Catch a Predator

For the longest time, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights were the talk of the league, with the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins and defending Western Conference champ Nashville Predators on the back burner. The Pens are sitting at 80 points, second place in the Metropolitan Division, but well back of the overall leaders. However, the Nashville Predators have streaked their way to the top of the Western Conference, leading the Winnipeg Jets by six points in the Central Division with 16 left to play. The Preds are on a nine-game winning streak and showing no signs of slowing down.

Tropical Depression

The Carolina Hurricanes are now under new ownership, but the story remains the same. The Canes are on the outside looking in after a 6-2 drumming from their former captain Eric Staal and the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. Carolina heads into Wednesday's action down four points to the Columbus Blue Jackets, who hold the No. 8 spot in the East. The Florida Panthers are also right in the mix with 71 points, and they have three games in hand on Carolina. In fact, there are four teams within seven points of the Jackets, so the Hurricanes have plenty of company and can ill-afford any losses. They're 2-6-2 and losing their grip on a wild-card spot, which will not sit well with an increasingly angry fan base in the Raleigh/Durham area.

Looking Ahead

Friday, March 9

The Wild and Canucks will tangle in the Pacific Northwest. It is the third meeting between these teams, and while the Canucks have won each of the first two battles, both contests remained in one-goal results. Vancouver won 3-2 in overtime in the most recent meeting on Jan. 14 in St. Paul, and Anders Nilsson and the Canucks blanked the Wild 1-0 on Oct. 24. In the past five meetings, the Wild have managed to pick up just one victory, which is amazing considering the disparity in the standings between these two clubs over the past couple of seasons.

Saturday, March 10

It's an Original Six battle on Saturday afternoon in Beantown, and we have two clubs going in completely opposite directions. The Blackhawks are normally at or near the top of the Western Conference standings and contending, but it's been a trying season with a turnstile in the crease since Corey Crawford went down. The Bruins won 6-5 on Tuesday night to stay hot, winning their fourth consecutive game. Three of those contests resulted in overtime, and 16 of their games have resulted in overtime or a shootout this season. Boston has won seven of the past eight at home, while Chicago has won consecutive games just twice since Jan. 10. They haven't won three in a row since cobbling together a season-best five-game winning streak from Dec. 8-17.

The New York Rangers and Florida Panthers battle in Sunrise on Saturday night, and these are two of a handful of teams jockeying for the No. 7 or 8 playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. This is the third meeting this season, and both games have resulted in 5-4 scores. The Panthers won 5-4 in regulation at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 28, while the Rangers won on the Panthers home ice on Nov. 4 in overtime. The road team has won five in a row in this series, with the home team last winning when the Rangers took a 4-2 decision at MSG back on March 21, 2016.

The Dallas Stars are struggling on offense, the Toronto Maple Leafs are really missing Auston Matthews, and the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks meet for a pair of afternoon games this weekend. We break down all of the betting angles you'll need to know for this weekend's action with our NHL Cheat Sheet.

No O in Big D

The Dallas Stars have been one of the more reliable Over plays for most of the season - but things have changed over the past 2 1/2 weeks as the Stars prepare for a Friday night encounter with the visiting Anaheim Ducks. The Stars have gone below the total in seven of their previous 10 games, including four shutouts over that span; Dallas has been on the right end of two of those shutouts, and blanked in the other two. And there's a good bet that stretch will continue Friday night, with Anaheim coming into the game as one of only three teams with 40 or more Unders on the season.

Bad Time for a Bad Stretch

The Toronto Maple Leafs are finding life without Auston Matthews a lot more difficult this time around than they did earlier in the season - and they'll likely be without their electrifying center as they entertain the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night. Matthews has missed the past five games with a shoulder ailment, and Toronto has gone just 1-2-2 in that span while carrying a four-game losing skid into Saturday's encounter. The Penguins head to the Ontario capital on a three-game winning streak and have prevailed nine of their last 12 games overall, including a 5-3 win over Toronto on Feb. 17.

Original Six Showdown

Two of the NHL's oldest franchises will do battle this weekend as the Boston Bruins and the Chicago Blackhawks take part in a rare home-and-home matinee series. The Bruins have been one of the hottest teams in the league since the All-Star Break and have positioned themselves as a terrific bet to win the Stanley Cup, presently installed at +650 on Bet365 - behind only the Tampa Bay Lightning and Nashville Predators. Things haven't been nearly as rosy for the Blackhawks, who find themselves at the bottom of the Central Division race and will likely one of the first Western Conference teams eliminated from postseason contention.

Player Notes

* The Carolina Hurricanes have made a front-office shake-up, removing Ron Francis as general manager and reassigning him to president of hockey operations. The Hurricanes enter Thursday night four points out of the second East wild-card spot.

* The Boston Bruins will be without forward David Backes through the weekend after he was given a three-game suspension for a hit on Detroit Red Wings forward Frans Nielsen. It's the first time Backes has been suspended in his NHL career.

