lock. They?re the team of the future, but they aren?t the team right now. It?s still hard to lean away from a team so deep and so talented, but youth tends to struggle in the post season and this franchise is also cursed when it comes to the playoffs. The value is there for a reasonable lob play on your behalf if you want it. This is the time to bet these odds if they tickle your fancy.

Vegas Golden Knights +700 in 2018 Stanley Cup Futures
There?s been no better story in the NHL this year than the island of misfit toys down in the valley storming to win the most games (and points) by an expansion franchise. Oddly enough, the storybook chapters for the Golden Knights have them positioned as the top team in the Western Conference which makes absolutely no sense given how this team was mashed together. I love it so damn much. Only the Nashville Predators at +1000 have odds that equal that of the Golden Knights, and if the edge goes to experience than you have to take the defending Western Conference Champions. But momentum is literally everything in the NHL playoffs. Unlike their eastern counterparts in this market, Vegas has just one real opponent to deal with?and they can absolutely punch up Nashville in a series.

Did I forget your favorite NHL team? Well then head to the NHL futures to scope out what their odds are and bet away! The Betonline.ag daily NHL lines are also the most competitive in the industry!

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six top prospects for the Boston Red Sox:

1) Jay Groome, P? When your #1 prospect has a 3-9 career record, that says a lot.

2) Michael Chavis, 3B? Hit .250 in 67 games in the Eastern League LY.

6) Darwinzon Hernandez, P? Three years in, hasn?t escaped A-ball yet.

7) Sam Travis, 1B? Ht .263 in 76 big league AB?s last season.

20) Hector Velasquez, P? Had 2.92 ERA in 25 big league IP last season.

23) Brian Johnson, P? Struck out 21 batters in 27 big league IP last year.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Oregon 89, Arizona 83 OT? Most intense regular season college basketball game I?ve seen in years; Arizona was out to win for its suspended coach, with an us-against-them mentality, but they ran out of gas in overtime, and lost despite 28 points, 13 rebounds from Deandre Ayton.

Sean Miller has a weird contract at Arizona; he gets $10.3M if he is fired for cause, but only $5.15M if he is fired without cause. Either way, if Arizona fires him because of this mess, he ain?t gonna have to work anymore.

With all this FBI stuff going on, will the IRS go after the families who took payoff money and didn?t pay taxes on it? If coaches are losing their jobs, I hope they do go after the families.

12) Shaquille O?Neal?s son is a big time high school recruit this year who had committed to play at Arizona. He de-committed Saturday, which is probably good news for LSU, Shaq?s alma mater.

11) Virginia 66, Pitt 37? Halftime score: Virginia 30, Pitt 7. I?m not making that up. 30-7. Pitt was 1-22 from the floor in the first half. One basket, 22 shots. No bueno.

Sean Miller is a Pitt alum and from the Pittsburgh area. You wonder if they would hire him once Arizona shows him the door, which could happen soon. Given Arizona?s NCAA troubles, probably not.

10) Kansas 74, Texas Tech 72? Jayhawks clinched at least a tie for their 14th consecutive Big X title, which is extremely impressive. Don?t think they had the best team in the league this year but that does not matter, since they?ve won the most games.

9) Creighton 89, Villanova 83 OT? The huge grin Creighton coach Greg McDermott wore in the last few seconds of this game said a lot; the Bluejays are going to the NCAA?s.

Villanova split its last six games; they?ll be a shaky #1 seed when NCAA tournament brackets come out in two weeks.

8) If you read this space regularly, you know I?m a big fan of the Showtime series Billions. Learned last night that Paul Giamatti, the actor who plays prosecutor Chuck Rhoades, is the son of the late baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti.

Has to be a way they can work Pete Rose into an episode to bust Chuck?s chops.

7) William & Mary 114, Charleston 104 OT? Cougars scored 1.30 ppp and lost, which almost never happens. Teams combined to shoot 21-47 on arc. W&M blew a 16-point second half lead but made 33-38 on the foul line.

If seeds hold in CAA tourney, these teams would meet in the semifinals.

6) So far this season, 105 of 351 D-I teams have taken 40%+ of their FGA?s from behind arc; eight years ago, only 33 teams took 40% of their shots behind the arc.

279 of 351 teams have taken 33.3% of their shots behind the arc; eight years ago, only 149 teams did. College basketball has largely become a 6-6 and under sport.

The increase in 3-pointers means more long rebounds, more loose balls? success in shooting 3-pointers is tough to sustain from game-to-game. It creates hugely erratic performances from more and more teams. Makes the sport much harder to handicap.

