Vegas takes a bit of a gamble with Tatar deal
February 28, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Of all the clubs that made deals before the NHL's trade deadline, a surprise team took perhaps the biggest gamble.

The expansion Vegas Golden Knights.

They rolled the dice by trading three high draft picks for Red Wings left wing Tomas Tatar.

Vegas has set records for wins and points by a first-year team and is tied with Nashville atop the Western Conference at 87 points. Because of that, the Golden Knights were unexpected buyers at Monday's deadline. General manager George McPhee said the move made sense because the picks are spread out over four drafts and Tatar is under team control through the 2020-21 season.

One high-profile player who didn't get dealt was Ottawa Senators star Erik Karlsson. The defenseman, who can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2018-19 season, said he hopes to sign a new deal to stay in Ottawa. Talks on an extension can begin July 1.

''I've been here for a long time,'' he said before Ottawa's game at Washington on Tuesday night. ''I've made Ottawa my home and it's always going to be my home.''

In all, NHL teams made 18 trades involving 37 players before the deadline on Monday afternoon.

Contending teams such as Tampa Bay, Nashville and Boston all gave up first-round draft picks for a chance to upgrade and make a run at the Stanley Cup.

The Bruins made the first big move on Sunday when they acquired forward Rick Nash from the New York Rangers. Nash could be counted on for immediate offensive help after the team announced Tuesday that top center and leading goal-scorer Patrice Bergeron is out a minimum of two weeks with a broken right foot.

The Lightning, the Bruins' rival in the Atlantic Division, also made a major deal with the rebuilding Rangers. Tampa Bay acquired defenseman Ryan McDonagh and forward J.T. Miller for Vladimir Namestnikov, two prospects and two high draft picks. McDonagh and Miller will join former New York teammates Anton Stralman, Ryan Callahan and Dan Girardi with Tampa Bay.

The Rangers will now focus on their rebuild. They have three first-round picks, two second-round picks, two third-round picks, a fourth, a fifth and a sixth for a total of 10 picks in the June draft.

In the Western Conference, the Predators, trying to return to the Stanley Cup Final, acquired Ryan Hartman from the Central Division-rival Blackhawks for a prospect and two draft picks. The price was considered steep for Hartman, who had eight goals and 25 points and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Hartman paid immediate dividends, though, scoring the winning goal with a minute left Tuesday night in a 6-5 victory over second-place Winnipeg.

''I'm going to a team that has a real chance this year,'' Hartman said Monday. ''They made it all the way to the finals last year and made a really good run. I'm just excited to get down there and to get playing.''

Winnipeg, four points behind the Predators, also made a deal with a division rival when the Jets acquired forward Paul Stastny from the St. Louis Blues. The current Jets have never won a playoff game, but have a deep and talented roster capable of making a serious playoff run this spring.

''When I first caught wind of that it was a possibility, even just the possibility was really exciting,'' Jets forward Blake Wheeler said after the deal was announced.

''I think what he brings to our team is something that will be really helpful for us, plug a number of holes.''

The move was surprising for St. Louis, which despite entering the deadline on a six-game losing streak, began Tuesday only one point out of a playoff spot.

Among the contending teams that were quiet on Monday were the surging Philadelphia Flyers. They added goalie Petr Mrazek last week in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings.

The Flyers, who had a 10-game losing streak (0-5-5) earlier this season, are one point behind first-place Washington in the Metropolitan Division. The Flyers are 10-0-1 since the Eagles won the Super Bowl in an upset over the New England Patriots.

''You've got a chemistry in your room, so to make a deal, it's got to be the right player, it's got to be the right price, and it's got to be a clear upgrade,'' Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said Monday. ''Otherwise you're affecting the chemistry in your room. So for a number of reasons, we had some conversations, but nothing made sense for us.''

The two-time defending champion Penguins bolstered their forward group by acquiring center Derick Brassard in a three-team deal last week. However, the Penguins will now have to get by without starting goalie Matt Murray, who is out with a concussion.

THEY SAID IT

''Every year it seems the last year a couple teams traded first-round picks and maybe they didn't win doing that and (you think), `No one's going to do that again.' Well, they did. It's the parity of the league, it's the competition, and teams want to win.'' - New Jersey Devils general manager Ray Shero on teams giving up first-round draft picks at the trade deadline.