* The Chicago Blackhawks have rewarded Jan Rutta for a solid season, signing the 27-year-old to a one-year contract extension worth $2.25 million. Rutta entered Thursday night with six goals and 13 assists in 43 games this season.

Injury Updates

* Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele is considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury suffered Tuesday against the New York Rangers. The Jets are 13-3 SU and 11-5 O/U in games in which Scheifele has found the back of the net this season.

* The Philadelphia Flyers have welcomed forward Wayne Simmonds back to the lineup after he missed eight games with an upper-body injury. The Flyers won their first four games with Simmonds on the sidelines, then promptly lost the next four.

* Injured Calgary Flames netminder Mike Smith has joined the team on its three-game road trip but isn't sure when he'll be back in the lineup. Smith, who hasn't played since Feb. 11 against the New York Islanders, is 23-16-6 with a 2.53 goals-against average.

Stanley Cup Futures

* The Tampa Bay Lightning remain the team to beat in oddsmakers' eyes. The NHL's overall points leaders are installed as +425 favorites on Bet365 to win their second Stanley Cup title; Nashville is a close second in the odds race at +500.

* The Toronto Maple Leafs' recent struggles have dropped their odds to +1,300 - sixth-best in the league, and fourth among Eastern Conference contenders. They're one spot ahead of the Penguins (+1,400), who visit Air Canada Centre on Saturday.

* Don't count out the Minnesota Wild, whose sensational second half of the season has pushed them into live underdog status. The Wild have moved all the way up to +1,700 on Bet365, the fourth-best odds among Western Conference teams.

Betting Trends

* Host teams have been particularly dominant of late, going 31-14-4 - a 63.3-percent success rate - over the seven-day period ending Wednesday. That gives the home side a 56.4-percent win rate over the past 30 days, and 55.8 percent for the season.

* Over has been the stronger play over the most recent seven-day stretch, with 27 games exceeding the total and 21 going Under. That puts the count at 504 Overs compared to 499 Unders so far in 2017-18.

* You won't find many better Under plays at this point in the season than the Detroit Red Wings, who have gone below the total in 14 of their previous 18 games entering Thursday night. They're the first Eastern Conference team to surpass 40 Unders.

* Colorado's value to bettors has depended almost entirely on where the Avalanche have played. The Denver-based franchise has returned a league-best 1,278 units at Pepsi Center, but is at -274 units in 32 games away from Colorado.

Surging Blue Jackets edge Red Wings 3-2 for 4th straight win
March 9, 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Seth Jones scored twice in the second period and Sergei Bobrovsky returned from an illness to make 22 saves as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 on Friday night.

Matt Calvert also scored for the surging Blue Jackets, who have won four in a row and remain firmly in the Eastern Conference playoff picture with 13 games to go. Columbus swept a back-to-back, surpassed New Jersey to grab the first wild-card spot and moved to within two points of Philadelphia for third place in the Metropolitan Division.

Darren Helm and Andreas Athanasiou scored, and Jared Coreau, in just his second start of the season, had 33 stops for the reeling Red Wings, losers of six straight.

STARS 2, DUCKS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Devin Shore and Jamie Benn scored power-play goals in the third period and the Dallas Stars beat the Anaheim Ducks.

With the game tied at 1, Benn tipped John Klingberg's shot from the top of the slot past Anaheim's Ryan Miller for the go-ahead goal with 5:37 remaining.

Ryan Getzlaf scored Anaheim's goal in the first period.

Both teams entered with 80 points, but Dallas increased its lead for the first wild card from the Western Conference to three points over Los Angeles. Anaheim remained one point ahead of the Kings for third place in the Pacific Division.

FLAMES 2, SENATORS 1

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Sam Bennett and Matt Stajan scored and David Rittich made 29 saves to lead the Calgary Flames past the Ottawa Senators.

The win was the second straight for the Flames, who ended a four-game losing streak with a victory in Buffalo on Wednesday night.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau spoiled Rittich's bid for his first career shutout by scoring on a penalty shot with 7:05 left in the game.

Mike Condon made 35 saves for the Senators, including a breakaway stop on Johnny Gaudreau with the score still 1-0 in Calgary's favor early in the third period.

WILD 5, CANUCKS 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Eric Staal scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and the Minnesota Wild surged past the Vancouver Canucks.

Staal has 11 goals in his last nine games, giving him 37 for the season - just three behind Washington's Alex Ovechkin for the league lead.

Zach Parise, Matt Cullen, Marcus Foligno and Charlie Coyle, with an empty-netter, also scored for the Wild, who have won three straight and eight of their past 10. Minnesota leads Dallas by three points for third in the Central Division and trails Winnipeg by six points for second. Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves.

Michael Del Zotto and Jussi Jokinen scored for the Canucks, who wrapped up a five-game homestand with a 1-2-2 record.