5) Oregon State 79, Arizona State 75? Beavers led by 9 with 2:36 to go, ASU tied it with about a minute left, but never scored again. Bobby Hurley was going off on one of the refs as the game went off the air. Sun Devils are 7-9 in the Pac-12, after a 12-0 pre-conference mark- they have no inside game, and their guards played lot better in December than they are now.

4) Seton Hall 81, St John?s 74 OT? Red Storm played six guys in an overtime game; four of their five starters played more than 40:00? their only sub played 23:00.

3) Jacksonville Jaguars gave QB Blake Bortles a 3-year, $54M contract, so they?re out of the market for a new quarterback.

2) Upsets of the Day:
Wyoming (+9.5) 78, Fresno State 68
Creighton (+7.5) 89, Villanova 83 OT
Tenn-Martin (+7) 72, SE Missouri 66
Indiana State (+6) 66, Bradley 64
Valparaiso (+5) 69, Drake 64
Arkansas (+5) 76, Alabama 73
Louisville (+4) 75, Virginia Tech 68

1? Baseball streak that will never, ever be topped; in 1980, Oakland?s Rick Langford threw 22 straight complete games, one of which went 14 innings. He went 19-12, 3.26 for the season in 35 starts, throwing 290 innings.

Bruins acquire Nash in multiplayer trade with Rangers
February 25, 2018

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) The Boston Bruins continued solidifying their playoff push by acquiring forward Rick Nash in a mutiplayer trade with the Rangers that leaves New York retooling for the long-term future.

The Bruins won the Nash sweepstakes by acquiring the 33-year-old forward in a deal on Sunday, a day before the NHL's trade deadline.

The Rangers acquired the Bruins' first-round pick in this year's draft as well as forwards Ryan Spooner and Matt Beleskey, defenseman Ryan Lindgren and a seventh-round pick in the 2019 draft.

Nash has topped 30 goals in eight of his 15 NHL seasons and joins a Bruins team that ranks third in the Eastern Conference standings with 82 points. Nash is in the final year of his contract and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

The Bruins play at Buffalo on Sunday and are coming off a 4-3 loss at Toronto on Saturday night.

Nash is traveling to join the Bruins and will be eligible to play.

This marked the second trade between the two teams this past week. On Tuesday, the Bruins acquired veteran defenseman Nick Holden for prospect Robbie O'Gara and a draft pick.

For the Rangers, trading Nash further signals their plans to overhaul the aging core of a roster that helped New York make the playoffs in each of the previous seven seasons, including the team that lost the 2014 Stanley Cup Final in five games to Los Angeles.

The Rangers are slipping out of playoff contention in going 5-16 in their past 21 games since Jan. 7, and have lost six straight in preparing to host Detroit on Sunday.

Adding the Bruins' first-round pick gives the Rangers nine selections in this year's draft, including six in the first three rounds.

New York might not be done dealing with captain Ryan McDonagh also considered to be on the trading block.

And with Nash off the market, the focus of trade attention also turns to whether Sabres forward Evander Kane and Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson will also be dealt by Monday afternoon.

Kane has already acknowledged he expects to be traded, and was held out of Buffalo's 5-1 loss at Washington on Sunday.

The Rangers took the same approach with Nash by having him sit out their previous two games to avoid the possibility of getting injured.

Nash has 18 goals and 28 points in 60 games this season. He was selected by Columbus with the No. 1 pick in the 2002 draft and played his first nine seasons with the Blue Jackets before being traded to the Rangers in a multiplayer deal in July 2012. Overall, he has 434 goals and 799 points.

The Rangers saluted Nash following the trade by posting a note on their Twitter account by thanking him for ''6 memorable years as part of the New York Rangers family. ... Once a Ranger, always a Ranger. We salute you!''

The 26-year-old Spooner has 41 goals and 142 points in 252 NHL games since being selected by Boston in the second round of the 2010 draft. Lindgren was selected by Boston in the second round of the 2016 draft and currently is playing his sophomore season at the University of Minnesota.

Spooner is expected to make his Rangers' debut against Detroit.

Beleskey has 10 seasons of NHL experience, including the past three with Boston. He had no points in 14 games with Boston before being demoted to the minors in December.

Oilers trade D Davidson to Isles
February 24, 2018

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) The Oilers traded defenseman Brandon Davidson to the New York Islanders for a 2019 third-round draft pick Saturday.

Davidson, 26, has three goals and two assists in 36 games with Edmonton and the Montreal Canadiens this season.

Davidson, a 2010 sixth-round draft pick by Edmonton, was waived by Montreal in December before being claimed by the Oilers.

Davidson has appeared in 137 regular-season NHL games, with eight goals and 12 assists with 59 penalty minutes. He has also played in three playoff games.

