Predators capture 8th straight victory
March 4, 2018

DENVER (AP) Filip Forsberg scored at 1:07 of overtime and the Nashville Predators matched the franchise record with their eighth straight victory, beating the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Sunday.

Nashville has won nine in a row against Colorado, including three this season.

Nashville's Ryan Ellis tied it with 1:06 left in regulation with goalie Pekka Rinne off for an extra attacker. Austin Watson and Kyle Turris also scored, and Rinne made 22 saves.

Nikita Zadarov, Matt Nieto and Mikko Rantanen scored for Colorado.

DUCKS 6, BLACKHAWKS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jakob Silfverberg and Corey Perry each scored twice and Anaheim earned points at home for the eighth game in a row, beating Chicago.

Rickard Rakell scored for the third straight game, Marcus Pettersson had his first career goal, and John Gibson made 37 saves. The Ducks moved into third place in the Pacific Division, a point ahead of Los Angeles. They improved to 6-0-2 in their last eight games at home and 6-1-1 in their last eight overall.

Nick Schmaltz had two goals, and Tomas Jurco scored for the Blackhawks. They are 1-7-1 in their last eight road games. Anton Forsberg gave up four goals on 21 shots before getting pulled midway through the second period, and Jean-Francois Berube made eight saves in relief.

PANTHERS 4, FLYERS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Evgenii Dadonov scored twice, Roberto Luongo made 39 saves and Florida beat Philadelphia for its season-best sixth straight victory - all at home.

Aleksander Barkov scored his 25th goal of the season and had an assist, and Jonathan Huberdeau added a goal. The Panthers are in the final Eastern Conference playoff position.

Travis Konecny scored for the Flyers, and Petr Mrazek made 22 saves in his sixth straight start. Philadelphia has lost three straight after winning six in a row.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3, DEVILS 2

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Trading deadline acquisition Tomas Tatar scored his first goal with Vegas and the Golden Knights beat New Jersey to avoid their first four-game losing streak.

Deryk Englland and David Perron also scored for the Golden Knights. Marc-Andre Fleury, who stopped a half-dozen excellent chances in the first period, made 33 saves, including a last-second shot by Kyle Palmieri to win for the 22nd time in 33 games.

Taylor Hall had a goal and an assist for New Jersey to extend his points streak to a league-best 19 games. He has a point in the last 25 games he has played. He missed three games with an injury, so the personal streak is longer than the league-recognized run. Sami Vatanen also scored for the Devils.

JETS 3, HURRICANES 2

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Patrik Laine scored twice for the second straight game and extended his points streak to eight in Winnipeg's victory over Carolina.

Laine had his third multi-goal game in the last four games and has seven multi-point nights during his streak. He has 10 goals and six assists in the eight-game stretch, and 35 goals overall.

Paul Stastny had a goal and an assist, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 33 shots for the Jets. Teuvo Teravainen scored for the fourth straight game for the Hurricanes. Jordan Staal also scored.

BLUE JACKETS 4, SHARKS 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Artemi Panarin scored two goals and Columbus ended its California swing with the victory over San Jose.

Nick Foligno and Sonny Milano got Columbus started with first-period goals and Sergei Bobrovsky made 34 saves to help the Blue Jackets salvage the final game of their three-game trip. They remained a point ahead of Florida for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Evander Kane scored his first goal since joining the Sharks, and Joonas Donskoi also scored.

WILD 4, RED WINGS 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal and Zach Parise scored in the second period, Jason Zucker added two late goals and Minnesota beat Detroit.

Devan Dubnyk made 28 saves to help Minnesota rebounds from consecutive road losses at Arizona and Colorado. Staal and Parise scored in a 2:57 span to erase a 1-0 deficit. The goals came shortly after rookie Nick Seeler traded punches with Detroit's Luke Witkowski on a delayed penalty.

Sliding Blues lose Bouwmeester for season, Upshall 4 weeks
March 5, 2018

ST. LOUIS (AP) The free-falling St. Louis Blues will be without defenseman Jay Bouwmeester for the rest of the season with a left hip injury.

