Randy Johnson is one of the most dominant left-handed pitchers in baseball history, but now in his 21st major league season, stringing together back-to-back solid starts is a challenge.

Again seeking his 299th career victory, Johnson looks help the San Francisco Giants sweep their first series of the season in Wednesday night's finale against the Atlanta Braves.

Johnson (3-4, 6.26 ERA) earned win No. 298 against Washington on May 11, but has been unable to move closer to becoming the 24th member of the 300-win club.

After being tagged for seven runs and a season-high 11 hits in four innings of a 9-6 loss to the New York Mets on May 16, the 45-year-old bounced back Saturday, giving up one run and six hits with seven strikeouts in 5 1-3 innings of a 2-1, 12-inning loss to Seattle.

While Johnson was solid against the Mariners, whom he was an ace for from 1989-98, consistency has been an issue. He's posted a 14.18 ERA in losing three of his starts, but is 3-1 with a 3.03 ERA in his other six.

"In order to win 300 games - if that should happen - you got to win and you have to win consistently," Johnson told the Giants' official Web site.

The five-time Cy Young Award winner hopes a start against a team he has dominated lately can get him back in the win column. Johnson is 2-0 with a 0.41 ERA in his last three starts versus the Braves - including a perfect game thrown on May 18, 2004 while with Arizona.

In his last start against Atlanta on May 24, 2008, Johnson gave up one run and five hits with 10 strikeouts in six innings but didn't get a decision in the Diamondbacks' 3-1 loss.

San Francisco (22-23) followed up an 8-2 win in the series opener with a 4-0 victory Tuesday.

Aaron Rowand hit a two-run double in the second inning and is 12 for 32 (.375) with two home runs, three doubles and five RBIs during a season-high seven-game hitting streak.

The Giants have not swept Atlanta since Aug. 19-21, 2003, and are trying to sweep their first series since taking three straight over Arizona from Sept. 8-10.

The Braves (23-22) were shut out for the fifth time this season and have managed just 11 hits in the series.

Reigning NL batting champion Chipper Jones returned to Atlanta's lineup for his first start since injuring his right big toe Thursday. He finished 1 for 4 with a double and is 13 for 33 (.394) with six home runs and 11 strikeouts lifetime against Johnson.

Atlanta's Kenshin Kawakami (3-5, 4.73) is set to make his first career start against the Giants.

After being pounded for eight runs in 4 2-3 innings of an 8-2 loss to Cincinnati on April 26, Kawakami has yielded seven runs in 24 innings over his last four starts. On Saturday, the right-handed Japanese rookie gave up three hits and struck out seven in eight innings of a 1-0 win over Toronto.

"He's still trying to adjust to the big league hitters," Braves catcher Brian McCann told the team's official Web site. "I think (Saturday) is going to be a momentum builder, because he's going to realize when he does attack early, good things happen."

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Gavin Floyd (3-4, 6.54) LA Angels - Jered Weaver (3-2, 2.52)

May has not been a particularly good month for the Chicago White Sox this season, but the team has certainly shown signs of a turnaround recently.

Chicago will be shooting for a three-game road sweep of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim when the two 2008 playoff participants square off again this evening at Angel Stadium.

The White Sox secured their third consecutive winning series with last night's 4-2 victory over the Angels, which followed up a 17-3 trouncing of Anaheim in Monday's opener. Chicago has now won six of its last eight contests following a five-game losing streak from May 13-18.

In Tuesday's triumph, the White Sox received a pair of home runs out of Jayson Nix and 6 2/3 strong innings on the mound from ex-Angel Bartolo Colon.

"Pitching and great defense -- when you put those together, you always give your team a chance to win," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. "We are back on track."

Colon (3-4) took a shutout into the seventh inning and yielded just one run on four hits before being lifted. Matt Thornton and Scott Linebrink finished up the win, with the latter picking up the save despite surrendering a solo homer to Torii Hunter in the ninth.

Bobby Abreu also homered for the Angels, who had won five out of their last seven games heading into this series. Starting pitcher Joe Saunders (6-3) absorbed the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Anaheim's Chone Figgins did extend his hitting streak to 14 games with a pair of hits on Monday. The speedy third baseman is batting .400 (24-for-60) during his run.

The Angels will try to avoid being swept in a three-game home series since Kansas City accomplished the feat from June 24-27, 2007. The club will have one of its top pitchers on the hill in tonight's finale in Jered Weaver, who seeks to end a frustrating three-start winless streak.

