Preview: Yankees (26-20) at Rangers (27-18)

Date: May 27, 2009 8:05 PM EDT

The Texas Rangers entered 2009 looking to improve after another sub-.500 season. In sole possession of the best record in the AL this late in a season for the first time in nearly 26 years, they appear to be on their way to doing so.

They'll try to continue their hot play Wednesday night when they face the New York Yankees in the finale of a three-game series.

Last season, the Rangers (27-18) finished second in the AL West with a 79-83 record, 21 games out of first place. It was the eighth time in nine years Texas finished below .500.

The Rangers appeared to be headed down a similar path entering this month, holding a 10-12 mark May 1. Since then, they're a major league-best 17-6 - 9-1 at home - to move four games in front of Los Angeles.

Texas has sole possession of the league's best record 45 games or more into the season for the first time since July 3, 1983.

The Rangers accomplished that feat Tuesday with a 7-3 victory after the game was delayed 2 hours and 24 minutes. They bounced back from Monday's 11-1 defeat that was only the Rangers' fourth in the last 20 home meetings with the Yankees (26-20).

Texas will give rookie Derek Holland (1-1, 4.82 ERA) a second turn in the rotation in place of the injured Vicente Padilla.

Making his first career start Friday, Holland threw 5 2-3 scoreless innings before giving up a three-run homer to Lance Berkman in a 6-5, 10-inning win over Houston.

The left-hander went 1-1 with a 4.85 ERA in seven relief outings prior to being inserted into the rotation.

The Yankees, who missed a chance to tie Boston atop the AL East, try to rebound behind A.J. Burnett (2-2, 5.28). The right-hander will be looking to win for the first time since April 14.

Burnett has struggled recently since a strong start, going 0-2 with a 6.04 ERA in his last seven outings after winning his first two starts with a 2.70 ERA.

Burnett gave up a home run on his first pitch Friday against Philadelphia and matched his single-game career high by allowing two more. He surrendered five runs and eight hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of a 7-3 loss.

"It's a matter of executing every pitch," Burnett told the Yankees' official Web site about a flaw in his delivery. "We'll work on it in the bullpen and be consistent, and take care of it. The good thing is I know how to fix it. ... If I didn't know what was the problem, I'd be worried."

Burnett is 1-2 with a 4.72 ERA in six games - five starts - against Texas, and 1-1 with a 5.21 ERA in three starts at Rangers Ballpark.

New York could be without Melky Cabrera after he left Tuesday's game with a right shoulder injury. The outfielder, hitting .323, crashed into the wall in the first inning attempting to make a catch.

Brett Gardner replaced Cabrera and finished with three hits and three stolen bases.

Boston Red Sox (27-19) at Minnesota Twins (23-24), 8:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Boston - Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2, 10.32) Minnesota - Kevin Slowey (6-1, 4.23)

Kevin Slowey takes aim at win No. 7 this evening when the Minnesota Twins continue their four-game series against the Boston Red Sox at the Metrodome.

Slowey won his second straight decision on Friday against Milwaukee, as he allowed three runs (two earned) and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. He also struck out four without walking a batter and improved to 6-1 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 4.23.

Minnesota, though, has given Slowey plenty of offense in his nine starts, providing him with a major-league best 8.62 runs of support.

The 25-year-old right-hander defeated the Red Sox the only other time he faced them back in 2007, giving up four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Minnesota snapped a six-game losing streak to the Red Sox on Tuesday, as Nick Blackburn pitched seven strong innings and Justin Morneau drilled a three-run homer, lifting the Twins to a 5-2 win.

Blackburn (4-2) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks for the Twins, who evened this four-game series at one apiece and in the process won for the fifth time in their last six games overall.

"It was a very good game, and Blackburn was fantastic -- he gave us a great effort," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.

Jon Lester suffered the loss for Boston, which lost for only the third time in its last eight tries. Lester (3-5) yielded five runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks over six innings of work.

Jacoby Ellsbury finished 2-for-5 and scored both runs in the loss. Ellsbury in the process extended his hitting streak to 21 games, which is the longest hit streak for a Red Sox player since Kevin Youkilis hit in 23 consecutive games in 2007.

Hoping to get the Red Sox back on track tonight will be righty Daisuke Matsuzaka, who will be making his second start since coming off the disabled list with arm fatigue. Matsuzaka lost in his return to action on Friday against Johan Santana and the New York Mets, surrendering four runs and five hits in five innings to fall to 0-2 on the year to go along with a 10.32 ERA.

Matsuzaka, though, is 2-0 lifetime against the Twins with a 1.61 ERA in three starts.