General manager Doug Armstrong said Bouwmeester will be sidelined four to six months and that forward Scottie Upshall will be re-evaluated in four weeks after suffering a knee injury.

St. Louis has lost eight of its past 10 games to fall out of the top three in the Central Division and out of a playoff position entirely in the Western Conference.

The 34-year-old Bouwmeester has only dressed in 35 games this season and has two goals and five assists. But he was averaging 20 minutes a game when in the lineup, ice time the Blues will have to make up for.

Upshall, who injured a knee Saturday against Dallas, has seven goals and 11 assists in 61 games.

The Nashville Predators have won eight games in a row and are beginning to open up a bit of a cushion at the top of the Western Conference standings between themselves and the Vegas Golden Knights. Monty Andrews dangles at the hash and goes bar down to give NHL bettors a breakdown of what to watch for this week on the ice.

Renewing Their Rivalry

It's strange that the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres have yet to face each other this season - but they'll make up for lost time in a big way over the final stretch of the season. Toronto and Buffalo square off Monday night at KeyBank Center in the first of four meetings - all of which will take place over the next four weeks. The Maple Leafs enter the week at +1,200 on Bet365 to end their 51-year Stanley Cup championship drought - the sixth-best odds in the league. The Sabres, meanwhile, are headed for another seat at the draft lottery as they find themselves languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

Sunshine Showdown

Two of the hottest teams in the Eastern Conference happen to play in the same state - and those teams also happen to be facing off Tuesday night. Keystone Battle

There's plenty at stake Wednesday night as the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins renew hostilities at Wells Fargo Center Philadelphia. The teams enter the week separated by just point in the Metropolitan Division, though the second-place Flyers have dropped three in a row while the third-place Penguins are coming off an overtime triumph over the New York Islanders. Bettors are getting identical +1,450 odds on Bet365 for either team to win the Stanley Cup; Wednesday marks the third of four meetings this season between the Pennsylvania rivals, with the Penguins having won the first two.

Nashville No. 1

There's a new top team in the Western Conference - and it doesn't look like the Nashville Predators plan on relinquishing that title anytime soon. * Winnipeg Jets netminder Steve Mason is embarking on a conditioning assignment in the American Hockey League as he looks to work his way back to the big club. Mason has missed the last 20 games with a concussion; he's 3-6-1 with Winnipeg this season.

* Alex Ovechkin is in rarefied air after scoring his 40th goal of the season Saturday against Toronto. Ovechkin is just sixth player in league history with nine 40-goal seasons, joining Wayne Gretzky, Marcel Dionne, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy and Mike Gartner.

* New York Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist has become just the third netminder in NHL history to make 50 saves in back-to-back games. Lundqvist won both games (against Calgary and Vancouver) after having lost his previous five starts.

Injury Updates

* Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel has resumed skating and is hoping to return before the end of the season. Eichel, who leads the team with 53 points, has missed the past 10 games with a high ankle sprain; Buffalo is 12-13-7 SU when he records a point.

* The Edmonton Oilers have welcomed back center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins after he had missed the previous 18 games with an upper-body injury. The Oilers struggled mightily in Nugent-Hopkins' absence, going just 7-10-1 SU over that stretch.

* Montreal Canadiens winger Max Pacioretty was forced to miss his first game of the season over the weekend after suffering a leg injury Friday against the New York Rangers. It isn't known when Pacioretty, who sat out Saturday vs. Boston, will return.

Stanley Cup Futures

* Nashville might be the hottest team going, but Tampa Bay remains the club to beat according to oddsmakers. The Lightning come into the week at +450 to win their second Stanley Cup championship in franchise history, according to Bet365.

* The Eastern Conference dominates the top end of the odds ledger, placing six teams among the top nine. Boston (+675) is the second-best East play behind Tampa, with Toronto (+1,200), Washington (+1,400), Pittsburgh and Philadelphia close behind.