Pominville scores in OT, Sabres beat NHL-best Lightning
February 28, 2018

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Jason Pominville scored on a power play at 1:26 of overtime to give the Buffalo Sabres a 2-1 victory over the NHL-leading Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night.

Pominville beat Andrei Vasilevskiy with a one-timer from the left circle to give the Sabres their second straight victory over the Lightning.

Evan Rodrigues tied it for Buffalo in the third, and Chad Johnson stopped 21 shots.

Cory Conacher scored for Tampa Bay, and Vasilevskiy made 32 saves. With a point in the standings for the overtime loss, the Lightning became the first team to reach 90 points this season.

CANADIENS 3, ISLANDERS 1

MONTREAL (AP) - Jonathan Drouin and Nikita Scherbak scored in the second period and Montreal beat New York to extend its points streak to five games.

Paul Byron also scored and Antti Niemi made 27 saves to help the Canadiens improve to 2-0-3 in their last five. Mathew Barzal scored his 18th of the season for the Islanders. They are winless in last four games and 4-8-2 in their last 14.

BLUES 2, RED WINGS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Carter Hutton made 35 saves, Scottie Upshall and Alex Pietrangelo scored and St. Louis beat Detroit to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Hutton improved to 6-2-1 in his last nine starts and 16-7-2 overall, allowing only Andreas Athanasiou's goal with 1:45 left.

AVALANCHE 4, FLAMES 2

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon and Tyson Barrie each had a goal and an assist in Colorado's victory over Calgary.

Matt Nieto and Nikita Zadorov also scored, and Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves. The Avalanche have won 11 of 12 home games. Mikael Backlund and Michael Frolik scored for Calgary.

RANGERS 6, CANUCKS 5, OT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - John Gilmour scored from a sharp angle 1:22 into overtime and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made a season-high 50 saves to help the Rangers beat the Canucks.

Vancouver's Brock Boeser forced overtime when he scored his second goal of the night with 45.9 seconds left. The Canucks had pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker.

Mika Zibanejad had given New York a 5-4 lead less than five minutes earlier.

Kevin Hayes scored twice for the Rangers (28-30-6), who snapped a seven-game losing streak. Vladislav Namestnikov, obtained in a multi-player trade from Tampa Bay on Monday, had a goal and an assist. Jimmy Vesey had the other New York goal while Ryan Spooner had three assists.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Six highest-paid college basketball coaches:

1) Mike Krzyzewski, Duke: $8,982,325

2) John Calipari, Kentucky: $7,994,147

3) Chris Holtmann, Ohio State: $7,149,849

4) Bill Self, Kansas: $4,954,877

5) Tom Izzo, Michigan State: $4,359,979

6) Sean Miller, Arizona: $4,054,853

Quote of the Day

?I will never turn my back on you. EVER! You are one of the best coaches I?ve ever had and easily the best person I?ve ever come in contact with!???
TJ McConnell, talking about his college coach, Arizona?s Sean Miller

Thursday?s quiz

Whose picture is on the $100 bill?

Wednesday?s quiz

Mike Krzyzewski played his college basketball at West Point.

Tuesday?s quiz
Ulysses S Grant?s picture is on the $50 bill.

**************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud?..

13) St Bonaventure 117, Davidson 113, 3OT? Probably the best college hoop game this season was played Tuesday night; five players scored 30+ points. Six players fouled out. These teams are lined up to meet again in the A-14 semi-finals next week in Washington, DC.

12) Speaking of which, this is a year where several conference tournaments are in unusual places; ACC is in Brooklyn, Big 14 is in Manhattan, A-14 is in Washington, SEC is in St Louis.

11) One of the things about college basketball is that once you beat a team, you need that team to do well, so it helps your power rating.

Case in point: Boise State will be a bubble team if they don?t win the Mountain West- they?ve got a win at Oregon, so it would greatly help the Broncos if Oregon could work its way into the top 60 or even higher.

10) NIT will have some experimental rules this season; games will be four quarters, and 3-point arc will be moved out a little bit. The four-quarter thing looks like it will happen at some point in men?s basketball, maybe 2019-20? the women?s game already plays four quarters.

9) All-time major league record for pinch-hit home runs:
Matt Stairs 23, Cliff Johnson 20, Jerry Lynch 18.

Stairs is the new hitting coach for San Diego- he was the Phillies? hitting coach last year.

8) Shareef O?Neal (Shaq?s son) quickly moved on from Arizona to UCLA for his college choice.

