NHL Game of the Day: Maple Leafs at Lightning betting preview and odds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Frederik Andersen had lost five of his first six career decisions against Tampa Bay before recording a 4-3 home victory on Feb. 12 to even the season series.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Tampa Bay Lightning (A: +155, H: -170, T: 6)

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made it a three-team battle for the Atlantic Division title with an impressive run and can move closer to the top when they visit the first-place Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday. The Maple Leafs are 13-2-0 in their last 15 games and have won four in a row after edging Boston 4-3 on Saturday to move one point ahead of the Bruins and climb within four of the Lightning.

?We like our team, we think we?re getting better, and we think we?ve been getting better for a while,? Toronto coach Mike Babcock told reporters. ?We think we?re learning to play the right way. If we play hard, we have a chance to play with anybody.? The trade deadline arrives Monday afternoon, and the Maple Leafs got a jump on things a day earlier by acquiring veteran center Tomas Plekanec from Montreal for a pair of prospects and a 2018 second-round draft pick. Tampa Bay is rumored to be involved in trade talk, with its focus on improving a defense that has allowed 39 goals in 12 games this month despite posting an 8-4-0 record after a perfect three-game road trip that ended with Saturday's 4-3 shootout win at Montreal. ?It?s a hard league and they?re finding ways to win,? Lightning coach Jon Cooper told reporters. ?But you can?t wait until the third (period), be down and expect every time you?re going to come back.?

TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Ontario, TVA (Toronto), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

LINE HISTORY:
The Lightning opened as -180 favorites and as of Monday morning that number was down slightly to -170 at most books. The total hit betting boards at 6 goals and has yet to move.

GOALIE SHOWDOWN:

Frederik Andersen (TOR) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (TB)
GP W L OTL GAA SAVE % SO

Frederik Andersen
53 32 16 4 2.67 .922 5

Andrei Vasilevskiy
51 36 12 2 2.34 .927 7

INJURY REPORT:

Maple Leafs - C Tomas Plekanec (Questionable, Trade Acquisition), C Auston Matthews (Early March, Shoulder), LW Joffrey Lupul (I-R, Conditioning).

Lightning - G Peter Budaj (Early March, Leg), LW Ondrej Palat (Mid March, Lower Body).

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (39-20-5, 29-30-5 O/U):
Auston Matthews (team-best 28 goals) is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury, but Mitch Marner has taken over the scoring lead by registering 20 of his 51 points in the last 17 games. ?That confidence is there for Mitch,? center Nazem Kadri told reporters. ?As an offensive player, once you get in the rhythm with scoring and putting points on the board, you just catch a streak.? Frederik Andersen had lost five of his first six career decisions against Tampa Bay before recording a 4-3 home victory on Feb. 12 to even the season series.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (42-17-3, 39-22-1 O/U):
The wins keep coming despite some shakiness on the blue line thanks to some outstanding goaltending from Andrei Vasilevskiy (league-best 36 wins, .927 save percentage) and several lethal offensive players. Nikita Kucherov leads the league with 82 points and has notched at least one in nine straight games while Brayden Point has scored in four consecutive contests (five goals overall) and recorded a point in seven in a row. Norris Trophy candidate Victor Hedman has collected seven points in his last six games and leads all NHL defensemen with a plus-27 rating.

TRENDS:

* Maple Leafs are 14-3 in their last 17 overall.
* Lightning are 22-7 in their last 29 home games.
* Over is 6-1 in Maple Leafs last 7 games following a win.
* Over is 11-1 in Lightning last 12 games following a win.
* Road team is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

CONSENSUS:
Early return from contest users showed 75 percent of the moneyline picks on the home favorite Tampa Bay Lightning and 51 percent of the totals wagers thus far have been on the Over.

Blue Jackets acquire defenseman Ian Cole from Senators
February 26, 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) The Columbus Blue Jacket acquired defenseman Ian Cole from the Ottawa Senators on Monday for center Nick Moutrey and a 2020 third round draft pick.

