Did you by any chance know the Murray's when you lived on Lake Michigan. They had about nine kids, the dad was a big commodity trader in the grains. I think they lived nearby.

There was a Murray family that somewhat fits that description from Chicago that had a summer/vacation home in Grand Beach, Michigan, about 5 miles from where I lived just across the Indiana border. Not sure if it's the same one, but the sons were the biggest assholes around.

About 5 years ago, one of the sons got drunk and ran onto the field at wrigley. Got his picture in the Trib.

..................................................

In the past 30 years, homicides have nearly tripled, robberies and forcible rapes each are up over 500%, and aggravated assaults have increased more than 600%. According to the most recent National Crime Victimization Survey, nearly 37 million people have been injured by criminals in this country in the past 20 years. It is estimated that crime has cost America $19 billion since 1991.

Big City Statistics ;)

How much violent crime is there in the United States?

*In 1992, there were 6.6 million violent victimizations, including 141,000
rapes, 1.2 million robberies, and 5.3 million assaults.

*4.9 million households, or 5% of all households, had a member victimized
by violence during 1992.

*Americans have a greater chance of being a violent crime victim than of
being injured in a motor vehicle accident.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

While not much of that going on here I'd prefer to be prepared if situation occurred--and have the felon be the statistic and not myself :)

Ironically I would say women should be more concerned about having guns than men as there chances of being victim of violent crime is far greater.

That's the same family. You're right the sons were top notch assholes. I was fortunate enough to date one of the sisters for a short time, she was an absolute sweetheart.

Wow. Small world!

I hardly knew the girls because they spent less time in Michigan than the brothers and when they were there, they didn't really go out. I wish it was the other way around. Those sons were universally despised, but that didn't stop them from showing up at every party all summer, every summer. At least half the time, one of them got into a fight with someone or other.

And what percentage of those were cases where the victims didn't know the attackers? Very few...most violence falls under the former. Random violence is not as prevalent as the picture you paint. Statistics can be manipulated both ways. Find me statistics like those for areas with households with a median income of 60g and up. It will paint a very different picture.

I would agree -Saint -however couldn't find any stats using those parameters--would say most of these occur in inner cities with #'s being even higher as many not reported.

Gun ownership is personal choice--I personally don't want to leave anything to chance--If the situation occurs when one is confronted with harm to him and/or family--doubt if there has yet been stuation where victim said-- Boy i'm thankful I don't have a gun--do you?

In addition--if your neighbor-friend or stranger is in same situation--and assailant is armed just how does one assist when minutes matter---a 911 call won't cut it.

memphis
guys, memphis is notorious for front door break ins. i exercise on a regular basis, but i would be no match for a couple of intruders...... i have 2 small girls and a little boy - no help here. at least the oldest could dial 911.

i will always own firearms and they are strategically hidden in the home from the children. they in places that i would know if they were close to them. one is so high up i need a chair to reach it....

we recently had a gun carrying citizen stop an idiot from stabbing a man to death in the parking lot of a grocery store, this happened at a schnuk's in memphis. my wife works for another schnuk's within 10 min of the one that had the stabber. if it were your wife or husband who was being stabbed in the parking - you would be so thankful that another responsible human helped out - no one gets to see this broadcasted on the national level......cause guns are bad, um k

Did anyone watch Law and Order last night. It was an episode about home invasion. Four thugs cased nice homes, broke in, tortured and killed everyone, even the little kids. Not one home had a gun in it............I wonder what would of happened if the husband and wife had hidden a few guns around the house? Oh I almost forgot, the intruders used knives, no guns. I guess they didn't want to make any noise...........