4) Took the NFL about 90 minutes to move on from Papa John?s to Pizza Hut as official pizza of the league; best thing about this? Lot fewer Peyton Manning commercials.

7) Mark Few makes $1,934,104 a year at Gonzaga; he is happy where he is, and you can?t buy happy, but he is leaving a lot of money on the table. If Few let it be known that he wanted to be a much higher-paid coach, lot of the big-money schools would be lining up pretty quickly.

6) Chicago Bears will cut backup QB Mike Glennon after only one year and four starts; Glennon made $18.5M for his time in the Windy City, so hard to feel bad for the guy.

5) There were two upsets in the NEC tournament last night; #2-seed Mt St Mary lost to Robert Morris, and #3-seed St Francis PA lost to FDU, first time since 2003 that the #2-3 seeds both lost in the first round.

3) If you?re Sam Darnold, why wouldn?t you throw at the NFL Combine? Quarterbacks shouldn?t back away from any challenges/competition.

2) Random question: if UConn hired Geno Auriemma to be its men?s basketball coach next year, how would he do? Huskies will probably make a coaching change; their program is a mess right now, going 30-33 the last two years.

1? Someone ran a poll on Twitter the other day, asking who was the most influential teacher they have ever had. It got hundreds of responses, some of which were ?none? but it was cool to see that most people were grateful to teachers who helped them when they were younger.

Lot of time kids graduate and go on their way and never thank the people who helped them.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Outdoor naval battle featuring Eastern Conference powers
****************

The NHL's Stadium Series has brought professional hockey to some truly unique locales - but Saturday's encounter between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals takes the sport to a whole new place. We break down all of the betting angles you'll need to know for this weekend's action with our NHL Cheat Sheet.

What Could Have Been

Vegas fans were hoping to have Erik Karlsson in a Golden Knights jersey - but they'll have to settle for having one of the league's premier defensemen visiting in an Ottawa uniform as he leads the Senators into Sin City for a Friday night encounter. Karlsson was considered the biggest prize ahead of Monday's trade deadline, but the Senators opted to hang onto him; the Golden Knights, who entered Wednesday night at +750 on Bet365 to win the Stanley Cup in their inaugural season, were considered the front-runners for his services. Karlsson is under contract through the end of the 2018-19 season.

Eastern Conference Naval Battle

The NHL's Stadium Series has brought professional hockey to some truly unique locales - but Saturday's encounter between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals takes the sport to a whole new place. The Maple Leafs and Capitals will do battle outdoors on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. It's the last of three meetings between the Eastern Conference powers, with the teams having split their first two encounters. It's also a rematch of last year's entertaining opening-round playoff matchup, won by the Capitals in six games.

Philly's Florida Adventure

The Philadelphia Flyers have streaked their way into the mix for top spot in the Metropolitan Division - and they'll look to snag a pivotal four points this coming weekend as they visit the Sunshine State. The Flyers take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena on Saturday before heading to Sunrise for a Sunday encounter with the Florida Panthers. Philadelphia has been one of the strongest road teams in the conference at 18-10-4 entering the weekend - and will be looking to secure a pair of season series victories, having split their first two meetings with both teams.

Player News

* The San Jose Sharks have rewarded goaltender Aaron Dell, signing the late bloomer to a two-year contract extension worth $3.8 million. The 29-year-old has been a revelation, going 14-5-3 with a 2.71 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.

* After failing to find a trade partner for Mike Green, the Detroit Red Wings are reportedly interested in signing the veteran blue-liner to a contract extension. Green has six goals and 23 assists through 56 games but has been hampered by an upper-body injury.

* The Pittsburgh Penguins have locked up an important member of their top-six forward corps, signing Patric Hornqvist to a five-year extension worth an average of $5.3 million per season. Hornqvist sits seventh on the team in scoring heading into the weekend.

Injury Updates

* The NHL's leading scorer might be out of commission through the weekend. Tampa Bay forward Nikita Kucherov, who leads the Art Ross Trophy race with 82 points, is out with an undisclosed upper-body injury; the team has confirmed it is not a concussion.

* The Penguins' latest forward sensation will be out indefinitely after suffering an injury in practice. Rookie Zach Aston-Reese sustained an upper-body injury in a morning skate and will be out "longer term", according to head coach Mike Sullivan.

* Columbus Blue Jackets winger Josh Anderson is expected to miss about a month after suffering a knee sprain earlier this week against the Capitals. The 23-year-old has recorded 18 goals and 11 assists through his first 61 games this season.