This is the second time in three days Cole has been moved. Ottawa acquired the 29-year-old Friday night from the Penguins in a deal that brought Derick Brassard to Pittsburgh.

But it was believed the Senators were not going to keep Cole, who now joins Pittsburgh's regional and divisional rival.

At the start of the day, Columbus was the second Eastern Conference wild card, even though the Blue Jackets have dropped 10 of 15.

Cole has 18 goals and 72 assists in 385 regular season games with Pittsburgh and St. Louis. In 52 games this season with the Penguins, Cole has three goals and 10 assists.

Moutrey has 17 goals and 17 assists in 136 games with Cleveland, Columbus' AHL affiliate.

Lightning edge Maple Leafs despite injury to Kucherov
February 27, 2018

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Brayden Point scored the deciding goal in a shootout for the second consecutive game, lifting the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

Tyler Johnson, Chris Kunitz and Adam Erne scored in regulation for the NHL-leading Lightning, who played most of the game without Nikita Kucherov after the league's top scorer was injured. Still, the Atlantic Division leaders edged second-place Toronto hours after acquiring defenseman Ryan McDonagh and forward J.T. Miller in a blockbuster deal with the New York Rangers just before the NHL trade deadline.

Tampa Bay parted with forward Vladimir Namestnikov, two prospects and two draft picks - a first-round selection in 2018 and a conditional first-rounder in 2019.

James van Riemsdyk, Mitch Marner and Tyler Bozak had the goals for Toronto, which played without injured star Auston Matthews. Frederik Andersen stopped 39 shots.

Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with 27 saves for Tampa Bay. He denied Marner on a penalty shot with 6:02 left in the third period to keep the score tied.

Kucherov left with 5:41 remaining in the first and did not return. The team announced he sustained an upper-body injury. The two-time All-Star has 82 points in 63 games.

BLUE JACKETS 5, CAPITALS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Seth Jones and Cam Atkinson each had a goal and two assists as Columbus topped Washington.

Columbus scored four goals in the first period - two on power plays - in winning its second game in three days and first in four tries against the Capitals this season. Artemi Panarin had a goal and an assist, and Sonny Milano and Mark Letestu - acquired in a trade Sunday - also scored.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 25 saves for the Blue Jackets, who held onto the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with a knot of teams still in contention.

Alex Ovechkin got his league-leading 39th goal for Washington. Braden Holtby made 12 saves in the first period and Philipp Grubauer had 18 in the last two.

FLYERS 1, CANADIENS 0, SO

MONTREAL (AP) - Sean Couturier scored in the sixth round of the shootout and Philadelphia edged Montreal for its season-best sixth straight victory.

Petr Mrazek, making his third straight start for the streaking Flyers, stopped 28 shots in his fourth shutout this season. Mrazek is 3-0-0 since being acquired from Detroit last Monday.

Philadelphia passed Washington for first place in the Metropolitan Division. The Flyers have earned at least one point in 12 straight games (10-0-2).

Backup goalie Charlie Lindgren made 33 saves for the Canadiens, who have lost eight of nine.

Both teams scored one goal after five shootout rounds before Couturier beat Lindgren in the sixth.

The Canadiens have been shut out nine times this season, tying a franchise record.

AVALANCHE 3, CANUCKS 1

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon had two goals and an assist, and Mikko Rantanen added a goal and an assist in Colorado's victory over Vancouver.

Semyon Varlamov made 31 saves and came within 1:16 of his third shutout this season. The Avalanche won for the 11th time in 12 home games and moved within two points of idle Calgary for the second wild card in the Western Conference.

Daniel Sedin scored and Jacob Markstrom stopped 25 shots for the Canucks.

B]Tuesday?s 6-pack[/B]

Six top prospects for the Chicago White Sox:

1) Eloy Jimenez, OF? Hit .353 in 18 games in the Southern League LY.