Boston won four of its seven matchups with the Twins last season, but won the final three meetings of the season. That trend has carried into this season, as the Red Sox have lost just one of their four meetings with Minnesota.

Preview: Red Sox (27-19) at Twins (23-24)

With their offense rolling, the Minnesota Twins are getting tremendous production from the No. 3 hitter in their lineup.

At this point, the Boston Red Sox are simply hoping for any kind of contribution from their regular No. 3 hitter.

Justin Morneau looks to continue his power surge and lead the Twins to their sixth victory in seven games on Wednesday night when they continue their four-game series against the Red Sox and the struggling David Ortiz, who has recently been dropped in the batting order.

In Minnesota's 5-2 win over Boston (27-19) on Tuesday night, Morneau's 14th homer - a three-run shot - capped a five-run fifth inning for the Twins (23-24), who have won five of six after losing a season-high six in a row.

Morneau is batting .529 (9 for 17) with two home runs and 11 RBIs in his last five games and is tied with Philadelphia's Raul Ibanez for the third-most RBIs in the majors (44).

"That dude's got a lot of power," Tuesday's winning pitcher Nick Blackburn said of Morneau.

Morneau is batting .417 (25 for 60) with seven home runs and 25 RBIs in his last 16 home games and is 5 for 9 with a homer and a double lifetime versus scheduled starter Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2, 10.32 ERA).

While Morneau is helping Joe Mauer carry Minnesota's offense, Red Sox manager Terry Francona moved Ortiz to sixth in the order Tuesday - the first time the five-time All-Star was out of the No. 3 spot since May 13, 2005.

"Got to work my way up, right? I'm going to play and follow orders,' the slumping slugger said.

Ortiz went 1 for 3 with a double Tuesday and is 4 for 27 with a homer and three RBIs in seven games since sitting out Boston's series against Seattle May 15-17. He's batting .197 with one home run and 18 RBIs in 41 games.

Besides Ortiz, the Red Sox are also hoping Matsuzaka can get back on track.

Matsuzaka was instrumental to Boston's success last season by going 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA, but has struggled through three starts this year.

In his first start since coming off the disabled list because of right arm fatigue, Matsuzaka allowed four runs and five hits while throwing 80 pitches in five innings of a 5-3 loss to the New York Mets on Friday. The right-hander was placed on the DL on April 15, one day after he was tagged for five runs and five hits in one inning at Oakland.

While the Red Sox have lost all three of Matsuzaka's starts this season, they've won all three of his outings against the Twins. Matsuzaka is 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA in those games.

Minnesota counters with Kevin Slowey (6-1, 4.23), who is tied for third in the AL in victories, but has only recently looked like one of the top pitchers in the league.

Slowey, who is backed by a major league-best 8.62 runs of support, is 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in his last three starts after posting a 5.50 ERA in his first six.

On Saturday, the right-hander permitted three runs, eight hits and no walks with four strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings of an 11-3 win over Milwaukee. Slowey has the major's best strikeout-to-walk ratio with 39 strikeouts and four base on balls in 55 1-3 innings.

In his only career start against the Red Sox on Sept. 28, 2007, Slowey gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 5-2 loss at Fenway Park.

Washington Nationals (13-32) at New York Mets (25-20), 7:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Washington - Jordan Zimmermann (2-1, 5.71) New York - Johan Santana (6-2, 1.50)

New York Mets ace Johan Santana is starting to heat up and that spells doom for opposing lineups. Santana will take the mound tonight versus the NL East-rival Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game series at Citi Field.

Santana has won back-to-back starts and is 5-1 over his last six decisions. The left-hander is coming off a 5-3 win at Boston on Friday, when he held the Red Sox to three runs, two of which were earned, in seven innings of work. Santana also struck out eight batters and issued just one walk to improve to 6-2 with an NL-best 1.50 earned run average over nine starts.

The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner has fanned six or more batters in every start this season and will put his strong home record on the line tonight. In five starts at Citi Field, Santana is 3-1 with a minuscule 0.81 ERA. He will take on the Nationals for the second time this season after beating them on April 24 with six innings of one-run ball and 10 K's. Santana is 5-1 with a 2.36 earned run average in six career starts against Washington.

New York hopes that Santana can duplicate what starter Livan Hernandez did in Tuesday's 6-1 victory over the Nationals. Hernandez allowed one run on nine hits with six strikeouts in his first complete game of the season and the 46th of his career. The righty has thrown more innings (54 2/3) than any Mets pitcher other than Santana.

"I think this day is about Livan. He went out there and he took matters into his own hands. He went the distance, and I think that's the first complete game we got this year," said outfielder Gary Sheffield, who went 2-for-3 and belted a three-run homer for the second straight night.

