No really useful info in this one, guys. I just thought it was kinda interesting. It's got me thinking about a trip to Nevada while they're coming down the stretch.

Gambling is the Vegas Golden Knights' secret weapon
Patrick Everson

?The betting activity on Golden Knights games is higher, as a percentage, than any team in any sport that I?ve ever seen." - Jason Simbal, VP of risk management, CG Technology.

On a 60-degree evening outside T-Mobile Arena, still a couple of hours before faceoff, thousands of hockey fans are already congregating for the NHL game between the visiting Edmonton Oilers and host Vegas Golden Knights.

Many fans are hanging out at The Park, an adjacent stretch of trendy restaurants, at which they fill up on food and beverage. And some fans also make a point of popping into one of the nearby sportsbooks to get a wager down before the puck drops.

Tim Ryan, sporting a Golden Knights jersey, is one such fan.

?Oh absolutely,? Ryan says, noting his modest $10 moneyline wager on the home team. ?A lot of these people here are putting money down. I think locals coming through the casino are throwing down 10 bucks. If they came from Edmonton, they?re putting money down on the Oilers, though that?s not the brightest thing to do.?

Ryan isn?t saying that just because he?s here from Calgary (a fierce Edmonton rival), nor because the Montreal Canadiens ? whom he?ll see visit the Knights two nights later ? are his first hockey love. He?s saying it because Vegas, a first-year expansion team, has the best home record in the NHL and is in first place in the Western Conference.

In fact, in true Sin City serendipity, Vegas is the best bet in hockey with a 39-16-2-2 record producing +21.34 units of profit for NHL bettors ($2,134 if you wagered $100 on Vegas in each of those games) and currently sits as the favorite to win the Stanley Cup at +500 after opening as big as +2,000 before the start of the 2017-18 season.

A few yards away from Ryan, hundreds of Oilers fans have pretty much taken over the indoor/outdoor Beerhaus for pregame festivities, and indeed, some are getting down on the visiting team tonight.

?It?s already gonna be exciting, but this is gonna make me cheer even louder,? Edmonton resident Taylor Chambers says of his bet on the Oilers. ?Every shot, every goal is gonna matter.?

As Ryan adds, ?It?s a great atmosphere.?

Exactly. Just two-thirds of the way through Vegas? inaugural season, T-Mobile Arena is the talk of the town ? and of the entire NHL ? for its incredible energy, from faceoff to final horn. And sports betting is part of the reason why.

---

Ken Boehlke was on to the Vegas Golden Knights well before they were the Vegas Golden Knights. In August 2015, more than nine months before the NHL approved this city for an expansion team, Boehlke founded the website/blog SinBin.Vegas, which would ultimately cover all things hockey in Vegas.

Despite growing up in Chicago with the Blackhawks, he was never much of a hockey fan until he launched SinBin. But he?s all in now, seeing firsthand the amped-up atmosphere at T-Mobile a couple dozen times already, while also traveling to several Knights road games, giving him the ability to compare venues.

Of his hometown Chicago, Boehlke says, ?The national anthem is on another level. Who else screams during the national anthem? It?s a battle between the crowd to belt it out and the vocalist to sing over them.?

He was at the Knights? season opener in Dallas. ?Not a bad atmosphere, but it wasn?t memorable, which really surprised me, because it was opening night for a Stars team that made some offseason moves. Not dead, but not memorable.?

Perennial Western Conference contender Anaheim?s home atmosphere was nothing to write home about, either, on Boehlke?s two visits. Nor was a Super Bowl Sunday clash between the Knights and Capitals in Washington, D.C.

?It was a library,? he says.

The only arena atmosphere that came close to measuring up was Los Angeles? Staples Center, where Boehlke visited for the December 28 Knights-Kings contest, in which Vegas notched a 3-2 overtime victory.

?That was the exact opposite. It was electric, the closest thing I?ve been to compared with T-Mobile Arena,? Boehlke says. ?But even that, it just wasn?t the same. I haven?t experienced anything close to the atmosphere at T-Mobile for the Golden Knights.?