Weaver has allowed one run or less in three of his last four outings, yet hasn't managed to get a victory since a complete-game effort in a 6-1 decision over Toronto on May 7. The Angels have scored only six runs over his past three starts.

The right-hander last pitched against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday and held the Angels' area rivals to one run over five frames. He was then removed for a pinch-hitter with the game tied at 1-1.

Weaver hopes to get back in the win column against a Chicago squad he's dominated since reaching the majors in 2006. In four lifetime starts against the White Sox, the 26-year-old is 3-0 and allowed only one run and 14 hits over a combined 26 2/3 innings.

Angel Stadium has also been kind to Weaver this season, as he's 3-0 with an outstanding 1.23 earned run average in his five home starts.

Guillen will hand the ball to the inconsistent Gavin Floyd tonight. The talented right-hander finally put an end to a rough five-start stretch by firing eight shutout innings to down Pittsburgh on Friday. He permitted only two hits and struck out eight Pirates in an excellent performance.

Prior to that start, Floyd had gone 0-3 with an awful 9.94 ERA over his last five mound trips. He owns a substandard 6.54 ERA on the season, one year after amassing a career high 17 wins and a 3.84 ERA in a breakthrough 2008 campaign.

Floyd has made two career starts against the Angels, both of which came last season, and is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in those games. He has never previously pitched at Angel Stadium.

These teams split 10 meetings a year ago, as well as a four-game set at Angel Stadium from May 12-15, 2008.

Jered Weaver held the Chicago White Sox scoreless in two starts against them last season. The Los Angeles Angels could use another performance like that in his next outing.

Weaver and the Angels will try to avoid being swept in a three-game home series for the first time in nearly two years when they face the White Sox on Wednesday night.

Weaver (3-2, 2.52 ERA) is winless in his last three starts, but a matchup with Chicago (21-24) could be coming at the perfect time. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 0.34 ERA in four starts against the White Sox - all wins for the Angels (23-22). He pitched 15 scoreless innings against Chicago in 2008, allowing four hits in two Los Angeles victories.

Weaver has given up five runs over 20 innings in his last three starts, but the Angels have lost two of those games. He allowed one run and eight hits over five innings of a 3-1 loss to the Dodgers on Friday.

The Angels hope to avoid their second three-game skid this month after following Monday's 17-3 loss with a 4-2 defeat on Tuesday.

Bobby Abreu and Torii Hunter each homered, with the latter coming in the ninth inning to cut Chicago's lead to two. But after Juan Rivera's single put the tying run at the plate, Mike Napoli popped out to end the game.

The Angels haven't been swept in a three-game home series since Kansas City did it June 24-27, 2007.

Los Angeles' bullpen took a big hit Tuesday when Scot Shields was placed on the 15-day disabled list with patella tendinitis in his left knee. Shields, whose 42 wins as a reliever are the most in franchise history, has given up runs in eight of his 20 appearances, and has three losses and three blown saves.

"I think he was trying to battle through it, but he knew that something wasn't right,' said Joe Saunders, Tuesday's losing pitcher. "As a competitor, you try to fight through some stuff. ... Hopefully in this case, it's not too bad and he can come back in a couple of weeks or a month."

The White Sox, meanwhile, have won six of eight thanks to some vastly improved pitching. Excluding a 20-1 loss to Minnesota last Thursday, the starters are 6-1 with a 1.68 ERA during that stretch after going 0-5 with a 7.88 ERA in the previous eight games.

Bartolo Colon became the latest pitcher to turn in a solid performance Tuesday, snapping a personal three-game losing streak after allowing one run and four hits in 6 2-3 innings. Jayson Nix - appearing in his 15th game this season - homered twice, giving him four home runs over his two-year career.

"We pitched well, we played great defense and when you put those things together you're always going to give your team a chance to win," Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said.

Gavin Floyd (3-4, 6.54) takes the mound after snapping a five-game winless streak with his best start of the season. Floyd was 0-2 with a 12.00 ERA over his previous three starts before giving up two hits in eight innings of a 2-0 win over Pittsburgh on Friday.

Floyd has made two career starts against the Angels, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA.

White Sox left fielder Carlos Quentin was expected to be sent back to Chicago on Wednesday for tests after aggravating a left foot injury Monday. Quentin is hitting .193 with one homer and seven RBI in his last 26 games.