Fernando Martinez, who was called up prior to the game, went 0-for-3 with an RBI in his major league debut for New York, which has won two straight, four of five and 15 of its last 22 games. The Mets have also won eight of the last 10 games at brand new Citi Field, and will also host the Florida Marlins for three games on the residency.

In injury news for the Mets, shortstop Jose Reyes (right calf) and outfielder Ryan Church (right hamstring) were placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. The ballclub was also without center fielder Carlos Beltran (right tibia), who is expected to miss at least one more game after an MRI Tuesday revealed an inflamed tibia.

Adam Dunn went 2-for-3 with a home run and recorded the 1,000th hit of his career with a single to left in the second inning. Josh Willingham and Cristian Guzman also had a pair of hits for the Nationals, who have lost 11 of their last 13 games and hold the worst record in the majors at 13-32.

Ryan Zimmerman, who had reached base safely in his previous 43 games, finished 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts against Hernandez to have his streak come to an end. Zimmerman's run is a single-season franchise record.

Nats starter Craig Stammen suffered the loss for giving up three runs and seven hits in five innings of work. Jason Bergmann allowed three runs in the sixth inning in relief.

"He did a decent job," Washington manager Manny Acta said of Stammen. "The thing today was, he was hurt by pitching behind in the count a couple of times. He gave up three runs in five innings and got his pitch count up. At least these kids are not going out there and embarrassing themselves."

Acta will hand the ball to rookie Jordan Zimmermann on Wednesday and he is 0-1 with four straight no-decisions over his last five trips to the mound. Zimmermann, who won his first two starts of his career, last took the hill on May 22 versus Baltimore, as he tossed seven frames and gave up just two runs in a 4-2 loss.

Zimmermann has yielded at least two runs in six of seven starts this season, including four outings in which he's given up at least five runs. The righty is 2-1 with a 5.71 ERA in seven starts this season and will face the Mets for the second time. In an 8-1 win at Citi Field on April 26, Zimmermann was reached for only one run on six hits through 5 1/3 innings.

New York won two of three games versus Washington at Citi Field in late April and has won 11 of the past 14 matchups in the series.

The New York Mets appear to finally be producing offensively when Johan Santana takes the mound. The ace probably wishes they would shore up the defense as well.

Santana looks to win a third consecutive start Wednesday night and help the Mets complete a three-game sweep of the hapless Washington Nationals.

The Mets (25-20) have provided Santana (6-2, 1.50 ERA) with 12 runs of support to help him win his last two starts. That's one more run than they managed in his first seven outings of the season, when he went 4-2 with a 0.78 ERA.

New York is among the worst defensive clubs in baseball with 35 errors, 12 of them coming in Santana's starts with seven in his last three.

"After a mistake or error, you try and bounce back and get the next guy," Santana said.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner overcame three errors Friday, allowing three runs - two earned - and seven hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of a 5-3 win at Boston.

"It's just another impressive performance for him," Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. "I do hope at some point we play a real, real crisp game behind him."

Lately, the Mets have been better defensively, winning three of their last four games without a miscue to match their longest streak of the season. They did it again Tuesday, and got a complete game from Livan Hernandez to beat Washington 6-1 after taking Monday's series opener 5-2.

The complete game was the club's first since Santana threw a three-hitter in a 2-0 win over Florida on Sept. 27.

New York has won 10 of the last 13 meetings with the Nationals (13-32), including five of six at home. However, the club hasn't swept them in a three-game series since April 15-17, 2008.

Since joining the Mets in a five-player trade from Minnesota prior to the start of the 2008 season, Santana has won all four of his starts against the Nationals with a 2.33 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 27 innings. He beat them again on April 24, yielding one run and six hits while fanning 10 in six innings of a 4-3 victory at Citi Field.

The Mets put All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes and outfielder Ryan Church on the disabled list Tuesday, and said All-Star center fielder Carlos Beltran would sit out until the weekend because of a bone bruise below his right knee.

To fill one of the spots, highly touted outfielder Fernando Martinez was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo. Martinez, 20, went 0 for 3 with a walk in his major league debut.

The Nationals own the worst record in baseball, are have managed only three wins in 17 games since a season-high three-game winning streak May 7-9.

They hope Jordan Zimmermann (2-1, 5.71) can give them another quality start.

The right-hander, who turned 23 Saturday, allowed two runs and six hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings, while the offense generated four hits in a 4-2, 12-inning loss to Baltimore on Friday.