So from someone familiar with T-Mobile and many other NHL venues, does the ability to legally wager help drive that atmosphere?

?I think it absolutely has some sort of effect,? Boehlke says. ?I know plenty of fans who go to the games and bet on the games. I know two people, season-ticket holders, their tickets are $38 apiece (per game). And they bet to try to win that back each game.?

That?s certainly paid off when betting on the Knights, who are a league-leading 22-5-1-1 in their home building. However, Las Vegas native and Knights season-ticket holder Vince Rampa takes a different approach to his wagering, going for the win-win situation.

?The price on Vegas at home has been super high sometimes,? Rampa says, noting the Knights? moneyline odds can approach or even exceed -200 (wagered $200 to win $100) with that home-ice success earning hockey bettors +12.14 units (or $1,214 if you wagered $100 on each of those home stands) heading into the weekend. ?So I?ve got kind of like a running gag, a superstition. I have this thing where I bet on the road team. If the Knights win, that?s great, and if the road team wins, I pick up a nice chunk of change on a big dog. If the Knights lose, they paid for my evening out, beers and all, because of my bet on the road dog.?

Like Boehlke, Rampa has seen NHL games in several venues. Before Las Vegas got its team, he?d always been a Flyers fan, so he?s attended games in Philadelphia, and he travels to Flyers road games against Arizona, Anaheim and Los Angeles.

"The other arenas, I?m not saying they?re morgues, but it?s noticeably different," he says. ?Here, you?ve got the crowd, the entertainment, the betting element. That?s definitely got something to do with it. The crowd is more into it. Obviously, if you?ve got some juice on the game, you?re more into the game all the way, you?re forced to pay attention the whole way. When I?m at games in different states and I can?t load my mobile app to bet, it?s disheartening.?

Covers reached out via phone call and email to the Golden Knights for comment on the influence gambling has on their home atmosphere - and possible home-ice success - but has yet to receive an answer from the team at the time of publication.

---

Boehlke, Rampa, Ryan and Chambers represent only a few examples, perhaps not enough to say that fans ? with wagers on Vegas and the road team alike ? really contribute to the roof-raising atmosphere at Golden Knights home games. But where the vulcanized rubber meets the road is in the statistics-don?t-lie business of Las Vegas sportsbooks.

Jason Simbal, vice president of CG Technology, says his company?s sportsbooks ? particularly at The Cosmopolitan a couple blocks from T-Mobile, but also away from the Strip in shops such as the M and Palms ? have seen the fans and their money firsthand.

?The betting activity on Golden Knights games is higher, as a percentage, than any team in any sport that I?ve ever seen,? Simbal says. ?Twenty-seven percent of every NHL bet we?ve taken this season has been on games involving the Golden Knights. No other team in any other sport comes close to that.?

In the NHL, no other team is drawing more than 8 percent of tickets at CG sportsbooks, including the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins (6 percent) and the perennial contender Blackhawks (7.6 percent). And the percentage of money on Knights games isn?t far behind the ticket percentage.

?It?s 25 percent of dollars wagered on the NHL, betting on the game ? moneyline, totals, puckline,? Simbal says. ?So, one of every four dollars bet is on Knights games.?

And Vegas is such a magnet for fans of road teams ? particularly on 65-degree mid-winter days, when it?s perhaps below zero in Chicago or New York or any number of Canadian cities ? that action on the opponent is a big driver for the books.

?At our tourist locations, mainly at The Cosmopolitan, the property is littered with those jerseys, and they?re betting on those teams,? Simbal says, specifically pointing to the January 7 Rangers-Knights game. ?I was at the book at 4 p.m. that day, a lot of Rangers fans making bets on the Rangers.?

Lest anyone think that leads to the Knights losing home-ice and home-betting advantage, Simbal quells such a theory.

?I know for a fact that at our local books, they?re betting the Knights, because we need the other team almost every game,? he says. ?Especially when we do proposition bets. It?s all local books and local accounts betting on the Knights players.?

