Ted Williams? highest strikeout total in a season was 64 in 1939, his rookie year. In five different seasons, he had at least 100 more walks than strikeouts. #bestofalltim

With the Yankees eight games behind Cleveland on the last day of the season, Casey Stengel fields a lineup of familiar faces in unfamiliar places. In an 8-6 loss to Philadelphia at the ballpark in the Bronx, Yogi Berra plays his only career game at third base, handling two chances without a miscue, shortstop Mickey Mantle flawlessly fields eight grounders, and Bill Skowron makes just one error in his eight opportunities at his new position at second base.

In the Fall Classic opener, Sandy Koufax fans his 15th batter of the game when he strikes out pinch-hitter Harry Bright for the final out of LA's 5-2 victory over the Yankees. The Dodger lefty, who struck out the first five Bronx Bombers he faced in the game, surpasses Brooklyn's Carl Erskine's 1953 World Series mark of 14, also accomplished against New York.

At 4 hours, 15 minutes, the first game of the ALDS between Yankees and Twins was the second-longest nine-inning postseason game in Yankees history, behind Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS in Boston (4:20).

The Dodgers had 8 RBIs by players who fell behind in the count 0-2, the most by any team in a game all season. Seven of those runs came in the sixth. David Freese: "We just fight. You get here by fighting. You get here by being confident. Just passing the baton and moving the chain. We just had an inning where we just showed up and got it done."

7 2-out runs in 6th lift LA past Nats 10-4 for 2-1 NLDS lead

For the second consecutive day, the Orioles win a World Series game, 1-0, in a contest decided by a home run when Frank Robinson takes a Don Drysdale pitch deep over the left field fence in the fourth inning. With the lone run scored on a homer, for only the fifth time in the history of the Fall Classic, and the complete-game shutout thrown by Dave McNally, Baltimore completes a four-game sweep over the Dodgers.

10/14/1978 In the sixth inning of Game 4, Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda argues unsuccessfully that the umpires should call interference on Reggie Jackson when a throw from Dodger shortstop Bill Russell caroms off his hip near first base, allowing Thurman Munson to score from second. New York eventually overcomes a three-run deficit with a 4-3 walk-off victory in ten innings at the Bronx ballpark, tying the World Series at two games apiece.

Stephen Strasburg's postseason ERA of 1.10 trails only Sandy Koufax (0.95) among those with a minimum of five starts. He has accumulated 57 strikeouts and 5 walks in 41 innings

If not for Michael Taylor misplaying a line drive hit directly at him and Juan Soto slipping while attempting to throw home, the Cardinals would have zero runs through 25 innings this series. Stephen Strasburg worked out of trouble with back-to-back strikeouts in the seventh. He has 12, with 0 walks, and 117 pitches. Another gem

The weather forecast in the New York City area calls for heavy rain starting later this afternoon and into the evening. We are awaiting a determination by the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball as to whether Game 4 of the ALCS will be postponed until tomorrow, which is looking very likely. If Game 4 is played tomorrow, Game 5 will then be played on Friday, which was the scheduled travel day to Houston, if necessary

Nationals starter Max Scherzer: "It just seems like everybody wants younger and younger players and everybody wants to forget about all the old guys. We see it in free agency. We're not dumb. The fact that we're the oldest team and we went out and won the National League pennant just shows you that old guys, we bring a lot of value to clubhouses.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Game 4 of the AL Championship Series scheduled for Wednesday night has been postponed because of rain in the forecast.

The Houston Astros and New York Yankees will play Game 4 on Thursday night instead, with Game 5 on Friday at Yankee Stadium and Game 6 in Houston on Saturday if necessary. Houston beat New York 4-1 in the Bronx on Tuesday night to take a 2-1 series lead.

It's expected that Houston will start Zack Greinke against the Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka in a rematch of Game 1. Tanaka pitched six sterling innings as New York won the opener 7-0.

In the bottom of the 12th inning of Game Six at Fenway Park, Red Sox backstop Carlton Fisk hits one of the most dramatic home runs in major league history, forcing a seventh game with the Reds. In 2002 this event, seen by a record-75.9 million viewers, will be chosen as one of baseball's most memorable moments.

The evening is over for Justin Verlander. After allowing two first-inning runs, he settled down keep the Nats at bay until the seventh, when Kurt Sukuki cranked a homer off of the signage above the Crawford Boxes. Verlander won't be able to earn the win even if Houston rallies, so he will be 0 for 6 when it comes to winning a World Series start.

In the most improbable of rallies, the Nationals take an 8-2 lead with six runs off Justin Verlander and Ryan Pressly in the seventh. Kurt Suzuki had the go-ahead home run, A.J. Hinch's first intentional walk of the season backfired, and the Nationals' other run-scoring hits were 83.5 mph, 75.7 mph and 62.1 mph. Sometimes you don't have to hit the ball hard.