Stanley Cup Futures

* Losing their leading scorer hasn't affected the Lightning's Stanley Cup odds - at least, not yet. Tampa Bay comes into the weekend at +450 on Bet365 to win the Stanley Cup, well ahead of the runner-up Nashville Predators (+650).

* There's quite a battle brewing for the top Stanley Cup title odds among Canadian teams. The Toronto Maple Leafs (+1,000) remain the best bet to end the north's lengthy championship drought, with the Winnipeg Jets close behind at +1,200.

* Life comes at you fast - just ask the St. Louis Blues, who were a live underdog just a few weeks ago but entered Wednesday on a seven-game losing skid and traded away forward Paul Stastny to Winnipeg. The Blues are now +3,500 to win the title.

Betting Trends

* Oddmakers have nailed the totals so far this season. Entering Wednesday night, there have been as many overs (450) as unders (450); better than 55 percent of games that have gone into extra time have wound up below the total.

* No team has produced more value for over bettors over the past month than the Lightning, who entered Wednesday's encounter with Detroit having gone 13-2-1 O/U in their past 16 games. Tampa Bay is 40-22-1 O/U for the season.

* Colorado's value to bettors has depended almost entirely on where the Avalanche have played. The Denver-based franchise has returned a league-best 1,278 units at Pepsi Center, but is at -274 units in 32 games away from Colorado.

Hurricanes snap six-game losing streak, beat Flyers 4-1
March 2, 2018

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Justin Williams scored two goals, Cam Ward stopped 21 shots and the Carolina Hurricanes snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night.

The Flyers had been the hottest team in hockey, winners of six straight overall and riding a 10-0-2 streak for their longest span without a regulation loss since 2003.

They were even 4-0-1 against the Hurricanes in their last five against them at home.

Carolina made quick work in ending the good times in Philly.

Williams knocked in a loose puck 4:40 into the game and the former Flyer stuck it to his former team one more time.

BRUINS 8, PENGUINS 4

BOSTON (AP) - David Krejci had his fourth career hat trick, David Pastrnak had two goals and an assist, and the Bruins had their highest-scoring game since 2012, beating the Penguins.

One night after the Boston Celtics posted a season-high 134 points in the same building, the Bruins had their biggest offensive output of the year.

Pittsburgh's Ollie Matta scored just 35 into the game, but from there on it was mostly Bruins. Boston led 2-1 before the three-minute mark, 3-1 after six minutes and 5-2 with just under four minutes to play in the first before Riley Sheahan scored with 4 seconds to play in the period.

The Bruins added three in the second - two on the power play from Krejci, giving him a hat trick with 25:27 still to play - and one from Pastrnak. It was Krejci's first three-goal game since 2014; he also has had two in the playoffs.

The Bruins have won back-to-back games since the trade deadline, when they acquired Rick Nash and Tommy Wingels and signed Team USA Olympic captain Brian Gionta. Nash had a goal and an assist, and Gionta had two assists.

PANTHERS 3, DEVILS 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Aleksander Barkov scored two goals to lift the Panthers to a win over the Devils.

Maxim Mamin scored his second NHL goal and Robert Luongo made 29 saves as the Panthers recorded their fourth straight win.

Jesper Bratt and Taylor Hall scored for the Devils. Cory Schneider stopped 26 shots in his first start since missing 16 games with a lower-body injury.

Barkov's second goal stretched the Panthers lead to 3-1 with 3:34 left in the third. Barkov lifted the puck over Schneider and into the net.

Bratt's goal closed the score to 3-2 with 2:07 left in the third.

LIGHTNING 5, STARS 4, OT

DALLAS (AP) - Cory Conacher scored with 41 seconds left in overtime, and the Lightning beat the Stars.

Conacher broke away from Dallas' Jamie Benn and took a low shot that bounced off goalie Ben Bishop and went in.

It was the Lightning's fourth game in six nights that went past 60 minutes.

Tampa Bay's Anthony Cirelli had a goal and an assist in the three-goal second period of his NHL debut. The Lightning recalled the 20-year-old Cirelli from Syracuse of the AHL earlier Thursday as an emergency replacement for NHL scoring leader Nikita Kucherov.

Tyler Seguin had two goals and an assist for Dallas, which rallied with two third-period goals.

COYOTES 5, WILD 3

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Richard Panik broke a tie midway through the third period and the Coyotes rallied for another victory over the Wild.