Flyers overcome Laine's 40th, beat Jets 2-1
March 10, 2018

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Claude Giroux and Andrew MacDonald scored in the second period and the Philadelphia Flyers overcame Patrik Laine's 40th goal of the season in a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday that snapped a five-game losing streak.

Laine moved into a tie with Washington's Alex Ovechkin for the most goals in the league when he scored on a one-timer on the power play at 8:58 of the third period. The 19-year-old Finn has 15 goals and six assists during an 11-game point streak.

Petr Mrazek stopped 27 shots for the Flyers, bouncing back from a stretch of 18 goals allowed in four games.

Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves for the Jets, who saw their four-game winning streak end.

BRUINS 7, BLACKHAWKS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Brian Gionta and Rick Nash each scored a power-play goal and Boston completed a 6-0-0 homestand.

Gionta and Nash got their goals during a double-minor penalty on Chicago's Patrick Kane.

Jake DeBrusk set up two power-play goals by David Krejci. David Pastrnak scored, Noel Acciari had a short-handed tally and Sean Kuraly added an empty-netter for Boston. Tuukka Rask made 23 saves on his 31st birthday.

Erik Gustafsson had a goal and two assists, and Jonathan Toews, John Hayden and Matthew Highmore scored for Chicago, which lost for the fifth time in seven games. Highmore's was his first in the NHL.

The Bruins had four power-play goals.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Nikita Kucherov scored the deciding goal in the fourth round of the shootout, lifting Tampa Bay past Montreal.

Tyler Johnson scored his 20th of the season. Kucherov tied it late in the third with his 34th . Louis Domingue made 27 saves and stopped three of four attempts in the shootout.

Brayden Point also scored in the shootout for Tampa Bay, his 10th conversion in 15 career shootout attempts.

Artturi Lehkonen and Alex Galchenyuk scored for Montreal. Charles Hudon set a career high with two assists. Antti Niemi finished with 32 saves, including all three in overtime.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2, SABRES 1, SO

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Erik Haula scored the decisive shootout goal and Vegas set an NHL record for road victories by an expansion team.

Golden Knights defenseman Deryk Engelland forced overtime by scoring the tying goal from a bad angle with 4:14 left in regulation. Marc-Andre Fleury won his 399th career game by stopping 31 shots through overtime.

After both teams traded shootout goals, Haula scored in the fifth round by driving up the right side and beating goalie Robin Lehner on the short side.

Justin Bailey scored for Buffalo. Lehner finished with 31 saves in the loss.

The Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights improved their road record to 20-12-3, to beat the league record of 19 set by Anaheim in 1993-94, its inaugural season. The Golden Knights, 44-19-5, have already set NHL expansion-team records for most overall wins, home wins, points and longest winning streak - an 8-0 run from Dec. 14 to Jan. 2.

AVALANCHE 5, COYOTES 2

DENVER (AP) - Blake Comeau and Carl Soderberg each had a goal and an assist in a first-period burst, and Colorado goalie Jonathan Bernier won his ninth straight home game but left in the third period for an undisclosed reason.

Tyson Barrie also scored early as Colorado had three goals in the opening 4:22 to take a 3-1 advantage. The Avalanche rode the torrid start to another win at the Pepsi Center, where they've gone 14-1-1 since Dec. 29.

Tyson Jost and Mikko Rantanen scored in the third to seal the win and help Colorado snap a streak of three straight overtime losses. The team remains in the thick of the playoff chase a season after finishing last in the league.

Christian Dvorak and Richard Panik added goals for Arizona, a surging team that's gone 9-3-2 in over its last 14 games.

Washington was outscored 7-1 in losses to Anaheim and Los Angeles to open the trip before a narrow win in San Jose moved the Capitals one point ahead of Pittsburgh for first place in the Metropolitan Division, pending the Penguins' game in Toronto.

Alex Ovechkin, two goals short of 600 for Washington, was held scoreless for the third straight game. Marc-Edouard Vlasic thwarted one chance for Ovechkin to get goal No. 599 with a strong back check and goalie Martin Jones robbed Ovechkin on a partial breakaway midway through the third period to keep San Jose's deficit at 1-0.

Lars Eller's empty-net goal sealed the win for the Capitals.

BLUES 7, KINGS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The struggling St. Louis Blues got goals from seven players and handed Los Angeles its worst defeat of the season.

Robert Bortuzzo, Colton Parayko, Alex Pietrangelo, Ivan Barbashev, Vladimir Tarasenko, Kyle Brodziak and Jaden Schwartz scored for the Blues, who had lost nine of 10. Jake Allen made 40 saves.

The loss left Los Angeles one point back of Colorado for the second Western Conference wild card, and two points ahead of St. Louis. The Kings had not lost by more than four goals all season.

Drew Doughty and Dustin Brown scored for the Kings. Jonathan Quick made 29 saves before he was pulled after the second period. Jack Campbell stopped 14 of 17 shots in the third.

The Blues, shut out in their previous game against San Jose, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period.