* The New Jersey Devils are a solid live underdog play at +2,500. Not only do they boast an MVP candidate in winger Taylor Hall, but they welcomed starting netminder Cory Schneider back to the fold after he had missed 16 games with a groin injury.

Betting Trends

* Home teams have had a dominant seven-day stretch, winning better than 65 percent of games in that span as of Saturday night. That gives the home side a 55.6-percent win rate on the season.

* Totals setters are patting themselves on the back after yet another great week; the league saw 23 overs over the seven-day period ending Saturday night, compared to 22 unders. Overs have an ever-so-slight 492-489 edge on the season.

Penguins continue OT dominance in win over Flames
March 5, 2018

PITTSBURGH (AP) Justin Schultz took a pass from Phil Kessel and buried it in the wide-open net 2:36 into overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames on Monday night.

Tristan Jarry made several key stops for the Penguins early in the extra period, and Schultz's fourth goal of the season helped Pittsburgh improve to 10-1 in overtime at home this season.

Evgeni Malkin scored his 37th goal for the Penguins and added an assist. Kris Letang and Chad Ruhwedel also scored for Pittsburgh. Jarry finished with 35 saves as the Penguins pulled within one point of Washington for first in the crowded Metropolitan Division.

Mark Giordano, Mikael Backlund and Troy Brouwer scored for the Flames, who outplayed the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions for long stretches before dropping their fourth straight. Jon Gillies stopped 28 shots but had no chance when Kessel slid a cross-ice pass to a wide-open Schultz.

SABRES 5, MAPLE LEAFS 3

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Ryan O'Reilly and Zemgus Girgensons scored 2:05 apart in the second period, and Buffalo sent Toronto to its fourth straight loss.

Sam Reinhart, Jason Pominville and Johan Larsson also scored for Buffalo. Rasmus Ristolainen had two assists on consecutive shots from the right point that were deflected in during the opening four minutes.

The Sabres improved to 7-5-2 in their last 14, a stretch in which the Eastern Conference's last-place team continues playing havoc with playoff contenders. Buffalo has now defeated each of the Atlantic Division's three top teams, including Boston twice, over the past three weeks.

Leo Komarov had two goals and Mitch Marner also scored for Toronto. The Maple Leafs dropped to 0-2-2 in their past four to match their longest skid of the season.

OILERS 4, COYOTES 3, OT

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Oscar Klefbom's first goal in 34 games came in overtime, giving Edmonton the victory over Arizona.

Klefbom scored for the first time since Dec. 9.

Jujhar Khaira, Milan Lucic and Jesse Puljujarvi also scored for the Oilers, who snapped a three-game skid.

Jason Demers, Christian Dvorak and Niklas Hjalmarsson replied for the Coyotes, whose two-game winning streak ended.

SENATORS 3, STARS 2, OT

DALLAS (AP) - Erik Karlsson scored on a breakaway with 2:19 left in overtime and Ottawa beat Dallas.

Karlsson picked up a loose puck after a missed Dallas opportunity and beat goalie Kari Lehtonen.

Stars goalie Ben Bishop left because of a lower-body injury after making 12 saves in the first period. Lehtonen replaced Bishop and had 15 saves.

Ottawa's Craig Anderson made 31 saves.

Dallas' Tyler Seguin scored twice, on the power play in the first period and from the top of the right faceoff circle with 1:02 left in the third period to tie it.

Goals by Mike Hoffman on the power play in the second period and Matt Duchene in the third gave Ottawa a 2-1 lead.

CANUCKS 4, ISLANDERS 3, OT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Brendan Leipsic scored his second goal of the game 2:47 into overtime to lift Vancouver over New York.

Darren Archibald scored on a penalty shot, and Jake Virtanen also had a goal as Vancouver snapped a three-game skid. Jacob Markstrom stopped 31 shots.

Josh Bailey, John Tavares and Jordan Eberle scored for New York, which lost a season-worst seventh straight game. The Islanders remain five points behind Columbus for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Jaroslav Halak made 19 saves for the Islanders.