Christian Dvorak, Jakob Chychrun, Kevin Connauton and Jordan Martinook also scored, Max Domi had three assists, and Antti Raanta made 31 saves to help the NHL-worst Coyotes end Minnesota's winning streak at five games.

Arizona also rallied to beat Minnesota the last time they played, scoring the final four goals in a 4-3 overtime victory in St. Paul on Feb. 8. That victory started a 7-2-1 run for the Coyotes.

Zach Parise, Mikko Koivu and Matt Cullen scored for the Wild, and Alex Stalock stopped 21 shots.

PREDATORS 4, OILERS 2

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Viktor Arvidsson scored a pair of goals as the Predators rallied for a victory over the Oilers.

Scott Hartnell and Austin Watson also scored for the Predators, who have won six straight.

Nashville's David Polie earned his 1,320th career win as a general manager, the most in NHL history.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl replied for the Oilers, who have lost two straight.

SHARKS 7, BLACKHAWKS 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Joe Pavelski scored twice and the Sharks reached a season high in goals in a victory over the Blackhawks.

Logan Couture, Timo Meier, Kevin LaBanc, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Barclay Goodrow also scored for the Sharks, who won their second straight at home after dropping three in a row on the road.

Artem Anisimov and Nick Schmaltz scored for the Blackhawks, who lost their seventh straight road game while allowing their most goals this season, matching the seven New Jersey scored on Nov. 12.

Martin Jones stopped 32 shots for San Jose.

KINGS 5, BLUE JACKETS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Alex Iafallo scored two goals to lead the Kings back from an early two-goal deficit and beat the Blue Jackets.

Nate Thompson, Tanner Pearson and Jeff Carter also scored for the Kings, who won their third straight game. Jonathan Quick stopped 30 shots.

Cam Atkinson and Seth Jones scored the early goals for the Blue Jackets. Joonas Korpisalo saved 29 shots on goal for Columbus.

The Kings have won six of their last eight.

I?m not aware of any league inquiries at this time. I would like to see that change in the near future on both levels. I hope we can discuss and meet with the leagues and legislators who are considering or processing sports betting bills. Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) We?ve entered the age of ?guilty until proven innocent.?

I?m talking now about Sean Miller and the situation at Arizona, where ESPN claimed that Miller was caught on an FBI wiretap talking about an illegal payoff for star player DeAndre Ayton.

Problem is, there is no recording of this conversation, no transcript of it, and there isn?t 100% agreement on when this conversation supposedly took place, or whether the player being talked about on the tape in question was even Ayton.

So Miller remains the coach at Arizona, but if he is indeed innocent, where does he go to get his reputation back, since there will always be people that believe he broke the rules?

12) Arizona xx, Stanford xx? Allonzo Trier was cleared to play by the NCAA, so all-around, it was a solid day to be a Wildcat in Tucson.

11) Bartolo Colon pitched for the Rangers Thursday; Luis Urias was the Padres? 2B in the same game. Colon made his major league debut April 3, 1997, two months before Urias was born.

10) Other than who the Rams take, the one thing I?ll be looking for when the NFL Draft rolls around is where Louisville QB Lamar Jackson winds up. My personal opinion is that there is a place for him in the NFL, but I?m just a guy typing on his laptop.

One NFL personnel guy has to risk his career on Jackson being an NFL QB.

9) When the Cleveland Browns interviewed Alabama RB Bo Scarbrough at the NFL Combine, one of the questions they asked him was if he thought God is an Auburn fan.

What does that have to do with anything?

8) Minnesota Vikings went 13-3 this past season, their best record in 19 years, but it is likely that none of their three QB?s from last year will be on their 2018 roster.

Case Keenum had a great season, but it looks like Minnesota will let him test the free agent market; Sam Bradford?s knee is so bad that they?d be stupid to sign him- Mike Zimmer called it ?degenerative?, and Teddy Bridgewater had a non-contact injury in 2016 that he still may not be fully recovered from. All three of those quarterbacks are free agents, and all three will likely be elsewhere in a few months.

7) Bruins led Pittsburgh after the first period Thursday night; it was most goals scored in first period of an NHL game since Arizona led Nashville 6-3 after first period on March 28, 2013.

6) RB?s Saquon Barkley, Nick Chubb did 29 bench press reps at the NFL Combine.