---

With all those wagers coming in on both teams, it?s fair to assume many bettors ? locals and visitors ? ultimately make their way to the arena to help create a mind-blowing hockey climate. Simbal admits the Vegas franchise is bolstered by the perfect storm of first being a quality team, coming to town at the right time in an upward-trending economy, and also as a rallying point for the community, with its first season starting less than a week after the October 1 tragedy.

But no doubt, being the gambling capital of the world also contributes to the T-Mobile temperament.

?I would imagine when it?s your team, and you have your hard-earned money on that team, you might yell a little longer and a little louder,? Simbal says, noting he?s attended several Knights games. ?You?re seeing that with fans of teams for 20 years and with new fans of the Knights, putting a few bucks on them as part of a fun night out. What?s another 20 to 50 bucks to bet on the team you?re gonna root for? The fact that anybody who wants to bet on the game legally can is clearly adding to the atmosphere of the game and generally how popular the team has become.?

Jeffrey Price and Angel Sparks have hit four Knights games so far, traveling all the way from Lethbridge, Alberta, to do so. On this night, Price is in his Oilers jersey and girlfriend Sparks is donning the Knights gear, though both are fans of the Vegas franchise. Price hasn?t put down a bet yet, but having been in the middle of Vegas? historic first season, he agrees that fans with a little money on the line help add to the in-game aura.

?Oh absolutely. It?s like nothing I?ve ever experienced,? Price says. ?The energy is absolutely incredible. It?s Vegas. I?m sure there are tons of people throwing down money, because they want to get another part of the Vegas experience.?

Boehlke says betting surely makes those away fans a bit more boisterous, so Vegas fans have to match or beat that enthusiasm level. It becomes something of a competition, settled not only by the final score, but by who gets to a cash a ticket after exiting the arena.

?Is there anything worse than sitting in the sportsbook, having $500 on a team, and the guy behind you is screaming for the other team? Not only do you want to win that bet, you want to shut that guy up,? Boehlke says, noting the same situation exists inside T-Mobile Arena, with Knights bettors very often getting the best of the guests. ?Not only are you gonna walk out of the arena glad, but you get to cash a ticket on their sadness.?

Chambers perhaps best summarizes that experience with his bottom-line comment.

?Any moment in the game can affect the outcome of income.?

Penguins looking powerful again

With the end of February looming large and hockey fans across the globe turning their thoughts to the playoff picture, which team would appear to be moving into top gear ahead of the crunch weeks of the NHL regular season?

Yes, once again it is the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion from Pittsburgh that is the hottest team on the North American ice. Five straight wins and an 8-1-1 record over the last ten games have seen the Penguins heap the pressure on the Capitals in the race to the title in the Metropolitan Division.

And perhaps the best news of all for Pens fans is that players who are not called Crosby, Malkin or Kessel have been strutting their stuff during the recent hot streak, silencing doubters who feared that roster depth could yet be a problem as the season moves into its final phase.

Bookies at Intertops.eu have also been impressed with the Penguins? recent form, but the current offer of 10/1 on the completion of a Stanley Cup hat-trick this year still looks mighty tempting.

To Win the Stanley Cup ? Intertops.eu

Tampa Bay Lightning 11/2

Nashville Predators 9/1
Pittsburgh Penguins 10/1

Thursday?s 6-pack

Six top prospects for the Arizona Diamondbacks:

1) Jon Duplantier, P? Rice alum has a 1.38 ERA in 24 Class A starts.

3) Pavin Smith, 1B? Virginia alum hit .318 in his first 51 minor league games.

5) Daulton Varsho, C? His dad played in big leagues; is named after Darren Daulton.

8) Taylor Clarke, P? Charleston alum already has thrown 315 minor league innings.

14) Jimmie Sherfy, P? Didn?t allow an earned run in 11 big league innings LY.

22) Kevin Cron, 1B? Older brother CJ just got traded to Tampa Bay.

