round 1

While the fight between John Ruiz and James Toney may or may not provide excitement, the verbal one between Toney and "Stoney" (Ruiz's trainer/manager) has and likely will continue to upstage the upcoming WBA Heavyweight title bout. Round 1 between Toney and Norman Stone began today at a press conference to announce the April 30th bout at Madison Square Garden in New York City. After speaking at the podium Toney walked to his seat and continued to berate his opponent.

"I wish we could get it on right now. I'm sweating right now. I don't play boxing. I do this s**t for real," he said. Toney (68-4-2, 43 KO's) then looked at Stone and started cursing. Stone returned the verbal fire prompting Toney to rise to his feet to confront Stone. Security quickly intervened and the two men engaged in a cursing match. "You're a f***ing piece of s**t," said Stone. "Toney the Phoney," he continuously yelled.

Each fighters respective camps tried to restrain their men, with Ruiz remaining fairly mum on his trainer's antics. New York State Athletic Commission chair-man Ron Scott Stevens also intervened in an attempt to subdue "Stoney" but Stone was having nothing of the sort. "Talk to me like you talked to him (Toney)," Stone roared. "You got know b***s to talk to him!" This isn't the first time Stevens and Stone have bumped heads. Stone was ejected from Ruiz' corner during his November victory over Andrew Golota which also took place in the Garden. As a result he was also fined and suspended by Stevens for his inappropriate behavior in the corner and with referee Randy Neumann. Toney was so fumed that he stormed out of the presser before it was even complete. DKP's Alan Hopper asked Toney to return to the podium only to be treated with a vulgarity in return.

After Toney left and the ruckus calmed down, Stevens took the podium to deliver an ultimatum. He said he wanted both fighters and their camps to show sportsmanship not only on the night of the fight but at weigh-ins, press conferences, etc. "New York is not going to tolerate any nonsense," said Stevens. And just as he was about to finish speaking, Toney stormed back into the room, onto the stage and to the podium to apologize for his actions! He sat back down and Ruiz (41-5-1, 28 KO's) came to the podium. "I hope he's there April 30th. I hope he doesn't sneak out the back door." This got Toney riled up again. "I'm the best," declared Ruiz. "Yeah, the best of the worst," responded Toney. "Watch him start hugging when I hit him - 'Please don't knock me out'." Toney also boasted that he had more money than Ruiz. Ruiz said Toney talked too much. "I talk in my sleep," said Toney.

Besides the last 10 minutes, the press conference played out like usual. The Ruiz-Toney fight, according to HBO's Kery Davis, is the beginning of a series of significant fights in the heavyweight division. Andrew Golota will take on Lamon Brewster in May and Vitali Klitschko will likely face Hasim Rahman shortly afterwards.

Ruiz, who has an unattractive style in the ring, has recently won a string of fights against quality opponents. "Say what you want about John Ruiz's style," said Davis "but no one can deny that he's extremely, extremely effective."

Both Don King, Davis and Dan Goosen (Toney's promoter) all sounded positive that this fight could lead to a heavyweight championship tournament. "This is the first step in crowning one world heavyweight champion," stated Goosen. How that will exactly occur, since three of the four major heavyweight titlists are not even slated for unification bouts, is unknown at this point.

Stoney-Toney round 2!

Tempers flared today in New York at the final press conference for the John Ruiz-James Toney WBA Heavyweight title bout at MSG. At a previous press conference to announce the fight last month, Toney and "Stoney" (Norman Stone, Ruiz' long-time trainer) got into a verbal confrontation that almost escalated to a physical level. Their ongoing feud continued Wednesday afternoon when Toney said Ruiz "ain't a real Latino" and that the titilist is a "fake-a** Puerto Rican." Stone said Toney was being disrespectul and that he should "shut the f*** up." Toney reiterated by calling the Boston native a "redneck" and by telling Stone to "tell your mother I said hello." Stone then had to be withheld by security when the two men came perilously close to hitting one another. Toney rose from his seat and Stone said he wanted to fight the former three division champion in the street. "After Johnny knocks you out, I'm going to p**s on you," said Stone. Stone also said that Toney was a bum and along with fellow Dan Goossen-promoted Riddick Bowe, had been "pulled off the street." (More to come)

capt.la10404152318.toney_ruiz_la104.jpg

this was taken less than a week ago...doesn`t look the the toney we saw eat up holifield.....