2) Michael Kopech, P? Has 344 strikeouts in 269 career IP

5) Dane Dunning, P? florida alum has 2.76 ERA in two years in A ball.

9) Zach Collins, C? Supposedly a good hitter, but hit .229 in first two years.

9) Gavin Sheets, 1B? Wake Forest alum is son of former big leaguer Larry Sheets

13) Carson Fulmer, P? Vandy alum was 3-1, 3.86 in seven big league games (5 starts) LY.

Quote of the Day
?Like I said, I retweeted on Twitter, you?re going to make me cry. It?s emotional even thinking about that, that his parents felt that, buried him in my jersey was something that he wanted. I take pride in what I?ve done in this state and what I?ve meant for the youth. I appreciate it.?
Dwyane Wade, after hearing one of the kids who died in the Florida school shooting was buried wearing a Wade Miami Heat jersey

Tuesday?s quiz

Monday?s quiz
Andrew Jackson?s picture is on the $20 bill.

Sunday?s quiz
The late Martin Landau played the law professor in the poker movie, Rounders.

***********************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) There are reports out of Los Angeles that the Dodgers are having $$$ problems and are looking for minority investors (25%??). You?d think the Dodgers are one team that wouldn?t have money problems, but these are weird times? you never know.

Dodgers paid over $48M last year to players who never played for them, otherwise known as dead money.

12) Thinking ahead; since the NCAA?s went to 68 teams, the 11-seeds who advance with Tuesday/Wednesday play-in wins are 8-6 vs spread in their first-round games that they play on short rest. 13 of those 14 teams were underdogs; Tennessee (-4) covered as the lone favorite in the next round, back in 2014.

11) Red Sox were 15-3 in extra inning games last year, most extra inning games played in the major leagues last season.

10) Five major leaguers played every game last season:
Joey Votto, Freddy Galvis, Rougned Odor, Eric Hosmer and Alcides Escobar.

Galvis and Hosmer left their 2017 teams and will be teammates on the Padres this year.

9) Golfer Justin Thomas has won 7 of the last 31 PGA tournaments he entered.

7 of the last 15 PGA tournaments went to a playoff, but hey, Eldrick Woods finished 12th.

8) Quinnipiac lost seven of its last eight games heading into the MAAC tournament, but three of those seven losses were in double overtime. Mike Dunleavy?s son Baker is the coach there; this is his first season. Teams are shooting 40.8% behind the arc vs Quinnipiac this year, 4th-highest %age against any team in the country.

7) JD Martinez will make $22M a year for the Red Sox; he has played more than 123 games in a season ONCE in his career!!!!

If JD Martinez spends 120+ days on the DL with Boston, Red Sox will get some salary relief later in his contract. Martinez knocked in 104 runs in 119 games for Detroit/Arizona LY, which is a lot of production, but he does get hurt a lot.

6) Conference tournament knowledge: #1 seed has won the last seven Big Sky tournaments. Last four Atlantic 14 tournaments were won by teams seeded #3 or worse.

5) NC State won its last four basketball games; in those games, backup G Sam Hunt made 14-17 behind the arc. Hunt has had an interesting career; he played a year at Jacksonville, then two years at North Carolina A&T- in those three seasons, he made 34.3% of his 3-pointers. This year, playing as a senior in the ACC, Hunt is making 41.8% (46-110) behind the arc.

4) Los Angeles Rams got CB Marcus Peters from the Chiefs, sending 2nd/4th round picks to KC. Rams also get a 6th-round pick in the deal.

3) It is weird to me that the Big 14 tournament is this week instead of next week; having it in New York City doesn?t matter much to me, since TV is TV, but having it at the same time as Arch Madness and the MAAC tourney and the WCC is just so different.

2) Doing some conference tournament research: over the last six years, in the semis/finals of the OVC tournament, the underdogs are 12-5 vs spread- one game had no line. Favorites are 15-8-1 vs spread in the first two rounds.