Barkley and Chubb had more reps than all but five of the 36 offensive linemen to bench press at the Combine this year.

5) No quarterback who played at USC has ever started a Super Bowl.

QB?s from Fresno State, Arizona, Morehead State, Northern Iowa, Navy, Southern Miss and Grambling have all won Super Bowls.

4) This from covers.com:
?Nevada has seen explosive popularity in sports betting over the past decade. The annual handle rose from $2.8 billion in 2010 to $4.9 billion in 2017???

3) If you care about such things, Lee Westwood has the most career earnings at The Masters without ever having won the tournament. Justin Rose is 2nd, Ernie Els is 3rd on that list.

2) University of Nevada has only seven healthy scholarship basketball players right now; they?ve added three walk-ons in the last month, including two WR?s from the football team. Adding the walk-ons allows them to practice 5-on-5 at least.

1? Our thoughts/prayers go out to Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly, who once again is battling cancer. He?s a tough guy; we wish him well in this latest battle.

Patrik Laine scores twice, Jets past Red Wings 4-3
March 2, 2018

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Henrik Lundqvist became the first goalie to stop 50 or more shots in consecutive victories since the NHL began tracking saves in 1955, lifting New York over the Calgary Flames 3-1 on Friday night.

Lundqvist tied a career high with 50 stops on his 36th birthday. He is the first Rangers goalie with 50 saves in consecutive games since Gump Worsley on Jan. 27 and 30, 1963.

No Rangers goalie had made 50 saves in a win since Mike Richter in 1996 before Lundqvist beat Vancouver 6-5 in overtime Wednesday night.

Recently acquired center Ryan Spooner led New York with a goal and an assist. The 26-year-old has one goal and six assists in three games since he was part of a package traded to the Rangers from Boston for Rick Nash.

Kevin Hayes and Pavel Buchnevich also scored for New York.

JETS 4, RED WINGS 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Patrik Laine scored his 32rd and 33rd goals of the season to help Winnipeg beat Detroit.

Dustin Byfuglien and Ben Chiarot also scored and Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves for his 33rd victory of the season. Winnipeg has won six of its last eight games to improve to 38-17-9.

Niklas Kronwall, Anthony Mantha and Trevor Daley scored for Detroit, and Jimmy Howard stopped 38 shots.

AVALANCHE 7, WILD 1

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon had two goals and three assists, Mikko Rantanen had a goal and three assists and Colorado beat Minnesota.

The five points were a career high for MacKinnon, who also set personal bests in goals (31) and assists (45) for the season. He reached the 30-goal plateau for the first time in his five-year career.

Tyson Barrie had a goal and an assist, and Gabriel Landeskog, Carl Soderberg and Matt Nieto also scored to help Colorado gain ground in the Western Conference playoff race with its 13 win in 14 home games.

HURRICANES 3, DEVILS 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Teuvo Teravainen and Justin Williams scored in the third period and Carolina overcame yet another goal by New Jersey's Taylor Hall.

Teravainen's redirection at 9:37 of the third period made it 2-1, and Williams added an empty-net goal with 21 seconds remaining. Derek Ryan also scored and Cam Ward stopped 25 shots to help Carolina to its second straight win since dropping six straight.

The Hurricanes temporarily pulled into a tie with Columbus for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot. The Blue Jackets were set to play Anaheim later Friday.

Hall's second-period goal extended his point streak to 24 games. He has scored in six of his last seven games, and 17 of his 29 goals have come since Jan. 1.

PANTHERS 4, SABRES 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Aleksander Barkov scored his 24th goal of the season, James Reimer made 24 saves in his first start in six games and surging Florida beat Buffalo.

The Panthers have won five straight and are 12-3-0 in their past 15. They began the night three points behind Columbus for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Colton Sceviour, Aaron Ekblad and Mike Matheson also scored for the Panthers, and Evgenii Dadanov had two assists.

Sam Reinhart scored for the Sabres, and Robin Lehner made 26 saves.

CANADIENS 6, ISLANDERS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Galchenyuk completed his hat trick shortly after Paul Byron and Noah Juulsen scored 1:43 apart in the third period, lifting Montreal over New York.

Galchenyuk scored his third goal into an empty net with 49 seconds left and also had an assist. Brendan Gallagher also scored for Montreal, which improved to 24-29-10 with its second straight win.

Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty left the game in the third period with a lower-body injury.

Montreal's Charlie Lindgren stopped 32 shots.