Quote of the Day
?Oh, [surgery] is not an option for me right now. I feel very, very good about where I am. So that ship has sailed in my mind, which is also a bit of a relief. I?m not going to lie. It?s been a long journey to this point, and it?ll still be a long journey until hopefully we get what we need to get done in Indianapolis.

The rehab has been hard at times. The one thing I know in my heart is that I am getting better, and I?m feeling great. I?m extremely optimistic. It?s been fun to see myself improve, so really I couldn?t be more excited for this offseason and for our new coach ? everything that?s happening ? and where the direction of the team is going.?
Colts? QB Andrew Luck

Thursday?s quiz

Of the ten teams currently in the Big East, what is the only team yet to win a game in the last four Big East tournaments?

Wednesday?s quiz

In the 70?s, Chicago White Sox had an artificial turf infield and a grass outfield at Comiskey Park.

Tuesday?s quiz

There are five major league teams in California: A?s, Giants, Angels, Dodgers, Padres.

***********************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) Seton Hall @ Providence? Pirates led 56-47 with 13:03 left when condensation on the court forced officials to suspend this game until Thursday afternoon. It was very warm Wednesday in New England, and the hockey ice under the basketball floor caused the problems.

12) San Antonio Spurs are paying Kawhi Leonard $18,868,625 this season, which puts him over the $60M mark in career earnings, all from the Spurs, but Leonard has played in only nine games this season, because of a right quad tendinopathy injury.

Spurs? doctors have cleared him to return to play, but Leonard has decided he isn?t ready to play yet. Leonard will be a free agent after next season; wonder how much he?ll play next season?

11) North Carolina 78, Syracuse 74? UNC wins its sixth game in row, shooting 8-22 in Carrier Dome, a tough place to shoot. Tar Heels are shooting 37.2% behind the arc this season, their best mark in five years. Three Syracuse players went the whole 40:00.

10) Duke 82, Louisville 56? What will Louisville do this spring? Will they keep interim coach David Padgett, or will they try and attract a big-name coach to carry on the school?s tradition, which could be difficult, seeing as probation is likely in the program?s future.

9) Stephen F Austin 97, Central Arkansas 62? Lumberjacks are 23-5, 12-3 in Southland, but how good are they? They lost by 5 at Mississippi State, lost by 1 at Missouri, won by 1 at LSU, so they?re good enough to hang middle-rung SEC teams, so they?re probably good enough to compete with a big-name school next month. SFA forces turnovers on 26.9% of its opponents? possessions, tops in America, so you better have experienced guards against them.

8) Auburn 90, Alabama 71? Tigers avenged an earlier loss in Tuscaloosa; Auburn is down to seven rotation guys, thanks to injury/eligibility issues- none of those seven guys are seniors. Both teams took the exact same number of 3-point shots as 2-point shots.

7) There was a 3-way trade in baseball Tuesday; it went this way:
Tampa Bay got P Anthony Banda and three other minor leaguers
Arizona got OF Steven Souza Jr
Bronx Bombers got 3B/2B Brandon Drury

6) Upsets of the Night:
George Mason (+8) 79, St Joe?s 76
Bradley (+6) 82, Missouri State 78
Cal-Riverside (+4) 69, Cal-Fullerton 65
Oklahoma State (+3) 79, Texas Tech 71
Michigan (+3) 72, Penn State 63

5) Grand Canyon University in Phoenix is the only Division I basketball program that is attached to a for-profit university. This is the first year the Antelopes are eligible for the NCAA?s; they?re 17-10 right now, 6-5 in the WAC, in 4th place in the 8-team league.

From espn.com: ?More than 19,000 students attend the GCU campus, and another 70,000 students pursue degrees online, which creates a fruitful revenue stream ? the school generated $218 million in the second quarter of 2017 alone, $4 million more than professional wrestling giant WWE?s earnings in the same period ? for a school that earns 79 percent of its revenue from federal student financial aid, per azcentral.com?

4) NBA fined Mark Cuban $600,000 for talking about his Mavericks tanking games, which he probably did to distract attention from the Sports Illustrated story that talked about a couple of bad guys who worked for the Mavericks on the business side of things.