Monday?s 6-pack

Six top prospects for the Chicago Cubs:

1) Aramis Ademan, SS? Still only 19; he hit .262 in his first two years of A ball.

4) Victor Caratini, C? Hit .254 in 59 big league AB?s last summer.

5) Alex Lange, P? Went 30-9 in three years pitching for LSU.

9) Jen-Ho Tseng, P? Went 6-1, 1.80 in nine AAA starts LY.

12) David Both 2B/3B? Versatile guy hit .270 with 14 HR?s in Southern League LY

30) Jake Stinnett P? Maryland alum is a converted third baseman.

Quote of the Day

?We think we have a better draft when we?ve had an opportunity to see these young players play at an elite level before they come into the NBA. On the other hand, I think the question for the league is: In terms of their ultimate success, are we better off intersecting with them a little bit younger? Are we better off bringing them into the league when they?re 18, using our G League as it was designed to be, as a development league, and getting them minutes on the court there??

Monday?s List of 13; Wrapping up a sports weekend

13) I?m still kind of wondering how Aaron Boone lands a job managing a major league baseball team in New York City, when he has never managed anywhere before, ever.

Dealing with the NYC media is a task in itself; maybe I question that part of it more than the actual X?s and O?s of baseball, which I?m sure Boone will handle just fine.

Same thing goes for Davey Martinez in Washington, who are expected to make the playoffs again this season. Wouldn?t you want a more experienced guy to handle a really good team?

12) One of the best parts of March is that there is almost constant baseball on TV, mostly replays of spring training games from earlier in the day. Season is starting earlier this year, so exhibition games started earlier too. Excellent.

It does bug me when TV guys appear bored to have to work these games. I know they don?t mean anything, obviously the real games aren?t for another month, but John Kruk on the Phillies? TV games is a big disappointment, and FP Santangelo on Nationals? game is like an 8-year old with a live microphone. Its your job, pretend you care about doing it well.

11) New Mexico 91, UNLV 90- Very fun game to watch; Rebels were only 4-7 on arc, 28-40 on foul line. Very bitter loss when you miss 12 foul shots and lose by one. #10 on New Mexico hit the game-winning 3-pointer; he is 31-61 on the arc for the season.

On New Mexico?s last possession, UNLV took freshman star McCoy out and put Diong in, because Diong is a better defender. When McCoy is deciding whether or not to go to the NBA this spring, the fact that his team takes him out on defense on the most important possession of the game should tell him that he?ll make a lot more money (eventually) if he stays in school for another year and gets bulkier/stronger before he gets drafted into the NBA.

10) Duke beat Syracuse 60-44 Saturday night, but were just 2-18 on arc against Syracuse?s 2-3 zone. Blue Devils had been 30-72 on the arc in their previous three games.

9) Last year, the Dodgers played only 45 games where their starting pitcher was working on 4 days? rest, the fewest in the majors. Next fewest were Bronx (53), Astros/Padres (64) and the Nationals (67).

8) Red Sox/Tampa Bay play 10 times before May 1st this season; Boston TV guys were pretty much assuming on air Saturday that the Red Sox will kick their butts and get off to a fast start this season. Tampa Bay dumped a lot of its better players this winter.

7) There are 15 big league teams training in Arizona, 15 in Florida, so at least one team has to play split squad games every day, to even the schedule out.

6) Logan Morrison turned down $20M for two years from the Indians, winds up signing a 1-year, $6.5M deal with Minnesota that best-case, could become two years, $16.5M. Brilliant!!!!

5) Houston 109, East Carolina 58? Houston led this game 62-13 at halftime. East Carolina will be hiring a new coach soon; sounds like it is a difficult rebuilding job.

4) Unfortunate news from the WCC: San Diego Toreros are having a terrific season this year at 18-12, finished .500 in WCC for first time in 10 years, but coach Lamont Smith was arrested at the Oakland Airport Sunday on three counts of domestic violence.

3) Championship Week is actually two weeks and it starts tonight with the Atlantic Sun tournament being played at campus sites. Florida Gulf Coast is favored to win the tournament.

2) One of the most interesting bubble teams for March Madness is Nebraska; they?re 22-9, 13-5 in Big 14, but the league is down this year and the Cornhuskers? non-conference schedule is #281, which makes them likely to miss the NCAA tournament.

Lot of interesting debate on Twitter about Nebraska; no one has ever been 13-5 in the Big 14 and missed the NCAA?s. Until maybe now.

1? Sunday night in Iowa City, Jordan Bohannon intentionally missed a foul shot, ending his streak of 34 consecutive made free throws, which was tied for the school record with Chris Street, who was killed in a snowy car accident January 19, 1993 during his junior season. Street is an Iowa legend; his parents still have season tickets to Hawkeye games.