maybe "eat up" was a bad turn of phrase...considering the photo...

toney`s beginning to look like a black version of "butterbean".....

time to get off the twinkies and back onto the andro,james....... "cedric the entertainer" has better abs than james....

c`mon james...this is a huge fight.....we need somebody to remove ruiz from his own...and boxing`s consciousness.......at least,to separate this abomination from the belt....

not saying that ruiz hasn`t had some success...just saying that how he wins is appalling to boxing purists....and brutal for fans....

and if ruiz clinches his way to another boring,ugly,semi-illegal win, maybe toney can mudwrestle stoney stone on ppv....i`d pay to see that...

because, toney has done so much talking,he`d better win....

an awful lot of mouth for a guy that may come into this fight looking like he spends more time at mcdonalds than in the gym.....

should be boring as hell..except for stoney......but,interesting...

btw...what`s the over/under?....-230...or -240.....

i`m talking toney`s weight....

one thing i`ll add....

box put something on ruiz inside the distance....and honestly,at first blush,i didn`t like the bet`s chances(box wouldn`t want me to be anything less than honest,i`m sure)...even though the odds are very nice...

.i don`t think ruiz can knock out toney....of course,if he`s in terrible shape anything can happen....

but,i was thinking about the achilles tendon thing....happened when james was well into his 30`s.....and i always suspected james was on the juice based on his muscularity vs holi.....the guy was never, ever muscular and cut in his whole career...not even as a middleweight...and the guy`s notorious for his hatred of staying in the gym...maybe in a rough and tumble fight...a physical fight in which guys will be throwing one another around...and it will surely get rough in there.....

maybe that tendon doesn`t hold up....james ain`t 25 anymore.....and that`s alot of weight on a 5`10" frame...

some food for thought...

that's the picture I was talking about. I don't know how to post them or I would have. I find it hard to believe with that condition that toney could wrestle and punch for 12 hard rounds.

That picture must be making the rounds, as the line is dropping on the Pillsbury dough boy. Not saying this is a surety he won't get the win, but he could be so winded, he may fizzle out.

Well, it's official; Toney-233lbs., Ruiz-241lbs.

Well, it's official; Toney-233lbs., Ruiz-241lbs.

It's Thursday; 2 more days to go. How much will their respective weights change? More specifically, how much will Toney's weight change? I think he kites to around 245. What if he really had to dehydrate to get DOWN to 233? I don't know if he had to, but if so, it's only natural for him to add on some more weight before Saturday. As I originally said, I think he comes in closer to 240 than to 220. Now I say he comes in closer to 250 than to 230.

fawk it

I just put 500 on Toney at -200

I should know better because whenever I go against Box like this
I usually lose.

Something is not right about Toney such a high favorite.

His weight was lower than expected.

King calls the shots and something crazy is going to happen.

Maybe a disqualification or stopped by a cut or some other weird situation.

Oh well its worth a shot.

Ruiz is promoted by King, Toney is promoted mostly by Goosen but King has some strings tied to him as well.
This card is co-promoted.

I know your wager is mostly based on the shady number combined with King's influence, but you have to remember that 2 years ago Toney weighed in at 190. Thats a 43 pound swing on a 5'10" frame of an almost 37 year old man in less than 2 years! And I just saw a picture of Toney when he weighed 190, he wasn't exactly slim and trim. He looked strong but he still had some fat around the belly. Remember that this guy started around 168.

For "the fix" to take affect, Toney has to go the full 12 rounds because Ruiz will not take a fall here...period. At 233 pounds and 36 years old, I seriously dought Toney will last 12 against a big strong true heavyweight that likes to lay on and wrestle with his opponents.

Toney will be exhausted by the 10th, if he makes it that long.