3) Eagles? WR Alshon Jeffery played the whole NFL season with a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder. Jeffery caught 57 passes for 789 yards and nine TD?s this past season, and helped the Eagles win their first Super Bowl title.

2) Oklahoma State 79, Texas Tech 71? Kansas is back in first place in Big X; they visit Lubbock Saturday, for a first-place showdown with the Red Raiders.

1) Fairfield 70, Siena 69? Three of Saints? last four games were decided by one point or in OT; they?re 8-22, 4-13 in MAAC, turning ball over 22.1% of time with the 8th-least experienced team in the country.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Six top prospects for the Atlanta Braves:

1) Ronald Acuna, OF? Hit .344 in 221 AB?s in AAA last season

2) Luiz Gohara, P? Was 1-3, 4.91 in five major league starts LY.

3) Mike Soroka, P? Was 11-8, 2.75 in 26 starts in Southern League LY.

5) Ian Anderson, P? Turns 20 in May; went to HS here in the Albany area.

6) Austin Riley, 3B? HS kid from Mississippi hit .315 in AA ball LY.

9) Cristian Pache, OF? Hit .290 in first 176 pro games, but with no home runs.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) Drexel 85, Delaware 83? Dragons trailed this game 53-19 with 2:36 left in first half; this is the biggest comeback ever in D-I college basketball, beating out a Duke-Tulane game from way back in 1950, when the Green Wave blew a 32-point lead.

12) Arizona 75, Oregon State 65 OT? Wildcats lost Allonzo Trier earlier in the day to a failed drug test, rallied late to win here, as Beavers scored only one basket in last 14:08 of game. Trier was suspended for 19 games last year for a similar offense. Bad beat if you had the Beavers, +5.

11) Memphis 91. Houston 85? Cougars? 5-game win streak ends; three of their six losses are to teams outside top 100. Memphis won its last three games after a 5-7 start in AAC play.

10) This was the 1970 Final Four:
UCLA (in between the Alcindor/Walton eras)
St Bonaventure (Bob Lanier at C, but he got hurt in regional final)
Jacksonville (Artis Gilmore at C)
New Mexico State (Sam Lacey at C)

Imagine those three schools making the Final Four today, all with centers who would have good pro careers? Times have changed a lot.

9) South Dakota State 76, South Dakota 72? Jackrabbits clinch regular season title in Summit League, which doesn?t mean all that much, since tournament is played at a neutral site. State outscored South Dakota 19-11 over the last 6:04 of this game.

8) Utah 84, UCLA 78? Utes played without Sedrick Barefield but won anyway; it is their fifth win in a row- their home game with USC Saturday is a big bubble-type game. UCLA won six of last eight games but lost four of their last five road games.

7) Seton Hall 89, Providence 77? Game that started Wednesday in the Dunkin? Donuts Center was finished Thursday afternoon, in the Friars? on-campus gym, because of condensation on the court in the big arena. Pirates went 24-35 on foul line in a big road win for them.

6) Upsets of the Day:
Green Bay (+10.5) 96, Oakland 90
Rice (+7.5) 79, Florida Atlantic 76 OT
Memphis (+7) 91, Houston 85

5) Florida International 69, North Texas 68? Nine of North Texas? 15 C-USA games have been decided by 4 or less points, or in OT. All 15 games were decided by 7 or less, or in OT.

4) Virginia will be the #1 seed in the ACC tournament for the third time in five years next month; in the 60 years before that, Virginia was #1 seed in the ACC tournament once.

3) Dick Vitale has season tickets to the Tampa Bay Rays, right near the 3rd base dugout, but he called on Rays? owner Stu Sternberg to sell the Rays this week.

?If you don?t want to own a team and give the fans a chance (to see competitive baseball), sell the team. There?ll be a buyer in a heartbeat.?

2) Oregon 75, Arizona State 68? ASU was 12-0 on Christmas, but now they?re 7-8 in Pac-12, in 8th place in a 12-team league.