1? Colleges who have already fired their basketball coach:
Charlotte
Colorado State
East Carolina
Eastern Kentucky
Ole Miss
Cal-Riverside
UTEP

Contenders deal high draft picks at NHL trade deadline
February 27, 2018

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has suddenly come to appreciate how valuable first-round draft picks are when a team's not in playoff contention at the NHL trade deadline.

''I've been on that on the other side,'' Holland said, recalling Detroit's heydays in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when the Red Wings were competing with Dallas, Colorado and New Jersey in vying to add top talent to strengthen their playoff run. ''When those teams made a move, we were aware of it.''

The Red Wings were far from that position, sitting in a tie for 12th and five points out of contention, when the trade deadline struck on Monday afternoon. Though Holland wasn't discounting Detroit's chances of making a late-season push, he wasn't exactly dealing from a position of strength.

Rather than adding a player, the Red Wings subtracted . They traded established forward Tomas Tartar to the Western Conference-leading Vegas Golden Knights for three draft picks, including a first-round selection.

''This wasn't a rental in this case,'' Holland said of Tatar, a three-time 20-goal-scorer with three years left on his contract. ''But the trading of the first-round picks speaks to those teams that have had great years and feel that they've got to do something that really impacts their team.''

The Golden Knights weren't the only contender giving up high draft picks on a day 18 trades were completed.

Six first-round selections - two of them conditional - were dealt Monday, the most to move on the final day of NHL trading since at least 2008, according to league figures. And no first-rounders had moved on each of the previous two trade-deadline days.

San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson attributed the amount of first-rounders dealt to how tight the playoff races are, particularly in the Western Conference. Before games on Monday, six points separated the Sharks, who sit second in the Pacific Division standings, and Colorado, which was 11th in the West.

''It's supply and demand of those players that can make a difference,'' Wilson said after trading a conditional 2019 first-round pick to acquire Buffalo's Evander Kane . ''Some people would say pricey, but it almost always is pricey at this time of year when you have competitive juices flowing.''

The East-leading Tampa Bay Lightning traded a 2018 first-round pick, a conditional 2019 first-rounder and three players to acquire Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh and J.T. Miller, New York's second-leading scorer.

The Winnipeg Jets gave up a first-round pick to add even more offense to the NHL's fourth-best scoring team in acquiring Paul Stastny from St. Louis.

Nashville parted ways with a first-round pick to land forward Ryan Hartman from Chicago.

Those deals don't include the first-round pick the Rangers acquired as part of the trade that sent Rick Nash to Boston on Sunday. And Pittsburgh gave up a first-round pick last week as part of a three-team trade to add Ottawa's Derick Brassard.

Rangers GM Jeff Gorton was the big winner as far as accumulating top draft picks to help spur an overhaul of New York's aging roster.

''There's a lot of opportunity to grow as a team and make our team better,'' he said. ''I feel like we're just starting.''

The Rangers now have three first-round picks and seven over the first three rounds, leaving Gorton with the option of using some of them in trades.

''Whatever it takes,'' he said. ''We're looking forward to it. Having three picks is exciting.''

Some executives found the price of parting with a first-round pick too steep, which prevented them from making moves. They included the Columbus Blue Jackets, who gave up a third-round pick and role players in acquiring defenseman Ian Cole from Ottawa and forward Thomas Vanek from Vancouver.

''I guess we were out of that competition because we kind of established our position from the start that we don't want to give up a first-round pick,'' GM Jarmo Kekalainen said before noting the Blue Jackets dealt their 2017 first-round pick to Vegas as part of the NHL expansion draft last June.

''I can already feel the effects of the one-year hole, I definitely didn't want to feel the effects of the two-year hole in the depth chart,'' Kekalainen added. ''That was a non-starter.''

Preds, Jets set to clash
February 27, 2018

The Central Question

It?s all eyes on the MTS Centre in Winnipeg tonight as the top two teams in the NHL Central Division (and indeed two of the top teams in the whole league) go toe to toe in a crucial encounter.