.........................................................

this is why this fight stinks.

the strings tied to him...

thats a good one. :mj07:

The other side of Toney being the big fav is Vegas playing with the idea that if they made Ruiz the fav everyone would go with him.

But putting Toney up there as fav gives them the plays with people that don't know too much about boxing. The people that say geezz Ruiz is going to whip Toneys ass lay their big money down and everyone is happy. But that don't tell us who will win the fight.

.............................................................

Toney can go 12 rounds with Ruiz no problem. Remember he has a head like a filled concrete wall and Ruiz is not strong enough to take Toney out.

And no way will Toney knock out Ruiz.

So that leaves us with a decision. This is where King shines best. One of the judges will probably be Kings Uncle.

Then bam Toney wins by decision. I go in now and put my money on Toney to win by a decision.

Anyone know when this fight goes off Sat ?

Is it on PPV or HBO.

I will have to order HBO to watch this one.

I just bet Toney by decision for 500 at +145 to win 725.

It just makes sense to me.

Come on Toney !

outwrestle Ruiz, keep your hard head covered and
I will meet you on Victory Lane Sunday morning.
me, you, and Don King will be laughing all the way to the bank. I bet we could even get a rematch.

scotty,my man....i honestly hope you are right.....

seriously...despite having a few wagers on ruiz...

i just think that that weight will hurt toney late...ruiz came from behind to outwork golota...and imo, golota should be ashamed of himself for letting that fight get away from him...

as much as i dislike ruiz..and that`s substantially.....and think that if lazy american refs actually did their jobs,he would have been d.q.`ed several times in his career,i have to say that the guy is a 100%`er....he gives everything he has everytime out....

albeit throwing himself on the canvas from questionnable low blows vs kirk johnson...... to roughing up old evander....... to holding hasim rahman closer than michael jackson held maccauley culkin.....btw..rahman had a horrible corner in that fight...i think it was overrated floyd mayweather sr giving him ridiculously bad advice throughout the entire fight.... the worst corner work i`ve ever seen in a fight.......

toney will have to work hard in there...because ruiz certainly will...he`ll do whatever it takes....he knows how to win...ugly...and almost illegally..but,not quite...

maybe toney`s condition won`t be a factor....maybe his talent will be enough.....

but,i seriously doubt it....

a slow...plodding....foul filled...clinch laden..on the ropes....mess.....

anyway,i`m certainly looking forward to seeing stoney stone again.....he`s worth the price of admission....

the whole ruiz camp is a boxing abomination.... :banghead: :mj12:

but,incredibly enough,they are winners.... :142crying :142squint

don`t forget any d.q. or draw wagers....woud be worth a 5 or 10 spot,imo...

i`d better stop...before somebody offers me some cheese to go with my "whine".....

i could b-tch about ruiz for hours on end...lol

i might even miss him when he`s gone......

nahhh... :nooo:

killer....toney`s the better fighter....without a doubt.......not even close,imo......

if both were 5`10" 200 lbs,in optimum shape, toney wipes the floor with ruiz....

if this was the muscular, buff 217 lb toney that destroyed inanimate object evander holifield...i`m there...

but 233 at weigh in?...probably 240 by fight time......on a middleweight frame.....never been that heavy....one easy fight post achilles tendon surgery?

i`ll be very curious to see what toney has by the 8th round...

let me add,you have no idea how it pains me to bet a few dollars on ruiz.....it hurts...

there`s a huge talent gap...no doubt...

i`m not stepping out here....i just need the action...lol

this should be a spectatcle, if toney wins to see a guy dominate the most accomplished heavyweight who has no business doing so, can you imagine the carnage norman stone would create if johnny's getting his butt kicked? it's worth watching just to find out. and if ruiz dominates he shut's toney's overhyped butt and his obnoxious fans up.

one scenario I wouldn't mind seeing is toney wins, pushing ruiz permenantly out of the title picture, and toney gets destroyed in his next bout against a heavyweight who knocks his head into the third row.

regardless of boring charges and general public apathy, I can't WAIT for this fight. three more hours!