Bohannon did this with 2:15 left and Iowa leading Northwestern 73-65 in their regular season finale. He left the shot short, off the front rim, and pointed to the sky. Pretty cool gesture.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: A pair of deadline buyers face off Wednesday night
Monty Andrews

The Bruins acquired goal-scoring star Rick Nash from the New York Rangers and signed veteran free agent Brian Gionta.

The NHL's trade deadline goes off today and there has been plenty of trade action prior to the traditional busy transaction day. The Pens and Bruins both made key acquisitions and will face off Wednesday night in Boston. Monty Andrews dangles at the hash and goes bar down to give NHL bettors a breakdown of what to watch for this week on the ice.

Tampa-Toronto Tussle

The Tampa Bay Lightning's lead atop the Atlantic Division standings is a tenuous one as they welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to Florida in a battle between two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. The Lightning come into the week having won three in a row, but haven't been able to build upon their four-point lead thanks to the Maple Leafs having prevailed in four straight games. It's the third of four meetings this season between the teams, who have split a pair of games in Toronto - and it'll happen without Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews, who is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury.

Home-and-Home Out West

Los Angeles and Vegas will take part in a home-and-home series Monday and Tuesday - and that benefits the Golden Knights a whole lot more than the Kings. The expansion marvels continue to confound fans and bettors alike, going 5-2-0 on a seven-game homestand to hang on to top spot in the Presidents' Trophy race. That stretch also improves Vegas' record to 24-5-2 at T-Mobile Arena on the season - making it one of the strongest home plays in the league. The Kings haven't been nearly as strong at home, going just 14-11-3; they've also lost their first two meetings with the Golden Knights this season.

Seeking a Sweep

The Calgary Flames have had the edge over the Colorado Avalanche so far this season - including a dominant victory over the weekend. The Flames will be looking to complete a season series sweep of the Avalanche as the Western Conference rivals do battle Wednesday night at Pepsi Center. Calgary edged Colorado 3-2 back on Nov. 25, and throttled the visiting Avalanche 5-1 on Saturday night to move into a tie for third place with Anaheim in the Pacific Division. The Avalanche have fallen to sixth in the Central Division but have been sensational at home in 2017-18, going 20-8-1 so far.

Movers and Shakers

Two of the more active buyers ahead of Monday's trade deadline will face off in Boston as the Bruins host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night. The Penguins bolstered their offence prior to the weekend, adding forward Derick Brassard from the Ottawa Senators in a three-team trade. The Bruins made an even more significant move over the weekend, acquiring goal-scoring star Rick Nash from the New York Rangers and signing veteran free agent Brian Gionta. Pittsburgh comes into the week averaging a league-best 4.55 goals per game in February, while the Bruins were also in the top 10 for the month (3.36) entering Sunday.

Player Notes

* The reeling Ottawa Senators are cleaning house - and not just through the trade market. Aiming to give their top young players more time on the ice, the Senators have waived forward Alex Burrows and defenceman Johnny Oduya.

* Gionta isn't the only player to go from the Olympics to a spot on an NHL team. Fresh off his bronze-medal showing as captain of the Canadian Olympic team, Chris Kelly has signed on with the Ducks for the remainder of the season.

* The Evander Kane sweepstakes will be one of the hottest storylines heading into the deadline - and as expected, there is no shortage of suitors. San Jose, Anaheim and Philadelphia are all interested in Kane, who has 20 goals and 20 assists this season.

Injury Updates

* The Flames might have to do without the services of forward Micheal Ferland against Dallas on Tuesday. Ferland, who sat out Saturday's game with an undisclosed ailment, has established career bests in goals (20) and points (34) through 61 games.

* Stars forward Alexander Radulov is dealing with an upper-body injury and is questionable for Tuesday night's encounter with the Flames. Radulov has been a revelation for Dallas this season, racking up 23 goals and 33 assists in his first 62 games.

* There's good news on the injury front for the New Jersey Devils, who are expected to get goaltender Cory Schneider back as early as this week. Schneider is 17-11-6 with a 2.79 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage and one shutout this season.

Betting Trends

* Unders remain the strong current league-wide play, with 25 of 43 games going below the number over the previous seven days (as of early Sunday). But the overs still have it for the previous 30-day period, with 52 percent of games going above the total.

* The hottest overall betting play over the past week? Road favorites have gone a sizzling 13-3 in that span, converting at an 81-percent clip. Favorites on the whole have also been a great option, winning 70.2 percent of the time over that stretch.

* The Ducks are officially the hottest under play in the league as the month of February winds down. Anaheim has gone below the total in eight consecutive games and comes into the new week at 22-40-1 O/U for the season.