1) One of the things I?ve learned in retirement is that weekday television is incredibly bad, but not in March. Spring training games start today, and that is?..tremendous.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Looming deadline sets up interesting weekend on the ice
Monty Andrews

Two teams planning for next year will face off in yet another Original Six tussle as the Detroit Red Wings head to Madison Square Garden for a date with the New York Rangers.

What Do We Pack?

You'll forgive Winnipeg Jets players for not being able to find their passports; after all, they haven't played a road game in more than four weeks. But that long stretch of home cooking officially comes to an end Friday night, as the Jets travel to St. Louis for an encounter with the Blues. Winnipeg posted a terrific 6-3-1 record on its season-high 10-game homestand, solidifying a top-three position in the Western Conference while remaining in the hunt for top spot in the Central Division. The Jets enter Friday at +500 to represent the West in this year's Stanley Cup final, and +200 to claim the division.

Plenty at Stake

Only four points separate the top three teams in the Atlantic Division as of Thursday night - and the teams in second and third place will duel Saturday night as the Boston Bruins visit the Toronto Maple Leafs in an Original Six showdown. Toronto went into Thursday with just two losses in its previous 10 games - but one of those defeats came courtesy of the Bruins, who skated to a 4-1 triumph back on Feb. 3. The Bruins sit just one point behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for top spot in the division as of Thursday, and have won two games in a row. This is a critical mini-stretch for the Maple Leafs, who visit Tampa on Monday.

Battle of the Rebuilds

Two teams planning for next year will face off in yet another Original Six tussle as the Detroit Red Wings head to Madison Square Garden for a date with the New York Rangers. Detroit has already started to sell off pieces - including goaltender Petr Mrazek, who was moved to the Philadelphia Flyers earlier this week. The Rangers have already announced their intentions, telling fans to prepare for a roster dismantling ahead of next week's trade deadline. The teams have split two meetings this season, with the Rangers earning a 2-1 overtime win Oct. 24 and the Red Wings pulling out a 3-2 shootout victory Dec. 29.

Player News

* Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman has said he won't deal any of the young players on his roster to gear up for a Stanley Cup run. Tampa Bay is already in good shape, entering Thursday as a +575 favorite on Bet365 to win the championship.

* The New York Islanders are close to signing forward Josh Bailey to a multi-year contract extension worth an average of $5 million per season. The 28-year-old is enjoying a career year with the Islanders, racking up 62 points through his first 57 games.

* The Nashville Predators are planning to add teen sensation Eeli Tolvanen for the stretch run. The 19-year-old Finn, taken 30th overall in last June's draft, leads all Olympic scorers with nine points but was eliminated by Canada in the quarterfinals.

Injury Updates

* Things have gone from bad to worse for the Montreal Canadiens, who will be without netminder Carey Price indefinitely with a concussion. Price has struggled for much of the season for the Canadiens, going 15-22-6 with a 2.98 goals-against average.

* That isn't the only injury news to come out of Montreal, as defenseman Shea Weber will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a tendon in his left foot. Weber appeared in just 26 games this season, registering 16 points.

* The Los Angeles Kings have received a major boost - and they didn't have to trade for it. Forward Jeff Carter is back at practice after missing four months with tendon damage in his ankle. The former 40-goal scorer has played just six games this season.

Stanley Cup Futures

* How are those Vegas Golden Knights futures odds doing? Still quite well, thank you very much; the expansion Knights remain the top pick to come out of the Western Conference, carrying +750 odds to win the Stanley Cup on Bet365.

* The Philadelphia Flyers remain a live underdog despite losing their top two netminders. The Flyers enter Thursday at +1,700 to end a Stanley Cup drought that has lasted more than four decades - good for sixth among Eastern Conference teams.

* The Islanders are still very much in the playoff mix in the East - and with an offense as prolific as theirs, they might just be worth a shot as a live longshot. The Isles have fallen all the way to +4,500 on Bet365 to win their first Cup championship in 35 years.