The defending Western Conference champs from Nashville travel north of the border with a two-point advantage over their host. The Predators warmed up for the duel with a 4-0 shutout win over the St. Louis Blues and on-fire goalie Pekka Rinne will be looking for another top performance against one of the few teams in the league to have crossed the 200-goal mark this season.

The Jets looked equally impressive when beating the Stars on the road in their last game and the trade-deadline addition of Paul Stastny has further underlined that the franchise means business in this year?s Stanley Cup chase.

After sharing victories in their two meetings so far this season, tonight?s game could give the winner a slight psychological advantage as the playoffs begin to loom large.

The bookies fancy the Jets to make the most of home advantage and thus add further excitement to what promises to be the closest divisional title race in the NHL this time around.

Streaking Taylor Hall, Devils end Penguins' run at home
February 27, 2018

PITTSBURGH (AP) Taylor Hall equaled the Devils' franchise record with points in 15 straight games, Stefan Noesen scored the only goal of the third period and New Jersey beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Tuesday.

Noesen, playing in his 100th NHL game, broke a 2-2 tie with his ninth of the season five minutes into the third. He tipped Andy Greene's attempt from the side boards behind Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith.

Hall equaled a career high with his 27th goal and had an assist. Hall, who missed three games with a hand injury, has points in the last 22 games in which he's played, scoring 15 goals and 32 points during that span. He's the fifth player in the last 25 years with at least one point in 22 consecutive appearances.

Sidney Crosby scored his 21st goal and Matt Hunwick tallied his fourth for the Penguins, whose 11-game home win streak ended.

WILD 8, BLUES 3

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal had three goals and two assists to combine with linemates Mikael Granlund and Jason Zucker for 14 points and propel surging Minnesota over St. Louis.

The Blues lost their seventh straight.

Staal notched his 14th career hat trick, his first in more than five years. By scoring 13 times in 13 games in February, Staal raised his season total to 33 goals to move into the top five in the NHL.

Granlund had two goals and two assists and Zucker added a goal and four assists for the Wild, who have won five in a row overall and are 19-2-5 in their last 26 home games since Nov. 14. The Wild's eight goals matched their franchise record.

STARS 2, FLAMES 0

DALLAS (AP) - Ben Bishop made 37 saves and Dallas blanked Calgary for his 24th career shutout.

Bishop's shutout was his fifth this season. He had 17 saves in the second period, when Dallas increased its lead to 2-0 on a power-play goal by Tyler Seguin, his 32nd.

The Stars maintained their hold on the first Western Conference wild card spot and prevented Calgary, which sits just outside the second wild card position, from moving ahead of them.

Gillies took his first loss in six NHL games. He stopped 24 shots.

CAPITALS 3, SENATORS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Evgeny Kuznetsov scored his 18th and 19th goals of the season to lead Washington past Ottawa.

Tom Wilson also scored for Washington, which leapfrogged Philadelphia to regain first place in the Metropolitan Division by one point. The Capitals are 3-0 this season against struggling Ottawa.

Matt Niskanen assisted on both of Kuznetsov's goals, each coming less than a minute after the end of a successful Capitals penalty kill.

Philipp Grubauer made 28 saves for Washington in his 18th start of the season.

Erik Karlsson had a goal and an assist a day after Ottawa held onto the All-Star defenseman at the NHL trade deadline.

PREDATORS 6, JETS 5

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Roman Josi had five assists, Craig Smith scored twice and Ryan Hartman redirected in the winning goal during his Nashville debut, sending the streaking Predators over Winnipeg.

Hartman, acquired in a trade with Chicago at Monday's deadline, gave the Predators their first lead with a minute left when he deflected a shot by Josi.

Kyle Turris, Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Johansen also scored as Nashville won its fifth straight, padding its division lead to four points over the Jets. Josi extended his point streak to five games.