"He threw the ball very well," Nationals manager Manny Acta told the team's official Web site. "He was very aggressive. His fastball has serious life. It showed because he basically manhandled all those lefties. He had a good tempo, good fastball, good slider for him."

Despite that solid performance, Zimmermann is 0-1 with a 6.98 ERA in his last five starts after starting the season by winning his first two with a 2.38 ERA.

One of his victories, though, came at New York on April 26, when he gave up one run and six hits in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-1 win.

San Diego Padres (23-23) at Arizona Diamondbacks (20-26), 9:40 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Jake Peavy (4-5, 3.48) Arizona - Billy Buckner (1-0, 6.35)

The 10-game winning streak is over, but the San Diego Padres are back in the mix and will try to win their fourth straight series tonight in the finale of a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

The Padres rallied from six runs down in the series opener on Monday to win their 10th game in a row and another valiant effort came up short in last night's 6-5 loss in the desert. San Diego was down two runs in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out, and managed to plate one runner in its first loss since May 14 against the Chicago Cubs.

"Yeah, we got a game tomorrow, we've got a lot of games left in the season, it's one loss, we have to come out tomorrow and play like we've been playing," Padres manager Bud Black said after the longest winning streak since a franchise-record 14-game run from June 18-July 2, 1999.

Chris Burke homered and Brian Giles recorded three hits for the Padres, who have lost 12 of their last 13 road games. The Friars ended an 11-game road losing streak in Monday's come-from-behind victory. Starting pitcher Kevin Correia was saddled with the loss after he permitted six runs and nine hits with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

San Diego will visit Colorado for three games after its series in the Valley of the Sun. Its recent 10-game winning streak was fueled by consecutive sweeps at home over the Reds, Giants and Cubs.

Padres ace Jake Peavy must be glad he didn't accept that trade to the Chicago White Sox with the way his team has been playing lately and will toe the rubber Wednesday. The highly-coveted Peavy has won two straight starts after going winless in his previous five trips to the hill (0-4), and is coming off Friday's 4-0 win over the Cubs at Petco Park.

Peavy, a right-hander, pitched six shutout innings against the Cubs and gave up just a pair of hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks. He improved to 4-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 10 starts this season and started his current winning streak with a complete-game effort versus Cincinnati on May 17.

The 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner will take on the rival D-Backs for the second time this season after they beat him on May 6 at Petco Park. Peavy pitched seven innings of two-run ball in the 3-1 loss and fanned a season-best 12 batters. He is 11-12 with a 4.71 ERA in 27 career starts against Arizona.

Arizona won for the fifth time in seven tries with Tuesday's victory behind starter Max Scherzer's second career victory. Scherzer allowed just two runs on six hits in seven innings with 10 strikeouts and no walks, while Juan Gutierrez tossed 1 2/3 innings of relief for his first save of the season.

"For me looking at this game, I didn't have any walks," said Scherzer, who helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI and a run scored. "I think that was the biggest thing. I was attacking the zone and never gave in."

Mark Reynolds belted a two-run homer and Ryan Roberts added three hits and two runs scored for the D-Backs, who will host the Atlanta Braves for four games after this set.

Billy Buckner will make his second start of the season for Arizona tonight with hopes of duplicating his most recent performance. Buckner made his first start of the season last Friday in Oakland and posted the win by holding the A's to just a run and five hits in 7 1/3 innings.

Buckner is 1-0 with a 6.35 earned run average in four games (one start) this season and the right-handed South Carolina product will make his first appearance against San Diego this evening.

San Diego and Arizona split a two-game series at Petco Park on May 6-7 this season, but the Padres have won five of the last seven matchups between the teams.

Preview: Astros (18-26) at Reds (25-20)

Date: May 27, 2009 7:10 PM EDT

Over the past few seasons, the Cincinnati Reds had virtually no luck against the Houston Astros when they came to Great American Ball Park. That is no longer the case.

The surprising Reds look to win their fourth in a row and sweep a home series over the slumping Astros for the first time in five years Wednesday night in the finale of a three-game set.

In Tuesday's 6-4 win over Houston (18-26), Joey Votto's two-run homer in the seventh inning broke a 4-all tie, lifting the Reds (25-20) to their third straight win. Cincinnati, which had dropped six of its previous eight, has not won four consecutive games since Sept. 13-17.

Before a 3-0 win over the Astros on April 29, the Reds had lost 11 straight and 17 of 18 to Houston at Great American Ball Park. The Reds, who are 1 1/2 games behind NL Central leaders Milwaukee and St. Louis, have not swept a series over the Astros at home since a four-game set May 21-24, 2004.