Over/Under Trends

* The under has been the preferred play over the last seven days, with 26 of 48 games going below the total. This has been especially true of games that go extra time, with seven of eight overtime contests playing to the under.

* Fans of the Columbus Blue Jackets have been cheated out of goals this season. The Blue Jackets are one of the top under plays in their own arena so far this season, going below the total 19 times in 30 games at Nationwide Arena.

Penguins rout Hurricanes 6-1 for 6th straight victory
February 23, 2018

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin each had two goals and an assist and the Pittsburgh Penguins routed the Carolina Hurricanes 6-1 on Friday night for their season-best sixth straight victory.

Jake Guentzel had a goal and two assists, Sidney Crosby scored a late goal and Olli Maatta also scored. The Penguins took control with three goals - two by Kessel - in a 7:39 span in the second period.

Matt Murray made 27 saves for Pittsburgh, which has won 11 of 13 to overtake Washington for the Metropolitan Division lead. Since the Penguins were shut out by Carolina on Jan. 4, they are 16-3-1.

They were just as busy off the ice, completing a mid-game trade in which they picked up center Derick Brassard from the Ottawa Senators. As part of the complicated three-team deal, they sent defenseman Ian Cole to Ottawa and forward Ryan Reaves to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Teuvo Teravainen scored for the Hurricanes.

JETS 4, BLUES 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Connor Hellebuyck made 34 saves for his sixth shutout of the season and Blake Wheeler and Kyle Connor each had a goal for Winnipeg.

Hellebuyck has three shutouts in six career games against St. Louis.

Nic Petan and Patrik Laine also scored to help the Jets win for the fourth time in five games.

Jake Allen made 19 saves for the Blues. They are 0-4-1 in their last five.

BLACKHAWKS 3, SHARKS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jean-Francois Berube made 42 saves in his first start for Chicago.

Defenseman Jan Rutta, activated from injured reserve Friday, and Nick Schmaltz scored, and Artem Anisimov added an empty-netter with 30.5 seconds left.

The Blackhawks won their second straight and third in four games following an eight-game losing streak that dropped them to last place in the Central Division.

Timo Meier scored for San Jose.

WILD 4, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Mikael Granlund and Eric Staal each scored twice and Devan Dubnyk made 22 saves in Minnesota's victory over New York.

The Wild completed a three-game sweep of New York-area teams after beating the Monday night and New Jersey on Thursday night. The Rangers lost for the sixth straight time in regulation. New York is 6-17-0 since beating Buffalo in the Winter Classic on Jan. 1.

Jesper Fast scored for New York.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 6, CANUCKS 3

LAS VEGAS (AP) - William Karlsson scored two goals and Reilly Smith had three assists to lead the Golden Knights to a victory over the Canucks.

Tomas Hyka, Jonathan Marchessault, Tomas Nosek and David Perron also scored for the Golden Knights.

Vegas, which has won five of its past six games, improved to 16-2-1 against Pacific Division teams.

Vegas' Marc-Andre Fleury, who is four wins shy of becoming the 13th goalie in NHL history to register 400 career wins, stopped 30 shots.

Vancouver, which dropped to 3-7-1 in February, is 5-11-1 against intradivision foes.

Saturday?s 6-pack

Six top prospects for the Baltimore Orioles:

1) Austin Hays, OF? Jumped from A ball to the majors last season.

3) Chance Sisco, C? Lefty batter hit .267 in AAA last year.

4) Hunter Harvey, P? Father Bryan was a closer who had 177 MLB saves.

6) Tanner Scott, P? Allowed 45 hits in 69 IP in Eastern League LY.

9) Cedric Mullens, OF? 5-8 centerfielder who played in college for Campbell Camels.

16) DJ Stewart, OF? Was ACC Player of the Year at Florida State in 2014.

Quote of the Day
?You?d love to say, ?This is a really isolated situation,? but I think anyone that?s in this knows that it?s not. You could be probably be changing a lot of names and you could be changing on all different levels. You could be putting another name here, another name there.?
Former Indiana coach Tom Crean

Saturday?s quiz
What state is Quinnipiac University located in?