Mark Scheifele scored twice and new Winnipeg forward Paul Stastny had a goal and an assist.

BOSTON (AP) - Charlie McAvoy scored 1:08 into overtime and Rick Nash had a goal in his home debut as Boston rallied past Carolina.

Tommy Wingels, Riley Nash and McAvoy each had a goal and an assist for Boston, which avoided losing three straight for the first time this season after falling behind 3-1 late in the first period.

Brock McGinn, Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho scored for Carolina, and Justin Faulk had two assists. Scott Darling stopped 28 shots for the Hurricanes, who are 0-5-1 in their last six games.

Tuukka Rask made 29 saves for the Bruins, who overcame a rocky first period and got big nights from two new additions.

PANTHERS 3, MAPLE LEAFS 2, OT

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Jared McCann scored at 3:47 of overtime and Florida beat Toronto.

McCann grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated in and fired a shot from the slot past goalie Curtis McElhinney.

Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and an assist, and Aleksander Barkov also scored for the Panthers. Vincent Trocheck added two assists and Roberto Luongo stopped 37 shots.

Zach Hyman and Dominic Moore scored for the Maple Leafs, and McElhinney made 28 saves. Star center Auston Matthews sat out again with a shoulder injury.

34.5? Manny Machado
33.5? Josh Donaldson

?Failure is a part of life. It?s part of building character and growing. Without failure, who would you be? I wouldn?t be up here if I hadn?t fallen a thousand times. Made mistakes.?
Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles

Wednesday?s quiz
Where did Mike Krzyzewski play his college basketball?

Tuesday?s quiz
Ulysses S Grant?s picture is on the $50 bill.

Monday?s quiz
Andrew Jackson?s picture is on the $20 bill.

****************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Starting today, the first of some changes here at the website will take place.

No more daily NHL write-ups; I?ve decided to concentrate on basketball between football and baseball seasons. For now, everything else here stays the same.

12) I?m not making this up: A Pittsburgh-area family is suing Steelers? safety Sean Davis because he posted a Snapchat video about how slow the service was at the drive-thru window at a Chick-fil-A, where their son works- the son was then ?bullied? at school because of the video.

The lawsuit contains claims for libel, cyberbullying, intentional infliction of emotional distress and slander. Davis offered to invite the teenager and two friends to be his guest at a Steelers? practice, and to go to Davis? summer football camp in Washington, but the family declined.

Good grief, our country is getting soft.

11) I mentioned Sunday how Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley was going after the refs as they left the floor in Corvallis after the Sun Devils lost to Oregon State Saturday- the Pac-12 nailed him with a $10,000 fine for those shenanigans.

10) If Bronx Bombers? GM Brian Cashman is so bleeping smart, let him go be the GM of the Pirates or the Rays or the A?s and see how many freakin? games his team wins. Gets old hearing media types praise Cashman all the time? he is playing checkers with more pieces than most of his opponents- he should win. Since 2001, Cashman?s team has one World Series title, after a run of four titles in five years in the late 90?s.

9) Speaking of Tampa Bay, they may not have an excuse to be cheapskates for too much longer; Rays and Fox Sports Net are nearing a long-term extension to their broadcast deal. From CBSSports.com:

?Fox?s payout is expected to increase to around $50 million in 2019 under the new contract. Over the 15-year life of the deal, which would run through the 2033 season, Fox would pay, on average, around $82 million per year.?

8) Several NBA personnel types told ESPN?s Jeff Goodman that they would advise Missouri freshman Michael Porter Jr to play this season, rather than just sit out and wait for the NBA Draft. Porter played 2:00 in the opener and hasn?t played since because of a back problem.

7) Texas declined to sign free agent P Seung-hwan Oh because he failed his physical; Toronto then signed Oh- you wonder what the difference is in the physicals between the two teams.

6) Three US cities with the best TV ratings for the Winter Olympics: Salt Lake City, Denver and Minneapolis.