"I look at every guy in the clubhouse and I feel like everyone is contributing," Votto told the Reds' official Web site. "It's probably the first team I've been on that really felt like that. It feels like everyone is working together."

Votto, who has missed nine games over the past three weeks because of dizziness caused by an inner-ear infection, has three home runs in his last two starts and five in his last 21 at_bats.

"(Tuesday's) really the first game I've felt pretty good," said Votto, who is second in the NL with a .364 average.

He's 1 for 9 with a homer lifetime versus Felipe Paulino (1-3, 6.90 ERA), who starts Wednesday for Houston.

Bronson Arroyo (6-3, 5.79) takes the ball for the Reds looking to win back-to-back starts for the first time since opening the season with three consecutive victories.

Arroyo gave up one run, five hits and two walks in eight innings of a 3-1 win over Cleveland on Friday, his first home victory since April 9. The right-hander had been tagged for 18 runs over 6 2-3 innings in losing his previous two starts at Great American Ball Park.

He beat Houston on April 20, allowing three runs and nine hits in seven innings of a 4-3 win. He's 0-2 with a 5.56 ERA in four starts against the Astros in Cincinnati.

The last-place Astros have lost a season-high six straight after winning seven of 10. This is their longest skid since losing eight in a row June 11-19.

"I think I'm doing everything I can - changing the lineup, moving people around, that's all you can do," Houston manager Cecil Cooper told the team's official Web site. "That's all you can do - you change the lineup, you try to motivate them every day. That's all you can do."

Paulino allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings of Friday's 6-5, 10-inning loss to Texas after yielding eight runs in four innings of a 12-1 loss at Colorado on May 12.

Paulino has been at his best this season against Cincinnati, but he doesn't have a victory to show for it. In two starts versus the Reds, Paulino has given up two runs and nine hits over 11 2-3 innings, but has been backed by one run of support.

A lack of offensive help has been an ongoing problem for Paulino this season. In five starts, he's received three total runs of support.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - Kenshin Kawakami (3-5, 4.73) San Francisco - Randy Johnson (3-4, 6.26)

The San Francisco Giants would love to see Randy Johnson pitch them to their first series sweep of the season and inch closer to a milestone in the process.

The towering lefty will try to move one step closer to 300 career wins tonight in San Francisco's finale of a three-game set with the Atlanta Braves at AT&T Park.

Johnson is 0-1 over two starts since getting career win No. 298 on May 11 versus Washington. He was tagged by the Mets for seven runs and 11 hits over four innings of a May 16 loss, but was much better against his former club last time out.

On Friday versus the Seattle Mariners, who Johnson earned 130 wins with from 1989-98, he yielded just a run on six hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision. He also struck out seven batters to give him 49 over 46 total innings this year.

The 45-year-old left-hander is 3-4 with a 6.26 earned run average this season and 5-5 with a 4.33 ERA in 12 career starts versus the Braves. He threw a perfect game versus Atlanta on May 18, 2004 as a member of Arizona.

Johnson, who has won five Cy Young Awards in his career, follows 2008 National League Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum, who threw eight shutout innings in leading the Giants to a 4-0 win yesterday.

"It's tough to catch up with him," Braves manager Bobby Cox said of Lincecum. "He's not going to give you but a couple [chances]. But we did hit some balls hard that were run down the first two innings and he's tough. He's got all the pitches in the world and they're good. He's hard to hit at."

Lincecum improved to 5-0 in his career versus Atlanta and put his club in position to sweep the Braves in three games for the first time since August 19-21, 2003. The Giants have won eight of their last 10 versus the Braves overall.

Aaron Rowand stroked a two-run double and Edgar Renteria added a two-run single, all in the second inning, as the Giants won back-to-back contests for the first time since a three-game winning streak from May 10-12.

The Braves failed to score a run despite getting Chipper Jones back into the starting lineup for the first time since Thursday, when he suffered an injury to the big toe on his right foot. Jones, who did pinch-hit on Sunday and Monday, went 1-for-4 and struck out twice as the Braves continued to struggle after coming into San Francisco following a three-game sweep of Toronto.

Jones has had success against Johnson in his career, having gone 13-for-33 (.394) with six homers, eight RBI and 11 strikeouts.

Kris Medlen gave up four hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings for Atlanta. He has dropped both of his starts since joining the rotation from Triple-A.

Japanese import and 33-year-old righty Kenshin Kawakami will face the Giants for the first time tonight and is coming off his best start of the season last time out. Versus Toronto on Friday, Kawakami tossed a career-high eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts while outdueling Roy Halladay for a victory.

Kawakami improved to 3-5 with a 4.73 ERA, but has a 2.63 ERA over his last four starts.