Friday?s quiz
Lansing is the capital of Michigan.

Thursday?s quiz
Of the ten teams currently in the Big East, Butler is the only team yet to win a game in the Big East tournament since the league re-configured.

***************

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) There is a high school QB in Alabama named Paul Tyson who has 18 college offers, but people are pretty much assuming that he will sign with the Crimson Tide.

Paul Tyson is Bear Bryant?s great-grandson. Alabama royalty.

12) I heard a schoolteacher say this on TV Thursday night:

?Red pens are traumatizing. I make corrections with purple ink.?

I?m hoping she was kidding; if kids aren?t spunky enough to get over having their work criticized with red ink, what chance will they have in the real world? It is probably best that I don?t have any kids; they?d be traumatized every 10 minutes.

Good grief, part of growing up is developing some thick skin to get through life?s ups and downs. Red ink from a high school teacher shouldn?t be much of an obstacle.

11) A Canadian women?s hockey player took off her silver medal as soon as it was placed around her neck this week; she wanted to win the gold medal, just like everyone else, but she couldn?t stand to have that reminder of her team?s losing around her neck.

That reminded me of something I read a long time ago; Hugh Durham was a basketball coach at both Florida State and Georgia; he made the Final Four at both stops, but his team finished 2nd in a Christmas tournament one year, and when someone handed him the 2nd-place trophy in the locker room, he fired it against the wall and smashed it to bits.

I was probably 10 years old when I read that; remember thinking, ?Wow, that guy is serious.? I understand it better now, but it was eye-opening back then.

10) Kentucky Fried Chicken had to close 800 of its 900 stores in the UK/Ireland for a few days last week, and for a very good reason.

They ran out of chicken. Seriously, they did.

KFC changed its delivery company, and the new company fowled up (ha!!!) its delivery schedule big-time, leaving most of the stores without chicken, which is a problem.

9) Interesting article on SI.com about how Tom Crean spent the first few months after being fired by Indiana last spring. He has gone around and visited teams in all sports, and learned from them, on different/better ways to do things.

Crean visited the Patriots, the Chargers, with Tony LaRussa and with his ESPN broadcasting duties, a lot of college basketball teams. The theme of all this is that you should never stop learning, and can always get better at your job.

8) 76-year old Jerry Glanville, who coached the Atlanta Falcons from 1985-93, is the new defense coordinator of the CFL?s Hamilton TigerCats, who are coached by June Jones III. There is a chance that Johnny Manziel might be the TiCats? QB this season, which would put them in the running to be North America?s most interesting pro football team.

7) Purdue is a really good basketball team, but they?re 0-8-1 vs spread in their last nine games, same way that Gonzaga is 2-10 vs spread in its last twelve games.

6) A?s/Mariners will open the 2019 season in Tokyo; my initial reaction to stuff like this is most always negative, but last time the A?s opened the season in Japan was 2012 and they went on to have a fantastic second half of the season and made the playoffs, so we?ll see.

5) Corey Dickerson hit .282 with 27 HR?s for Tampa Bay LY, so of course they traded him to the Pirates Thursday, for Daniel Hudson and a minor leaguer.

4) There is an agent named Jimmy Sexton who represents 11 of the 14 head football coaches in the SEC. Pretty influential guy.

3) Right now, the SEC basketball race has a 6-way tie for 3rd place at 8-7, with Kentucky one of those teams. I?m guessing the selection committee is going to have a headache sorting out all these teams with similar resumes.

2) Charles (Peanut) Tillman, an NFL cornerback for 13 years with Chicago/Carolina, is making good use of his post-NFL time. He is now an FBI agent, becoming one at age 37, the latest you can become an FBI agent. Good for him.

1? They broke ground in Las Vegas Friday on a new ballpark for the AAA Las Vegas 51?s, up in the northwest part of town, in Summerlin; Mets are leaving town after this season- they haven?t said who the new team will be.

It also snowed in Las Vegas Friday; not sure if there is a connection there or not.