5) Former big league reliever Andrew Bailey retired from playing and will be the Angels? instant replay coordinator this season. I?m a curious guy; wonder how much that job pays?

4) Why is Russell Wilson in spring training with the Bronx Bombers? How does his presence there help them prepare for this season? Does he still get paid by the Seahawks if he tears an ACL playing baseball?

3) 20 or so years ago, I bowled in a Thursday night league; had never done it before, haven?t done it since. It was kind of fun, but I was in over my head and didn?t do very well? I didn?t even own my own bowling ball, just used an alley ball every week. But hey, I could watch college games on TV and eat pizza in between my turns.

One night, a guy on the lanes to my right bowled a 300? it was a different league, really good bowlers, and I remember how casual the guy was about bowling a 300. I was excited, I mean the guy just bowled a freakin? perfect game- couldn?t understand why he just smiled, and got ready for his next game. Best I ever did was a 212; anything over 170 was cause for celebration.

2) According to baseball-reference.com. San Francisco Giants already have $127M in salary obligations for 2020; Minnesota Twins have $0 on the books after 2019.

1? If you?re a kid in West Virginia this week, you were on an unscheduled vacation? teachers went on strike for better pay/benefits, but they?ll be back at work on Thursday.

When I was a junior in high school, our teachers were on strike when school started? problem is, teachers at two other local schools were also on strike, so the teachers would go to the other two schools and be subs to make some $$$, which kind of defeated the whole purpose.

We had a different teacher for every class every day for the whole week; it was chaotic; some kids marched to the district offices to ?protest for the teachers? ? they just didn?t want to go to class. For those lazy people like me who had no desire to walk anywhere, we just sat in class, did very little and stayed out of trouble. Good times.

STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Carolina 0-4-2 past six games overall Boston Over 7-3 past 10 games overall

N.Y. Rangers 3-13-1 past 17 games overall Calgary Over 5-2-1 past eight games overall

Ottawa 0-4-1 past five games overall Carolina Under 10-4 past 14 games overall

Philadelphia 10-0-1 past 11 games overall Detroit Under 8-0 past eight games overall

St. Louis 0-6-1 past seven games overall Tampa Bay Over 11-1-1 past 13 games overall

Detroit Lock City

The Detroit Red Wings have won two in a row, but they have mostly been spinning their wheels lately. However, while they're 5-5-2 across the past 12 games overall, nine of those outings have resulted in one-goal games. That's huge if you're into betting puck lines. However, Detroit has been a lock recently for total bettors. The 'under' is 8-0 in the past eight contests, and the under is 15-3 in the past 18 games, and 22-6 across the past 28 battles. The streak might continue in Wednesday's outing in St. Louis, as the under is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings. The under is also 7-0 in the past seven for St. Louis against Eastern Conference teams, and 18-7 in the past 25 home games. The Blues are playing in their fourth game in six days, and the under is 11-5 in their past 16 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation, so keep that in mind Wednesday.

Jekyll and Hyde

The New Jersey Devils are a hard team to figure out lately. They are the only team to spoil the fun for the Philadelphia Flyers over the past 11 games, winning 5-4 in a shootout on Feb. 13, and that victory kicked off a four-game winning streak which included a home-and-home sweep of the Carolina Hurricanes and a 4-3 win on the road against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Like Detroit above, five of the past eight for New Jersey have resulted in one-goal outcomes. Speaking of Jekyll and Hyde, the 'over' cashed in five in a row from Feb. 10-17, but the 'under' is now 4-0-1 across the past five battles. That includes a 3-2 'under' result in a win on the road against the Pittsburgh Penguins last time out on Tuesday night.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, February 28

The Colorado Avalanche and Calgary Flames are battling for playoff positioning in the Western Conference and/or they're trying to stay in the playoff mix. The last time these teams hooked up it was a 5-1 beatdown by the Flames in Calgary on Saturday night, so the Avalanche will be looking for a little payback at home. Calgary has posted a 4-0 record over their past four against Central Division teams, and they're 9-4 in their past 13 games away from home. For Colorado, they have won 13 of the past 16 at home, but they're 5-17 in the past 22 home games against a team with a winning road record, and they're 1-4 in the past five overall against teams with a winning overall mark. The Flames have won five in a row in this series, and 12 of their past 17 visits to the Mile High City.

Thursday, March 1

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins were two busy teams adding key components at the NHL trade deadline, trying to get better for what they hope will be a stretch run. The key add for the Pens was Derick Brassard from the Ottawa Senators, while the B's welcomed scorer Rick Nash to the fold. These teams could be on a collision course in the playoffs, and if the first two meetings are any indication, it might be a very entertaining series. The Bruins topped the Penguins 4-3 on Nov. 24 in Beantown, and the Pens returned the favor 6-5 in overtime in the Steel City back on Jan. 7. The home team has won six meetings in a row since the B's were able to win on Pittsburgh's ice back on Dec. 18, 2015, the last visitor to cash in this series.

The Los Angeles Kings swept a home-and-home series against the Vegas Golden Knights Monday-Tuesday, giving them four valuable points as they sniff around for a playoff spot. They're battling several teams just to get into the playoff mix, but things are certainly looking up. L.A. is 5-2 over their past seven games, and they're 4-2 over the past six at Staples Center while averaging 3.5 goals per game during the span. These teams used to meet frequently when the Blue Jackets were in the Western Conference, but now they square off just twice per season. The first meeting resulted in a 6-4 win by the Kings in Columbus, which was a rarity. The previous five meetings were all one-goal games.

Friday, March 2

It's a busy slate for a Friday, and the Canadiens and Islanders do battle in the second end of a home-and-home after meeting Wednesday in Montreal. The Islanders entered play just 2-5 over their past seven overall, and 1-5 in their past six against Atlantic Division teams. The Habs entered just 7-20 in their past 27 overall, while going 1-4 in their past five against Eastern Conference clubs and 1-5 in their past six against Metropolitan Division clubs. With those types of numbers it's no wonder why both of these teams were sellers at the trade deadline. Montreal has won 10 of the past 14 against New York heading into Wednesday's game.

The Predators invade the Pacific Northwest looking to take care of the Canucks and keep their lead in the Western Conference. It went about as good as possible the last time the Predators were in town, topping the Canucks 7-1 back on Dec. 13. They were returning the favor after suffering a 5-3 setback on home ice in the previous meeting on Nov. 30. It's odd that the home team has dropped both meetings this series, as the home team was 5-0 in the previous five meetings in the series entering the season.

Saturday, March 3

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals square off outside at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and all eyes will be on the nationally-televised outdoor game. These teams met in an epic seven-game playoff series as the Leafs turned some heads and served notice to the rest of the NHL that they're on their way back. The Caps haven't gone away, as they're still a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference.

The Leafs and Caps have split the first two meetings. Toronto won 2-0 against Washington in the first battle on Oct. 17 in D.C., and the Caps took a 4-2 decision on Nov. 25. The Caps have been faltering lately, as they have failed to win back-to-back games since sweeping a home-and-home against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Feb. 6-9. So of course they would pound the Jackets on Monday in Columbus, right? Nope. They were blasted 5-1. Washington's unpredictability lately has become comical.

This is just the third-ever NHL Outdoor Game for the Leafs. They won 3-2 in a shootout at Michigan Stadium in the Winter Classic on Jan. 1, 2014, and they won 5-4 in overtime against the Red Wings at BMO Field in Toronto in the Centennial Classic on Jan. 1, 2017. Something's gotta give, too, as the Capitals are also 2-0 all-time in their outdoor games. They won on the road against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Heinz Field back on Jan. 1, 2011, and they pushed aside the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in regulation at Nationals Park in D.C. on Jan. 1, 2015 in the Winter Classic.
